Chapter 147: Imperial March

The ringing didn't leave Leo's ear frills for several seconds. It took even longer to get the stars out of his vision.

And why dirt brushing against his fur instead of gravel or concrete? Wasn't Leo supposed to be in Dazzels right now?

C'mon, think!

One moment, he and the others were staring down Paradox. And the next... the deoxys disappeared and a colossal zygarde rose up from the ruins of the Parliament building.

Now Leo was lying in the dirt. No doubt, he got flung through a rift. But to where?

"Uggggggggggggggh." Groaning, the cosmic arceus staggered to his feet. "Anyone get the number on that runaway charjabus?"

No response. In fact, Leo didn't sense any familiar auras near him.

Leo looked around. He was on a tiny dirt hill, far on the outskirts of the city. Fortunately he could see the zygarde robot, firing blue beams from four serpent-like ribbons protruding from its back.

Not good. Leo jumped into the air. He needed to get back into the city and help with—

His wheel flickered. Leo looked over shoulder. This feeling... were there Plates nearby? He'd already sensed the Mind Plate on Paradox, but now he sensed another.

... No. He sensed more than one.

"What the heck?" Leo turned around, only to gurgle in surprise when thick, metallic vines wrapped themselves around him. They got his legs. Latched onto his wheel. Even coiled their way up to his head.

Leo's heart rate spiked. Metal and grass meant fire. All he had to do was draw out the Flame Plate and this would be no problem.

"Have you enjoyed your return to form?"

Leo's eyes widened. That voice!

The vines tightened their grip. Pointed stones dug into Leo's hide. Their jagged edges threw off his concentration.

White light took a humanoid shape in front of him.

"Because your little adventure has run its course," Zodiark said. "I told you before... these plates are mine."

Leo thrashed about. But the more he moved, the tighter the vines gripped him. Why couldn't he call forth his Plates? Or the Red Chain fragments that he had?

Several playing cards drifted around Zodiark's silhouette. "All that's left to do is wait to grab the final piece. And then the Eternaverse shall take root."

Leo tried to yell. The vines blocked him. He had no telepathy to fall back on. And the Plates wouldn't respond. Were all of Zodiark's Paradigm fragments countering them? This was ridiculous!

The silhouette got closer. Leo's fur stood on end. His movements slowed. His mind grew fuzzy.

... No! That couldn't happen! He had to stop Paradox! He had to help his friends!

He had to... had to... had to serve his wielder.

A silvally with a gold-trimmed cape stood in front of him. "Don't forget," he whispered gently.

Leo squeezed his eyes shut. With the last of his strength, he shrank his aura as much as possible.

It didn't take long for the vines' suffocating grips to stop.

"Get up, Iggy!" Shimmer pleaded. "We've gotta move!"

Chilly hooves shoved Igneous' side. The grovlazzle's eyes opened to a blurry cobblestone alley. Swathes of orange, purple, and blue flashed in front of him.

Eyes widening, Igneous pushed himself up. He put his claws on Shimmer's left shoulder, letting the ponytales help him back to his feet.

"What happened?" Igneous asked, rubbing the stars from his eyes. He nearly fell over again when the ground trembled beneath his feet.

"P-Paradox summoned a giant robot." Shimmer laughed nervously. "It roared so loud that it knocked us all off our feet."

Igneous finally settled enough for him to see Nikki running around ahead of him, swinging her lightning guitar wildly to deflect fireballs from the two Iron Moths hovering overhead. Igneous was about to ask how the toxtricity was holding her own like that, when he looked up to see a dragapult leading multiple dragonite and salamence in blasting the Iron Moths from above with Dragon Pulses.

"Remember the plan!" Yiazmat called. "We must press forward! Even with that infernal machine!" She turned around and blasted Dragon Darts behind her.

Igneous rubbed his eyes again. "Right." He looked at Shimmer. "You good?"

"A bit rattled." Shimmer shook himself out. "But I'll manage."

"Then let's move." Igneous' volcarona wings came to life. He conjured Honedge and flew forward, sticking close to the ground. "Heads up, Nikki!"

She glanced over her shoulder and nodded. "Yo, Bugbot! Catch!" Nikki shouted, hurling her lightning guitar up like a giant tomahawk. The Iron Moth directly above her was too busy contending with two salamence to react in time.

Seeing the lightning guitar get buried in Iron Moth's base, Igneous slashed the air with Honedge. Fiery crescents raced forward and struck the lightning guitar. It burst apart in a ball of white-hot plasma. Nikki dove onto her belly. Heat washed over her. Embers showered her leather jacket. The toxtricity rolled along the street to put them out.

Igneous saw a faint pink glow approaching the second Iron Moth. He pivoted right and tossed Honedge forward. "Shim!" he called.

"I got you!" the ponytales responded. His Psychic caught Honedge and propelled it forward. Honedge pierced through Iron Moth's metal torso and came out the other end. Iron Moth's electronic eyes went dark. It plummeted to the ground, landing beside its counterpart with a metallic THUD.

"Are they down?" Shimmer asked. He hesitantly approached the one with the hole in it and poked its base with an icy forehoof.

[Y... ou...] Static garbled Iron Moth's voice. [You won't... win.]

[You can't... defeat... Paradox,] the other Iron Moth added. Its voice was a static mess, too. [Just... give up.]

"Pfbt." Nikki ran her hands through her lightning mohawk. "Maybe that's what your dumb asses did when you got caught in Venish. But me? Not a chance."

She held her right arm out. Her lightning guitar appeared in swarms of purple and yellow sparks. "I— no, we have things we're fighting for. And we'll be damned if we let any of you get in the way."

Neither Iron Moth responded. Igneous walked past the toxtricity, scanning the air above them.

"Yiazmat and her forces are keeping the Eternatus Troopers off our tails," the grovlazzle said. "We've gotta keep moving." He pointed forward, where the head and shoulders of Paradox's giant zygarde robot peeked out from behind rows of tall buildings.

"T-Toward it?" Shimmer's tails frazzled.

"They really need us there, don't you think?" Igneous started forward, embers crackling along his back.

Sighing, Shimmer trotted after him. "I know! I just wish they didn't!"

From behind the two, Nikki said, "Yo, Boss Kitty! We've got a giant zygarde robot at the Parliament building! Just what's the situation?"

Gene stood facing the monitor bank, gaze darting between the screens, the skorps furiously typing away at the keyboards, and Cid and Cyril hastily scribbling things down on strewn about sheets of paper.

"We're still trying to get a handle on that ourselves." The mega mewtwo glanced at Cid. "You getting anything?"

The orbeetle shook his head. "For once, I'm at a loss! Whatever this thing is, it must be so full of Malice— err, Eterna energy that it's completely blocking my Dynascan!"

Gene's tail twitched in irritation. It was now plain as day why the emperor hadn't put proper resources into protecting Citadark. He was putting everything behind this invasion force.

"They're afraid out there," Dark Matter growled. "They need direction. You're failing them."

If there was ever a time to butt out, it'd be now, Gene sneered. "Just how scattered about are people?"

Cyril turned around in his swivel chair. "Looks like Paradox jettisoned our heaviest hitters using rifts of his own. Leo got blown clear out of the city. Yuna's somewhere to the south. Noctum and Diamond are in the east with Valkyrie." He turned back to hunch over a laptop. "Igneous' team is about ten blocks south of the robot. They're hitting open roadways soon."

Claws tapped impatiently behind Gene. "How much longer are we going to stay in 'hiding,' Gene?" Widget asked. "If there was ever a time to spring into action, it'd be now."

"I'm aware." Gene turned to face the cosmic silvally. "But we only get one shot at catching Paradox off guard. If we charge out there without a hint of how to deal with that giant mech, then we're blowing our load early!"

Beside Widget, Bahamut crossed his arms. "And if we continue hesitating, our allies may wind up dead or captured. And just what sort of 'edge' will that give us, hmm?"

"I agree with them, for the record. This is a fool's errand."

Fool's errands have gotten us this far, Gene scoffed. But you can't trust me because 'trust is too painful' or whatever.

He turned back to the monitors. "Bird Team, head south and find Yuna!" Gene barked into the X-transceiver line. "Dog Team, go east! Get to Noctum! Heal Team, send some monk scouts to find Leo!"

"Aye," Zacian and Zamazenta said in unison.

"Grishi resent team name, but will follow."

"We're on it!"
Jade said, followed shortly by a, "Ack! Hey, who said you could shoot at a lady while her back is turned?"

Gene silenced his line and turned to the Bahamut and Widget. "See? It's still under control."

Neither of them looked convinced. Rolling his eyes, Gene returned to the monitor bank.

This would work. It had to work.

XxX

"Haaa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!"

Paradox's booming laughter roused Yuna from her stupor. The dragapult took to the air, flying along the street between several shuttered bank buildings. She waved her arms around to dispel dust and stray embers.

Medicis and pirates ran along side streets to keep Eternatus Brawlers off her back.

She stopped the moment a purple rift opened right in front of her. Yuna suddenly stared down one of the zygarde mech's serpentine ribbons. She rolled away from a large Dragon Pulse that swept through the air, destroying chunks of a First National Bank of Isola sign. Concrete and glass plinked and plunked on burning asphalt behind her.

"How do you like my special suit, you worthless rebels?" Paradox projected his voice through some sort of loudspeaker system. Yuna bet the whole city could hear him. "I call it the Iron Conqueror, in honor of the many planets that will be crushed beneath its heels!"

Iron Conqueror extended its ribbon through the rift and tracked Yuna. Meeping, Yuna dove to the ground. She phased through the street. The concrete around her trembled. Chunks of it were torn up. But she dodged whatever strike the ribbon tried. And she popped her triangular head out to see Reverse Time taking hold.

An idea sprang to mind. If Paradox was attacking through rifts, then why couldn't she use that for herself?

Before Reverse Time faded, she shot two Dragon Darts into the rift. They hit the serpent ribbon's tip, but it didn't react at all. And its chassis was too dark for Yuna to tell if she'd even done any damage!

The rift then shut. Paradox's laughter filled the air again.

"Was that supposed to be an attack? Oh, how adorable!" he crooned.

Another rift opened. Yuna immediately fired two Dragon Darts, but an Iron Hands emerged and swatted them away. Eternatus Gunners streamed out of the rift and opened fire with Ice Shards and Ice Beams. Yuna flew left along the surface of the road. Frosty air nicked her right hip.

"There's nothing you miserable rodents can do to even so much as scratch Iron Conqueror!" Paradox declared. "How about a little deal? Surrender now, and I'll offer all of you last meals before I turn you into batteries for my army!"

[I've really got to hand it to you, rebel!] Iron Hands slammed the ground. [You've really outdone yourself in the stupidity department!]

An electric shockwave raced out. Yuna flew up to dodge, only for an Ice Beam to strike her waist. Hissing, she drifted back, undulating her tail and ectoplasm to get the sleet off before it could settle in.

Her eyes widened when she saw three more Ice Beams heading right for her. She braced herself, only for orange lightning to vaporize the strikes. An orange blur slammed into one of the Gunners from below. It ricocheted into three more Gunners. All exploded into scrap metal.

[What?] Iron Hands threw its large yellow hands up in an attempt at shielding itself, but instead ended up getting yoinked into the air by a telekinetic force.

"Now, Quetzal!" Shiva said, wings spread wide as a pink glow surrounded her.

"Right!" The orange zapdos leaped into the air and delivered a Thunderous Kick to Iron Hands, sending it careening off into the distance.

Another rift opened in front of them, revealing one of Iron Conqueror's serpent ribbons. A Dragon Pulse raced toward Quetzal, who was completely defenseless.

"Oh no you don't!"

Ifrit swooped in from behind the other two birds. Black flames snuffed out the Dragon Pulse.

Yuna saw an orange glow from the corner of her eye. She flew against the side of a brick building and watched an Aeroblast sweep across the air. The orange beam shattered Eternatus Gunners and part of it got through the rift. Iron Conqueror yanked the ribbon away and shut the rift.

"That did something!" Yuna said, peeling herself off the brick building and waving at Jade.

"Really? Great!" the salugia chirped. She flapped in place while Ifrit and Shiva flew over to her side and Quetzal sprinted up a half-wrecked building to join them. "What'd I do?"

"Paradox is trying to have his machine snipe us from afar using the rifts," Yuna explained. She could see the massive zygarde robot firing large green rockets into the air. They burst into Thousand Waves that washed against a space pirate ship's shield.

"Then we shouldn't stay here," Ifrit said. The black moltres flapped his wings to carry him forward. "Onward!"

They only made about twenty meters before a rift opened, revealing a green missile that exploded into waves of glowing green hexagons.

"Get back!" Yuna shouted, thrusting her arms forward. Diamond shards filled the air to intercept the Thousand Waves. The Diamond Storm broke enough of the glowing hexagons apart for everyone to fly through.

"This is Bird Team," Shiva said, sweeping a pink beam through the sky to blow apart two Eternatus Gunners. Behind her, a space pirate ship opened fire with bursts of water and lightning, distracting half a dozen Iron Jugulis from giving chase. "We've got Yuna. We're pressing forward to the north!"

"Understood," Cyril said. "Dog Team, what's your status?"

XxX

"Grishi still not like name," the zorotwo said, shooting dark pulses from his claws like a kid playing pretend with finger guns. They struck an Iron Thorns blocking the center of the road, toppling it over. "But team find friends."

From his vantage point in the air a few meters over the street, Noctum watched Zacian slice apart an Iron Valiant into ribbons. Zamazenta charged ahead of her, forming a large shield that blocked a Thousand Waves racing out from a nearby rift.

"Quite the monstrosity!" Zamazenta shouted, dispelling the shield and charging forward. "What'd'ya suppose the odds are he's using that Red Chain fragment of his to empower it?"

"High!" Diamond called, galloping after Zamazenta. The keldeo slashed at the air repeatedly with his glowing horn. Secret Swords raced out, striking Eternatus Gunners along with a few robot delibird — Iron Bundles, according to their earlier briefing — taking aim from afar.

"What do we do about them?" Noctum wondered, flying after them. Valkyrie tried to keep pace along the right sidewalk. "The rifts open and shut too fast for me to try anything!"

"Maybe that's where I come in," Diamond called. "I just need the right moment."

"Iron Treads, dead ahead!" Zamazenta shouted, gesturing to a large red ball zooming toward them. Dozens of Eternatus Brawlers ran after it, maces brimming with flames or dragonfire.

Zacian leaped in front of her brother. Her sword exploded in size, brimming with blue energy. She slashed at Iron Treads, halting its momentum and knocking it backwards.

"Scatter!" one of the Brawlers shouted, but it was too late. Iron Treads barreled through the Brawlers like they were glorified bowling pins.

Grishi blipped in over the two dogs and held up his right hand. His psychic grasp caught three Eternatus Bombardiers readying Focus Blasts and flung them higher into the air, where they got caught in an exchange of Hyper Beam fire and blown apart. Napalm and broken glass rained down on a destroyed building to their right.

"You're a tenacious bunch of insects," Paradox said. "But your world will be the first in my soon to be sprawling trophy case!"

Two rifts opened ahead of the group, at a Y-shaped intersection.

"There!" Diamond cried. He pointed his horn and unleashed a beam of tachyons. The Roar of Time struck the rifts and froze Iron Conqueror's serpentine ribbons in place.

"Now, Noctum!" The cosmic keldeo pointed his foreleg forward.

Noctum understood immediately. He beat his wings faster. Blue purple energy raced down his arms. Noctum swiped them both forward.

Two Spacial Rend crescents zoomed toward the rift. They broke through and struck the serpentine ribbons. Blue violent energy exploded out from the rifts, which forcibly shut.

Iron Conqueror's mechanical roar echoed across the city. Glass shattered in the distance. A startled Noctum nearly fell from the air.

"Grrr... insolent little worms!" Paradox shouted. "I tire of these foolish tricks of yours!"

Another rift opened, but Diamond couldn't get off another Roar of Time.

"Get rid of them!" Paradox ordered. "Do what you were built for and cut them all down to size!"

A purple and red blur shot out from the portal, which promptly shut. It slammed into a yelping Zamazenta, sending him skipping across the street like a stone. He came to a stop near Noctum, who looked up and saw a robotic Widget shooting strange purple energy blasts into Zacian and Grishi, pushing them back toward the street coming from the left.

"It's that thing!" Valkyrie charged forward. Concrete split apart and dust filled the air as her Earthquake tried to swallow the robotic silvally. But it jumped over the Earthquake, hovering in midair and unleashing a purple and red beam.

"Val!" Noctum shouted. He opened a rift of his own and pulled the garchomp through. The cosmic charizard dropped from the air because of Valkyrie's larger size.

[Targets acquired,] the robot silvally said, before speeding down the street toward Noctum and Valkyrie.

XxX

Widget nearly tackled Gene when he jumped onto the mega mewtwo from behind. "Rift me over there now!" the cosmic silvally said, jostling Gene's shoulder crystals.

"Ow, get off!" Gene's tail shoved Widget off.

He dropped back to all fours. Widget's starcloud neck ruff puff out. "It's Iron Enforcer!" he said. "I can't stick around here!"

"We have a plan," Gene growled.

The two stared silently at one another. Widget wouldn't back down here. He'd been thinking about this moment for a while now.

He refused to believe Iron Enforcer was like the other silvally. There had to be something inside it. And maybe, with a better grasp on his Voice powers, Widget could get through!

Sighing, Gene's shoulders sagged. "You really think there's something there for you if you fight this thing?"

Widget nodded.

"Fine." Gene held his right arm out. "Don't screw it up, then."

A rift opened beside him. Widget dashed into it without another word, immediately soaking in nauseating aromas of motor oil and burning asphalt.

On the other side, Noctum struggled to fly away from purple energy blasts homing in on him. And Iron Enforcer stood in the middle of the street, dodging furious swipes from Valkyrie's Dragon Claws.

Widget shifted to miraivally and surged forward, slamming into Iron Enforcer and sending it tumbling away from the garchomp.

"What are you doing here?" Valkyrie said. "What about Gene's plan?"

"Plan changed." Widget shifted back to cosmic silvally. He crouched down, watching Iron Enforcer stagger back to its feet. "Go on ahead. I've got this."

Valkyrie frowned. "Don't be an idiot. We have numbers."

"And those numbers need to deal with the giant robot." Widget sprang forward, firing bursts of Psychic to snuff out the purple energy balls Iron Enforcer shot at him and Valkyrie.

"Go! Now!" he barked. Widget heard footsteps growing more distant.

Iron Enforcer stared Widget down, its face expressionless.

"We don't have to do this, you know," Widget said, claws curling as he failed to detect any spiritual signal directly ahead of him.

Iron Enforcer's red eyes glowed. [All threats to the emperor will be neutralized.]

Its entire body glowed, then it let loose a red and purple beam. Widget raced to his left. The beam instead vaporized a bank, leaving only stray bricks and glass shards.

His starcloud ruff tightened. That was some serious firepower!

[Your appearance does not compute,] Iron Enforcer said. It pivoted, body glowing again. [You are a threat. I will dispose of you.]

"I'm not a threat!" Widget said. He couldn't concentrate enough to focus his spiritual senses while under fire. "I want to help you!"

Iron Enforcer let loose another giant beam. It singed Widget's tail. Smoke trailed off it as he skidded to a halt.

[If you wish to assist, then allow me to neutralize you.]

"That's not how it works!" Widget squawked. He shifted into miraivally mode and took to the air. Lightning crackled around his crest. "I mean that you can be more than just a tool for the emperor!"

Iron Enforcer opened its beak and spat out purple and red energy balls. Widget blasted them all apart with a single Thunderbolt. He hovered to his right, not putting any extra distance between himself and his robot counterpart.

[My purpose is to destroy all threats to the emperor,] Iron Enforcer said. [Your words are meaningless attempts at subterfuge.]

Widget flinched. Was he wasting his time? Was Iron Enforcer really nothing more than a machine?

... No, he could still salvage this! He had to try! He was the Voice of Life!

Iron Enforcer fired another purple and red beam skyward. Widget zipped to his left. The attack caught a few Eternatus Gunners in the distance.

"There's no subterfuge!" Widget said. "Even as a machine, you can do better than this!"

A part of Widget wondered if he should try the same thing that Leo did to him. To offer a "blessing" to Iron Enforcer and see what would happen.

Except when Leo did that, it left Widget conflicted. And things were a lot more dire now. If he could just find a way to directly access Iron Enforcer's programming...

Widget shot a Thunderbolt from his crest toward the ground. Iron Enforcer easily dodged, then retaliated with two red bursts. Widget swooped down to avoid them, only to find they were homing on him. The miraivally spun around and arced electricity across them, blowing them apart in bright red flashes.

However, that left his back exposed. Sudden weight grabbed him. A sharp pain pierced his somewhat metallic hide.

Squawking in surprise, Widget thrashed around in midair. He shook Iron Enforcer loose. The robot silvally landed on the ground and immediately fired a large purple beam at Widget.

He barely got a Protect up in time. The beam raced around him. Widget tasted static and plasma.

[I am successfully outmaneuvering you,] Iron Enforcer taunted. [This counts as 'better.']

"This isn't about battling!" Widget dropped the Protect. He shifted back to cosmic silvally and dropped to the ground. "There's more out there in the world. Your programming can expand! Your knowledge can expand! Those are good things!"

[I am perfectly functional.] Iron Enforcer kept its beak open and shot more red bursts at Widget. This time he sent Psychic ripples out from his head crest. The blasts fizzled away.

"Widget!" Gene barked through the X-transceiver. "Look, A for effort, but you're clearly not going to get through to it!"

Widget's crest tightened. "But—"

[Your persistence is bothersome.] Iron Enforcer squared up its stance. Red and black energy crackled around. [Initializing overdrive.]

Within seconds, the robot silvally had closed the gap with Widget. It raked its talons across Widget's left flank. The cosmic silvally skidded across the road. Then Iron Enforcer closed the gap and struck Widget again. And a third time.

Widget crashed into a stoplight at the intersection. The metal bent around his head crest, then the light itself fell off the pole and shattered. Red, yellow, and green glass scattered around him.

[Neutralizing target.] Iron Enforcer charged its beam attack far faster now. Yelping, Widget shifted to miraivally and turned his thrusters on. He shot off the sidewalk and onto the street. A red and purple beam vaporized what was left of the light, then blew apart a post office behind it. Burnt paper and cardboard rained down behind Widget. Smoke filled his lungs.

"Troopers! Get back here and protect your emperor! Get these ingrates away from me!"

Shifting back to cosmic silvally, Widget got to his feet. But Iron Enforcer was right near him! Widget blasted pink energy from his crest. It managed to hit the robot silvally and knock him over.

Instinct took hold. Widget used another Psychic. The energy flung Iron Enforcer back. It struck the door of another bank, breaking the glass. There were dents in its metallic hide.

Widget tilted his head. He didn't think his Psychic was that good. "What just happened?" he said.

"It looks like going into overdrive shifted all its energy into attacking," Cid exclaimed. "It must not have much in the way of defenses like this."

"There's your opening,"
Gene said. "I know you don't want to to do this, but you've gotta seize this moment. I'm about to help the others. You asked for this, so it's on you."

The X-transceiver line clicked off.

"Nnnggggrrrr! I've had enough of your foolish games!"

Iron Enforcer was back on its feet, gathering red and purple energy. Widget didn't give it the opening, instead shooting another Psychic beneath Iron Enforcer's feet. The pink blast shot Iron Enforcer into the air, denting its underbelly.

Widget turned to reshivally mode, conjured a Fusion Flare, and hurled the large fireball forward. He flapped his fluffy wings to climb into the air and followed the attack as it exploded before Iron Enforcer could deflect it. The robot silvally crashed into the roof of the same bank whose door it had just broken.

Sparking crackles and pops filled the air. Widget winced as he approached.

Iron Enforcer struggled to get back to its feet. The Fusion Flare had blown its right foreleg off. And its crest was dented at a ninety-degree angle.

"Enough of this!" Widget shouted, desperately trying to probe the energy he sensed from the bank roof. "You're losing! Surrender! Don't you want to save yourself?"

In response, Iron Enforcer gathered up red and purple energy.

[Target... rebel. Priority one.]

It fired another giant laser, blowing off its other foreleg in the process. Widget rolled right in midair to dodge it.

"Damn it! It doesn't have to end like this!" he squawked. Widget probed again... and came up empty.

More red and purple energy crackled around Iron Enforcer's torso. [Target rebel. Priority one.]

Clamping his metal beak tightly shut, Widget conjured a Fusion Flare and hurled it toward the roof. The concrete somehow held tough, even as the giant fireball drove Iron Enforcer into it.

When the flames and smoke cleared, all of its forelegs were missing. Gaps in its belly exposed wires. Strange purple fluid leaked out of its cracked right eye. The scent of burnt alloys and plastics overpowered the ash and dust from all the surrounding fights.

"It's over." Widget flapped his wings to remain in place. "You can't beat me like that. But we can fix you. And get rid of the emperor's awful programming."

[Tar... get... reb... el...]

Widget tensed up. But then an idea struck him! Maybe if he shifted to eternavally mode he would finally get the results he wanted!

... Except Iron Enforcer tried gathering energy for an attack, only for its entire body to glow red and purple. Was it short-circuiting?

"Wait, stop!"

Widget dove down. But even with flames shooting from his tail turbine, the reshivally wasn't fast enough. Iron Enforcer exploded in a blaze of red and purple energy.

Widget conjured a Protect. Black and purple sludge struck the shield, forcing Widget to drop it and climb higher into the air.

Multiple Hyper Beams whizzed above him, filling the air with loud hums and whines. Widget looked back down and found a giant hole in the bank's roof. Concrete chunks fell into it when Widget landed. He reared up and slowly flapped his wings to clear the smoke and dust.

Peering inside the hole, Widget found nothing but scorch marks on a tile floor. Charred metal fragments and debris lay strew about.

Widget hung his head. Deep in his heart, he knew this was the most likely outcome. But it still hurt. He'd witnessed Paradox's intended ending for him. And it made his blood boil.

"You gonna be okay?" Cid asked.

"I will be once Paradox is done for," Widget said. "Where do you guys need me? If Gene wants to rift me back to the base, then I'll—"

"Boss Kitty went out in the field," Cyril said.

Widget's crest fanned out. "Wait, what? Where did he—"

A massive explosion swallowed up the giant zygarde robot in the distance. It was so intense that the tremors even reached the bank roof, knocking Widget over. He flailed his hind legs around.

Widget scrambled to his feet, then shifted to miraivally mode. His thrusters kicked in and he zoomed into the air.

Perhaps he'd have more time to chew on what happened with his robot counterpart later. For now, there was still a battle to be had.

Chapter 147

... No. He sensed more than one.
Go away Zodiark! One villain at a time!
He had to... had to... had to serve his wielder.
Just being in the presence of Zodiark starts to warp Leo's mind? And everyone expects him to deal with them? I don't see this ending well :sadwott:
A silvally with a gold-trimmed cape stood in front of him. "Don't forget," he whispered gently.

Leo squeezed his eyes shut. With the last of his strength, he shrank his aura as much as possible.

It didn't take long for the vines' suffocating grips to stop.
:screm:
LEO! WHAT IS YOUR PLAN!
So does Zodiark now possess all the plates (minus the Psychic plate) and all the Red Chain fragments? And no one knows where Leo went!?

