19. How are wars fought in your world?

A great war broke out across the different Platebearers, known as the Rending War. It ended when one of the Platebearers was killed by a superweapon, causing it to fall to the earth. Conflicts echoing it occur in the game's story... and it's PVP.

21. What do people do for work in your world?

Both NPCs and Players can take on various jobs and odds and ends. These do various things - for most it is a way to make money, but for the Players it can lead to more valuable things or even advance plotlines. And ultimately the NPCs and other characters serving the Players is, in and of itself, a job.

22. What do people do for fun in your world?

For the Players, the entire world IS the fun. The NPCs and such meanwhile have games and activities - often rooted in the setting's history - that they occupy themselves with when not entertaining the Players. However entertaining said Players are widely considered to be pretty enjoyable as far as duties go.

This time I'm gonna cheat a bit, mostly because I haven't had the time nor the power to develop 20k new species. But hey, gonna promise *something*, right?

WBJ 2024 P4E1: Flora and Fauna

The Many Ways of Life

From kyeugh’s prompt:

What else are the people of your world sharing their planet with? Feel free to go into detail on any monster or creature in your world […] .

Even though Nrafhal is not influenced by humans in-universe, it doesn’t mean it is not influenced by our reality at a deeper level. After all, this world and its characters are stuff I, an IRL person I swear, just made up (sssssh, don’t let them know!) – it’s just I’d rather not spend the effort of creating a whole new ecology and some 30k species.

…Yet.

Thus, Nrafhal (in particular in -zmer) will have a good background variety of mushrooms, trees, worms, mollusks, bugs and whatever siphonophoræ are conveniently and nondescriptingly similar to but not exact as in IRL or as in the already existing Pokéverse (“time flower”, remember?).

Hey, fishermons in Notgos and Elergaba gotta earn their wages fishing something, after all.

These creatures will be there, implied most of the time, until the need comes to concoct a good Ekans-specific antivenom or when a superpowered elemental thunder dog has to deal with fleas or blood parasites.

After all, something has to have adapted to the existence of prevalent and regular phenomena such as the Shackle, Remlia’s magicks, or just the good ol’ elemental powers. Just imagine what a psychic predator could do in a world where psychic energy is plentiful…

23. What’s the sky like in your world?

The atmosphere itself is populated by many Platebearers, which harbor a good chunk of other life. The planet is obit by various crystalline spheres in place of moons, which rotate in erratic patterns. Far in the distance a sun shines, though eclipses by the spheres are not uncommon.

24. What places are still unexplored in your world?

The surface of the planet is a forbidden zone where few dare venture. The calamity that depowered Aulwyr and forced the inhabitants to flee to the Platebearers irreversibly warped it, and now it is a hostile landscape filled with hostile flora and fauna. However some dark beings, like the dark dragon Calabria, still make their lairs there.

25. What do people carry with them on a daily basis in your world?

Players have entire inventories to themselves they fill with exotic odds and ends. NPCs keep simpler things with them, usually only necessities for daily life... or their current quest. Both store their items in special "hammerspace" pouches.

26. What sorts of art exist in your world?

The NPCs have their own depictions of art and statuary around, a few with plot or historical importance. Players can express themselves with special messages and graffiti they send to each other, as well as hosting events to draw each other's characters. Out of universe art sometimes shows up in-game as well.

Various creatures from the world are used as mounts, and those are the primary form of land transport. Some flying mounts exist, but air transport is mainly handled by airship. Itis common custom for people to show off their "sweet rides" to each other.

30. Who’s important in your world?

There are many NPCs who are vital to the plot, both in the base game and its updates and expansions, but I wanted to focus on a few in particular.

aulwyr_wbj_portrait.png

This is Aulwyr, a god who was corrupted and then lost his power in the fall of the world long ago. Even though he no longer has the power to stabilize the world, he goes around helping mortals with their wants and needs.

calabria_wbj_portrait.png

This is Calabria, the Dark Dragon. She cursed Aulwyr to become a monster heroes would try to slay, directly leading to the loss of his powers and the fall of the world. However out of character she and Aulwyr are good friends.

imaldris_wbj_portrait.png

I also met a particular Player talking to them- one Imaldris, real name unknown. He seems fond of Aulwyr - could they be - no, impossible...

