Cynthian took a step back from the towering Truffle and tensed up. Oh great, even other grass types intimidated him now, and did he just call him a hero?

"I wish I could be a hero. A hero wouldn't be such a wimp like me." Cynthian lowered his face and grimaced. "A hero wouldn't be so frightened by everything."

"Part of being a hero is standing up to great frights!" Truffle declared, spreading his wings to blot out the sun. "No hero is fearless, truly, for in their hearts they always know that the reason to fight is something others fear."

"That's very easy for you to say! I've never even fought a single true battle in my life before now. It was always others doing all the fighting, until they got sick of me never carrying my own weight!"

Standing up to great frights? What a load of mud slap. The most Cynthian had stood up against was a caterpie... Which he had to be saved from. He sighed deeply and sat back on the fallen tree. "That stupid cat was right. I'm just spineless and no good at anything. I don't even know why that Diyem guy asked me to come here for this ridiculous mission to fight oversized fishes. If I'd known I'd just meet the same kind of awful mon here, I'd have just remained in my boring stagnant life in the mystifying woods."

"Now, that's no way to face danger!" Truffle fluffed up his feathers and let out a low hoot. "There is no better time to start being a hero than the very moment you shed your apprehensions and face the fright head-on!"

And suddenly, Truffle swept over Cynthian, aiming to pick him up to place him atop his head.

Cynthian gasped when he found his feet no longer touching the ground. What was Truffle's deal?! Can't a mon brood in peace now?

"Why do you even care? You can give me all the encouragement you want, but I can't just change the pathetic mon I am overnight." Cynthian sulked, resting his head on Truffle's. Upon closer look, Truffle's feathers were surprisingly smooth, if a bit ghastly.

"Certainly not!" Truffle agreed to Cynthian. "Yet where you see something pathetic, I see something of limitless potential and growth, just the way the Grass-type is known for!" Truffle crouched down, bringing a wing to hide his face. "Just as we are looked down upon for being one with the plants and foliage that so many creatures trod over, they never expect"--He unfolded his wing in a grand flourish--"the longevity and power hidden within!"

Cynthian smiled, though he tried hiding it. He didn't want to admit it, but Truffle's enthusiasm was rubbing off on him.

"Do you really believe I have potential to grow?" Cynthian asked, though his chest clenched not knowing what answer he might receive. "I couldn't even evolve to a Roserade back home..."

"Well, a Roselia into a Roserade has nothing to do with strength and all to do with luck! There is nothing to be ashamed of there." Truffle bowed, though he kept his head upright. "A glimmering stone of mystic power is required for your kind to ascend further. But within, in your spirit, I see nothing but potential!"

Cynthian bit his lip with a grimace. "A shiny stone only triggers an evolution if the pokemon's will is strong enough to contain the energy from it, on my world at least. I had a shiny stone... it's still sitting in my flower vase in the form of a necklace. Sometimes I wish I'd go to sleep and wake up as a Roserade, but it's just wishful thinking every time.

"I don't really know what this potential is in me, but I hope I can reach it some day. I just don't know where to look..."

"It is always within, but it is not something you can look for. It is something that arises when it needs to." Gently, Truffle reached up and pulled Cynthian down, practically cradling him, though there was oddly some dignity to it--Cynthian could stand on his wings, should he desire. "You have simply not been presented the opportunity for your potential to reveal itself. But perhaps some day soon, it shall."

Truffle beamed and set Cynthian down. "Certainly! I have no doubts. It won't be long before that Magikarp arrives, now, but I wish you luck." Truffle eyed the town's buildings through the trees. "I must do my part to try to protect this place."

"Thank you, again," Cynthian said with a bow. He trotted towards the buildings, then he stopped momentarily to wave and say, "I'll go back to the others now... and see what they have planned against the magikarps. Hopefully nothing crazy!"

Celeste stood at the edge of the woods. He couldn’t fight with nothing but those scraps of jerky in his stomach, and he couldn’t eat the gummis the others were making with berries.

He needed to hunt, but he was nervous to do so without his disaster sense. What if he stumbled across a predator? He could become the prey himself. He wanted backup.

Brisa entered the woods at a lope, eager to find something substantial before the fight. Someone had said she could eat the 'gummis' being made at the Dojo, but she didn't care to rely on novel food before an event like this.

She was hardly into the trees before she saw him.

"Absol."

Brisa spoke softly so as not to alert nearby creatures or startle her ally. She'd seen this one before, but she hadn't spoken to him yet. His body language betrayed nerves.

"Have you come to hunt?" she asked. "I'd rather not try my luck in an unfamiliar territory when I could have a partner at my side."

She smiled, only a little awkwardly. She'd lost a lot of nervous energy sparring with Cynthian, but this was still a social encounter after all.

"Brisa. Likewise."

She fell into an easy walking gait automatically, expecting to find small game soon enough. She'd have hunted alone, but another pair of eyes was always an asset.

Be careful while you are here, said Diyem, his voice suddenly chiming in. Feral Pokemon do live in this area... but there are different levels of feral. Some Pokemon species, even when wild, are intelligent enough that the society here is hesitant to kill them. I will guide you.

Hunting wasn't very easy during a time of crisis. Even the feral Pokemon had evacuated for the most part--the smarter ones, at least. The more stubborn creatures, or the ones who were driven by habit and instinct than rationality, were left behind.

They happened upon a Staraptor, standing tall and proud. It looked at Brisa and Celeste with a predatory glint, but that faded seconds later as it continued to scan the ground. A lifeless Paras was under its left foot.

Staraptor are too strong for you, Diyem said, and some feel they are too intelligent. But the Paras near it is noncontroversial. Though, it's odd for it to be hunting for another... it must have a hatchling. Note its stance and the eyes. Small changes in head shape, too. That is the easiest way to tell a feral from a civilian.

If you're lucky, it will hunt for something else and leave this Paras behind for you to scavenge. Or, you can go elsewhere and hunt for a different Paras. I wouldn't fight this head-on, but it seems to recognize you as a civilian. They have long since learned not to attack unless provoked.

Brisa nodded.

"We have little to gain, and much to lose," she murmured.

She watched the staraptor for a moment, considering the degree of intelligence perceptible in its eyes.

"Diyem — can a creature such as this understand spoken language? Negotiate, perhaps?"