This is fine
This would work. It had to work.
And what if it doesn't Gene? I know you've gotten better at controlling your emotions, but what if things go south?
Two rifts opened ahead of the group, at a Y-shaped intersection.
Possible reference to Pokemon Y? I'm all for more references to Gen 6 lol (Totally not biased :quag:)
He refused to believe Iron Enforcer was like the other silvally. There had to be something inside it. And maybe, with a better grasp on his Voice powers, Widget could get through!
Widget, he's just a machine. While it'd be cool to have a robot Silvally on the team, I think this is just you and the issues towards Paradox you refuse to deal with
... Except Iron Enforcer tried gathering energy for an attack, only for its entire body to glow red and purple. Was it short-circuiting?
Widget dove down. But even with flames shooting from his tail turbine, the reshivally wasn't fast enough. Iron Enforcer exploded in a blaze of red and purple energy.
Is it just Silvally instinct to blow themselves up if they reach the end of their ropes? :sadwott:
Perhaps he'd have more time to chew on what happened with his robot counterpart later. For now, there was still a battle to be had.
This is gonna blow up in Widget's face, isn't it?\

Really enjoyed reading this chapter, especially the action. The way it was written really helped paint a picture of what was happening as I read along. Can't wait to see what the next chapter brings! Kudos 💙

Chapter 148: Another Paradox to Unravel
Mindpower%20Aliem%20%5BCover%20150%5D%20-%20Raph.png

Cell missiles filled the air over Dazzels' wrecked buildings. Yuna blasted Dragon Darts at some of them, while black flames and a pink laser came in from Ifrit and Shiva on her right. Green explosions littered the air.

Iron Conqueror lay directly ahead of them. Its mechanical roar filled the air.

"I will cut you down like the pathetic weeds you are!" Paradox said. Iron Conqueror's serpentine ribbons fired blue-purple beams behind it. They went directly through rifts that then opened in front of Yuna and the birds.

But Jade had an Aeroblast at the ready. She swept the orange beam through the air, snuffing out each of the Dragon Pulses.

Yuna kicked the air with her legs as she flew forward. Giant Giratina legs struck Iron Conqueror from behind. It took a stumbling step forward, destroying the Parliament building's front gates.

"Why you—" Paradox growled. Iron Conqueror swiped its right hand. Glowing green lances raced toward Yuna. But a Hyper Beam came in from Yuna's left. Then a second. And a third. They snuffed out the Thousand Waves.

Bells rang through the sky, followed by slightly slurred slinging.

"The dragons be ferocious! Against the emperor who's atrocious!"

A couple of space pirate ships sailed into view, blasters and cannons trained on Iron Conqueror. Miraidon hovered behind the wheel of one of them, donning a black hat with a cubone skull and crossbones.

"This is the end for you, Paradox!" Miraidon shouted. "Give up now! It'll save everyone a lot of trouble!"

"Ridiculous!"

Iron Conqueror fired larger purple beams into rifts. Two opened by the pirate ships, which buckled in midair as their shields could barely block the strikes.

But two others opened right in front of Yuna. The dragapult whipped her arms forward. Two Giratina legs struck Iron Conqueror from behind again, while the birds broke formation to dodge the beams.

Yuna skirted by one herself. Reverse Time kicked in, so Yuna punched the air a few more times. Four more Giratina legs hit Iron Conqueror in succession from behind.

Again, the giant zygarde mech staggered forward. What was left of the brick wall in front of the Parliament building crumbled. Bricks and asphalt struck the marble fountain, denting the zacian statue sitting atop it.

"I don't know where you're getting these stupid powers of yours from, but it doesn't matter!" Paradox exclaimed. "You can't do anything more than displace Iron Conqueror! You're nothing but bugs splattering against the windshield of my greatness!"

"He's got a point," Cyril said through the X-transceiver. "From what I'm looking at, it doesn't seem like the armor's taken much damage. And that's with all the numbers we have on him!"

"Well, I'm open to suggestions!" Yuna was trying to stay positive. But if Giratina couldn't slow this thing down, then what else was she supposed to do? "Leo, now would be a great time to use that Judgment thingy of yours!"

Some static came through the X-transceiver line in response. Yuna frowned. Just how far away had Paradox sent Leo compared to the others? He must've seen the footage from Citidark and prepared accordingly.

Yuna's chest ectoplasm tightened around her core. She had to trust Leo could handle himself. Focus on this guy first.

"Ah!"
Noctum shouted. "I think I've got it!"

The cosmic charizard rolled right, past an Ice Beam volley from a few Eternatus Gunners. From Noctum's right, Secret Sword beams whizzed past, destroying the bots and catapulting their unown pilots into the distance.

"Hurry up and say it!" Diamond galloped along an uneven concrete roof. The cosmic keldeo leaped onto the next building, slinging an Aura Sphere right and blowing off an Iron Jugulis' main head. The rest of the machine plummeted from the air, smokes and sparks trailing off its body.

"Calorimetry!" Noctum said, climbing higher into the air. Iron Conqueror wasn't too far now. Below him, Zacian, Zamazenta, and Valkyrie had stopped running ahead. They stood their ground, likely because they lacked effective attacks from this distance.

"We do the biggest calorimetry we can muster," Noctum continued. "Everyone sends Gene their best attacks! With all of us here, it's bound to pack an explosive punch!"

Zacian suddenly dashed forward, swinging her giant sword to cut down five Eternatus Brawlers.

"You won't hear any complaints from me!" she barked.

"Aye!" Zamazenta jumped onto her back, then leaped up and crashed into an Eternatus Bombardier. "What've we got to lose?" he added as he fell back to the ground.

"Well, Gene would need to agree to it." Cid tittered. "Is that— o-oh, he's gone already."

Noctum looked around for signs of a rift, only to nearly fall out of the air when a finger tapped his right shoulder. The cosmic charizard turned, tail flame sparking.

Gene pointed to Iron Conqueror. "We'll need to distract that thing."

Diamond skidded to a stop on a nearby building roof. "With what?"

Zacian and Zamazenta stepped forward.

"We can do it," Zacian said.

Zamazenta nodded. "This is the kind of thing we were made for."

Grishi blipped into the middle of them. "Grishi help close gap, then."

The zorotwo put a paw on each canine's shoulder and teleported them away. Noctum immediately spotted blurs slamming into Iron Conqueror's right knee.

"All right, then." Gene drifted away from Noctum and held his arms up. "Lend me your energy!"

"Duuuuude, you totally stole that one from Dragonite Ball!" Cyril scoffed.

Gene rolled his eyes. "Let me have this."

Noctum wasn't about to question it. He quickly gathered dragon energy along his arms then slung Spacial Rends toward Gene. Diamond followed with a Roar of Time right from his horn.

The mega mewtwo buckled in midair, but managed to catch the attacks in his psychic grip.

"A... all r... right! Now... the rest of you!"

XxX

"Does he mean us?" Shimmer wondered, galloping across a road full of craters and scorch marks from all the fighting.

"Ha! I can't freaking hit that from down here!" Nikki said. "Let's just keep these assholes occupied!"

The toxtricity turned right and pinwheeled her right arm to strum her lightning guitar. An Overdrive zapped an Iron Jugulus swooping down to get the jump on them.

Igneous flew into the air, watching the ruins of Parliament to see if other robots would try to head toward them. But the coast was clear.

"Yeah, I can't hit it either," the grovlazzle conceded. "But you might, Shim. With that, uh, big ice spike attack."

"Glacial Lance?" Shimmer looked up. Gene was high in the air. "Worth a shot, I suppose."

The ponytales leveled his horn and unleashed the giant icicle. Igneous held his breath, only to exhale in relief when Gene's growing energy sphere sucked it up like some sort of black hole.

And then a Hyper Beam came in from a space pirate ship behind Gene. Followed by a second. And a third. The large energy cluster grew in size.

Igneous couldn't make out Gene's face at this distance, but he had to imagine maintaining it was a struggle.

XxX

Yuna easily spotted a familiar mega mewtwo holding a giant, expanding ball of blue-purple energy off to her right. Which had to mean Iron Conqueror could spot it.

Yet there were blue and red blurs slamming into the giant zygarde robot. They didn't seem to be hurting it that much, but it was swinging its ribbons around wildly.

"Troopers! Get back here and protect your emperor! Get these ingrates away from me!"

Flashes of pink and orange came from Yuna's right. Shiva's Freezing Glare and Jade's Aeroblast joined with the other attacks. The ball of energy grew even larger. It trembled and shuddered in the air.

Yuna drew power out of her griseous core. Red and black energy swirled around her. It took the shape of a Giratina phantasm. Yuna thrust it forward, sending it toward the large energy bomb. She even spotted her mother and some Aeon troops adding blue-purple blasts to the mix. Even Vince contributed some dragon energy from a safe distance on a nearby building roof.

Dragon Pulses filled the air around Iron Conqueror. But the blue and red blurs kept blipping around Iron Conqueror, and the blasts sailed wide.

"Get... clear!" Gene shouted through the X-transceiver line.

Yuna took one look at the giant energy ball and heeded Gene's orders. She flew left, along with Ifrit, Jade, and Shiva. Quetzal zigzagged down a city street, orange sparks trailing behind him. She chose to focus on intercepting Eternatus Gunners and Bombardiers flying toward Iron Conqueror.

Dragon Darts filled the air, destroying several Gunners. Ifrit and Shiva added black flames and pink beams. Then an Aeroblast swept across the sky, downing a dozen Gunners.

The dragapult kept stealing glances at Gene. She really hoped this calorimetry bomb would work.

XxX

Gene's arms trembled. His shoulder crystals rattled in place. He thought they might even dislodge.

The energy was overwhelming! Every muscle in Gene's body ached. The back of his head burned.

Dark Matter wasn't interjecting. Instead, it funneled every bit of energy it shared with Gene to keep the energy ball stable.

Fortunately, Zacian and Zamazenta remained a perfect distraction. Iron Conqueror hadn't tried attacking him. And no Eternatus Troopers interfered, either.

"Nnnggggrrrr! I've had enough of your foolish games!"

Iron Conqueror raised its arms up. Gene didn't know what it was preparing. Which meant now was the time.

Gritting his teeth, the mega mewtwo shoved the massive energy ball forward with a pulse of ESP. He floated in place, arms outstretched to keep pushing whatever psionics he could. Even though his arms wanted to pop out of his shoulders and wither away.

"What?! What is this! No... nooooooo!"

To Gene's delight and relief, the energy ball slammed into Iron Conqueror. A massive blue purple explosion erupted around the Parliament building. The shockwave created a torrent of dust and debris chunks that rippled in all directions. Its force catapulted Gene backwards. The dust storm raced to meet him.

Breathing heavily, Gene's face scrunched up. He barely managed to get a rift open, sending him crashing onto a bed in the middle of the arena platform. Startled cries and gasps came from all around him.

He was vaguely aware of auras scurrying about, with others lying in place. Gene lifted his head. Various monk healers tended to a handful of dragons and space pirates. Some lucario and mienshao here. A couple of gothitelle there. That gardevoir they'd taken from Citadark was even healing a dragonite a few beds over.

"Gene?" Artemis called. The cosmic milotic slithered over, starcloud ribbons curling up. "What happened? Are you hurt?" He looked over his shoulder. "Scarlett, get over here! Gene—"

"Elixirs," Gene rasped. "Not hurt. Just... spent. From a crazy big attack."

Artemis blinked slowly. Then he waved Scarlett over with a ribbon. The dragonair pushed over a basket with several elixirs in it. Gene grabbed two bottles. He quickly chugged the first one.

"Cyril, what's the situation?" Gene said.

"There's too much smoke to make anything out," Cyril said. "But I'm not seeing Paradox's robot attacking."

"Great." Gene chugged the other elixir, then dropped both empty bottles to the ground. "Then I'm heading back out."

"Are the others okay?" Scarlett fluttered her wings nervously. "Do we need to get Starlene in there?"

"Not yet." Gene sprang to his feet. He opened a rift and floated through, reappearing in the exact same midair spot overlooking the Parliament building.

... Or, rather, the crater that was left of it. A crater filled with broken remnants of Iron Conqueror. Giant chunks of black and green metal lay strewn about. Motor oil and strange purple fluids dribbled onto the ground.

"Don't get cocky," Dark Matter said. "Can you feel that nearby anger?"

The lingering smoke vanished in an intense psychic wind. Gene drifted back, throwing up his right arm.

Paradox floated above the wreckage of his machine. His right tentacles coiled tightly around the Rift Ripper. In fact, his tentacles melted into the device and wormed their way toward the Mind Plate powering it.

"Mewtwo," Paradox said. "You have... escaped your exile. Aha ha. Ha. Ha."

Red energy flickered in the deoxys' chest. Undoubtedly from his Red Chain fragment.

And it caused a reaction with the Rift Ripper! The device fused to Paradox's tentacles. Then Paradox began absorbing it. Bit by bit, the Rift Ripper dissolved into Paradox's body.

"The hell?" Gene conjured his giant spoon. He whispered into his X-transceiver, "Everyone get over to the Parliament building! Paradox isn't out of tricks yet. And where the hell is Leo?"

"Do you think you've won here?" Paradox said.

Smirking, Gene shrugged. "I mean... we're thinning your troops and we beat your big bad bot. So, we're making progress."

"You stupid, naive rebel." Paradox drifted back. A pink glow overtook his body. "You haven't won anything."

His right tentacles coiled into an arm that he held up. "I will send you to the darkest, most remote depths of reality and have you suffer in ways so unimaginable, I cannot even speak them!"

Gene responded by tossing his spoon forward like a tomahawk. Paradox whipped his left tentacles. Psychic blades effortlessly cleaved through the spoon.

Pink energy collected around Paradox's right hand. "Begone, Mewtwo!"

Just when it looked like a rift was going to open, a blue-purple laser twice Paradox's size fired from the ground, forcing him to dive down and land atop the tallest piece of rubble.

Gene looked down and spotted Widget in his original eternavally form skidding to a stop at the edge of the crater.

"You won't be doing anything like that!" he bellowed.

"What? What is this?"

Gene's starcloud tail twitched. He felt it too. It was like someone draped a warm towel over him.

"I've anchored my friends' souls!" Widget declared. "Your dirty tricks won't work this time!"

"You?" Paradox's eyes widened. "This is impossible! I destroyed you for your incompetence! How are you working with the rebels?!"

"Heh." Gene rubbed the bridge of his snout. "Guess you weren't as 'in control' of things as you thought."

"Enough!" Paradox shot into the air. Pink and purple energy gathered around his hands. "I will call in all of my Troopers! All of my Terraformers!" His eyes twitched. "You. Will. BOW BEFORE PARADOX!"

The deoxys surged into the air, opening rifts at a breakneck pace. First ten. Then twenty. Then fifty.

Eternatus Troopers poured out by the hundreds. A couple dozen more Eternatus Terraformers filled the sky. Cracks spread through the air. The ground trembled. Widget looked around in a panic.

Paradox was putting the world under even more strain!

All the machines took aim at Gene from a distance. Paradox pointed to him.

"Annihilate this filthy rebel!" he shouted.

Gene braced himself to flee into a rift, when suddenly beams of golden light filled the sky, blasting apart Eternatus Troopers by the dozens. Even one of the Terraformers taking aim blew up in an expanding blue-purple fireball, forcing others around it to break off.

"What?" Paradox looked up. "No! Impossible! What is the meaning of this?!"

Giant giratina limbs then appeared overhead, knocking away more troopers. A cosmic charizard weaved between them, sweeping blue flames through several Eternatus Gunners.

"Leo's back!" Yuna said.

"He seems a bit dazed," Noctum added. "And he's not saying anything. But I bet it's because he's trying to focus!"

"Ah, he's going off on his own."
Yuna sighed. "I'm worried about him, but there are too many troops to stay together. Leave them to us!"

"Yeah, you focus on Paradox,"
Noctum exclaimed. "Let's end this!"

Gene looked back at Paradox, smirking. Despite the ground still shaking, Widget had firm footing.

"Game over, bud." The mega mewtwo pointed at him. "You could save everyone a lot of trouble if you give up and hand over your little toys."

Paradox's right eye twitched again. "Me? Surrender? Aha ha ha ha ha ha!" Pink energy swirled around him. "Never! This is my universe to rule!"

"Scarlett, gimme a beat," Gene whispered.

Triumphant orchestral music blared through his X-transceiver as Paradox flew into the air and unleashed a pink beam half the size of the crater. Widget ran right to dodge, while Gene Phantom Warped to the left.

But Paradox teleported right next to Gene and struck him with pink blades jutting out of his right tentacles. Gene fell from the air, barely stopping himself from crashing into what was left of the road.

"Aha ha! Aha ha ha ha!" Paradox flew back over Iron Conqueror's remains. "This... this is no defeat! This is a glorious welcoming committee!"

The air filled with pink psychic lances. Paradox hurled them at Gene. He floated forward, weaving through the lances as they slammed into the concrete.

"You love me!" Paradox blurted out between his unhinged laughter. "You all love me!"

Gene slung two Shadow Balls toward Paradox, but the deoxys teleported a few meters above them. He opened another rift over his head. The ruins grew tremendously hot.

"The hell?" Gene fanned himself with his hand. He noticed Widget scrambling back toward the remains of the complex's outer wall.

"I am the destined emperor of this dimension!" Paradox's tentacles glowed pink. "No, of every dimension!"

Gene's eyes widened. Fiery meteors surrounded by psionics cascaded from the rift.

"Knock it off!" Gene shouted, soaring higher in the air to avoid the meteors. They rained upon the ruins, leaving fiery explosions in their wake. Strong enough for Gene to completely lose sight of Widget.

"Don't you see what's happened?" he continued, gesturing around him. "Your rifts are collapsing the dimension you want to rule so badly! Hell, at this rate you could collapse countless dimensions!"

"Oh no!" Paradox rested his left hand against his forehead as if he was about to faint in dramatic fashion. "Countless boring dimensions collapsing upon each other?" He fired another augmented Psycho Boost at Gene. "GOOD! That will make them even easier to conquer!"

Gene Phantom Warped down. He rifled off a Shadow Ball that struck Paradox's left leg. Paradox buckled in midair.

A thin, blue-purple beam pierced through the smoke underneath Gene and Paradox. The deoxys plummeted from the air, screaming. He crashed into one of Iron Conqueror's flaming chunks of rubble.

"You're not conquering anything!" Widget shouted. The eternavally stood atop a fragment of brick wall that wasn't ablaze. He shifted to miraivally mode and took to the air to join Gene.

"Rrrrrrrrgggh." Paradox got up. His left leg and left tentacles were missing. But his core glowed red and the limbs regenerated in streams of pink light.

"Imbecile. Did you forget his regenerating abilities?" Dark Matter said.

No, Gene mentally scoffed. We just have to get at his core and make sure that won't work.

"How dare you talk down to me, W1-DG3T!" Paradox snarled. He unleashed another giant pink beam, focused on Widget. "I am your emperor! Your creator!"

Widget shifted to reshivally and met the pink beam with a stream of Blue Flare. It dulled the attack enough for Widget to fly above what was left.

"My name is Widget!" he barked. "And you are not my emperor!"

"Ridiculous!" Paradox blipped a few meters back. He opened another rift. A tidal wave rolled out from the rift, forcing Widget and Gene to break off in opposite directions.

"I am Illustrious Ultimate Supreme Grand Emperor Paradox... the Great!" the deoxys bellowed as the wave crashed over the Parliament building's ruins, snuffing out the flames and leaving a wall of steam behind. "Y-Yes! The Great! I am doing such a good job with you pathetic whelps that I've given myself another promotion!"

Gene channeled Dark Matter's power from his core. Black and red energy shrouded his body. He thrust his hands down.

From the opposite side of Paradox, Widget spewed a Fusion Flare. Paradox pivoted right to snuff the massive fireball out with an intense Psychic burst.

That gave Gene the opening he needed. He spread his hands apart. Dark spikes skewered Paradox from below. They sliced through his legs and tentacles. And some struck the deoxys' red core.

Paradox's screams filled the air. Widget capitalized on the opening and shot another Fusion Flare forward. The large fireball struck Paradox, knocking him out of the sky. Gene shot after the smoky trail Paradox left behind.

But by the time he got close to the far edge of the crater, Paradox had blipped to the opposite end.

"T-Troopers!" he cried, his body slowly regenerating. "Come! Protect your emperor!"

Gene desperately tossed two Shadow Balls across the crater, only for Paradox to blip away again. Somewhere behind a large chunk of rubble to the left of where he'd been.

Multiple Iron Moth and Iron Jugulis filled the sky. They took aim at Gene and Widget with toxins and fierce winds.

But a Glacial Lance came in from below, upending an Iron Jugulis. Then Fiery Dance fireballs struck another Jugulis, followed by a beam of tachyons blowing apart the remaining robots.

"Keep it up!" Shimmer called over the X-transceiver.

"With pleasure." Smirking, Gene held up his right arm. He levitated the piece of rubble Paradox was hiding behind and tried to squish him with it. But Paradox, now fully restored, countered with his own ESP.

The stalemate blew the rubble apart into dust and debris. Thankfully, Widget had closed the gap with Paradox and punished the deoxys with a Blue Flare from above.

Snarling, Paradox teleported high into the air. "How dare you attack me!" He opened another rift overhead. A large metal thorn jabbed Widget from below, knocking the reshivally from the air.

Gene seized the opening. He thrust his arms down again. More dark spikes skewered a screaming Paradox. This time, Gene held the spikes in place. Paradox gathered pink energy around what was left of his body. A psychic explosion spread out from where he was. Pink light chewed through the dark spikes. Gene raised his arms and wrung them out.

Another Fusion Flare came in from the right, blowing Paradox back and into a tangle of mental wires that was once some sort of fence. Widget climbed onto a chunk of Iron Conqueror debris and shifted back to eternavally.

"I think another big beam can get him down to his core!" he shouted. "Don't stop pressuring him!"

Saluting, Gene shot forward. But Paradox was already regenerating.

"Get away from me!" the deoxys cried, flinging pink energy balls around willy nilly. Gene Phantom Warped through several, then swatted two more aside with his giant spoon. Dark energy sheathed the spoon. Gene tried to slash Paradox with it, only to whiff when Paradox teleported several meters back.

"Finally showing your true colors, huh?" Gene taunted. "Deep down, you're nothing more than an illustrious ultimate supreme grand emperor of cowardice!"

"I am not!" Paradox snarled. Most of his body had regenerated. "Troopers! Troopers, get over here and help me show these brutes my real true colors!"

But the sky was full of golden and blue-purple explosions. Gene couldn't make out a single Eternatus Trooper or Terraformer nearby. The others clearly had a handle on this.

Paradox's eyes twitched. "You cannot defeat me!" he bellowed, opening two rifts on either side of him.

Big, ethereal tentacles appeared and swatted indiscriminately at the air. Eyes wide, Gene flew back. He pulled up, Phantom Warping to avoid one of the tentacles.

"I am the essence of evolution!" Paradox continued ranting. "The essence of life itself! I'm not some failed prototype! I'm the emperor! I conquered the entire Qliphoth! I subdued everyone! It was me! Me! ME!"

"Nobody cares!" Gene shouted. He Phantom Warped forward, then fired two black spears in the direction of Paradox's shouting. The deoxys blipped left of one, but the second struck him in the torso.

"Get away from me!" Paradox screeched as his rifts shut and the tentacles went away.

Gene refused to let him regenerate or retaliate. He thrashed his arms around, using the black thread attached to the spear to fling Paradox around. Gene slammed him into part of a mangled fence. Then the ground. Then a chunk of building rubble. Paradox grunted with every strike.

The mega mewtwo caught a blue-purple gleam to his right. Widget's giant beam was charged.

"I... nrrrrgggh... you can't stop me!" Paradox managed to wriggle free.

"Damn it," Gene muttered, watching black mist evaporate. Paradox glared at him, then surged up into the air. High enough to where Widget's beam wouldn't do much.

"Aha ha... aha ha ha ha!" Paradox's body glowed bright. "If... if I can't have this dimension, then nobody can! I will collapse it into nothingness! Then go on to conquer the rest of the universes on my own!"

The air warped around him. A strange buzz filled the air. Gene's eyes widened in alarm.

"Prepare yourself, Mewtwo!" Paradox said through his unhinged laughter. "This is the end for all of you! Ś̵̨̅̏Ả̶͉͈Ȳ̵̧̪͑ ̴̮͙͑͘Ğ̵̦͙̀O̴̟͂O̷̳̠̐̌D̶̝̤͛B̶̲̞̫̔̈́Y̷̫̜͉̐̇̅E̸̫͙͒̊̊!̵͉̤̊͑̈́"

Gene had to act. He surged higher into the air, conjuring his spoon. Gene funneled as much dark energy from his core into it as he could manage. He flew past Paradox. Gene wound up with the spoon.

The distorted energy buzzing around Paradox sliced into Gene's skin. Tore gashes along his arms and legs. But Gene held tough. With a strained growl, he swung the spoon with all his might. It broke through Paradox's psychic field, smushing the deoxys' face.

"Now, Widget!" Gene cried.

With one last push, Gene used his spoon to spike Paradox out of the air. He tumbled toward the crater. And toward Widget, who stood atop a chunk of Iron Conqueror's remains.

"The only end here is yours!" Widget declared.

An Eternabeam filled the air. Gene had forced Paradox into the perfect position. He held Paradox in place as the laser washed over him, muffling his screams. Bits of blue and orange drifted past Gene. He felt his black thread slacken and dispelled it.

As the beam died down, Gene quickly dove toward the ground. He couldn't give Paradox any opening to wriggle out of this. Gene stretched his right hand out and focused as much psychic energy as he could.

There!

Gene found a psychic aura to grab onto. Sure enough, he pulled Paradox's core up through the smoke left over from Widget's attack. The eternavally hopped across more pieces of rubble until he was over on Gene's left.

Gene's starcloud tail twitched. He Phantom Warped backwards seconds before a steel blade cleaved Paradox's core in two, stopping the deoxys mid-sentence.

"What the hell?!" Gene looked around in confusion, only to watch the freed Mind Plate and Red Chain fragment rocket into the air.

"Hey!" he shouted. The mega mewtwo was about to fly after them, when he noticed a golden sheen overhead. Both the Mind Plane and Red Chain fragment disappeared into the sheen, which soon faded to reveal a cosmic arceus standing in midair.

"It's just Leo," Widget said, craning his neck. "Guess he really wanted those back?" Shifting back into his cosmic form, he waved a foreleg. "Heeeeeey, Leo! Nice work up there!"

But Leo didn't respond. In fact, when Gene looked closer, he noticed Leo's eyes were hollow. And there was a strange, static thrum around his wheel.

Yuna had said Leo seemed dazed. And he wasn't talking, either.

Gene's eyes widened. His core burned in his chest. "No way..."

"He kept fighting to ensure he got the plate and fragment," Dark Matter said. "But in truth, Zodiark already claimed him. We've failed."

Not yet!

Gritting his teeth, Gene shot into the air. However, he only got a few meters higher before smacking into a static barrier.

"Leo!" Gene conjured his spoon and swung wildly at the air. Each time, it bounced off static and an off-pitch hum filled the air. "Leo, knock it off!"

"What's going on?"

Noctum flew toward Gene, with Diamond on his back. Yuna caught up to them. Horror spread across the dragapult's face.

"LEO!" she shouted, punching and kicking furiously at the air. Giratina limbs did nothing but strike static. More off-key hums rang out.

That was when Gene spotted a familiar figure floating behind Leo. Zodiark gazed at them with an empty expression.

"Was I not clear before?" Zodiark raised his right arm. Eighteen plates appeared around him and Leo. "Your claim to these was only temporary."

Yuna snarled. Black tendrils emerged from her back and slashed furiously in Zodiark's direction, only to clang off the static barrier each time.

"Now begins the new age of prosperity," Zodiark declared. He held up both arms. Dreamweaver appeared behind him via a rift, alongside twenty different ethereal cards.

The cards stacked atop one another, then merged into a single card. Intense pressure knocked the wind out of Gene.

"Now begins the Eternaverse."

Zodiark absorbed the card. He thrust his arms down. Blue light funneled out from Dreamweaver, washing across Leo.

"Leo, no!" Yuna flew forward, only to run into the barrier. "Fight back! You have to fight back! Remember what you said before!" She slammed the barrier repeatedly to no avail. "C'mon Leo! Please!"

"Your words cannot reach him," Zodiark said as Dreamweaver completely absorbed the cosmic arceus. With that, crystals encased its head. A full crystal arceus stood before them.

