Chapter 20: Exhale New

Oceanside Lowlife

Bug Catcher
Chapter 20 Exhale

After being summoned to have Sawsbuck work its magic on the Pearl Clan's crops, Ian took a seat on a rather uncomfortable boulder a couple dozen feet away behind the raised beds, his back turned to Team Skull's guesthouse and the rest of Makamae Town in general. The sun was starting to set in the west, and looking east all he saw was darkness. Ian felt a rather biting chill hit him with the breeze and debated releasing Pyroar out of its ball but decided against it. Something about the cold seemed fitting, almost comforting from the latent anger still flowing in his veins. Not long after, Ian's tranquility was broken with the sound of approaching footsteps. He turned, seeing Tupp and Selene coming toward him.

"Hey Ian," Selene said delicately. "How you feeling?"

"Doesn't really matter," he croaked.

"In the first hour since she came back from your altercation thing, Plumeria put a hole in a wall, bawled her eyes out, and cussed out Hyde like three times," Selene said with a giggle. "And she took another one of my tampons, in case you were wondering what might have made her so… mad."

Ian shook his head. "No offense, but do you really think I'm gonna just wipe away all of that bullshit she said because she's PMSing?"

"Well, no…" Selene mumbled.

"She been talking to the old boat captain guy for a while now," Tupp added. "Real serious and shit."

Ingo. Probably formalizing some sort of transfer or something.

"What were you guys even talking about anyways? Plumeria's been really quiet about that. Was it the stuff she was talking to you on the patio about last night?" Selene asked.

At least she's being quiet about it. "In a way," Ian grumbled.

"Any chance you'll fill us in a bit on it?" Selene asked.

"If I did, you'd probably be having the same issues Plumeria's having with me," Ian said hopelessly.

"Oh… What if I promised not to get mad? That I wouldn't tell anyone?" Selene asked.

Ian shook his head, defeated. "She said the same thing."

"Oh… I'm sorry Ian," Selene said.

"Yo bro, you know why they call it PMS?" Tupp asked.

Ian eyed him curiously. "Why's that?"

"Cuz 'Mad Cow Disease' was already taken!" Tupp answered, breaking out into a laughing fit.

"Tupp, what the fuck?" Selene said, giving him a punch on the arm.

Laughter slipped out of Ian's face, breaking his melancholy, if only for a few moments. "Thanks bro," Ian said, extending a fist bump.

"Pardon this unscheduled stop everyone," the old voice Ian recognized as Ingo's called out. "If I may have some private time with Ian, it would be greatly appreciated."

"Uh… sure?" Tupp said, joining Selene as they departed.

Ian watched Ingo carefully. The older man with the train conductor hat and Pearl Clan sweater approached with a serene calm Ian found almost suspicious and took a seat next to Ian on his resident boulder. "I apologize if I am intruding, Ian," Ingo said. "But I felt a need to get involved."

"So, am I getting kicked out of Team Skull?" Ian asked, meeting the gaze of Ingo's silver eyes.

"Not that I'm aware of," Ingo said. "I'm not here on any Pearl Clan business, if you can believe me. It's just when I see something blocking the track ahead of good people, I feel compelled to clear it no matter who they are."

Heh, train terms. "No offense sir, but you barely know me. How do you know I'm a good person?"

"Well, first, how you dove on the sword when you and Plumeria appeared before our little council. Not even a day has passed since, and I understand why Plumeria did not want to disclose your Sawsbuck's abilities," Ingo said. "And second, the fact that you are still here, still conflicted about words spoken in anger."

Ian exhaled, realizing the depths to Ingo's observation.

"You must be going through so much, young man," Ingo continued. "You said you have been in this world for three weeks. And it appears you have retained your memory from whence you came?"

Ian nodded. "Yeah… I heard you were actually in a similar situation, just not quite having all of your memory." I'm not sure I have the patience for him to explain his backstory right now.

"Mmmm…" Ingo said. "You have sharp ears. A vast majority of my earlier life's memories are gone. When I dream I see hints and flashes, fleeting visions, close enough to grasp, but they become just out of reach when I get my hands on them…" Ingo paused. "But I have come to speak to you today not to tell you my life's story or my troubles, although I may share them…" Ingo paused and changed his tone to a brisk, authoritative one. "Look into my eyes, Ian." Ingo hunched over, focusing his intense gaze on Ian, and Ian kept his sullen eyes locked in with Ingo's silvery pair. After a good ten seconds of study, Ingo broke eye contact. "Whatever it is that torments you Ian, it shows in your eyes."

Ian swallowed his tongue, realizing the elder in front of him was someone worth listening to every word.

"I would see the same torment in my own reflection during my early days in the Pearl Clan. And I saw the same pain in the eyes of a young man named Rei, back in Hisui," Ingo explained. That was the name of the Legends Arceus protagonist, right? The male one at least. "He was a good friend. Younger than you when he arrived in Hisui. I didn't know him for a while, but he was always looked at with suspicion by many of his comrades in Jubilife Village. Yet he persevered, he used his vast knowledge, knowledge that only made him more suspicious to his comrades…" Ingo paused. "I suppose you know how that feels?"

Ian gulped. "Yeah… Did Plumeria tell you anything specific?"

Ingo cleared his throat. "Nothing specific, she told me she was sworn to secrecy, which I must respect. But she did tell me that you told her a small fraction of knowledge you did not want to discuss, yet she pushed you, and that fraction of knowledge did trouble her greatly. It troubled her in ways she could not comprehend."

Ian nodded. "That's fair…"

Ingo then put his arm around Ian's shoulder, embracing him, his voice wavering with genuine emotion. "And if that small of a fraction upset her so, I cannot fathom the burden you carry now, young man." Ian felt his eyes begin to water and he closed them, trying to blink back the tears. Ingo squeezed his shoulder tighter, as if reminding him he was not alone. Ian tightened his throat to stifle any sobs that wanted to make themselves known, and he just sat there for who knows how long, inhaling, exhaling, and letting the emotion wash over him.

Finally Ian developed the strength to speak. "Thank you, Ingo… I really needed that."

"You are more than welcome to it, anytime my young friend," Ingo said. "Would you indulge me telling a short tale of my early days with the Pearl Clan?"

Ian nodded. "You have my full, un-divided attention, sir."

"And you have my thanks," Ingo said, retreating his arm from Ian's shoulder and tipping his hat out of respect. "When I first arrived in the Pearl Clan, I knew so very little. I recognized so few Pokemon, but somehow, seeing them in action, in battle, and interacting with them, holding them, petting them, it was like I had done it all my life. I knew Type matchups yet couldn't say what Type most Pokemon were… It was even more baffling to me than to my own comrades. Irida's predecessor, a very forthright man, finally had enough of my 'suspicious fables' as he called them. I was cast out for a night, but I did not return the next morning, nor the morning after. A woman, the Lady Cogita of the Ancient Retreat took me in and heard my story. She comforted me when I told her of the knowledge I apparently knew but did not consciously know, and of how much it pained me."

Ian nodded, waiting on every word.

"When I finished my tale, she told me that I was not the first to befall such a situation, and that I would not be the last. She claimed to have seen a number of people like me over her long life. Some would go off into the wilderness, trying to make sense of things. She rarely heard from them again. But the ones who took it all in stride, who soldiered on and sought purpose in their new, and so different lives, would find peace with their truths, whatever they were."

Ian nodded solemnly.

"And so I will tell you what she told me, and what I told young Rei when he and I had a conversation not unlike this," Ingo said, the words weighing heavily. "Follow wherever your heart leads, and once there, commit to doing the most good you can. You will not solve the world's problems, but you will find peace and purpose in doing so." With that, Ingo arose from the boulder, and for the first time in hours, Ian did as well. The two embraced a short time, no words needing to be exchanged.

"Can I ask… What can you remember of your… former life?" Ian asked meekly.

