"Well, getting a good rest isn't exactly the easiest thing for me," she chuckled, making a small gesture at Vera, "but I've been managing." She nodded at his introduction. "Well met, Steven. My name is Ayumi, I wouldn't mind taking the time to slow down and chat. A lot has been happening recently."
smile_eyes closed.png
"Ah, well, you could have fooled me," said Steven, eyeing the little Bulbasaur who was bouncing around near Aggron's snout this time. The big steel type was still blissfully asleep. "She's certainly full of energy. It's a wonder you don't have to chase after her all the time."

At the vague mention of the recent goings-on, Steven's smile slipped just a little. "I'm sorry to say that some of the happenings have been less than savory. It's fortunate you've been able to stay out of them thus far. They're.... concerning, to say the least."

"But," he said, perhaps with a bit too much forced cheer, almost to talk himself out of the subject, "it is nice to meet you, Ayumi." That part at least was sincere. "I don't meet many trainers who have a first evolution as their partner."

"You'd be surprised," Ayumi said with a small hum. She snapped her fingers and gestured to her own lap. Immediately, Vera was bounding towards her. As Vera circled on Ayumi's lap to find a comfortable position to sit, Ayumi continued, scratching the top of the bulbasaur's head. "A lot of the reasoning behind my general absence can be attributed to her energy. She loves to explore, so she ends up getting into the strangest of places. Of course, that has left me a bit... Out of the loop on a few things."

Ayumi tapped her fingers on the armrest. "But I've heard enough to know that there's an ongoing investigation regarding a missing girl. Poor thing, I hope she'll turn out alright..."

Steven's next comment on Vera imparted a mareepish smile from Ayumi. "Oh, I'm not much of a trainer," she admitted. "I didn't even intend on taking her with me to this place but Vera, being the little spitfire that she is, chased me through the portal moments before it closed," she chuckled. Vera, in turn, let out a satisfied grunt at her trainer's words.

In spite of his earlier exhaustion, Steven found himself with more energy just from watching the little Bulbasuar. He laughed at Ayumi's admission of her being a stowaway on this trip. "Well, she seems rather well behaved at the moment," he said. "Who could pass up on the excitement of an island vacation?"

Again, Steven found his mood plummeting from his own words. He really needed to get more sleep tonight.
Ayumi tapped her fingers on the armrest. "But I've heard enough to know that there's an ongoing investigation regarding a missing girl. Poor thing, I hope she'll turn out alright..."

"I hope so, too. And, unsettlingly enough, she's not the only one who has gone missing, either. I don't mean to alarm you, Ayumi, but it might be worth keeping a close eye on your little one if she's as prone to some unexpected exploring as you say. We don't know how these trainers have been disappearing, but whatever or whoever it is, they're taking trainer's pokemon as well."

Steven's next comment on Vera imparted a mareepish smile from Ayumi. "Oh, I'm not much of a trainer,"

"Not much of a trainer? I find that hard to believe, considering you've been invited here. Though," he paused, raising a hand to his chin. "You said your Bulbasaur wasn't supposed to come with you. Then, who is the partner you brought with you for the festival?"

"Well, she seems rather well behaved at the moment," he said. "Who could pass up on the excitement of an island vacation?"
"I don't blame her in the slightest," Ayumi said with a small smile. "Despite her more rambunctious personality, Vera is well trained and listens to orders from me. Sometimes. Other times, she chases me through a portal to an island holiday." She began scratching under the bulbasaur's chin now. "Though I must admit that I'm glad to have her around. Her enthusiasm is infectious, isn't it?"

Ayumi frowned. "Multiple trainers and pokémon?" she asked. She shared a very quick glance at her shadow.

<If he speaks true, do not let Vera out of your sight.>

<Of course.>

The exchange was instantaneous, Steven would barely be able to notice it before Ayumi started talking again as if nothing happened. "I'll be sure to remain vigilant then." She tented her fingers. "Have any leads been found? Any progress she made?" she asked, tone a lot more serious.