But this concludes my time with this game. THIS game. Eventually, I will visit a world of many games....

--------------------

Umbra here! That's it for this year, but be sure to look for Part 2 of my Relationship Level Up WBJs! Anyway once again time to scramble for Artfight.

I may have fallen a few days behind, lets catch up shall we?

Day 16, Pokemon List
From where do pokémon get their power in your world? (Tell me about your Infinity Energy, Aura, or speculative scientific headcanons.)
Honestly, I haven't put too much though into this one. Its something that I didn't think of because I never really felt like I needed to. Sometimes, things are best left unexplained. To me, half the fun of fiction is just the wonder of the unknown, the unexplained mysteries that make you think "How did this happen" or "Why is 'X' capable of 'Y'?" But thats enough rambling, here's the answer you are looking for:

For the most part, they just have it. Pokemon are pokemon, they have most of their wacky abilities due to genetics or the fact that their ancestors had them at their creation or evolved to have them over time. But there is something they don't have as naturally anymore.
Now, do you remember the weapon I mentioned in my day four answer that created a bunch of space-time radiation? Well it was powered by a mixture of Infinity Energy and Dynamax Energy (Was it ever actually named in the games? I can't remember), which are known for being perfectly stable sources of energy that definitely haven't caused any side affects to people or Pokémon that involve the distortion of space or forced evolution.
Well it turns out, this radiation has some fun side effects.
Firstly, Pokémon cannot evolve without going to locations that are heavy with this energy. It doesn't matter what their level is or if they have the required items, if their current location isn't radiating evolution energy, then it won't happen. These locations are always enveloped in mystery dungeons, and while most who are able to evolve can waltz right through them, it isn't uncommon for a Pokémon to hire an exploration team to escort them to the end of the dungeon so that they can evolve.

Day 17, Pokemon List
What’s medicine and healthcare like in your world?
Berries, seeds, and herbal remedies. Healthcare isn't free, but it also doesn't break the bank to get treated for most injuries or disease. Some illnesses require rarer and more expensive herbs, and broken bones are usually dealt with through splints constructed out of wood.

Day 18, Pokemon List
What is clothing and fashion like in your world?
It isn't uncommon for Pokémon to be seen wearing accessories such as scarves, bows, and bracelets, but for the most part there isn't a ton that the common 'mon worries about. Cloaks and robes are normal to see too, but when it comes to explorers it usually comes down to function over fashion.

Day 19, Pokémon List
What does war look like in your world? If there is none, why not?
Really large scale Pokémon battles, with each side led by a strategic specialist. Armies are for the most part made up of just average Pokémon, either volunteers or draftees.
The wars are violent and leave plenty of destruction in their wake, considering the power of many different Pokémon moves.

Day 20, Pokémon List
How do battle items work in your world? TMs?
If battle items is talking about the X-Items, they are pretty much steroids. They are pills that temporarily enhance the abilities of a Pokémon, and it unfortunately isn't rare for a Pokémon to rely on them as a shortcut to strength, with many finding the rush they provide addicting and becoming irritable without them.
TM's function through being inserted into old machines left behind by the ancient humans, or by giving them to a member of the porygon line, which are capable of reading the information on the discs and relay it to a Pokémon. They are essentially instructional videos that open a Pokémon's mind to allow them to use the moves.

Day 21, Pokémon List
What jobs do pokémon work in your world?
There are Pokémon who work as members of exploration or rescue teams, as I have mentioned before. But when it comes to safer, more common jobs, you can find merchants, bakers, farmers, town guards, craftsmen, sailors, if it is a job, it is done by Pokémon.

Day 22, Pokémon List
What do people do for fun in your world?
Many younger Pokémon play games such as tag or hide-and-seek. Others read stories, race, or even battle for fun.