"Of course… Images of buildings that tower into the sky, loud machines rumbling by and… a man… A man clad in white, very much like the clothes I woke up in Hisui in, all those years ago. For so long I thought it was me I was seeing, but Rei had a different thought that stuck with me… He said it might have been a brother of mine. After that it was like something unlocked, I remembered standing side by side with someone very much like me, locked in combat, with smiles on our faces. He had some great, muscular brown beast, and I, a dark blue creature made of stone…" Ingo paused. "I know in my heart that figure is my brother, and the more I see of this world, the more it is like the one Rei described, and where he believed I might truly be from. Part of me thinks that figure, my brother, may still be out there…" Ingo sniffled as a slight tear fell down his cheek."... looking for me."

"Sir, have you thought of looking for him?" Ian asked.

Ingo shook his head quickly. "A little… but the Pearl Clan, my people, we are in dire need. Perhaps he is out there, but I am needed here. If I were to leave for my own selfish purpose and by an act of providence, find him, and then find out a terrible fate befell my beloved comrades here? I would not be able to smile again. Therefore I cannot leave them until I know they are safe and secure…" Ingo cleared his throat. "But enough of that sad talk, I reckon your ears have tired by now?"

Ian shook his head. "No, not at all."

Ingo chuckled lightly. "I did put some thought into it, but I realized looking for my brother, whose name I know not, and whose garb seems to be irregular in this world, would be like hunting for a Cherubi tree without knowing the fruit the tree bears."

Ian felt a small, hopeful grin sneak onto his face and words came to him. "Ingo, we may have just met, but when this is all done, when the Ultra Rift closes up, and the Pearl Clan has found a true home, I want to help you find your brother."

"It will be harder than finding a Zorua in the Fieldlands, I think," Ingo replied.

"I think I'll be able to help narrow it down at least," Ian said, his smile widening.

"Regardless of your ability, I would be honored to have you, when this is all said and done…" Ingo turned his attention to the Ultra Rift to give it a look.

"At the beginning of this I thought you were going to try to recruit me," Ian said.

Ingo shook his head with a knowing laugh, and turned around one last time. "It would have been an insult to the memory of our late, great hero, Rei." Ingo tipped his hat and turned back around, heading back into town, the sky having now darkened significantly overhead. The Ultra Rift shown beautifully atop the summit, with Ian allowing himself to be mesmerized by the rainbow pattern of colors it had cycled into. Ian kept his arms folded, observing the bizarre phenomenon as Ingo's words replayed in his brain. It was like getting advice from a guru or something… To think, out of all of the people I could've met in this world, it's a guy who not only has some first hand experience of what I'm going through, but actively knew someone who may well have been going through exactly this situation too…

Ian's reflection lasted for some time before dainty footsteps hit his ears. "Ian Cougar?" Irida's soft, angelic voice asked.

"Has it been three hours?" Ian asked.

"A little while past it actually," Irida said. "But I wanted to give you space."

Ian nodded. "I appreciate it."

"I've heard you and Lady Plumeria got into a fierce argument earlier," Irida said.

"That we did…" Ian said.

"Pardon me for being so forward but, I feel inclined to tell you. If Team Skull ever does you wrong, we would happily accept you Ian," Irida said.

Ian felt a snarky reply about her Sawsbuck fixation take root in his mind, but he figured he best avoided it. She might become my boss if Plumeria's pissed enough at me. "I appreciate it."

"And not just for your Sawsbuck. Lian and Ingo both have high praise for you," Irida said.

Ian nodded. "When did Ingo tell you that?"

"Earlier today," Irida said. "Why do you ask?"

"I just spoke with him."

"This is where he went off to?" Irida asked.

"Yeah… You know, after the blow up with Plumeria and before I spoke to Ingo, I thought I was going to just go to Malie City and be done with all of this… The Ultra Rift, Surge, Breon… all of this nonsense," Ian explained.

"And has that changed?" Irida asked.

"It might have… I'll need to sleep on it," Ian answered.

"Well I do have a spare room with a bed made just for you, since I believe Plumeria will not have you at the guest house tonight," Irida said.

"Probably for the best," Ian said.

"There is a pot of tea ready to be heated up by my Ninetales, should you wish," Irida mentioned.

"Thanks…" Ian said. "But I'm not much of a tea guy." A chilling wind swept over him, and Ian realized what was needed. He felt around his belt for Sawsbuck's Heal Ball in the nighttime darkness and released his blessed stag. "Let's do a once-over and finish up for the day, bud," Ian ordered.

Sawsbuck sprung into action, its whitened form dancing like a ghost in the light of the moon and Ultra Rift.

"I shall await on my front balcony for you, Ian," Irida said, stepping away.

***

Irida awoke him at the crack of dawn for more Sawsbuck use, and when he finished up, Colress awaited him in the middle of the street with his signature unsettling grin. "Up bright and early as well, Ian?" Colress asked.

"Yes indeed," Ian said. "The Pearl Clan needs its Sawsbuck fix."

"Would you care for some breakfast for you and your team?" Colress said.

"I'm allowed to have it?" Ian asked, still not sure what was happening with him and Team Skull.

Colress scoffed. "Of course! Your Sawsbuck is the main reason I asked to be escorted by Team Skull in the first place."

"Oh… Bad news, Plumeria and I had an argument yesterday and I'm not entirely sure I'm going with them now…" Ian explained.

Colress took a quick look around to make sure no one was nearby and closed in on Ian, smiling creepily. "How foolish of them. Were you planning on staying here, if that's the case?"

Ian grimaced. "I wasn't sure…"

Colress snickered wickedly, making Ian get goosebumps. "I will mention you would be most welcome to join me in Malie City. Back in true civilization. Assuming you were interested in that."

"That's something I haven't ruled out…"

Colress suddenly turned and waved exuberantly to something behind Ian. "Oh, my Team Skull friends! When do we depart?"

"After Sawsbuck's next blessing, a little under three hours from now," Plumeria's voice said bitterly. Ian turned around, seeing Plumeria flanked by Selene and Rapp. She pointed directly at Ian. "We need to talk."

Sounds like a breakup's coming. "Okay."

Plumeria led Ian a few dozen feet away. Plumeria pivoted and turned to Ian, her eyes stoic. "I shouldn't have yelled at you yesterday."

Ian nodded. "I shouldn't have shit-talked your leadership."

Plumeria nodded. "I know it's not an excuse, but I've been PMSing real hard the past couple days. Doesn't help we're the Pearl Clan's bitch. I'm feeling very vulnerable, and you're feeling very vulnerable. So I'll explain like this…"

Ian folded his arms, but indicated she should continue.

"We need you Ian. Po Town needs you. This whole fuckin' expedition's pointless if you leave. So… even though I have thousands of questions I want to ask you, I promise I will only ask about what's needed, and I will not press you for further details about what you know," Plumeria explained. "I clearly can't handle it."

Ian grimaced, remaining silent.

"And I know I said that before, but your leaving destroys us, so I'm effectively at your mercy now too. I promise I will trust you and I will trust your judgement about what you disclose. I also trust that you won't abuse this power over me," Plumeria said coldly.

I'm still not sure if I want to stick around long term, but going with them gets me to Malie City's outskirts and I'll get more time to scout Colress. "Okay," Ian said hoarsely.

Plumeria sighed with relief. "Thank you Ian. Good news is you won't have to deal with Hyde until we come back, which should be a plus."

"Just make sure he doesn't get too flirty with Irida," Ian said.

Plumeria rolled her eyes. "Dumbass can't even stay in a chair for a week and not start problems." Plumeria held her fist out, eyeing him expectantly. Ian fist-bumped her hesitantly, studying her face for anything off. "Also we should have a code word."

"What?" Ian asked.

"For when I need to ask you a that kind of question," Plumeria said.

"Okay…" Ian grumbled. He initially started thinking on what the code word would be, but decided this was a Plumeria thing.

"Considering I never called you this, but it wouldn't raise suspicion to any party members, I'll say 'Coogz,'" Plumeria suggested.

Ian shrugged. "That works."

He turned to leave and took a couple steps before Plumeria meekly said "Coogz."

Ian turned back around with a scowl. "What?"

Plumeria stepped closely to him, hushing her voice to a whisper. "Do you know who this Colress guy is? He gives me the creeps."

