Diyem sighed. "It sounds like the current plan is to... ngh... tell Maple with someone who has a good relationship with her, possibly with Joule in their presence, and likely also Arceus and Truffle. It will be an extremely delicate operation. We should only have our most stable members doing the talk, and so nobody can misspeak. Perhaps Bahamut due to his established relationship, and also..." Diyem scanned the team.

"What if we're only nice enough to Eien to weaken her, but not kill her outright?" Cynthian asked, having been silent for a while. Her voice had a conflicted edge to it, but only because...

"I know it means to love someone, and the fear of losing them to," she said, her ember eyes lingering on Icetales briefly before she turned to Diyem.

"I didn't agree to killing Joule before last time even if it came down to it. The same goes for the devil's wife." Cynthian cleared her throat, and decided it best not to give Diyem any more assurance than that.

"What I'm curious about though, is why she's at the tree in the first place. Is it because of the power it contains? And do we know if it was conscious or instinct drew her to the world's largest power battery?"

Icetales could do nothing more than give an apologetic nod to Starr. He could tell that she was aching inside, despite always showing a tough and rough attitude outside. If only he could soothe her concern in some way…

“We did what we could. Now, there is much else we can do…”

Icetales stared at his Shadow — Keo’Keo — who was looking intently at Diyem. The darkness surrounding the spectral Ninetales had grown even stronger, and Icetales wondered what piece of his own psyche he was manifesting in that moment. Regret? Shame? Heartbreak?

That had to wait, unfortunately. There were far more pressing matters.

“…I volunteer,” he said at last, after Celeste stopped hugging him. “A diplomatic approach is what we must pursue here, in order to increase our chances and not cast yet another veil of suspicion on us. If we manage to bring Miss Maple by our side, then we should be able to retrieve our comrades without a hitch.”

He took a deep breath and his tails flicked. “We… need them. It is only with the combination of all our powers that we managed to defy all odds. That we managed to save Miss Darkwhite and Sir Joule. We pulled off many miracles until now, why can we not pull off yet another miracle?”

Keo’Keo stared at his host while the flames took a bluer tint. He nodded in consent and flashed a neutral smile. “We shall offer our assistance and do everything in our power to ensure a favorable outcome for all of us.”

"You will not be doing it alone," Diyem said. "There are some that are with me now that I feel could be appropriate, but because they are currently... within my realm, that is not as possible. Their Shadowy presence may set Maple off, combined with the other news we would be giving her. I know she and Owen are on good terms, but as he is now..."

Owen looked down, wings drooping. "If I look like this, it'll just remind her that we're under a Dark Matter."

"But we will need a small team," Diyem insisted, "I know that Bahamut is in good standings with Joule and Maple. Icetales, you as well." Diyem scammed the group. "Perhaps there can be a third candidate, if possible... But otherwise, perhaps you two shall be enough. I do not know if there are angles not being properly covered between only you two."

“This... revelation gives us a new angle, anyway.” Bahamut’s tone was nearly emotionless. “There are less than six degrees of separation between you and Maple. How... ironic.”

Koa had been listening for some time, ever since getting the weird telepathic summoning. He didn't want to speak at first, after all, he didn't have the same interest as everyone else had, who'd been here so long. Yet this matter involved legendaries. Setting his jaw, he cleared his throat, then spoke.

"We have to be honest." Hypocritical, coming from you. He ignored his inner voice. "We should definitely tell Maple everything." He glanced around at the assembled pokemon. "But we have to revive Arceus. The world needs Arceus!" his voice strengthened with conviction as he continued. "If we revive Arceus, can't we prove to this Maple that we're really trying to help?"

Luz got the call to the meeting while touring her newest friend, Electrike Koamaru of Canalave, around Destiny Village. They arrived later than she'd hoped to. At first, she peered over the heads of those team members shorter than her (most of them) to search the wraithlike presences beside Diyem for any sign of Brisa. There was none. Nothing. Diyem silenced discussion of the matter, and Astrid and Starr looked as anxious and pained as Luz felt... She didn't know who to turn to, or what she'd say to them if she did.