Day 23, Pokémon List
What are battles like in your world?
Battles can vary depending on who is participating and where they are happening. Some battles are small friendly fights between friends, others are large, flashy tournament fights, both with minimal risk involved. But when it comes to battles within dungeons, they are often life-or-death encounters. Outlaws battle to keep bounty hunters and guards from catching them, and dungeon Pokémon fight any Pokémon that are intruding in their home in with primal fury.

Day 24, Pokémon List
What are the routes/mystery dungeons in your world like?
Mystery Dungeons are locations with ever-changing layouts of rooms and even floors that defy laws of space and time. Some have no exit other than their entrance, while others are pathways that, if utilized well, can save time for travelers who would otherwise have to take a longer path. Some are easy to traverse, others are home to dangerous Pokémon and perilous conditions such as unstable weather. One universal factor in mystery dungeons are the dungeon winds, which are believed to be what reshapes them daily.

Day 25, Pokémon List
What do people carry with them on a daily basis in your world?
Most don't carry much, just some Poké in order to purchase goods, and maybe a berry to snack on. Explorers bring their badges and bags with them at all times, though what they bring varies from orbs to seeds. Those who traverse mystery dungeons but aren't part of exploration guilds carry items called Help Orbs. These are reusable orbs designed so that a Pokémon who is in danger can send a message to the nearest guild to request a rescue if they are trapped and have no other method of escape. Most Pokémon never have to use them, but those who traverse dungeons on the regular rarely travel without them.

Day 26, Pokémon List
What sorts of art exist in your world?
Painted portraits (Mostly commissioned by wealthier individuals), novels, and statues of heroes.

Day 27, Pokémon List
How do people get around in your world?
When not by foot, many opt to join caravans travelling from one town to another. Rideable carts pulled by Pokémon are available, for a fee. Sea travel is done by boats built to replicate the way that some Pokémon can float or swim through the water effortlessly. Air travel for the average Pokémon is still in progress, but hot air balloons based on Drifblim are an idea being tossed around by inventors.

Day 28, Pokémon List
What are some of the dangers of your world?
There are the usual dangers, such as dungeon Pokémon, harsh weather, and the desert. But one less common danger is the dungeon winds. While it is a common theory that these winds are the reason that dungeons rearrange daily, it is a fact that the winds affect the minds of Pokémon trapped within dungeons. Short-term exposure to the winds can cause amnesia and disorientation, but long-term exposure can lead to insanity or to a Pokémon reverting to primal instincts. If a Pokémon enough time trapped within a dungeon getting exposed to the winds, it can potentially lead to a forced evolution.

Day 29, Pokémon List
How does the PC or post system work in your world?
The post system in Santorenna is funded by the Santorenna Council, and letters from one town to another are usually delivered by flying Pokémon for the sake of efficiency. Post offices are set up in every town and city for the sending and receiving of letters, and once they arrive at the post office the letters are delivered to the mailbox of the recipient by whatever local is working there. The post system is well funded, and probably the only thing that the Santorenna Council doesn't debate about or try to take advantage of for political purposes.

Day 30, Pokémon List
What role do legendaries play in your world?
Legendaries are just that- legends. They are the subject of myth, of religion. Stories of old that speak of the worlds creation, the reasons for weather. Some claim that mystery dungeons are a byproduct of a battle between Dialga and Palkia. Some say that the noble families of Santorenna are chosen by the Great Arc. Others claim to have met the legendaries, saying that they are just very powerful Pokémon that, other than their strength, are just like every other Pokémon.

WBJ 2024 Prompt 5 Part 1 - "Culture"

From kyeugh’s prompt:

With this prompt, you can paint a picture of your world’s beating heart.

Breaking One’s Shackles

Even before the current civilizations of -zmer were around, it was known that a very small fraction of people had been born in the sister world of -fríd. It would happen every once in a while, when the Shackle went into its period of more fervent activity, that objects and people could – if they were lucky – move from one world to the other.

But this kind of “free jump” was not the one that would allow explorers to scout new lands and report their discoveries, or empires to send their armies to conquer new lands and bring back tributes, or even the kind that would allow a hero to go vanquish a great evil and return, years later, with quite the adventure to tell.