"He was a bad guy in Unova, the top scientist for the evil team. He developed a machine that used a Legendary Pokemon's power to cover a whole city in ice."

Plumeria's eyes widened. "Oh…"

Ian shook his head quickly. "He went through a redemption and basically became a good scientist here in Alola."

"So, he's okay now?"

Ian shrugged. "I'm really not sure. Still scoping him out. Lian thinks he likely came from the Ultra Rift actually…"

"Oh… Has he said anything about it?" Plumeria asked.

Ian shook his head. "He said he came from an Ultra Wormhole, but he has his memory so that kind of rules that out…"

"Yeah," Plumeria said as she exhaled. "So, I figured he was bad news, but he seems like a 'big picture' guy. We're small fries to him. We can escort him, get paid, and never have to deal with him again."

"That's not a bad idea," Ian said.

"Okay, one more thing, not a 'Coogz' thing, I swear," Plumeria said.

Ian gave her an annoyed look.

"Has he tried to recruit you to go to Malie City with him?" Plumeria asked.

"...Yeah."

Plumeria sighed, her eyes already telling defeat. "Dammit." Plumeria began trudging back to the guest house, and Colress took the initiative and closed back in on Ian, his unsettling grin even wider than before.

"So I take it you'll be making the journey with Team Skull?" Colress asked.

Ian nodded. "Yeah, looks like it."

"Very good. Now let's get you some breakfast, I would like to see how your new Sandshrew deals with that Tyrunt."

Ian gulped. "I actually wasn't able to introduce myself to Sandshrew yesterday."

"Ah, those dreadful emotions getting in the way of progress," Colress said, a hint of disapproval in his glare. Colress manifested more condensed Pokemon food and Ian took a good handful. "And some protein bars for you."

Ian gave a thankful nod and got to work releasing his team. Sawsbuck came out first, followed by Wartortle and Pyroar. After feeding his original three, he noticed Colress pointing his Omnitron's antenna at each of his Pokemon as they ate. "Pardon me Ian, but what moves are you aware that Sawsbuck knows?"

"A lot…" Ian replied. It's pretty cool the four-move-limit from the games isn't a thing here. "Horn Leech, Leech Seed, Tackle, Double Kick, Bulldoze, Bullet Seed, Sand Attack, Zen Headbutt, Agility… and oh yeah, Megahorn," Ian recalled.

Colress chuckled as he eyed his omnitron. "That is not everything Sawsbuck is capable of at this time."

"Really?" Ian asked.

"Sawsbuck is also capable of the moves Take Down, Worry Seed, Charm, ohoho," Colress said, adjusting his glasses. "This blessed stag of yours also can use Throat Chop and Synthesis."

Ian's eyebrows rose. "Oh, a healing move like that? That's dope."

"And Throat Chop is a very strong move that should come in handy," Colress said.

"Hey Sawsbuck, wanna strut your stuff? I got your biggest fan here…" Ian teased. Sawsbuck bleated happily and pranced for a bit before his white snow-white antlers became enveloped in Dark Type Energy. Sawsbuck then charged forward at full speed before lowering itself temporarily and lunging forward with unnatural speed, jerking its antlers like a crowbar. Once the darkness faded from Sawsbuck's antler, his blessed stag circled back around with its tongue out, quite pleased with itself.

"Gnarly," Ian said excitedly before turning to Colress. "So, for Synthesis… how exactly does that work? Will Sawsbuck never need a Pokemon Center again since it heals depending on how sunny it is, right?"

Colress snickered mischievously. "How studied are you in Pokemon sciences, Ian?"

Ian shrugged. "It was pretty spotty…"

Colress gave a subtle eyeroll. "There may be different terms here but I'll tell you the ones from my world. Each Pokemon contains a pool of supernatural energy within their bodies we call the Spirit Core. Those supernatural energies that make Pokemon above regular biologics are what we call Corelight. Corelight is channeled into one of eighteen types of Lamina."

"Lamina?" Ian asked. Wait, eighteen? Is that the energy that makes a Pokemon move a certain type? "Like the Type Energy?" Ian asked.

"Type Energy? How crude," Colress observed. "But yes, 'Type Energy,' if that makes it easier for you. A Pokemon may only use a move like Synthesis, Recovery, Moonlight, et cetera, once every few hours. Using moves like those to repair bodily tissue so rapidly is incredibly draining on Corelight. It is why Pokemon often cannot use their most powerful moves in rapid succession. Their supernatural energies, or Corelight, needs to recharge."

"Okay… And what of Z-Moves? Those are vastly more powerful than most moves, wouldn't that drain a Pokemon of its energies?" Ian asked.

Colress' eyebrows rose in surprise. "A good pivot, no wonder you fascinate me so…" Colress paused. "But yes. Z-Moves are spurred by Z-Crystals, which amplify the power of the Lamina and the Corelight. But the amplifier is just that, it's an external amplifier. The Pokemon channels the same amount of Corelight to make the move happen, leaving its reservoir of Corelight likely still very well intact."

Ian nodded. "Okay, I think I get it. So Sawsbuck won't be using Synthesis all of the time, and Pokemon Centers are still gonna be a regular thing?" Ian asked.

Colress nodded. "Precisely. The healing machines in Pokemon Centers also rejuvenate the Pokemon's Corelight."

Oh, so this Corelight stuff is basically the real world mechanic for PP in the game. Got it. "Okay, thank you…"

"I assume it's time to get to Sandshrew and Tyrunt?" Colress said.

"Oh yeah," Ian said. "Well, I want to get acquainted with Sandshrew a bit before I throw it at Tyrunt."

Colress nodded. "Fair."

Ian grabbed his Alolan Sandshrew's Premier Ball and eyed Sawsbuck, Wartortle, and Pyroar. "Ready to meet a new team member?" Sawsbuck and Pyroar gave cries of affirmation, while Wartortle gave a dissatisfied croak. "Well here goes, nice to meet you, Sandshrew!" Ian called out as he tossed the Premier Ball into the air.

Out came the metallic, icy rodent. Alolan Sandshrew eyed Ian curiously as it chittered and squeaked, turning to its new environment and companions. It squeaked in amazement as it made eye contact with Sawsbuck, who bleated lightly. Sandshrew then turned to Pyroar and gave a frightened squeak before trying to curl up into a ball, incompletely though as it pulled against the metallic part of its shell. "Hey there little guy, I'm Ian," he said, kneeling down to comfort Sandshrew.

"Little girl," Colress corrected, now re-focused on his omnitron.

"Little girl, I mean," Ian said, extending his hand with one condensed pellet of food on it. "Pyroar's not gonna hurt you anymore. It honestly felt like overkill. I'm sorry for that."

Sandshrew slowly, carefully opened back up. Looking into Sandshrew's dark, suspecting eyes made Ian realize there was a tinge of blue in them. Sandshrew stuck one of its claws into the condensed food pellet and popped it into its mouth. A few seconds after chewing and swallowing, Sandshrew jolted suddenly before getting onto its back, exposing its pale belly and running one of its little claws over it soothingly as it cooed.

"Well you're a happy girl," Ian said, slowly letting his hand caress Sandshrew's softer tummy. Sandshrew let out an even more satisfying coo.

"And Tyrunt?" Colress asked.

Ian eyed Colress nervously. "Uh… I don't know, maybe I can give Sandshrew some time before it has to deal with Tyrunt…" Ian said. "What moves does it have?"

"Hmm…" Colress said, pointing its antenna at the Sandshrew. "So as suspected it didn't come through any sort of Ultra Wormhole or Ultra Storm. It has… oh, that is nice…"

"What?" Ian asked.

"Its ability is Slush Rush. Doubling its speed in snowy weather or when Snowscape is in effect," Colress explained. "Very rare, but an exceptional ability."

Ian smiled at Sandshrew, giving her a nod of acknowledgement. "Snowscape? Not Hail?"

"Hail?" Colress asked in befuddled amusement.

Oh wait, that changed in the Scarlet and Violet games. I only played through Violet a couple times, my knowledge on that game's pretty spotty.

