Jonathan is actually a good rival. Hes skilled, hes cocky in a way that gets under mr gentlemans skin, and ken literally asks mr gentleman to beat him because jonathans gotten too strong. thats a great setup

and then jonathan DOES beat mr gentleman. twice. the first loss is pure bad luck, but the second loss feels earned- jonathan played well, mr gentleman got unlucky again but also just got outplayed plain and simple.

the wager is high stakes (mr gentleman has to sponsor jonathans ENTIRE academy education if he loses) which actually makes me care about the outcome a ton here. I dont want him to win dangit! dude sucks!!! which is really great stuff.

but then mr gentleman straight up cheats and ohh boy. he bribes stephanie to rig his gambler coinflips. and he just... does it. pays her 25% of all his winnings to fix the game, which he doesnt seem too beat up about it really, which makes me wonder if hes done this before...

and the story hasnt really addressed it yet but i assume it will later, mr gentleman justifies it ("if everyone were reasonable and dueled me I would have no need for such a severe handicap!") but thats not how morality works my guy. you made a bet, you're losing because your deck has a weakness and instead of accepting that you cheat. mr gentleman wins, feels vindicated, and moves on. So im sure this will come back later, or maybe this is a sign that our gentleman is falling down a darker path… interesting if thats so.

stephanie is... uncomfortable?

"Her age was one of the only ones that threw me for a loop. She was either eleven years old or had a petite frame being any age up to twenty-one" - why is this ambiguous if shes going to blow a kiss? why is mr gentleman considering if shed be romantic interest material if thats the case? the age ambiguity is weird, i presume its a humor bit but it didnt really land for me

gotan stuff still continues to be good. setting his own heads on fire to distract a kid from touching the flame bowls- thats both funny and shows he might actually be protective/intelligent

the pizza scene broke my heart a little. gotan wants to eat it, starts crying, dry heaving, has to bury his heads in his feathers. :( there’s something up with this bird, but i dont know what juuust yet. sleeping with both heads, seeming disappointed when rick joins permanently, maybe snickering when mr gentleman loses- either gotans smart or mr gentleman is projecting hard

the tabloid bit made me laugh

the newspaper worldbuilding is an exposition dump

just straight up "heres the newspaper let me read you three articles about UBI, doduo disappearing, and neo island immigration policy" - it stops the story dead to deliver lore

some of this matters (doduo vanishing connects to earlier hints about neo buying shipments) but i think it couldve been woven in more naturally.

aaa its getting late, but great stuff so far! I'll keep working my way through :D im curious to see where this is going to go, since I have almost no context for where this game really goes and how this functions, there's some interesting hints of whats coming up and its amusing with a very unique world concept that I havent seen in pokemon fanfic before! :D

the psychic club chapter is basically a joke which is funny. everyone just forfeits because they already know theyll lose. stephanie hands him booster packs without even dueling. "We can't be the only club to cower at your all-common deck. We do have some pride" - and then they immediately forfeit anyway. murray is still trying to bend that spoon with his mind while mr gentleman knows its a trick spoon and cant bring himself to say anything. the whole thing is like two pages and its mostly setup for whats coming

the ronald match in chapter 10 timeee

this is the first time mr gentleman has been genuinely challenged since jonathan. ronald knows his deck, knows his tactics, and the back-and-forth actually matters. the first game is a quick stomp but then ronald brings out hitmonchan and wins. the tiebreaker goes down to the wire with both of them at high prize counts

"That's it. THAT'S the potential I saw in you when you first defeated me and became Champion. All this with just a deck of common cards" - ronald respecting the win feels earned because it WAS a real challenge

also them working together on the mothzapper deck concept is sweet. mr gentleman finally has a friend again (besides rick whos mostly there for feathers)

and then chapter 11 happenssss

isaac is a VILLAIN. not just an antagonist, an actual villain. he manipulates his seven year old daughter to hurt mr gentleman emotionally. the setup is sooo tasty, jennifer asking if mr gentleman will let her win so her dad will take her to the amusement park, he throws the match because shes adorable, and then isaac uses that against him

"My poor little girl... He didn't duel you seriously. He was making fun of you. Since you didn't really win I can't take you to the amusement park now"- and jennifer starts CRYING because she thinks mr gentleman was mocking her. :(

the lighting effects during the confrontation are good staging. mr gentleman cant see anything, isaacs voice is circling him, then all the spotlights blind him while isaac tears into him. isaac genuinely believes mr gentleman is trying to steal his family, or is manuplating him, or is lying, who knows! but either way they're goating him and yeah, he responds.

isaac baited him into it but mr gentleman still swung first. which means isaac can claim self-defense when he punches him in the gut and tries to kick him

this undercuts mr gentlemans moral high ground (though he did lose it when he cheated earlier). yeah isaac is manipulating everyone and using his daughter as a weapon, but mr gentleman resorted to violence first.

gotan blocking the kick is great character work though. the bird who loves pain deliberately puts himself between isaac and mr gentleman to stop the violence. "If it weren't for Gotan's known love of pain I would have suspected he was helping!" - yeah no, gotans definitely helping. this is protective behavior

the stakes are now MASSIVE. if mr gentleman loses to isaac he has to give up being Champion permanently. if isaac loses he wont defend himself in a defamation lawsuit

also isaac banned him from the lightning club which means he cant complete his all-common tour of the clubs

I wonder if later the story going to address that mr gentleman cheated his way past jonathan.

i wonder if isaac actually villainous or does he have a point? from his perspective: his former best friend was way better at tcg, made him feel inadequate, married the girl he loved, and is now using an intentionally weak deck to embarrass people. the framing says isaacs wrong but i can see his side from an angle here

aaa so, so theyre both 18, both drinking, both clearly want each other, and he ALMOST says it - "Nikki... I've been thinking about you" - and then immediately panics into "I-I mean you and isaac!" like dude. DUDE. and she goes red every time he gets close to actually saying something!!!!!

then they go back to her place and keep drinking and the next morning hes waking up naked next to her and like, it is implied they did, and considering their reactions it probably did happen. him trying to steal his shirt back while shes clutching it in her sleep was cute. having to cover her with the sheet because he cant focus otherwise. kissing her forehead on the way out because "if I never had anything else with her at least for that one brief moment I could have that" and then Sir Pounce shows up and he STILL stops to pet the cat while fleeing

and like. we know from ricks drunk confession that nikki wanted him the whole time. so they had this night together (whatever it was) and he ran away and they never spoke about it and now its ten years later and shes married to isaac with two kids

fighting club was fine i guess. mitch keeps making comments about the members moms that are either completely innocent or hes a sex pest. jessica deciding to train blindfolded after losing made me laugh

rock club- gene is good, the rock garden description is pretty, matthew thinks professor oak sucks, this kid is never becoming club master

but okay the gotan thing is getting weird right? his cuts are visibly healing DURING the duels. rick says no ones ever seen a doduo die or found remains. theres a research facility on neo island. he blocked isaacs kick. he walks on his talon joints indoors to not scratch the floor

somethings going on with this bird and i dont know what yet- i wonder if its some dimensional shenanigans?

the club visits are starting to blur together a little bit? same structure every time, describe the room, duel some kids, leave. its fine but im ready for club masters now

mr gentleman cheated against jonathan and it hasnt mattered yet but it HAS to come up when hes about to bet his entire champion title against isaac right? like that feels like setup- or maybe its just a moral failing situation and moreso a hint of whats to come and im just fixating LOL

Thank you SO much for stopping by to review, rimly! :veelove:

Alright so i went into this knowing literally nothing about the pokemon tcg gameboy games and honestly? im kind of into it. The custom art and music links are cool, ive never seen a fic do that before, and it's giving me ideas :D
That's part of why I include other elements. Trying to keep reader's interest and attention! :okgon:

I've written the fic expecting the audience not to know about it, so hopefully that aspect won't be too detrimental.

The billy tutoring scene is very funny.
Yeah!! I knew there would be some lore to tackle early on, and humor usually helps people pay attention, so I'm glad it seemed to work on that front!

This kid is just merciless, the "i thought you were forty-five" line made me laugh, and then he keeps going with the holograms obsession and calling everything mr gentleman does lame or crummy. mr gentleman trying to maintain his dignity while dying inside is pretty funny.
:mewlulz:

Though i will say the tutoring session goes on for a while, especially once it hits the actual game mechanics explanation. i skimmed some of that part, honestly.
It does and skimming that section in particular is totally fine.

I like how committed the world is to card games solving everything. Its absurd but you just roll with it like yu-gi-oh! It's very fun.
Yeah, Yu-gi-oh seemed to be the best method for making a story about a card game. In the games, the card game is pretty much everything, so I had to do that or it just wouldn't be a TCG fic.

Mr gentleman himself is interesting as a protagonist.
So, I'm not sure how used you are to writing reviews yet, but if you are looking for ways to improve on them, this might be a good example to use. I'm glad that you find him interesting but I'm curious what things make him interesting to you. If you have further insight to provide, I'd welcome it. If not, no worries!

the dream sequence fake-out in chapter 1 worked- we see the life he wants (nikki, kids, normalcy) and then reality hits. hes 28, alone, his childhood friends married each other while he was grinding to Champion. he knows he fucked up by optimizing for achievement and losing all human connection in the process. :(
Yeah, despite his journey's end and 'having it all' he really doesn't.

The water club scene is uncomfortable in a good way.
I'm glad you added in a good way on the end lol Sometimes people make me think the chapter was a mistake, but I honestly had a lot of fun writing it and found it pretty funny. :unquag:

those girls are absolutely hunting him and he has zero defense, just trying to escape by yelling about duels. poor joshua in the background being their servant. i laughed at the crocodile shovel line LOL
I certainly had a ton of fun with that chapter. The humor was all improvised too! Very little changes vs the original draft. :mewlulz:

The main thing is the actual card game play gets really dense. like i get its a lets-play but i dont know pokemon tcg so when we hit paragraphs of turn-by-turn actions and card names my eyes kind of glaze over.
Yeah... that's fair. I've tried to make it as approachable as I could, but there is only so much I could do. It's ok if you gloss over some duel details. I won't be upset. It's not for everyone. Other reviewers do so too. Not ALL of them, but enough of them for me to take no offense from it at all.

the emotional thread disappears and it becomes mechanics. maybe this works better for people who actually play the game? for me it drags a bit to start
It's better for people who play the game. SOME reviewers are ok with it, but I've seen enough that aren't as into it. No worries on that aspect.

Also the doduo just... appears? imakuni shows up, duels, leaves, and now mr gentleman has a doduo following him home. feels like itll be important but the setup was a bit fast
That's all the setup it needed. For that part, anyway. I'll have you know I have plans for a one-shot staring Imakuni and a big part of Book Three will revolve around Doduo's prior owner!

Curious where this goes. the actual story about a lonely guy trying to find meaning after achieving everything is compelling, im just not sure how much of the 38 chapters will be card game play-by-play versus character stuff. Either way, yAHOO!
The duel details dial down at various sections. I think you will still find plenty of character stuff to stay invested. Or at least, that's my hope, anyway...

Sobs, I dont know if gotans actually smart or if mr gentleman is reading too much into a bird but either way its fun!
:mewlulz:

the collars with go and tan is a nice touch. gives him history without dumping exposition. someones owned this bird before and we dont know who- and also is named after a dragon ball character, which I'm wondering means something here.
If you mean Goten, then you are wrong. Gotan is not a dragon ball character, but I also don't mind people accidentally mixing it up. It just makes it more amusing from my perspective! :mewlulz:

the drunk scene in chapter 4 is legitimately reaaaaally good.
Yeah!! :veelove: I recently edited that chapter to enhance it too! Some of my best writing, that is!

Mr gentleman finally gets the truth, nikki wanted him the WHOLE TIME. she was trying to catch up to him in tcg skills because she thought thats what he wanted. Ughh thats BRUTAL. they both wanted each other and both thought they had to achieve something first and by the time mr gentleman got there she was already married. and shes not leaving because shes "traditional" so theyre both just stuck :(
Life be like that sometimes. 😔

But yeah, I'm glad it makes for compelling drama! :eyes:

"Why am I even here?! I got this Champion title that was supposed to MEAN something but I have NOTHING!" - yeah thats the whole story right there
Or at least a very large part of it. :okgon:

also the comedy in that scene works. them trying to have a deep conversation while absolutely hammered, the vacuum joke ("It sucked" "The vacuum! You get it?!"), mr gentleman talking about wems sandwich like its the holy grail, and then waking up SPOONING RICK ON THE COUCH. "I made a silent vow NEVER to drink that much again!" LOL
I had a TON of fun writing that chapter. Possibly the most fun in the whole book, actually! :mewlulz:

rick as a character adds a lot. hes got energy, hes weird about science stuff, hes nikki's brother so theres automatic tension, and now hes decided to be mr gentlemans wingman. the dynamic between them is fun- rick being obsessed with feathers while mr gentleman is having emotional crises
Everyone loves Rick. I think I have yet to find a reviewer who doesn't. :mewlulz:

The worldbuilding keeps dropping mysteries without explaining them. neo island buying doduo shipments even though they supposedly hate them? the legendary pokemon (mew/ho-oh/lugia) being maybe real? The weird cylindrical things in the science club that kid-mr-gentleman thought turned people into doduo? the rainbow palace with anti-gravity? this is certainly coming up in the future, but the curiosities grow ever more...
Deep. Deeper. And Deeper still. But the most interesting mysteries are yet to come. :eyes:

Gotan reacting to rick is interesting. the bird seems scared of him, then happy when rick yanks feathers out, then maybe disappointed when rick joins them permanently?
I love how you pick up on all these nuances! :veelove:

The card duels are still the same issue as before (dense play-by-play) but the outcomes are getting more interesting. the turn-2 win against david where he barely got to play? that actually matters because it shows how brutal the deck can be with good draws. and gotan taking damage from the doduo card and LOVING it while showering feathers everywhere is a fun visual
Glad the duel aspect is getting a little better for you. It should continue to get better as it goes too. Maybe you will even pick up on more of it as you go?

The wem subplot keeps coming up and it feels like shes gonna come back into the story eventually...
You seem well versed in the concept of conservation of detail... :mewlulz:

these three chapters moved the plot forward and did real character work. the ratio of story-to-card-game is better here too!
The fic is a bit front-loaded on TCG stuff because I didn't want readers drifting along through the duels aimlessly so I tried to do a bit of hand-holding with them.

Curious how the fire club visit goes since thats where mr gentleman was a member :D
And ANOTHER nuance you remembered! Very nice! :okgon:

Jonathan is actually a good rival. Hes skilled, hes cocky in a way that gets under mr gentlemans skin, and ken literally asks mr gentleman to beat him because jonathans gotten too strong. thats a great setup
A temporary rival, but a good one. And totally random too! When I lost to him in the original lets-play I was starting to think the whole thing was a bust! :unquag:

and then jonathan DOES beat mr gentleman. twice. the first loss is pure bad luck, but the second loss feels earned- jonathan played well, mr gentleman got unlucky again but also just got outplayed plain and simple.
Have I mentioned I hate cards that require coin-flips? :copyka:

:mewlulz:
the wager is high stakes (mr gentleman has to sponsor jonathans ENTIRE academy education if he loses) which actually makes me care about the outcome a ton here. I dont want him to win dangit! dude sucks!!! which is really great stuff.
Yes, the first of a high-stakes game. :veelove:

but then mr gentleman straight up cheats and ohh boy. he bribes stephanie to rig his gambler coinflips. and he just... does it. pays her 25% of all his winnings to fix the game, which he doesnt seem too beat up about it really, which makes me wonder if hes done this before...
The teleporter has a subscription to work. He reasoned 'Gambler' should too. Now, I will say that I do get some flak for this plot point, but I have my reasons for keeping it included. I can't wait for you to see what that is eventually... :veelove:

and the story hasnt really addressed it yet but i assume it will later, mr gentleman justifies it ("if everyone were reasonable and dueled me I would have no need for such a severe handicap!") but thats not how morality works my guy. you made a bet, you're losing because your deck has a weakness and instead of accepting that you cheat. mr gentleman wins, feels vindicated, and moves on. So im sure this will come back later, or maybe this is a sign that our gentleman is falling down a darker path… interesting if thats so.
So, I will say it's not an indication of him falling down a darker path, but yes, your critique here is valid. Even so, I have reasons for keeping it. :eyes:

stephanie is... uncomfortable?

"Her age was one of the only ones that threw me for a loop. She was either eleven years old or had a petite frame being any age up to twenty-one" - why is this ambiguous if shes going to blow a kiss? why is mr gentleman considering if shed be romantic interest material if thats the case? the age ambiguity is weird, i presume its a humor bit but it didnt really land for me
This was a brand new section.(Haven't even got K_S's input on it yet) I did not originally have her blow a kiss or have him react to the kiss. My current head-canon is that she is, in fact, 11 and finds it amusing to mess with men like that(She has no interest in any actual dating or romance outside of her age group). She gets away with it because her foresight always helps her avoid any real trouble. Her age being ambiguous was in a different chapter originally and I think the humor may have landed better in that scene than in this one?

But if a girl blows a kiss at a guy (especially if the guy is lonely), why wouldn't he consider that she was displaying potential romantic interest for him? Or at the very least, why would it be a stretch to think a guy might?

The vibe I was trying to go for here is that Stephanie grew up too fast and gets into all kinds of trouble without suffering the consequences for her behavior.(which leads to more bad behavior) Now, you might consider a child working to be odd, but I figure she faked her job application or something. Certainly would not be something she would be above doing.

I appreciate the concrit here. If you have more to say on it, your opinion is welcome.

gotan stuff still continues to be good. setting his own heads on fire to distract a kid from touching the flame bowls- thats both funny and shows he might actually be protective/intelligent
Glad it landed well! :eyes:

the pizza scene broke my heart a little. gotan wants to eat it, starts crying, dry heaving, has to bury his heads in his feathers. :(
Yep. No matter what else, Gotan wasn't able to have the pizza he wanted.

there’s something up with this bird, but i dont know what juuust yet. sleeping with both heads, seeming disappointed when rick joins permanently, maybe snickering when mr gentleman loses- either gotans smart or mr gentleman is projecting hard
I will say, I don't have many readers that consider the potential for the narrator being unreliable. I love how there are multiple ways readers can use to theory-craft! :veelove:

the tabloid bit made me laugh
Excellent. :mewlulz:

the newspaper worldbuilding is an exposition dump

just straight up "heres the newspaper let me read you three articles about UBI, doduo disappearing, and neo island immigration policy" - it stops the story dead to deliver lore
Oof! At least they were short articles? :copyka:

Though, I suppose I could try to add stuff from the environment inbetween the stuff in the articles... I haven't seen anyone else mention it as a problem though. I'll keep in mind that you brought it up. I may look at revising if I get more complaints on it. :okgon:

some of this matters (doduo vanishing connects to earlier hints about neo buying shipments) but i think it couldve been woven in more naturally.
I suppose? Let me have my lore darnit! :mewlulz:youdontknowhowmuchloreivereallyhaditwaswaaaaaaybiggerthanthatbefore! :copyka:

aaa its getting late, but great stuff so far! I'll keep working my way through :D im curious to see where this is going to go, since I have almost no context for where this game really goes and how this functions, there's some interesting hints of whats coming up and its amusing with a very unique world concept that I havent seen in pokemon fanfic before! :D
Yep! And I doubt you will ever see anything else quite like it. In fact, I figure the entire internet for all of mankind might not! :mewlulz:

the psychic club chapter is basically a joke which is funny. everyone just forfeits because they already know theyll lose. stephanie hands him booster packs without even dueling.
Yeah, I was pretty amused at it too. The idea of them forfeiting! :mewlulz: I enjoy a good funny chapter every now and then.

the ronald match in chapter 10 timeee

this is the first time mr gentleman has been genuinely challenged since jonathan. ronald knows his deck, knows his tactics, and the back-and-forth actually matters. the first game is a quick stomp but then ronald brings out hitmonchan and wins. the tiebreaker goes down to the wire with both of them at high prize counts

"That's it. THAT'S the potential I saw in you when you first defeated me and became Champion. All this with just a deck of common cards" - ronald respecting the win feels earned because it WAS a real challenge
CbEEYZjUsAEY8El.jpg

Did you just enjoy a DUEL?? :unquag:

also them working together on the mothzapper deck concept is sweet. mr gentleman finally has a friend again (besides rick whos mostly there for feathers)
:veelove:

and then chapter 11 happenssss

isaac is a VILLAIN. not just an antagonist, an actual villain.
Yeessssss!!! :veelove:

he manipulates his seven year old daughter to hurt mr gentleman emotionally. the setup is sooo tasty,
Chapter 11 is a major turning point. Just like a chapter 11 bankruptcy! :unquag:

jennifer asking if mr gentleman will let her win so her dad will take her to the amusement park, he throws the match because shes adorable, and then isaac uses that against him
Yes. Yes he does. :eyes:

"My poor little girl... He didn't duel you seriously. He was making fun of you. Since you didn't really win I can't take you to the amusement park now"- and jennifer starts CRYING because she thinks mr gentleman was mocking her. :(
It was quite the reversal and one I'm quite proud of. (Even though that feels odd to say lol :unquag:)

the lighting effects during the confrontation are good staging. mr gentleman cant see anything, isaacs voice is circling him, then all the spotlights blind him while isaac tears into him. isaac genuinely believes mr gentleman is trying to steal his family, or is manuplating him, or is lying, who knows! but either way they're goating him and yeah, he responds.

isaac baited him into it but mr gentleman still swung first. which means isaac can claim self-defense when he punches him in the gut and tries to kick him

this undercuts mr gentlemans moral high ground (though he did lose it when he cheated earlier)
Fair on the cheating aspect.

. yeah isaac is manipulating everyone and using his daughter as a weapon, but mr gentleman resorted to violence first.

gotan blocking the kick is great character work though. the bird who loves pain deliberately puts himself between isaac and mr gentleman to stop the violence. "If it weren't for Gotan's known love of pain I would have suspected he was helping!" - yeah no, gotans definitely helping. this is protective behavior
:mewlulz:

the stakes are now MASSIVE. if mr gentleman loses to isaac he has to give up being Champion permanently. if isaac loses he wont defend himself in a defamation lawsuit
Correct! :okgon:

also isaac banned him from the lightning club which means he cant complete his all-common tour of the clubs
Well, the only one in the lighting club he didn't duel was Isaac. So he CAN still complete it since he is permitted a match with Isaac later.