"Not much of a trainer? I find that hard to believe, considering you've been invited here. Though," he paused, raising a hand to his chin. "You said your Bulbasaur wasn't supposed to come with you. Then, who is the partner you brought with you for the festival?"
Ah. The moment he brought up that a partner pokémon was mandatory for the festival was the moment Ayumi realised that she'd been cornering herself without her knowing. "Oh yes... My other pokémon," she chuckled a bit nervously, putting her hand on the side of her waist, imitating the movements a trainer would make when reaching for their pokémon. "See, she's a bit shy, so she's been hiding since arriving here but I can bring her out if you wish. Just... Just promise that you won't be scared?" She smiled at Steven, but it was wonky.

Steven nodded. "We don't know much, but what little we do know will be helpful to share." He went on to explain who the missing trainers were, when they disappeared, and the lead about a yellow psychic type potentially being involved. Ayumi listened intently the whole time.

"I'm comfortable sharing this with you for one key reason," he began. "According to the security officers, these disappearances started before our ship arrived for the festival. That means anyone who came over on the Trousselin with us is cleared of suspicion. Be careful who you trust of the trainers who you don't recognize from our ship."

He had a good feeling about Ayumi. She seemed much more put together than some of the trainers he'd met thus far. It was refreshing, to say the least. Hopefully with her being up to speed on the investigation, she would be another valuable set of eyes for the search.

Though... She did seem a bit nervous to share her partner pokemon. Was it something odd, or surprising? I mean, really, one of the pokemon here was a blood-eating legendary that took on the form of her vessel, there wasn't much that could truly scare him at this point.

straight ahead smile.png
"Shy isn't a problem," he reassured her. "I do like to meet all sorts of pokemon when I travel, and this festival is no exception. If she's okay with it, I'd love the chance to say hello."

"Yellow... Psychic-typing... The vanishing without a trace would imply teleportation," Ayumi thought aloud. "Perhaps from the abra family? Alakazam being the most likely of the three." She leaned back on the couch with a nod.

"I'll be sure to keep it in mind. I suspect that several of the trainers, not on the Trousselin were questioned already. Any findings there?"

"Shy isn't a problem," he reassured her. "I do like to meet all sorts of pokemon when I travel, and this festival is no exception. If she's okay with it, I'd love the chance to say hello."
Ayumi sighed. "Very well, then."

Instead of calling a pokémon through the conventional way, Ayumi looked at her own shadow, snapped her fingers and pointed to an empty space beside her.

<Come out.>

There was a moment's hesitation in the shadow, but Ayumi's presence reassured that things would be okay. The room appeared to darken, as if something was starting to suck out all the light. The temperatures dropped by several degrees. Throughout all of it, Ayumi held a straight face, watching Steven's reaction carefully.

Several moments passed before the room began to return to normal, though something seemed a bit... Different.

The empty space that Ayumi had been pointing to was now occupied by a gengar, a rather large one at that, sporting a yellow bow on its right ear. It smiled nervously at Steven.

"This is Dusana. She's been my pokémon for the better part of fifteen years," Ayumi explained simply.

"I wasn't involved in any of the questioning, but several others from our ship said they did ask the Alakazam trainer some questions, as well as our hostess, Amara, and her Hypno. Unfortunately, neither proved fruitful in getting us closer to solving this mystery. I'm not sure how much either of them can be trusted, but they've both been cooperative so far, for the most part. I'm sorry, I wish I had more news to share."

As soon as the lights began to dim, Steven had a sneaking suspicion he knew what kind of pokemon Ayumi's other partner was. The temperature drop confirmed it, and it even was enough of a chill to wake Aggron from his nap with a startled snort.

Steven hated that by the time the lights came back to full brightness, he'd pressed himself further into the couch cushions to put distance between himself and the ghost type.

shocked.png
"A-a Gengar. Your... your partner is a Gengar." He knew Ayumi could see how forced his smile was just then.