"Snowscape increases Ice Type Defenses quite a bit while active," Colress explained. "Unfortunately for your Sandshrew, it has not learned Snowscape yet."

"Oh well, that'll be for later then," Ian said with a casual shrug.

"Not if I have anything to say about that," Colress said, whipping out his high tech Silph Bag. He swiped a few times on the little screen and then finally found what he was looking for, manifesting a clear case with a light blue disc inside of it. Ian realized it looked like a bigger version of an old PSP game disc. I never had one but I saw them a couple times.

"And here we are, a Snowscape Technical Machine. You never know when half a decade's worth of research into Ice Lamina will come in handy," Colress said with a proud grin. Ice Type Energy research? Oh yeah, he built the machine that Team Plasma used to cover cities in ice… Oh.
He brought the case with the light blue disc to Sandshrew and placed the disc near its body. Sandshrew began to suddenly glow with Ice Type Energy as the TM disc did as well with a slight hum. After a few seconds, disc and Pokemon returned to normal, and Sandshrew gave a curious series of squeaks as it got upright.

"Hey Sandshrew, Snowscape!" Ian ordered.

Sandshrew began to glow with Ice Type Energy once more and it crossed its arms for a moment before stretching them out in one motion. Suddenly frost, snow, and slush began emanating from Sandshrew, spreading in a radius reaching twenty feet in every direction. Sandshrew jumped in shock from its own ability, and nearly lost its balance, and Ian noticed a faint pulsing Ice Type Energy appearing on its body. The defense buff from Snowscape, by the looks of it. "Let's see what you can do, Sandshrew!" Ian called out excitedly.

Sandshrew cheered as well and suddenly it slid a good ten feet in a second and a half, with Sandshrew losing her balance and falling over, giving an embarrassed squeak. "Gonna take some getting used to, right girl?"

Sandshrew started practicing maneuvers within Snowscape's radius, and while Ian watched, Colress cleared his throat. "The other moves would be Scratch, Defense Curl, Mist, Rollout, Fury Cutter, Metal Claw, Mud Slap, Powder Snow, Crush Claw, and Ice Shard. Also Snowscape now."

Ian nodded. "Thank you sir."

Colress shook his head. "No need to 'sir' me Ian. Those days are long behind me."

Ian nodded. "Gotcha."

"So, are we ready for Tyrunt?" Colress asked.

Ian tried to quash his fear, but even Sandshrew could tell something was up as it stopped to look at him. "Might as well…" Ian said, readying Tyrunt's Ultra Ball. "Sandshrew, you should get a Defense Curl in while you can." Sandshrew nodded and obeyed, its thick, outer armor glowing with Normal Type Energy. "Tyrunt, time to eat," Ian said, trying to sound confident.

Tyrunt manifested from the ball with an angry, fierce roar, eyeing its fellow team members with rage. It suddenly slipped on the icy terrain from Sandshrew's Snowscape and tumbled over, hitting the cold ground hard. It gave an annoyed snarl, but Ian noticed something he did not expect. Alolan Sandshrew was pointing at the fallen Tyrunt and eliciting a series of squeaks that reminded Ian of- Laughter? Is Sandshrew laughing at Tyrunt? I don't think that's gonna go well.

Tyrunt got up in a furious rage, roaring a battle cry as it charged Sandshrew. Sandshrew quickly slid away, but Tyrunt continued charging it. Sandshrew quickly ran out of ice, and it now stood helplessly as Tyrunt closed in, jaws open.

"Sandshrew!" Ian called out, desperately reaching for its Premier Ball.

"Hold it, Ian," Colress warned. "Let us see what unfolds."

"Tyrunt's gonna eat Sandshrew whole!" Ian fired back.

Colress gave a knowing, sinister laugh. "I would like to see it try." Something about Colress' tone didn't sound like he had total confidence in Sandshrew, but that he literally wanted to see it.

"Tyrunt, stop!" Ian called out desperately. Tyrunt dove its head down as Sandshrew curled into a ball with another Defense Curl, and Tyrunt took Sandshrew into its open mouth, growling and groaning as it bit down on Sandshrew's armor. Sandshrew's panicked squeals could be heard between Tyrunt's savage growls, but Sandshrew remained curled up and in the grips of Tyrunt's mouth. Tyrunt lifted its head up to get gravity on its side, but Sandshrew remained stuck.

Tyrunt gave a savage battle cry and tensed, biting down with all of its might. Ian watched in morbid fascination as Tyrunt's monstrous growls slowly became more and more bewildered. Tyrunt tried to chomp down on Sandshrew once more, squeezing its jaws together stubbornly before the Alpha stopped, a higher pitched groan coming from it.

"What the…?" Ian asked.

Tyrunt spat Sandshrew out of its mouth, and a fragment of one of Tyrunt's razor sharp teeth fell to the ground. Ian watched on in amazement as Colress chuckled. "Do not worry Ian, Tyrunt's tooth will grow back good as new by tomorrow."

Sandshrew uncurled itself and began pointing and laughing at Tyrunt once again. What a little troll.

Tyrunt backed away, fear in its eyes for once as Sandshrew continued teasing it. Tyrunt snapped aggressively but realized its display was not received like it was supposed to. Ian noticed Sawsbuck, Wartortle, and Pyroar all watching on, seemingly amused. I see I'm not the only one who's gotten a bit de-sensitized being here.

"Here, let us feed Tyrunt and be done with it," Colress reminded Ian as he held out two condensed brown food pellets.

"Yeah…"

A couple hours later, Ian had his backpack on and his camelbak filled, heading to the guest house with Colress where the rest of Team Skull was preparing for their descent down the eastern face of Mount Lanakila when he noticed Irida, Ingo, and Nui approaching. "Come to wish us off?" Ian called out.

"Yes," Irida answered politely.

"Mostly just you two," Nui said, a hint of mischief in her tone.

Ian and Colress paused as the council members met up with them, notably out of earshot of the other Team Skull members. Irida opened her mouth first, and Ian was once again blown away by the serenity and deep blue of her eyes. "Ian, on behalf of the Pearl Clan and all of Makamae Town, we owe you so much but can only say thank you for the time being."

Ian nodded. "You gave us shelter and helped us. That's more than enough."

Nui cleared her throat. "I suppose I must apologize for the hostility I showed upon your arrival, Ian Cougar. You should not be held accountable for the sins of your predecessors, and I have to admit I'm still surprised that not all Team Skull members are bad." Nui paused, and a knowing grin came across her face. "Although I shouldn't be, considering Tapu Bulu put a blessing on your Pokemon. This island has no Kahuna still, and while you will certainly never be that, you have given me hope that Tapu Bulu does in fact know what it's doing."

Ian smiled uncertainly at the attempted compliment and nodded his head like a pseudo bow. "I appreciate the kind words, ma'am."

Irida stepped forward, extending her hand to his, which he met, her eyes feeling like they were piercing his soul. "And I hope to see you again, Ian."

Ian nodded. "Thank you."

Ingo stepped forward and shook Ian's hand as well. "Young Ian, I hope you are able to find your place, wherever that may be."

Ian gave Ingo a full bow with his head. "Thank you sir." Ian then smiled. "And no matter what happens, I am gonna see you again."

Ingo chuckled lightly. "I look forward to that day."

"Looks like our private time is up," Irida said quietly as Ian caught Plumeria approaching.

"Come to see us off?" Plumeria called out, a hint of aggression in her voice.

"Indeed, but we have become distracted," Irida said with a playful giggle.

"That's fine," Plumeria said, clearly not believing her own words. "So we're expecting to be gone for about a week's time, hopefully just six days. We appreciate you watching over Hyde while he heals," Plumeria said.

Irida nodded. "There will be a Driftwood Guild member who stays there tomorrow night, please make sure he's aware and will be hospitable."

Plumeria nodded. "Oh he will be, I assure you." Plumeria paused, but remembered something. "He asked if he could have some glue? There's a compartment on his watch that's a bit loose and he wants to make sure it stays together."

"Glue?" Irida asked.

"Glue? For a watch?" Nui asked, befuddled.

"It's very important to him," Ian said. "His late brother's last gift."