Instead, she listened to the proceedings of the meeting in relative silence, and kept her mind occupied by explaining bits of information to Koa. Anything to keep from wondering why Brisa wouldn't turn up and if she was safe, and if there was such a thing as safety in the Voidlands.

Gods, this was awkward.

"We have to be honest. We should definitely tell Maple everything. But we have to revive Arceus. The world needs Arceus! If we revive Arceus, can't we prove to this Maple that we're really trying to help?"

Aw, man, her lil' protege was stepping up before she was? Wind and weather... Luz stepped forward, arms crossed and back straight, and spoke up at last.

"Yeah, I'll second the call fer honesty. Deception has its uses, but keepin' our allies in th'dark ain't a sound play. And, ah, if we're tellin' God Squad, I reckon I oughta be part of the posse what does it. I'm pals with a few of those folks, 'specially Truffle. He'll listen t'me."

She took a steadying breath (or whatever passed for one, as a shade) and kept on.

"While I'm at it, lemme consult Pop's journals first. I went to Destiny Tower after the Joule fight, an' I saw that Cola was readin' a bunch of notes left by Pop. If there's a good reason to empower Cola, I'm sure we'll find it there. It can't hurt to learn as much as we can afore committing to a plan. And on that note, p'rhaps some of us could find out if there are any other power sources we could use alongside the tree? Or at least if Diyem an' Pop can recover on their own inside the next generation, y'know?"

She bit the inside of her cheek and lashed her tail, aware of the eyes of Brisa's surviving friends on her. She'd avoided them since the... Since Brisa died, and she didn't know how to approach them. Not that they'd approached her. It wasn't that she was afraid, she just... She just wanted them to be okay.

"As fer what I reckon we should do... I reckon keepin' folks' trust by revivin' an arceus is the rational choice, but more importantly than that, we owe it to our friends in the Voidlands t'get 'em safely back. They're dependin' on us. And . . . we need them."

Bahamut's tail twitched in irritation. "We're talking in circles at this point. That time is better spent actually doing the things people suggested. Besides, we're not doing any revival stuff until we investigate the Tree anyway. So, we'll use the team to investigate other avenues. And the dead ones can... continue going about their merry business in hell."

He knew the business wasn't merry, but he was tired of this. Especially with the news of Eternatus. It was taking all his willpower not to try skewering Diyem with Shining Blades.

Icetales listened intently to the exchange, his tails swaying in slow and hypnotic motions. Something was definitely bothering him, and Keo’Keo clearly felt the concerns of his host crawling through his entire phantom body. The Shadow turned to Icetales and shot a meaningful glare, before motioning toward the others. ‘Speak thy mind!’, he was silently saying.

Caught on his mild stupor, Icetales peered cautiously at the various wraiths that were the temporary forms of his dead comrades. His ears and tails flicked constantly, while his agitated mind kept showing him the same images and thoughts: a lone Vulpix, crying for his family and lost in Chaos, with his mind unraveling and welcoming the darkness…

Icetales slammed his paws, scattering snowflakes in every direction, then his entire body became rigid.

“We do not have the luxury of time here, my comrades! Whatever we decide to do we must do it immediately!” he exclaimed, addressing the entire cortège. “With each passing second our dead comrades are subject to the distortions of the Voidlands, their minds an easy prey of the cognitive miasma, and only the heavens know how much energy Eternatus has drained from the Tree of Life and is still draining as we speak.”

Icetales paced back and forth, barely managing to keep his composure. “So, we should investigate further about Sir Arceus’ journals and his plan? Then so be it! We shall instill him energy as soon as possible, so that he can give his own input about the entire situation.”

Then, he glanced again at his comrades. “And in order to accomplish that, everyone must give their contribution. We all must take on a specific task and follow it, so that we can cover the most ground in the quickest time.” He took a deep breath and allowed himself to relax. “The stakes are high. We cannot afford to dilly dally. Not now.”

"As much as I'd like for all of us to be liberated from this place, it will probably not be possible to restore Arceus, Diyem and every one of us in the void lands from what everyone has said so far." Cynthian's eyes dimmed, and she stared at the ground.

