On his lower back was a crown of armor. It looked almost like...

Her strongest hit just hadn't been enough. And then it was undone. Wasted effort! Brisa stood, panting, staring down their empowered foe. Legendary blessings, huh? She'd need her allies at her best to get past this.

"Cynthian, we need your best to finish of Cepa! Get ready to dodge what y'can and take what y'can't!"

Protective barriers formed up all around her as she called the shots. She'd get through this, she would, she would... She'd make her team proud.

So, Balm wasn’t just a powerful warrior, but he was a frigging Dialga-in-training!

That… didn’t bode too well.

Icetales’ eyes widened in dread when he saw the Flash Cannon headed in Cynthian’s way, and bolted in front of the Roserade to take the silver bullet.

The attack smashed through the veil of auroras, then into the Ninetales. The liquid metal reacted violently with his fae nature, making him shout in pain. But it wasn’t over, no! A barrage of leaves cut through his pelt, but he endured that assault more easily. If all, he basically got a new trim.

He forced himself back on his feet and shook his head to regain his bearings, then focused on his healing energy. The bells chimed once, then again. After that, a new rainbow barrier was cast in front of the trio.

“Ah… Ah.” Icetales forced a grin and stood once more beside Cynthian, letting his tails flow in the wind. “A time dragon and a cosmic daemon… My. How fitting that is…”

She looked at Icetales, still shielding Cynthian with his body as he whipped up more spells. He could take on more corruption. She, rapidly, could not. She'd take a breather, just for a bit...

Only the faint buzzing of the crowd ringed into Icetales’ ears as he laid on the floor, panting after the latest assault.

Goodness, that Balm… he was a force to be reckoned. Of course, he had to expect that. From a would-be god.

Shakily, he stood back up — beaten, but with still some vigor in his body. He glanced wearily at his comrades, trying to see if they had withstood the barrage of moves.

They were still… standing. He chuckled to himself, feeling reassured and heartened by that.

But he… needed something more. He needed…

Icetales stared at Brisa. Time seemed to have stopped for him, as he stared into those eyes.

Trust. He saw that. Trust.

He wasn’t going to disappoint his team. He was going to show his full power. He had to do it.

Something pulsed inside of Icetales…

Trails of Radiance and Shadow came from his tails, making them look like golden and azure comets. Then, Icetales closed his eyes, and his mind was sucked deep into himself.

Black. White. A starry night.

The air around the Ninetales was bent and distorted, with the light being absorbed into his body — the more photons vanished into his pelt, the darker and darker he became. Until there was no more light to absorb, leaving behind only a black blob.

There was a whistle, then an explosion of Blacklight. Radiance burst in front of the cosmic entity, wrapping around his neck like rings of comets and jets, held in place by the intense gravity. Shadow erupted on the back, taking the shape of a cloud of nebulas and stardust.

Icetales Unleashed his power…

The eyes snapped open, brighter than the sun. Menacing fangs were flashed to his opponent, ready to unveil his true power. And so he did, by summoning a Blacklight Quasar that engulfed the arena and darkened the sky.

The midday had just become midnight, and
Time and Space were going to face off at the Colosseum.

Icetales stopped guarding Cynthian. Instead…

Icetales Unleashed his true form: Cosmic Warlock, gaining the power of the fae and the darkness!

Icetales chained Shining Revontulet into Umbral Nebula, summoning Blacklight Quasar!

Brisa grit her teeth and got to working herself up to a later burst of energy. For now all she had to do was tough this out.

"Ngh... You hit hard. But I can take a lot more than that, now! I'm not so weak!" He stomped on the ground as a wave of divine energy exploded outward from him. "And during your frenzy... you left yourselves open to one... weak point!"

He went for Cynthian again, but then pivoted toward Icetales, firing a few quick Flash Cannons for later, perhaps. What was his plan?

But then, the blade of energy that had extended from his hand met its mark. Balm was terrifyingly accurate in his strikes, now--there seemed to be no avoiding his attacks now. And the opponent that was crouched down and about to strike... He would strike first!

With a roar that seemed to warp time itself, Balm struck Brisa down.

Once the smoke cleared and the tachyons dissipated into nothing, it became apparent what had just transpired.

Brisa, the Dark Warrior and star of the Colosseum… had fallen. A defeated lynx that withstood the destruction and warping of time itself.

She had given her all to support her comrades, and now it was up to them.

A rose and a fox with troubled pasts versus the demigod of time. But they both knew. The only way for them was forward, no matter the result.