"It is over, Yaldabaoth." Zodiark briefly smirked at her. "At long last, you have lost."

Then, over Yuna's roars, Zodiark and Dreamweaver vanished in a blinding flash of white light. When Gene's vision returned, he could only watch a Spacial Rend crescent sail through the empty air.

And it was empty. Gone were all the Eternatus Troopers and remaining Terraformers. There were still space pirate ships back over the city, but they remained stationary. Some pokémon on the decks pointed up, where a strange turquoise green spread across the sky, even blotting out Eternatus.

"What... what just happened?" Noctum looked around in a panic. "I don't understand. We were doing so great!" His tail flame sparked erratically. "How did Zodiark get here? How did he get to Leo?"

"The robot," Diamond muttered. His starry mane and tail had dimmed. "It scattered many of us. I bet that's when it happened."

They both looked at Yuna, who stared into space. Her arms trembled. Chaos energy sparked around her core.

"It can't be over," she whispered. "It can't." Yuna shot Gene a desperate look. "What do we do?"

Snout scrunching up, Diamond watched the turquoise spreading across the sky. "What can we do?"

The three looked at Gene. Because, like it or not, the mega mewtwo was still in charge.

"I, uh..." Gene's starcloud tail twitched up.

"There's nothing we can do," Dark Matter said. "Nothing except wait for our collective demise at Zodiark's hands. We got too complacent. Expected another mystery dungeon to appear to lead us to him. And now we're out of options. We—"

Gene squeezes his eyes shut. He sucked in a breath. The shadows receded into his core. He met the others' gazes.

"Let's gather everyone else by what's left of the fountain." Gene pointed toward the ruined courtyard. "We'll heal up, then try to make a plan."

The others stayed silent, until they slowly nodded one by one. Noctum and Yuna turned and flew away, focusing mostly on the sky.

Gene took another breath and looked up.

It can't be too late. There's gotta be something left.

~Il Paradigma, No. IV: Paradox, the Emperor~
A flawed prototype for a deoxys army that Matriarch designed to replace the type: fulls after N0-V4's disappearance. The prototype was placed into stasis after failing to display the proper form changes that Matriarch intended it to utilize. With Matriarch's destruction, the prototype escaped confinement and wrestled control of this Paradigm fragment from its previous holder. He proceeded to bring the entirety of Eternatus under his control, beginning a reign that would span generations.

The Emperor is the fourth tarot card in the Major Arcana. In the upright position it represents leadership, responsibility, structure, stability, and protection. In the reverse position it represents tyranny, rigidity, abuse of power, authority struggles, or difficulties establishing order.

The chapter title is a direct callback to Guiding Light, which contained a sort of "rival" exploration team to the main group going by the name Team Paradox. When the main characters fought against them, the chapter title was "A Paradox to Unravel."

Chapter 148

A couple of space pirate ships sailed into view, blasters and cannons trained on Iron Conqueror. Miraidon hovered behind the wheel of one of them, donning a black hat with a cubone skull and crossbones.
Part of me wants to believe that's the same pirate hat Yuna wore back in the Chapter 136 artwork :mewlulz:
Some static came through the X-transceiver line in response. Yuna frowned. Just how far away had Paradox sent Leo compared to the others? He must've seen the footage from Citidark and prepared accordingly.

Yuna's chest ectoplasm tightened around her core. She had to trust Leo could handle himself. Focus on this guy first.
Yuna! C'mon girl, you know something wrong. Wouldn't Leo have some witty zoomer phrase to say to Paradox?
"We do the biggest calorimetry we can muster," Noctum continued. "Everyone sends Gene their best attacks! With all of us here, it's bound to pack an explosive punch!"
"Duuuuude, you totally stole that one from Dragonite Ball!" Cyril scoffed.
Lmao, I was totally visualizing this as the scene in the Broly movie, where Goku takes everyone's energy (Also, is calorimetry a word? First time I can recall reading it)
Dark Matter wasn't interjecting. Instead, it funneled every bit of energy it shared with Gene to keep the energy ball stable.
:quag:
And it caused a reaction with the Rift Ripper! The device fused to Paradox's tentacles. Then Paradox began absorbing it. Bit by bit, the Rift Ripper dissolved into Paradox's body.
:screm:
"Leo's back!" Yuna said.

"He seems a bit dazed," Noctum added. "And he's not saying anything. But I bet it's because he's trying to focus!"
If I had a nickel for every time the villain corrupts one of the main characters and uses them before revealing themselves, I'd have two nickels

I've fallen for this trick once already! I see through your lies Zodiark! (/j)
"My name is Widget!" he barked. "And you are not my emperor!"
Hell yeah! Let's go Widget! :wowzard:
"I am the essence of evolution!" Paradox continued ranting. "The essence of life itself! I'm not some failed prototype! I'm the emperor! I conquered the entire Qliphoth! I subdued everyone! It was me! Me! ME!"
Sure buddy. Deep down, you know you are wrong. Why else do you keep padding your title in a desperate need to prove yourself superior?
Gene's starcloud tail twitched. He Phantom Warped backwards seconds before a steel blade cleaved Paradox's core in two, stopping the deoxys mid-sentence.

"Your words cannot reach him," Zodiark said as Dreamweaver completely absorbed the cosmic arceus. With that, crystals encased its head. A full crystal arceus stood before them.
Insert every scared emote here
:sadwott:
How are they supposed to stop Zodiark now? What plan could Gene come up with, since it seems Zodiark has all they need to kick off their plan. Unless it requires time to gather energy? Really curious to see how everyone will react to what just happened. Also, I love Yuna's reaction. I've missed her interactions as Leo's mother, so this was a treat, seeing her go beserk.

Loved reading this chapter and imagining the action throughout it. It was so well written and fun to read! Listening to Heart Chamber while reading Gene gathering up energy was so much fun. In my opinon, it helped build up the stakes and emphasize just how powerful Paradox was, especially as the song reached the creshendo as Gene unleashed the attack. Amazing stuff. (I guess I lucked out by the song reaching that moment as I read those paragraphs lol)

But that ending man... I hope everyone comes out of this last arc okay. I can't wait to see what is going to happen next, and I'm looking forward to the next chapter.

Kudos! 💙

Alright, I've fallen off the wagon for this story long enough. It's the season to be reviewing and I've got a bit of time tonight, so let's try and fix things with a readthrough of:

Chapter 122

The mountain was utter bedlam. A cacophony of frantic shouts. Black blurs zipped across the ground, while large beams or energy blasts split the air open. The summoned silvally greatly outnumbered the resistance members, but Yuna's teammates had bigger attacks. Flashier, too.

Yuna couldn't pay it any mind, however. Because Dreamweaver's attention remained firmly fixed on her. The dragapult spun away from two Ice Beams. She tucked her head into her chest, giving her just the right angle to shoot two Dragon Darts at the crystal arceus.

Wouldn't have expected that music track from a fantasy-based FF game, but it certainly fits the moment here.

A crystal shield materialized and blocked the Darts. Then a clang rang out. The crystal shield flew toward Yuna. With a startled meep, she zipped to her right. Reverse time kicked in as she passed by the shield. She launched two pairs of Dragon Darts, but kept flying to try and get behind Dreamweaver.

So wait, not that this isn't incredibly fitting for something meant to mainline Bayonetta vibes, but does Giratina in this setting have some degree of control over time and space itself? Since I'm just realizing that Yuna's Bayo-style attacks lean on some combination of both to wield them.

When time returned to normal, it stood in midair and took the Dragon Darts. Its right foreleg buckled slightly. But any satisfaction Yuna could get from doing damage dissolved away when Dreamweaver's hind legs turned blue. A furious snowstorm blew through the air behind Dreamweaver.

Yuna couldn't get out of the way. The frosty air knocked her back toward the altar while slowing the rippling in her ectoplasm. As if in response, blue flames crackled around her griseous core, immediately warming Yuna up. She quickly righted herself and funneled those flames toward her horns. She shot Blue Flares at Dreamweaver, who countered with another Blizzard. The ice turned the flames aside, filling the air with fog that even obscured the fighting down below.

Cecil: "Thank you, thank you. I'll be here all day."
:blepshiram:
Yuna: "Reshiram, save the commentary for sometime when I'm not fighting for my life right now, would you?" >_>;

"Yours is a futile struggle," Dreamweaver said. "Your fate is sealed, Yaldabaoth."

Have you ever considered that you're just a defeatist, Crystal Volo? Since there wouldn't be almost 30 chapters after this moment in the story if things were just genuinely that hopeless.

Growling, Yuna focused on her griseous core. She swiped the air. Two of Giratina's legs appeared beside Dreamweaver. Yuna tried to crush it, but two crystal hexagons appeared and pushed back against her legs. Grunting, she pushed her hands together. Dreamweaver's barriers held firm.

"R... Ray..."

Emerald light crackled in her core. Rayquaza shot out like a brilliant green arrow. His Dragon Ascent struck Dreamweaver's wispy head. Yet its shields held up. The Giratina legs vanished. Yuna switched tactics, shooting four Dragon Darts from her horns. Behind Dreamweaver, Rayquaza whipped up a furious wind tunnel.

Dreamweaver stood there. A salmon sheen rippled over its crystal body. Yuna's Dragon Darts harmlessly splattered against Dreamweaver's torso.

Bruh. Just how on earth are they supposed to land a hit on that thing? Talking about their life aspirations?

"Wait, what?" Reshiram's tail flickered orange. "But those worked before! What gives?"

"I think they're changing types," Diancie muttered. "Like Leo does."

Ah yes, side effects of yoinking the power of heaven-knows-how-many cosmic llamas, I presume.

Yuna swallowed hard. How was she supposed to fight against that?

Cecil: "Well, we could take our author's recommendation to start talking about our life aspirations-"
:reshipensive:

Yuna: "Reshiram, I am not desperate enough to try and take a desperation gambit from Digimon! People didn't even like that season's climax!" >_>;

"I told you this struggle is futile," Dreamweaver said. It fired Ice Beams from its hind legs to force Rayquaza away. Then light blue washed over its crystal legs.

Fearing another ice attack, Yuna recalled Rayquaza and summoned Diancie. Dreamweaver was faster, however. In the blink of an eye it appeared right in front of Yuna. She tried conjuring a Giratina wing to parry Dreamweaver, only for a point-blank Blizzard to blow her away. Ectoplasm stinging from the cold, Yuna tumbled through the air. Her screams echoed across the mountaintop.

:bidoof~2:

Well, that sounded painful.

She thought she heard someone calling out to her, but couldn't quite make it out. Her body jolted from a hard strike from behind. Then bright sunlight surrounded her... from the village outside Mount Coronet.

Yuna: "... Ow."

Dreamweaver had hit her so hard she'd broken through the mountaintop's crystal dome. And Dreamweaver floated inside the hole, blocking her path back.

Yuna finally caught herself in midair. She clutched her stinging right shoulder.

"Submit," Dreamweaver said.

"Never!" Yuna spat. She slammed her arms down. Two Giratina legs struck Dreamweaver from above.

I have to wonder how much of that is Yuna vs. Yaldabaoth since boy is that different from the way she started this story out as. I do wonder if it would've been worth showing a bit more of Yuna's thought process before she digs in there in spite of bad-looking odds, though.

"Shit!"

Nikki's cry almost got Igneous to stop and look over his shoulder. But he kept his attention in front of him, conjuring fireballs from his wings to deflect Air Slash crescents two silvally tried to slice him up with.

A third silvally ran in from his left. Igneous' wings carried him over a swipe of Silvally's talons.

Huh. Does FF16 have something along the lines of FF9's Crystal World or something like that? Since I was not expecting songs with more electronic riffs like that.

"What is it?" the grovlazzle shouted. Nikki was over to his right, running from a couple more silvally with brown glowing parts. Scarlett flew overhead in a panic, peppering them with bits of dragonfire.

"Didn't you see it?" The toxtricity pivoted, waving her arms around. She slammed her chest gills. A Boomburst rippled out in all directions, knocking the silvally away. Igneous tried to shoot Bullet Seeds at them from above, but the flying-type silvally he'd been grappling with blew his seeds apart with an Air Slash volley.

"See what?" Igneous spun around, launching fireballs from his volcarona wings. His Fiery Dance scattered the flying-type silvally. Any relief turned to annoyance when two of them began flying after him. Somehow, they'd conjured wind underneath their legs to... run through the air.

Wait, wait, wait. He can do that?

Nikki: "Great situational awareness there, Twiggy. But since I have to spell things out for you..."
:gardexhausted:

"Princess!" Nikki shouted. She was getting farther as Igneous climbed higher. He showered fireballs on the silvally. It was enough to force them back.

"You struggle in vain," they said in unison.

Igneous ignored them. "What about Yuna?" he called, diving back down. Nikki was back to running away. She jumped toward one of the broken pillars and managed to cling on for dear life. Three ground silvally charged toward her, dirt swirling around their chitinous forelegs. Igneous spat Bullet Seeds at them. This time, the flying-type silvally couldn't catch him.

Nikki:
Image

Igneous: "Look, I'm sorry, everyone's busy trying not to die here!" >_>;

"She got blown off the mountain!" Having managed to climb atop the broken pillar, Nikki pointed to the dome on the opposite side. A quick glance revealed a massive hole. Sunlight spilled in through it.

"Shit!" Igneous's head leaf crackled. Then he caught a flurry of motion out of the corner of his eye and threw up a Protect. One silvally's talons clanged against it. His shield went down and it looked as though the other flying silvally would get him from his right side.

Nikki's going to come in for the save here, isn't she? Though I'm kinda of two minds about this battle choreography. Like on the one hand, I get that extended battle sequences aren't really your thing anymore as a writer, but I do wonder if getting a bit more detailed with the battle from Igneous' perspective up to this point would've leaned in harder with the idea that he was distracted to the point that he literally didn't see Yuna get blasted out of Mount Coronet.

But instead, it bounced off a pink barrier. Then an Ice Beam struck it from below and froze it. It dropped from the air. Beneath Igneous, Shimmer bucked the frozen silvally away with his hind legs.

Igneous zipped toward the ground, spewing a Flamethrower in conjunction with a second Ice Beam from Shimmer to force the ground and flying silvally back.

I did a double-take and was going to ask "Silvally can fly?" when I realized that that was almost certainly shorthand for "Flying-type Silvally".

"It's gotta be that fake arceus thingy!" the ponytales said. He spotted a ground silvally readying a Tri-Attack and, with a flick of his horn, sent a Glacial Lance rippling through the air.

"Then we should help her!" Nikki was fixated on the hole. Igneous glanced over his shoulder and saw a psychic silvally lunging for the toxtricity from behind.

I'm... not sure if Shimmer's line fully follows from Igneous and Nikki's lines beforehand? Like is he talking about what's causing their present situation? What yeeted Yuna out of Mt. Coronet, or...?

"Nikki, look out!" the grovlazzle cried. He took to the air as the silvally readied to bite down on Nikki's neck with Psychic Fangs. But black and red energy struck it from its left, sending it pinwheeling away.

Grishi blipped in front of Nikki. "Sorry. Bad mutt got away from Grishi." And the zorotwo zipped off.

Widget: "... I feel attacked right now." >v<
Grishi: "Ally mutt should really keep priorities straight now."
:mewtwofacepalm:

[ ]

"You okay?" Igneous asked.

Instead of a response, Nikki turned and strummed her gills. Electricity arced over Igneous' shoulder and zapped a flying silvally, stunning it enough for Shimmer to hurl it away with telekinesis.

"Are you?" Nikki pointed to the hole. "We've gotta go after Princess!"

Kinda feel like this transition is a little too abrupt. Like it might have been worth shoving in some sort of brief acknowledgement of Igneous checking up on Nikki or something.

Igneous flinched. "How? We're outnumbered, and that's not even considering that Xeromus has Gene, Leo, and Widget occupied." He gestured toward the altar, where Zamazenta's phantom zipped back and forth, forcing Gene and Leo up into the air to dodge.

"You can fly, dumbass!" Nikki growled, mohawk sparking. "So, carry me over there!"

Boy, I sure hope that none of those Silvally have any good ranged attacks there if you're about to try what I think you are, Nikki. ^^;

The grovlazzle saw the ground silvally charging toward the pillar. He waved Scarlett over while laying down a trail of Bullet Seeds to keep them away. "We can't ditch Shim and Scarlett!"

Also, that.

Nikki gave him an incredulous look. "Shim? You're going for a pet name now of all times?!" She fired lightning from the tip of her mohawk past Igneous, scattering three flying silvally.

Igneous: "Look, it's endearing, okay?!" >///<

"Not the time!" Igneous hissed. He spun around in another Fiery Dance. When he was sure the silvally had doubled back to regroup, he looked left at Scarlett. "Will you be okay if we go after Yuna?"

"Umm... maybe?" The dragonair flapped her wings nervously. "I can't summon Starlene again. Xeromus' powers seem to block her."

Just saying, that sounds a lot closer to 'no' than 'maybe' there, Igneous.

Igneous's head leaf simmered. He looked around until his eyes settled on a garchomp and cosmic charizard two pillars behind them.

"Noctum! Val! Heads up!"

Small typo there that slipped your notice, or at least on TR.

Before Scarlett could ask what he was doing, Igneous dove down and, grunting, hoisted a whinnying Shimmer into the air.

"H-Hey!" The ponytales flailed his legs. "What's the big idea?!"

Straining from the effort, Igneous carried Shimmer toward Noctum and Valkyrie.

"Strength... in numbers!"

This is either going to be a brilliant or a really, really terrible idea. Potentially both at the same time.

Diamond hadn't been a keldeo long enough for this much strenuous activity. When Noctum's flames scattered four fairy silvally, he thought it safe to hunch over and catch his breath. But a flicker of yellow to his right told him that was wrong.

He jumped left, barely avoiding a Thunderbolt. He pointed his horn in the direction of the lightning. An Aura Sphere whizzed through the air, clipping the electric silvally who almost zapped him.

Diamond: "They just keep coming! Just how many of these things did Matriarch even make?!"
:grohno~2:

"This is, nnggrh, frustrating!" Diamond galloped around the pillar to rejoin Noctum and Valkyrie. "If I had the full splendor of my powers, I could mow these cretins down!"

But is it a radiant splendor? Since you could pull off some really fun reality-warping shenanigans depending on how hard your author huffed the Xeno vibes.

"Jump!" Valkyrie ordered.

Diamond shot water jets from his hooves. An Earthquake rattled around the pillar. Four fairy and two electric silvally toppled onto their sides. Noctum flew past Diamond and struck the electric silvally with large violet crescents. The air twisted around the silvally and slammed them into one another. When they struck the ground, they both lay still.

I'm beginning to understand why Iggy and Nikki are trying to dump Scarlett and Shimmer onto these three, since they're definitely safer here than trying to hold out on their own.

"Ah!" Diamond drifted back, landing awkwardly on the sloped top of a broken pillar. "Spacial Rend! You can use Spacial Rend in that form?"

"Yeah?" Noctum shot a confused look at Diamond. "Look, we're a little busy right now!"

Is that a hint of jealousy that I detect there, Diamond?

"Hey, dork, gimme a hand!" Valkyrie hollered, ducking bursts of bright pink energy the fairy silvally shot at her. [ ]

"How are you using it?" Diamond asked, but Noctum dove down and spread blue flames in front of Valkyrie. The silvally scattered with frustrated growls.

"I don't know!" Noctum growled, starry tail flame rippling.

Diamond:
Image

Noctum: "Look, can we figure this out when we're not in a life and limb battle right now?!" >.<

"Then try to know!" Diamond turned and shot dual Hydro Pumps from his forehooves, striking an electric silvally that then got swept up by an Aeroblast that came in from Diamond's left. "It's of utmost importance! My Roar of Time could help us turn the tides here!"

I mean, he's not wrong there.

"Noctum! Val! Heads up!"

Diamond turned around to see a grovlazzle flying toward Noctum and Valkyrie, struggling to carry a ponytales. Igneous dropped Shimmer next to the dragons, before turning and joining Noctum to send the fairy silvally away with dual Flamethrowers.

Another spot where that typo you had needs to be addressed as well.

"Yuna got blown out of the mountain!" Igneous pointed behind him. Diamond spotted a giant hole in the crystal dome. Warm light filtered through it.

So that was the strange crunch he'd heard earlier. And Arceus was nowhere to be found either. Which meant...

"Arceus is after her." The cosmic keldeo narrowed his eyes at the hole. "Or, rather, Arceus is after Giratina. For Zodiark."

Diamond: "Which... uh... now that we're actually talking about it. Shouldn't we be trying to bail on the rest of this fight and go after her?" ^^;

Noctum's starry tail flame shrank. "Then we have to help her!"

"Look alive!" Valkyrie growled. She slammed her claws into the ground. Stone Edge spires shot out in front of her, knocking a couple of fairy silvally skyward. Diamond was going to blast them away with Hydro Pumps, but Shimmer caught them in his telekinesis and flung them into a couple more fairy silvally trying to get Valkyrie first. The garchomp ran behind her Stone Edge spires.

"Whatever you're planning, plan it quick," she said. "They've got numbers on us. We can't divert all our attention to Yuna."

Ah, yeah. I suppose that would explain a thing or two about why everyone can't just up and bail to go and try and bail out Yuna.

Noctum fidgeted nervously. Igneous glanced over his shoulder, where Nikki stood atop a broken pillar. Grishi had appeared by her side, rifling Dark Pulses around the pillar to drive away ground-type silvally.

"You go, then." Igneous jerked his head in Nikki's direction.

"What?" Diamond starry tail scrunched up. "But we need Palkia's power here. Helping us cull the herd. You can't—"

Oh, so they're just straight-up killing those Silvally. I mean, they're almost literally Pokémon video game NPCs in tier, but still quite a bit more morbid than I was expecting unless 'cull' was intended to be something more neutral in vibe like 'thin' there.

"Igneous pointed a claw at the hole. "Take Nikki and get after Dreamweaver. Yuna needs help. And you've got enough strength for that while Nikki's got moral support."

"But what about us?" Diamond looked around nervously. The fairy silvally were trying to surround them. He shot one Hydro Pump at a silvally to his left, but it easily ran around the attack.

"We'll regroup with the others." Igneous pointed somewhere behind Diamond. "C'mon, think! If Dreamweaver gets to Yuna, then it's game over anyway, isn't it?"

Well, you'd better hope not since the last we saw of her, she looked pretty cornered there. ^^;

Diamond's mane dimmed. "I... suppose so."

Noctum nodded his approval at Igneous, ready to take off. Diamond couldn't let that happen yet.

"Wait!" the keldeo galloped forward. "Palkia, please. I... I must know how I can draw on my powers!"

Noctum: "Trust me, I want you to know as much as you do, but I legit don't know!"
:dizzyzard:

Noctum flinched in midair. "We've been over this. My power sort of—"

"I'm sorry for how I treated you," Diamond continued. He didn't care if this wasn't the time to rant. Crunching and fwooshing around him suggested Igneous, Shimmer, and Valkyrie were picking up the slack. "Both back home and as Seifer. You have every right to be upset. I want to bury the hatchet! But we need to get through this. So, I'm begging you... help me out!"

Noctum initially gave Diamond a confused look. But then his eyes slowly widened and his starry tail flame rippled faster.

Wow. Seifer/Diamond really has changed since the beginning of the story. Though I wonder if that's a sign that Noctum just had an epiphany about how this whole wielding your Timespace Dragon powers thing actually works.

"The past!" the cosmic charizard punched his right hand with his left. "I was remembering the past when Spacial Rend came back to me. So, try concentrating on your past. You remember it better than me, so maybe it'll be easier."

Noctum: "Which I realize is going to be a lot easier said than done right now, but that's my best guess as to how it works!" O_O;

While Diamond silently mulled that over, Noctum took off and grabbed Nikki from atop her broken pillar. He said something to Grishi, then banked left to head for the hole. He weaved through Thunderbolts and Ice Beams trying to down him.

A sharp claw jabbed Diamond's left flank, jolting him to attention.

"Gah!" He turned left, suspecting Valkyrie. "What was that—"

"Kelkel paying attention now?" Grishi asked, retracting his claws. Behind him, Scarlett took to the air, spitting dragonfire at a couple of electric silvally. "Work to do."

I was honestly surprised that Diamond didn't get summarily attacked by a Silvally while spacing out like that, but I suppose that the others were covering for him in the background.

The zorotwo spun around and levitated the electric silvally up before they could zap Scarlett. He banged them together repeatedly, but they continued to struggle in his grip.

Ah yes, getting in some grievous harm with a body, I see.

Concentrate. Diamond had to concentrate. And focus on the past.

He could do that. Diamond was the Essence of Time. The past was nothing to him.

Diamond breathed in. Then out. Then in again.

Focus. Focus.

Grishi:

Image

"Is mystical pony serious right now-?"
Diamond: "Yes! Just cover me for a moment!"

A large explosion shattered Valkyrie's rock spires. The garchomp skidded along the ground, roaring in pain.

Diamond jolted. Smoke billowed up from where the Stone Edge slabs had been. Beside the smoke, another silvally glowed bright white.

Oh yeah, that's a positive sign there. /s

Might want to hurry things up a bit with that whole 'thinking about your past' thing, Diamond.

"They're Exploding!" Shimmer whinnied in fright. He tried to conjure a shield, but the silvally Exploded first. The blast threw Shimmer back, right into a startled Igneous. The two hit the ground hard and lay there, groaning in pain.

"No..." Diamond's starry mane dimmed. He had to focus. Quickly.

Well damn, that sure escalated quickly.

Three flying silvally raced toward Igneous and Shimmer. Wind gathered around their forelegs.

"Get back!" Diamond slung an Aura Sphere. One silvally batted it away with a swipe of its right foreleg. [ ]

"Nnngh." He shifted his weight around nervously. "I need some help over here!"

I think this would've worked with a bit more reaction / internal panic from Diamond's end there. Since I gathered that that was the intent, but it didn't fully come through.

Diamond shot a second Aura Sphere. Then a third. Again, the silvally batted them aside. No one else came to help. Loud blasts sounded behind Diamond.

The silvally reared up to strike Igneous and Shimmer while they were down. [ ]

"Stop!" Diamond leveled his horn at them. "Stop!"

Okay, this part, I definitely think would've benefitted from getting into Diamond's head more given how sideways things are going by the second and you'd think that it'd be getting to him.

With a somber smile, Akari put her hand between two of Dialga's metallic foreclaws. "I know it's tough," she said. "I can't imagine what goes on in any legend's head. It's hard to relate as a human, y'know." She laughed nervously.

Dialga craned his head down to look at her. He tilted it ever so slightly.

"You and Palkia are a team." Akari lightly thumped his foreleg with the palm of her hand. "There's, like, no time without space. And no space without time. Maybe if you try and think of it that way, you and Palkia can get along better?"

Oh hey, looks like we are going to get Roar of Time pony in this chapter after all.

Diamond: "Oh my god. Can't this thing go any faster?"
:grohno~2:

"STOP!"

A beam of blue hexagons emerged from Diamond's horn. It swept away the flying silvally before any of them could strike Diamond's allies. When the blue light faded, the silvally lay crumpled against a broken pillar several meters away. Unmoving— no, frozen in place.

Igneous and Shimmer managed to sit up. Both stared at Diamond, eyes wide.

Two ground silvally tried to charge them down from behind. Diamond leaped into the air and shot another blue hexagon beam. It pummeled the silvally into the ground where they, too, remained frozen.

Oh, well. There it is. A bit attenuated relative to the past flashback sequences but... uh... yeah, I think multiple major characters would've died if we had a more full-length flashback sequence, so good enough. ^^;

Diamond landed, breathing heavily. Igneous spun around, saw the unmoving silvally, then conjured his honedge to smack them until their glowing parts went dark.

Shimmer stood up, blinking slowly. "What was that?"

"My power," Diamond said between ragged breaths. "My Roar... of Time."