I wonder if later the story going to address that mr gentleman cheated his way past jonathan.
So... I'll answer this as a 'sort of'.

The meta answer is that I did not play the game with any cheats. That means that even though he may look like he is cheating, the results are not from cheating. That doesn't address the fact that he THINKS he is cheating, though so if you have some beef with that, it's valid.

i wonder if isaac actually villainous or does he have a point? from his perspective: his former best friend was way better at tcg, made him feel inadequate, married the girl he loved, and is now using an intentionally weak deck to embarrass people. the framing says isaacs wrong but i can see his side from an angle here
Ooo! I LOVE the way you analyze things! :wowzard:

I think you will be quite interested in later chapters...
aaa so, so theyre both 18, both drinking, both clearly want each other, and he ALMOST says it - "Nikki... I've been thinking about you" - and then immediately panics into "I-I mean you and isaac!" like dude. DUDE. and she goes red every time he gets close to actually saying something!!!!!
So close. So FREAKING close!!! :wowzard:

then they go back to her place and keep drinking and the next morning hes waking up naked next to her and like, it is implied they did, and considering their reactions it probably did happen.
It's a real possibility. :eyes:

him trying to steal his shirt back while shes clutching it in her sleep was cute.
🥰

having to cover her with the sheet because he cant focus otherwise. kissing her forehead on the way out because "if I never had anything else with her at least for that one brief moment I could have that" and then Sir Pounce shows up and he STILL stops to pet the cat while fleeing
Such a seemingly random detail, but I enjoy cats. :mewlulz:

and like. we know from ricks drunk confession that nikki wanted him the whole time. so they had this night together (whatever it was) and he ran away and they never spoke about it and now its ten years later and shes married to isaac with two kids
Heavy stuff. :okgon:

fighting club was fine i guess. mitch keeps making comments about the members moms that are either completely innocent or hes a sex pest. jessica deciding to train blindfolded after losing made me laugh
Fighting club was certainly on the weaker side as far as chapters go, but I'm glad it was still able to entertain.

rock club- gene is good, the rock garden description is pretty, matthew thinks professor oak sucks, this kid is never becoming club master
:mewlulz:

but okay the gotan thing is getting weird right? his cuts are visibly healing DURING the duels. rick says no ones ever seen a doduo die or found remains. theres a research facility on neo island. he blocked isaacs kick. he walks on his talon joints indoors to not scratch the floor
The evidence mounts. But what does it point to? :eyes:

somethings going on with this bird and i dont know what yet- i wonder if its some dimensional shenanigans?
:mewlulz:

the club visits are starting to blur together a little bit? same structure every time, describe the room, duel some kids, leave. its fine but im ready for club masters now
Good because it's time for the club masters now.

But the structure of the club visits is what it is. I'm operating on a lets-play skeleton here.

mr gentleman cheated against jonathan and it hasnt mattered yet but it HAS to come up when hes about to bet his entire champion title against isaac right?
Let's just say, you've only seen the HALF of it... :mewlulz:

like that feels like setup- or maybe its just a moral failing situation and moreso a hint of whats to come and im just fixating LOL
Oh there is definitely more to it. You will soon find out more.

This has been amazing! :veelove: Please feel free to reply to my reply within the fic. I don't care if it adds more posts to the fic. I just enjoy the interactions. (Assuming you are open to that. Totally fine if not.)

okay so first off: thanks for clarifying the stephanie thing, that makes more sense if shes supposed to be a kid whos getting into trouble she shouldnt be in because psychic powers let her avoid consequences. still a bit weird but i get what youre going for now

"Did you just enjoy a DUEL??" - yeah! i enjoy yu gi oh, so i enjoy duels the earlier ones i think just didnt have enough stakes for me really. the ronald match was genuinely tense and i cared about the outcome. i think it works because ronald KNOWS mr gentlemans deck and is actively countering it, so its not just turn-by-turn mechanics

the cheating thing - the meta answer is interesting. mr gentleman THINKS hes cheating by bribing stephanie, but the actual coinflips in your lets-play werent rigged, so... is stephanie actually doing anything? or is she just taking his money and letting him think shes helping? because that would be hilarious and also fit her character (psychic, sees the future, knows shell get paid either way)

"you've only seen the HALF of it" - so its definitely coming back. good. i was worried it was just gonna be a moral failing that never got addressed

gene being universally good is nice to hear. the rock garden description genuinely worked for me

and yeah the gotan evidence is piling up - healing factor, no one finding doduo remains, protective behavior, neo island research facility. im very curious where this goes because it feels like hes not just a normal doduo

gonna keep reading! this is fun :wowzard:

onto the next chapters!

WAIT THEYRE CLONES???

okay so rick and mr gentleman spend a whole chapter figuring out that neo island immigrants are all identical, get dna samples, test them, and discover theyre literally clones. male clones all have identical dna, female clones all have identical dna. and none of them can play pokemon tcg no matter how many times you explain the rules

and then they panic about shadow government conspiracies and vow never to tell anyone because "everyone who figured this out must have been silenced"

i have no idea if this is real lore or if theyre being paranoid idiots but either way its wild

also "we can test this theory" followed by them just... asking random immigrants for hair samples "for science" made me laugh

to the next chap!

rick being mr gentlemans "anti-wingman" against amy is very funny.

he shows up, talks in a deliberately nasally voice, breathes heavily, makes creepy faces, wiggles his fingers at her, and amy CANNOT HANDLE IT. she forfeits the duel just to get away from him

"Please get that creature out of here!" "What? The doduo?" "NO! Not Doduo! I mean your cringe hired-hand Rick!"

amy running barefoot out of the club in a panic because rick wont stop being weird at her - perfection. she even forgets her deck (hey free cards)

and then the casual duel with rick where mr gentleman realizes: if hes good enough to beat everyone with commons, he overtrained. he couldve spent that time with nikki before she married isaac

to the next one and oh my god im an idiot.
WAIT HIS NAME IS TANGO NOT GOTAN

I SHOULDVE CAUGHT THAT. the collars say "go" and "tan" but you read them BACKWARDS so its "tan" and "go" = TANGO i mean literally thats your username LMAO

and tango REACTS. his eyes go wide when murray says theres more to him. mr gentleman thinks he sees tango sigh in relief which!! hey it isnt in his head :)

so yeah tango is definitely not a normal doduo and murray's psychic powers picked up on it. the mystery is building and im very curious what this birds deal actually is

also murray rage-quitting on the spoon and just bending it with his hands made me laugh.

the mr mime preventing weakness/resistance in murrays deck is actually interesting strategy - it nerfs mr gentlemans main gimmick (weakness conversion)

kens deck mixing fire/normal/fighting/water is fun. he was SO focused on mono-fire and now hes branching out

overall these chapters are good. the clone conspiracy is bonkers, the amy sequence is hilarious, and the tango reveal feels earned sobs i feel so stupid for missing it but it makes sense

okay so mitch WASNT being a creep, all the double meanings really were innocent - the rack was for katana display, the padding was for the floor, dealing with jessicas mom was about explaining bruises from shadowboxing. mr gentleman can finally relax about that lol

gene giving actual good advice about the isaac situation surprised me. "dont let isaac know you wont sue him. your anger could shake nikkis confidence in his side of the story" - thats smart. use isaacs guilt against him

rick saying "we cant afford to fight fairly against isaac" after telling mr gentleman hes not in the wrong means a lot coming from nikkis brother. hes choosing mr gentleman over his brother-in-law

tango creating perfect rock garden rings around the stones made me pause. mr gentleman tries to dismiss it as coincidence but like... the bird UNDERSTANDS AESTHETICS? or at least rock garden design principles? what- this bird is like a human I think or something

wait STEPHANIE SAID WHAT?? so somethings about to happen to mr gentleman and stephanie KNOWS because shes psychic and she almost warned him but caught herself

and then GR2 shows up asking to "interview" him for a magazine except the whole thing is INCREDIBLY SKETCHY. mysterious bodysuit, voice modulator, meets him in an alley, gets yanked up by rope after getting all the info. thats not a journalist at alll bud

tango diving into the trashcan the SECOND gr2 appears and staying hidden until theyre gone - yeah that bird knew something was wrong

mr gentleman just... gave gr2 all his information about his deck and schedule because he thought it was for a magazine. my guy you just told a suspicious stranger in an alley everything they need to know to counter your strategy

time to chapter 20!

ISAAC POV?? Oh hellyeah, we finally see inside his head and its DARK

okay waht, he orchestrated the entire "everyone refuse to duel mr gentleman" campaign to force him into poverty and obscurity

he knows nikki says mr gentlemans name in her sleep and it ENRAGES him. "Every time I heard her mutter his name in my sleep my anger boiled"

he PAID STEPHANIE to write the tabloid about mr gentleman

he PAID STEPHANIE to rig gambler coinflips AGAINST mr gentleman (wait so stephanie was taking money from BOTH of them? she told mr gentleman she was rigging FOR him but isaac paid her to rig AGAINST him? or is she just taking money from both and doing nothing?)

and the big one: HE HIRED GR2. "With our Champion gone he would eventually fade from the public eye"

isaac paid someone to KIDNAP OR KILL mr gentleman. "GR2 was a true professional. They even performed a mock-kidnapping on me as a demonstration"

this is an assassination plot. isaac is trying to have mr gentleman disappeared like god damn-- how much money does this guy have lmaO

and the photo of heather and jennifer walking to school together IS really cute which makes the whole chapter even darker because isaac genuinely loves his kids but is also a villain willing to murder someone

the tragedy is i can KIND of see isaacs perspective? his wife dreams about another man every night, that man is celebrated constantly by society, and isaac feels like he stole everything from him. but hiring an assassin is uh, yeah buddy, you're coco for cocopuffs.

also if stephanie is taking money from both isaac (to rig against) and mr gentleman (to rig for)... is she doing anything at all? or just pocketing both payments and letting the coinflips be random? huh

okay so first off: thanks for clarifying the stephanie thing, that makes more sense if shes supposed to be a kid whos getting into trouble she shouldnt be in because psychic powers let her avoid consequences. still a bit weird but i get what youre going for now
:okgon:

"Did you just enjoy a DUEL??" - yeah! i enjoy yu gi oh, so i enjoy duels the earlier ones i think just didnt have enough stakes for me really. the ronald match was genuinely tense and i cared about the outcome. i think it works because ronald KNOWS mr gentlemans deck and is actively countering it, so its not just turn-by-turn mechanics
:okgon:

the cheating thing - the meta answer is interesting. mr gentleman THINKS hes cheating by bribing stephanie, but the actual coinflips in your lets-play werent rigged, so... is stephanie actually doing anything? or is she just taking his money and letting him think shes helping? because that would be hilarious and also fit her character (psychic, sees the future, knows shell get paid either way)
:mewlulz:

"you've only seen the HALF of it" - so its definitely coming back. good. i was worried it was just gonna be a moral failing that never got addressed
:unquag:

gene being universally good is nice to hear. the rock garden description genuinely worked for me
I thought the rock garden was pretty cool too! Glad you liked it!

and yeah the gotan evidence is piling up - healing factor, no one finding doduo remains, protective behavior, neo island research facility. im very curious where this goes because it feels like hes not just a normal doduo
What do you mean? He is perfectly normal and there is nothing weird about Doduo's in general. Just some common mon. :veelove:

gonna keep reading! this is fun :wowzard:
I'm genuinely happy to hear that! :veelove:

From here things only get crazier too!

onto the next chapters!
:eyes: Have I mentioned how utterly amazing the speed in which you read and review things is? :veelove:

WAIT THEYRE CLONES???
Indeed. :alien:

okay so rick and mr gentleman spend a whole chapter figuring out that neo island immigrants are all identical, get dna samples, test them, and discover theyre literally clones. male clones all have identical dna, female clones all have identical dna. and none of them can play pokemon tcg no matter how many times you explain the rules

i have no idea if this is real lore or if theyre being paranoid idiots but either way its wild
Oh, so you question the lore at face value? Clever... :veelove:

also "we can test this theory" followed by them just... asking random immigrants for hair samples "for science" made me laugh
I love injecting humor where it works. :mewlulz:

to the next chap!

rick being mr gentlemans "anti-wingman" against amy is very funny.
I love how it goes so differently than the first time he meets Amy in the fic too. :mewlulz:

he shows up, talks in a deliberately nasally voice, breathes heavily, makes creepy faces, wiggles his fingers at her, and amy CANNOT HANDLE IT. she forfeits the duel just to get away from him

"Please get that creature out of here!" "What? The doduo?" "NO! Not Doduo! I mean your cringe hired-hand Rick!"

amy running barefoot out of the club in a panic because rick wont stop being weird at her - perfection. she even forgets her deck (hey free cards)
I'm glad the humor in the fic seems to land with you! It makes me laugh to see people laugh! :mewlulz:

and then the casual duel with rick where mr gentleman realizes: if hes good enough to beat everyone with commons, he overtrained. he couldve spent that time with nikki before she married isaac
And maybe he could have even dated and married her? His life would be his dreams...

to the next one and oh my god im an idiot.
WAIT HIS NAME IS TANGO NOT GOTAN
:ROFLMAO: YES!!

What makes me laugh harder than anything else is when I have obvious stuff that people MISS and then I get to see their reactions when they finally learn the truth! :ROFLMAO:

I SHOULDVE CAUGHT THAT. the collars say "go" and "tan" but you read them BACKWARDS so its "tan" and "go" = TANGO i mean literally thats your username LMAO

Buckle up. You're in for a wild ride. But it's a long way to the top... :eyes:

also murray rage-quitting on the spoon and just bending it with his hands made me laugh.
:mewlulz:

the mr mime preventing weakness/resistance in murrays deck is actually interesting strategy - it nerfs mr gentlemans main gimmick (weakness conversion)
That does seem to be a big part of it, yeah.

kens deck mixing fire/normal/fighting/water is fun. he was SO focused on mono-fire and now hes branching out
I was shocked when I saw his decklist. I was like WAIT this guy as mostly NOT FIRE in his deck and he is the FIRE CLUB MASTER??! Whaaaaaat?? So, of course I had to have something in the narrative reflect it.

overall these chapters are good. the clone conspiracy is bonkers, the amy sequence is hilarious,
Yep. You are in the best section of the book now according to other readers and my own opinion as well!

and the tango reveal feels earned sobs i feel so stupid for missing it but it makes sense
That's the great thing about mysteries. It's amusing when people figure out the simple ones, hilarious when they don't and the harder mysteries are cool to see people speculate on and mega impressive if people figure stuff out! :eyes:

okay so mitch WASNT being a creep, all the double meanings really were innocent - the rack was for katana display, the padding was for the floor, dealing with jessicas mom was about explaining bruises from shadowboxing. mr gentleman can finally relax about that lol
When he shows up again later I'm going to keep having him say things that get taken waaaay wrong. Except in the future it will just be funny because readers will know there isn't anything to it yet be amazed at how he constantly innocently sounds like it! :mewlulz:

gene giving actual good advice about the isaac situation surprised me. "dont let isaac know you wont sue him. your anger could shake nikkis confidence in his side of the story" - thats smart. use isaacs guilt against him
I wanted him to be a wise father-figure kind of guy. One of the better supporting characters, I think.

rick saying "we cant afford to fight fairly against isaac" after telling mr gentleman hes not in the wrong means a lot coming from nikkis brother. hes choosing mr gentleman over his brother-in-law
Everybody loves Rick.

tango creating perfect rock garden rings around the stones made me pause. mr gentleman tries to dismiss it as coincidence but like... the bird UNDERSTANDS AESTHETICS? or at least rock garden design principles? what- this bird is like a human I think or something
I love getting more bold with the hints as stuff goes! :mewlulz:

wait STEPHANIE SAID WHAT?? so somethings about to happen to mr gentleman and stephanie KNOWS because shes psychic and she almost warned him but caught herself
Correct. :okgon:

But the question is: what did she see? :eyes:

:alien:
mr gentleman just... gave gr2 all his information about his deck and schedule because he thought it was for a magazine. my guy you just told a suspicious stranger in an alley everything they need to know to counter your strategy
No way GR2 would do something so nefarious. They are such a wholesome person! :veelove:

time to chapter 20!

ISAAC POV?? Oh hellyeah, we finally see inside his head and its DARK
Readers seem to appreciate the guest-star POVs in the fic. I enjoy them too. There will be more of those in the series.

okay waht, he orchestrated the entire "everyone refuse to duel mr gentleman" campaign to force him into poverty and obscurity
Yep, but it didn't work so he had to get dirtier with it.

he knows nikki says mr gentlemans name in her sleep and it ENRAGES him. "Every time I heard her mutter his name in my sleep my anger boiled"
He has quite a number of demons. :copyka:

he PAID STEPHANIE to write the tabloid about mr gentleman
Yep! I couldn't resist tying it together with stuff. Stephanie is perfect for off-loading all the shady (but not quite evil) stuff on.

he PAID STEPHANIE to rig gambler coinflips AGAINST mr gentleman (wait so stephanie was taking money from BOTH of them? she told mr gentleman she was rigging FOR him but isaac paid her to rig AGAINST him? or is she just taking money from both and doing nothing?)
This one I'll outright answer because it's funnier that way. She is taking money from both and getting paid to do absolutely nothing. :mewlulz:

and the big one: HE HIRED GR2. "With our Champion gone he would eventually fade from the public eye"
You are correct that this is the big one. 💀

isaac paid someone to KIDNAP OR KILL mr gentleman. "GR2 was a true professional. They even performed a mock-kidnapping on me as a demonstration"

this is an assassination plot. isaac is trying to have mr gentleman disappeared like god damn-- how much money does this guy have lmaO
How much money? Pretty much none now. You should ask GR2 how much money THEY have! :copyka:

and the photo of heather and jennifer walking to school together IS really cute which makes the whole chapter even darker because isaac genuinely loves his kids but is also a villain willing to murder someone
I thought the contrast worked nicely there too. :okgon:

the tragedy is i can KIND of see isaacs perspective? his wife dreams about another man every night, that man is celebrated constantly by society, and isaac feels like he stole everything from him.
Excellent. I wanted people to be able to sympathize with him a little. Helps build the drama more! :okgon:

but hiring an assassin is uh, yeah buddy, you're coco for cocopuffs.
He definitely has problems! :copyka:

also if stephanie is taking money from both isaac (to rig against) and mr gentleman (to rig for)... is she doing anything at all? or just pocketing both payments and letting the coinflips be random? huh
:mewlulz: That's why I said "you only know the HALF of it" :mewlulz:

Track 26 – a C major for the [innocently happy scenes]. Rick sounds even more chill with this track on.

Great illustration, by the way,

I find the chapter introduction fair. A direct mention of drunkness signals the slightly higher maturity of the work. Very well, I will take note of that.

Track 27 – an E major to carry on the joy of the earlier moments. That joy works for the audience, albeit not for the characters.

"I took ALL SIX YEARS! Twelve semesters of it." I smiled exactly like a troll face

Unfortunately for him, many of his attacks required successful coin-flips and this would prove to be his undoing
I get it, this is a filler chapter. No privilege of watching the battle in full detail, am I right?
no criticism intended

Gotan was taking attacks by Erik's Pokemon cards! The crazy bird loved it
Masochist spotted. I wonder how the future chapters will handle this characterization.

Now, allow me to show you my first beta-reading commentary.

For starters, the chapter offers a relief from the main plot. Rather than card battles and stategies, readers verify a slice-of-life montage of MC and Rick. That kind of break is a common tactic known as a [character-driven filler chapter], and mostly appreciated by the readers.

I raised an eyebrow. "Did you get a bountiful haul, my good man?"

TCG2_Rick_Win.png

"It sucked." Rick snickered, barely holding back a laugh.
Aw, look! We got lots of comedy, too! :mewlulz:

Rick giggled as he climbed back into his seat. "No wonder you kick the living Mew out of people in the TCG, you psychopath!"

"Man," I squinted, "I wish I had one of those sandwiches she made..." And yet, despite my intoxicated brain having absolute faith that squinting would let me see the sandwich, if not outright make it appear, to my bafflement, it didn't work.
Yeah, just a chapter to lay back, laugh, and [feel all good while we can].

"It breaks the scale! Shatters it to little pieces. What you THINK breaks the scale it breaks EVEN HARDER! I want to chomp it! NOW!"
Highlighting a memorable moment to laugh.

On the other hand, the chapter introduces romantic tension midway through. From there, the tone abruptly shifts from comedic into borderline tragic. Readers may react to this with mild confusion, seeing as the sudden tragedy overshadows the previous lightheartedness.

"I KNOW!" I groaned. "But I thought I would have OPTIONS after being Champion..."

Rick held his hands out. "You're single, dude. Should have dated Wem."

I covered my face with my hands. "Yeah... then I wouldn't have to be single..."
Um, am I supposed to cry here or treat this exchange lightheartedly?

"Dude. That's the table, man. Couch that way." Rick pointed before he started giggling.

No wonder it was so hard!
Back to humor. Perhaps the previous scene was just a drunkenness gag.
i later see that it wasn’t exactly just a gag

"Nikki. I did it all for Nikki." I could feel my face flush as I looked away.

TCG2_Rick_Loss.png

Rick had a confused and unamused look. "My SISTER? Dude! Why?!"
Wait, are we getting all serious, now?! Didn’t see that one coming.

I nodded as we both started getting sleepier...
Wow, that was a touching moment. Guess I’m in for some recovery.

"Nikki, please stop that! I love you!"

But now she was elbowing even harder. I was starting to get nauseous.
I’m surprised to see him dreaming exclusively about Nikki. Wasn’t she the whole reason he wanted to become TCG Champion?

Overall, the subplot with Nikki feels oddly placed. The tone suggests importance, yet the backstory sparingly transcends expositional territory. Readers are left wondering why the section reads as important.
Knowing that, this chapter would work well if synergized with an upcoming one, especially if using flashbacks to “MC & Rick’s conversation.”

