Welcome to Humble Vale Mafia!

On Saturday, 25 September 2021 20:00 BST (click for countdown!), we will be having a 24-hour Day Zero! This will simply serve as an icebreaker party, with no roles assigned and freedom to roleplay or just to hang out and chill. Get to know your fellow players! Sign-ups will still be open for Day Zero. Day Zero may also be open one hour early, depending on life circumstances for your GM.

On Sunday, 26 September 2021 20:00 BST (click for countdown!), the 0th Night will begin. At that point, the thread will be locked and roles will be assigned. Buddys will be assigned. Sign-ups will also be closed. Are you prepared?

This list will not be updated or edited. The alignment flips of dead players will be included in the opening and ending posts for each Day, in order to avoid spoilers for future readers. Please use threadmarks to navigate to those posts.

The roles for this game are unknown. Expect some shenanigans. Any information contained within your role PMs will always be truthful. Alignment flips will also be truthful. If all alive players vote to end the day, the day will be closed and votes for the execution will be tallied early.

You are free to roleplay or not roleplay. Please remember that roleplay flavour is not alignment-indicative - cinnamon roll characters can be assigned scum roles, and bastard jerk characters can be entirely innocent. Respect your fellow players!

BUDDY SYSTEM INFORMATION

Humble Vale Mafia employs a Buddy system! But what is a Buddy system?

Throughout the entire game, all players will have at least one other player they may communicate privately with, at all times. You can strategise, theorise, roleplay, or simply just shitpost with your Buddy. You don’t even need to share your role info or alignment with your Buddy, if you don’t want to!

If you become an Orphaned Buddy (by means of your Buddy perishing, or an uneven number of players), don’t panic! Orphaned Buddys will be assigned to an existing Buddy system at random. The maximum number of people within a Buddy system is three (3). The minimum number is two (2).

Here are some simple guidelines for the Buddy system:

All Buddy system communications must be here on the forums, via Private Messaging. The GM (Bluwiikoon) will set up all Buddy Chats, and will monitor the communications. Not every player of this game is active on Discord, so I hope you will understand this guideline!
If the members of a Buddy system change at any point, a new Buddy Chat will be created. This is so that any New Buddys cannot view prior conversations you have had.
The Buddy Chats will be labelled with the names of members of the Buddy system (for example - Bluwiikoon, Dragonfree, Phantump Buddy Chat).
If your Buddy system has three members, you cannot communicate with each Buddy individually or privately. You must communicate with both Buddys at the same time, in the designated Buddy Chat. It’s rude to leave a Buddy out!
Any private communication outside of the specified Buddy Chats is illegal and will make me very sad :( also I will have to modkill participants of illegal communications. Please respect the game’s integrity!

I would also like to request that discussion on the Thousand Roads Discord’s #forumgames channel be limited to comments on roleplay flavour. If you would like to speculate or react as a non-player, please ask to join the Spectator Chat! We will have #blind-speculation and #informed-speculation channels (the latter being reserved for players who perish and spectators who don’t mind chatting with fallen players).

Any further Buddy system details players need to know will be included within your role PMs.

Before you know it, the sun has already sunk below the horizon. Lamps in the street illuminate the pathways. The warm light of the hotel/inn windows draw people in, and everyone is assigned a room and a phone. Seems like whoever you share a room with, you can text or call at any time, without any other person knowing. The legendary “Buddy system”.

The cottages in town don’t look particularly occupied, and some of them seem to accommodate larger guests. Seems like you have the option to stay inside a house instead of a hotel/inn room, as long as you still keep your Buddy with you. Seems like your Buddy will teleport to your accommodation, even if you try to get rid of them. Seems like some form of magic in this town is determined to keep you together with someone. Better hope you get along!

On the balcony of his own room, sans takes a long sip of hot sauce. A special drink for a special occasion.

“that day went pretty well,” he said to himself. “sure hope folks don’t try to shoot each other in the night or anything.”

The wind picks up, scattering loose flower petals. A stray crow caws in the distance, its call echoing through the night. sans finishes his drink, and puts it to one side.

“...welp. i’m going to grillby’s.”

The skeleton man walks offscreen, disappearing out of sight.