They were going down… together.

Icetales focused to clear his thoughts and used all the healing magic he could afford, managing to hold back the shadows that were infesting his mind. Then, he brought out the invigorating energy of his Radiance.

“Dost not surrender now, my dear! We have come this far, we shall persevere to the bitter end!”

They nodded in silent agreement, and Cynthian fired her volley of attacks, while Icetales reverted to his original form, ready to defend her.

Those attacks were so brilliant, powerful, mighty. And once her Blacklight reached its peak, she let it all out.

Like a beautiful supernova.

Cynthian snapped back to reality and the fire in her eyes returned. She made eye contact with Icetales and smiled, she she stared down at Balm across the battlefield.

"You're right! Let's push on together all the way, Love!"

That was really it. The end of the battle was coming, and with falling comets of Radiance above them all.

In a way or another, it was going to end.

Icetales bathed himself in some healing magic to soothe his pain and regain some strength, before bestowing some of his power to Cynthian. The golden light cloaked the Roserade who proceeded to fire a volley of Radiance-boosted projectiles, and Icetales was more than ready to lend her a paw.

Radiance and Shadow flickered around his body, making him glow with an intense black glimmer. Then, with a determined howl, he unleashed that energy all at once, striking Balm with the explosive power of a supernova.

And there he stood, the Blacklight gone from his system, with the vague blue light reminiscent of a neutron star.

Was it over…?

They had a sense that the battle was nearly over. And as such, it seemed that both recognized that it was time to take on the final volley on both sides. Balm powered through the Pin Missiles and saw Icetales in the way; with draconic fury, he raised his hands, deflected several Pin Missiles, took more in the torso, and then fired a barrage of Flash Cannons and--once up close--a flurry of Leaf Blades.

A loud buzzer rang out and Balm skidded to a stop, looking up. "What?" he breathed.

"And that's the match!" Incineroar called, glancing at the clock. "It seems that both sides of the battlefield were truly giving it their all... But now, the battle is over."

"But--but who wins?" Balm said.

"You never saw a match go to timeout before, have you?" Cepa asked, floating forward. "Once the battle is done... the vitality if the fighters is measures, and judges make a call from that. Depending on how you look there... that'll be the winner!"

Balm seemed stunned, somehow. He looked at Cepa, then at Icetales, Cynthian, and Brisa.

"In other words," Cepa said, giggling, "you ran out of time!"

Balm looked horrified...

The crowd roared, but during the judgements, Balm and stepped to the team to help them up and recover their strength. He seemed dissatisfied, perhaps even frustrated, but he tried not to show it. He smiled at them. "I want to fight you again," he said. "One day. I won't be satisfied until our battle comes to a proper finish."

Brisa got to her feet and shook off the Colosseum dust.

"Weren't expectin' that," she murmured. So, Balm could pull off a trick a lot like her own. Interesting.

She went in for the usual concession pawshakes, and smiled fondly at Cynthian and Icetales. Not a victory, no, but a very, very close loss against a truly formidable opponent.

That'd do.

Icetales grumbled as he sat up once more, before shaking the dust off of his pelt. By the stars, he felt like he had a constellation of pain pulsating inside of him!

Though, that wasn’t a problem anymore as the medics applied the first medications. He craned his neck to look at the results.

Oh. So they lost. Though, he wasn’t unhappy about that, no. They lost, but they were so close!

Months ago, he would have thought to going toe to toe with a demigod was almost impossible, and yet… they did it.

Even if they lost, there was some merit in pushing that duo to their limit.

His tails started to wag, but golly! He definitely needed a strong tea after all of this!

"I want to fight you again," he said. "One day. I won't be satisfied until our battle comes to a proper finish."

Icetales stared intently at Balm, before bowing with respect and flashing a bright grin. “Anytime. Just let us know and we shall see to arrange another duel, yes?”

He glanced at Cynthian and gave her a quick nuzzle to show how proud he was that she managed to keep standing despite all of that, then he turned to Brisa.

That light in her eyes… made him feel better.

“I hope I made thee proud, Brisa,” he muttered, showing a relaxed grin. “I know I am feeling proud of myself now.”

"Y'did splendidly," affirmed Brisa. "Y'took instruction damn well, y'know. I dare say we we're in with more'n a fightin' chance come time fer a rematch, if ya keep learnin' as fast as that."

She levelled her eyes at Balm and tilted her head in curiosity.

"Say, fella. Mind if I ask what the story is behind yer path to Ascension?"