Meanwhile, the chapter’s final battle ends the break. Those scenes do a great job at pulling readers back to the main plot.

"Very well! Lets see if today is the day I lose with this all-common deck!" I took my seat and smiled.
You show ‘em, MC! :veelove:

In essence, this chapter functions as a lighthearted interval from the plot. By contrast, MC’s backstory with Nikki reads as a subplot that breaks that sense of lightheartedness. Readers may cry, yet they find it hard to understand her importance to the plot.

From there, I ask the following: is Nikki supposed to be a reminder of MC’s past, or is she a catalyst for character development from him?

If she is a reminder: MC and Rick would talk about her in a more mundane tone, or anything profound they say is excused by their drunkenness;
If she is a catalyst: MC’s changes, centered around his desire to be the TCG Champion, should be highlighted.

Overall insightful break from all the battling. Wondering if this chapter will be mentioned in the future, regarding MC’s former relationship with Nikki.

I might be late for this, but…
Have a happy Pokémon day!

With more Doduo masochism, obviously. :mewlulz:

For starters, the chapter offers a relief from the main plot. Rather than card battles and stategies, readers verify a slice-of-life montage of MC and Rick. That kind of break is a common tactic known as a [character-driven filler chapter], and mostly appreciated by the readers.
Yep! Every now and then I figured there should be some non-battle chapters.

Yeah, just a chapter to lay back, laugh, and [feel all good while we can].

Both.

Back to humor. Perhaps the previous scene was just a drunkenness gag.
i later see that it wasn’t exactly just a gag
Correct.

Wait, are we getting all serious, now?! Didn’t see that one coming.
Yep. Drunkenness is both for humor and getting to the heart of things. I'd say I maximized the use of it for the narrative!

Wow, that was a touching moment. Guess I’m in for some recovery.
Yeah, the chapter does quite a lot!

I’m surprised to see him dreaming exclusively about Nikki. Wasn’t she the whole reason he wanted to become TCG Champion?
Yes. She was the girl of his dreams who announced she would marry whoever became champion. So it filled him with desire and passion to get better so he could become champion. Nikki didn't wait on him and abandoned her idea, marrying Isaac instead.

If this is you trying to ask if this is important and will come up again later, it more DEFINITELY will! :eyes:

Meanwhile, the chapter’s final battle ends the break. Those scenes do a great job at pulling readers back to the main plot.
Thanks!

That he does.

In essence, this chapter functions as a lighthearted interval from the plot. By contrast, MC’s backstory with Nikki reads as a subplot that breaks that sense of lightheartedness. Readers may cry, yet they find it hard to understand her importance to the plot.
Hah. Her importance to the plot will be revealed in all due time.

From there, I ask the following: is Nikki supposed to be a reminder of MC’s past, or is she a catalyst for character development from him?
Both.

If she is a reminder: MC and Rick would talk about her in a more mundane tone, or anything profound they say is excused by their drunkenness;

Suffice to say, she is important and you will see

Coming back from my last review about one week later than expected, since I wanted to have it cleaned up end-of-Feb but hey, here we are.

Review (Ch.1)

…Perhaps not to Soon™ as I had said, but stuff is mostly here.

The day of new adventure comes. After all, it’s time to MAKE MONEY!!! Dread it, run from it, expenditures always come.

As I laid in bed, I considered the space of my new home. It certainly gave room to breathe, but had a certain… emptiness about it.
Consider: acquiring things to decorate homes costs money. Money that we have yet to make! Instead, enjoy the free space. Once the Diogenes hits strong and your living room is full of stack of boxes of VHS movies about card game players you’ll never watch, it’s never coming back.

Armed with my ‘FlashFire!’ deck, the members of the Grass Club should make for the best test run since fire would give me the advantage.
My two OCs with Flash Fire approve.

Free piece of advice if you ever plan on cross-posting this to sites like AO3: leave a section link to, or an extra copy of, the deck listing that was provided in the previous paragraph. It’s more mechanical information that’s useful for those who are following things more closely to the point, and saves those who care from keeping an extra tab open.

(Then again, who am I kidding, if a reader of yours is gonna track the mechanics that closely, they likely already have three extra tabs open solely because of this fic, lol)

So, “Mister”™ engages in a healthy and environmentally productive activity like walking, instead of taking the bus or a cab (I take it there’s no Uber in this economy?). Following the mental track towards the first opponents, but also enjoying the trip in the meanwhile. Basically the whole meal. It is, at least, a traversed and regular enough path that it seems some improvements like wooden bridges, hopefully with maintenance… I do wonder who is paying for that, tho. Presumably there’s another, more practical road towards the Grass Club that has better vehicular capability (perhaps a bike lane, if going by their likely theming) and sees better maintenance?

Oh well. When has walking into the wilds ever killed anyone. This is not, after all, a world with variegated wild Pokémon, let alone a PMD world :p.

Sometimes one would even catch wild Doduo cutting through! There had been one recently, judging from the tracks across the path.
DUN DUN DUUUUUN

It is time. Tracker mode activate! Follow the tracks and get to the critter and use a Pokéball to– oh right… Riiiight. Card games.

Challenge the Doduo to a card game.

I soon arrived at the fork in the trail. After taking the path to the right, it wasn’t long until I was met with a break in the trees and a view of the side of the Grass Club!
Excuse me but…

alnhvd.jpg

why would you choose that???
why would you choose that???
Like, honestly, if you are gonna ruin a good suit that you don’t have money to wash, by wandering about in the woods, hey do at least try and get a free Doduo out of the exercise!

Walking in, the Club sure does try sticking to the theme, with an unpaved interior lounge. “Mister”™ wonders who not just plant some grass there and honestly while I can’t think of much good reasons, the need for extra maintenance does is one. Nothing that a holed brick road can’t fix (and it allows for decent drainage).

Being dapper never hurt anyone, and I wasn’t going to have the ladies in the all-girl club put up with anything less than my best.

Mr-Gentleman-Transparent-Background-Small-Borders.png

Attire in order, I crossed the threshold of the Grass Club.
Well now of course it’s never hurt anyone… except the pocket lining. Can you think how costly it’s gonna keep this nice suit washed from dirt, pollen and stuff? Like, that’s money we don’t currently have!

(If the gains from these battles today are gone to buying sports shoes, I’ll can only laugh)

I began to glance about the room.
I first noticed Brittany.
Ah yes. First blood!

Sorry if I’m proooobably overidealizing how cool card game combat is like, once again, YGO is at fault.

Unfortunately, my great success that day was where my trouble began with getting opponents to duel me…
On the one hand, yes, that was gonna stink in the end. On the other hand, I feel like people from the Grass Club would be the more willing to experiment against a new deck, in particular if it’s from a reputable contender. If Nikki’s still around she can speak well on the situation and help us advance the plot! :p

Next, I noticed Kristin.
Last, I noticed Heather.
No Karens? We’re good.

Because she looked so much like Nikki from long ago, it stirred many feelings in me; adoration, nostalgia, hope… and deep regret.
No no no no, “Mister”™, there can be only one feeling. BLOOODLUST!!

Or fear of running out of coin. Either is fine.

My thinking back then was so narrow-minded; to have the life you want and the girl you want, you had to become the best at the Pokemon TCG!
Take it from a certain Ashnime: that doesn’t work lol.

Also, oooh reminiscing mode! (I really enjoyed the reminiscing scene from the prologue)

Those were the best days of my life. So full of possibility and wonder, yet without the full weight of responsibility
Teenagers! [*shakes fist*]

So we have a triangle thing going on in the past. You know the triangle. No, not the starter triangle! There was “Mister”™, there was Nikki, and there was Isaac. Friends (or even friends-with-benefits) become more distant as time goes on, and in the end, sometimes three’s too much for a duet, I guess.

In my pursuit of her… I had left her behind…
Banger lines of 2026 (well, 2025) that would make Plato not envy our current times.

In the end, sometimes when you dedicate too much to a craft, all you are left with in the end is the need, the need for speed. Often people say spite is a powerful motivator and in this case there even seems to be a bit of it here powering our MC’s way to Championdom, but also the usual advice that comes along with is is that the top is a lonely place, as we already saw in the prologue.

My grandfather’s words yet again rang true: That it is not the destination in life that is important… but the journey.
Did I vote yet for more Grandpa screentime? No? Just sayin’, I’d totally befine with it.

We are thrown back to reality, however, with Heather already explaining that the meta is locked and there’s no point in a trade you know is locked into a losing match. Reminds me a bit of the impressions some of the characters get during Last Year at Marienbad, a movie precisely about a player locked into a game with a very specific meta.

I gave my best confident smile. “Heather! Today things are far different! I am already the Champion! Today I am here to give your club the first crack at winning against my new all-common card deck; ‘FlashFire!’ I drew my deck from my pocket and fanned a few cards out for her to see.
Important lesson in life: if you have no rizz, have “car salesman charm” as a backup plan. [*sagenods*]

As soon as she’s explained the new testing meta, heather goes on to find cannon foddercompetitors. The idea of “no rare cards in the deck” already helps sell the experimentation if the idea of getting a première of the new deck doesn’t already.

Also, Nikki is there.

tcg2_nikki_loss-png.19681

Come on, we all know what that stare is for. DUN DUN DUUUUN.

(Also, another life lesson: good rizz begins with good eye contact, so get to training that one NOW!)

Suddenly Brittany approached and held out her deck, snapping me away from my thoughts. “You’re on, Mister!”
And we’re ON!!! We get the Battle Tarp, courtesy of our protag, and we can get to experience the new deck.

She turned her gaze away from the roof and back to me with her head titled with widened eyes. “I sure was surprised when I learned that, past beginner-level, almost all duelists play on the floor!”
Don’t let YGO-ers learn that! They are already enough of an issue as-is! XD

We get some nice pre-battle conversation (it’s not really banter, it’s noticeably more casual and geared towards reminiscing and comparing the outside world than anything else) and then we get striaght to the hand, which includes Gust of Wind, a card that triggers switchouts. This might get interesting for the opening session, in-universe, because it means the strategy is to test the deck’s viability against as wide a portion of the opponent’s deck in a single go as possible.

She proceeded to her turn and drew a card, attaching her energy for the turn on her benched Bellsprout Lv. 11. An odd choice considering her Scyther Lv. 23 in the active slot was left with none.
I do have faith in a Scyther! Ever one that is merely a drawing! Those things are dangerous and can handle themselves, and also most art I can recall of the trading cards up to about the EX era makes them look quite cool.

This meant I drew four cards instead of doing nothing. As for my cards:
[…] Ponyta Lv. 8
And the flame begins.

“Don’t think you can scare me with all those cards! You can still only attach one energy per turn and you can’t evolve any mon the first turn they are placed! Also, you can only attack once per round!”
Bold words for cannon fodder! But also, a decent if sliiiightly forced way to get reminded of some of the most basic rules that one could reasonably believe, sometimes, are taken for granted.

Ponyta Lv. 8 is set in position and we get the first attack in not a Fire attack but a kick this time so as to not rely on random chance (that also costs stock). The response is to bench a Weedle and then set things up to rotate Scyther off the turn immediately, costing us cool bug screentime but also gives us the first KO in favour of “Mister”™, with Bellsprout Lv. 11 going down.

Subsequent operations have Brittany bring in a Pinsir which is no Scyther alas, but things are well set up so that “Mister”™ can keep his opponent from building up an upper hand, and while our glorious Ponyta gets PSN’d in the process, a quickie Switch fixes that.

Brittany dragged the fingers of both hands across her face. “Why are ALL your coin-flips heads?! Nooo!”
Because he’s ahead in the game! Get it? A-head? No?

And as further proof that “Mister”™ is ahead, he brings our glorious Ponyta back and proceeds to KO another opponent card in the process, making a 2-out-of 4.

Scyther comes next for the screentime wins, with a Grass Energy attached for good measure, and the paper critter nails the screentime by taking out our Glorious Ponyta!

Brittany nodded while smiling. “Awesome! When you use this deck I can actually KO your mon!”
Ooooh the fresh breath of actually facing some risk in life.

With two Bill, surely I would draw something of use! I played both of them:
[…] Dark Rapidash
Aaaaah good ol’ environmental storytelling. Was this a shōnen fight and not a TCG, this could be reparsed as our once-defeated and glorious Ponyta taking the cuffs off and bulking up for the comeback.

I swapped Dark Rapidash back to the deck for a Ponyta Lv. 8 and played it.
Noooo! I mean yes, but noooo!

Anyway it all means cool Ponyta screentime. Continuation of the attack however falls upon Voltorb’s task to complete and that suffices to bring Scyther down to half HP. To secure that particular win, we get to evolve the Ponyta and with increased attack, Scyther goes down by the end of the turn.

One more attack and the game would be mine!
famous last words.

Brittany decided to go down swinging. She brought out a Bellsprout Lv. 11,
Kudos to her, and also thematically fitting wording.

Still, in the end that’s of no help and “Mister”™ secures what I’m reading is a 4-1 win.

Kristin steps in next, and could have featured good Scyther and Venomoth screentime, but the rundown is offscreen and very similar to what Brittany went through, so I’m guessing it was a 4-2 at best. Dark Rapidash earned its offscreentime (I just coined that word) awesomeness here.

Kristin had tears running down her face. “What IS this?! How can I lose to a deck of ALL COMMONS!?”
famous questions uttered by French aristocracy.

This leaves Heather as the last opponent and she at least comes in with the attitude to make an effort for a different experience.

tcg2_heather-png.19677

Alas, it was not meant to be, and her deck goes down in flames as well, although she still has enough confidence and regain that she hopes the experience was useful as a deck test scenario, as originally intended.

I replied back softly, […] “If all goes well, I’ll also test my deck against your mother.”
Oh you silly+, there are more ways to recoup that lost time besides, ahem, sliding your deck against the mother* XD.

Aaaaanyway, that’s one test session done, and as the first team to ever lose against the new deck the Grass Club does send the wish to have everyone else get pummeled so that they are not remembered unfondly as the “only jokers to lose against the upstart”, I guess. Still, good wishes are good wishes.

My time in the club was short indeed. All-commons or not, type advantage was type advantage.
And this is one way the TCG is different from the mainline games, where at least for the regualr game, level difference trumps everything else barring type immunities.

Before I left the club, I caught Nikki with a determined look upon her face. Now was not the time for our duel, though…
Yup, that look.

Not yet. But oooh is that conversation going to be interesting.

My next destination would be the Water Club.
There we go then, for next review, my scoring will be 8.8/Too Much Water!

All in all a good chapter with a lot of hidden (and not) promises for lore and character interaction. Seeing the “paper cutout” screentime for Ponyta and Scyther was pretty good because honestly Ponyta (Rapidash) and Scyther are really cool mons.

The idea of testing the new deck “ground up” and more in-the-bare, in the sense of going against cannon fodder from the get-go instead of running an experimental test against a second-tier opponent, as one would probably be inclined to do when one already has standing experience so as to “shortcircuit” the experiment, does stand as an interesting indicator that this is, so far, as much for the love of the game as is for getting back to the competitive circuit somehow. When you love the game, one of the easiest ways to share the love of the game is with beginners, after all, no matter how advanced level you are. That’s a thign that Monster Hunter multiplayer has taught me, and is a standing evidence that “Mister”™ is willing to take the time and do the actual legwork of getting his new deck well tested.

And if he gets to enjoy it in the meantime and catch a IRL (in-universe) Doduo along the road, the better!

But still, that fork on the road that led to the Doduo on the untaken path but to the competitive sport on the taken road does serve a nice narrative parallel to the fork in “Mister”™’s past life (and love-life), what with the questions that now emerge about the untaken path.

Will we get more? Will the potential villain that would be the other pupil of Ms. Wem, that I invented in last review, learn about this recent “re-development” of longing stares and kidnap Heather and/or Nikki as bargaining chips in the Final Duel? Will “Mister”™ actually get to catch or adopt a Doduo? Will he have to hand-wash his suit for a couple weeks until the economy improves? (real 2026 vibes btw)

Review (Ch.1)

…Perhaps not to Soon™ as I had said, but stuff is mostly here.

The day of new adventure comes. After all, it’s time to MAKE MONEY!!! Dread it, run from it, expenditures always come.
Money. Because it has to start somewhere!

Consider: acquiring things to decorate homes costs money. Money that we have yet to make! Instead, enjoy the free space. Once the Diogenes hits strong and your living room is full of stack of boxes of VHS movies about card game players you’ll never watch, it’s never coming back.
People do have a tendency to hoard things the longer they are around, don't they? :mewlulz:

My two OCs with Flash Fire approve.

Free piece of advice if you ever plan on cross-posting this to sites like AO3: leave a section link to, or an extra copy of, the deck listing that was provided in the previous paragraph. (Then again, who am I kidding, if a reader of yours is gonna track the mechanics that closely, they likely already have three extra tabs open solely because of this fic, lol)
So, I've tried experimenting with an idea to help with that. I've recently started implementing hovertext to show what various cards do in the duels. I'm hoping that will help readers easily remain in the know.

Re-listing the deck again in the chapter seems like it would be too much of a hassle for the reader to scroll up and down. I'll just let them open a new tab for it instead, if they are curious.

So, “Mister”™ engages in a healthy and environmentally productive activity like walking, instead of taking the bus or a cab (I take it there’s no Uber in this economy?).
Oh, he could get there in all sorts of ways. It's just within walking distance and he felt like walking.

Following the mental track towards the first opponents, but also enjoying the trip in the meanwhile. Basically the whole meal. It is, at least, a traversed and regular enough path that it seems some improvements like wooden bridges, hopefully with maintenance… I do wonder who is paying for that, tho.
Hmm! Probably the government of TCG Island. That government is an AI: The Oracle. This will be lore will be dropped and expanded on in later chapters.

Presumably there’s another, more practical road towards the Grass Club that has better vehicular capability (perhaps a bike lane, if going by their likely theming) and sees better maintenance?
I mean, there are regular roads and stuff too. That was just a walking trail that one should be able to bike on too.

Oh well. When has walking into the wilds ever killed anyone. This is not, after all, a world with variegated wild Pokémon, let alone a PMD world :p.
Ah, but if you flip it around, you can see that him walking alone in the woods isn't considered dangerous by him. Instead it's considered peaceful. That's just the kind of place TCG Island is.

DUN DUN DUUUUUN
Everyone seems to think that Doduo ends up being THE Doduo. :mewlulz: I just wanted to establish that wild Doduo do roam the island.

It is time. Tracker mode activate! Follow the tracks and get to the critter and use a Pokéball to– oh right… Riiiight. Card games.
Yep. No Pokeball's in this world, I'm afraid. They have yet to invent them.

Challenge the Doduo to a card game.
Challenge a Doduo to a card game?? Just how crazy do you think this fic is! :unquag:

Yeah, the Grass Club is a pretty welcoming place. Probably the most of all the clubs, generally speaking.

Perhaps I'll give his grandfather a full flashback scene. But if I do, it will come much later in the story at a moment that is much more impactful.

We are thrown back to reality, however, with Heather already explaining that the meta is locked and there’s no point in a trade you know is locked into a losing match. Scyther's are cool for sure. And in the TCG they are properly effective instead of being fairly weak like their game counterparts are.

And the flame begins.

Bold words for cannon fodder! But also, a decent if sliiiightly forced way to get reminded of some of the most basic rules that one could reasonably believe, sometimes, are taken for granted.
Well, this is unique because it's the first chapter with a duel. I just wanted to make sure the readers had the basic rules covered so they wouldn't be too lost. You won't see this kind of forced explanation anywhere else in the fic.

Ponyta Lv. 8 is set in position and we get the first attack in not a Fire attack but a kick this time so as to not rely on random chance (that also costs stock). *The Pokemon Trading Card Game for Gameboy Color:

TCG_EN_boxart.png

A classic game with a sequel too! Sadly, the sequel never officially released outside Japan. Eventually, a high-quality fan-made English translation surfaced!

The sequel includes many additional: cards, improved pixel art, improved opponent AI, characters, locations, music, and a new story beyond the original game. It even provides post game content: nine powerful card duelists known as ghostmasters. Better in every way from the original, these things combined as the ultimate experience of the card game in its original form.

In the original game, you compete with your rival, Ronald, to gather master medals from the various eight clubs, and then challenge the four Grand-Masters to earn their legendary Pokemon cards: Dragonite, Zapdos, Moltres, and Articuno.

Battles:
'Battles' are card duels played by me in the game. So, the story doubles as a lets-play! This forms the narrative framework. For some duels, I added details afterwards without changing the original outcomes to preserve the lets-play. Level of details usually depends on the opponent and stakes. Not all duels have or need full details.

Chapter/Arc Structure:
  • Intro, Prologue, & 1 = Opening (9.8k words)
  • 2-14 = Duels vs Club Members (35.7k words)
  • 15-23 = Duels vs Club Masters (19.2k words)
  • 24-30 = Climax (21k words)
  • 31-33 = Epilogue (10.5k words)
  • 34-38 = Bridge to Book Two (10k words)

Special Thanks:
To @K_S for being an amazing beta reader and friend to me. K_S has been a mentor to me for the majority of my writing hobby. This helped me improve far faster than I would alone. K_S has written many wonderful fics here on TR and on AO3 here.

To all who reviewed my fic. I greatly improved from the collective feedback of TR's amazing community. I'm glad I chose here to post my fic!

Also to bulgarian_kid from the gamefaqs message board here. Without his positive reaction to the rough alpha version of my fic, I would have lacked the inspiration to pursue writing. One pivotal comment from him was all it took:*
this is pretty normal looking to me lets dive in head first

A classic game with a sequel too! Sadly, the sequel never officially released outside Japan. Eventually, a high-quality fan-made English translation surfaced!