"Oh," Nui said, calming her tone. "Normally I wouldn't, but that seems a noble enough cause. I should still have some from a few Driftwood orders ago."

"Thank you, councilwoman," Plumeria said. "Thank you again for everything, and hopefully us and Sawsbuck will be back soon enough."

Irida eyed Ian, still as dazzling as ever. "We look forward to it," she said conclusively.

The descent was far easier than the ascent, and the one rough stretch of terrain was easily handled by Colress' floating Metagross, which got each of them paired up with to ride on. Plumeria was silent with him the whole way, although Colress and Tupp ensured there was always some sort of conversation ongoing. Ian did spot another Zygarde Cell three-quarters of the way through the trek.

It was late afternoon when the group finished the descent and Plumeria decided to set up camp next to a quaint waterfall. The moment Ian's shoes hit sand he felt the air become dryer somehow. Looking back up to Mount Lanakila, Ian grimaced as he thought about having to ascend it to Makamae Town again. I might just go to Malie City on that alone. After setting up camp, with Colress breaking out a very high tech, pre-constructed tent from his Silph Bag, Tupp approached Ian with a big grin on his face. "What do you want, Tupp?" Ian said skeptically. "When you're smiling like this and Selene's not involved, something's up."

Tupp nodded. "Yo bro, we here in the Haina Desert. Maybe we could look for some Pokemon."

Ian shrugged. "Actually not a bad idea." Ian got the Great Ball, Ultra Ball, and Poke Ball from his pack and showed them to Tupp. "Any preference on which one?"

Tupp shook his head. "Whatever's best for the Pokemon yo."

"Let's go ask if Plumeria lets us go out for a bit," Ian said. Not that Plumeria can refuse me, in all honesty. Ian went to the girls' tent where Plumeria and called for Plumeria, who poked her head out of the tent's flaps that functioned as a door seemingly in the middle of something.

"What?" She questioned.

"Tupp and I wanted to go look for a Pokemon to catch around here if that's cool," Ian asked.

Plumeria nodded quickly. "Sure. Selene and Rapp are doing the same thing actually. Don't go too far off, Breon's people patrol the southern part of the desert, and there's supposed to be an Alpha Krookodile den in the northern section."

"Thanks Big Sis," Tupp said.

"Bye," Plumeria simply, re-zipping the flaps of her tent together. Oh yeah, if she's PMSing and just hiked down a mountain…

Tupp turned to Ian with a dumb, excited smile. "Alpha Krookodile? Maybe there'll be a Sandile or something I can catch."

Ian rolled his eyes. "As long as we don't mess with the Alpha I'm okay."

Tupp nodded. "Deal."

The duo headed north in the late afternoon sun, with Ian catching sight of a spinning Baltoy and a couple flying Vullaby overhead.

"You want that Baltoy, yo?" Tupp asked.

Ian shook his head. "Hyde's got one, I've seemingly got him off my ass for now and I don't need any reason for him to get pissed off."

"You right," Tupp said. "While you were gone, all Hyde could talk about was that Irida chick. He's down even worse than I am for Selene."

Ian chuckled. "As long as he's got something to distract him from me. And I noticed you've been closer with Selene lately, how's that going?"

"I dunno bro, she was checking out that shirtless Pearl Clan dude all the time we were there," Tupp said.

Ian shrugged. "Gotta start working out more then."

Tupp nodded. "Yeah. Especially once we got more food coming through."

The duo continued on, and Ian spotted some Alolan Diglett's shifting through the sands in their way. "One of those?" Ian asked, pointing to Tupp.

"Nah bro, those things mess up the foundations of homes," Tupp said. "Whole of Po Town'll be on my ass," Tupp answered. Thankfully it didn't take long for something to catch Ian's eye up ahead. The sands shifted a good thirty to forty feet ahead, and Ian caught a glimpse of an orange creature rooted in the sand. Is that a Trapinch?

"Look at that yo!" Tupp said, pointing to the Trapinch disturbing the sand surrounding it. "That thing looks dope."

Ian readied the empty Poke Ball and almost handed it to Tupp but something caught his eye buzzing in the sky up above. The insectoid Pokemon had a green body with even darker green wings as it glided in the air easily. "Hey Tupp, look up."

"What?" Tupp asked.

Ian pointed at the Vibrava. "That's all you."

"What? Bro, why don't you want it?" Tupp asked.

"I already got a Dragon Type," Ian said. "I don't want to double up on types if I don't have to."

Tupp nodded, but realized something. "But you got Sawsbuck and Pyroar."

"I was under a time limit, remember?"

"Oh yeah…" Tupp said, focusing now on Vibrava.

Ian handed Tupp the Great Ball instead, and pointed up to Vibrava. "You're probably gonna want to use Golbat for this. Get to show me how far you and it have come."

"Yeah bro, let's go Golbat!" Tupp called out, throwing his Poke Ball to the sky. Golbat appeared with a raspy wheeze before locking onto the opposing Vibrava and engaging it. Vibrava took a moment to notice the large bat flying its way, but once it did, it fired a blast of dark blue energy. Dragon Breath?

Golbat barrel rolled away from the oncoming attack and continued closing in. Tupp…

"Alright Golbat, Toxic!" Tupp called out. Golbat wheezed once more, seemingly vomiting dark purple barbs at Vibrava, who dove to dodge. Vibrava's flight path got unsteady, and Ian noticed one of the barbs had in fact hit home.

"Excellent, Tupp," Ian said.

"So tell me why Golbat's had that the whole time," Tupp said lowly before shifting his voice. "Now, back off and use Air Cutter!"

Golbat did as ordered, putting some air distance between it and Vibrava. The green insectoid Pokemon charged at Golbat this time as Golbat fired an Air Cutter, which Vibrava adeptly dodged while still keeping its momentum and slamming into Golbat, Dark Type Energy around its mouth, causing Golbat to screech in pain. Oh that's Bite, maybe even Crunch…

Once released from Vibrava's mouth, Golbat fell motionlessly from the air for a couple seconds before regaining initiative, flapping its wings angrily. Vibrava manifested a couple stones which it then launched at Golbat. Ian tensed, remembering the practice exercise Tupp had shown him a few days back that Grimsley had been coaching him.

Golbat spun away from the oncoming stones and already had its wings glowing with Flying Type Energy as it fired another Air Cutter. The flying wedge of light blue Type Energy smacked into Vibrava, knocking it back. Ian pumped his fist excitedly, while Tupp kept his focus on the opponent, a proud smirk forming on his face.

Vibrava bounced back quickly and fired another Dragon Breath at Golbat, who dodged and tried the same maneuver again, this time with Vibrava dodging it. The two airborne Pokemon continued this dance of launching ranged attacks, dodging, and firing more off for a good minute and a half with neither side getting hit, but Vibrava was noticeably starting to weaken. This is textbook, Tupp.

Finally one of Vibrava's manifested stones smacked Golbat in the wing, crippling the bat as it fell back to the sand. Tupp recalled it before hitting the ground, but he tensed up. "It's gonna just flee if I get Gumshoos out."

Ian shrugged. "Maybe just keep your distance with Sobble. The poison's ticking it down."

Tupp nodded. "Okay…" Tupp exhaled deeply as he held Sobble's Poke Ball in his hand. "Just like practice, yo." The Poke Ball opened, and Sobble emerged with a determined cry. "Sobble, on your toes!"

Vibrava seemingly scoffed and charged the little amphibian. "Water Gun and roll!" Tupp ordered. Sobble fired a small blast of Water Gun at Vibrava that came at Vibrava so quickly the charging Pokemon was unable to dodge. It took the attack, barely changing course, and Sobble leapt out of the way, letting Vibrava swoop by, unsuccessful in its attack. Sobble fired another short stream of Water Gun as Vibrava repositioned, connecting once more. That's gonna add up, just don't get too cocky bro.

Vibrava's balance got unsteady, but it turned back around and its wings began glowing with Normal Type Energy. A wave of energy fired from Vibrava's wings, and Ian recoiled as the sound flared pain in his brain. Sobble cried out, clearly hurt, but steeled itself after the initial burst and got its head back in the game. Sobble then darted forward. Vibrava fired a Dragon Breath, and Sobble stopped suddenly and fired a Water Gun as Dragon Breath hit the empty ground in front of it.

