She helped Cynthian to her feet and to her senses, saying quietly, "Y'did splendidly, partner," before making her way out of the arena.

R13 ~ Team Spectrum versus Team Drumstick

The Colosseum was busy. Only a day after the last fight had been taken care of, another landmark showdown had been scheduled, this time with the oldest Omen Heroes currently alive on Cibus. Bone stood at the far end of the arena, facing down Brisa, Starr, and Dave. Yes, she was familiar. They'd exchanged pleasantries as they always had, and soon, they were ready to throw down... as Nugget referred to it.
"And so, the battle between Team Drumstick and Team Spectrum will commence..." Incineroar raised his arm. "Ready... and... begin!"
"Let's start standard," Bone replied serenely, and she did not move from her spot. Nugget sped forward, ready to brawl; Tender lunged next, though it seemed he was much more focused on something far away...
"We may be 'old school,' Nugget said, hopping from foot to foot, "but we'll show you the power of experience!"
"And so, the battle between Team Drumstick and Team Spectrum will commence..." Incineroar raised his arm. "Ready... and... begin!"

Dave wasn't sure how he'd let Brisa talk him into this. Apparently she and Starr had had a Colosseum match scheduled against the Marowak/Blaziken/Absol team, and they were going to have Vix along with them, only now Vix was dead, and they really really needed a third person and everyone else had their hands full with a dozen other matches. He had a lot of other shit to do but Brisa was just so fucking excited about fighting matches with Starr and goddamn it, he wasn't going to make them cancel just because he had negative interest in this whole Colosseum battle thing. It was just another fight. He could fight just fine.
He already regretted this when he arrived and there was a cheering audience of rowdy Cibusian sports fans and Incineroar grandiosely announcing their presence and he was rapidly breaking into fucking hives, but whatever, he was here and he could probably kick Team Drumstick's asses better than fucking Vix could.
He stared at their opponents and tried to call on his Radiance, but it wasn't coming. What the fuck was the point of this fight? Why were they even doing this? Why should he care?
He glanced over at Brisa, already in position. Starr was on her other side, grinning at her, and Brisa grinned back, all joy of battle. For a moment he considered telling them never mind, he wasn't doing this, or they could do it alone, and he could see the hurt and disappointment in Brisa's face. Goddamn it.
A spark of Radiance bloomed in the back of his head, and whatever that was about, he'd take it. He was not about to ruin this for them, no matter how inane.

Starr stood at the one end of the arena, sizing up the opponents this time around. The Drumsticks didn't look near as intimidating as the last opponent they'd faced, but there was something to be said about the cool confidence of a group that'd done this sort of thing a hundred times over and saved the world on top of it. They'd fought legends and won too, just like Team Spectrum.
It was supposed to be her standing here with Brisa and VIx. They'd had a whole plan ready to go and everything. But Vix was... Well. She was gonna be gone for a while.
She'd be fine. Diyem would get her back. He had to.
Anyway. Brisa had been sure she'd be able to find someone else to fill the empty team slot. What Starr hadn't been counting on was that she'd pick Dave of all people. Especially since he looked like he'd basically be pretty much anywhere else. Her best guess was that he just... was willing to come so that Brisa wouldn't have to give up the match? That was something at least.
Well, whatever. So long as he was willing to bust his ass helping them win, the reason didn't really matter.
Starr met Brisa's eye as they got into position, ready to fight. "You fucking took Lugia down so I know you'll be able to kick some ass against these three," she said, flashing her a grin.

Brisa shivered with anticipation, and it sent sparks of plasma and Radiance off her mane.

Suddenly, as if they'd been expecting it from Tender, Nugget and Bone leapt high into the air. Bone had used her club as a means to gain some extra air, and with that gesture, they all leapt into the air.
Bone winced, landing roughly on her feet as Dave's frightening gaze shook her. "That would have paralyzed all of us..." She pointed at Brisa. "Beware that one! She has a reputation for disrupting her foes!"
"I'm more worried about that one! I don't want her setting up, so I'm gonna beat her up!"
"Do not think you can hide behind your barriers against me," Tender warned. "I can foresee your movements!"

Brisa threw out another broad burst of paralysing energy with a snarl, determined to slow their opponents down.
Don't get ahead of yerself. Another onslaught like that'll take you the fuck out.
She grit her teeth and shed the excess corruption generated by her plasma-soaked body. Could she use that power to keep clear of Bone's confounding earthen attacks? As Brisa generated enough electromagnetism in her body to repel her body from the ground itself, her paws no longer touched the surface of the Colosseum arena...

Goddamn that Absol. Now she had some idea of how their usual enemies felt dealing with Celeste. Well, if they were so intent on dodging everything Brisa could dish out, then Starr was more than willing to punish that. She’d been meaning to try out a new move too—all the better to use it when facing a Blaziken.
“Don’t let up!” she called out to Brisa. “They can’t dodge both of us!” Flames roared to life on her legs as she dashed forward for the attack.