The sequel includes many additional: cards, improved pixel art, improved opponent AI, characters, locations, music, and a new story beyond the original game. It even provides post game content: nine powerful card duelists known as ghostmasters. Better in every way from the original, these things combined as the ultimate experience of the card game in its original form.

ooo u really did go alot with the retro games pokemon trading game for the gameboy is a title that i've never ever heard of its very rare to hear something unheard of from the era of retro games

so its a classic yea never heard of it man but we will be looking at the chapters to confirm it.
there was even a sequel? damn they really wanted to promote tcg eh? well inside japan of course but a fan-made translation surfacing is actually a dub for other people in the world the (pun intended)

A tcg video game still having a rival feels like the pokemon gods want every game to have a rival , instead of gyms they have clubs which is interesting when i read the prolouge a bit i did see our champ is in the fire club while billy wants to be in the fighting club (Yes i read further than i reviewed) having the elite four be Grand-Masters is like epic it isn't just elite four being overshadowed by the champion , them actually give you a reward instead of "letting you a step further to be the champ" is something i wanna see in games now and they aren't just some normal ass pokemon they're legendaries for crying out loud TCG island being the only island in the first game is so like i'm stuck here and in the universe the 3 islands (idk about the third one read it in the prolouge) but Team GR feels like team rocket again so like -1 star i guess but you actually having to drive them off and defeat them on their home turf! its not a basement not a lab a damn turf is so epic +2 stars.
Well my final review gives 6/6 stars great fan fic intro honestly.
Edit: oop wait i forgot about somethings

okay so yea more stuff here the word count here is crazy even if its been a year
idc about the soundtrack but the fact you commissioned art blows my mind i won't be going to that level for my fic (this isn't an ad ok its just my expectations)
the battles are card duels is nice you including the story doubles as a lets-play is like i should read the story and then play the game
you actually having a framework and also added details afterwards for some is great i hope this story peaks and i'm definitely not taking some inspiration as my fan fic is completely different (again it's not an ad guys).

We meet again Tango! Ready to review Chapter 5 of your story. Let the rocket launch!
No science needed, I assure you.
Track 29.5 – a G minor for that sweet suspense of [preparing for a battle]. Ready the camera, set the stage, and let it spiral into ACTION!
the track sounds wonderful on a piano btw

About the first illustration: can’t help but notice David’s stained finger. Perhaps stylistic?

Rick caught them all with the Feathermaster before they could touch the ground
Talk about efficiency! :copyka:

I didn't leave the symposium just to have ONE game like that! Please give me another chance
Aww, I might have found a favorite side-character!

Track 29.7 – an odd F major with the rhythm of a duel. Might be just me, but the melody evokes [profound longing] over [the thrill of a battle].

Dark Rapidash
Caught one! Within “Dark Rapidash” description, there’s “any benched Pokmeon, choose 1”
every subsequent dark rapidash return might have this as well

It’s nice to see the way you highlight cards and describe those. Very immersive for all who wish to learn about the game.
hopefully they are all the same texts, as i'm not reading every single one

Almost missed David’s deck:
He had a Nidoran ♀ Lv. 13 as active with Zubat Lv. 10 and Bulbasaur Lv. 12 on the bench
How do these cards even synergize with each other? David’s got the equivalent of summoner, cheap healer, and two mini tanks!
He then benched a Venonat Lv. 15
Let’s not forget this support card, which, spoiler alert, was never used in this battle.

Overall, David legit had no shot at winning without Energy Removal. Where are their support cards when they need those?
Can’t wait to get to the point where adversaries start using support cards proficiently.

"Fantastic duel data!" Rick held up a piece of chalk
A short relief from the battle, I see. Without it, I would not benefit from the additional feath- I mean, breath we deserve after that action sequence!

He took his hat and turned it around backwards on his head
If you also turn out to have a Pikachu, I will personally call Jessie, James, and Meowth, just for you.

He had Arbok, Nidoking, and Weezing
Wait, you have [almost] the same Pokémon as the trio?!
OVER HERE, guys! This twerp’s got some style within!

And, of course, this kid inherits Team Rocket’s flair for defeat.
“Don’t youse t’ink he might be one of us?” Meowth
“How dare you compare us with that twerp, notescrambler!?” Jessie, ambiguously referring to Meowth, [or was it me?]
“It feels like an Easter egg from an author’s book, but I just can’t name it.” James
talk about writing dialogues on the fly

Track 30 — an [F major? C major with a Bb?] that burrows a C# sometimes. The melody mixes joy with inner peace, ideal for the upcoming interactions.

This is the kind of thing that's worth investigating
Perhaps it’s because you guys are battling someone with the experience of a champion? I mean, it couldn’t be clearer, could it?
Still, lovely [couple of friends] this is gonna turn into.

And MC and his friends continue their journey together, their hopes set high for their arrival at Fire Club. Who knows the kind of opponents MC will face there, or what experiments Rick will do with Gotan’s feathers. That’s all for the next chapter.
Exit narrator, enter beta-reader.
Honestly, I was engaged in this chapter from start to finish. Starting from setup, going through battles, and heading to the [grouping up] with Rick, all the scenes flowed seamlessly. In three words: engaging action chapter.

Our four-prize duel began. This time, my only mon in hand was Doduo Lv. 10, so I played it
Cue the action theme!

Since he was out of mon, that made me the victor
Wait, is the battle already over? Where is the fun in that?

"Very well, David." I smiled. "I'll grant you one more. Hopefully your luck will be better
Ha! So that was a [preparation of sorts] for the battle. Let the real fun begin!

In this case, I opted to go all in on Voltorb Lv. 8. It was more fun that way and arguably the best chance to win
In case we miss out on MC’s aggressive playstyle. Consistent and exciting at the same time!

That allowed me to claim the fourth and final prize. Victory was mine
End of battle. New beginnings await.

I trust you have no objection with your 'wing man' joining you on your little expedition around the island?"

Gentle4.png

"Free feather clean-up and an entertaining house guest! Why not?" I chuckled
Our very first new beginning, since the end of the battle. Rolling along!

Furthermore, this chapter does not hinder reader experience or show systemic flaws.
at least none i could think of
In that case, I will highlight two minor issues I found within, followed by a minor development I would like to discuss:

Firstly, the [cards with a dotted underline] do not work on mobiles. The reason is lack of cursor to hover above the text.
Now, this might be one of those website logistic issues. Still, I figure you would benefit from knowing it.

Secondly, one line that left me confused:
It was now time to use Gust of Wind. I played it and dragged out his Nidoran ♂ Lv. 20 and KOed it with Group Spark
Does it mean MC first force-benched Nidoran, to then knock it out?
I then inferred Nidoran was already benched and dragged into play. But then, a few lines earlier:
David played a Nidoran ♂ Lv. 20
This implies David placed his Nidoran on the [active Pokémon] slot. Otherwise, he played a Pokémon that was not mentioned in the text.
Correct me if my logic does not work.

Finally, Gotan’s reaction. The minor development for discussion:
Gotan made a clicking sound as he looked away
Scenes like this fuel character development. Readers wander through the next chapters, wondering how Gotan will turn out to be. And judging from [your profile picture], there might be a bright future ahead of the Pokémon.
and honestly, jessie, james, and meowth are to me what gotan might be to you
Thank you for reading my review + beta-read. Ready for the upcoming adventures!
And reviews, of course.

the track sounds wonderful on a piano btw
As usual your commentary on the soundtrack is appreciated! :veelove:

About the first illustration: can’t help but notice David’s stained finger. Perhaps stylistic?
Most pixel art in the fic was not commissioned and is official graphics from the game. David is one of those.

Aww, I might have found a favorite side-character!
If you like him, I bet there will be many others you will like too! :eyes:

Track 29.7 – an odd F major with the rhythm of a duel. Might be just me, but the melody evokes [profound longing] over [the thrill of a battle].
Thanks for the input! I'll have another listen to it and consider.

Caught one! Within “Dark Rapidash” description, there’s “any benched Pokmeon, choose 1”
every subsequent dark rapidash return might have this as well
Oh no... I'm glad you found this but now I'll have to go fix them all! :copyka:

It’s nice to see the way you highlight cards and describe those. Very immersive for all who wish to learn about the game.
hopefully they are all the same texts, as i'm not reading every single one
Im glad the hover text is well received by you! :veelove:

Almost missed David’s deck:

How do these cards even synergize with each other? David’s got the equivalent of summoner, cheap healer, and two mini tanks!
Some of the opponent decks in the game are really not that good lol

Let’s not forget this support card, which, spoiler alert, was never used in this battle.

Overall, David legit had no shot at winning without Energy Removal. Where are their support cards when they need those?
Can’t wait to get to the point where adversaries start using support cards proficiently.
That's going to be a while. But opponents who use them DO exist and you will see them eventually!

A short relief from the battle, I see. Without it, I would not benefit from the additional feath- I mean, breath we deserve after that action sequence!
:mewlulz:

If you also turn out to have a Pikachu, I will personally call Jessie, James, and Meowth, just for you.

I love how you just randomly inject the trio into the review! :mewlulz:

Track 30 — an [F major? C major with a Bb?] that burrows a C# sometimes. The melody mixes joy with inner peace, ideal for the upcoming interactions.
:okgon:

Perhaps it’s because you guys are battling someone with the experience of a champion? I mean, it couldn’t be clearer, could it?

:veelove:

And MC and his friends continue their journey together, their hopes set high for their arrival at Fire Club. Who knows the kind of opponents MC will face there, or what experiments Rick will do with Gotan’s feathers. That’s all for the next chapter.
Sounds like the narrator for the Pokemon anime. :eyes:
Exit narrator, enter beta-reader.
:veelove:

Honestly, I was engaged in this chapter from start to finish. Starting from setup, going through battles, and heading to the [grouping up] with Rick, all the scenes flowed seamlessly. In three words: engaging action chapter.
Awesome! :veelove:

You may be surprised, but I consider this to be the weakest chapter in the entire book. If you liked this, your going to LOVE this as it gets farther in! :eyes:

Wait, is the battle already over? Where is the fun in that?
Indeed. That's why I let a rematch happen with David.

Ha! So that was a [preparation of sorts] for the battle. Let the real fun begin!
:okgon:

In case we miss out on MC’s aggressive playstyle. Consistent and exciting at the same time!
:veelove:

Furthermore, this chapter does not hinder reader experience or show systemic flaws.
at least none i could think of
Input like that is completely valid too and great to hear! Thanks! :veelove:

In that case, I will highlight two minor issues I found within, followed by a minor development I would like to discuss:

Firstly, the [cards with a dotted underline] do not work on mobiles. The reason is lack of cursor to hover above the text.
Now, this might be one of those website logistic issues. Still, I figure you would benefit from knowing it.
Yeah... Nothing I can do about that though, unfortunately...

Secondly, one line that left me confused:

Does it mean MC first force-benched Nidoran, to then knock it out?
I then inferred Nidoran was already benched and dragged into play. But then, a few lines earlier:

This implies David placed his Nidoran on the [active Pokémon] slot. Otherwise, he played a Pokémon that was not mentioned in the text.
Correct me if my logic does not work.
So, you always have to have an active Pokemon. If you don't you move one from the bench to active. If you have no money at all, you lose. When you play a new mon, you already have one as active, so you play it to the bench instead. So he needed gust of wind to switch it with the active Mon so it could be attacked.

Finally, Gotan’s reaction. The minor development for discussion:
A bit of a quirk of Gotan.

Scenes like this fuel character development. Readers wander through the next chapters, wondering how Gotan will turn out to be. And judging from [your profile picture], there might be a bright future ahead of the Pokémon.
and honestly, jessie, james, and meowth are to me what gotan might be to you
The series is in a large part about Gotan.

Thank you for reading my review + beta-read. Ready for the upcoming adventures!
And reviews, of course.
Awesome! Looking forward to your next one when you get a chance! :veelove:

yea also only diary entries in the prolouge is what i'll be reviewing which is about 5 paragraphhs
I’m now officially the TCG Island Champion!
greninja! (wow he is a champion in the start of the story interesting!)
Wins against countless opponents in the Pokemon Trading Card Game allowed me to challenge and defeat the now-former Champion, Ronald.
ninja! (wow the rival from the original game is the is the former-champion? our mc wins countless games damn is bro the red of tcg?)
Strangely, Ronald stood no chance in either of our games... I graduated with highest honors from Pokemon Card Elite University for a chance at the title
nin-ja (the first line is setting something that Ronald held back , and our mc graduating daayuum Ash never graduated and graduating so to get the title wow that's better than most games you just win battles)
I hadn't anticipated winning by a landslide. It seemed I prepared far more than needed, but how could that be true? It was the most important title a person on our island could hold!
[coughing] okay fine i can't keep the greninja voice , so yea bro actually won by a landslide wow bro is op as #### , and bro suspecting him holding back is the perfect i knew you did it but can't prove moment.
My unrestricted deck, 'Mystic Fire',
that deck name is cool , cool points to you sir! 😎
was powerful with plenty of rare cards
oh nice bro is really op damn.
but I could have made other decks to rival it if I wanted
this showed that the champ title bro has is deserved :quag:
It was crafted out of appreciation for Arcanine.
appreciation for arcanine in a card game? the cards aren't even alive? like huh but i don't wanna concrit so yea someone could explain to me it woud be great! :okgon:
With its high 100HP, support from Alakazam
Okay so yea arcanine is a beast with 100 hp but yea level 50-60 pokemon could easily just out hp it , if it wasn't tcg idk about anything if it's tcg i have never played a game of tcg except me and my friends actually played the rock paper scissors version where bro added a points system and if your card had a rock and the other opponent had paper and he would take the card so a normal could be 1000 points to the shuffing or a 100 points one it was pretty random and fun!
and the legendary promo version of Moltres, Arcanine was a force to be reckoned with.
this line essentially shows that bro had a ####ing moltres??? nani? and also Arcanine if bro arcanine could talk he would say to his opponent pokemon "OMAE WA MOU SHINDEIRU" (yall can get the reference easily)
My strategy provided all the energy needed and kept damage off.
Wat's energy?
My foes stood virtually no chance of victory after I completed the setup.
ok so wow bro is unbeatable... the thing in the start of the common only deck is just anticipation for me.
Regardless of ease, I held the title of Champion and my card journey left me with a lot of money to show for it.
so bro got $$$ with champion title NOICE.
For my 28th birthday this year, I purchased a home in an upper class neighborhood. I also purchased a set of red formal-wear suits. A trip to the barber squared things away to complete my new look. I thought it came together quite nicely. My light skin contrasted with my brown hair, hazel eyes, and red suit. I needed to look my best for the tutoring session with Billy, the 6 year old boy. His prestigious parents sought me out to help him with the most important part of growing up in our world: how to play the Pokemon Trading Card Game.
faaah this is jam packed first bro got money and said yea bro imma become the chivalrous gentleman , and bro literally is tutoring this fic is one of the first fics when i heard the champ is a tutor?!?!? damn plot twist
I believed my late grandfather would approve. He always stressed speaking well, dressing sharp, excellent manners,
well his gramps was a gentleman indeed.
Oh yea can we just admire the cover tho for a moment its so peak.
ok back to the review
and, above all, kindness.
he is a gentleman!
He was a powerful duelist in his own right and saw me attain the rank of Champion before his passing
he was powerful wow , but the line
saw me attain the rank of Champion before his passing.
😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 his gramps just saw him become champ and then he said bye bye grandson.
I owed so much to him for how he raised me practically my whole life
respect for gramps right here.
even though my parents passed away before I could even form any memories of them
oh the #### does that happen right after respecting gramps 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭.
Living in a way to make my grandfather proud was my primary mission in life even if my reason for striving to attain my Champion title was born of a different motivation...
like i seriously wanna his different motivation here , and the wanting make his grandpa proud wow. Gramps is proud now (FAAAAAAA).
But regarding my grandfather, I inherited this diary from him as a family heirloom that is meant to be used.
oooo a family heirloom could be thousands of years old? we don't know.
This is my first time writing in it. I will carry on the writing tradition until it is time for me to pass it to a future child or loved one.
i like how bro immediately wrote in it so like his gramps died recently?
. I shall keep it with me at all times. I even plan to include some pictures!
bro literally adding pictures feels like breaking the fourth wall for some reason
So how's this for a review Tango?

Amusing way of opening a review! :mewlulz:

Thanks for reviewing the first section of my prologue up to the (2) soundtrack!

greninja! (wow he is a champion in the start of the story interesting!)
Yep! I decided this fic was a post-journey journey! :okgon:

Kind of like yours with Ash! :eyes:

ninja! (wow the rival from the original game is the is the former-champion? our mc wins countless games damn is bro the red of tcg?)
Bingo! That's pretty much it! MC is a TCG BEAST!

nin-ja (the first line is setting something that Ronald held back , and our mc graduating daayuum Ash never graduated and graduating so to get the title wow that's better than most games you just win battles)
It may SEEM that way, but Ronald only held back a little by not crafting a better deck. Even if he tried his true best, he would not have won.

[coughing] okay fine i can't keep the greninja voice ,
:mewlulz:

so yea bro actually won by a landslide wow bro is op as #### , and bro suspecting him holding back is the perfect i knew you did it but can't prove moment.
Oh he is definitely OP. Being able to win duels with ALL COMMONS is no joke! It would be like trying to win a Pokemon League tournament with no evolved Pokemon.

that deck name is cool , cool points to you sir! 😎
Why thank you, kind sir! :okgon:

oh nice bro is really op damn.
Yessss :veelove:

this showed that the champ title bro has is deserved :quag:
Indeed it is. Very much so!

appreciation for arcanine in a card game? the cards aren't even alive? like huh but i don't wanna concrit so yea someone could explain to me it woud be great! :okgon:
An appreciation for the card and the style. Cards have art. They can look cool. Some cards are better than others. He appreciates the style of Arcanine as well as it's effectiveness in duels.

The cards are very different than the games. The highest HP in the game is 120 and the highest damage is 100. The highest HP mon tend to have 100 HP max. Some mon have HP as low as 30.

this line essentially shows that bro had a ####ing moltres??? nani? and also Arcanine if bro arcanine could talk he would say to his opponent pokemon "OMAE WA MOU SHINDEIRU" (yall can get the reference easily)
Yeah, a legendary promo Moltres is no joke. His deck had multiple in it.

Wat's energy?
Energy is what mon need to attack. You attach energy cards to power them up. That unlocks their attacks that you can attack with.

ok so wow bro is unbeatable...
With his original deck? Yeah. Pretty much.

the thing in the start of the common only deck is just anticipation for me.
Restriction to common cards make things WAY more interesting.

so bro got $$$ with champion title NOICE.
Yep! From all those booster packs he won. He already had all the cards he needed, so he sold them and made a ton of money. Cards in this world are like money. Very valuable and worth a lot!

faaah this is jam packed first bro got money and said yea bro imma become the chivalrous gentleman , and bro literally is tutoring this fic is one of the first fics when i heard the champ is a tutor?!?!? damn plot twist
Tis a temporary plot twist. You will see what i mean in your next review probably lol

well his gramps was a gentleman indeed.
:okgon:

Oh yea can we just admire the cover tho for a moment its so peak.
I crafted that banner myself using paint.net! I took original game sprites and used multiple layers to arrange them. Gave it a background color too. I'm quite proud of it! Thanks for mentioning it! :veelove:

😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 his gramps just saw him become champ and then he said bye bye grandson.

respect for gramps right here.

oh the #### does that happen right after respecting gramps 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭.

like i seriously wanna his different motivation here , and the wanting make his grandpa proud wow. Gramps is proud now (FAAAAAAA).
Yeah, MC is a bit sad and lonely despite his success and title. You will see what I mean later. Especially in chapter 1.

oooo a family heirloom could be thousands of years old? we don't know.
THIS!!! WOOOOW! :wowzard: You nailed it. YOU FREAKING NAILED IT!

That diary dates back to when the recorded history of their world began. It is ancient. :veelove:

If you are able to make such an interesting observation, I wonder what ELSE you might pick up?? :eyes:

i like how bro immediately wrote in it so like his gramps died recently?
Correct.

bro literally adding pictures feels like breaking the fourth wall for some reason
Eh... that's fine, I guess. Probably the worst offender of fourth wall breaks.

So how's this for a review Tango?
Not gonna lie, that was a big improvement over your previous one. It looked WAAAAY cleaner than your last one too! Great work! :veelove:

Statistics:
Wordcount of your review: 548 words
Wordcount of fic material reviewed: 464 words
Review density ratio (review wordcount divided by wordcount of fic material reviewed): 1.18
(The higher number the ratio is, the thicker your review is. Thick reviews are great! Also, anything over 1.00 is GREAT! That means your review is LONGER than the material you reviewed! :veelove: Anything over 1.50 is legendary.)

For comparison, here are the statistics for my review for your chapter 2 before you merged chapters and added stuff to it:
Wordcount of my review: 1,080 words
Wordcount of fic material reviewed: 648 words
Review density ratio: 1.66

So, as you can see, my review still had more effort than yours, but yours was FAR from being a bad review! Also, words don't make up the whole picture. Using reaction emoji's and sometimes even pictures from the internet are great too!

I think your next review will be even better. Looking forward to it! :eyes:

Aww I like the image of the Doduo sleeping with its heads stacked up

I can fully identify with one bird shedding so many feathers. Had a budgie who molted more than any other bird I've ever had. I told her I could build a new parakeet with everything she shed!

I for one would like to see this Scyther-themed mailbox.

Why does he decide on the name Gotan? What was his thought process here?

A Doduo being too large to fit through the bus door? I would think seating would be the bigger issue here.

Hahaha do Doduo just shed a heck of a lot to merit this sign? Because otherwise that's a sign of a VERY unhealthy bird to be CONSTANTLY dropping feathers like that. Before the sign I was about to say that I'm concerned for Gotan's health.

What an interesting detail about the floors. I wonder if that will go anywhere later on. Sure is a mysterious island.

Hm, again with the Doduo. So many of them! Goodness! But they find the feathers hard to come by even though there are signs posted in every club SPECIFICALLY about picking up their feathers?

Yeah these are some very strange birds.

Rick oh my god what the hell. Everyone on this island is a nutjob it's so wild. Instant roommates you do not have a choice.

Anyway I like the inclusion of the sprites to convey the characters. It's very novel. And this story keeps getting weirder and weirder!

Hi Blackjack! Long time no see!

Aww I like the image of the Doduo sleeping with its heads stacked up
Thanks! I had it commissioned!