He tried to tell himself that his guard was down, he was too tired to put up a better filter, and that's what let his etiquette slip. But he knew that was a lie. His white-knuckled grip on the couch's armrest was proof enough of that. Besides, his reaction was the same every time one of Phoebe's ghosts came to pay him a visit.

It was an ugly phobia and he knew it. That's why the next thing out of his mouth was an apology.

eyes closed pensive.png
"Forgive me, Dusana," he began, unable to hide the nervousness that he knew the ghost could sense. (They were very in tune with that sort of thing, he'd learned.) "There's no excuse for my behavior. It's not you, I promise." He hoped she could at least sense he was being truthful about that.

He took a steadying breath, and managed to meet Dusana's gaze. "Someone very dear to me would be absolutely thrilled to meet you. She will be quite jealous when I tell her."

Ayumi leaned forwards, her gaze morphing into a comforting smile. "I don't blame you," she said simply. "Ghost is perhaps one of the most maligned typings. Phobias of them are more common than any other type. Only rivalled by Bug or Dark. But I can assure you that Dusana will not bring about any harm. I have an innate ability to commune with ghosts. If you're uncomfortable, just say the word and I call recall her.

Dusana tilted her head to the side before nodding at the other trainer's words.

<Tell him that I take no offence to his fears.>

Ayumi looked at her and nodded. "Dusana also holds no ill will towards your reaction," she said. "She is very aware that her presence may be frightening for some." She looked back at Steven. "You are familiar with a ghost-type specialist?" she asked. "The chances may be slim, but that would be a meeting I would look forwards to.

Dusana climbed onto the back of the couch Ayumi was sitting on, curling up around her. Ayumi scratched her behind the ear, causing the gengar to let out an approving trill.

"I wasn't involved in any of the questioning, but several others from our ship said they did ask the Alakazam trainer some questions, as well as our hostess, Amara, and her Hypno. "Ah, no, please that's quite alright. She looks rather content to be out with us now, I'd hate to have that ruined on my account."

Aggron had since trundled up behind Steven's couch and leaned down so his head rested on the back. Steven reached one hand up and rubbed his partner's helm. Aggron's close proximity was reassuring.

"I've had a few... unfortunate run ins with ghost types before," Steven admitted. Aggron huffed through his nose, tousling Steven's hair with his breath. A reminder that he was still there and ever-vigilant. "I trust you and Dusana, though. The ghosts I've had troubles with were more... impulsive." He watched the Gengar curl up on the couch as if she were a Delcatty, and smiled a genuine smile.

"Thank you, Dusana. And yes! One of my Elites, Phoebe, is a ghost type specialist. She's still young, so she'd be excited to meet someone like yourselves, partners with such a long history together. I don't think she's met many Gengar either, since they're so rare in Hoenn. I'm not sure where or when you're from," he said, "but if you find yourself in Hoenn, head to Mt. Pyre and ask for her there."

He gave a pointed look at the yellow ribbon Dusana wore. "She might even have a flower for you to wear if you like."

"I'm sorry to burden you with this problem, but your help would be invaluable. The more people we have on the lookout, the better. I don't like having this culprit on the loose, and I don't like having people disappear..."

Steven eyed Dusana as she snuggled against her trainer, and gave Aggron another pat on the snout. He couldn't bear the thought of being separated from Aggron. He knew Ayumi would feel exactly the same way should anything happen to either of her partners. They needed to get to the bottom of this, for everyone's sake.

"Yes, I know better than anyone else that some individuals have a tendency to get a bit... Intense," Ayumi said with a pensive frown. "Calming a hyperactive ghost down takes a lot of effort." She sounded as if she was speaking from experience there. "Dusana's a massive help though. Her mild temperament makes her an ideal partner for both channelling and companionship." She gave his aggron a small smile when is appeared from behind Steven's couch. "I'm sure you can relate on the companionship aspect," she added with a small laugh.

Dusana nodded at Steven in understanding, before placing her head back into Ayumi's hand.