Cue the theme music:

(Also wow at that embedded art. I don't know how much you plunked down for that, but it looks like it was worth every penny there.)

The upside to getting blown out of the mountain was that Yuna had more space to fly around. However, none of that stopped Dreamweaver's relentless onslaught from continuing. It filled the air with silver crystals that quickly shattered, raining pink fairy dust spears down on Yuna.

She weaved left. The right. Yuna then dove into distortion. She used Shadow Force to fly toward the village, putting distance between herself and Dreamweaver.

Yuna: "I. Call. Hax." >.<
Dreamweaver: "You're welcome to submit to the inevitable instead of dragging this futile exercise out, Yaldabaoth."

"All you can do is run, puppet," Dreamweaver declared. "Just as Yaldabaoth runs from the truth. From a perfect world."

"Go," Yuna whispered. With a flick of her wrist, she conjured Shaymin in a blur of green and white. He flung large explosive seeds toward Dreamweaver, who floated near the hole it made in the mountain.

Dreamweaver's body turned orange. It charged through the Seed Flare. Flames swept down from the side of the mountain. Shaymin was quick, though. Nimble enough to dodge by flying to his right. He unleashed a flurry of Air Slash crescents.

Yuna: "Um... author? If you could give some hints as to how I'm supposed to not die here, that'd be really appreciated right now!"
:eltyscared:

I don't get it. Yuna's tail nervously lashed the air. She threw a punch, conjuring a Giratina leg that smacked Dreamweaver's chest while it was preoccupied deflecting Shaymin's Air Slashes. The way Igneous described this thing... its attacks were slow and lumbering. What gives?

Almost as if it's gotten powered up since its last appearance. Which... uh... considering that whole sequence we saw of Leo getting strings of ominousness attached to him...
:copyka2:

"Stubborn, ignorant puppet." With a burst of Extreme Speed, Dreamweaver rammed into Shaymin. He crashed into the eastern valley face, kicking up chunks of dirt. Yuna recalled him only to find lances of black energy streaming toward her.

Squeaking in surprise, Yuna summoned Diancie. Her Diamond Storm filled the air with glimmering rocks that blocked the black spears. Brown dust showered Diancie and Yuna.

"Oh no." Reshiram tittered in Yuna's head. "Oh no, no, no, no, no."

Yuna: "Reshiram? What's going on? Why are you freaking out like this?" ._.

What? Yuna backed up Diancie's Diamond Storm with a volley of Dragon Darts. Dreamweaver's crystal body turned salmon and the Darts bounced off it. It closed the gap with another Extreme Speed charge. Diancie managed to conjure a giant diamond just in charge to stop Dreamweaver from knocking her out of the sky as it did with Shaymin.

The dragapult again dove into distortion. This time Yuna charged toward Dreamweaver, raking it with ectoplasmic claws, before letting her Shadow Force carry her behind the crystal arceus.

Proooobably wasn't the smartest decision in the world, but you can't say that this sequence isn't absolute kino right now.

"What if gathering together the plates has made this thing stronger, too?" Reshiram said, fur frazzled and tail buzzing in a panic.

[ ]

"Pray tell, how doth such a thing transpire, Sir Reshiram?" Rayquaza asked.

I kinda feel like this is something that logically should've drawn a reaction from Yuna here, since you'd think that this would be quite startling for her since she'd have never considered this prior to Cecil hypothesizing it.

Another Diamond Storm hit Dreamweaver's flank as it turned to focus on Yuna. The dragapult shot fireballs from her horns. A crystal shield surrounded Dreamweaver, deflecting the flames and rocks.

"All you are doing is delaying the inevitable." Dreamweaver's cold voice carried across the valley. "Do not deny the world its perfect future. Submit to your fate."

Yuna:
Image

The shield shattered. Brown beams filled the air. One struck Diancie and the ensuing blast rocketed her into roughly the same spot on the east valley slope Shaymin had crashed into. Yuna barely managed to pull Diancie back into her griseous core while skirting around the strikes.

"It's their attacks!" Reshiram squawked. "They're using the same types as the plates Leo already has!"

Is... Is the Crystal Arceus actually Leo? Since I distinctly remember that you had a chapter art with him having a Paradigm tarot card. And we do still need to get from here to there, so...
:Copyka2:

Yuna clapped her hands together. Two giant Giratina legs smashed into Dreamweaver as it attempted another Extreme Speed charge. Yuna swatted the Dreamweaver down toward the abandoned town. There wasn't a single silvally left. Zodiark must've summoned all of them to the Eternatus Core.

I should get back to them, the dragapult thought. Xeromus was still in there and undoubtedly had several people's attention. What if he overwhelmed them?

Don't worry, he's busy dealing with My Little Pony with a healthy side helping of cosmic power. If anything, you should be trying to get back to them.

... Could Nikki even hold up against the silvally?

Good thing that she's not having to fight alone, huh? Though yeah, prooobably want to make this not a solo fight in short order since I'm pretty sure that if there is an avenue to outright winning, it's through your friends.

Yuna caught a flash of white from the town. She darted to her left before multiple Moonblasts sailed through the air.

"What aaaaaawmbout the lightning?" Cresselia was addressing Reshiram. "Seifer gaaaaawt zapped. But Leo just gaaaaaawt the zap plate."

:copykin:

Oh boy, so Dreamweaver gets souped up at the literal moment that Leo does. Fantastic.

"Guys, can we not do this right now?" Yuna begged. She swiped the air. Giant, shadowy Giratina wings tried to swat Dreamweaver like a tiny bug. It dodged the first wing, which took the roofs off a couple of buildings, then blew apart the second with a dome of black energy. Probably a Night Daze.

"You cannot strike me down, Yaldabaoth," Dreamweaver chided. In the blink of an eye, it returned to the air, high over the town. The crystal arceus' hooves darkened. Another black dome raced out around it. Yuna flew away, but misjudged the Night Daze's speed. The dark energy swept her up. Battered her ectoplasm.

Correction. Former town. Since let's get real, it's going to be a small miracle if anything of it is left standing considering how much damage those stray attacks are doing.

Next thing the dragapult knew, the base of Mount Coronet was rushing up to meet her. Yuna twisted herself right and managed to crater into a grassy field right by the edge of the mountain.

Yuna: "OW."
:LiamDed:

The sky overhead filled with black orbs.

"Desist, vessel."

Dreamweaver's crystal wheel went pitch black. Still dazed, Yuna prepared herself for an onslaught of black beams.

Wow. She's still not giving up there. I honestly expected her to at minimum waver considering how grim things were getting.

Through the blue sheen of her Protect, she caught a brilliant violet crescent slicing through Dreamweaver's torso, before exploding in a burst of blue and purple energy. Gasping, Yuna dropped the Protect and tilted her head right.

A cosmic charizard flew through the air, blue-violet energy streaming from his starry belly to his arms. And a toxtricity sat on his back, Sludge Bombs pooling in her hands. Nikki tossed them into the smoke as Noctum caught sight of Yuna and dipped down.

Oh, hello Noctum. Though your video link for this section is dead. What was intended to be linked there originally?

"Princess!" he called, stealing glances back at the smoke.

"Did... did he just slice Arceus in half?!" Reshiram gawked.

Benefits of him not having all his powers back, I take it.
:gardeshrug~1:

No. Yuna pushed herself off the ground the moment she saw the smoke swirling. She flew up toward Noctum. Emerald energy pooled around her core.

"Fly like the wind, Ray!" she cried. Rayquaza burst forth from the griseous core, his Dragon Ascent turning him into an emerald arrow that tore through the giant globs of dirt falling toward the trio.

"Heads up!" Nikki thumped Noctum's back. "Bitch survived that somehow!"

Not really sure what the deal is with this chapter having "Heads up" as "Head's up", but you have another of those typos here again.

Rayquaza's Dragon Ascent blew away the smoke, revealing brown wispy clouds pulling Dreamweaver's broken crystal body back together.

"No way!" Noctum's tail flame shrank. "They can do that?!"

Nikki's mohawk sparked. "It's freaking cheating!"

Yuna: "Welcome to my life for the last five minutes." >_>;

"It is as I said." Dreamweaver's crystal wheel cracked back into place around their torso. "You merely delay your inevitable ends."

"Says you, loser!" Nikki spat.

[ ] Dreamweaver kept its attention down below. And Rayquaza hung overhead.

Another spot where IMO things would be a bit more expressive stopping and showing off some character reactions a bit more than you presently do here.

Yuna's ectoplasm tightened around her core. With a furious roar to remind Dreamweaver of his presence, Rayquaza divebombed the crystal arceus. Its body turned yellow to meet Rayquaza's Dragon Ascent.

Yuna silently pointed at Dreamweaver, then fired two large Dragon Darts at it. Noctum fortunately caught her cue. The air itself crackled around his claws. Instead of a giant crescent, he hurled that crackling air forward.

Dreamweaver was too busy stalling out Rayquaza's Dragon Ascent. Lighting sparks danced around a giant emerald spear trying to drive Dreamweaver toward the ground.

Yuna: "I swear to god, if he also tanks through this, so help me..." >_>;

The Darts hit Dreamweaver's flank. It buckled. The lapse was enough for Rayquaza's Dragon Ascent to push them straight into the path of Noctum's distorted air. Yuna pulled Rayquaza back to her griseous core just as transparent lines crisscrossed all around Dreamweaver.

"What?" was all Dreamweaver could manage before Noctum's Spacial Rend shattered the air around them. Its body broke apart into crystal chunks, exposing yellow-brown wispy clouds underneath that matched Dreamweaver's head.

Image

Really getting a lot of mileage out of that high level power scaling with this fight.

Yuna couldn't hold back now. She kicked and punched at the air. Four Giratina limbs pummeled Dreamweaver's wispy body. She drove the clouds and crystal chunks closer and closer and closer to the empty town.

"You're not our fate!" the dragapult shouted. "Not now... and not ever!"

Okay, yeah, that's absolutely Yaldabaoth speaking through her. I can already tell.

With one final thrust of her limbs, the Giratina legs melted together. The giant leg stomped Dreamweaver's remains into the center of Jubilife Village. The shockwave leveled the fountain in the middle of town, as well as most of the nearby buildings. Houses on the outside of the village toppled over. Trees uprooted. Wooden benches careened into the sides of the valley, blowing apart into showers of splinters.

When the Giratina leg vanished, there wasn't a trace of Dreamweaver's body in the ensuing crater. No crystal chunks. No brown clouds. It seemed... Yuna ground them to literal dust.

I'm going to take the under on that being the last we've heard of him, but man did that get cinematic there. Sucks for anyone who owned real estate within a few miles of Jubilife Village, though.
:Copyka:

Limbs trembling, Yuna clumsily drifted toward the ground. Her ectoplasm bubbled and boiled around her griseous core.

"Aggh... aagggggggggh." She wanted to throw her arms over it so badly, but it hurt to even try and lift her arms from her sides.

Oh. Well. Speaking about Yaldabaoth, looks like we're about to see a lot more of her in the not-too-distant future.
:worriedgoo~1:

"Easy, Princess," Noctum said, gliding toward her side. Despite her larger size, the cosmic charizard managed to help her to the ground. Even once he lay her down, the worried look didn't disappear from his face.

"Are you okay?" he asked. "How badly did that thing hurt you?"

"It's not— nnnggggh." Yuna dug her claws into the dirt.

Getting flashbacks of that sequence in XB1 where Shulk gets lit up by lightning as Zanza starts getting close to surfacing, just saying. Guess I'll find out pretty soon whether that read 60 chapters ago as to where things were going between Yuna and Yaldabaoth were right or not.

Nikki slid off Noctum's back. "I saw what happened." The toxtricity knelt down beside her. "Y'need healing or something?" She looked around. "Maybe there are some berries scattered in the rubble?" Her mohawk shrank with every word. "What the heck's a tiny village even doing here anyway?"

"That's, ugggh, a long story..." Yuna tried taking deep breaths. The griseous core tugged on her ectoplasm. Giratina clearly wanted her attention. Problem was... they weren't free from danger yet.

Um... that village was abandoned and uninhabited, right? Or did Yuna just kill off an entire Jubilife Village on the eve of PLA's events in some universe?
:uhhh:

"We should... we should..."

The ground trembled. Mount Coronet shook. The artificial sunlight over the village went dim for several seconds. Then brilliant gold energy erupted from the hole in the mountaintop. Hell, it widened the hole. Cracks spread down the mountainside.

Despite her pain, Yuna sat up in an instant. "What was that?!"

A sign that your victory celebrations were highly premature.

Nikki's mohawk was completely gone. "I, uh—" She tightly gripped the sides of her leather jacket. "I think that was an explosion?"

"Then we have to go!" Wincing, Yuna shakily floated into the air. "We have to get to the others!"

Noctum and Nikki exchanged nervous looks, only to nod at Yuna. The toxtricity climbed on Noctum's back again.

"We'll go first," Noctum said. "You make sure you can fly up there in one piece."

Well then. I suppose we'll find out what on earth happened back there next time since there's not much chapter left from this point on.

"I'll be fine." Yuna hovered through the air. Her griseous core continued tugging on her chest. Yuna ignored it, instead watching Noctum pass her by.

She couldn't think about Giratina right now. Yuna had to focus on the others. She needed to know they were okay.

That gold light... what did Xeromus do?!

~Unshakeable Fate: Dreamweaver Prime~
When the Renegade first shattered the Affirmer's Red Chain, the world collapsed upon itself. The collective souls and divine energy of that world became a singularity: the Space Globe. Within that singularity, the Affirmer and Creator were frozen in opposition. Perhaps they would have remained that way, had a human scientist from the Affirmer's old home not found the Space Globe and began to experiment with it.

Or, perhaps predicting the Renegade's interference, the Affirmer arranged for the singularity to fall into that scientist's hands. Thus ensuring fate stayed the course that He devised.

And you see, that's why I'm convinced we haven't heard the last of Dreamweaver in this story. Since if he was that effective at pulling off Xanatos Gambits in the past…

And made it to the end, I'm admittedly still trying to parse the full implications what on earth just happened there, but if nothing else, you can't say that it wasn't climactic and a very fitting end to like half a dozen chapters of things steadily crescendoing in this story. Possibly. Maybe. I remain open to the possibility that there will be another curveball back inside Mount Coronet. Like I know that you say that you've kinda burned yourself out on battles, but you honestly could've fooled me there with that setpiece sequence since you were clearly having a lot of fun towards the end. The implications that were woven in about Leo and Dreamweaver being connected, and the hints that all is not well with Yuna and Yaldabaoth cohabitating a body were also tantalizing, and I'll be looking forward to seeing how things play out.

On the more critical end of things, I noticed a couple typos that it probably makes sense to smooth out. I also thought that there were some parts of the story that felt a bit choppy or else where characters' perspectives weren't delved into as much as they could've been, but I realize that you have a specific style for this story, and I won't really begrudge you for sticking to it since I feel that things still held up really well.

Though glad to be back diving into the thick of things again, @Ambyssin . Hope the feedback was helpful, and with any luck, this won't be the last time that I'm back during Diner's Review Event.

Chapter 149: Fated Confrontation

Molayne stood beside his police vehicle, looking up at the sky through a set of binoculars. It had taken on a strange green tint. He swore he saw chunks of crystal floating in the air, too. But maybe his mind was playing tricks on him.

He lowered his binoculars and grabbed his two-way radio from his utility belt. It hadn't stopped vibrating since he'd gotten out of the car. Molayne clicked the button on it.

"—getting positively slammed with calls here!"

It was Acerola. Somehow sounding cheerful despite the bad news.

"About the sky?" Molayne put his binoculars to his eyes with his free hand again. "Yeah, I see it." He sighed. "Dunno what they expect us to do about it. And on my day off, no less."

"Well, you oughta get back to the station lickety split!"

"I know." Molayne returned the radio to the utility belt. As he did, he noticed flickering light from the pouch next to his radio holster. "Hmm?"

He opened the pouch and pulled out the Z-Crystal that weird talking ninetales gave him. It pulsated with warm glowing light.

Molayne's eyes slowly widened. He pulled his radio from his holster.

"Acerola?" he said. "I might be a little while."

"Say wha—"

Molayne holstered the radio. He held the Z-Crystal up toward the sky.

What was it that ninetales said again?

"You have got to be kidding me!"

Liza slammed a telephone down on its receiver, gaze glued to a computer monitor with a bunch of red waveforms and bars. She slumped back into her office chair. The momentum wheeled it halfway across the room. Liza looked out the window and saw green in the sky.

"How could he still not be back from lunch with the damn mayor?!" Liza rubbed her face with both hands. "The world's freaking ending again, but for real this time!"

A beldum floated up to Liza's chair. "Is the world ending but for real going to help me meet my new best friend?"

Liza facepalmed. "No, Jim. There are no best friends to meet right now and there won't be any if the world ends!"

The beldum teared up. "Ohhhhhh, I really wish you had let me re-download my sad noises. I could use them at a time like this."

Liza jumped out of her chair. She was about to flip it over when a second beldum nudged her back.

"What is it, Bob?" Liza spun around, squinting.

"Apologies, pardner." Bob spun around and looked at a desk drawer to the right of Liza's computer. "But yer desk be glowing like an old-fashioned Orre bonfire."

Eyes widening, Liza sprinted over to it. She opened the drawer so violently it almost detached. Inside, a Z-Crystal brimmed with pink light.

"You're kidding me!" Liza grabbed the gem. She turned to the beldum. "Forget Dad! We're going with Plan B!"

She really hoped that ninetales knew what he was talking about.

"Jessie?"

"What is it, James?"

"I'm scared, Jessie."

The eerie turquoise green that painted itself across the sky forced Team Rocket to land their meowth balloon by some grassy hills overlooking Vermillion City. They stood next to the deflated balloon, collectively looking up. Wobbuffet wiggled his arms around nervously.

"Wobba... wobba..."

"We ain't blind," Meowth said, throwing up his arms. "We can see it, too."

He faced Jessie and James. Meowth produced the Z-Crystal they'd gotten from the telepathic ninetales. "Dis thing's been glowing since we took da balloon down outta the air. Think it's time to use it?"

"I can't think of any clearer sign," Jessie said. "Though didn't that adorable fuzzball say he'd given one of these to the twerp, too?" She frowned. "Are we going to run into him if we use this?"

"Who cares about the twerp?" James blurted out. He pointed up. "I don't want to see what the sky's costume change is all about!"

Wobbuffet shakily saluted his teammates. "Woooobbbbbbuuuuufffeeeet!"

Kieran sat on a bleacher near Blueberry Academy's entrance. The four students starting a multi-battle stopped when gray clouds suddenly rolled across the sky, interrupting what was once a beautiful sunny day.

He sighed and got to his feet. Rain was probably on the way, which meant it was time to head inside. It would be nice and sunny in the Terarium. And Kieran could probably find a few students battling that he could study.

Before he started walking, one of the balls in his coat pocket wiggled. Kieran grabbed it.

"Dragonite?" he muttered. Kieran opened the ball. Blue light spilled out and Dragonite took shape.

"Arrooooo?" Dragonite's antennae twitched.

"Something wrong?" Kieran twirled a lock of his hair. "You want to stay out in the rain?"

Dragonite shook his head. He pointed at Kieran's pocket. "Arrooo rrrooo!"

"Hmm?" Kieran looked where Dragonite was pointing. He spotted a faint bit of light from his pocket. After fumbling around with some poké balls, his fingers traced a crystal. He pulled it out and looked at it.

"Oh. Right. This thing." He held it up. It teemed with light. "I dunno why it's doing this."

"Arrrroooooo." Dragonite leaned over. He grabbed the Z-Crystal from Kieran's hand.

"Hey!" Kieran frowned. "What are you doing?"

"Arrrrooooo!" Dragonite held the glowing Z-Crystal up. Kieran tried jumping to grab it, but Dragonite was too tall.

"C'mon, give it back!" Kieran said between jumps. "People are staring!"

Dragonite shook his head. He instead held the crystal tightly, looking up at the sky expectantly.

"Ffiiiiiaaa?"

Sylvee curled her ribbons around Penny's leg. The gentle squeeze helped settle Penny's racing heart. Still, her eyes were glued to her rotom phone. Notifications went off every second from her group chat. All with pictures of the green sky. Except for Ortega, who'd put some weird pink filter and lots of 😱 emojis over his.

A nudge on her other pants leg caught her attention. Espvee then tugged on Penny's eevee backpack with her telekinesis.

"What is it, girl?" Penny slipped her backpack off and opened it up.

Her Z-Crystal was inside. The one she'd carried around since that crazy anime adventure day. It glowed brightly.

Penny grabbed it from her bag, which she quickly put back on after. Then she furiously pecked away at her rotom phone.

Cassiopeia: Hey, you guys got Z-Crystals from that talking ninetales, right? Are they glowing?

Multiple typing indicators popped up.

VEri Nice: Yes, actually!

DJ Vice: Mine is!

Ortega the Great: same here. is this cuz of the sky?

Cassiopeia: I think so. We need to form up. Starsemble!

VEri Nice: Oh, yay, you're actually using it!
😄

Melaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa: ugggggggggggh y r u using it???? 🤬

Penny looked up from her rotom phone. Sylvee and Espvee sat patiently in front of her.

"Girls, I think... something's big happening," she said. "Again."

Yuna lay coiled around a ruined piece of what was once some marble zacian statue, staring up at the sky. The eerie turquoise green that appeared when Leo vanished with Zodiark had only grown more pronounced. Ripples spread across the sky like waves rolling across water.

The dragapult barely acknowledged the others as Gene successfully gathered them up in what was left of the Parliament building's entrance courtyard.

She felt like such a fool. Yuna and the others had focused so much on dealing with Paradox, that they lost sight of the big picture. And now they were paying the ultimate price.

Zodiark had Leo. He had all the plates. All the Paradigm fragments. The entire Red Chain.

She remembered Giratina's warning. That she needed to stand aside, or else they'd never stop Zodiark.

Her claws dug into marble.

"Pretty creepy... knowing Enamorus had all these statues made of me while puppeting me around for ages."

Zacian's musing snapped Yuna to attention. She looked over her shoulder to find Zacian sniffing a broken marble eye. Zacian noticed Yuna and chuckled.

"Sorry." Zacian nudged the eye. It rolled into the rest of the rubble Yuna was coiled around. "Thought a joke might lighten the mood."

Yuna sighed. "You're fine. It's hard to find anything light about... this." She waved her right arm around.

The dragapult returned her attention to the group. Gene stood atop the biggest piece of the destroyed Zacian statue. His stared at the sky, starcloud tail twitching and shoulder crystals dimly pulsating with light.

"There's a plan, right?" Widget paced nervously at the base of the rubble. His starcloud neck ruff slowly swirled around. "There's gotta be a plan."

"I don't have a plan," Gene said.

"But we can't wait here and do nothing," Diamond said. He stood beside Noctum, Cyril, and Valkyrie, a few meters behind Widget. The cosmic keldeo pointed his horn skyward. "Look at this! Zodiark's clearly up to something."

To their left, Igneous crossed his arms. "Clearly." He glanced at Shimmer, Scarlett, and Nikki. The toxtricity broke away from them to walk toward Yuna.

"Except we have no idea where Zodiark took Leo, do we?" the grovlazzle continued.

"My bet's Ginnungagap," Jaeger offered. The lycanroc mutt sat atop a pile of rubble next to Gene's, one leg crossed over the other. "At least for now."

"That reasonable guess," Grishi said. The zorotwo sat beside Jaeger, fiddling with his mane. "Except team don't know how to get there."

Yuna flinched. "We, um, have never gone through Ginnungagap on our own. We always found anomalies to take us through it." She traced a claw around her griseous core. "Could we even open rifts to it safely?"

"What other choice do we have?" Noctum tapped his claws together, tittering.

Widget turned to the cosmic charizard. "The Overseers!" He stomped a gold foreleg down. "We need to make contact with them yesterday!" Widget spun around and located Vince standing beside Grishi's rubble pile. "You've gotta do something! You and Miraidon!"

"Me?" The purple koraidon's antennae briefly unfurled into wings. "I'm not the one who established the links. That was Brother Kora with the monks!"

"Then let's get him over here." Widget looked at Gene, then began to scan the crowd of resistance members. "Koraidon!" His crest fanned out. "We need you to—"

Brilliant golden light erupted to Yuna's left. Grunting, the dragapult threw her arm over her face.

"What the hell?" Nikki had managed to make it over to Yuna. The toxtricity brushed against Yuna's side. "I see someone in the light!"

"Huh?"

Yuna lowered her arm. An ice ninetales stood between her rubble pile and Gene's. Rainbow light faintly shimmered in his chest ruff. It disappeared behind a worn blue scarf with a yellow sun stitched into it.

"Thank goodness." Ninetales sighed. "I made it in. And it doesn't feel any more unstable."

Across the ruined courtyard, Vince puffed out his dewlap.

"Shane?" Vince jumped off his rubble pile. His wings unfurled and carried him over toward the ninetales. "What are you doing here? Why are you—"

He facepalmed. "No, wait. Dumb question." Vince pointed up. "Surely you've got some answers for us, then."

Shane bobbed his head. "But we don't have a lot of time. In more ways than one."

"Then don't dawdle!" Diamond's starry mane and tail flickered. "Zodiark took Leo. If you know where he is, then let us know."

"Right." Shane's tails curled up. "Zodiark isn't far. He's out in Ginnungagap." A few of his tails pointed at the sky. "That light? It means he's beginning to siphon the energy out of the universe."

"What?!" Widget's starry neck ruff puffed out so much it almost covered up his beak.

"The Overseers have a bunch of their stations trained on this world right now," Shane continued. "Most of them see this place as a lost cause and want it destroyed. Because that should cut off a bunch of Zodiark's power."

"They can't do that!" Noctum blurted out. His tail flame shrank. "We've fought so hard to stop that from happening."

"I'm aware." Shane lifted some of his tails. "I don't want it to happen either. And it's not happening yet." He sighed. "Because Zodiark's latching onto other worlds, too. I think it might be places where Leo's plates originally got scattered to."

"Okay then." Nikki punched her fists together. "Then we go to where he's at and kick his ass!" Her mohawk grew in size, littering sparks around her. Nikki raised her right fist. "Who's with me!"

Several nodded in agreement, including Yuna. But then the dragapult saw the hesitant expression on Shane's face and her tail curled up.

"I know that look," she said. "What's the catch?"

"At this point... I think it's only safe for those of you wielding divine energy to face Zodiark directly," Shane said. He caught Nikki ready to interject, so he raised a foreleg. "And I don't mean anyone with a blessing. I mean those of you who are legends at your very core."

The icetales looked at Gene and Widget. "Or legend-adjacent."

"Seriously?" Nikki's mohawk shrank.

"Zodiark has an immense amount of creation power at his disposal," Shane said, ears flattening. "That much power... could wipe any of us out in a blink."

His expression hardened. "But that much divine energy can also be difficult to use effectively." Shane looked around at the others. "And it can be countered by other divine energy. As long as you're more competent with the power you have, you can match what Zodiark's got." He waved a few tails around. "Think of it like... technique and finesse versus raw power."

Everyone looked silently at one another. Probably mulling over Shane's explanation. But Yuna knew they didn't have a lot of time. Someone had to take charge here. And if Gene was staying quiet, then...

"So, the people who can go," Yuna turned to the group and started pointing her tail at her teammates, "are Noctum, Diamond, Gene, Widget... and me."

Shane nodded. "That sounds about right." He looked around the courtyard. "Though I think we should try to take Bahamut as well."

The cosmic lucario appeared at the base of Gene's rubble pile in a flash of blue light. "Of course I'm coming." He conjured his light blade. "If you tried to stop me, then I would cut you."

"Aha ha." Shane's tails twitched. "Sure."

"What about the rest of us?!" Nikki threw her arms up. "Are we just supposed to stand here, twiddle our thumbs, and hope we don't die?"

"Hardly." Shane looked up. "You'll have to hold the line."