I can fully identify with one bird shedding so many feathers. Had a budgie who molted more than any other bird I've ever had. I told her I could build a new parakeet with everything she shed!
Unlike molting for regular birds, Doduo in the fic are pretty much constantly molting.

Why does he decide on the name Gotan? What was his thought process here?
The answer was already overtly in the chapter.

A Doduo being too large to fit through the bus door? I would think seating would be the bigger issue here.
Can't sit if can't get through door.

Hahaha do Doduo just shed a heck of a lot to merit this sign?
Yes.

Because otherwise that's a sign of a VERY unhealthy bird to be CONSTANTLY dropping feathers like that. Before the sign I was about to say that I'm concerned for Gotan's health.
One would think the constant molting affects their health, but it does not. That is a feature, not an oversight.

What an interesting detail about the floors. I wonder if that will go anywhere later on.
I think I've got an idea for it...

Sure is a mysterious island.
Indeed.

Hm, again with the Doduo. So many of them! Goodness! But they find the feathers hard to come by even though there are signs posted in every club SPECIFICALLY about picking up their feathers?
There used to be more of them. They have been disappearing lately.

Rick oh my god what the hell. Everyone on this island is a nutjob it's so wild. Instant roommates you do not have a choice.
Correct!

Anyway I like the inclusion of the sprites to convey the characters. It's very novel.
Thanks! Most of them are from the game but some of them are commissioned.

And this story keeps getting weirder and weirder!
You've barely scratched the surface on that for this fic. :mewlulz:

Alright, I’ve kept you waiting long enough for an update to that review exchange. Let’s give this thing a quick and dirty bump to get things rolling again:

Chapter 4

May 7th - Night

(26)

After poking around in the lawn for over an hour, Rick finally swung the door open, tossed a couple feathers he was holding into the air and sucked them up with his Feathermaster 5,000.

Gentleman: “... I’m sorry, why do you even have that thing with you right now? Shouldn’t you have left it at the coat rack?”
916590116670144542.webp

He set the glorified vacuum near the door and slumped in my comfy recliner chair in the living room. The sun had almost completely gone down.

I raised an eyebrow. "Did you get a bountiful haul, my good man?"

View attachment 19733

I’m assuming from the emote, that that’s a ‘yes’

"It sucked." Rick snickered, barely holding back a laugh.

I rolled my eyes.

He now had a hand over his face. "The vacuum! You get it?!"

I rolled my eyes harder as he was now laughing.

Ah yes, the Gentleman let a pungeon master into his house. I can already see him regretting this in live-time. Even if I do wonder if these sections would’ve benefitted from more of a glimpse into his mind’s workings / more of a recording of his mood right then.

View attachment 19734

"Heyyyy..." He leaned forward staring at me. "You haven't had any BEER yet!"

Um… do I want to know how many beers this guy has had up to this point? :copyka:

I looked at him and considered the options.

View attachment 20284

Sit here and listen to him drunkenly ramble about things, or join him in the rambling... One or the other. Which should I choose? Did it matter? What did I WANT to do? Decisions, decisions…

Quite a few, apparently. Even if I do wonder if there should’ve been a bit more indication before the after-the-fact mention in the dialogue that Rick went through quite a bit of beer.

(27)

Rick cradled his gut as he laughed and gasped for air, eventually making it to the punchline. "AND THEN!" He strained to contain another convulsion. "The instructor poured out the vial into the TRASH compactor!"

Oh, hello surprise out-of-series music. I can’t say it doesn’t fit a scientist character, though.

We both howled with laughter and somehow wound up on the floor.

View attachment 20280

I looked up at the ceiling with my eyes half closed and a smile plastered to my face. "Instructors are crazy! You ever have Doctor Wem for her competitive play course?"

Okay, Mr. Gentleman, just how much beer have you had since that scene cut anyways? >:V

View attachment 19734

Rick curled up in a ball. "NOOOO!!" Even curled up like a pillbug, Rick still managed to wail like that Skystrider fellow from that one movie I saw. "One semester of that torture was ALL I COULD TAKE! What about you?"

"I took ALL SIX YEARS! Twelve semesters of it." I smiled exactly like a troll face.

Hrm… I feel like we’re veering a bit too far into telling and not showing at the moment. While I get that the Gentleman wouldn’t record every little detail of things happening in a diary, I do wonder if at the very least we should get some more “opinionated commentary” about things.

Rick giggled as he climbed back into his seat. "No wonder you kick the living Mew out of people in the TCG, you psychopath!"

Huh. I’m a bit surprised that they have minced oaths involving Pokémon when only Doduo exist outside of being characters on trading cards.

"Man," I squinted, "I wish I had one of those sandwiches she made..."

[ ] And yet, despite my intoxicated brain having absolute faith that squinting would let me see the sandwich, if not outright make it appear, to my bafflement, it didn't work.

While I could read in between the lines a bit, I kinda felt like the earlier sections didn’t really sell the idea that the Gentleman was sloshed himself at the moment. Though for this particular moment, I feel like things should be hacked up and the Gentleman be described starting to squint because “I want sandwich” a bit more.

Rick's jaw dropped as he rocked back and forth in his seat. "You got WEM to make you a SANDWICH?! How!?"

Gentle3.png

I pushed my lips out like a duck. "No clue! She just gave it to me! Man it was so tasty..."

I can already see the army of fantasy anoles swiveling their heads across dimensions.

"How tasty? One out of ten?"

"Twelve."

Rick took off his glasses and squinted at me. "Dude, you could just say eleven if it's that good."

So what’s the over/under of Gotan getting a sandwich at some point in this story?

"NO!" I shook my head vigorously. "It breaks the scale! Shatters it to little pieces. What you THINK breaks the scale it breaks EVEN HARDER! I want to chomp it! NOW!"

[ ] I grabbed a couch cushion and bit down on it. It wasn't tasty.

Rick raised his arms over his head and wiggled them. "Well good luck with THAT! Unless you got Wem's number!"

I feel like the Gentleman’s narration is a bit too sober for him being drunk enough to munch on his couch cushions at the moment. It would probably make sense to drop in some commentary about things unfolding given that he’s presumably writing this sometime after the fact. (Also it’d be funny bait for mentions of him being hung over or something.)

[ ]

"I COULD HAVE had her number..." I grimaced.

Rick swung his head around like he was dizzy. "DUDE, WHAT?!"

I mean, Rick’s kinda drunk right now, so isn’t him swinging his head around not particularly out of the ordinary? ^^

I leaned back. [ ]

"She wanted to date me and you know what I did?"

Rick's eyes widened as he leaned in. "What?! What did you do!?"

"I told her to buzz off..." I closed my eyes in old shame. "Then she gave me the sandwich and walked away..." I sighed heavily.

Just how many potential romances has the Gentleman let slip through his fingers in the past anyways? :copyka:

[ ] Rick started laughing.

"Oh MAN! How could you be so dumb! Wem was the hottest instructor there by a TON! Super smart too! And dude... she cooks too?"

View attachment 20282

[ ]

"I KNOW!" I groaned. "But I thought I would have OPTIONS after being Champion..."

And you did! They just were all transparent gold diggers, but that’s why you should try to find romance before making it big in life. ^^;

Though I feel like this section would benefit a bit from some expansions in content and getting into the Gentleman’s head a bit more.

Rick held his hands out. "You're single, dude. Should have dated Wem."

I covered my face with my hands. "Yeah... then I wouldn't have to be single..."

I picked myself up off the floor and got back to the couch, but it wasn't very comfortable.

"Dude. That's the table, man. Couch that way." Rick pointed before he started giggling.

No wonder it was so hard!

Ditto here in this section, especially since I kinda do wonder if the Gentleman has some level of “shoulda, coulda, woulda” regarding Wem that he wouldn’t have let go of even after sobering up a bit.

View attachment 20280

I moved to the REAL couch. [ ]

"You know, I've only been drunk once before, but I don't remember much about it! I always thought you were supposed to speak improperly when drunk with slurring of words and such, but look at me! I can speak perfectly normal! I must be special!"

I feel like you’re missing some sort of transition going from “the Gentleman gropes around for his couch” to him speaking. Especially if he has any commentary about this whole scenario that he’d add.

Rick was smiling stupidly. "You ARE special, you idiot! You're the TCG Island Champion!"

Somehow, this was obscenely hilarious. [ ]

We were both full-on laughing before it became more painful than enjoyable to continue.

Another spot here. Like this particular sequence feels a bit too high level and hazy at the moment.

Rick then looked me in the eye, still part smiling, but clearly trying not to. "

What made you become champion anyway?"

I hadn't anticipated needing to watch my words, so I answered with the worst possible answer: the truth!

"Nikki. I did it all for Nikki." I could feel my face flush as I looked away.

Ah yes, I can already tell that things are going to get nice and awkward in short order. Though for your readers who don’t have Spotify accounts, you’d probably find the following YT link a better alternative (I’m pretty sure it’s the same one since ‘Jonne Kokkonen’ is brought up as an alias):

Rick had a confused and unamused look. [ ]

"My SISTER? Dude! Why?!"

See, I knew that things were going to get awkward, even if I didn’t expect it to get awkward for this reason. :copyka:

I do feel that there was a bit more room to expand on Rick’s confused/horrified reaction versus what you presently have, though.

View attachment 20283

"Just because she's your sister doesn't make her bad for others..."

Rick scoffed. [ ]

"If you say so, dude. I care about her a lot, but I'm not seeing it."

Ditto here, really.

View attachment 20283

"Nikki is so perfect." I rambled, ignoring Rick's objection. "I had to become Champion so I could be worthy of asking her out...but she dated Isaac and married him before I could get there..."

Yes, that tends to happen when you put your entire social and personal life on hold to play trading card games, Gentleman.

Rick acted like his hands were an explosion coming out from his brain. [ ]

"DUDE! What the MEW! Nikki kept saying the SAME KIND OF CRAP!" he then started talking in a voice meant to poorly imitate his sister, "oh the gentleman is so amazing! He's so good at the Pokemon TCG! I need to get better at it so I can catch up to him, or he won't want to ask me out!"

Let’s check in on how the Gentleman’s doing right now:

simpsons-ralph-wiggum.gif

[ ]

"What..." I looked at Rick, "are you talking about?"

Rick held his head in his hands. [ ]

"MY DUDE! YOU ARE THICK AS A TREEEEE! Nikki would NOT shut UP about you! Do you know how annoying it was?! I almost went and told you to date her way back then and I was in the middle of my SCIENCE PROJECT!"

I warned you about the card games, bro. Though once again, I feel like this moment would be ripe for expansion, especially if the Gentleman himself has any commentary about all of this from whenever he’s writing this.

View attachment 20282

I started crying. Nothing to be done about it now. It had happened.

Yeah, I figured. Though I feel that a bit more lead-up to the Gentleman breaking down would’ve been called for here.

[ ] Rick was quiet for a moment. [ ]

"Dude... that is SO messed up. It's like a sad drama or some crap... You want her, so you get better at cards. She wants YOU and chases you, but can't get there!"

I could feel the tears continue to flow. "Then why did she MARRY ISAAC?!"

Because she assumed that your true love was card games and she gave up on you?
701429736290910228.webp

"Dude, you serious?" Rick looked up at me over his glasses. "What have you been drinking?"

Beer, obviously.

"Beer." I immediately started giggling as the tears kept falling.

Rick started laughing again too before regaining some semblance of composure. [ ]

"DUDE SHE DIDN'T WANT TO MARRY HIM! She settled for him, man. But she was all upset she couldn't catch up to you! Isaac had a crush on her for years too. It's not like anyone else was knocking, man, so she opened the door, man, she OPENED THE DOOR!"

Ah yes, let’s check in on our beloved protagonist right now:

Gentleman:
bluescreenofdeath-getty.jpg

My tears still weren't letting up. [ ]

"THEN WHY DOES SHE STAY?!"

"Dude. Nikki's always been traditional n' crap, man. Ever since she was little, she said she would never divorce. She ain't going nowhere, man... Sorry, dude..."

View attachment 20281

I gripped the sides of my head. [ ]

"Why am I even here?! I got this Champion title that was supposed to MEAN something but I have NOTHING!"

Close enough, really. Though I feel that we’re kinda glazing over a lot of the Gentleman’s existential crisis right about now.

"Dude, I don't know. That's pretty deep, man. Like, you can have all this stuff and title, but if it doesn't make you happy, like what's the point, man?"

Rick seemed to space out for a moment before abruptly resuming his train of thought. [ ]

"I don't really know what I'm doing either... I just research crap. It's cool figuring stuff out. Somehow I get money for it."

Oh hey, there’s a song for this moment:

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UCz_DF7SQA

View attachment 20282

[ ] I was now feeling full-on sad and getting sleepy.

Rick stumbled over from the recliner and plopped down next to me on the couch while putting his arm on my shoulder. [ ]

"You know, dude? You're alright. You did all that to try to make Nikki happy. Ima be your wing-man ok? I need more feathers from that crazy bird of yours, so I'ma just follow you around and pick up feathers, but if there's some other chick you dig, I use some science or crap to get her to notice you..."

I nodded as we both started getting sleepier...

press-x-to-doubt-la-noire.jpg

Though I suppose I shouldn’t rule it out entirely given the overall tone of this story so far. I do feel like this is another spot where expanding things with more of the Gentleman’s thought process would’ve improved things though.

(28)

My mind and surroundings were a fluffy white haze dancing and fleeting around anything I wasn't focusing on.

Ah yes, the Stein’s Gate music is back.

All of this was familiar. Nikki was there with me as my wife. Had I been awake, that would be an obvious lie, but in the dream, it was a given fact.

I was snuggled up to her in our bed while our kids were in the other room sleeping in.

View attachment 20283

It was everything I could ever want...

If only Nikki could stop elbowing me in the gut…

That’s Rick doing that in reality, isn’t it? Even if I kinda wonder if this dream sequence should’ve had a bit more detail relative to what we got.

Try as I might to enjoy our bliss, she just wouldn't stop with the jabbing!

View attachment 20282

"Nikki, please stop that! I love you!"

But now she was elbowing even harder. I was starting to get nauseous.

Yeah, it’s totally Rick, I can tell.

May 8th

(29)

Suddenly I was awakened to elbowing in my gut!

A voice called out. I recognized Rick's voice. [ ]

"OK! That's quite enough! I can't believe I passed out drunk on you! UGH this hangover is awful!"

So what’s the over/under that someone got this on tape? Even if I feel like it’d be funnier to have the Gentleman realize he’s sleeping on Rick a bit more gradually than this.

Awareness seeped back into my mind. In the waking world, I realized to my horror that I was NOT spooning Nikki in bed... but RICK on my couch!

I can already tell that these two will never, ever bring this up to anyone else beyond their personal journals after this. :copyka:

View attachment 20281

I quickly let go of him so he could get up as I made a silent vow NEVER to drink that much again!

I sat up wiping the drool from my cheek. It was all over the couch pillow. My hair was a mess, and my poor suit was wrinkled after sleeping in it. Luckily, I had spares and could test my new steamer to smooth it out. It was a far cry from the dry-cleaning subscription I wanted, but lack of money made the choice for me.

I’m now morbidly curious as to what “disheveled and hung-over” Gentleman would look like as a picture now.

As I rubbed the crust out of my eyes I felt my side throbbing from the awkward sleeping angle. Rick's jabs likely made it worse... To top it all off, the pounding of my head revealed Rick wasn't the only one with a hangover...

I heard rummaging in the kitchen. "Ugh... where is the coffee??"

I was stretching carefully to avoid more pain. [ ]

"Hold on! I'll be in there in a moment! You do know coffee does not cure a hangover right?!"

"Like Mew it doesn't! Get in here!"

[ ]

I feel like this sequence would benefit a bit more from showing off a bit more of the Gentleman’s thought process as this all happens, especially since his thoughts feel like they’d work better as an ending note in general.

After coffee, breakfast, letting Rick shower and then showering myself, I was back on my familiar couch with Rick on the recliner.

View attachment 20284

I looked at Rick. "I don't think I feel like going out today."

Rick locked eyes with me. I could tell he was beat. "Yeah, me neither. Want to just crash here for the day?"

We spent the rest of the day watching movies and relaxing. We even ordered delivery pizza.

I kinda question if this one-paragraph scene would’ve worked better getting conjoined with the prior scene and expanded a bit more with more introspection from the Gentleman’s perspective.

May 9th

Rick had arranged via his phone for the first member of the Science Club, Erik, to return from the science symposium for one day to duel me.

I'm not sure why I assumed Gotan would still be outside after us being cooped up in the house for probably thirty-six hours, but my assumption proved correct!

… The Gentleman really never just looked outside the window at all in the prior day? Since if Gotan never went anywhere, you’d think that he’d be quite noticeable as a background thing on the prior day’s entry.

Rick had used his back-pack style vacuum, the Feathermaster 5,000, to suck up the feathers outside earlier before we were ready to leave. Still wearing it, now he would only suck up the occasional feather as Gotan molted them. I had no idea how that bird molted so frequently, but was pleased not to have to pick up feathers. Rick also intended to record the data of my matches.

[ ]

Back in the Science Club main room, Erik looked up from from some notes he was jotting at one of the large tables.

You have a superfluous word in the start of your second scene here. Though I feel the prior scene ends a bit abruptly. Even something as simple as noting that the Gentleman left since he had card games to get to I think would’ve made for a better ending note.

View attachment 19735

He had a frown as he placed his finger on the bridge of this glasses to push them up some. "Champion. I'm only here because of Rick's orders. I am MISSING part of the science symposium for this, but I heard you are supplying Doduo feathers, and that Rick can collect data, so lets get this over with."

Straight to the point, as usual.

Small missing punctuation there. Though I actually wonder if we’re going to cliffhanger on a battle here or else if the Gentleman’s just going to curbstomp Erik badly enough that he barely gets a mention in his journal.

Gentle6.png

[ ]

"Very well! Let's see if today is the day I lose with this all-common deck!" I took my seat and smiled.

I feel like it probably would’ve made sense to get into the Gentleman’s head a bit more. Especially if he’s not all the way “there” after his drunken mood crash about Nikki two days ago.

His deck used Nidoran and its various evolutions as well as some normal types. Unfortunately for him, many of his attacks required successful coin-flips and this would prove to be his undoing, or at least make it much faster.

During the battle, I noticed something I had never seen before. The Doduo I played took damage from an attack. The moment the attack was declared, feathers erupted from behind me. I first thought Rick had accidentally switched the Feathermaster 5,000 to reverse until I turned around to see Gotan bruised, laying on the ground, smiling, and being showered in his own feathers floating down!

View attachment 20490

Gotan was taking attacks by Erik's Pokemon cards! The crazy bird loved it!

I actually think that this would’ve been one of those battles that would’ve been worth depicting in more detail. Not necessarily because it would be particularly climactic, but more because it’d be an opportunity to show off more of how Gotan will be interacting with future encounters like this.

View attachment 19733

Rick peered intently while scribbling notes down in a flurry. "Ah! Such an interesting phenomenon! I don't often witness this happening. In conjunction with your all-common deck performance, this is positively riveting!"

The duel soon ended in Erik's defeat.

View attachment 19735

Erik's frown was unchanged. "Yes, yes, you're amazing. Bravo. I'm glad Rick finds me losing duels to be riveting. I'm heading back to the symposium now. I'll be sure to tell David to head back here for tomorrow."

Since it takes a while to get out to the Science Club, I decided it was ok to just have one duel for the day. I returned to the house with both Gotan and Rick tagging along.

Oh, so Rick is going to be sticking around, or at least for a while. Duly noted, then. :copyka:

I think that I’ll leave things off for now since I’m feeling a bit under the weather. But I found myself my getting reminded of just how different and standout this story is as a premise, which you know what, kudos for picking the lane less traveled and owning it. I feel the main standout strength of this chapter was the character focus on the Gentlemen, since it helped get more insight into the Gentleman and his backstory. I also thought that Rick was a fun addition to the story. I’m not fully convinced that he’ll be around for the long term, but he’s been fun to watch so far, and I’m glad he’ll be back for more chapters in this story after this. Once again, the multimedia component added a lot to the reading experience, especially the custom art which helped a lot for visualizing the characters. You really pulled out all the stops for this chapter.

And onto the less fun and more critical parts of this chapter. I’m not really sure how much you intend to further overhaul your chapters that you already published up to this point, but in this chapter, it felt like there were some parts of the prose that were a bit too hazy and high level, and like they’d have benefitted from getting into things in more detail. I also felt like there was room to get a lot deeper into the Gentleman’s thought process, especially since this is a more character-focused chapter and his journal is his space to bare his soul, while we spent a weird amount of time from the outside looking in, especially at moments that could’ve been particularly impactful as the Gentleman grapples with how he inadvertently wound up pushing Nikki away when she genuinely loved him. Lastly, I feel like the first card battle with Gotan riding shotgun should’ve been shown off a bit more. I get that this story generally fast-forwards through the card battles where it’s another “day ending in ‘y’” for the Gentleman, but it did feel a bit weird that we didn’t even get an acknowledgement of what standout cards Erik had in his deck and spent more time focusing on how Gotan took damage from the card battles. For that matter, Gotan is weirdly absent in a way that you’d think wouldn’t be the case where the Gentleman literally just needs to look out his window to see him, which just felt a little strange to me since it was a missed opportunity to get in a bit more humor.

But altogether, I think that things are still quite a bit more put-together than your v1 of this story, and while I still saw areas that I felt would benefit from further polish, things largely accomplished what you set out to in this chapter, and it does a good job at getting us invested in what comes next. Hope the feedback was helpful, @Tango , and I’ll be looking forward to seeing you around again sometime soon.

Hiya! How are ya? Hope you're doing well because I'm finally here for the review I was talking. Apologies if it was later than I promised. Things got a bit busy during CNY so... yeah.

Anywho, let's start off with the introduction stuff:

There's definitely a ton of nice and juicy info for the game the fic is based on. I'll be honest, I thought book two was originally the 1st game's story instead of the sequel but I guess it made sense that it wasn't since it did sorta start off as a 'Mark is already the champion' thing. Also the map for the two islands is pretty cool. Tbh, I thought GR Island would look more like the 1st island because I think I remember there being a lot more forest scenes in book two so it's kinda odd seeing a big percentage of GR Island being this weird brown (Wasteland? Autumn? Mountainey?) place.