"Ey Tony, lemme tell you a story. See, we had some guys out near ██████, thought they'd set up shop in some small village. Quiet place, y'know? Perfect place for the boys to clean up some cash. Locals didn't bat an eye. So, y'know, one day the boys send some guys out to deliver the money to the higher ups, 'cause that was always the plan when the money was clean."

"Thing is... the boys couldn't leave. They'd drive in a straight line for miles, end up right back at the village. It weren't for lack of trying, too - and these weren't the type of guys to get lost, really reliable guys. So they turn to each other, and they says..."

"Something ain't right about this village."

"The guys, they had to come up with some sort of plan. They tried talking to the locals and got laughed at, so they decided to be a bit more firm with 'em. Start interrogating some folks. If they didn't talk, they'd get rid of 'em."

"Of course, word got around town that certain members of the community, ahem, our boys, were intending to cause harm to everybody else. Folks didn't like that, so suddenly the whole village was ready to execute anybody that seemed suspicious. Lucky for us, the locals couldn't tell who was one of theirs and who was one of our own."

"At this point, our boys were ready to cut down anyone if it meant they could get outta there. Shit just seemed way too weird, way too extreme. There ain't no way a truck can drive for a couple hours in a straight line and end up back where they started, not without some kinda supernatural force or crazy technology or something. Shit's scary. Our boys... they were real scared."

"But, y'know... they were even more scared, when... the very same people they shot at night were there the next day, like nothing had even happened."

It's a beautiful day outside. Birds are singing, flowers are blooming. The fresh scent of Season is in the air, and so is the fresh scent of the dozens of random candles within your room. On days like these... you wish you were able to sleep in a bit more, instead of being dragged out of bed and into the town square with everyone else.

In the midst of the town, sans is standing atop a textureless, perfectly geometrically cube-shaped cube, hands in his pockets. It is the most cube-shaped cube you have ever seen.

"hey, so, bad news," he starts, addressing the whole group. "seems like some omnipotent force granted people some powers last night. you might have heard gunshots in the night. or, you might have been enjoying our top-quality sleeping arrangements. i know i wouldn't blame ya."

He clears his... throat? "the thing is, our mayor implemented a certain... law. law says that if anybody is found shooting innocent folks, or even planning to shoot innocent folks, we execute 'em. might seem extreme, but hey. it's an old town."

"now, the good news: we don't just execute at random. you all get a say in who you think is the most suspicious. so if i were you... i'd start figuring out who's trying to kill the rest of you. otherwise... you're gonna have a bad time."

"anyway, i'm making burgers if anybody wants some. fries on me."

The clock had been frozen for some time. Time itself had been halted for what felt like an hour, but now... it reaches the end of its cycle at last, and chimes a haunting tune. Almost instantly, the sky washes over with the colours of night.

"looks like we finally have a majority vote," said sans, reading over the tally. "all that's left now is... the execution."

Nothing seems to happen for a while. You question whether anything will happen. But then, you see it - a hole opening up in the ground, golden light beaming up from the cracks. The Earth itself has heard your voice, your decision.

Before anything else occurs, sans makes sure to cover Gen's eyes, shielding the small human-turned-Oshawott. By the time Gen can see again, there is no trace of DawningWinds, aside from a lone paper fluttering in the air.

DawningWinds was executed. They were Town.

"welp," said sans, turning the paper over in his hands. "i gotta go. my brother's overdue for his bedtime story. i'd suggest you all get as much sleep as you can, too."

The skeleton walks into an alleyway, and out of sight. If you were to peer into the alleyway... all you would see is a dead end. No skeletons in sight.

As you wake on the third day, something feels... more gloomy. The birds aren't singing quite as much, nor the flowers blooming so readily. At times, a harsh wind makes its presence known, howling through the cracks and crevices of Humble Vale.

sans is in the town square as always, sighing when the whole group approaches. Except... it isn't quite the full group.

"seems you did pretty good yesterday," he said, nodding quietly. "'course, i was helping my brother write letters all day. he was really, really happy about the letters and gifts he received, so i'd like to say i'm grateful to those of you who sent him some. he's a good person."

He pauses, clearing his throat(?). "unfortunately... looks like we still have some bad eggs in the group. two people were found dead overnight."

sans places a large collage onto a nearby shop window - a collage of the faces of everybody staying here. DawningWinds and kyeugh were already crossed out, of course, but now... he crosses out another two individuals.