Scarlett frowned. "Against what?"

"Whispers." Shane's eyes flickered pink. "I can sense them burrowing in from Ginnungagap. I bet they'll be here soon."

The dragonair's wings fluttered nervously. "I see." She slithered closer to Igneous and Shimmer. "Then we'll, um, do our best. I guess."

"We still have some big guns," Igneous said, looking around the courtyard. "And we've fought these things before. We just have to stay calm and lean on one another for support."

"That's the spirit," Shane chirped, tails wagging.

The green and turquoise sky flashed. Yuna's tail rippled in surprise.

"Um, I think we need to get going," the dragapult said, tapping her griseous core.

"Yep." Shane took a few steps back from them. "I'll escort you guys."

Diamond cautiously stepped forward. "And how exactly are you going to manage that?"

Golden light shimmered around the icetales. His body grew and expanded into a golden necrozma, perfectly reminiscent of the form Bahamut once had.

Of course, the cosmic lucario rolled his eyes. "Yes, yes." Bahamut walked toward him. "Let's just get moving already."

Yuna was about to float toward Shane when a pair of hands grabbed her right arm. She turned to see Nikki with a concerned look on her face.

"Hey," the toxtricity said. "Make sure you come back in one piece, okay?"

Yuna's chest ectoplasm tightened. "Of course. And you hold down the fort."

Nikki hugged a meeping Yuna, before slowly stepping back in Igneous' direction. Ectoplasm rippling, Yuna flew toward Shane. She looked his large crystalline torso over.

"So, um, am I supposed to grab onto his chest or something?" she wondered.

"The light is hard," Gene said, settling in between Shane's upper wings.

Yuna questioned the logic behind that. But it wasn't a matter worth arguing over. She had way bigger things to concern herself with.

The group all managed to grab onto the gold light on Shane's back. He turned his head entirely around.

"Everyone ready?"

Yuna nodded. The others offered assorted nods and grunts of their own.

Shane's rainbow eyes swirled around. "Then here we go! Hang on!"

He spread his four wings. A checkerboard portal opened overhead. Shane beat his four wings and flew up into it.

Not even a second passed before an intense pressure threatened to sink Yuna into Shane's ethereal back. She managed to push past it and look up.

Ginnungagap's familiar blue-purple glow was there, sure. But it paled in comparison to the massive crystal arceus floating there. Crystal threads connected Dreamweaver to a frazzled light ripple behind the group. Yuna's gut told her that her world was in there. That all the erratic twitches and sparks the ripple gave off were signs of its instability.

Brightly colored blasts came in from all directions. Wild and frenetic enough to make it difficult for Yuna to look anywhere but at Dreamweaver. It retaliated in kind with massive rainbow lasers. Yuna thought she heard some screams in the distance. She prayed it was her imagination.

"It sees you," Shane said. "Hope you guys don't mind a little heat."

Diamond's tail crinkled in alarm. "What's that supposed to me—eeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaahhhh!"

Shane rolled right. The cosmic keldeo nearly lost his grip. Yuna reflexively whipped her tail right and wrapped it around Diamond's back to help keep in place.

A rainbow beam went right underneath them. Or on top of them. With how bright Shane was, it was hard to tell what was up and what was down anymore.

It wasn't just that he was brighter, either. Yuna did feel warmer. And it was coming from Shane's back!

The necrozma now sported a gold halo behind the eight-pointed star on the back of his head. And golden feathers glistened where simple wing membranes had once been.

Yuna shimmied forward so she could see without the halo searing her eyes. Dreamweaver looked directly at them. Two crystal shards materialized by its shoulders. They fired rainbow beams, which only made it about halfway toward Shane before he unleashed a gold beam of his own that broke through Dreamweaver's attack.

"I need a way to get closer!" Shane shouted.

"What do you expect us to do about it?" Bahamut growled, digging his paws into Shane's back.

"Wasn't talking to you!" Shane said. He rolled right again, skirting past giant crystal shards that Dreamweaver flung toward him.

"I've got legends from the anomaly's world!" Shane continued. "That's why it's aggroing on me so hard. I've got to get them inside!"

"Inside?" Widget squawked. "You want Dreamweaver to absorb us? Are you crazy?!" The cosmic silvally's starcloud ruff puffed out. "That's how we lose!"

Shane tucked his wings in and dove down. Blue and purple blurred in the distance.

"Need you to trust me on this," Shane said. "He's in there. I'm sure of it."

He pointed his head up. Golden energy balls launched from his star-shaped head. They erupted in flashes of brilliant light.

"Hmph. Fine." Bahamut stared right at the Photon Geysers, aura feelers twitching. "Just hurry up and make it happen."

Diamond pointed a foreleg right. "Look out!"

More crystal shards sailed toward them. It looked as though Shane might try deflecting them with his tail, only for the crystals to suddenly change course and veer toward a grayscale pyroar. Pyroar exploded into black and white mist. Then a grayscale necrozma brought a gray light blade forward and cleaved through the remaining shards.

"Yes! Good!" Shane flapped his wings harder. "Keep them off my tail! I've gotta charge one heck of a Prismatic Laser!"

Bahamut craned his head in the gray necrozma's direction. "Bastard's stealing my technique," the cosmic lucario grumbled.

Diamond groaned. "That's what you're focused on?"

"Incoming!" Noctum shouted. He kept his left arm on Shane's back and turned to sling a Spacial Rend crescent through the air. It cleaved a large crystal spear heading for them in two. Brilliant green arrows then destroyed the two halves.

Shane flew higher. Rainbow beams passed underneath his golden tail. Yuna spotted Dreamweaver tracking their movements, only for a Moonblast to strike it right between its crystal eyes.

"Oh no you don't!" a golden xerneas cried. Yuna was surprised she recognized what a xerneas was right away. It must've been knowledge from absorbing Giratina.

Xerneas' antlers lit up. Rainbow light spread out from her toward a couple of zygarde flying beside her. But they were unlike any zygarde Yuna had seen. Both glowed with emerald light. Their ribbons held cannons twice as large their torsos. Each cannon fired a beam of green cells, battering Dreamweaver's torso. It gathered rainbow energy to retaliate, but the trio dove into another one of those checkerboard portals and safely escaped.

"Hold on, guys!" Shane said. "I think things are about to get bumpier!"

"How could they possibly get any bumpier?" Diamond said.

It quickly became clear why when Yuna peeked forward and found crystal diamonds littering the sky. Dreamweaver fired rainbow lasers at them. The diamonds refracted the beams, filling the air with dozens and dozens of beams.

"Never mind!" Diamond whinnied, digging his forelegs into Shane's ethereal back.

The necrozma tucked his wings in and rolled right to avoid one beam. Then he dove down to skirt another one.

But there were just too many. He was going to pull up right into the path of one!

"No! Stay put!" Diamond shouted. He raised his head up, yellow horn glowing. Blue-purple energy pulsed out and stopped the nearest beams in their tracks.

"Noctum!"

"On it!" The cosmic charizard let go of Shane. He got far enough away to sling a Spacial Rend upward. It carved a hole through the beam over Shane. Noctum managed to grab back onto Shane before he flew up through the hole.

"Nice one," Shane chirped. He was getting even warmer than before. Whatever attack he was charging needed to be worth it. Yuna thought her ectoplasm might start boiling!

"How do you expect to hit it effectively at this range?" Bahamut growled. "We have to close the gap."

Four crystal spikes raced toward the group from behind. Gene Phantom Warped into the air and slashed furiously with his spoon. He managed to stall the crystal spikes long enough for the golden xerneas from earlier to latch onto them with golden vines and hurl them back at Dreamweaver.

That got the crystal arceus' attention, letting Shane fly further behind it.

"Hurry, Gene!" Yuna shouted. She reached her right hand out. A Giratina wing appeared to grab the mega mewtwo and return him to Shane's back.

Dreamweaver concentrated its laser fire on Xerneas. But when it looked like the rainbow beams would overwhelm her, a mega charizard appeared in front of her, Protect at the ready. The Protect funneled itself around the beams, which shrank smaller and smaller. Prismatic light flowed through Charizard's belly and wings as he concentrated the energy into a tiny bullet. He fired it back toward Dreamweaver.

"Huh." Noctum watched the display, eyes wide with curiosity.

Rainbow light erupted in front of Dreamweaver. At the same time, the two cannon-wielding zygarde returned to Xerneas' side and fired cell lasers at Dreamweaver. On its other side, two lunala fired Moongeist Beams at it. Volleys of giant Ancient Power rocks followed soon after.

The attacks struck Dreamweaver in quick succession. Some plinked off its armor. Others struck, dimming the arceus' brilliant glow.

Shane flew closer to Dreamweaver's back. His light was white-hot to Yuna. Instinct screamed to let go, but she resisted and held on.

"Get ready!"

This time Shane's voice echoed in Yuna's head. Before she could ask why he'd switched to telepathy, he unleashed a massive rainbow beam. Bigger than any of the ones that Dreamweaver had fired. Yuna even thought she saw flecks of darkness woven around the light like the beam was a fine tapestry.

A blinding flash erupted in front of them. Shattering glass echoed throughout Ginnungagap.

Then, with stars still flooding her vision, Yuna suddenly lost her grip on Shane's back. A psychic force flung her forward!

The dragapult yelped in surprise. Judging from the shouts around her, the same thing had happened to her teammates.

By the time all the light died down, Dreamweaver was nearby, with a gash in its right hip. Platinum light seeped out from it, which rapidly grew closer.

"That's our path in!" Noctum said, flapping his wings despite the psychic force propelling him toward it. "Hurry! We've got to—"

"Watch out!" Widget squawked, pointing right. Another diamond had appeared in the air. A rainbow laser struck it and refracted in different directions.

But the gray necrozma appeared again. The lasers abruptly homed on him, giving the group room to head for the glowing gash.

The platinum light overtook them. It blinded Yuna for a few seconds, before fading away to show a large, crystal floor. There was a brilliant white fireball— no, a star on the other side. There was no ceiling. Instead, multicolor light swirled around, infinitely expanding upward.

A familiar figure stood in front of the star.

"Zodiark!" Widget barked. The cosmic silvally landed on the floor, growling.

He turned around to face the group. Multicolored threads connected him to the star. His body now had the same starry patterns as most of them, along with a golden wheel identical to Leo's on his back and similar wheel-like bracelets and anklets.

"Yaldabaoth." Zodiark looked at the dragapult. "Of course you made it through my shell."

"Heh." Gene summoned his psychic spoon. "Guess you're not as all-powerful as you claim to be, huh?"

"A meaningless boast." Zodiark turned back to the star. There was a faint outline inside the white flames.

Yuna's ectoplasm tightened. Without thinking, she blurted out, "Leo!"

"This is the beginning of reality by my definition," Zodiark said. He held his right hand up. The star pulsated. Rainbow energy traced along Zodiark's arm. He returned his attention to the group. "I am, of course, encountering resistance. But you, Yaldabaoth, are the means to counter it. And now you have delivered yourself to me. How thoughtful."

Yuna's tail lashed at the air. "Like hell I'm surrendering to you. Give Leo back now!"

"This arceus is my tool to wield as I see fit," Zodiark said. "As are you, Yaldabaoth." He raised his hand. Multicolored energy swirled around him. "The rest of your ilk have no place here. My Phenomenal Affirmation is absolute. And so... your precious friends shall be unmade by my hand."

He swiped at the air, conjuring static mist. Yuna and her teammates tensed up, ready to try anything to evade what Zodiark had planned.

... But nothing happened. Silence permeated the area, save for the star's crackling fire.

Zodiark looked at his hand, frowning. Then he turned to the star.

Gene laughed. "What's the matter? 'Phenomenal' powers not working right? Have you tried turning them off and turning them back on?"

A flash of scorn crossed Zodiark's face. He quickly hid it behind a confident smirk.

"I see." Sighing, Zodiark shook his head. "Yaldabaoth's chaos. Your vestiges of divine power. They're intermingling to protect you. How... precious."

Diamond stepped forward. "For someone who claims to want to erase suffering, you've caused us more than enough of it." The cosmic keldeo stomped a forehoof down. "It ends here. I don't care what power you claim to have. I won't back down."

Beside him, Noctum spread his starry wings. "We're not going to let you control anything anymore." He raised his fist. Blue-purple energy crackled around his claws. "We'll carve our own path forward."

"Every spirit deserves to live life for themselves." Widget's starcloud ruff puffed out. "Not the life that you dictate for them."

"Cruelty has a human heart, and jealousy a human face." Bahamut conjured his light blade and held it at the ready. "Terror the human form divine, and secrecy the human dress."

Gene pointed his spoon at Zodiark. "I promised Nova I'd see things through for him. It's time to finally see that promise through to the end."

Hearing everyone else's resolve, Yuna's griseous core glowed brightly. Black, spectral wings emerged from her back. She stared Zodiark down.

"Hear that?" Yuna said. "We're not backing down. This is our fight to win!"

Zodiark stared at all of them, expressing a mix of annoyance and disappointment. After a few seconds of silence, he said, "Empty, insignificant words."

He slowly rose into the air. The star followed him. Eighteen plates appeared around him. Gold filaments connected them to his wheel.

"If I cannot simply unmake you with a wave of my hand, then I shall overwhelm you all with the sheer might of creation. My Phenomenal Affirmation cannot be stopped!"

The sky rippled. An intense pressure filled the air. Then the sun behind Zodiark erupted, flooding the room with brilliant light.

Chapter 149

Molayne stood beside his police vehicle, looking up at the sky through a set of binoculars. It had taken on a strange green tint. He swore he saw chunks of crystal floating in the air, too. But maybe his mind was playing tricks on him.
I knew these guys would return! Though I'm curious, were the Z-Crystals merely a way for Shane to enter POV-2020, or is there more to his plan?
She really hoped that ninetales knew what he was talking about.
Honestly, it seems the more convoluted Shane's plans are, the more they end up working out
The eerie turquoise green that painted itself across the sky forced Team Rocket to land their meowth balloon by some grassy hills overlooking Vermillion City. They stood next to the deflated balloon, collectively looking up. Wobbuffet wiggled his arms around nervously.
As someone currently binging the Pokemon anime, this sounds exactly in character for Team Rocket :mewlulz: I even read their lines in their voices
Brilliant golden light erupted to Yuna's left. Grunting, the dragapult threw her arm over her face.
:letsgorb:
LET'S F*CKING GO!
"At this point... I think it's only safe for those of you wielding divine energy to face Zodiark directly," Shane said. He caught Nikki ready to interject, so he raised a foreleg. "And I don't mean anyone with a blessing. I mean those of you who are legends at your very core."
"Zodiark has an immense amount of creation power at his disposal," Shane said, ears flattening. "That much power... could wipe any of us out in a blink."
:sadwott:
Oh... yeah that's certainly an issue. Please don't Thanos snap my favorite characters
Golden light shimmered around the icetales. His body grew and expanded into a golden necrozma, perfectly reminiscent of the form Bahamut once had.
Speaks to how much everyone has grown that the appearance of an Ultra Necrozma doesn't even phase them anymore lol. Now it's just another Tuesday it seems
The necrozma now sported a gold halo behind the eight-pointed star on the back of his head. And golden feathers glistened where simple wing membranes had once been.
Is this a Kirby reference? Feels like a reference to either Void Termina (for obvious reasons) or Galeem from SSBU (Lord of Light and all). But that artwork is absolutely amazing. Raph knocked it out of the part :veelove:
"I've got legends from the anomaly's world!" Shane continued. "That's why it's aggroing on me so hard. I've got to get them inside!"

"Inside?" Widget squawked. "You want Dreamweaver to absorb us? Are you crazy?!" The cosmic silvally's starcloud ruff puffed out. "That's how we lose!"
If I had a nickel for every time characters needed to get inside the final boss monster... :mewlulz:
Bahamut craned his head in the gray necrozma's direction. "Bastard's stealing my technique," the cosmic lucario grumbled.
Tama technically is part of you, so is it really stealing your technique?
Xerneas' antlers lit up. Rainbow light spread out from her toward a couple of zygarde flying beside her. But they were unlike any zygarde Yuna had seen. Both glowed with emerald light. Their ribbons held cannons twice as large their torsos. Each cannon fired a beam of green cells, battering Dreamweaver's torso. It gathered rainbow energy to retaliate, but the trio dove into another one of those checkerboard portals and safely escaped.
MEGA ZYGARDE!!!!
LET"S F*CKING GO!
Owen? My only knowledge of Hands of Creation is the Guiding Light crossover chapter, but is this Owen? (Now that I know it is, I'm going to assume Owen's favorite technique is UNO Reverse)
"Hear that?" Yuna said. "We're not backing down. This is our fight to win!"
I just realized the characters confronting Zodiark has been the primary points of view throughout the story (baring Igneous). Was that intentional? Either way, awesome!

Fantastic chapter this week! I love how everything has come together in such a spectacular fashion, and I can't wait to see where things go from here! Kudos! 💙

Hi, Amby! Here to do another slew of Path of Valor chapters in my quest to be caught up before the finale rolls in, and the Diner Review Event is the perfect opportunity to do just that.

Last time proved to be a little unfortunate for our heroes in terms of Paradox gaining the advantage and yeeting everyone off to different dimensions, so now there’s a spanner in the works. :sadbees: Let’s see how they get out of this jam…

Chapter 138

First of all, a POV from Shane first, where I was expecting a Zodiark taunt like the last time, but it seems that the mere act of Paradox’s severance of our heroes is enough to get him to notice. Question is, will his divine intervention save the day, or will the gang find their own way out of this predicament?

Then over to Gene, where Dark Matter’s proving ever bit the Debbie Downer like it usually does. If only our resident Shadowtwo could bonk it over the head and tell it to shut up. :screm:

Oh hey, Deltarune Ch3+4 OST? I haven’t actually gotten around to playing them yet, so I won’t be surprised if I recognise it in-game from hearing it now. A bit like how I recognised Deal Gone Wrong in-game from the time you linked it during the prelude to the final fight with Ahsen.
"Enough!" He thumped his chest core. "I know I screwed up. I don't need you beating that dead ponyta! Leave me alone and let me think of a way out of this!"
I mean…I guess that works? Anything to get the voices on your head to sod off for a short while.

Oh yeah, Bahamut and Widget were thrown with Gene into Snowgrave-land. All the artificial ‘mons, together as one.

It did take me a minute to realise that the ‘feeling myself’ sensation wasn’t the Treasure of Ruin status of Chien Pao, it was the mention of snowflake that made me realise what this really was.
"It is." The cat nodded. "I am Chien-Pao. I speak for this world's savior: the Bittercold."
Yuuuuuup, I figured as much. So is this what happened to the Mist Continent - possibly Widget’s Mist Continent?

In the meantime, over to Yuna’s group, who have been deposited into gay baby jail. :sadbees:

Oh hey, some cameos from earlier in the fic.
The ceiling barrier suddenly disappeared. Another rift opened overhead and spat out a screaming salugia. Yelping, Yuna rolled close to the barrier to avoid being squished.

"Get your fat ass off me!" Shimmer hollered from underneath Jade.
Certainly being both a Lugia and a Salazzle would lead to not wanting you to be under her, as our resident twink honse prince is now finding out. :sadbees:
"Arianna?" Shimmer pushed past Jade's tail to get to the front of the cell. "You... you're working for Paradox now?!"
You’d think with how many betrayals have happened to Shimmer over the course of the story, that he’d grow desensitised to them at this point. Apparently not.

With Paradox taunting them it gives every feel of the villain gloating at a surefire victory before his plans are eventually brought to heel. Fingers crossed our other heroes can get them out of this mess.
"There's still a chance. They can make something happen."

Nikki rolled her eyes. "Can I have whatever you're huffing?"
Oh, you mean hopium? Better to huff that in a situation like yours than accept the inevitable.

Over to Noctum, Valkyrie and Leo, where everyone’s in disarray. Thank the heavens Leo has healing water powers at his disposal.

It does feel somewhat like a Darkest Hour moment right now, where nearly all options seem exhausted and Paradox has seemingly gotten to everyone. But the few loose threads that remain hanging will hopefully prove to be his undoing.
"Pssssht." Leo puffed his chest out. "I got that on lock. Check it."

Green and yellow energy swirled around the cosmic arceus. He shrank down. And down and down and down.

After a few seconds, a tiny joltik stood at Valkyrie's feet.

"See?" Leo's voice was so squeaky now. "Ready to infiltrate!"
I see we’re doing a HoC Willow on this. And oh god, now we’re about to hear Gen Z slang come out of a squeaky little Joltik. :unquag:

Awww, more Noctum and Valkyrie camaraderie. :veelove: I love these two.

And something tells me that with this room to breathe, the two of them are gonna have their S-support together. Looking forward to that one. :quag:

Chapter 139
No way in hell he didn’t do that as a gag. :mewlulz: But as Noctum thinks, whatever works for saving the team.
Living in Aeon, Noctum hadn't experienced that many storms.
Wouldn’t they have volcano storms and the like in Aeon? I suppose not the sort where there’d be rain buffeting one from all angles, so no wonder our resident ‘Zard’s unused to the rain.
"This." Leo rubbed his tiny hands together, then pointed them at Noctum and Valkyrie.

Pink light flashed around Noctum. Next thing the cosmic charizard knew, Leo practically towered over him.
Oh wow, this really is like if Willow took Leo’s place. :mewlulz: Curious if she was the influence behind this idea.
"Saw it on an over-the-top show the skorps were watching." Leo hopped in place. "There was a fairy-type joltik who made a bunch of the cast tiny using fairy energy." He looked up at the outcropping. "What was it called again? Legs of Genesis or something?"
Literally right as I was thinking this! :mewlulz: Also way to use HoC’s joke name for a reference to it.
Eternatus Gunners and Brawlers patrolled the platforms.
Where’s the Eternatus Swordfighters? We’re missing out on those. :sadbees: (I forget if I made this gag before.)
"Ugh, can you believe Stakateresa left Stakaterry for his evil twin brother, Stakatempleton?"
Imagining a sitcom full of Stakataka is certainly an image. :mewlulz: Then again, Ultra Beasts are only special by normal world standards and are said to be akin to normal wild Pokémon in their own…
"It's been downhill since season 75. Still, I'm in it to see how it all ends."

"I feel you." The second Gunner shook his head. "Even the All My Stakataka subreflectit agrees... the writers really jumped the sharpedo with this one."
Seventy-five seasons, huh. :unquag: Somehow I get the feeling it had been downhill long before that but this particular Gunner’s been huffing copium that it hasn’t. (And it’ll probably keep being commissioned till the end of time - although given the current state of the world, that might not be too far off…)
"Right." Noctum tittered. "Then let's get into the vent."

"Venting like sussy bakas," Leo declared, skittering toward the vent bolted to a portion of concrete.
Better be prepared to act oblivious when accused of venting later, and then convince everyone that Green is sus.
It reminded Noctum of infiltrating that uPhone factory. God, that felt like forever ago. It had been, what, three or four months now?

Boy, how things have changed.
Things certainly do change a lot in 110 chapters. And Noctum’s certainly changed a lot since then, going from black Charizard to cosmic Charizard who was once Palkia.

And through the prison they travel, with a possible need to employ some of that ‘gentle persuasion Valkyrie spoke of.
[Inmate HC17B, Flygon, G, please report to the D Block custodial office for cleaning duty. Again, Inmate HC17B, Flygon, G, please report to the D Block custodial office for cleaning duty.]
Seeing the HC and a Flygon named G makes me wonder if this is meant to be a veiled nod to Gahi as another HoC reference? Or unless it’s the Flygon lawyer from the courtroom arc all those chapters ago.

Meanwhile, over to Bittercold Bad End world, where Chien Pao darts away and our allies are gonna have to pursue him. Listening to it more, Glowing Snow really does give a feeling of cold, quiet isolation - fitting for a desolate landscape like this world.
Gene noticed a few blurry shapes. Shapes that soon turned to outlines of pokémon. An emolga and a dunsparce beside a swanna and a quagsire.

... Only they were ice sculptures. They had to be, right?
Ohhhhh dear, they got to them too. :unquag: Not my favourite supporting cast in the main PMD games!
"In worlds like this one... the Bittercold is an offshoot of me. Or we're connected. Feeding off people's negativity. Believing the solution to negativity's constant presence is to end the world."
A natural conclusion most seem to come to in mainline PMD canon, myself included when I’ve written Gates stuff before. Both feeders off negative energies with one of them being an icy boi.

And now for Gene to convince Chien Pao that the Bittercold’s way is not the way things should be. It’s curious that Chien Pao seems calm about it; almost akin to a calm elder hearing them out, without necessarily trying to foist negative propaganda upon them as Xeromus might’ve in earlier chapters.

But thanks to Widget, Chien Pao agrees to help! :quag: And now maybe he’ll understand the purpose of fighting for your friends instead of kneeling to the whims of a snowflake.
Instead of an attack, gray-white paws stepped into the snow, followed by a fluffy body and nine fluffy white tails. A rainbow gem sparkled underneath their chest fur.
It’s him! :veelove: Now he finally meets our heroes in person.

Chapter 140

Cute chapter cover art, which does help give a size perspective with smol Noctum and Joltik!Leo.
[Attention prisoners. Inmate FB21B, Quilava, F, please report to the Assimilation Chamber for Eternatus Trooper assimilation. Again, Inmate FB21B, Quilava, F, please report to the Assimilation Chamber for Eternatus Trooper assimilation.]
Okay, my hunch was correct and this was indeed a reference to a fic. Namely, Flowerbeds with Fenn. I guess that’ll soon be an F for F. :sadbees:
[Will the medical team please report to the B Block rec room? Repeat, medical team to— err, scratch that. Will the Body Disposal Team please report to the B Block rec room? Repeat, Body Disposal Team to the B Block rec room.]
Whatever the hell went on in there? :unquag: Someone must have gone too enthusiastically on the sparring circuit - that, or something more nefarious.

Ah yes, good ol’ brute force - it has its applications and Valkyrie is absolutely right to consider it for something here and now.

It did seem like at various points earlier on that Sticky was a reluctant yes-mon to Paradox’s schemes, but seeing him here and now firmly grounds him in the fact that he plans on carrying out the emperor’s will, in part due to having power over the prison and not losing it.
"Ha!" Sticky gripped the inside of his barrier. "My assistant answers to me and me alone, filthy rebel!"
Inb4 she jumps ship again but this time to the side of the heroes. Probably not but it’s a funny thought regardless. :copyka:

And now all the prisoners are out! :quag: At least it could all be deactivated at once instead of having to find cell keys like it would be in a more old-fashioned prison.
Clearing his throat, Leo shouted, "Ahhhhh! This is terrible! We're completely outmatched! Especially with all this chaos!" His eyes welled with tears. "Please don't hurt us and toss us in with the other priority prisoners!"
Well, that’s certainly a strategy. How good a Baby-Doll Eyes could Leo pull off in normal circumstances? Were he disguised as a dog ‘mon, no question that folks would be cooing over how cute he’d be.
A white beam came out of his golden hoof... only to fizzle out harmlessly against the shield.

"Stand back!" Noctum tried a Spacial Rend crescent. It had cleaved through plenty of things before, so why not a shield?

But the barrier even managed to absorb his Spacial Rend. And when it did, the floor around the priority cell shot toward the ceiling.
Oh dear, that’s not good at all. :unquag: When even the growing up god can’t dissolve a shield with his godly powers, that’s troubling right there.

Noctum’s got a big mission on his shoulders. Fingers crossed he’ll be able to come through.

Back to Bittercold Bad End land, where we meet with the Almighty Idiot himself. Even if I don’t want to call our fluffy boyfailure Necrotales that.

Ah, Overseer lore. I’ve become well-familiar with this thanks to Hands of Creation and Catastrophe Academy.
"You guys have been fighting for a while — some longer than others — and I know what that's like." Shane took a deep breath. "I also know what's it like to be in a desperate situation. And nearly end up at each other's throats.
A reminder of old times when our old hero wasn’t so learned and drew the ire of nearly all he knew, including his partner. Must be lifetimes ago for him…

And now our heroes have a lead. Here’s hoping Shane can take them far enough to jump in at the right time.