The art's pretty cool, especially the pixel art. Tango looks cute and goofy in 'em and Mark has that jazzy, fancy look and I really like how the background on his pixel art is the TCG type symbols.

The soundtracks are as cool as usual. Won't be talking about them much though unfortunately since again don't have a PC to properly listen to them but it's cool to see you putting in a lot of thought into the songs. I tried doing something similar when I was first starting out but it was a lot of effort so good on ya for sticking to it!

And I think that's about it for the introduction. It's definitely a lot more dense compared to other stories that do introductions but I think you put in a good amount of content and context for what game you're basing the fic on and there wasn't a single part where it felt like it was too much. So overall, I think you did a great job pretty summarising the fic's content and it sets some nice expectations for what's about to come.

Quick Summary for Prologue:

Diary stuff. Mark tells us all that's happened. From his new title as the champion to tutoring then becoming broke and selling his deck and then using all commons because people are scared of fighting his full strength.

Chp 1 Summary:

Mark wakes up from his dreams and goes to the Grass club to beat a bunch of kids and then the entire island with his common deck.

Chp 2 Summary:

Mark goes to the Water club and has to fend off all the succubus inhabiting that land and also Joshua. Then he encounters a wild Imakuni and gets a new pet!

Chp 3 Summary:

Mark tries getting rid of bird but bird no wanna so he reluctantly lets it stay as he also thinks it'll make more people wanna fight him because of the silly birdy. We also get introduced to Nikki's brother, a scientist and learn a bit of the lore of the world along with the Ho-Oh thing.

Chp 4 Summary:

Drunk moments ensue and Mark confesses his regrets for the love he lost and almost gets frisky with the little bro because drunk. He beats up a random scientist before going home.

Chp 5 Summary:

Another lovely in-depth battle as Mark stomps his way through the science club and for whatever reason, Gotan hates the scientist bro that's gonna tag along.

Chp 6 Summary:

More duels ensues and Mark actually loses for once! Sure it was because his gambling went wrong but still! A canonical loss!

Chp 10 Summary:

Mark goes to the lightning club (I wonder if the OG version was electric like the card?), and beats up the former champion with his sick after deck of commons! Also we learn some tidbits of Isaac.

Review of Prologue:

So let me just say that this chapter was great. There's a incredible jump in quality compared to when you first started out. Like the characters (even if there's only two so far) are fun and they don't feel like they just have one trait, they actually feel alive in a sense. The dialogue's good, the humour has definitely improved too, I love all the meta jokes sprinkled about. The story flows pretty well and all the exposition blends into the narrative seamlessly and is super interesting since it also kinda tells us Mark's backstory a tinsy bit.

Aside from that though I don't think I have too much to talk about since a lot of this is just exposition I already know about. There are definitely some weak parts though, the section for the explanation on game mechanics is definitely a sharp drop in quality compared to the rest of the chapter but I know it's not supposed to be as good due to it just being explanation upon explanation so I don't think it's too important.

There was also the latter half of the Doduo exposition that felt a little off. I think it's around the part where Mark started talking about buildings being built with Doduo in mind. It's a little weird for him to randomly talk about it I guess. I think it's fine if you skip this bit honestly and just show it subtly in the background instead. Like have Mark just thinking about it when visiting somewhere that has the Doduo stuff or something like that 'cause it just felt out of place compared to everything else since it's not that surprising or weird.

So yeah, that's it for the prologue. Let's move on to Chp 1!

Review of Chapter 1:

Okay, so Chp 1. The dream sequence was pretty cool and it's certainly well written with the subtle hints of things not being entirely true, what with the fuzziness and all that. It's a good way to show the readers that it's a dream and not something that's actually true.

I kinda find it funny just how much Mark regrets his past. It's a nice way to sprinkle bits of his past here and there and I love how it still affects how he acts to this day. Although I'll be honest, it did get kinda annoying after the third time of him just hammering in that point. You saved it when the three grass girls were introduced and showed exactly how it affects him and his interactions.

And honestly, I'm not sure if it's just my tastes or if it's something that's a problem. I just think that him talking about the same regret like more than three times in a couple hundred words got a bit tiring. (Btw to be more specific, I'm talking about his walk to the grass club here)

The rest of the chapter was fun. The first duel is also something that was engaging. It's what I'd initially expected when I picked up book 2 like a year ago. There's the nice setup, fun dialogue between the duellers, a bit of explaining for the cards and overall, was a great introduction to how duels work.

As for the plot of him challenging the rest and the ever looming Nikki and Isaac encounters, I look forward to how all that'll go and whether he'll mend that discarded friendship or just chuck it into oblivion when they reconnect.

So yeah, that's it for Chp 1, let's go onto Chp 2.

Review Chapter 2:

I loved this chapter the most so far. Mostly because it was hilarious. All the back-and-forth between the girls and Mark. I initially expected to hate or dislike them honestly but they were funny and that's a thumbs up in my book. Also poor little Joshua, hopefully he manages to escape the three dreaded succubi though it's highly likely that he wouldn't.

Anyway, duel was fun. The innuendos slipped in were pretty funny. I also really like how fun and engaging the specific mechanics and the switch up in tactics used compared to the last when he used Voltorb instead of Rapidash. Card games always interested but I never really had the time or money to play them so it's always fun to read things about them.

And random Imakuni encounter. It's abrupt! It's random! And it comes completely out of nowhere! But that works for such a weird character like him. I like it for how goofy this random guy is, plus we also get introduced to a new reoccurring character, You Tango... or maybe just a random Doduo idk. If this is the same Doduo as Book 2 then it's cool that I get to see him this early. Excited to see how things will fare with him this early in the story.

Chp 3 Review:

The interactions between Tango and Mark is fun, especially since he misread the little birdy's name. I can almost guarantee that I'll see some real funny stuff every time Mark calls him by the wrong name. Also since I'm one of the few that read Book 2, I do wanna say that I really like Gotan (calling him that for now 'cause it'll be really confusing for me due to you also sharing that name). The big contrast from how he used to be is probably the best change in character traits. Despite him only just appearing recently, Gotan's really endearing and likeable, and I do like the way you've eased us into the masochistic side of the dumb birds and introducing it in a comedic way unlike how it was mostly used as a detriment to Mark in the OG story. So yeah, liking Gotan a lot atm.

Nikki's brother and Da Lore! It's a good way to show off how wonky and weird the world is with ancient tech being more advanced than the modern world. I don't think I can comment on it too much though since I'm pretty aware of the sequel and a decent chunk of its lore, but I think it's written pretty well and the exposition was pretty engaging and the by-play between Nikki's bro and Mark were fun.

So uh yeah, think that's about it for the chapter so let me just go straight to Chp 4!

Review of Chp 4:

It's a pretty funny chapter. We get some backstory on Mark's original motives and some context between his and Nikki's lost love.

I enjoyed the funny drunk moments between Mark and Nikki's brother, it's a nice scene of the two bonding and just in general chilling out. Although the prose of this chapter is a tad weaker than the previous, some sentences and tags were repetitive. Oddly enough, I think it's only a problem during the drunk scenes since the scenes right after were pretty alright.

Maybe try adding more description of things and add the drunken slurring in the narrative to put in more spice? 'cause at the moment, it feels pretty barren.

That aside, I do wonder why Nikki's brother wants Doduo's feathers. Is it because Pokémon magic and it's like a source of power or something? It can't just be for nothing. Why would you make a device that only sucks that specific item otherwise?

Anyway, another fun chapter though not a lot could be said aside from the fun character interactions so let's see if things will pick up in Chp 5.

Review of Chp 5:

And Mark comes in swinging with a steel chair and boom! The science club goes down!

Jokes aside, I really do enjoy the occasional in-depth battles that happen. It's nice seeing just how different in skill level Mark is compared to the random NPCs. And not to mention just how much better written they are compared to before, they're super engaging and fun to read through like I'm actually watching two dudes just duelling each other with a bunch of cards.

Anywho, after beating the scientists, he heads out with Rick (finally remembered his name this time) in town. I like the two's chemistry, Rick's been a blast to read through and having him be some sort of conflict with Gotan is nice. I wonder whether Gotan will start being a bit more prickly now that he'll have to spend more time with Rick.

And that's it for Chp 5. Man, I'm just chugging through all of these (ignore the fact that it took me an entire week to actually get this part because of my procrastination), but anyway, let's head on to Chp 6!

Review of Chp 6:

Alright so review time! Mark challenges the Fire Club, apparently he's an OG member. And unsurprisingly, he loses his first battle against a member of a club that spawned his super talented skills. So as an aside, I do like that Mark actually loses here, even if it's because his luck went kapoot, it's nice to see him not just casually blitz everyone before him and it makes him feel less like a juiced up power fantasy MC and and more like a grounded character that's just really good at the game. And also, it teaches us the one true enemy of TCG, RNGesus.

Anywho, aside from that, I do enjoy the different flair of character personalities we've been getting throughout the chapters and it's nice to see some scenes dedicated to them individually. It's a huge upgrade compared to how it started when most characters were usually just one to five paragraphs or so of just really surface-level traits. It makes the world feel a lot more alive with all the different unique personalities running around.

Like I really do enjoy John's arrogance annoying the crap out of Mark. And while I do have one tiny complaint about the chapter, it isn't big enough to warrant changing I think as it's just my personal opinion. Basically John and Jonathan are very similar in names and I did get a little confused when I was first introduced to them. Again, I don't think it matters too much since I don't think we'll be seeing them anytime soon in the future but it's something to keep in mind when making characters as to not make their names too close to one another (unless y'know, they're twins or that's the point of the joke).

So yeah, that's it from me. I'll get right onto Chp 7 now.

Review of Chp 7:

I find it so funnily weird how paying money can influence a coin flip. Like, I know it's explained already but it's such a goofy concept. Like imagine paying a couple bucks just to manipulate luck? All the billionaires would be swimming in even more dough if they could.

So anywho, surprise guest from a psychic! It's interesting to see another one aside from that old lady in Book 2. I wonder whether there's a difference in their psychic powers since Stephanie seems to be using it a lot more casually when compared to that old lady. Also kinda funny that a future seer is using her powers to work customer service instead of like the lottery or trying to gamble. Though I guess Stephanie was stated to be a kid so she's probably not old enough to even try that.

Going back to the main topic of the chapter, Jonathan. I know I've said it before in the previous chapter but it really is nice to see Mark losing and trying his best to boost his odds... even if it's a morally dubious way to gain an advantage. It makes his championhood feel a lot more earned and more believable as he's not stomping his way through while holding back. It also makes the inevitable wins so much more gratifying when it happens, y'know.

And I think that's about it for this chapter so imma go on to Chp 8 now!

Review of Chp 8:

So a decent bunch happens this chapter with Mark beating up a little boy and reading the news. It's nice seeing the little set-ups and foreshadowing hidden in the news section, really helps the payoff when things start ramping up later on.

I really enjoy the banter between Mark and Stephanie. It's always fun seeing a future seer going through something they didn't expect. It's a bit odd that I find the female characters in this fic a lot more entertaining than the male ones. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing or anything since Rick is a fun character as well though I guess it's also because a lot more girl were introduced than guys lately so that might be colouring my thoughts a bit.

But anywho, another fun chapter with fun characters and interesting worldbuilding!

Onward to Chp 9!

Review of Chp 9:

Okay, so let me just jump straight into the big thing about this chapter. Stephanie!

The heart-to-heart with her and Mark was cute, definitely felt a little sad at hearing her backstory and it was a scene that was good and didn't drag things down. Though I can't help but wonder whether it would've hit a lot harder if we knew what exactly Stephanie wanted to use her money for. I know she already said it's to numb the pain but I feel like it could hit a lot harder if we get subtle hints of what exactly she's doing with the money, y'know?

Like maybe she wants to buy something that reminds her of her parents? Something that she'd always bugged them about when they were still around? Maybe she wants to use it to help her club? Or any number of things really. I think giving us something could make it feel a lot more personal.

So aside from that, I do like the short bits of bonding between Gotan and Rick, it's cute seeing them (or well Gotan) not hating or disliking one another. And the rest of the psychic members immediately forfeiting is a nice casual display of their powers. A bit disappointing that the psychic club scene was so short but it makes sense given the context of their powers.

Chp 10 Review:

So here we learned that apparently Isaac was the reason why nobody wanted to fight Mark with his op deck which sets up a nice little build-up to the inevitable confrontation that'll occur in the future. I wonder why exactly Isaac decided to do that. I assume it's likely jealousy because of Mark's skills so I'm all the more excited to see how that confrontation will go down. I'm expecting a lot of screaming and yelling.

Anywho, another duel and this time with the former champion. It's always cool to see other people react to just how vast the gap between the skill levels of a player and an NPC is. It's also pretty nice to see Mark starting to work on another deck, makes MothZapper feel a lot more 'worked on' rather than coming out of nowhere (yes, I remember he did so because he lost. I'm moreso talking about how it's because it took him so long to make a new deck) in Book 2.

I don't think I have more to talk about so I'll end things here for now.

Let's get to my line-by-line comments, shall we?

Prologue
I’m now officially the TCG Island Champion! Wins against countless opponents in the Pokemon Trading Card Game allowed me to challenge and defeat the now-former Champion, Ronald. Strangely, Ronald stood no chance in either of our games... I graduated with highest honors from Pokemon Card Elite University for a chance at the title. I hadn't anticipated winning by a landslide. It seemed I prepared far more than needed, but how could that be true? It was the most important title a person on our island could hold!
Always find it funny when the characters in story take note of the game's terrible ai. Also think this is missing a 'the' here
I owed so much to him for how he raised me practically my whole life even though my parents passed away before I could even form any memories of them.
RIP gramps. You gave us a cool guy that can beat everyone with common cards
But regarding my grandfather, I inherited this diary from him as a family heirloom that is meant to be used. This is my first time writing in it. I will carry on the writing tradition until it is time for me to pass it to a future child or loved one. I shall keep it with me at all times. I even plan to include some pictures!
Knowing what I do about the diary. It's kinda funny how the foreshadowing here is essentially implying that this book is super old and yet somehow it's not broken or ruined. Great subtle way to hint at the 'magicks' of the book
Now, some may question why a Champion such as myself would stoop to tutoring. In truth, after defeating Ronald, the game lost some of it's appeal. If no one could beat me, where was the excitement? It served to highlight the personal sacrifices made to get there all the more...
I don't really get why having the champion tutoring someone be something that's weird or looked down upon? Like isn't it a good thing that the expert is passing down his knowledge and brightening the next generation or something? Though I guess if no pro teaches the younger generation about the TCG, it does make sense on why so many people are complete trash at the game despite it being the main way to solve conflict.

Also wrong 'its'
The mansion reminded me vaguely of the house I grew up in with my grandfather. He sold it to afford my tuition at the private university...
Christ, just how expensive is this world's college? Like I understand the economy's shit but selling a literal mansion to afford university seems real silly, like damn I think this really sets the idea for why so many of the population is trash at the TCG if college is so expensive a rich person has to sell his fucking mansion to afford it!
Part of my lessons from her included duels. It took me a long time, but once I started winning games against her, everything clicked. But despite the wins, I always felt she still held back against me somehow...
Huh, I wonder if she's gonna return in the tournament arc since I feel like that's a great place to show off her true prowess
Tutor kids, they said. It would be FUN, they said... It was at this point I decided on no more tutoring sessions... even if it was for wealthy patrons...
Lol TBF Mark, you're literally dealing with a spoiled rich brat so maybe tone down those expectations, my dude.
Ok, Billy." I clapped my hands together. "Before I go over Pokemon cards, lets have a quick geography lesson!"
Missing an apostrophe
Now I'll have you know that geography is important!" I waggled my finger. "Its hard to understand the context of our world without it!"
Yeah, Billy! How else are you gonna be a geoguesser pro if you don't know your geography?

Also missing an apostrophe here
I brought a hand to my face. This kid was really something else... He had a point though. Most girls could probably win a fistfight with me...
Aw, don't be so down on yourself, Mark. You have a decently stocky build, just do some pushups and you'll probably win against a preteen girl
Billy's eyes widened. "WOAH I thought you were forty-five!"

Oh my poor ego... forty-five?? It must have been the way I dressed and my facial hair...

Forty-five...
*Cough* Let's ignore that I thought the exact same when I first read book 2. (Except I was worse 'cause I thought he was 60ish)*Cough*
I must have looked visibly ill. Such was his super effective existential attack...
You could say the kid's typing must've been Asian with the EMOTION DAMAGE he dealt (This is a Steven He joke, if it isn't obvious enough)
crossed my arms. "Billy, that sounds like a very cheap and unsporting way to play the game! Things like that might cause new rules to be implemented. Do you WANT a mulligan rule that penalizes for needing to draw a new hand whenever you don't happen to draw at least one basic Pokemon?" I tilted my head and widened my eyes for good measure.
Y'know, considering that the TCG is used to solve conflict. Doesn't this mean that Billy technically invented a war crime lol
Charizard is a Fire type. Since there is no poison type, Muk is a Grass type."
Okay so I know this section is mostly an exposition rather than anything pertaining to the actual story. I do think it's kinda odd that Mark would talk about poison type if they don't exist. If you ever decide to mix this section in with the story or make this more story like, I think it'd be better if you have Billy question why something that's literally living sludge is grass type and having Mark just saying he doesn't know or saying that it's a commentary of modern society something along the lines.

Again, it's something completely optional since this is just an exposition section but I think you could add some humour if you have them question why something that looks toxic is grass type
At least my home is permanently mine now... I heard the other islands have a horrible thing called real estate tax! Having no money to pay it would let the government steal ones entire house away! All from failing to pay a tax a mere fraction of the total value! Clearly, the other islands were barbaric places with only the worst sorts of government mankind could possibly produce...
*Looks around at the state of the world* Is it bad that this joke has only aged like wine?
Had I known my money predicament was comming I would not have purchased that personal transportation drone, my new car, and the monstrosity underneath the concrete of my garage... If people just agreed to keep dueling me as much as I want whenever I want none of this would have been a problem!
Okay, what's the monstrosity? I'm kinda curious. Is it a really big Doduo plushie or... No wait, is it a Scyther shrine? I remember him loving Scyther. Also misspelled 'coming'

Chp 1
The room was mostly formless and my thoughts were a fluffy haze, but that was just how things were. There wasn't anything odd about that. Nothing at all.
Lol yeah, it's a dream. Thought I'd accidentally skipped a chapter or something with how out of nowhere Nikki was
My childhood best friend, Isaac never quite understood or showed much interest in women. But that also meant he had no problem with Nikki and I dating during our teenage years. He was always such a good sport in both love and cards.
Why do I feel like that's he's gonna be the complete opposite out of this dream?
As I made my way along the trail, the small occasional wooden plank bridges over various creeks added to the character of it. The sound of the gently flowing water joined with the sounds of occasional birds singing from the treetops. Speaking of birds, sometimes one even saw wild Doduo cutting through! There had been one recently, judging from the tracks across the path.
I think it'd work better if instead of 'even saw', changing to 'could even see' would flow a bit better
She was wearing her usual green collared shirt and green hat with a pokeball symbol on it.
Y'know, I always find it funny that in Pokémon worlds where pokéballs don't exist, there's always just a pokéball symbol for like no reason. Like why would something like that exist in PMD or in this fic where cards are the main way to fight? Not a criticism mind you, it's just something I wanna just rant about lol
I wanted to ask Nikki out back in those days, but how could I? Talented as I was, I had only attained the lowly rank of Fire Club member. Besides, she even said she would marry me if I became Champion! Granted, she made that promise when we were still children... But I believed in her!
Well, people change, Mark. You can't really expect things to stay the same no matter what you want
She proceeded to her turn and drew a card, attaching her energy for the turn on her benched Bellsprout Lv. 11. An odd choice considering her Scyther Lv. 23 in the active slot was left with none.
Huh, the TCG has levels? Do they actually do anything or are they just pure cosmetic? I'm assuming higher levels=better stats based on Mark's thoughts.
Brittany clenched her teeth. "No! I just want an energy! Stop that!"

Gentle1.png

I shook my head. "Not going to happen."
This just in newly-appointed champion bullies a little girl to tears. More news at 8.
Also there's something hilarious about seeing him smirking like that right after the picture of Brittany crying
Heather closed her watering eyes and brought her hand in front of her face. "Oh... ok... I had hoped I might win, but your fire types were too tough. Did I at least help you test your deck?" She looke up at me with sad eyes.
Misspelled 'looked'
Chp 2
Surrounding it on all sides was one of the only lakes in our world!
Probably not important, but one of the only lakes? Huh? I know the world is tiny and all but seriously? What? Do rivers exist? Are the lakes super special or is it just random worldbuilding because the world is smol?
Had I been wearing a hat, (not that I would be caught dead in one) it might have blown away!
Lol, yeah. The only player character aside from Wes that doesn't have a hat.
They all flirted quite well too... But underneath their smiles and charms, I knew there was only one thing they wanted: prestige. If I ever lost the title of 'Champion', surely they would drop me like a bad card from their decks...
Yeah, a bunch of gold diggers who only care about money and fame. Don't know why people would even go for them honestly.
Was it bad I often found myself confused which girl was who? I suppose it wasn't totally bad considering two of the club members were twin sisters...
Lol, they're so generic, even he knows about it
"Ah! Sara! Please don't be upset! You know I have a hard time telling you and Amanda apart!"

She sobbed. "I suppose you WANT me to be Amanda, don't you?!"
Hah! Really hit 'em with the nuclear roast by complete accident eh, Mark?
Am-SARA was pouting. "Aaaaamaaaandaaa! That's not fair! I was here first! I get dibs!"
Hah, omg Mark! They don't even have the same hair colour!
When the others weren't looking I could see Joshua's eye twitching. I gave him a small nod to acknowledge his predicament.
He's a whipped twink. Amazing.