For taking the leap comes with a cost. It means leaving your life behind, in more ways than one.

The Garrison of the Oftborn is a small institution, in many ways similar to a PMD Guild. Established a little under two thousand years ago in the northern half of the world of -zmer, its purpose is to keep tabs on the activity of the Shackle’s shade upon the face of -zmer, grab any Oftborn – those who made it through the Shackle from the sister world – in the area and try integrate them to -zmer society.

It is currently formed by four active branches: the Explorers monitor Shackle activity; the Gatekeepers keep tabs on neighbouring tribes and civs; the Rescuers grab jumpers in the first place; and the Schoolnuns who shelter, teach and retrain the jumpers.

In the end their mission is one, born out of a mixture of respect and fear for the strong phenomenon that can bind together two worlds in the void of space. To protect those who have made the jump, and help them begin anew.

An important mission given the unique circumstances surrounding the opportunity that an Oftborn even makes it through the energy channel alive.

Someone who made it through whole, has had most or all of their memories erased, sometimes not even remembering more than how to speak their own language. They bring no baggage of family, of grudges, of hopes, of love. Even if they could remember their family, they won’t be able to get back to them – in body nor mind, as the trip back would for sure erase their memories this time.

But an Oftborn also has had their body’s “memories” of their life cleaned. Illnesses or wounds, markings or adornments, and to a point even the ravages of age, are removed and undone.

Thus an Oftborn is in many ways like a newborn – hence their name, they are Pokémon who thanks to the Shackle have broken the shackles of their previous life and are now born anew, to make their life in the new world; one that where possible welcomes them and nurtures as a new home.

For even if you had to leave Mother’s shade, may Aunt’s own shade light your way.

I couldn't complete this one beforehand due to work, sorry for that, but here it is. A look at how a third party views conflict in the worlds under the Shackle:

WBJ 2024 Prompt 5.2 "Culture:

A Toast for Your Failures

Depending on who you ask in the world of -fríd, the people of Notgos are either unfaithful, opportunistic leechers upon the lands of Edros, or clever naturalists who have taken the teachings of the old ways of life in Edros to its ultimate expression.

But for notge themselves, those perceptions matter not. What matters, in particular for those who work for border "transportation clubs" and "security services" like the Salient Intakers, is that every few months some unmanned carriage zips across the border, coming from the neighbour nation of Nevareona.

And what the members of these clubs totally must do, is to pursue those wagons, which bear the craftmonship and the trimmings of Nevareona, halt them, audit the contents – which happen to be a good lot of free food and goods, as well as money in convenient Notgos currency – and as very dutiful notge citizens, have them sent back to their rightous owners.

Totally.

For, you see, there is a sad tint to the war between Nevareona and the Mlyenne Cluster that no one that side of the border likes to talk about: the war has gone for decades and it’s not looking like Nevareona can win it.

In the least Nevareona is not playing stupid, however. The country knows that two wars are much harsher to fight than one, and thus they make recurrent efforts to keep their southern neighbours of Notgos entertained, unbothered, moisturised, flourishing, unconcerned by such possibilities as war, raiding and strife.

Notgos guardians are not stupid either. They know that these “accidental” bribes can keep their country going for several years, and that for as long as the war to the north goes on, Notgos will be able to dedicate a fair portion of their resources to escalating the Pyramid of Needs.

So, next time you are heading to the border to cross and feel like being a good samaritan by rescuing a wayward carriage or helping fishing up some crates that were swept away by the river,

Don’t!

The Notgos guards are already on it. You’d be interrupting their fun very resposible activities and teamwork that they bring together to aid their dearest Nevareonan neighbours.

What you can do, once you cross the border to Notgos, is to head for the nearest tavern. Later during the night, we guarantee you, you can join in the festivities.

Including a toast, for the Eternal Platitudes from the North, and a war that – much like the pulse of the Shackle that bathes Notgos’s coast and tints their western skies – may peak at times, may grumble all the while, may even contribute to the region’s tourism,

but may it never end.