This stream of Water Gun hit Vibrava square in its eye, causing the flying insectoid to cry out in pain as it began falling to the ground. Its wings flapped desperately, but it no longer had the strength to keep itself airborne. Sobble fired a longer, continuous stream of Water Gun, pelting Vibrava with more water. Vibrava collided with the sand, making a dust cloud from the impact, and Tupp hurried over right next to Sobble and tossed the Great Ball at Vibrava.

The ball bounced off Vibrava and opened, absorbing the Pokemon into itself. It shook once, twice, three times, but went still. "YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAH!" Tupp shouted in celebration. Sobble jumped on Tupp's leg and crawled up to his head, knocking Tupp's skull cap off his head as it celebrated as well.

Ian hollered as well, rushing to Tupp as he smacked Tupp's shoulder. The boys' jubilation lasted for a few minutes as Tupp celebrated his Sobble and newly caught Vibrava. Eventually they left the scene, heading back to camp as waves of euphoria overwhelmed the best buddies. As the campsite came into view, Tupp turned to Ian, talking hushedly . "This is just the beginning, yo. Imagine how strong we'll be in a few more weeks, even months!"

Ian smiled nervously, remembering he wasn't exactly sure if he'd be around for more than a few days. "Yeah…" He said, doing a bad job of hiding his unease.

"Hey Big Sis!" Tupp called out as Plumeria got up from crouching on the ground. "I caught a Vibrava!"

Plumeria tilted her head in surprise, folding her arms. "Really? You did?"

Ian nodded. "He was great. Got it poisoned with Golbat, stalled it out by dodging, then Sobble came in, kept dodging and finished it off." Tupp showed off the Great Ball proudly.

"Not bad at all, numbskull," Plumeria said. "And here I was worried when Ian gave you that Sobble I'd have to intervene in case it was getting abused."

"What?" Tupp asked.

"Nothing," Plumeria said quickly. "It's a flyer, something we'll be able to use if it evolves." Plumeria turned to Ian, her intense gaze implying something. Oh yeah, the EXP Candies.

"Plumeria!" Selene's desperate voice called out from south of the campsite, notably by herself.

The group of three turned to see Selene struggling to run, panting heavily. "These guys came, they took Rapp!"

"What?" Plumeria called back in shock. "Rapp's-"

"Kidnapped?" Ian asked aloud.

Selene collapsed against the sand. "Yeah…"

"Where'd they go?" Plumeria demanded.

"That way…" Selene said, pointing south, to where a few miles away laid the ocean and… Haina Town. The whispers of what Breon did to prisoners and concubines rushed back to Ian and he wordlessly grabbed Sawsbuck's Heal Ball and released it, his blessed stag manifesting in its summer form, with vibrant green bushes having taken root on its antlers.

"Ian…" Plumeria called out as Sawsbuck's vines helped Ian mount his Pokemon.

"How many are there?" Ian asked.

"Three. Toucannon's following them at a distance, look for it in the sky," Selene said.

"Got it!" Ian called out as Sawsbuck immediately leapt into motion, clouds of sand forming in their wake.

"We'll back you up!" Plumeria called out.

"Sawsbuck…" Ian whispered intensely. "Let's go." Sawsbuck burst into even faster than normal speed, Ian's eyes focused on the horizon for Selene's Toucannon.

Chapter 21 The Sands of Haina

Ian's whole body shook violently on Sawsbuck's back as the blessed stag bounded across the sands in a frenzy of motion. Ian held onto the vine-reins as best he could while keeping his eye to the sky for Selene's Toucannon, his neck being jerked around by whiplash doing little to help in that regard. Finally he spotted something a little ways ahead in the sky. It was maybe a hundred feet off the ground and mostly black, but when the bird Pokemon turned slightly he noticed the different angle showed multiple colors on its beak. There we are.

Ian pointed to the bird Pokemon. "Follow the Toucannon, Sawsbuck!" Ian shouted. Sawsbuck grunted with exertion as it locked on to its guide. Ian noticed clouds of dust were being brought up in Sawsbuck's wake and rolled his eyes. We won't exactly have the element of surprise here.

Sawsbuck continued charging forward, but its pace began to slow. Carrying me at this pace is not something we've practiced, in Sawsbuck's defense. "Sawsbuck, we can slow down a bit. I'll need you decently fresh for any confrontation." Sawsbuck gave an exasperated grunt and slowed the pace a little more lightly, yet still pushing on with purpose. Using a hand to move the leaves on Sawsbuck's antlers out of the way, Ian noticed a dust cloud coming up ahead and smiled. Found you, bastards. A good fifteen feet to his left there were a series tracks in the sand.

Toucannon squawked loudly to get Ian's attention, having turned around and started flying at him, descending slowly. It gave another loud call and glided over him, Ian figured it was going to guide whatever backup was coming. If they can catch up, which I doubt, Sawsbuck's been hauling ass. The shadowy figures Ian pursued seemed to shift slightly, and Ian realized one had broken from the group. Either their enforcer or trying to delay me. Something hovered next to the approaching and then disappeared in moments.

"Get ready for anything, Sawsbuck," Ian reminded his blessed stag. Still panting and tiring, Sawsbuck gave an affirmative bleat. As the figure came into sight, Ian noticed the man wore a camouflaged military uniform. If these are Breon's guys that means they're former ASF, right? Checks out. The male figure approaching came closer into view, his tanned skin popping out against the desert sands, and Ian noticed the smirk on his face, and Ian realized how Rapp had likely gotten abducted in the first place. "Sawsbuck, a Ghost Type's coming! Ready Throat Chop!"

Sawsbuck gave a loud bleat as the plant life on its antlers began to glow with a black energy, and moments later a floating, purple balloon with eyes and stringy arms appeared, glowing with a dark pink energy. Sawsbuck gave a fierce battle cry and swung its head down, smashing its antlers into the Drifloon, a loud pop sound hitting Ian's ears as Drifloon faded back into invisibility.

The smirking man up ahead froze in surprise as Sawsbuck made a huge leap ahead, closing in on Drifloon's trainer. Ian noticed the man reaching for his belt, and inspiration hit Ian. "Leech Seed!" Sawsbuck fired a decently sized seed capsule, which burst into a tangle of vines that tightened around the Haina Town trainer like ropes. As Sawsbuck rode by, Ian flipped the bird, pressing Sawsbuck on ahead. He wasn't even eighty feet away and could tell the two trainers and the Tauros that rode along between them had hurried their pace, but Sawsbuck was clearly too fast for them.

"Let's go around and get in front of them," Ian said. Sawsbuck was tiring more still, and he figured his blessed stag would be able to get a momentary break if they cut off the kidnappers. Sawsbuck slowed as it broke to the right, and as Sawsbuck overtook the fleeing kidnappers, Ian saw Rapp, tied up and unconscious on the back of their Tauros. The two men in the same camo uniforms as their now tied up comrade eyed Ian tensely and readied Poke Balls as Sawsbuck took its place between the marauding trainers and their intended route.

An Alolan Dugtrio and the unsettling form of an Araquanid manifested from the duo's Poke Balls. Two versus one, dammit. Grimsley's answer to when Ian asked about using multiple Pokemon in a do-or-die situation came to the forefront of his mind. "Remember when I told you how Pokemon pick up on your thoughts and convictions? That bond is how they're able to understand your commands. But that bond is diluted when multiple Pokemon are out at once. When you're out of battle, this matters little, But in a tense do-or-die battle, commands get murky. The metaphorical wires get crossed, and things get mixed up. Even Alder, the greatest trainer I've ever known, has difficulty commanding two Pokemon at once."

Ian grimaced as he noticed the blonde haired Dugtrio sinking into the sand with ease, while Araquanid stayed back with the trainers. One plays offense, the other plays defense, shit.

"Get out of the way and we'll let you live, punk!" One of them called out.

"Give back my friend and I'll let you guys live!" Ian retorted.