... They're totally gonna turn him into a femboy the next time we see him
The actual Amanda this time. It certainly didn't help matters that the two often swapped hair dye with each other!)
Ah, so that's why he gets confused. It's not that he becomes a dummy when dealing with pretty girls
One does not feel bad for beating away a hungry crocodile with a shovel...
Lol, I just love all of these lines Mark has, they're hilarious. If only the rest can hear his thoughts and understand what he really thinks of them
As I approached the door to my house, Doduo simply stood outside. It wasn't going to attempt to follow me into my house? Having had enough for one day, I didn't think too hard about it and left it outside. I was sure it would just go find someone else to follow. Though, I did ponder what possibly could have caused it to leave Imakuni to follow me in particular...
Wait what, he just completely ignored the girls and left the water club? Aw, I kinda wanna see what the girls' reactions were to that random Imakuni encounter. Also yay! Tango (who's totally not secretly an ex-evil guy) is here! Also whatever happened to the Amy duel? I assumed things went the same but it's kinda odd that she got left out

Chp 3
At first I had mistaken it for a large pile of leaves! How could one bird shed so many feathers so quickly?!
Obviously Pokémon magic! It was using Feather Dance the entire night!
Apparently my Scyther-themed mailbox was not on the approved list of mon for the neighborhood!
Really? It's not bothering anyone! Why on earth would you care for something as stupid as that? (Also yes, I know this is a joke about IRL, I'm still annoyed at that even being a thing)
Out of the corner of my eye, Doduo appeared to have... grinned for a moment? Perhaps it was my imagination.
Careful Cypress, your human's slipping.
Gotan's heads tilted as its eyes seemed to squint for a moment with a flash of... bewilderment? -or at least I thought he might have, perhaps it was my imagination?
Lol, I can already see the running gag of Tango trying really hard to correct his name and the climax where he finally reveals himself and screams that his name is Tango
I chuckled a bit as I shook my head. What was wrong with those birds?
A bunch of little freaks in disguise that's what.

Chp 4
After poking around in the lawn for over an hour, Rick finally swung the door open, tossed a couple feathers he was holding into the air and sucked them up with his Feathermaster 5,000.
A feather–what now? He made a vacuum just for feathers?
Rick was quiet for a moment. "Dude... that is SO messed up. Its like a sad drama or some crap... You want her, so you get better at cards. She wants YOU and chases you, but can't get there!"
Wrong "it's"
Rick stumbled over from the recliner and plopped down next to me on the couch while putting his arm on my shoulder.
Heh, too bad that won't ever happen with how he'll only fall in love after getting kidnapped
After coffee, breakfast, letting Rick shower and then showering myself, I was back on my familiar couch with Rick on the recliner.

Gentle2.png

I looked at Rick. "I don't think I feel like going out today."

Rick locked eyes with me. I could tell he was beat. "Yeah, me neither. Want to just crash here for the day?"

We spent the rest of the day watching movies and relaxing. We even ordered delivery pizza.
I think the added line breaks here are kinda redundant tbh. This section could either just be mixed in with the previous scene or removed entirely since it doesn't really add too much considering how small it is.
Back in the Science Club main room, Erik looked up from from some notes he was jotting at one of the large tables.
An extra 'from' here
Champion. I'm only here because of Rick's orders. I am MISSING part of the science symposium for this, but I heard you are supplying Doduo feathers, and that Rick can collect data, so lets get this over with."
Wrong "let's"

Chp 5
Gotan seemed to wince upon hearing Rick call his name.
Heh, Gotan is gonna have the crash out of a lifetime once he has the chance to correct his name lol
After the duel, he turned his hat back around. I could hear him muttering. "Commons... The whole club... How?"
Git gud, skrub
Gotan made a clicking sound as he looked away.

Was it my imagination or did Gotan seem disappointed by this turn of events? I reasoned that would be ridiculous and that I read entirely too much into that dumb bird...
Y'know, with how many times Gotan's let it slip that he's not an ordinary Doduo. I wonder when Mark will start suspecting Gotan of being something more 'cause having this many coincidences happening so close to each other would probably make even the most skeptical person to think that something's off.

Chp 6
Before I could do anything to warn the lad, Gotan dashed forward, dunking both heads straight in, catching them on fire!
Bwah! Gotan wtf! There are better ways to warn people that doesn't involve setting yourself on fire, y'know.
Broke Champion Takes Up Side-Gig of Doduo Feather-Collecting To Pay Bills!
LMAO! Even the tabloids are roasting his lack of financial awareness!
TCG2_Adam.png

Adam was the first to speak up. He looked to be ten. He was wearing the standard Fire Club reddish-orange tracksuit with a yellow zipper. Many days of my youth were in a tracksuit just like that
Bruh, Adam is literally the science club nerd but using a Brock reskin
Not what I needed, but at least I had a temporary plan. I benched Voltorb Lv. 8, played Pokemon Trader and swapped it for a Doduo Lv. 10 from my deck. I benched it and retreated to it. Its 50HP would serve me well. Besides, Gotan was sure to love it judging from the intent gleam in his eyes.
I think this word here is supposed to be 'intense'
Since I knew I would need more Lightning Energy, I played Nightly Garbage Run (Rocket's Secret Machine) Run to send my KOed Voltorb Lv. 8 and its energy back to my deck from the discard pile. I then played Energy Removal on Ninetales Lv. 35 and used Conversion 1 to switch the weakness of Ninetales Lv. 35 from water to lightning.
An extra 'run' slipped by here
But first, I attached my energy to Doduo Lv. 10 and tried my luck again with Gamber: Tails. Of course it was. Coin-flips... The way to make any simple game akin to walking barefoot over HOT COALS! I drew my lone card from it:
Misspelled 'Gambler' here.

Chp 7
Cards that do nothing just for failing a coin-flip... My old unrestricted deck NEVER had to resort to such inconsistent garbage to perform well!
Yeah, totally understand that feeling through the multitude of Gacha games I've played without getting what I wanted!
He immediately played one and attacked, KOing my Ponyta Lv. 8. With no mon in play on my side to replace it with, the duel was lost.
Well, that was fast
No feathers in this game, huh..." Rick frowned. "What an abysmal performance. If you hadn't won so many games already, I never would have guessed you were the Champion..." He shook his head.
Lol, it's not like Mark can control his luck, this ain't an RPG. Cut him some slack
As for the coins flipped, they were always performed with special official Pokemon TCG coins. Those coins had a wireless internet link which served to monitor coin-flips to prevent cheating and link to Bill Inc. for Gambler and Bill's Teleporter. Bill Inc. sent wireless signals to the coins to trigger the micro anti-gravity devices in them to influence the result of the flips.
Oh, that's pretty cool. I was just about to ask how they'd determined the coin flips.
Bill Inc. offered a prepaid service that advertised 100% successful coin-flips on all uses of Bill's Teleporter. Clearly there must have been an issue with that 'service' since it failed the last several times I used it despite my monthly subscription!
Yeah! Time to file a lawsuit for false advertising!
I also learned that dueling after 7:00pm was often met with more success for some reason.
Yeah, that darn tiny child has a bedtime!
I knew wouldn't make it to their senior management and CEO, Bill, before they would evacuate to their rooftop corporate blimp.
Just the mental image of that is hilarious. The thought of some guy fighting through hundreds of people in a card game just to get to the CEO, with said CEO escaping through blimp is so ridiculous. Also missing an 'I' here
Rick had a box of pizza from TCG Pizza, and two large soda drinks from across the street!
Let me guess, you'll have to duel with ketchup packets and pizza boxes to get your food?
The chewing stopped as Rick commented. "How curious! Doduo hate human food, but I have never seen one act like that before." He somehow spoke clearly with his mouth full. "You have a really weird Doduo! Pizza is definitely not on their menu." Rick swallowed his bite of food and took another, chewing in between speaking. "Why would Gotan try for it anyway?" A transparent straw wedged between his lips brought forth the fizzy beverage from its styrofoam prison.
Tango crying 'cause he can never taste pizza ever again😭 (also fun fact, this is when I've reached the character limit in my notes app)
He appeared to be a fowl in quite a foul mood indeed...
I see you resisting that pun! Trust me, Mark it's better to say it out loud and have people groan at you then hide it!
The next duel with Jonathan had him set up one of the most versatile fire Pokemon: Charmeleon Lv. 32. With it's slash attack for 30 damage, he KOed my Dark Rapidash in two hits and took down a Doduo Lv. 10 with one Flamethrower! After being down to my last mon, Voltorb Lv.8, the only way out was to draw more cards. I activated my Gambler card... but the result was TAILS! Jonathan then KOed my Voltorb Lv.8. Because I had no remaining Pokemon on the bench, I lost AGAIN!
Wrong 'its'.
But I had more to consider than that now... the funds it would take to sponsor an academy education... I shuddered to think of the price. Normally, education on our island is given to our citizens freely, but this was a special private academy with tuition paid without financial assistance...
I mean yeah, you literally need a mansion worth of money to get in
"I won't ask anything too high, but I want 25% of all your winnings from selling booster packs. I already know that's the highest you will go to still be willing to deal, so you may as well agree." She leaned back in her chair and put her arms behind her head. Her perpetual smirk showed no signs of abating.

What could I say? She was exactly right.
Oh so Stephanie is a psychic that can see the future? I wonder how her reaction would be if she was ever a variable against Cypress with the diary? Y'know, considering all the time loops that'd happened during the fight, would her vision be all wonky and stuff when it happened?
It wouldn't always work? Sounded like a reasonable compromise... I wasn't trying to give myself an unfair advantage. I just wanted the luck of my deck to be what it should have been. The teleporter failed too often? Gambler would succeed more to balance it... Seemed fair.
Hell yeah, power of P2W!

Chp 8
After attaching energy to Ponyta Lv. 8, evolved it, and brought his Eevee to 20HP after my 30 damage Flame Pillar attack! Just one more attack and my wallet-drain nightmare scenario would be over!
I think making it 'evolving it, and bringing his Eevee...' would flow a bit better
With crossed his arms and a frown, Jonathan lamented. "There goes the tuition... But I don't think I've had my fill and I doubt you are satisfied after losing the first two games to me, right?"
An extra 'his' slipped by
Ok, that's enough." A sigh escaped Jonathan's mouth as he breifly shut his eyes. "No more duels for me tonight. You win, 'champ'." He began gathering his cards. "I'll be training, so don't think you can stay ahead forever..."
Oh I just realised something. Since book 3 is gonna be a tournament, does that mean we'll get to see these club guys again? 'cause that'll be cool if so!
Oh why had I not purchased one sooner!? Now all they had were those dumb Doduo-themed fans!
Because you were cocky enough to think you'd steamroll through the whole club and got humbled?
Glancing between me and presumably the 'end call' button on her phone, Stephanie lingered. "Interesting. I didn't see this part ahead of time..."
Okay, so her future seeing does have limits. Gotcha.
Her eyes widened in apparent excitement. "Oh yeah? And what age do you think I am then?" She leaned closer to the camera resuming her posture from the start of the call."
An extra quotation mark slipped through
Her hair its previous style as she donned her hat once more. Her smirk returned.
Think you're missing a couple words here
UBI Cap Increase
Universal Basic Income. A wonderful fact of modern life. Set in place by our oracle centuries ago, this one social reform virtually eliminated all poverty for TCG Island citizens over the past several generations.

As we have come to expect from our oracle, when inflation gets a little too high, the UBI is increased. Let us be thankful for our benevolent AI ruler, the oracle! Let us also not take for granted the modest houses, food, water, healthcare, and UBI granted to all our citizens as basic human rights.

The latest increase in UBI will continue to safeguard our way of life and help ensure the happiness and well-being of all our citizens for years to come.
Damn, this place really is a paradise, huh?
This increase would also alleviate some my own financial pressure, but sadly it would not be enough to eliminate my needs entirely...
Missing an 'of' here
Immigration Uptick
The latest world population statistics indicate a in influx in immigration from Neo Island to GR Island. The cause of this is speculated to be GR Island's king seeking cheap labor as he is known to be frugal.
Think this is supposed to be 'an' here
Not all immigration is legal, however. Reports indicate GR Island is also engaged in deportation of immigrants that have not gone through the proper channels. Failure to return undocumented immigrants to Neo Island is a hot diplomatic topic lately on the world stage. Neo Island does not tolerate when their citizens leave Neo Island illegally.
This is the whole nameless thing, isn't it?

Chp 9
I was standing on the usual purple square tile flooring. Across the room loomed large purple glass lamps on either side of the doorway leading to the main room of the club. The center of the floor was dominated by a large square plate with the TCG Island psychic symbol of an eye, which was of course, purple. The walls, were painted - you guessed it - purple!
If poison or ghost weren't a thing, I'd be more inclined to think of those over psychic with the colour scheme
Pausing from collecting feathers, Rick surveyed the room. "You know, its been a while since I was last in here, but I swear it gets more purple every time I visit!"
Next thing you'll know, they'll somehow make the sky purple around their base. Also wrong "it's"
I couldn't remember her name... I think it started with a C... it was kind of short too... was it Cloe? Perhaps Candy? Whoever it was, she was probably somewhere in her sixties roughly twenty years ago. Last I heard, she moved to GR Island. Why anyone would want to leave TCG Island to live somewhere else was beyond me...
Oh! That's the old lady, right? I don't really remember her name but it was definitely a 'C', probably Cindy?
As I learned, telekinesis wasn't a real psychic phenomena, but it was a little late to try explaining that to Murray... He was so fanatical about his predecessor that he wore his hair long just to make it look more like hers... I hadn't the heart to tell Murray the truth. But the longer it went, the more awkward it became. I had no clue how long Murray spent per day trying to bend that 'blasted spoon' with his mind, but I cringed every time I thought about it.
I don't remember if I asked this before but huh. Psychics can see the future but not use telekinesis? Can they atleast teleport? Because that's so odd since telekinesis is usually the easy baby steps for any other psychic
Nooo! Not again!" Daniel whined. "How can I fail so many coin-flips that
Could be worse. At least it isn't the mainline games where your Pokémon can stay frozen for potentially an infinite amount of turns if you were unlucky
...Give me something to numb the pain." She scooted next to me, leaning into my side, still curled up.
... Okay, wow. I did not expect this turn of events from smug psychic girl
Apparently, feather plucking gave way to a game... of sorts. Gotan used both heads to swiftly pluck out his feathers one at a time, tossing them into the air while Rick tried to keep up with the Feathermaster. Evidently the goal was to not let any feathers touch the ground, but one managed to land.
Aw, it's nice to see them bond

Chp 10
I closed my eyes. "Ronald... do you know why Isaac did it?"

"Unfortunately not," Ronald shrugged, "but I suspect he has it out for you. Don't be surprised if he tries to goad you into a duel wager. My advice: don't take it. You're using an all-common deck. Honestly, I'm surprised you've kept winning even this long." He shook his head.
Ah, the ol' ex friend is jealous of the MC's success I assume?
He was staring holes in me.

"Oh FINE then!" I rolled my eyes. "Come on inside... you dumb bird..." I opened the door motioning for him to enter.
I feel like adding a bit more to what Gotan is doing would be better since the sentence 'staring holes in someone' doesn't make me think of puppy-dog eyes like what Gotan is currently doing
Ronald was smiling like when I challenged him to the championship match. "Lets see what you got, Mister Gentleman!" He took his deck out and bridge shuffled it perfectly.
Wrong "let's"
Rick had a big smile on his face as his was scribbling away furiously in his notepad. For now, he was focusing only on his writing. I imagined he was probably planning to vacuum all the feathers at the end.
Think this is supposed to be 'he' or 'his hand'
One should not let it's seemingly low level deceive... Level was a good indicator versus other cards of the same mon, other Hitmonchan, in this case. But compared with other mon, looking at level was only an apples to orange comparison.
Wrong 'its'
That's it. THAT'S the potential I saw in you when you first defeated me and became Champion. All this with just a deck of common cards... You have all the skill you need, my friend." He closed his eyes and nodded. "Now get out there and show us why you are the best! I look forward to hearing of your victories." He held up a fist and grinned.
Either remove 'of' or add 'all' here
When I retired for the evening I found my thoughts fixated on the Lightning Club... and Isaac.
Dun dun dun! Backstory time?
And that's it! Took me a while to get this out yet, better late than never, right? So overall, Book 1 is a massive jump in quality compared to how you've started and it's a lot of fun especially with how wacky the world is. It's always nice seeing a writer being so passionate about their work and I can tell just how much you've enjoyed writing this fic.

So yeah, I enjoyed reading this and when I got the time again, I'll try and do another big review like this. Take care in your future writing endeavours!

Hey im here for your 3rd Greninja review!
Also this took me about a 5-6 hours to write so yea and i am not going a for thick review but a funny one with gifs and stuff and also not that much concrit
i'm gonna be reviewing the full prolouge except the parts i reviewed. Lets go!
April 5th
Wanting to record my tutoring, I shall spare no detail here. I tend to jot things down shortly after they occur. With my good memory, this allows me to be highly accurate!
Hmmmm wow nice start on the day :quag:
and the other parts...
i-dont-know-how-to-respond-so-uwu.gif

Now, some may question why a Champion such as myself would stoop to tutoring. In truth, after defeating Ronald, the game lost some of it's appeal. If no one could beat me, where was the excitement? It served to highlight the personal sacrifices made to get there all the more...
Ooooo so that's why he is tutoring makes sense now , bro is basically making a kid who will battle him. 😲
I arrived at the Mansion where I introduced myself to Billy's parents. It seemed my appearance was suitable as they made no mention of it. Good thing I always looked my best!
Hmmmm being raised by a gentlemen of course makes you chivalrous aren't i right
gary-spongebob.gif

The mansion reminded me vaguely of the house I grew up in with my grandfather. He sold it to afford my tuition at the private university...
maybe they bought that house
maybe-maybe-not-dr-samira-mohan.gif

Speaking of that university, the instructor there, Dr. Wem, had the most amazing insight into the game I ever saw
Hmmm feels like a mentor eh?
During my time there, she regarded me as her very best student
Hmmm of course a student who becomes a champ was a best student. :wowzard:
someone able to win TCG games against her
Hmm of course bro was her best student and the only one to able to beat her
Part of my lessons from her included duels. It took me a long time, but once I started winning games against her, everything clicked. But despite the wins, I always felt she still held back against me somehow...
It took me a long time to the damn rock paper scissors version of Pokemon trading card game makes sense. But the holding back feels like my dad when i play cricket with him vs when he plays with my big bro. :unquag:
I once asked Wem why she didn't become Champion. Her answer: She didn't like the attention and found it tedious!
Classic a strong side character having some plot point which doesn't make he/she the best. :unquag: .
The only person I've ever heard of with no interest in becoming Champion
Wow , that just adds more salt to the wound , classic plot points (this is not meant to be critism just tryna be funny :quag: )
She was also insulted the position didn't pay any salary. A good point. Winning booster packs from duels did not require a Champion title...
foreshadowing that the mc becomes broke?
maybe-maybe-in-white-bubble-letters-with-pink-background.gif

Shortly after my graduation, I heard Wem moved to Neo Island.
Hmmmmm neo island? that's new! :wowzard:
I wasn't sure how she managed it with how strict they were on travel, but I supposed she had connections.
Ooooo they only allow certain people huh?
A pity. It would have been nice to continue playing the TCG with her
Wow bro really wants a challenge these days.
I supposed it would have been nice to have her around in general
the-office-michael-scott.gif

Things were rather solitary. Her company and cooking would have been welcome. Perhaps I'd see her again someday?
Hmmmmm , hmmmm , hmmmmmmmmmmm HMMMMMMMMM! (bro is using his full brain power on what to say)
But enough ancient history.
Okay pretty straight forward line

and anything else about it:
i-think-you-should-leave-i-don%27t-know-what-to-tell-you.gif

After my introduction to Billy, I relocated with him to the study for our session.
What's a study?
Taking a seat in the comfortable arm chair, I motioned Billy to the couch near the coffee table. "Billy, do you know why I am here today?"
Hmmm classic question.
"Sure Mister!" Billy did a running jump into the sofa cushions before hopping up to sit. "You're here to teach me Pokemon Cards!"
Lil bro thinks he is 100 years old
The inches he pushed the couch corner along the floor... It almost caused me to miss what he said. "Do you know what it looks like to play the Pokemon Trading Card game?"
Lil bro rocked champ shocked.
mind-blown-mind-blowing.gif

"OH!" I winced at the boys sheer volume. Clearly, the concept of 'inside voices' was lost on the lad... "I know!" Billy bounced in place as he spoke. "You wear duel disks on your arms and call out these monsters that are holograms and play shadow duels!"
Bro the word lad just made my mind say "let's switch to a brit voice , bo'o'wa'er" bro and is that a Yu-Gi-Oh reference wait let me google it up... holy casserole it is!
"Sorry," A shake of my head confirmed his guess was incorrect, "you must be thinking of some card game you saw on TV."
hehe it's Yu-Gi-Oh
Billy's jaw dropped. "Well there's still holograms in it right?!"

"There are no hologr-"

Leaping from his seat, Billy pushed the couch corner yet another inch out of alignment as he stamped his feet. "I WANT HOLOGRAMS! THAT'S HOW YOU PLAY CARDS!"
I like how billy had no patience and didn't let our MC (someone tell me his name) speak a SENTENCE! and immediately lil bro throws a mini-mini-mini-mini-mini mini-mini-mini-mini-mini mini-mini-mini-mini-mini mini-mini-mini-mini-mini mini-mini-mini-mini-mini mini-mini-mini-mini-mini mini-mini-mini-mini-mini mini-mini-mini-mini-mini mini-mini-mini-mini-mini mini-mini-mini-mini-mini
spongebob.gif

mini-mini-mini mini-mini-mini-mini-mini mini-mini-mini-mini-mini mini-mini-mini-mini-mini tantrum
Tutor kids, they said. It would be FUN, they said... It was at this point I decided on no more tutoring sessions... even if it was for wealthy patrons... Kids! All they seemed to care about were holograms! Still, I was there to do a job, and I wasn't about to give up...
[Insert laughing here] noice meme reference.
Billy and I had a long chat about expectations but he eventually calmed down and understood the game was played without holograms... I also adjusted the couch back to its proper spot before we sat back down. Fortunately, Billy did not ruin the alignment of the couch again.
i think took about
later-spongebob.gif

HUUUUUH? how the counter is glitching it can't decide!
"Ok, Billy." I clapped my hands together. "Before I go over Pokemon cards, lets have a quick geography lesson!"