The patches of snow around her rocky perch had little sprouts crawling out from underneath. White clouds sailed the skies, and leaves drifted in her line of sight, though she could not feel any of it.

"If push comes to shove, we should only revive some of us, while others have to wait," Cynthian suggested, her eyes hovering over the others. "I volunteer to stay behind, should things come to that. There are those who are more needed to fight out there."

Please don't martyr yourself, Celeste thought, We need a team. We can't just... leave people behind. "I expect convincing the others to allow Diyem to use the tree to restore his personal power would be a non-starter in the first place. Especially if we said we were willing to abandon you in the voidlands to do so. It's just... not a good look for us as a team."

Koa listened to the Ninetales words, then the spectral Roserade. "I agree. Let's get that journal, then tell Maple everything. We shouldn't wait around." he stamped his paw on the ground to make his point. "But everybody should get brought back. Every member of a team is important," he growled. "So I say it's all or nothing."

Dark Cabot visibly frowned at Cynthian's comment. "Stop being overdramatic. The tree has enough energy to heal Arceus and revive all of us, so we're not leaving anyone behind. Besides, any residual energy left from only reviving a few of us likely wouldn't be enough to properly restore Diyem's powers anyway."

"Er... something like that, yeah," Cabot said as he blinked at his counterpart's harsh choice of words. "But you're our friend, Cynthian, so of course we're not gonna leave without you. Besides, you're a good fighter too! It's like Electrike said: everyone is important. Either we all go or not at all."

Cynthian hadn't even understood the meaning of what she'd said, until the others had spoken up. Even evolution could not keep her from slipping back to her insecure self. Hey eyes lit up at their words, even the ones from Cabot's dark twin.

"Yes... you're right. I... we—we're not alone!" she said, more to herself than the others. "We started this journey together, so we should finish it together too..."

Saying those words lifted a weight off her mind ever so slightly.

"...Then it's settled," Diyem said with a sigh. "You will have to approach Maple and break the news to her. I'm sure you can contact her to get an idea of where she is... Likely with Joule." He then looked at the others and, rolling his eyes, said, "My power is weak. Do not show too much of an outpouring of love and support toward me. But..."

Diyem hopped off of his Shadowy perch and landed on the ground with some grace. "Feel free to speak to the phantoms as you like. This is the most I can do for them. I'm... going to find a place to hide in case talks with Maple go wrong."

"Do you need someone to fly you back?" Owen asked. "How did you get all the way out here, anyway?"

"I walked."

And so, he walked again.

As soon as Diyem left the area, Icetales glanced at Bahamut and Luz — how ironic, that they were going to talk to Maple once more. Perhaps it was a sign of fate.

Phantom wisps coursed through his body, and he glanced at Keo’Keo walking through him. He felt his fur standing on end — that was so creepy!

“Golly! Did thou have to do that?” whimpered Icetales, shuddering lightly.

“Yes. It was to attract thy attention,” answered Keo’Keo, glancing at his host. “I reckon thou could use to release some tension, before going through thy mission.”

“Hm?”

Keo’Keo walked toward a specific wraith, his tails flailing and sputtering black embers. Icetales tilted his head, wondering where his Shadow was goin, when…

“…Oh. I see.”

Icetales followed the other Ninetales, walking past his comrades who had started talking about other matters. And then, he reached his Shadow and looked at the graceful wraith in front of him.

“…Greetings, Miss Cynthian. How is life on the other side treating thee so far?” He showed a concerned expression. “A-art thou swell?”

"I'm... a bit scared, Icetales. Saying I'd volunteer to stay behind earlier... It was a result of that fear too," she admitted. If there was anyone Cynthian didn't hold her heart back from, it was him.

"It already feels a bit lonely now that you've gone back to the other side," Cynthian tried to reach for his face, but her flower only dissolved to wisps upon making contact with his face. She lowered her eyes and gave him a somber smile.

"Just feeling lonely doesn't mean I'm alone though." She held her arms over her chest and said, "Our hearts are still connected, even if we are apart. And the others are still here too. I'll try to be strong and patience. Next time we meet, I hope it will be in the flesh, my love."