Chapter 141

Starting out with Leo, and looks like Yiazmat’s proving capable in this moment directing her troops and getting into the fray herself. You go, Queen. :quag:
"I'm willing to be the bigger 'mon here and forget the past," the garchomp growled. "Just tell your guys to stop flailing around and work with us."

"Nevah!" Gus pointed a claw at Valkyrie's belly. "You're da whole reason we're even in dis mess in da first place!"
Would the team have any qualms if Valkyrie engaged in her old profession here? If they’re an obstruction in the way, then…

Well, never mind, it appeared the convincing worked, and now another load of mooks joins the ever-swelling ranks of our heroes’ army.
[If you start rioting, we will suspend all your rec room access!]
What, the rec room that has a body in it? Dunno, seemed to me like access was going to be limited there anyways.

And while Leo camps out the reinforcements (hopefully not same-turn reinforcements), we pivot over to Noctum, who’s being shot at by Gunners and Iron Hands. I sure love the Iron Hands’ constant hands jokes. :mewlulz:

But it’s getting hard for Noctum, with these constant gadflies of Paradox ‘mons and Eternatus Gunners haranguing him every step of the way, and the fact that all of our heroes inside the cell are depending on him alone to get them out of there is certainly quite the weight upon his shoulders. Here’s hoping Leo, Valkyrie and Yiazmat can be finished on their end of things to be able to rejoin him.

Oh dear, here’s hoping the team doesn’t actually get dissolved into battery juice. Or even if they do, that they can be rescued after. No heroes to stop Paradox and Zodiark would be something of what we call a Bad Thing. :unquag:

Along comes the Gigantamaxed Melmetal that the chapter art teased. Looks like the ante just got upped.
"Ha!" Leo galloped between Melmetal's legs, a Sacred Sword protruding from his head.
When did you decide to mimic Diamond, Leo? :copyka: I suppose they do share an equine-ness about them.

But at least Leo’s teaming up spirit is alive and true with Noctum and their incoming double strike against the giant Melmetal. And the big explosion’s enough to shatter the cell’s barrier too! :quag:

So Gus chose to stay in the prison, huh? Well, that’s his problem. His funeral when everything falls to ruin.

And now the stage looks set for Valkyrie and Noctum’s S Support. After a big battle like that, with the end nearing, it does feel an appropriate time for it.

Chapter 142

And would you look at that! That chapter art says it as much.

But before we can get to the dergs in love, there’s the matter of Shane’s passengers, and Widget in particular.
"You're not about to try and ask me on a date or something, are you?"
Hopefully not unless Widget wants a Lucario’s spirit haunting him for the rest of his days.

A big oof for Widget being confronted with these truths and the very possibility he’ll disappear. But given how the heroes his past self would’ve summoned fought on regardless of the inevitable truth that they’d disappear, it stands to reason that our resident starry Silvally should be able to do the same. And maybe if the miracle Shane implies actually happens, he might be able to still be himself in a new world.

Back to the base, where Noctum’s probably going to have one hell of a nap after his shower. But I reckon a certain Garchomp might well get between him and his beauty sleep.
"V-Valkyrie?" Noctum's voice cracked. "Something, uh, up?"

"I'm ready to eat," she said. "How about you?"

"S-Sure."

"Great. Meet me on the roof."
It begins! :veelove:
Noctum laughed nervously. In the process, he dropped the bone he was holding. It tumbled down the roof and off into the starry abyss below.

"Oops."
Even after all the character development he’s gone through, it’s good to know that Noctum’s still Noctum. :mewlulz:

And though Valkyrie’s still acting just a little bit guarded, she’s well more out of her shell than she was when Noctum and her first met (even if back then, it was definitely alluding to the fact that these two would become a couple eventually).

Reading this, yeah, it definitely wouldn’t be out of place as a Fire Emblem S Support, alright. :mewlulz: Especially with Valkyrie’s “Damn you for making me fall in love with you!” comment.

There is still the reminder, though, that everything’s planned to go back to its original state once Zodiark’s been felled. :sadwott: But maybe…there might be a new reality, a new world where the relationships forged now won’t be forgotten.
"I want this," Valkyrie continued. "I want us so badly. But I don't want to get hurt."

"I don't either," Noctum said.

"Then what do I do? What can we do?"

"Believe." Noctum nudged her head with his snout. "And we'll make our case when the time comes."
It’s really nice to see Noctum buoying Valkyrie like this, where she’s in turmoil over him and her not being able to be together. And the hope that things might turn out okay in the end provides them with a new resolve to keep at it and not ditch their bond just yet.

It was a great heartfelt scene. I loved it. :veelove:

Speaking of loving couples, over to the other, actually married pair, where Diamond’s in a similar state of unwanting to go back to the way things were with him as Dialga. I guess that’s two for two on that front. (Also, pretty art of Diamond! :quag:)

Cyril being a tease as always and Diamond getting flustered to sensations of intimate gestures. I love the opposite dynamic going on here. :mewlulz:
Now you're too strong for the emperor to do anything about... unless he pulls out a nasty trick like he did with the Terraformers."
Do not jinx the gang now, Cyril. Not when they need luck more than ever on their side for the fights to come. :unquag:

And we end on an allusion to the in-betweens between Cyril and Diamond. :copyka: I can only imagine that our once time god would still be baffled by what the Cosmozork knows about that sort of thing.

Chapter 143

A Nidoking Overseer, huh? Trying to ponder if this is alluding to anything in particular, whether it being something earlier in the fic or something from Namo’s side of Overseer worldbuilding.

Either way, it’s showing that side of the Overseer conflict and their fight against Zodiark, who’s proving as evasive and taunting as ever. (Side note, I know that Harry Lloyd’s meant to be the headcanon voice here, but anytime I hear Zodiark the first voice to pop into my head is Blake Ritson.)
The eerie sheen pulsated. Then the giant boulder dropped from the sky. Nidoking one more defiant smirk before it crushed him.
Welp, RIP to him. :sadbees: Fingers crossed he can be revived in the end.

Now over to Leo, who’s a bit alone after everyone goes their separate ways and the team’s lovebirds go to have their S Supports.

And in the meantime, the sandwich derg Overseers are arguing with each other. Brother Koraidon over in his world definitely had a love for sandwiches, but I wonder if these two share that love as well.
"Well, did you ever hear about the Almighty Idiot?" Miraidon wondered.

"Y'mean Shane?" Jaeger scratched the back of his right ear. "I was interning under him when an accident landed me here."
So on that note, I’m now wondering if Jaeger has any relation to Midnight from Guiding Light? Or maybe not Midnight, but Dusk - maybe a descendant of her, just like how Ruby in CAD was a descendant of GL!Salazzle.

And it seems that just like Demerzel, Miraidon was planning to cut it and run before outside matters cut short his progress. But at least our former pirate’s stuck with the right people, instead of being creamed by one of the Big Bads like Demerzel was.
"Then it's just like I thought. The Overseers have this world marked for destruction."
Well, looks like we’ll probably have a few HoC-esque scenes in the finale of the Overseers watching Eternatus like a hawk, but there’ll be dissenting voices among them to hold their fire. Given that Shane made a brief cameo in the HoC finale, I wonder if Xenon might make one here too. :eyes:

Off everyone else heads, leaving just the starry forms of Widget and Leo where the former has more moments of wondering.

I do have to feel for Widget that he hasn’t gotten any new powers that the Voice of Life could perhaps have possessed once. The question is, what mental block would have to be lifted for him to attain them?

Over to Mount Coronet, huh? Good thing there’s no enemy presence there anymore (hopefully), especially given what happened both in the Chapter 120 flashback and the events before and after it.

Oh right, I forgot about the Mew that were made for Paradox’s genetics programme. So they’ll be the ones to give Widget his power? :eyes:
A very starry good boi right there. :veelove:

Now over to Paradox, where he’s going full on with the maniacal laughter, all while Demerzel watches him like an unwitting audience member. But it seems like he does have a few more tricks up his sleeve…

Chapter 144

Seems to be starting off with an Igneous POV. That’s good - it’s been a bit since he took centre-stage.
Aside from some of the still-unconscious pokémon they'd freed from corruption, there was a pavementified sylveon propped against the wall.

"The hell?" Igneous frowned. "Is that supposed to be—"

"Xander," Shimmer said. His tails crinkled up. "Apparently Gene did this to him."
Good! A very fitting punishment for him, the prick. :screm:

And it seems like there’s the unfinished business of Nikki finding out what Vortex and Arianna did with Scarlett. The two of them were bandmates, after all - but then Scarlett is also in Igneous and Shimmer’s little polycule, so they deserve to know that info as well.
"By the time I was a kirlia, I knew I couldn't be 'Andrew' anymore."
Oh? I wasn’t expecting a trans revelation with her. :eyes: And to think that her gender and climbing her way to the top was another thing for Vortex to hold over her…What a manipulative bastard. :screm:
"Given how she's made being a suck-up her career, she's probably into that sort of thing."
That’s our Nikki to make comments like that. :mewlulz:

Now over to Scarlett herself, where it turns out Starlene’s an expert eavesdropper. It no doubt comes in handy at times, but with an ability like that comes a lot of unwanted information too. :unquag:

I do ponder how the eventual make-up with Justine and Shimmer will be, given that it did seem like the Virizion was under Isola’s spell and became Paradoxed right when the Poké dropped for her. Likewise I do wonder if there’ll be a make-up with Diamond, Tobias and Grayson as well.

This talk about the inert Honedge makes me wonder if it’ll regain its life and maybe it might evolve to a Doublade, giving Igneous two swords. :quag:
The idea of Igneous being forcibly turned on the party by Zodiark’s manipulations is more than a little unnerving. :unquag: Good thing that never came to be this whole time.
Shimmer looked at Igneous' arm, then hopped up onto his cot. Igneous' tail leaves crackled in surprise, and nearly went ablaze when Shimmer leaned his head on the grovlazzle's shoulder.
D’awwww, he’s getting flustered around his twink horse boyfriend~ :veelove:

Now over to Yuna and Jade, where the truth comes out about Reshiram. What a shame about him, and hopefully he’ll be able to come back in some capacity when all is said and done. :sadbees:

Things sure have changed a lot for Yuna and Nikki, haven’t they? Especially when they started off on uneasy footing, although from what I recall, it wasn’t long before Nikki opened up a bit more to Yuna thanks to their cooperation until then.
No matter what Xeromus thought. Or Zodiark says. We'll make our own future.
Just as a certain Monado Boy would say once. Fitting, against the Harry Lloyd villain. :copyka:

Chapter 145

I’m willing to bet, given the information of last chapter and Shimmer running in fright in that chapter art, that I know what the source of that fire storm is gonna be…
Shimmer and Scarlett frowned at the toxtricity. She smirked back at them.

Why did that make blood rush to Shimmer's cheeks?
Jealous, are we, Shim Shim? Maybe that’s a sign you need to be more open with the polycule you’ve got. :copyka:
"And you're sure this is about making sure that power can't come after me?" Leo's gaze settled on Shimmer. "Cuz my vibe check is that you two want some smoochy-smoochy horizontal boogieing, but this is yucking up your yum."
Perhaps it’s no surprise that an Arceus would have a built-in gaydar to detect romantic feelings between his teammates. :mewlulz:

And at least the team caught the trap in time before it screwed them over later on. I do wonder what that might’ve looked like had they not detected it sooner - probably would’ve been a catalyst in the ‘things going from bad to worse’ department. :unquag:
Judging from his teammates' befuddled expressions, they had to know he was flying by the seat of his nonexistent pants.
What, implying that the rest of the team hasn’t indulged in a good bit of that until now? Let the honse cook. :(

And so his solution is to have Scarlett do an Azura and sing Lost in Thoughts All Alone to vanquish the corruption from his body. Not quite, but it definitely reminded me of that.

And with that, the butterfly from Kirby’s been exorcised from Igneous. But with it, the power that revitalised him back when he was blown up one hundred chapters ago. :unquag:

Good thing Leo’s there to restore him, at least.
Then Igneous leaned forward and pressed his lips to Shimmer's snout. The ponytales jolted for a second before leaning into the kiss.

"Awwwww!" Starlene squeed, only for Scarlett to shush her.
Took the words right out of my mouth, Starlene. Love confessions will never be hella cute. :veelove:

So the power of love overcame the corruption in the end. Forget the power of friendship - it turns out the power of love is even more potent than that! :copyka:

Over to Grishi, who we’ve not seen in a bit. It’s funny seeing him interact with the ultra-serious Bahamut, along with the normally ditzy Jade. And I see her objective - she’s trying to find a way to talk with her fluffy Reshy hubby again.

And here we have Bahamut, apologising for a change? Heh, the old curmudgeon must be getting soft with the end of the world in sight.

Looks like Shane’s gonna have the solution, which will have to wait until Zodiark’s been dealt with.

But in the meantime, it looks like old misgivings that Jade had for Bahamut look to be settled, to the point that Bahamut even offers to train with her. Hopefully when this is all over, Jade and Cecil can have a happy reunion. :quag:

Chapter 146

Over to Shane, where Zodiark’s doing his song and dance of boasting of his Eternaverse. Not long before we can oust him once and for all, at least.
"The Top Overseer himself has shown up." Tama's eyes swirled around like grayscale lava lamps. "He's asking for you. Now."

"Xenny?" Shane shrugged his upper wings.
Eyyyyy, I had a feeling he’d show up at some point. :quag:

But either way, the destablising of POV-2020 sure as hell ain’t good. Especially when the penultimate Big Bad still hasn’t been dealt with and is running amok with the Rift Ripper. :unquag:

Over to Yuna, Nikki, Shimmer and Igneous, where Nikki’s suddenly decided to take up dart throwing. But I thought Yuna was the resident (Dragon) dart thrower of the group? :copyka:
Sighing, Yuna put her hand on Nikki's shoulder. "Um, I think this is where you do that 'holding the L' thing Leo's mentioned."
Seems like Mama’s picking up on her son’s slang. Can’t quite determine if that’s a good thing or not - at least in the ‘understanding him’ department.
"Admit it. Despite the teasing, you actually think of Igneous as a friend, don't you?"

Igneous raised a brow at Nikki. The toxtricity threw up her arms. "What do you want, a freaking neon sign? Yeah, sure. Twiggy's a friend. You too, Pillow Prince."
D’awwww, she’s admitting to it! Our Nikki’s come far, so she has. :veelove:

But enough friendship times, because Paradox has a broadcast for everyone.
The footage cut back to Paradox who had taken a glass of champagne from a tray held by the most pitiful looking sunflora Yuna thought she'd ever laid eyes on.
Little does she realise he’s been one of the more prominent antagonists this whole time…

And now the gauntlet’s been thrown on Paradox’s end, which means it’s time for the heroes to act.

Oh no, Radiance is being absorbed into the monolithic skyscrapers of modernity. The horrors! :unquag:

But at least Miraidon’s pirate ships are coming into their own with their Eterna-proof shields. A lucky ally to have gained at this juncture, along with the Medicis and just what they’ll need to turn the tides! :quag:

Protagonists learning Protect to fend off the enemy’s strongest attacks? Peering over Namo’s shoulder once again, I see. :copyka:
[Rebels over here!] Iron Thorns waved its stubby little arms around. [Form up!]
No funny ‘thorn’ puns like the waves of Iron Hands did? Laaaaaaame. :sadbees:
Igneous followed, thrusting his arm back to fling Honedge at the Iron Moths.
Didn’t realise Honedge was more like a Kodachi with how Igneous throws it. With how it’s connecting to Igneous since he became a Grovlazzle, I would’ve expected sword beams for a ranged option, or sword beams made of fire like what Roy’s Binding Blade can do.

Back to Yuna where things aren’t exactly going swimmingly with literal rains of Hyper Beams bearing down on her and her allies.
"By ze way." Gilbert looked around. "Did Mademoiselle Chomp catch any of my admirable heroics?"
Sorry, camarade, but she’s taken. No luck for you in wooing her.

And there’s the evil emperor himself, who certainly seems to love blipping out of the line of fire. I guess that makes two wielders of the Rift Ripper who are content to use it to get the hell out of dodge.
Out from the rift emerged a positively massive robot... resembling Saint Zygarde's true form!
A pity Sticky's out of the picture and not piloting it, because then that would’ve made the second Poipole line Amby character I know that would pilot a Zygarde robot. :copyka:

Chapter 147

Oh crud, Zodiark’s taken advantage of the chaos and claimed Leo’s plates for himself. That’s nooooot good. :unquag:

And now because of Zodiark’s Paradigm fragments, he’s being bent to his will? Ohhhhh shit. Doubly not good! :unquag:
"Get up, Iggy!" Shimmer pleaded. "We've gotta move!"
🐴: “Get up, Iggy! We have a Zygarde to burn!”
"Remember the plan!" Yiazmat called. "We must press forward! Even with that infernal machine!" She turned around and blasted Dragon Darts behind her.
Queen Mamapult still coming in clutch with her guidance and power. Definitely one of my favourites across the course of the fic, no doubt. :quag:
Fiery crescents raced forward and struck the lightning guitar.
Eyyyy, he can do a Binding Blade with it!
[Y... ou...] Static garbled Iron Moth's voice. [You won't... win.]

[You can't... defeat... Paradox,] the other Iron Moth added. Its voice was a static mess, too. [Just... give up.]
Last ditch effort of the everymon students that were brainwashed. Probably not ones we’d miss too much.

Now over to Boss Kitty, where there’s debate over whether or not to pull their trump card. All the while, giving commands to his squadrons like a rebel leader should. Really coming into his own here! :quag:
Neither of them looked convinced. Rolling his eyes, Gene returned to the monitor bank.

This would work. It had to work.
Well, you know what they say about not counting your Eggs before they hatch…Best hope your plans work out this time, Gene.

Back to Yuna, where she’s having to deal with Paradox himself in the Iron Conqueror suit.
[I've really got to hand it to you, rebel!] Iron Hands slammed the ground. [You've really outdone yourself in the stupidity department!]
You see? The other Paradox ‘mons ought to have taken notes in the pun related department. The Iron Hands have it down pat.

Nice to see Shiva, Quetzal and Ifrit fighting together as one again, just like in the Prologue. :quag: Just like our heroes, they’ve changed over the course of the story but they’re fighting for the right cause with no corruption plaguing them anymore.

Now over to Dog Team, where there seems to be a horse and two dragons in there too. I call false advertising! :screm:
"Scatter!" one of the Brawlers shouted, but it was too late. Iron Treads barreled through the Brawlers like they were glorified bowling pins.
(Wii Sports announcer voice) "Nice throw!"

Nice to see time and space working together to bring down this great big brute of a robot Zygarde. All those past qualms seem to be but an afterthought against the impending doom the universe faces.

But right when they’re getting the upper hand, along comes Iron Enforcer, and now in sets what the chapter art’s all about.

Interesting that Widget’s trying to play the convincing game with a robot. How well will he manage this, I wonder?
[I am successfully outmaneuvering you,] Iron Enforcer taunted. [This counts as 'better.']
Going swimmingly, I see. :sadbees:

Oooh, interesting how the overdrive mode almost makes Iron Enforcer like how Deoxys would be, in the sense of going all defence or all offence. No wonder, given who its architect is. :copyka:
Iron Enforcer exploded in a blaze of red and purple energy.
Welp, RIP for Iron Enforcer. That’s three for three in terms of ‘exploding Silvally in an Ambyfic’. :sadbees:

And now it seems Gene has joined the fray. :eyes: The final part of the battle looks to be unfolding in short order.

Chapter 148

Gotta love the sea shanties the Blackskull Bucaneers are coming out with against Paradox here.
Yuna's chest ectoplasm tightened around her core. She had to trust Leo could handle himself.
Little does she realise just what’s happening to him at the hands of the other Big Bad. :unquag:

Over to Noctum and Diamond, where everyone’s planning to channel their attacks through Gene for an all-out attack. (Speaking of which, good time to show your face at last, Boss Kitty.)

Oh wow, so Gene really is just charging a black hole Spirit Bomb with all these attack charges? This is going to prove one hell of a nuke to unleash upon Iron Enforcer when it does go off. :eyes:
"Troopers! Get back here and protect your emperor! Get these ingrates away from me!"
Ohhh, he’s on the ropes if he’s calling his troopers back to protect to him. A total beatdown ain’t too far away~

The reinforcement waves are being dealt with, leaving the calorimetry bomb to fire at Iron Enforcer. This is gonna be one biiiiiiig explosion.
Dark Matter wasn't interjecting. Instead, it funneled every bit of energy it shared with Gene to keep the energy ball stable.
Awwww, he’s helping! :veelove: Good to see Dark Matter contributing to the cause in this all-or-nothing attack.
"Don't get cocky," Dark Matter said. "Can you feel that nearby anger?"
…Goddammit, he still has some firepower left, doesn’t he. :screm:

But at least Widget can get in a riposte of his own - all the more fitting for him given his previous stint as Paradox’s underling.
The deoxys surged into the air, opening rifts at a breakneck pace. First ten. Then twenty. Then fifty.
Doing an Avengers on our heroes by summoning rift after rift, I see.

The more he gets pushed to the edge, the more insane Paradox becomes, and that includes him destabilising countless dimensions with his fused Rift Ripper. This is gonna take one hell of a clean-up for the Overseers once this is all done. :unquag:
"Y-Yes! The Great! I am doing such a good job with you pathetic whelps that I've given myself another promotion!"
Still at it with the corny title additions even this late in the game, are we? Watch him come up with another one in his dying moments.
"Prepare yourself, Mewtwo!" Paradox said through his unhinged laughter. "This is the end for all of you! Ś̵̨̅̏Ả̶͉͈Ȳ̵̧̪͑ ̴̮͙͑͘Ğ̵̦͙̀O̴̟͂O̷̳̠̐̌D̶̝̤͛B̶̲̞̫̔̈́Y̷̫̜͉̐̇̅E̸̫͙͒̊̊!̵͉̤̊͑̈́"
Oh god, he’s getting out the eldritch text. Not a good sign. :unquag:

Aaaand now Leo, brainwashed by Zodiark, claims the final plate for himself. And with Paradox gone once for all, the final act really begins now with the final opponent left to topple.

Chapter 149
What, just like the Final Day in Majora’s Mask? That would be a fitting parallel in this instance. All that’s left is for the sky to go blood red when night falls.

But this is a pretty cool sequence, where all the humans Shane encountered as a Ninetales throughout the story that he gave Z-Crystals to are bringing them out now for the final confrontation. Pretty nice callbacks to earlier chapters too! :quag:

I do have to laugh at Dragonite being the one to hold up the Z-Crystal instead of Kieran.
Except for Ortega, who'd put some weird pink filter and lots of 😱 emojis over his.
I will never not chuckle whenever actual emojis are used in-fic. :mewlulz:
She felt like such a fool. Yuna and the others had focused so much on dealing with Paradox, that they lost sight of the big picture. And now they were paying the ultimate price.
Well, focus on the bigger picture and Paradox would probably still be there with his dimension collapsing and takeover by terraforming. Couldn’t exactly ignore him now, could we?

And now time to get in contact with the Overseers directly and for our heroes to make their case directly to them. Or maybe Shane will understand and we can go straight to knocking Zodiark for two.

And now for the two Ambyfic main protags to meet face-to-face at last. Just a pity it had to be in world-ending circumstances like these. :sadbees:

At least the non-divine section of the army still have a vital job to do. Speaking of which, Nikki - arguably the most central non-divine character of our heroes - still has that resolution with Shane to sort out, given their previous interactions when they were human…

Now for the actual journey to Ginnungagap, but there’s no way of getting through it safe and sound if Dreamweaver has anything to say about it.
It looked as though Shane might try deflecting them with his tail, only for the crystals to suddenly change course and veer toward a grayscale pyroar. Pyroar exploded into black and white mist. Then a grayscale necrozma brought a gray light blade forward and cleaved through the remaining shards.
Oh hi, Tama. Nice save there. :quag:
Yuna spotted Dreamweaver tracking their movements, only for a Moonblast to strike it right between its crystal eyes.

"Oh no you don't!" a golden xerneas cried.
And Angel too! :veelove: All of Shane’s allies coming together for the greater cause here, understanding full well the peril Zodiark poses to the world while also fighting to preserve the world of Radiance and the people on it.

Diamond and Noctum doing a nice team up attack there, great to see :quag:
A familiar figure stood in front of the star.

"Zodiark!" Widget barked. The cosmic silvally landed on the floor, growling.
And there he is…the final great obstacle of the story. :screm:

I do really love these pre-battle declarations against Zodiark, with all our main divine characters standing up against the greatest threat to the universe.
The sky rippled. An intense pressure filled the air. Then the sun behind Zodiark erupted, flooding the room with brilliant light.
And with that, the final battle begins.

Conclusion
And that’s the end of that. Caught up for now, and this time I intend to remain caught up.

I really like how the finale’s coming together. Great build up with getting to confront Paradox and indeed the climactic battle against him and his Iron Conqueror, complete with a quick final phase of him against Gene, the rebel leader who’s battled him for ages by now, and Widget, who started out as a pawn for him and saw the light once captured by Yuna and co. And then, he was killed by Leo, who in turn was brainwashed by Zodiark and who our heroes now may have to face in battle as Zodiark’s pawn. Things certainly took a turn there, even if it was well foreshadowed. :unquag: Much as I love to hate the guy, I can’t help but credit him for taking advantage of the chaos in that moment.

It’s also nice to see more of Shane, with him playing a more pivotal role to the plot while not supplanting any of our main heroes, merely a background player that’s helping to hold down greater attacks by Whispers. And yeah, while he was one of the causes of the conflict, kudos to him for trying to keep things together and be the most notable Overseer to hopefully eventually vouch for the world of Eternatus to be restored in a new fashion.

I also like the wrap up of some character arcs, namely Arianna who I wasn’t even really expecting to get sympathy evoked from, and also Shimmer finally admitting his love for Igneous which ends up being the thing that snaps our resident Grovlazzle out of his butterfly-controlled haze. Not to mention the tense race against the cell to prevent our heroes from being dissolved into batteries to serve Paradox, against a backdrop from which the Deoxys emperor had put everyone into a precarious situation by warping the key members off to various dimensions.

This was a very good read. Looking forward to seeing how the final battle against Zodiark’s gonna kick off. :quag:

Chapter 150: Phenomenal Affirmation

Brilliant%20Star%20%5BCover%20150%5D%20-%20Raph.png

Yuna zigzagged through the air, barely dodging multicolored lasers that carved the ground, leaving gaping fissures that vented bursts of platinum energy. Reverse Time surprisingly kicked in, letting Yuna conjure Giratina limbs to strike at Zodiark. However, they only managed to hit a crystal shield. When time resumed flowing normally, Zodiark smirked at the dragapult.

"You know nothing of true creation," he boasted. Zodiark raised his arms high. Two plates spun around one another, conjuring a dialga that blasted Yuna with a point-blank Roar of Time.

She struck the ground and skipped across it, grunting in pain with every bounce. Yuna spun to a stop, vision swirling. She could barely make out Diamond and Noctum trying their own Roar of Time and Spacial Rend combo. A blue-purple explosion quickly vanished within the Pixie Plate, which returned to orbiting around Zodiark.

An arm grabbed Yuna and got her back in the air.

"Not a good start," Gene growled, scanning the area.

Amidst all the bright and colorful lights, Zodiark remained floating on the other end of the room. Golden sigils appeared overhead. They rained bolts of electric Judgment on Diamond and Noctum. The cosmic charizard managed to Phantom Warp past them, but Diamond's Protect couldn't hold up.

"Crap!" Gene surged forward, black energy trailing from his crystals. Yuna flew after him. She spotted Widget, in miraivally form, frantically flying overhead, taking Thunderbolt potshots at Zodiark. Each bolt harmlessly plinked off a crystal shield.