Throwing his head back in frustration, he groaned. "Aww do we have to?"

First holograms, and now he wanted to skip geography?
The dialog is pretty bland on it's own so like yeah i have to include lines together , First of all kids hate geography so like yea ig 👍
but-i-dont-know-the-reason-is-yeah-but-i-dont-know-butterfly.gif

"Now I'll have you know that geography is important!" I waggled my finger. "Its hard to understand the context of our world without it!"

Puffing his cheeks out, Billy released the air in a sigh. "Okaaaaay..."

I hadn't realized how thankless it would be. Then again, if Billy were simple to teach, I doubted his parents would have sought a tutor...
Naughty kids always need a tutor only smart naughty kids don't, which i am. In India we call it a smartbencher we have topper who always tops. then we have a backbenchers who are the class clowns combine those two and get a smart bencher.
With my eyes closed, I held up my finger. "Our world has three islands: TCG Island, where we are now;" I raised another digit, "GR Island to the east;" A third finger stood to join the others, "and Neo Island, between the others, but far north." Lowering my hand, I opened my eyes. "The rest of our world is ocean."

"Doesn't our world seem kinda small to you?" He crossed his arms.

In inquiry, my eyebrow raised. "Compared to what?"

"Like the TV show I watched," Billy held his arms out, "with Holograms!"

Oh, dear Mew... not THAT again!
i like like he says dear Mew and not dear Arkoos just like are cards even alive that he says dear Mew like idk honestly.
The twitching of my face clashed with the smile I produced. "Ah, Billy, worlds that big are a fantasy! Giant islands called continents are a fun concept for a story, but I'm afraid our world has no where near that much land."

"Awww... I wanted continents..." Billy frowned.

Making an o-shape with his mouth, it appeared he remembered something. "Hey, Mister! How'd you get good enough at Pokemon Cards to teach em?"

Ah, finally a positive direction for our lesson!

"Well, Billy. I started out like you!" I grinned. "I had a lot to learn, but once I did, I battled duelists at my local card club. Eventually, I became skilled enough to become a club member!"

Excitement set in as his eyes widened. "Woah! That's so COOL!" Billy bounced up on the edge of his seat. "What club were you a member of?"

Holding a hand to my chin, I smiled. "The Fire Club, of course!"

"The Fire Club? Why would you join that one? I wanna join the Fighting Club!" He hopped up and threw a punch in a direction away from me.

"That's the beauty about becoming a club member." Smiling, I cast my gaze out the window as Doduo-themed kite sailed by in the distance. Some kid was running down the street with it. Picking a bird that runs and jumps for a kite? A complete design failure! Why, they could pick almost any other bird and do a better job of conveying flight!
The gif shall show my reaction

umm-sungwon-cho.gif

The finger Billy jabbed in my arm roused me from my inner monologue. "What beauty, Mister?"
I seriously wanna know the MC's name dear Arkoos what is it?
Thankfully, I hadn't completely lost my prior train of thought. "You get to choose the club. If you want to join the Fighting Club, you can!" I turned my gaze back to Billy with my arms out.
That is a nice thing like your school clubs like theatre club y'know?
"That's right!" He crossed his arms, closed his eyes, and nodded. "I'm going to be the best fighting type user ever!" Billy opened his eyes and held a hand to his chin. "OH! But what happened after you became a crummy Fire Club member, Mister?"
lil bro has nice dream but the disrespect is crazy as my nan's toe
Crummy?! You would think he would have at least a little respect for the club the Champion came from!
well you wouldn't cuz uh lil broski is already putting disrespect for breakfast , lunch AND dinner.
Crossing my arms, I tapped a finger on one. "After I was done being a crummy Fire Club member..." The nerve of the boy... "I improved by dueling various opponents. Eventually, I attended the Pokemon Card Elite University. Most of my duels were against the other university students at the time."
bro literally said crummy to make the kid happy such a nice a tutor :quag:
Jumping through the air, Billy threw punches in the air as he landed back on the sofa. "More school is for wimps who can't FIGHT! I won't need it because I'm going to fight real good!"
Charges for assault and battery detected.
I brought a hand to my face. This kid was really something else... He had a point though. Most girls could probably win a fistfight with me...
face palm detected aura rejected.
burn-oh.gif

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
Placing my hands on my hips, I retorted. "Different people are good at different things. Fighting isn't better than thinking. It's just different!"

He shrugged. "If you say so. Did you at least graduate?" He leaned forward as he tilted his head.

At least?! Why was I feeling judged by a child?!
Even more disrespect lil bro is the king of disrespect here. 👹
Resisting the urge to roll my eyes, I settled for gritting my teeth. "Yes, I did... After that, I traveled far and wide over our island dueling all opponents in the various clubs. After beating the club members, I earned the right to duel the club masters and defeated them too!"

"Weren't you like a grandpa by then?" Billy furrowed his brow.

Children could be the most fearsome of foes! I attempted to reassure myself by remembering how old twenty-eight felt to me when I was nine. Even so, grandpa was a bit much...
Lil bro just keeps on roasting him.
Honestly the whole day of tutoring is just getting roasted and toasted but we aint gon skip that even if it takes me years :quag:
Waving my hand dismissively, I desperately tried to defend myself. "Oh, I wasn't THAT old! There are many people who don't even become parents by my age of twenty-eight!" I was smiling but wanting to cry. Already twenty-eight and no family of my own to show for it despite the fact I became the Champion...
Classic champ has no family like diantha , lance , steven , cynthia. so the MC is quite trending.
His eyes widened. "WOAH I thought you were forty-five!"
MC is chopped. :mewlulz:
Oh my poor ego... forty-five?? It must have been the way I dressed and my facial hair...

Forty-five...
yea unc. :unquag:
"Hey, Mister. What's wrong? Do you have a tummy ache?" Billy looked up at me curiously.

I must have looked visibly ill. Such was his super effective existential attack...

Forcing a smile took immense effort. "Oh, no. I'm FINE. Thank you for your concern." I felt my hands ball into tight fists.
bro peak roasting on a kebab where is ma CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA? :mewlulz:
"Ok! What about the rest of the story then?" He smiled, completely oblivious to the Hyperbeam to my ego...

Closing my eyes with a deep breath, I lingered a few moments before speaking. "After I defeated the Club Masters, I gained the right to duel the Champion in a two out of three match. I won, becoming our new Champion."

There. Perhaps that would impress the boy!
but that line would not master bruce. :unquag:
Holding a hand to my chin, I grinned. "Well, that's by being the very best and having the same deck I become Champion with!"
The line "Holding a hand to my chin" proves that our MC is a unc. :mewlulz:
"Keeping the same deck?" Billy tilted his head. "But what if new cards come out? Wouldn't you need to update it to stay ahead of everyone?"

After laughing a moment, I replied. "New cards? Don't be absurd, Billy!" I waved my hand dismissively. "We have all the cards to ever exist! The Pokemon TCG is complete and lacking nothing."

"Well, that can't be right!" He crossed his arms. "When was the last time new cards came out?"

Shaking my head, I offered a slight smile. "We've had these cards for all recorded history. I don't know why you are so fixated on the idea of new cards."
Hmmmm pretty weird feeling but new TCG cards out of no where is also weird so like yea that's like make strats with the same old cards like at some point y'know they would be bored and make new cards but nope! :wowzard:

Billy opened his mouth as if he had more to say, but rolled his eyes. "Well, in that case, when you became Champion did you have to beat the Grand Masters too?"

"I would if they were real," I chuckled a bit, "but you must be referring to one of our old legends. Who knows, maybe we will create a team of Grand Masters one day."
Oh wow that's actually a pretty nice idea like you haven't beat the game yet! go beat up some grand masters, is like holy S### there's still more bosses?!!? :letsgorb:
He frowned. "Well, that sounds too easy to become Champion then!"
if Lil bro went against cynthia , lil vro is cooked he ain't survin allat pain bro that garchomp a beast frfr:screm:
After grandpa, I'd take anything!

But now the boy belittled even my Champion title... Did his impertinence know no bounds?! Still, he was not without a point...

"You might be right about that..." Looking up and to the right, I considered his point. "It has been easy to win games against the duelists here..."

"It must mean you really ARE a Champion, since you beat everyone easily!" His eyes were full of wonder.
So this is so like funny cause bro said nah bro nah why gramps? just anything but gramps man and bro said it will be easy and bro admires him atleast hahaha :quag:
One would think that, but I had my doubts... It was almost as if other duelists were just there for kids to craft decks against and beat. They all had at least a basic knowledge of the game, but compared to Doctor Wem and myself, their tactics were woefully predicable and limited... They also didn't seem to grasp the concept of optimizing their decks. Such a perplexing phenomenon...
I genuinely have no words here but , like this just kinda shows that the champ is GOATED like the tactics by him and his professor are like the only like creative ones like him saying grasping the optimization of a deck.
A poke from Billy brought me out of my thoughts. "Hey, Mister! I'm ready to learn Pokemon Cards now! Make me the very best!" He gave me two thumbs up and a big grin.
Bro is like yea bro i wanna be the very best like no every was dadada [then i mix it with XY's theme song for some reason(faaaaaa)].
Well, at least the child had some ambition...
well yea he wants to be the very best like no every was [just play the whole team song at this point]
fahhh-fah.gif

Snapping out of it, I flashed a smile. "That's the spirit! So, you know how I said the game is played with cards?"

"You mean not-holograms?" With his arms crossed, Billy raised an eyebrow.

Well, at least holograms weren't grandpa...

"Yes, not-holograms! That's the same thing as cards." I rolled my eyes.
Billy saying not holograms is just like FAHHH bro is so fed up with no holograms nintendo give billy hologram cards right this SECOND! and our MC saying at least holograms weren't grandpa was just comedy gold :LOL::LOL::LOL: Our MC be like :I would take mr holograms just not grandpa.
Raising his nose, he closed his eyes. "What about it?"

I leaned forward, raising my brow. "There is one species of Pokemon in our world as more than just cards, but as creatures too!"
oooooooo let me guess mew?
"OOO!" Billy held his head in both his hands. "What is it? What IS it?!"

With a confident grin, I replied. "That, my boy, would be Doduo."
Duduo? makes sense with the name of the fic itself and like Billy boy jones being excited is just showing the hyperactive of kids these days. and Our MC saying "That , ma boi would be Doduo" is like so nonchalant for some reason. 😗
"OH!" He balled a fist. "I know those!" Catching his fist with his other hand, Billy grinned. "The turkey birds that run around!"

Turkey birds? So much for any semblance of decency...

I sighed. "That's right. Turkey birds..."
Hahaha turkey birds this reminds me of a gif i saw a year ago and it is drumroll please in five four three two and one
wobble.gif

Gobble til ya Wobble boi. :quag::quag::quag:
"OH!" After hopping up, Billy jumped back and forth from one leg to the next. "What about SHINEY ones?!"

Why Billy? Why did you torment me with these questions?!

I shook my head. "Sorry, this isn't Neo Island. They might have shiny ones over there, but I'm not sure. I heard they have shiny cards, though."

"Okaaaaay..." Slumping back on the couch, Billy let his jaw hang open. "Well can Doduo at least evolve?"

How did he do it?! That boy zeroed in on everything that forced me to answer how he didn't want!
[insert laugh here] Our MC just can't catch a break [Insert MORE laughing] Billy is just a disrespect king honestly put him in the roasting tournament right now he boutta cook frfr. and billy just wanting to know if there was a shiny or can it evolve is the perfect display of a child's curiosity ,hey that's the name of my science textbook! Pretty neat huh? :quag:
"Doduo can evolve in the TCG, but the Doduo in our world can't seem to evolve into Dodrio."

"Why is that, Mister?"

"Well, no one knows!"

Billy scrunched up his face. "Then what good is Turkey-bird!"
bro Billy boy bob just can't stop his questions and him saying turkey-bird like bro so funny turkeys are literally just birds , lil bro's IQ is cooked.
Tutoring... NEVER again!
MC shocked billy rocked!😗
"Turkey-bird doesn't have to evolve to be useful in the card game." I waggled my finger. "Its fighting resistance is powerful and it has no retreat cost!"

In excitement, he leaned forward. "Ooo! Tell me more!"

"If you have a Doduo companion and use a Doduo card in a duel, your real-life Doduo will take attacks from your opponents cards!"

"But how do card attacks hurt it?" Billy looked confused. "IS IT HOLOGRAMS?!"

Please Billy... for the love of Mew...
the fact that billy just can't stop his obbsession with holograms bro just so funny even if he is there for one like prolog. and Mew replacing arceus here like is comedy gold. 👁️
Shaking my head, I explained. "It's not holograms. The cards don't affect us or the world, but they do affect Doduo! It's like Doduo takes damage from magical Pokemon we can't see or touch!"

"But why does that happen, Mister?" He looked up at me.

Leaning back in my seat, I shrugged. "No one knows..."
Of course no one knows , it's Pokemon! Greninja i choose you! like that's absurd in real life but pokemon yea just your average tuesday seeing a ray quay quay fighting a Deoxys , The only Pokemon minority goes to deoxys! and being y'know racist to Deoxys i call it deoism so ray quay quay your a deoist now [this is just pointless hahaha].
"Wait a minute!" He squinted. "How come there are only turkey-birds but no other Pokemon in our world?"

Bringing a fist to my chin, I replied. "A good question. According to history, Doduo only appeared about two-hundred years ago."

"You know. I think I figured it out!" He nodded to himself. "They must be aliens from outer space!" Raising a fist up, Billy gazed at the ceiling.

I laughed. "Oh, Billy. You've been watching too many shows. Psychics determined aliens don't exist, and that was centuries ago."
Hahaha this dyanamic between Billy and The MC is just peak comedy honestly. 😂😂
From his bottom lip protruding, his disappointment was clear. "Darn! I was so sure... Hey, Mister. Why is everyone into the Pokemon Trading Card Game?"

"Everyone important plays the Pokemon Trading Card Game." Holding up a finger, I asked my next question. "Do you know how you stop a bully from picking on you?"

Billy tilted his head. "I dunno, maybe get a turkey-bird to peck them?"

"Even if that were a solution, Doduo rarely inflict violence on anyone other than themselves or other Doduo." Shaking my head, I chuckled. "Try again."
Protecting yourself from bullies in pokemon 101!
1.Challenge them to a pokemon battle
2.Beat their pokemon with a greninja you found on route 1
3.Take all their money and go gambling!
and if they don't give you money hit with a water shuriken! that'll surely make them your slave forever until you die!:devilish:
Turning away from me, Billy threw a punch as if boxing against an invisible opponent. "Punch em in the nose!"

I was now desperate for this child to get something right. Anything!

"Billy! No! We do not do that!" I was mortified. "You have to settle disputes with the Pokemon Trading Card Game! If a group of foreigners invaded our land, held our people hostage and stole most of our cards, the only way to stop them would be by winning duels against them in the TCG!"

Holding his head in both his hands, Billy growled. "But that doesn't make any sense!"

That was it. That was the last straw. Clearly there were some things I just couldn't teach...

"Maybe once you turn 7 you will be old enough to understand." I shrugged. "Just trust me. The way you stop bad guys or make anything important happen is with duels."
This is peak 6 year old brain you just unlocked thinking a year ago you don't know shit so like yea bro is pretty smart haha! :quag:
I am adding this line here to denote that this section pertains to mechanics of how to play the Pokemon Trading Card Game. If I do not want to read how to play it, I should skip this section and begin reading again after the line below.
And we are going to skip this for the sake of my brain and sanity. :eyes:
After an in-depth lesson on how to play the Pokemon Trading Card Game, Billy was finally spent, so I bid my farewell to him. At least teaching the mechanics of the game went smoothly...

On my way out, I collected my fee from his parents. Thankfully, I was only on the hook for a single session... While it did provide some funds, it wasn't nearly as lucrative as dueling. With how unlikely it was for me to lose games, my best option to earn money remained dueling. That way I could sell booster pack rewards to local card shops!
Best way to make money in any pokemon world is of course , battles except the anime for some reason...
It had been a while since my last entry. The past two weeks were abysmal. Duelists agreed to duel me less and less! Searching for willing duelists left me considerably less time for writing. I didn't think there was a duelist left on our island willing to duel me! They all kept telling me that my deck was 'too strong' and they could 'never win'!
Yea classic everyone is avoiding you now. :unquag:
Unfortunately, I ran up a bit of a credit tab the past month. Normally, it would be fine, but without a constant stream of duels to boost my funds, I found myself short!
Yep now bro is in Pokedebt! YAEY :veelove:
I had little in the ways of liquid assets, so the only thing I could quickly tap into was my vast collection of rare and uncommon cards! Had I known I was going to need more money quickly I would not have paid my mortgage off last month! Such ridiculously atrocious luck! As if fate itself conspired to make me struggle!
Yea bro has a lot of cards and sold those for money what bro got like 0.00001 pokedollars for one?:LOL::LOL::LOL:
At least my home is permanently mine now... I heard the other islands have a horrible thing called real estate tax! Having no money to pay it would let the government steal ones entire house away! All from failing to pay a tax a mere fraction of the total value! Clearly, the other islands were barbaric places with only the worst sorts of government mankind could possibly produce...
Hehehe real estate tax the worst thing in the world , and yet all the irl countries follow this what a shame. 😢

Had I known my money predicament was coming I would not have purchased that personal transportation drone, my new car, and the monstrosity underneath the concrete of my garage... If people just agreed to keep dueling me as much as I want whenever I want none of this would have been a problem!
Hehehe they didn't wanna lose their money!
But a house by itself was not a solution unless I was willing to sell it. Money was needed for working utilities, not to mention food... Unwilling to sell my home, I needed a solution to my crisis!
Well yes you do what else do you need , more balls? :mewlulz:
After pondering things a while, I formed a plan. I wasn't sure it would work. It sounded ludicrous... But I was determined to do it anyway! My wallet demanded it!

From that point on, I would use only common cards in my decks!
YES! i've been waiting for this only common cards difficulty : Super duper hardcore :letsgorb:👹
That meant no uncommon cards, rare cards, or promo cards! Over half the cards in the game, most of which were the strongest cards, would be unavailable! Sure, I could have allowed myself to use uncommons, but I doubted it would be enough... It needed to be absurd... It needed to be completely unprecedented and insane!

No one would refuse to duel me if they knew I was using all-common cards! The embarrassment of being scared to duel an all-common deck should be too much for any duelist...

Besides... IF such a plan worked, how impressive and prestigious would that be? No other Champion in all history had done anything like it... When I thought about it that way, I felt a genuine sense of excitement! After becoming Champion, I wasn't sure I would feel that way again... There was no talking myself out of it... I owed it to myself to try! I needed to see just how far my skill at the Pokemon TCG could really take me!

So, I decided to use the remainder of the day examining cards in an attempt to craft the best all-common card deck I possibly could...
wow bro is very very very weak now and that is also a genius idea no would refuse cause PFFFFF loser really declined a match were his opponent only has common cards what a NOOB. :quag:
May 3rd

I've done it! I have constructed my very first all-common deck! As with all decks, it needed a name. With lightning and fire being prominent, I have dubbed it "FlashFire!" The list is as follows:

FlashFire!

4 Voltorb Lv8
3 Ponyta Lv8
3 Dark Rapidash Lv24
3 Porygon Lv20
2 Doduo Lv10

4 Energy Removal
4 Energy Search
4 Pokemon Trader
4 Bill
4 Bill's Teleporter
3 Gambler
3 Gust of Wind
3 Switch
2 Nightly Garbage Run

7 Fire Energy
7 Lightning Energy
oooooo sounds very basic and if he actually pulls this off bro is more than just OP!
FlashFire! uses Porygon to switch weaknesses of opponents' Pokemon and retreats for free on the following turn with its zero-energy retreat cost. Doing so swaps in a Pokemon that the opponent's Pokemon would then be weak to: either Voltorb or Dark Rapidash. In my experience, opponents did not react to weakness shifts from Porygon, making it perfect for surprise KOs! Such a curious thing, but a thing I intended to take advantage of to the fullest!

Doduo had Fighting resistance allowing it to defeat most opponents of that type. Porygon also had Psychic resistance.

Lightning resistance from opponents would greatly diminish the value of Voltorb, but Porygon could change the weakness of Ground types like Diglett to anything... Even Lightning! Resistance is applied after weakness, allowing Voltorb to defeat mon resistant to it! With that, my deck should avoid being too weak to any one type.

As with any deck, trainer cards that draw more cards were essential. For common cards, the best options for this were 'Gambler' and 'Bill's Teleporter'. Both unfortunately required a coin-flip to be successful.

'Gambler' and 'Bill's Teleporter' were unique, being the only cards tied to Bill Inc. The 'Gambler' card was tied to the local gambling wing of Bill Inc. A coin-flip for that was understandable, even if it was irritating. It was gambling, after all... But a monthly subscription for automatic heads for 'Bill's Teleporter'? That was completely uncalled for! (I signed up for it anyway because I needed my card-draw!) Regarding 'Bill's Teleporter', Bill owned a machine called a 'Teleporter' responsible for the coin-flip results of the 'Bill's Teleporter' card.

Teleportation was obvious science fiction, but surely the name was just a marketing gimmick much like how 'hoverboards' didn't 'hover' at all and just rolled along on dumb wheels! What's worse is that when REAL hoverboards were invented, those had to be called 'anti-grav boards' instead.
zzzzzzz.gif

We do not care.
I intended to take things slow to practice against weaker opponents. For that, I planned to visit the various clubs and duel all their club members. If I could handle them, I would challenge the Club Masters next! I would start with the Grass Club. It was within walking distance of my home, and would be weak to 'Dark Rapidash'.

For the remainder of the day, I cleared my mind and relaxed. The next day would be the start of my new adventure!
Okay bro is actually pretty good on this noice! he is starting his journey
This prolog is AMAZING all the funny stuff like billy just keeps roasting our MC is just so comedy gold and remember in the beginning i said the MC would go broke and here we are , I hope the chapter will be interesting
Hows that for a reveiw now?