"Ah, Hoenn," Ayumi commented. "I thought you had a bit of an accent," she said with a smile. "You can probably tell by the bulbasaur and gengar that I hail from Tohjo's eastern region, Kanto. Though probably a different one from the one you're familiar with. I'll be sure to keep your offer in mind if I ever come across your Hoenn."

"It's not a problem nor is it your fault" Ayumi reassured. "We were both burdened with the task the moment we stepped foot on the island and I fully intend to get to the bottom of this. I couldn't bear to be separated from either Vera or Dusana."

There was a determined look in her eyes as she spoke her next words.

"I'll let you know if I find anything too."

Day 3 - Steven writes a letter

Steven returned to the lounge after his trip to the Swap Shop, paper, pen, and a small box in hand. He came here partly because he knew if he went back to his room, he'd collapse on the bed and fall asleep, and partly he hoped he might not have to write this letter at all if Hayes happened to walk by.

To his disappointment, it was empty when he arrived. Aggron curled up around a beanbag again while Steven found a chair with a desk and sat down. It wouldn't take long for him to write his letter, there wasn't much to say, really.

Hayes, My apologies for missing our excursion this morning, I overslept. If you would like to try again tomorrow, I'll be in the cafe for breakfast at 9:00am. Hope to see you there.

His pen paused as he finished the sentence. It couldn't be conveyed in print, but he really hoped he would see Hayes there. The worry of not seeing the young man all day was growing... He took a moment to collect his thoughts and continued.

I stopped by the caverns today to see if I would bump into you there. Unfortunately I did not, but please give this rock to Nosepass as a treat. Aggron found a spot where the concentration of ferrous ore was quite high, and I grabbed a sample for you to see (and Nosepass to enjoy). -Kind Regards, Steven Stone

Satisfied, he folded the letter and tucked it into the box next to the fist-sized rock he produced from his pocket. He sealed the box and rose from the desk, giving the dozing Aggron a pat on the haunch.

"C'mon, let's go see if we can't find our hostess to deliver this to Hayes."

----

Steven had just left the main hall when he spotted Amara from across the courtyard. She was coming out from the Infirmary with a serious look on her face. (Though she was a very professional woman, perhaps that was just how she looked all the time.)

"Excuse me, Amara?" he called, flagging her down. "I hate to bother you, you must be busy, but would you be able to deliver a message to Hayes for me? I'd deliver it myself but I'm afraid I don't know what room he's staying in."

More violence, more chaos. Was this Festival cursed somehow? Amaras thoughts were racing. On top of dealing with missing trainers there was... Whatever else was going on.

Beneath her professional and reserved demeanor there was a well guarded sense of frazzledness from everything happening. Honzo didn't seem to be with her at the moment. Regardless, she managed to greet Steven with a friendly smile.

"Ah yes, I can certainly do that for you Mr. Stone. I believe I saw Mr Hayes while searching the island again. I wasn't able to speak to him personally but he seemed very distracted by something. I'm sure he'll be happy to receive this though. I promise you I will get it to his room."

It was clear she appeared quite genuine.

Perhaps everyone being aware now of their mystery kidnapper was making it harder from them to strike. Or had they already gotten what they needed...?

"Your care and calmness is... is much appreciated by the way, Mr. Stone."

Steven could have laughed at the relief from Amara's words. She'd seen Hayes today, thank the gods. He was so overwhelmed with the news that he forgot to correct that pesky "mister" she dropped. (He knew she was being a good host, but still, he felt like his dad every time someone called him Mr. Stone.)

He almost laughed again at her off-the-cuff comment. If only she knew how anxious and worried he'd been all day. "Well, it's not beneficial to panic about any of this," he opted for. Though, the way she had said it...

Amara sighed. "I am doing fine but it seems a few of the other guests injured themselves and upset the local pokemon during a visit to Manaphy..."

She sighed. "I would have hoped guests would have been better at keeping peace. Seems I was proven wrong."

Amara shook her head. "But don't fear. Our Nurse Joy is extremely capable. Everyone is fine. Can I help you with anything else?"

With a new weight on his mind, Steven bid Amara farewell.