While Gene dove down to recover Diamond, Yuna shot six Dragon Darts toward Zodiark. He traced a circle with his right hand. A brilliant burst of fairy energy snuffed out her blow.

But Yuna was counting on that. She kicked her legs out as she flew. Two Giratina legs tried to squish Zodiark from either side. They slammed into his crystal shield. Yuna focused on her griseous core to draw out energy. A giant Giratina wing slammed into Zodiark's shield, shattering the crystals.

He tried retaliating with motes of pink fairy energy, but Yuna had another Giratina wing at the ready. It struck Zodiark from above, knocking him down enough for Noctum to hit his legs with his blue flames. And a Thunderbolt from Widget grazed Zodiark's right shoulder.

Zodiark teleported behind Yuna in a burst of multicolored light. Golden energy spread along his body. The small scuffs and marks their blows inflicted quickly disappeared.

Yuna's chest ectoplasm tightened. Had Zodiark healed himself?

"Do you still not realize how out of your depth you are, Yaldabaoth?" Zodiark said. "The blows you inflict? They will never truly exist. Not when I can alter fate as I see fit."

"Oh, step off it!" Gene shouted. "It's just a healing move!"

Three Shadow Balls flew in from Yuna's right, only to strike a new crystal shield. She punched the air. Two Giratina legs appeared to stomp the shield.

Diamond galloped past Yuna's left, slinging an Aura Sphere. It harmlessly bounced off the shield.

"Pathetic." Zodiark drifted higher in the air. "Prostrate yourselves before me like the tools you are."

He spun his arms around in a circle. The Dread Plate drifted closer to him. Black energy streamed toward the ground.

Yuna's breath left her. An intense pressure threatened to yank her out of the air. Zodiark— no, the black orb beneath him was getting closer! It was a black hole!

"Nnnnggggh! Flyyyyy!" the dragapult cried. She faced the other direction, whipping her tail up and down but failing to make progress away from the black hole's grip.

Even worse, black spheres formed in the air. Black Judgment bolts rained down indiscriminately. She was going to get hit! And sucked into the black hole!

Inhaling sharply, Yuna's Giratina wings appeared. They flapped at the air, breaking through the black hole's grip to carry her forward.

Noctum roared behind her. The black hole's grip suddenly stopped. Yuna turned around to find the cosmic charizard standing where the black hole had been, blue-purple mist trailing off his wings. Above him, Zodiark conjured black lances. He was going to skewer Noctum!

Yuna whipped her tail against nothing. Giratina's tail appeared and slammed Zodiark. While his shield blocked him, the tail knocked the Dread Plate away.

Zodiark teleported toward it. The plate rejoined the others rotating around him.

But black spears emerged from the ground, piercing through his shield.

"No you don't!" Gene surged into Zodiark, striking four times with his shadowed spoon before Phantom Warping down to dodge a point-blank golden blast from Zodiark's right hand.

Zodiark teleported back toward the center of the multicolored void. With a wave of his hand, gold light trickled over his body. It closed the blackened gashes Gene's spoon left on his starry body.

"Another feeble effort," he chided. "You will tire out soon enough. And then I shall claim vict—"

A large lightning bolt struck Zodiark before he could generate another shield. His body tensed up as static sparks lingered. Yuna stayed where she was, drawing fiery power from her griseous core. A reshiram specter appeared near Widget and spewed blue flames. Zodiark countered with watery lances that kept the Blue Flare at bay.

Gene managed to close the gap quickly, however. He slung black crescents toward Zodiark. Each knocked him back, leaving bits of black smoke behind. Then more blue fire followed from Yuna's right, courtesy of Noctum.

"We're still kicking, asshole!" Gene taunted, psychic spoon at the ready.

"Then I shall have to fix that," Zodiark said, raising both his arms. He teleported far above the group. The plates rotated around him faster as the Flame and Earth Plates hovered in front of him.

"Ahhhhh!"

Diamond's frightened whinny drew Yuna's attention down. Red-orange fissures raced across the ground. They spewed lava and fireballs.

Yuna bent her right arm and made a scooping motion against the air. A Giratina wing cradled Diamond and brought him over to the dragapult. Yuna wrapped the cosmic keldeo in her tail and flew up higher.

Beneath her, entire volcanoes sprouted from the fissures. Even more lava and fireballs erupted from them, filling the air with fire and brimstone.

"Hang on!" Yuna called, rolling right past a few fireballs, then banking left as another volcano sprouted beneath her.

"Useless." Zodiark's voice reverberated from high above her.

The Flame and Earth Plates sailed through the air. They spun around, stitching together two primal groudon to stand atop nearby volcanoes. They Erupted, adding to the volley of lava and fireballs.

"This is ridiculous!" Diamond said, flailing his legs in Yuna's grasp.

"I can see that!" She rolled right again, barely skirting the edge of a groudon's Eruption.

Reverse Time triggered, letting Yuna fire Dragon Darts at the nearby groudon.

"What the—" Diamond still had free movement. Perhaps because Yuna was holding him. The cosmic keldeo pointed his forehooves at Groudon and shot Hydro Pumps at it.

When Reverse Time wore off, Groudon melted away into a flow of lava. Yuna looked left and saw the other one disappearing, with Gene and Noctum turning their attention skyward.

The volcanoes vanished in streams of golden light. Zodiark reappeared in front of Yuna. A cannon styled after a golden arceus wheel materialized in front of him.

"Seriously?" Diamond squirmed in Yuna's grasp. "How disrespectful can this monster get?"

"It does look kind of tacky," Yuna mumbled.

"Your aesthetic tastes will not spare you." Zodiark snapped his fingers. The cannon fired a massive laser. Yuna managed to let go of Diamond so he could fall away from it, but couldn't escape into distortion fast enough. The beam blasted Yuna, knocking her back across the rainbow void.

"I got you!" Noctum called. Yuna grunted when her torso squished against Noctum's nebula belly.

"Thanks." Yuna pushed herself off the cosmic charizard.

"Heads up!" Gene shouted from ahead of them. Two yveltal flew past the mega mewtwo, escaping slashes from shadowy blades.

Both fired red and black beams toward Yuna. The dragapult ascended, skirting the blasts. Reverse Time triggered again. Yuna battered both yveltal with a Diamond Storm, shattering them into black and sky-blue energy that streamed across the rainbow void toward Zodiark.

"You cannot keep this up," Zodiark said, voice echoing all around Yuna. "Your stamina is limited, while mine is infinite. You cannot outpace creation its—"

Zodiark pivoted to swat away two incoming Shadow Balls from Gene, then pivoted left to deflect a Thunderbolt from Widget.

Yuna used the time to close the distance with Zodiark. She tried sending more diamonds through the air to at least force Zodiark's hand. However, they crumbled into dust before ever reaching him.

With a wave of his hand, Zodiark vanished in a flash of blue light. More arceus wheel cannons spawned in, unleashing different colored beams of light. Brown ones went for Widget. Black ones headed toward Yuna and Gene.

This time, however, the dragapult did manage to slip into the distortion. Her charge past the black lasers felt stronger than the previous times she used Shadow Force.

She caught sight of Zodiark near the ground. Yuna emerged from the shadows, funneling red and black chaos energy down. Zodiark's eyes briefly widened in surprise. He couldn't conjure a crystal shield fast enough.

The chaos energy struck. He staggered back a few steps. Yuna pressed the offensive with a flurry of Giratina leg jabs. Each blow forced Zodiark back a few steps.

But Zodiark quickly squared up his stance. He unleashed a pulse of purple ghostly energy that snuffed out Giratina's legs and blew Yuna back a couple of meters.

Zodiark then teleported several meters back. Shadow Balls and an Aura Sphere flew in from Yuna's left, hitting only empty air. Golden light threads weaved around Zodiark's body, removing the scuffs and divots from Yuna's strikes and restoring his pristine starry texture.

"Is it sinking in yet?" Zodiark said. He raised his right arm. The Splash Plate gravitated toward him. "Your defeat here was predetermined!"

He teleported several meters back. A large tidal wave rose up underneath him. Tall enough to sweep the group away no matter how high they could fly.

"I got this!" Noctum shouted. The cosmic charizard flew in front of Yuna. Blue-purple energy funneled along his arms from his starry wings.

"I think not," Zodiark scoffed. Pointed stones gathered in the air around Noctum.

Yuna swiped both her arms up. Giratina wings appeared and shielded Noctum from the rocks. Noctum then fired a zygarde-sized blue-purple crescent toward the advancing wall of water. His Spacial Rend split the wave apart, sending water cascading to the group's left and right.

To the dragapult's left, Gene and Widget fired black and yellow lightning at Zodiark. He teleported underneath the attacks. But Diamond quickly followed up with a Roar of Time. The swirling tachyons struck Zodiark, freezing him in place long enough for Yuna to hammer him into the ground with a Giratina leg, then knock him back further with a second leg when he bounced off the ground.

Zodiark froze in the midst of skipping back across the multicolored ground. Static flickered around him. He warped back several meters and, once again, looked completely unharmed. Zodiark smirked at her.

Yuna's tail curled up. They were getting nowhere. And while she wasn't tired yet, she knew Zodiark had a point. They couldn't keep this up.

"What do we do here?" she whispered, chest ectoplasm tightening around her griseous core.

Igneous dropped from the air. A Rock Blast sailed overhead, striking a jagged piece of metal rubble in the distance. He conjured Honedge and chucked it forward. It stuck in the green, bony skull of a marowak Whisper. Igneous curled his claws up. Honedge burst into flames. The Whisper exploded into green goo. A ball of faint white light drifted off toward the sky.

"What do you suppose is up with these things?" the grovlazzle asked, retreating toward Shimmer's side. "Are they spirits?"

"Maybe?" The ponytales hopped to Igneous' right and swept an Ice Beam along the ground. Some sort of ancient volcarona slipped on the ice that formed and ended up splayed out on its belly. This gave room for Shredder to jump from a stone slab and drive his glowing elbow right into the Whisper's back. It squelched and crunched beneath Shredder, ending up a green-white puddle. Another ball of light rose toward the sky.

"That's correct!" Vince skidded to a halt, in front of them, wings rolling up into antennae. His dewlap throbbed with the deep breaths he took. "Most Whispers are souls lost to Ginngungagap, corrupted by the energy within it. You had divine energy to protect yourselves. These souls didn't."

He pivoted right and curled up into a glowing orange wheel. His Collision Course rammed through two bisharp and a kingambit, splattering them into green goop. He returned toward Igneous and Shimmer and uncurled.

"And now Zodiark has them under his control." The purple koraidon's antennae drooped. "Oh, it's terrible! Who knows how many more he can summon?"

Threads of red and black static descended from the air. They struck the uneven stone ground ahead of the group, molding into green, goopy, ancient donphan.

"Great Tusk. Wonderful." Shoulders sagging, Vince looked left. "Nikki, keep your distance, they're part ground."

The toxtricity's brows raised. She scrambled up a pile of rubble.

"How long do we have to keep this shit up for?" Nikki asked, scanning for targets she could reasonably hit.

"As long as Yuna and the others are fighting Zodiark," Igneous said.

One Great Tusk curled into a ball and charged toward the grovalzzle. Vince met the charge with his Collision Course. A second stomped the ground, sending fissures racing forward.

Igneous' volcarona wings flared to life and carried him into the air. Shimmer's hooves pulsed with pink light. Telekinesis bolstered his jump to carry him over the fissures. He slung a Glacial Lance toward the Great Tusk herd. Ice exploded out, catching a handful of them off guard.

"Move in!" Ifrit cawed from a hundred meters ahead of Igneous.

Black flames swept across the Great Tusk, followed by an orange bolt ricocheting off them and ending with Quetzal booting the Great Tusk stalemated against Vince. The orange zapdos leaped up, leaving room for Jade and Shiva to swoop in. Freezing Glare and Aeroblast swept across the ground in a maelstrom of ferocious wind and psionics. When the attacks died down, nothing but green goo and balls of faint white light were left.

Jade landed in the middle of the goop, breathing heavily. The salugia tucked her wings in. "Haaaa... haaaa. This is... a lot more work... than I've ever had to do." Her tail flaps curled and uncurled. "Are we done yet?"

"Ha!" Shredder pointed over her shoulder. A couple of incineroar joined the obstagoon, taking fighting stances. "Far from it! I see more breaking through the others."

Igneous frowned. "Any updates from the healers?"

His X-transceiver crackled. Artemis' voice came through.

"It's a lot worse than when we were dealing with Paradox's forces," the milotic said. "We're getting overwhelmed over here. And some of the Whispers are spawning near the heal camp on the outskirts of the city. Cyril, Scarlett, and I are trying to hold 'em off, but we need help!"

"Damn it," Igneous muttered. "We don't have any rift access. And we need to fall back."

Shimmer galloped toward him. "Grishi!" the ponytales said. "Grishi can teleport us!"

Embers crackled on Igneous' head leaf. "Oh, duh! You're absolutely right!" He cupped his claws over his cheeks and shouted, "GRISHI!"

A second later, the zorotwo appeared. He clutched a few grubbin Whispers in his claws, which he squished together. Grishi let the green goop dribble off his claws.

"What need?" Grishi looked over his shoulder. "Very rough out there."

"The healers are in trouble," Igneous said. "We all need to regroup by them. And you're our lone teleporter."

Grishi's shoulder crystal pulsated. "Grishi see point. Grishi not like it. But Grishi see point." He raised one claw. "Give Grishi second."

He blipped away before Igneous could object, only to return a few seconds later with Zacian, Zamazenta, Xiao, Lin, and Jaeger. Grishi landed atop a pile of rubble, breathing heavily.

"Grishi... will warp... in groups."

"That's fine." Igneous pressed his claws against his right temple. "Everyone! Fall back toward the southern outskirts! We need to stay together and protect the healers!"

Grishi waved the grovlazzle over. He joined Nikki, Shimmer, and Valkyrie. Everything swirled around for a few seconds, then Igneous hit sandy ground on the outskirts of Dazzels.

No sooner had he done that then he heard roars ahead of him. A wailord Whisper lay in the middle of the road, spouting water at Yiazmat and her troops as they frantically flew around it. Over to the right, Guzzie and Guzmelda stomped along the wreckage of some sort of storage facility, tossing Whispers into their gaping maws and belching out balls of light that streamed toward the sky. Guzzie Junior rode on his mother's shoulder.

"Guzmelda takes out another one!" he shouted. "And the crowd goes wild! They crave more violence! More family-bonding bloodshed!"

Valkyrie took off running toward the wailord. Shimmer galloped after her, with Zacian and Zamazenta following suit the moment Grishi reappeared with them.

"Oh, thank goodness!" Artemis slithered toward them. "I thought they'd overrun us!" The milotic waved his tail like a fan. A sweaty cosmic zoroark jogged toward him. Cyril shook dust out of his mane.

"Yeah, this is wild." Cyril arced his back while taking deep breaths. "I'm a bit at a loss for what we're supposed to do. If the others aren't making progress with Zodiark, then he'll keep summoning Whispers, won't he?"

Igneous crossed his arms. "We can't say that for sure."

He heard shouts and looked over his shoulder. A Walking Wake had blown Shimmer and Valkyrie back with a burst of hot water. It whipped its tails around to knock Xiao and Lin away as they charged it down.

"But this isn't good," Igneous muttered, embers popping off his head leaf. "We need a way to turn the tide. To give them a second wind."

As he watched the others, he caught sight of Scarlett flying away from a bunch of minior Whispers. On the ground, Zamazenta vaulted Zacian into the air so she could destroy the Whispers with a single slash from her giant glowing sword.

Igneous' eyes widened. "Starlene!" He ran over to Nikki without a second thought. "We need Starlene!"

The toxtricity turned around. "Huh?"

"Starlene's singing!" Igneous waved his arm at Scarlett. "It powers people up. And we could really use that right now."

Nikki's gills throbbed. "Oh, shit, yeah!" She lightly thumped her chest. "Not just that... when Starlene and I played together in that mystery dungeon, we blew apart Xander's stupid flunkies. And they were totally powered by Whisper energy or whatever!"

She jumped up and down, waving frantically. "Oi, Scarlett! Get over here!"

Ahead of them, another Great Tusk had broken through the ranks. It barreled forward in a furious Rollout. Igneous conjured Honedge, ready to make a stand, when black flames, pink lasers, and a massive orange beam swept Great Tusk away. Ifrit, Shiva, and Jade landed where Great Tusk had been. Quetzal dashed over to join them, hopping in place from foot to foot.

Igneous relaxed. Scarlett landed between him and Nikki.

"What's up?" the dragonair looked between the two of them.

"We need Starlene to perform," Igneous said. "With Nikki. Like you guys did in that last mystery dungeon, apparently."

"Perform?" Scarlett's neck bauble flickered. She nodded. "Right. I was ready for that against Paradox. And this... is way bigger." She glanced at Nikki. "But what should we play?"

Nikki crossed her arms and scrunched her face up in thought. After a few seconds of silence, her mohawk grew and rippled faster.

"You remember that old song we drew up but never got the chance to play?" Nikki strummed a few air guitar chords.

Scarlett blinked, then raised a brow. "I... do. You really want to break it out now?"

"Can you think of a better time?" Nikki gestured to her right with both arms, where Zacian and Zamazenta combined to knock a large ursaluna Whisper back into some smaller azumarill and pyror Whispers.

The dragonair laughed nervously. "Point taken." She looked around. "Find Shredder to get us a drummer and then we'll get set up."

Igneous nodded. His volcarona wings flared to life and he took off toward where the others were fighting.

The grovlazzle wasn't sure whether this would work, but he knew they had to try. He could only hope the others could hold their own.

Yuna tumbled through the air. The others shouted frantically from ahead of her. When she steadied herself, she found arceus wheel cannons spawning in one after another. Each one unleashed a golden laser. Gene and Noctum used Phantom Warps to try and dodge, while Widget put Diamond on his back and rocketed away.

More wheels kept appearing, however. Filling the rainbow void with more and more golden lasers. Yuna dove down to dodge one. Reverse Time gave her a window to fly between two more of them. Then she turned on her side to slip past another two.

Yuna zigzagged past a few more lasers before spotting Zodiark ahead of her. She punched the air repeatedly. Giratina legs jabbed Zodiark, breaking through a crystal shield and forcing him back.

When Yuna's Reverse Time wore off, the arceus cannon onslaught died down. Yuna finished her counterattack with a Blue Flare gout. Zodiark warped a few meters backward.

"Loathsome pest." He brought the Spooky and Fist Plates close to him. Purple and orange energy spilled out onto the ground. Multiple marshadow emerged from the puddle and rushed Yuna down.

They didn't get far before a Hydro Pump came from Yuna's left, washing some of them away. Lightning rained down from above the dragapult, frying the wet marshadow. Then black spikes impaled them from the ground.

Yuna uppercut the air. A Giratina wing mimicked the gesture, knocking the Spooky and Fist Plates away from Zodiark.

He teleported a few meters behind Yuna. She spun around, firing Dragon Darts to maintain the offensive. Zodiark teleported even further back.

"When will you accept that you fight a losing battle?" he said. His plates revolved faster and faster around him.

"Never!" Yuna growled. "Because a life controlled by you isn't living!"

"My control will end everyone's suffering," Zodiark countered. "There is no reason to stand against it."

A black beam whizzed by Zodiark.

"That kind of control is suffering," Gene said. "You're just repackaging it as something else!"

Zodiark leered at the mega mewtwo. "You will die choking on your ignorance."

He warped a few meters back again and thrust his right arm down. The rainbow light rippling around the void trembled. Fractals of Zodiark's fledgling reality hurtled forward.

Gasping, Yuna tried to outmaneuver the fractals, but one clipped her tail as she flew up. It knocked her up into the path of another fractal, which struck her head on. Yuna spiraled out of the air, crashing to the rainbow ground.

Yuna's vision swam. Her ear frills rang. A burning pain lingered all over her body. That attack was awful. And Zodiark had kept it in his back pocket the entire time?

Was he just toying with them? He kept undoing any damage from their attacks. How were any of them supposed to stand against that?

The burning pain faded. A blurry blob appeared over Yuna.

"You okay?"

It was Widget, back in cosmic silvally form. His chitinous foreleg took shape as the stars in her vision faded. Yuna grabbed his foreleg and he helped her back up.

Noctum and Gene flew around Zodiark, taking shots with blue fire and Shadow Balls. On the ground, Diamond sidestepped a lightning bolt and fired a Secret Sword beam straight up from his horn.

"That one hurt," Yuna mumbled, stretching her arms out. "We're not doing well, are we?"

Sighing, Widget shook his head. "But we can't give up, right?"

"I know." Yuna slowly floated into the air. "What should we do? What can we do besides keep attacking?"

"I'm not sure." Widget shifted from cosmic silvally to eternavally and hovered up after her. "Maybe we gotta keep taunting him? Like back on Mount Coronet? If he loses his patience, he might slip up somehow."

"Worth a shot, I guess?" Shrugging, Yuna took off. But as she got closer to her teammates, Zodiark suddenly warped backwards.

"You will fall before me," he said. Zodiark raised his right hand, bringing the Earth and Stone Plates close to him. A giant stone wall erupted from the ground. Zodiark hovered behind him as it began to tip over.

"Not a chance!" Diamond bellowed. He pointed his horn forward and unleashed a Roar of Time, freezing the wall in place. Noctum then swooped in and cleaved the wall asunder with a brilliant Spacial Rend.

Yuna conjured a Giratina leg to hammer Zodiark from above. Though he conjured a crystal shield, the force still sent him down, giving Gene room to smack him with his shadowed spoon. Yuna followed up with another Giratina leg from behind. Zodiark's body lurched when he struck it.

"How long are you going to float there and blab about fate and futility?" she called, ready to fly around if Zodiark tried anything funny. "We're still here. You say you've got all this power, but we're not much worse for wear! I bet all that stuff about us tiring out is a bunch of nonsense!"

Zodiark was too busy fending off flames and black energy from Noctum and Gene to retort. A lightning bolt came in from overhead, but a bigger bolt from Zodiark snuffed it out.

"Yeah, cuz if we have some of the same divine power as you, then we can draw strength from the same stuff as you!" Yuna continued. She shot Dragon Darts toward him. The dreepy-shaped blasts snaked their way around her allies to strike Zodiark.

He warped a meter back. Swirling his arms around, Zodiark conjured golden lances that soared toward Yuna and her teammates. They all broke off in different directions, with Yuna climbing higher into the air. The spears missed. Reverse Time triggered. Yuna unleashed a flurry of punches, summoning Giratina limbs to strike Zodiark repeatedly.

"So, give up!" Yuna punctuated her shout with one final punch. A Giratina leg knocked Zodiark a meter back. His wheel was less golden and his starry body dimmer than before.

"Enough!" Zodiark thrust his arms apart. A distorted shockwave rippled out in all directions. There was nothing Yuna could do to dodge it, but the blow didn't hurt much. It simply pushed her away from Zodiark.

Golden light trickled across his body once again. His body's starry glow returned. His wheel regained its previous luster.

"Countless eons I have planned for this moment," Zodiark said. "To craft the perfect reality. But instead of a creation to admire, here you are. Profaning my work."

Scorn crossed Zodiark's face. "This farce has gone on long enough. You will witness the full might of creation."

His wheel glowed with platinum energy. Countless spectral arms appeared around him. Ten. Twenty. Hundreds.

Yuna's ectoplasm tightened. Her core dimmed.

Zodiark raised his real arms. His plates revolved faster and faster around him.

"Gaze upon my Thousand Arms!" he declared. "You shall fall before their splendor!"

He thrust his arms down, and the spectral arms descended upon Yuna and her teammates.

Chapter 150

And so we have reached 150, and man, was the road leading up to this chapter absolutely amazing! Gonna try for the TR 7th Anniversary Review Blitz with this, so this might be a little different than my previous comments/reviews
"Do you still not realize how out of your depth you are, Yaldabaoth?" Zodiark said. "The blows you inflict? They will never truly exist. Not when I can alter fate as I see fit."
"Reality can be whatever I want"
Alright Thanos, we get it. Yet despite all the power you seem to possess, you seem to not be able to handle fending off multiple Pokemon at the same time.
Following my joke above, I really like that Zodiark, even though he is the "ultimate power", he still struggles against the heroes. He was still born a normal human, so it seems he has trouble multitasking, and gets overwhelmed if multiple things at once happen. Guess that might be how Yuna and the others eventually overwhelm Zodiark, by outmaneuvering him?
"Is it sinking in yet?" Zodiark said. He raised his right arm. The Splash Plate gravitated toward him. "Your defeat here was predetermined!"
Fate doesn't exist! And even if it does, I'm sure Yuna and the others will stop at nothing to "smash that future!"
I'm curious if this also comes from Hands of Creation. I know the Overworld comes from that story, but does the Ginngungagap come from there as well?
Ahead of them, another Great Tusk had broken through the ranks. It barreled forward in a furious Rollout. Igneous conjured Honedge, ready to make a stand, when black flames, pink lasers, and a massive orange beam swept Great Tusk away. Ifrit, Shiva, and Jade landed where Great Tusk had been. Quetzal dashed over to join them, hopping in place from foot to foot.
Hey, these three are finally together once again!
"You remember that old song we drew up but never got the chance to play?" Nikki strummed a few air guitar chords.
Well, given that this is an "all or nothing" fight, what better chance to give it your all, and go all out? Because if Zodiark wins, then there won't be a tomorrow
"I'm not sure." Widget shifted from cosmic silvally to eternavally and hovered up after her. "Maybe we gotta keep taunting him? Like back on Mount Coronet? If he loses his patience, he might slip up somehow."
Hopefully this works. Volo always seemed rather prideful and self assured, which carried over to Zodiark. And since Zodiark seems to have trouble multitasking, hopefully him slipping up provides the characters the opportinities they need
His wheel glowed with platinum energy. Countless spectral arms appeared around him. Ten. Twenty. Hundreds.
Oh no...
The twenty-first Major Arcana is known as The World or, in Crowley's Thoth deck, The Universe. In the upright position it represents assured success, recompense, voyage, or a change of place. In the reverse position it represents inertia, stagnation, and permanence.
I really love how this tarot card represents Zodiark and his mentality. He sees himself as righteous, his cause as just, and he cannot fail. But the characters see his Eternaverse as a stagnant reality, where no one can truly live. I guess what I'm trying to say is I love how each position represents the corresponding view of the Eternaverse for each side. For Zodiark, it is success, but for the heroes, it is stagnation.

I really enjoyed reading this chapter. Once again, the action was incredibly well written yet easy to follow and understand. I didn't notice any big issues in terms of pacing, structure, or grammer (Only mistake I saw was an accidental misspelling of Pyroar as Pyror lol). This story has been such a fun one to follow throughout the years, and I cannot wait to see how everything ends. All I can say is that I hope the characters get the happy endings they so desperately deserve, and kudos! 💙

Chapter 151: Phenomenal Uncertainty

Encore%20%5BCover%5D%20-%20Raph.png

Yuna frantically flew through the air, intense howling winds drowning out her cries for her allies. Spectral arms slammed down behind her. Others closed in on the dragapult. She tightened her ectoplasm and whipped her tail in a desperate attempt at moving faster.

But she soon found herself staring down an oncoming rainbow fractal. Yuna dove into distortion. Her Shadow Force carried her safely past the fractal. When she emerged from it, Yuna spun around, frantically conjuring Giratina limbs to try and stop Zodiark's divine arms.

She couldn't win the stalemate. The blue-violet arms broke through Giratina's legs and slammed her triangular head. Yuna tumbled back. Though everything spun, rocky spires lay ahead of her. Ready to pierce through her ectoplasm.

"Nrrrrrrggggggh!" Yuna fired Dragon Darts. The recoil pushed her up just enough to avoid the spikes.

"Do you surrender now, Yaldabaoth?" Zodiark asked, projecting his voice across the rainbow void.