Brisa lit up with energy and... fucking stood up, on her hind legs, ethereal chains growing from her arms, broken. And then just... ran forward bipedally to attack, as if nothing were more natural. "Brisa, wh... the fuck?!"
And not long after that she just lifted off the goddamn ground. Dave stared after her and wondered if he was fucking losing it. She was fighting like she was born for it, like it was nothing unusual that she'd just gone and casually transformed into something weird and gangly (Jean, too tall, limbs too long, everything misproportioned, face distorted), a... something approaching a Zeraora? (A legendary.) (Soda's unsettling halfway body, half transformed into a god, demanding immortality)

"Look away!" Tender shouted; it was all the time he had as a looming wraith seemed to echo out of Dave's very person, locking Bone's feet in place for only a moment. She looked away, avoiding the other volley... but the Paralysis still settled in regardless.
"Tch... Very good. You're coordinated. But do not think... you can easily disrupt us. We've dealt with far worse!"
Bone slammed her club on the ground and threw herself next to Nugget, holding up a guarding stance.
"Everyone... focus your attacks," Bone grunted, trying to keep Nugget in particular from losing track of opponents. "If we don't take one of them out now, they will outpace us!"
"Okay. Okay!" Nugget nodded. "Focus time..."

Tender saw a horrible Crunch attack coming that would make his defenses weak in one fell swoop. He wouldn't allow that... But he also foresaw an even more horrible disaster. There was no way out of it, was there? But he had no time to consider. He dodged, then shouted, "Be careful of--" But Brisa was too quick.
Tender went flying back, rolling weakly on the ground. He couldn't fight after that one... But it was impossible to tell if he'd seen disaster or victory for the rest of his team.
"Nugget!" Bone shouted. "Aside!"
"Huh?!"
"Oww," Nugget complained.

Dave's jaws snapped shut on nothing as the Absol dodged out of the way - straight into Starr and Brisa, who pummeled him with that coordinated combination of moves they tended to use for the real fights. "I'm going all-out!" Brisa yelled, and he pulled on another dose of Radiance unthinkingly, forming golden barriers of light around her.
His fur shone brighter than he'd ever seen it before, and within him he felt some kind of tipping point being reached, the Radiance self-reinforcing. Oh. Oh, no--
For a delirious moment he was just going to let it happen, see what it felt like. Instead, the very Radiance filling him insisted no. He had to, had to survive, just for a bit, so that Brisa could--

Something punched him in the jaw and he saw stars. Another to the side of the head sent everything spinning and he barely knew what was up or down. Then, a burning kick to the chest, and he collapsed in an aching heap.
He wondered why anyone just did this willingly, for fun, but the glow of battle hormones was already soothing the pain. It wasn't a victory buzz, but there was a grim, purposeful satisfaction in it: if Nugget had to hit him that hard, at least those were all attacks that were not hitting Brisa and Starr.
His fur shone brighter than he'd ever seen it before, and within him he felt some kind of tipping point being reached, the Radiance self-reinforcing. Oh. Oh, no--

Shit, Dave was down. But he'd saved her – fucking narrowly – from defeat. There was a path to victory and she could see it.
"We won't get a better chance'n this!" Brisa shouted, exchanging a glance with Starr before fixing her vision on Nugget.
The blaziken had to go.

Starr's heart was pounding. Tender was down. They had a shot, they actually had a shot--
"Keep going! Don't let up! You've got this!" she yelled.
If Nugget managed to attack, they were screwed. But there wasn't a chance in hell that Brisa wouldn't pull it off. She'd spent the whold fight in that form--that new Zeraora form. Each time Starr caught a glimpse of it out of the corner of her eye, she had to remind herself that that was really Brisa. She was so much stronger now...And happier this way, right?

It kept happening. Kept getting worse. Why now? Why after all this time?

Nugget was down next in another flurry, and in that same parallel, Bone saw an opening and took it.
Nugget groaned from the back of the arena. "Ow ow ow... that..." he rolled onto his back. "Yep... a lot stronger than I thought... Ha ha..."
"...How poetic," Bone said, turning to face Brisa. "Now, it is just the two of us. I do wonder if this was planned from the start..."

But so was Starr.
Y'ain't at yer best without her by yer side. The odds are slimmer now, the light dimmer... But just fer a moment there, wasn't she burnin' up somethin' fierce? She's a goddamn meteor.
Every fight from now on was another chance to see Starr pull off something that incredible again.
It was just her and Bone, now, and like the lady veteran was saying, it had been planned from the start. After all, Brisa's electromagnetism was their best bet at a drawn out win against the team's leader, so it made sense to keep her ready for the final push. And the way they'd achieved that...
Starr's belief in her, her endless drills, her encouragement... The kind of support she'd always wanted. The teamwork that made her so much stronger than she ever could be alone. Enough to fucking win.
She alone of her team still stood on the arena ground . . . but she didn't stand alone.
Time to give her best shot. Starr would expect nothin' less.

"Khh..." Bone stumbled, losing her balance only briefly before warding Brisa off with another precise, sweeping swing with her club. She tried to follow up with another strike, but she could only get in a rough jab with her club afterward.
"It seems... that you are at your end," Bone said, but her grip on her club seemed overcompensatingly firm. An otherworldly electricity infested her scales; it seemed to be an unfamiliar sensation to her.
In the background, the great figure of Owen was making odd motions, like he was dancing, holding two hot dogs in either hand and crossing them. Dancing... crossing hot dogs?
Meanwhile, Bone was making subtle gestures with her club rather than pursuing Brisa. Her grip strengthened again, and she seemed to have a bit of her energy back. Still, she looked tired overall. Ethereal wisps of light danced around her, like blades crossing in the air.