"Wrong answer!" The other man called back, to which Ian just flipped the bird.

"Sawsbuck, how you holding up?" Ian asked. Sawsbuck grunted, dismissing Ian's concern. "You're truly living up to that blessing today, bud. Let's start with Agility."

Sawsbuck glowed with Psychic Type Energy as it alternated steps on its legs. "Alright bud, stay in motion so Dugtrio can''t pop up and break your legs, and let's start working on that Araquanid. Use Horn Leech." Sawsbuck disappeared in a flash, appearing ten feet ahead and leaping across the battlefield, antlers aglow with Grass Type Energy as it smacked into Araquanid, sticking its antler into the massive arachnid's protective bubble of water around its head. Araquanid's legs wriggled with pain, but Sawsbuck had to quickly bound away to avoid a counter attack. "Don't stay in one place for too long!" Ian warned, remembering Dugtrio was underground.

Ian noticed one of his adversaries looking into the distance behind Ian. He turned and realized there likely were reinforcements coming. Shit, so we're on a timer? Araquanid's just here to stall- The sand beneath Ian's feet began to shift and vibrate and Ian jumped as high as he could as the sand gave way to the Alolan Dugtrio's hair and rest of its body. "Fuckers," grunted as he dashed away from his underground assailant. Dugtrio sank beneath the sands, but Ian knew he had to keep in motion as well.

Sawsbuck gave a battle cry and was already charging his way when Ian waved him off. "Focus on Araquanid, we probably don't have much time!" Sawsbuck gave Ian a look which he could tell meant his blessed stag didn't approve of the order. Ian debated on sending Pyroar or Wartortle out, but Grimsley's cautious warning played over in his head. Ian kept jogging, trying to keep his path erratic to throw off his underground predator, and another few words came to the forefront of his mind. "Attacking a trainer with a Pokemon is seen as the greatest dishonor one can command a Pokemon to do, but if you as a trainer are attacked with intent, you are expected to reciprocate in kind." Ian took one last look at Rapp's kidnappers and smirked. You asked for it fuckers.

Ian felt the sand around him begin to vibrate and he took to the air, this time only a couple feet from his spot, trying to keep Dugtrio from tracking him. Dugtrio burst from beneath the surface a few feet ahead of him with an aggressive cry, and Ian flipped the bird at his assailant as he scampered away. He refocused on Sawsbuck's fight and noticed the aquatic arachnid was covered in a tangle of vines as floating orbs of Grass Type Energy floated to Sawsbuck, who seemed pretty tired still. Ian also noticed the bubble around Araquanid's head had grown twice its size. Something tells me that's Aqua Ring. Ian continued jogging in erratic ways, and he looked over his shoulder, seeing no one was approaching quite yet. A bit more time.

"Sawsbuck, Horn Leech!" Ian roared once more.

"Leech Life!" One of the opposing trainers called out.

Sawsbuck bounded with unreal speed to Araquanid, striking the arachnid on the side, but one of its legs got under Sawsbuck and tripped is blessed stag, and Araquanid's fangs appeared from outside of the bubble and bit into Sawsbuck, causing it to yelp in pain. Ian noticed orbs of lighter green Type Energy being sucked out of Sawsbuck, and Ian figured that was likely Bug Type Energy. They're just gonna keep life-stealing off each other until reinforcements get here.

When Araquanaid could hold on no more, Sawsbuck got up and leapt away, favoring its right side. Ian realized he'd slowed down, and he jumped suddenly, barely avoiding Dugtrio's assault from underneath. These guys have done this before. And that's the third time you almost got me, no more mercy.

Before Ian could realize it, a huge blue of light brown Ground Type Energy zoomed at Dugtrio and crashed into the digging mole Pokemon, causing a huge cloud of sand to appear. Ian looked on in shock and amazement as the dust settled around Sawsbuck, who stood over its vanquished foe triumphantly. Was that High Horsepower? Sawsbuck could learn that, right? "I owe you the biggest dinner of your fucking life, Sawsbuck!" Ian said, noting the KO'd Dugtrio at the bottom of an impact crater. Sawsbuck slammed one of its hoofs into the ground in agreement.

"Okay Sawsbuck, one down. We need to interfere with Araquanid. Horn Leech it in the back and then Throat Chop the guys," Ian said. "Don't kill 'em if you can, even though they do deserve it." Sawsbuck took a few moments to catch its breath before trotting back at Araquanid, who seemed rejuvenated. Ian heard a snicker of a laugh from his opponents and he looked over his shoulder, noticing three approaching figures in the distance. Three minutes, tops. Ian's heart thumped in his chest and narrowed his eyes on his adversaries. "Sawsbuck, Agility!" Ian commanded. He wasn't sure if the initial Agility had worn off, but figured Sawsbuck would need all of the juice he had left to pull this off.

Ian noticed one of the opposing trainers reaching for another Poke Ball and grimaced. "Sawsbuck, Horn Leech Araquanid from behind, then Throat Chop the bastards," he ordered lowly, making sure his adversaries couldn't hear. Sawsbuck immediately came out of its Agility dance and launched itself at Araquanid, covering dozens of feet in mere seconds. Before Ian could process what was happening, Sawsbuck appeared behind Araquanid with its antlers already bright green and stuck one into Araquanid. Araquanid's legs collapsed momentarily, and Sawsbuck turned its attention onto the trainers. Ian noticed a Krokorok had been let out, but it seemed barely able to stand with multiple wounds on its body. Selene didn't let them go quietly, I bet.

Sawsbuck charged one of the trainers, antlers aglow with Dark Type Energy and smacked its antler right in the man's neck, lifting him off the ground before landing on the sand with a thud, clutching his throat. The other turned to run, but Sawsbuck caught up to him in a mere moment, its antler encased in Dark Type Energy as it smacked the other trainer's throat from the side, sending the man into the air for a second before landing on his shoulder. He too was clutching his neck in moments, and Ian began rushing over as Sawsbuck dropped a Horn Leech on Araquanid, forcing the terrifying arachnid to back off.

As Ian got closed in to the scene, Sawsbuck felled the sandy crocodile with a Horn Leech. The Tauros carrying Rapp's limp body exhaled loudly, as if sending a warning. Sawsbuck grunted loudly, focusing on Tauros, to which the angry bull Pokemon grunted as well, winding up its front hoof as if to charge. "Leech Seed the legs," Ian ordered coldly. Tauros began to charge, but vines bursted forth, constricting its legs together as it fell face first into the sand, Rapp's unconscious body still strapped to the saddle, but hanging awkwardly.

Ian went to Rapp and found the restraint's buckle that kept her on the saddle and gently undid it so as to not disturb the Tauros underneath. Ian noticed Sawsbuck staring daggers at the bull and smiled proudly. He finished pulling her off and checked to see if she had any wounds and noticed her Poke Balls were still on her belt. Really? Saves me the time of looking, at least. No injuries were apparent, but she had lost her hat and had her mouth gagged, along with having her hands and legs bound with zip-ties, but other than that seemed okay for the most part. Thanks goodness. Ian put her up on Sawsbuck's back, securing her with a couple vines, realizing he didn't have a knife or anything to undo her bounds. He took the gag out of her mouth and tossed it aside before looking over to the approaching figures, who were still a couple minutes out. He made his way over to the two men still clutching their throats and spitting up blood.

"Alright you motherfuckers, I'm gonna say this once," Ian growled, hatred in his eyes. "Next time you fuck with any girl from Team Skull, I'm feeding you to my Alpha Tyrunt. You got that?"

Both men nodded fearfully, wheezing and rasping disgusting, guttural sounds. "Good," Ian said simply and got onto Sawsbuck's back as well. Sawsbuck strained for a moment with the extra weight, but Ian noticed the three approaching figures coming closer and gave Sawsbuck a strong smack on the side, urging his blessed stag into motion. The first minute and a half of the ride went amazingly smoothly, to which Ian chalked up Agility's effects still lingering, but Sawsbuck began to truly tire not long after. Ian turned around, barely able to make out the figures in the distance. "Alright Sawsbuck, I'll get off," Ian said, sliding off and lightening the loud. Ian then pointed ahead, figuring Plumeria and the rest of the squad wouldn't be too far behind. "I have Pyroar and Wartortle if they come at me, but I doubt it. Go on ahead."