The sky is grey, and the air feels heavy and uncomfortable. It might not rain today, but it feels like it really should.

"The boys had their share of bad luck, y'know? It wasn't easy tryin' to convince the villagers they were part of the good guys. Sure, they managed to get an innocent guy executed, but then we lost a guy. All the while, it seemed like anyone they were shootin' turned up fine again the next day. That ain't easy to cope with, you know? When you riddle someone with bullets, you expect them to stay dead."

"But then... maybe their luck was turning around for the better. The boys finally managed to get rid of a couple townies. See, all they really needed to do, was to use more gun. They were still fighting to survive, but they thought, hey, maybe we can make it through this. Maybe we can escape this damned village."

The earth cracks and begins splitting apart once more, golden light shining on Kora from below. And again, sans makes sure that Gen doesn't see a thing. It isn't long before another lone paper is fluttering in the heavy air, with the Zoroark nowhere to be seen.

Fusion was executed. They were Mafia.

"...welp. that's two in a row," commented sans, visibly impressed. "keep it up, and you might actually get to enjoy your vacation."

Somehow, this isn't very reassuring. As you return to your hotel/inn room, you try not to think of the explosion when you sleep. You try to forget Amy's horrified expression. Rain starts to fall as the night falls, tapping at your windows like an old ghost.

It was back-and-forth chaos. As soon as the boys thought they had the upper hand, they lost even more of their own to the villagers. It was getting harder and harder to stay undercover, to stay safe. Not even a fucking bomb could get them out of that place, god knows they tried.

To say they were desperate, was an understatement. They were thinking, how are they meant to get outta this dump if half the town is secretly aliens? Bug-eyed, cow-abducting, little fucking green men? Absolutely crazy shit, I tell you.

The night had been quiet. Too quiet for his liking. The silence left him alone with his thoughts, and that was almost as torturous as being reminded of how things had… changed. He wasn’t actually alone, but the room had never felt so empty.

Without another word, Steven rose from the desk where he’d sat for the entire night. Stiffly, he walked past the bed that sat untouched, and opened the door into the inn’s hallway.

He padded down the hall until he reached the end. A small window overlooked the town square, and even though it was dark, he swore he could see the scorched mark from the explosion… Steven leaned heavily against the wall, his forehead resting on the cool glass. His mind was racing, his heart was doing no better.

Too lost in his own thoughts, Steven didn’t notice the movement of a reflection in the glass.

The first impact felt like nothing more than a punch between his shoulder blades. The second sent fire spreading through his chest. He only had time to let out a gasp before slumping against the wall and crumpling to the floor.

The rain has stopped when the guests at Humble Vale wake up for the day, but an uncomfortable fog has taken its place. The sky is grey and cloudy, and even if it isn't raining here, you get the feeling that it's probably raining somewhere else.

In the fog, you only see the silhouette of sans at first, as you carefully step towards the town square meeting spot.

"...i'm afraid there's more bad news," he says, as everyone approaches. Everyone except one.

So many faces got crossed off the collage yesterday, but now...

Panoramic_Vacuum has died. They were Town.

The world feels more shrouded, more distant today. It feels like the deep fog could be hiding anything in its midst. You only hope you can see far enough in front of you to make the right choice.

As you begin to discuss things, sans quietly walks off to the side, eyes dark.

The night fell, but nothing happened for a while. Seems like sans was taking a huge nap. A cataclysmic nap, even.

However, it also seems like the town came to a consensus!

The town had realised that HelloYellow17 was Mafia, especially since she confirmed it herself.

With the truth revealed, surely it would be time to execute the villain... but instead, something even better happened.

Everyone is here! The Mafia had lost, and now all the players were back in Humble Vale, ready to have a real vacation. Town has won! And, everyone gets free hot dogs!

Also everyone tried to blow up the alien for fun but it didn't count because aliens only go rage mode at dusk and not night. SAVED.

In the end, though... it was all for nothing. Every last one of our boys died out there. They put up a good fight, but the villagers and aliens were just too much for 'em. Poor bastards, am I right Tony?

Sure, all of our boys died, no doubt about that. No way they could have told anyone.

The thing is, Tony, aliens don't just let things go when something like this happens. See, seems like that little village and the little villagers, were important to them for some reason. So, ey, they like to send warnings.

They like to see the fear in someone's eyes, once they realise they fucked with the wrong people.