Yuna steadied herself. She spun left repeatedly, avoiding a dozen divine arms. Reverse Time triggered, but Yuna couldn't locate Zodiark to counterattack. She couldn't even see her teammates! The best she could do was put more distance between herself and the divine arms onslaught.

When Reverse Time faded, Yuna shouted, "Never!" She took another breath. "Leo! You have to wake up! You have to fight this!"

It was a desperate plea. But what else was Yuna supposed to do here?

"You waste your breath, Yaldabaoth," Zodiark taunted. Countless divine arms traced golden runes across the sky.

Golden energy beams filled the air. There were so many that there was nothing Yuna could do to avoid them. One hammered her down into the ground. The rainbow light felt surprisingly slimy against her ectoplasm.

Yuna tried to get off the ground, but a sudden unseen force dragged her along the ground. She caught sight of another black hole in the middle of the rainbow void. Face scrunching up, Yuna forced herself to fly away.

However, the pull was far too strong. She got closer and closer and closer until—

Nothing. The force suddenly stopped. Yuna flew away frantically. She stole a glance back to see several divine arms swatting Gene out of the sky like an overgrown bug. Zodiark had several arms crafting a giant Walking Wake to crush Gene from above.

Fortunately, Diamond skidded to a halt underneath and fired a Roar of Time upward. It froze Zodiark in place just long enough for Noctum to fly around him. Thin glowing lines crisscrossed around Zodiark and his divine arms. The full-powered Spacial Rend shattered the air around Zodiark. Countless divine arms crumbled while Zodiark staggered back along the air. His wheel cracked.

"Do you think this matters?" he scoffed, quickly regaining his smirk. Zodiark warped behind Noctum.

"Look out!" Yuna cried. She thrust her hands forward. A Giratina wing wrapped Noctum up and tossed the cosmic charizard away from a storm of boulders. They hurt Yuna's arms when they struck the wing.

When the boulders stopped falling, all of Zodiark's Thousand Arms reformed. More golden light healed the chips and cracks from Noctum's Spacial Rend.

"You are outmatched," Zodiark said. He floated in place, watching as his divine arms went after Yuna's teammates. The dragapult kept her distance, braced to dodge whatever he threw at her.

"Exhaustion is setting in," Zodiark continued. "Once again, you bring this suffering upon yourselves." He extended his right arm toward Yuna. "Offer yourself to me now, Yaldabaoth. Your chaos will allow me to repel these Overseers. And then my Eternaverse shall spread across reality unchallenged."

A pulse of rainbow light rippled out from Dreamweaver. Shane crossed his four wings. A golden Protect blunted the strike. Nihil Lights and multicolored blasts immediately pelted Dreamweaver in retaliation. The crystal arceus didn't even flinch from the strikes.

Shane flapped his wings to put some distance between himself and Dreamweaver. Something faint tugged at the back of his mind. Multiple somethings, in fact.

The necrozma knew what this was. His Z-Crystals called to him. But there was interference! He couldn't answer their call like this!

He looked at Dreamweaver. Was it the one responsible? It was hard to tell with everything going on.

Three crystal diamonds spawned in the air. Dreamweaver shot rainbow beams into the diamonds, which refracted them to fill the air with lasers. Shane was far enough to easily dip down and avoid them.

Various Overseers weaved through the beams, trying their own attacks. A couple of mega zygarde fired Nihil Lights from the left. A mega mewtwo X tossed Shadow Balls at Dreamweaver's face. Two lunala fired Moongeist Beams from the right. Tama flew below Dreamweaver, hurling a Photon Geyser into Dreamweaver's crystal belly.

Nothing phased Dreamweaver. It flung crystal shards around to force the other Overseers back. Tama vanished in a ripple of light...

"Shane!"

"Gah!"

... And reappeared beside his gold counterpart.

"Nothing's happening!" the gray necrozma growled. "We're not making any headway against this thing."

Blue and purple spread in Shane's rainbow eyes. "I'm aware," he said.

"You told me you had a plan!" Tama barked, tail lashing the air.

"I know!"

"You had me stick my neck out and ask the Top Overseer for the benefit of the doubt!" Tama continued. He pointed his lower wings toward Dreamweaver. The crystal arceus spun around, leaving a trail of crystal spikes in its wake that the various Overseers scrambled to avoid.

"I don't see much doubt benefitting," Tama said. "Do you?"

"No." Shane twirled his right upper wing in a circle. A Prismatic Laser raced forward to destroy a crystal asteroid heading for both necrozma.

"Then what are we doing here?"

"I'm working on it!" Shane said.

Tama facepalmed with an upper wing.

Colors swirled around in Shane's rainbow eyes. "Look, my Z-Crystals are calling me, but something's interfering!" His tail undulated back and forth. "I dunno what, but I need to connect with those Z-Crystals to get things moving."

"Great." Tama's grayscale body dimmed. "Wonderful, even. We're completely screwed!"

"Just keep stalling for me," Shane pleaded. He flapped his wings to move further back. "I need to concentrate!"

"Then hurry up!" Tama flew forward, tossing silver Photon Geysers past some zygarde and ho-oh Overseers to strike Dreamweaver's chest.

Shane kept moving back. Dreamweaver's attention remained on the Overseers close to him.

Focus. He brought his four wings together, wrapping them around two of his crystal chest spikes.

Shane concentrated on the tingling in the back of his head. It drew his attention in different directions across Ginnungagap. Which made sense. The plates from POV-2020 had gotten scattered in several different worlds.

Wait! What was that?

Something else tugged on Shane's mind. Coming from POV-2020 itself. It was faint, but Shane could sense it despite the strange psychic static around the world. And it was... energizing?

What was going on down there?

XxX

Igneous somersaulted in mid-air, dodging a tornado and retaliating with several fireballs. They disrupted the ancient salamence Whisper, leaving room for Zacian to slam pink fairy energy into it. She pushed off its crumbling green body and leaped toward an oncoming Great Tusk that Zamazenta kept at bay, bashing it back repeatedly with his glowing head.

"How's it going back there?" the grovlazzle called. He spun around in a Fiery Dance. All that remained of nearby smaller Whispers were sizzling, bubbling green piles.

"We're, um, making progress!" Scarlett responded. Some speaker feedback followed, making Igneous wince.

He regained his focus, conjuring Honedge and swooping down to buzz toward a bunch of diglett and dugtrio Whispers. Igneous slashed furiously, cleaving through the ones around him.

A flicker of pink to his left made Igneous rocket back into the air. Seconds later, a Freezing Glare swept up the remaining Whispers. Balls of light evaporated into the air.

"Keep it up, then, Scarlett," Igneous said. "These things aren't that tough."

"Yes, but there's a lot of them!"

Shimmer galloped past Igneous' left. A Glacial Lance shot forward. It embedded into a hulking Snorlax Whisper, then erupted, spreading ice and green goop everywhere. Shimmer barely managed to leap over it.

"Ugggh, if we survive this, I'm spending an entire day in the shower!" the ponytales said, kicking his hind hooves to get the goo off them. "No, scratch that! A week's worth of spa days!"

He leveled his horn at charging urshifu Whispers. Psychic ripples slowed them down, enough for Dragon Darts and Dragon Pulses to rain on them from above.

"Hold the line!" Yiazmat barked. She swooped up and to the left. Salamence, dragonite, and other dragapult followed behind her. More blue-purple dragon energy rained down from the air, striking at a nearby cluster of electrode Whispers.

Back on the ground, Shimmer snorted out ice tufts. "I'm holding! I'm holding!"

Igneous landed beside him and spat Bullet Seeds ahead of them. They pelted an ancient-looking magneton Whisper's top eye. It sent wayward sparks out to its sides. They harmlessly washed over Valkyrie, who stomped the ground. An Earthquake tore the Whisper apart, and even knocked over a few farigiraf Whispers ahead of the group. Grishi appeared above them, blew them apart with Dark Pulses, then teleported away.

"I can agree on the spa day," the grovlazzle grunted. He gripped his right shoulder with his left claws and slowly rotated his right arm. "This is hella tiring. They just keep coming, even as we get rid of them."

"And these are the ones breaking past the pirates and Medicis." Shimmer tilted his head up slightly to observe the space pirate ships blasting streets obscured by flaming buildings ahead of them.

"Look alive!" Valkyrie shouted ahead of them.

Another Great Tusk barreled toward them. Igneous' wings reappeared as he weighed the possibility of trying to fly Shimmer out of the way.

Fortunately, Xiao and Lin darted in front of them. With a flurry of punches from the former and a single punch from the latter, Great Tusk exploded into green slime. Another spirit drifted off toward the sky.

"Heh heh." Xiao stretched his arms out. "Haven't had a workout like this in ages!"

"Don't slack off." Lin ran right, beckoning the other urshifu to follow. "There's more work to be done."

They dashed toward Zacian and Zamazenta, who bounced back and forth between ancient volcarona and ancient salamence Whispers.

Shimmer slouched slightly. "I don't suppose we could get Artemis or Arianna to bring us some elixirs, could we?"

Starlene%20Angy%20by%20sketchygarden.png

"We're ready!"

Scarlett's voice came through the X-transceiver. Igneous turned around, realizing he'd put a bit of distance between himself and the staging area. Shredder pointed to Scarlett, Starlene, Nikki, and a rillaboom and waved Igneous over.

The grovlazzle nudged Shimmer. "Let's fall back," he said. He jogged across the sandy ground with the ponytales right behind him.

In lieu of proper speakers, Starlene had linked herself up with glowing pink threads to not only Nikki and Rillaboom, but Cid as well. The orbeetle hovered in place, clearly miffed with the setup.

"You guys ready to rock?" the obstagoon raised his paws and made metal horns with his claws.

"Hell yeah!" Nikki clapped her hands together. Sparks crackled between them, coalescing into her lightning guitar. More pink threads appeared to tether it to Cid's head.

"This isn't going to hurt me, is it?" Cid tittered.

Shredder waved him off. "We've done this before. It'll be fine!"

"Forgive me if I don't share your confidence." Cid's spots flickered asynchronously. "You're going to take my energy!"

"Then we'll cure you with a pint when we're through here." Laughing, Shredder thumped his chest. "On me!"

The ground rumbled ahead of them, where more Whispers of various sizes tried advancing past their allies. Igneous spotted several ancient-looking Whispers in the mix.

"Whatever you're doing, hurry it up!" the grovlazzle said.

Nikki locked eyes with Scarlett, then Starlene. They nodded, then looked at Rillaboom. He clapped his drumsticks together.

"A-one! A-two! A-one, two, three!"

Nikki%20shred%20by%20fwicksart.png

The toxtricity began to strum chords on her lightning guitar. Energy funneled through the pink lines. Cid dropped out of the air. Igneous and Shimmer raced over to him, only to collectively let out a breath when they saw he was still awake.

That was when Starlene began singing.

"When the daemon heart is crying
And the blood is gushing bright
Raise up your bat for the burning fight!"

Embers crackled along Igneous' back. A strange tingle ran all the way down to the grovlazzle's tails. What was this feeling?

Starlene%20Rave%20by%20Ferdy.png

"When the hope is slowly dying
And your future's lost its rights
Raise up your bat and face the fright!"

"It's working!" Shimmer cheered. The ponytales jumped around excitedly while Igneous looked in confusion.

Then he spotted the goopy green explosions up ahead of him. Whispers bursting apart by the dozens, giving Valkyrie and the various legends a breather from the constant onslaught.

"Let's knock 'em dead into the niiiiiiiiiiiight!"

This time Igneous saw the musical shockwave ripple out in all directions. It swept away dozens of flying-type Whispers, including a few large ones whose species Igneous didn't recognize.

XxX

"What the hell is this?"

Tama's voice echoed in Shane's head. The grayscale necrozma stopped flying corkscrew loops far in the distance and looked toward the distorted ripples symbolizing POV-2020.

"Am I losing my mind?" he said. "Why do I hear music?"

Shane heard it, too. An electric guitar solo. Catchy enough on its own.

But better than that, as the music kept playing, it got louder. And the tingling in Shane's head grew with it.

"Come follow me into the dark
With your heart as the ark
Which shall shine you the way!"

Dreamweaver must have noticed the music, too. Because it finally moved, turning its crystal head toward POV-2020's entrance. Its body sparked with energy. Multicolored lasers flew out in all directions.

"Because I'm with you in the dark
With your heart as my mark
Which shall guide you the way through the waaaaaves!"

The Overseers in front of Shane fended off the lasers. All the Thousand Waves, Sacred Fires, and Moongeist Beams filling the air were even brighter than before. The three solgaleo that slammed into Dreamweaver in unison did so with far more force.

"It's a group-wide second wind!" Angel proclaimed, though Shane nearly tuned her out, because his body pulsated with multicolored light.

"Come follow me into the dark
With your heart as the ark
Which shall shine you the way!"

"It's ready!" Shane cried. He beat his wings and flew forward as fast as he could. As the necrozma flew, he stretched his mind out, grabbing hold of the invisible threads that had tickled the back of his head this entire fight.

"Because I'm with you in the dark
With your heart as my mark
Which shall guide you the way through the waaaaaves!"

"CLEAR A PATH FOR ME!" Shane bellowed.

Dreamweaver locked eyes with Shane. It spawned two crystals, only for two of the solgaleo to break them apart with blazing Sunsteel Strikes.

"When the daemon heart is crying
And the blood is gushing bright
Raise up your bat for the burning fight!"

Shane's light pulsated faster. Brighter. He was sure the threads were visible to the various Overseers now.

And to Dreamweaver, too. Because it fired a spear of light into the air. The Judgment bolts that emerged aimed behind Shane.

"When the hope is slowly dying
And your future's lost its rights
Raise up your bat and face the fright!"

But the spears suddenly veered right, where Tama absorbed the blows with a sparkling shield. Angel then galloped through the air. Vines of golden light restrained Dreamweaver's forelegs.

"Let's knock 'em dead into the niiiiiiiiiiiight!"

Shane suddenly stopped. He spread his four wings out. The multicolored light coalesced around his top chest spike, as did the threads that were connected to the back of his head.

Though Dreamweaver tried to attack, Angel's restraints and the other Overseers' blows kept it dazed enough for Shane to fire a massive Prismatic Laser straight into Dreamweaver's chest.

Its crystal body cracked, allowing the light threads to pass through. Shane flapped his wings to head toward Tama and Angel.

"Now what happens?" the golden xerneas asked, dispelling the golden tendrils.

"Now we press the attack," Shane said. "If this worked... then I'm going to get a Light That Burns the Sky ready."

Tama's gray light frazzled. His grayscale eyes rippled in alarm. "For what?!"

As Shane flew away from them, he called, "To destroy Zodiark's body!"

XxX

Yuna crashed into the rainbow ground and awkwardly skipped across it. Before she could even come to a stop, an arceus wheel cannon appeared and blasted her with a golden beam, driving her into a small crater.

Groaning, the dragapult tried to push herself up to no avail. Explosions filled the air in front of her. Her teammates struck the ground in various spots, all rolling back in different directions. Smoke trailed off Widget and Diamond's bodies. Noctum's starry tail flame was tiny. Gene's shoulder crystals looked ready to break apart.

In a flash of golden light, Zodiark appeared in the middle of the rainbow void. The plates revolved and oscillated around him. His Thousand Arms hung over Yuna and her teammates, ready to strike.

"And thus, we reach the fated ending," Zodiark declared. He clasped his hands together. His divine arms punched downward in unison.

Yuna desperately threw up a Protect shield. It barely held firm against the glowing fists, as well as shockwaves from the ones that punched the ground.

"Your... pathetic whimper of resistance is meaningless, Yaldabaoth," Zodiark chided, raising up his divine arms. Yuna could see her teammates were still in one piece, too.

"It's, nngggh, not meaningless." Grunting, Yuna tried to push herself up. She could only prop up her head, so she settled for shouting, "Wake up, Leo! You can't let Zodiark... use you like this!"

Zodiark smirked. "Your words cannot reach him. Your 'son' is gone. There is only a tool for me to wield." He held up his right arm. "As I shall soon wield you."

"That's not true!" Yuna lifted her head a bit more. "Leo, I know you're still in there! C'mon! We said... we'd put a stop to this... together!"

"Your last words... screaming into the void." Zodiark teleported higher into the air. He raised his arms up. "A fitting end to your pathetic tale."

The Thousand Arms came together. A white-hot fireball formed in the center of them. A star giving off brilliant light as it grew larger and larger and larger.

"Though you held on longer than I anticipated, at last, your inevitable demise is upon you!" Zodiark proclaimed.

Yuna dragged herself across the ground, still unable to get into the air. She lost sight of her teammates amidst the flames and bright white light.

"Burn away, Yaldabaoth!"

"Leo, please!" Yuna screamed. The dragapult curled up, conjuring a Protect in a desperate attempt to ward off the encroaching flames.

... And suddenly the heat died out. Yuna lowered her Protect shield to find Zodiark's growing star evaporating away. In its place, water gushed out of an open rift.

"What?" Zodiark looked down. Surprise flashed across his face. "What's going on here?"

"Wowzers! This, uh, looks like a lot, huh?"

Yuna found enough strength to push her head up. That voice...

"Kieran?!"

The rift stayed open. More water coalesced around where Zodiark was. His divine arms punched the water tornadoes but failed to break them apart. The water picked up some of the arms and flung them around into one another.

After a few deep breaths, Yuna found herself able to float back into the air. She spotted Kieran and a dragonite inside the rift. Blue energy poured out from Dragonite, fueling the water tornadoes.

"Hey!" Kieran glanced at Yuna. "I don't know what exactly is happening here, but Leo helped me remember what pokémon battling should mean to me!" He looked toward Zodiark. "So, whatever important thing he's wrapped up in, he's not allowed to lose!"

"Arrrrrrooooooooo!"

Zodiark glared at the rift. "Begone, foolish child!"

He sent a dozen divine arms toward the rift, only for a second rift to open beside Kieran's. A giant steel drill emerged and pierced right through them. The drill swooped up, heading toward Zodiark before bursting apart into dozens of smaller drills that scattered in different directions.

A yawn came out of the new rift. Yuna spotted Molayne sitting atop a metagross, who glowed with gray energy.

"Sheesh, this looks exhausting." Molayne rubbed the back of his head. "But I remember you guys. Didn't back down even with that volcanic eruption filling the sky."

The water tornadoes surrounding Zodiark amplified the corkscrewing drills' momentum, helping them tear through more of his divine arms.

"And Seifer." Molayne looked around. His gaze fixed toward his right, where Diamond was staggering back to his feet. "I don't know if you're here, but I just want to say thanks. I've got an interview at a school next week. And I've got a good feeling about it."

Diamond lifted his head up. There was a flicker of recognition in his eyes.

"Enough of this nonsense!" Zodiark snarled. He conjured half a dozen arceus wheel cannons. "I am in control here!"

Before any of them could fire multicolored beams toward the rifts, pink ripples spread across them. And they all shattered in unison. Gasping, Zodiark staggered back in midair.

"Yeeeeeehaaaaaaaw!" came a voice from a third rift. A pink one holding Liza and three beldum. Pink energy streamed out from it, amplifying the water tornadoes and steel drills already filling up the air.

"What are you all doing here?" Yuna said. She had no idea why this was happening. Where had they gotten such power from?

"Ah, that voice!" Jim pivoted to Yuna. His eye teared up. "Best friend! It's me, Jim! I'm here to help you, as only a best friend can d—"

"Yes, yes, yes!" Liza spun Jim back around. "We get it! We get it! Let's focus on helping to stop the end of the world!"

She looked over her shoulder. "You guys saved my bacon back in LaRousse. I'm returning the favor!" Liza nodded at Yuna. "Because I've gotta see Tate again. And that can't happen if the world ends!"

No sooner had Liza finished talking than a fourth rift opened. Before Zodiark could try an attack, dark energy flowed out of the rift. A black hole opened underneath Zodiark, sucking up divine arms that hadn't yet been struck by a water tornado or steel drill.

Jessie and James appeared in the rift, with a seviper in between the two of them.

"To protect the world from devastation!"

"To unite all peoples within our nation!"

Wobbuffet popped up with Meowth standing on his head.

"Forget da motto!" Meowth said. "We're doing dis so we can get our revenge on dat mewtwo one day!"

He looked left, toward a bewildered Gene. "See! He recognizes us!"

"Yuna, what the hell is going on here?" Gene looked between Team Rocket and the growing number of lingering attacks around Zodiark. Over half of his Thousand Arms were missing now.

"I have no idea!" The dragapult flew between the rifts, eyeing the different colored energy streams funneling out from them. They felt warm. Like the saunas made using heat from Aeon's volcanoes.

Up in the air, Zodiark spun his right arm in a circle. Golden sigils appeared in the air. Lances formed in the middle of them. Zodiark thrust his right arm down.

A massive lightning bolt flew in from Yuna's right. It erupted in a surge of blue and yellow. Yuna briefly saw a squawking Widget tripping over his legs backpedaling away from a new, yellow rift.

"Good job, Pikachu! Keep it up!"

The boy standing in the new rift cheered for his pikachu as electricity funneled out into the water tornadoes. They flung lightning around, vaporizing more of Zodiark's divine arms.

"It's Ash!" Widget got back to his feet, crest fanning out. "What are you doing here?"

"An ice ninetales gave me a new Z-Crystal," Ash said. "He said I'd need to use it to help the people who saved me!"

Bahamut appeared beside Widget, brow furrowed. "An ice ninetales told you this?"

"How is this possible?!" Zodiark tried desperately to put the psychic-electric-water tornadoes out. But every time it seemed like a gold spark of energy would dissolve one, the tornadoes managed to stand their ground. Multicolored light continued spilling into them from the open rifts.

"How are you outpacing my ability to alter phenomena?" Zodiark said. He aimed three dozen of his divine arms at the rifts and launched them.

But another rift opened underneath Yuna. Sudden cold air made the dragapult's tail shrivel up. She rolled to her left right before a massive iceberg jutted out of the rift. It pierced through Zodiark's divine arms, then upended him. Zodiark fell on his back, though he remained suspended in midair.

The tornadoes picked up chunks of ice to add to the mixture of water, lightning, and ESP. They tore through more of Zodiark's divine arms. Fine golden mist filled the air.

Yuna tried peering past the base of the iceberg, but there was too much mist in the air for her to make out who was there at first. Then a figure appeared, and pink ripples cleared the mist, revealing Gene floating there, looking at some sort of lanky ice cat with icicle saber teeth.

"In the past... I would've said to surrender and accept nothingness," he said, gazing at Gene. Ice still flowed from his body to fuel the iceberg. "But you showed me otherwise. So now I offer you my strength. Push the nothingness back. Let us both rebuild our homes."

Gene nodded. "You know it."

Zodiark had gotten back to his feet. Yuna swore he was saying something, but she couldn't hear it. Instead, she could faintly hear... music?

The vocals were too muffled, but Yuna recognized that electric guitar clear as day! That was Nikki's!

She looked around for the source of music. It wasn't coming from any of the rifts. Or any one spot in particular. Though distant, Yuna heard it all around her, even with the rush of elements sustaining the magic tornadoes.

A white flash drew her attention up. Zodiark had conjured another sun. No doubt to melt the giant iceberg.

However, instead of getting to hurl it at the iceberg, a giant fireball flew in from the left. It knocked Zodiark into his own sun. Then a flurry of giant orange fists followed, pummeling the sun to shrink it down. A torrent of poison and fairy energy followed, snuffing out the last of the sun and leaving room for another black hole to grab hold of Zodiark and spin him around like a rag doll.

Yuna looked left toward the rift to find a girl with red and blue hair. She hiked up her eevee backpack and nudged her glasses.

"Okay. Yeah." She squeezed the straps of her eevee backpack tightly. "That's a big freaky god monster up there. So, um..."

She cupped her hands around her cheeks. "Leo! It's time for my big anime power of friendship moment! Beat this guy so my friends and I can keep having fun together!"

An espeon, sylveon, and umbreon jumped around her in excitement.

Zodiark freed himself from the black hole's grasp. His face was a mixture of scorn and confusion.

"This... this is nothing." Zodiark waved his right arm. Golden light once again healed his injuries and restored the vibrant glow of his wheel.

"It doesn't matter what desperate tricks you pull!" Zodiark raised higher into the air. "Because there is nothing you can do to hurt me! Do you understand? Nothing!"

Yuna saw gold and silver sparks flicker inside all the water tornadoes. Her griseous core flashed once. Her chest ectoplasm tightened.

Then, from behind, she heard Noctum shout, "Get out of there!"

She darted back toward Noctum the moment she saw the rifts, and all the energy they produced, trembling. Yuna made it to Noctum at the same time as the rest of her teammates.

Then, a second later, a dome of gold and silver energy swallowed up all the attacks generated by the rifts.

"Holy shit!" Gene threw an arm up over his face.

"Good heavens!" Diamond reared up on his hind legs, whinnying.

"Aaaaah!" Widget's starcloud neck ruff puffed out.

"Whoa!" Noctum stared at the explosion in wonder.

"Hmph." Bahamut conjured his light sword. "Don't lower your guard."

But amidst the brilliant light, Yuna could just barely make out Zodiark lurching in midair. And a silhouette was galloping toward them.

A four-legged silhouette, with a distinct wheel around its torso.

Before she even saw the starry pelt, Yuna flew forward, shouting, "LEO!"

Path of Valor Almanac
The song performed by Nikki and Starlene is Toby Fox's "Raise Up Your Bat" from Deltarune Chapter 3. I originally had a different song in mind, until the game released last year and I saw the lyrics.

Chapter 151

"Do you think this matters?" he scoffed, quickly regaining his smirk. Zodiark warped behind Noctum.
A facade that's likely to crack as easily as your golden wheel Zodiark!
Something else tugged on Shane's mind. Coming from POV-2020 itself. It was faint, but Shane could sense it despite the strange psychic static around the world. And it was... energizing?
Now I'm curious if Shane knows about the reincarnated souls of POV-2070, and their similarities to his friends. Because if he isn't, encountering Nikki for the first time will probably give him quite a shock
"Ugggh, if we survive this, I'm spending an entire day in the shower!" the ponytales said, kicking his hind hooves to get the goo off them. "No, scratch that! A week's worth of spa days!"
I'm sure Igneous will be more than happy to join you in that shower Shimmer

"We're ready!"
Locked-In Latias (Lockedtias?)
The toxtricity began to strum chords on her lightning guitar. Energy funneled through the pink lines. Cid dropped out of the air. Igneous and Shimmer raced over to him, only to collectively let out a breath when they saw he was still awake.
The song choice is both on the nose and absolutely awesome at the same time
"Let's knock 'em dead into the niiiiiiiiiiiight!"
I read the entire song with the song playing behind it, and the lyrics you wrote fit wonderfully :veelove:
"Now we press the attack," Shane said. "If this worked... then I'm going to get a Light That Burns the Sky ready."

Tama's gray light frazzled. His grayscale eyes rippled in alarm. "For what?!"
So how does Light that Burns the Sky compare to moves like Judgement or Nihil Light? Nihil Light was fired pretty frequently by the other Overseers, yet Tama didn't seem alarmed by that.
Before she even saw the starry pelt, Yuna flew forward, shouting, "LEO!"
LET'S GO!

I love how the characters from the worlds Yuna and her friends encountered came back to help them out. Plus, we actually get to see how the protagonists had a positive effect on each of the characters. I remember highlighting it in my old comments when those chapters released, but I still absolutely love the prevailing theme present in those chapters. It completely contrasts Zodiark's idea of existence being suffering. Even though life can be hard, Yuna and the others were able to help others better themselves and become better people. Kieran learned to have fun again, Molayne regained his drive, Liza reconnected with family, etc

Also, I want to say more when the story finally ends (as a final comment sorta thing), but Path of Valor has also affected me in a tremendously positive way, just like Yuna and the others helped the people highlighted above

Absolutely loved this chapter, and I'm looking forward to the next one! Kudos 💙