Sawsbuck gave a bleat in protest, but Ian shook his head. "Biggest dinner of your life bro. I promise you." Sawsbuck exhaled in annoyance but trotted on ahead. Ian began to jog, making sure to check behind him intermittently, but slowed to a walk as he figured no one would be pursuing. Ian realized how tired he felt as the adrenaline wore off, and he couldn't wipe the smile off his face as he walked toward the base of the mountain where Plumeria had set up camp.

It took a good ten minutes of walking, but Ian finally saw Sawsbuck, with Rapp now off its back, approaching him, overjoyed. "See, I told you I'd be fine!" Ian said as Sawsbuck pulled up, clearly looking the worse for wear. Ian began scratching Sawsbuck behind its ears, eliciting a joyous bleat.

Sawsbuck suddenly stiffened and rushed behind Ian as a streak of light appeared in his peripheral vision. Sawsbuck gave an agonizing cry as it tanked the electrical blast and a light crackle of thunder hit Ian's ears. Oh shit, the first guy? Out from behind a nearby boulder, the first man and a Manectric appeared, a sinister smirk on the man's face. "That deer of yours ain't lasting much longer," he taunted.

Ian smirked. "Hey asshat, you got off easy earlier. You sure you wanna fuck that up now?"

The man scoffed. "It's clearly worn out, and I don't even know if you got other usable Pokemon. Manectric, Thunderbolt!"

"High Horsepower!" Ian roared. Manectric fired a bolt of lightning at Sawsbuck, to which the blessed stag bowled through as it surged forward, clad in Ground Type Energy. Manectric realized its now dire situation and turned to flee but Sawsbuck's charging form was too fast and it crashed into Manectric with a huge thud, kicking up tons of dust and sand. "What the hell?" The man gasped.

When the dust settled, Ian smirked as he saw an impact crater with Manectric at the bottom, completely unconscious. "Hey asswipe," Ian began as he approached the adversary. "This is the part where you surrender to me."

The man looked on in a panic. "I got another Pokemon…"

Ian shrugged. "Send it out. But you're not leaving this alive."

The man tensed, shriveling into a wimpy demeanor. "Your Sawsbuck must be tired by now. My boys'll come for me."

Ian chuckled lightly. "Hey Sawsbuck, Synthesis."

Sawsbuck's whole body began to glow a brilliant, vibrant green as a low hum hit Ian's ears. After three seconds, the light dimmed and Sawsbuck appeared very refreshed. Ian noticed a couple bruises on its right side, however. Oh yeah, Synthesis heals more closer to noon, right? It's gotta be 4:00 at least.

"Shit!" The man exclaimed as he bolted. Ian laughed as an idea came over him, and he grabbed the Ultra Ball from his belt. "Hey Tyrunt, dinner time!" Out came the six foot tall baby tyrannosaur with a ferocious growl before it locked its eyes on the fleeing meal. Tyrunt charged, not able to catch up to Breon's man initially, so Tyrunt then glowed with brown energy and manifested multiple floating rocks, launching them at her prey. Ancient Power. One of the rocks connected with the back of the man's calf and he fell over with a grunt.

Moments later the man was on the sand clutching his left leg screaming curses between groans of agonizing pain. Tyrunt growled excitedly as it closed in and it leaped into the air, a savage roar of delight escaping its jaws. Ian held up Tyrunt's Ultra Ball and shot the recall beam into the air, hitting Tyrunt right before it landed on the man and sank its jaws into him. The man moaned loudly, clearly distressed. Ian slowly made his way over, a scowl on his face and euphoric anger in his veins. Upon standing over the man, Ian studied him suspiciously. "Are all of Breon's goons as creepy as you guys?"

"Lord Breon will come get me… You're fucked…" The man spat, clutching his lower leg.

"Lord Breon? What a jackass," Ian said with a chuckle. "Well, tell your lord of perverts that if any more of his guys come into this desert, I'm feeding them to my Tyrunt."

"Yeah? And who the fuck are you?" The man retorted, his voice strained with pain.

"Ian Cougar," Ian said coldly, noticing one of the man's hands was slowly creeping to his Poke Ball belt. "You send another Pokemon out and Tyrunt gets to finish the job. I told your companions the same thing and they didn't make a fuss so, you're not necessary. The longer I interact with these guys, the more I start to reconsider my unofficial policy of no killing.

"Okay, okay," the man said, putting one hand up.

Ian turned to Sawsbuck, feeling the message was sufficiently sent and hopped onto his blessed stag before it quickly darted off. After a couple minutes of riding, Ian started to reflect on his actions. I didn't realize I'd be getting so… brutal. They did try to kidnap Rapp, and likely Selene if they could've, so fuck 'em. Ian's heart still felt heavy, surprised at the words he'd just uttered.

When Selene's Dusk-Form Lycanroc came into view and gave a howl, Ian pumped his fist. Not too far behind were Plumeria, Selene, Rapp, and Tupp.

"Ian!" Plumeria called out, waving her arms. Ian rode Sawsbuck up triumphantly, feeling like a conquering Roman general, a smile re-appearing on his face.

"Fuck yeah bro!" Tupp yelled out, pumping his fists and fist-bumping Ian before Sawsbuck's vine let its rider down.

Selene nearly tackled him with a hug. "Thank you so much Ian," Selene said, emotion causing her voice to waver.

Rapp seemed a little unsteady, but she made it a group hug, embracing Ian and Selene. "I owe you guys…"

"I got you guys," Ian said, noticing Plumeria even giving a slight head bow and quietly mouthing thank you. "I've heard what Breon does to the people he captures," Ian continued.

"You mean he makes them sex slaves?" Selene asked. "He's the most disgusting piece of shit ever."

"Let's get moving, we need to pack up camp," Plumeria said.

"Good idea," Ian said, figuring Sawsbuck's tracks would be easy to follow.

***

Upon arrival at the campsite, Colress was outside his high-tech tent awaiting them with his Metagross resting beside him. "I was wondering where you all went!" Colress called out to greet the returning group of five.

"Breon's goons kidnapped Rapp," Plumeria said. "I wasn't sure if you were awake and we needed to leave quickly."

Colress nodded. "Well I'm glad to see everyone's safe and sound."

"We need to pack up the camp, they'll be sending more after us," Plumeria said.

Colress seemed taken aback. "I don't think that will be necessary. How many do you think they'll come at us with?"

"Fifteen, twenty trainers at least? Last time we fucked with 'em that's what they sent," Plumeria said.

Colress scoffed dismissively. "Breon is the man with the Mega-Tyranitar? Nui says he never leaves his town anymore."

"Well we can't take that risk. Plus twenty of his goons will get us all screwed," Plumeria said.

Colress shrugged. "If you insist, although our party is rather tired. I can have our tracks concealed and a Mind Barrier placed around our camp to where it will be invisible to outsiders through the night."

"What?" Plumeria asked.

Colress nodded. "Beeheeyem, demonstrate something for us," he ordered as he sent an Ultra Ball out. Out came the levitating, brown, extraterrestrial Pokemon with a large head. "Would you put a Mind Barrier around my tent?"

Beeheeyem nodded and began glowing with dark pink Type Energy. Suddenly a translucent barrier enshrouded Colress' white tent, and in moments the temporary structure disappeared from view.

"Woooooah…" Tupp said, completely shocked.

"That's a neat trick…" Plumeria said. "Does it conceal-"

"Scent as well," Colress said with a confident smile. "Apologies on my insistence for this, I have a little experiment going on in my tent I'd rather not have disrupted by my Silph Bag's conversion process."

Plumeria grimaced. "And if we get attacked?"

"Mega Metagross should be more than enough," Colress said. "But that is not the only Pokemon capable of fending off such an attack in my party."

Plumeria turned to her exhausted squad and sighed, relenting. "Okay, but we will have rotating watches, and we leave first thing in the morning."

The group gave a collective sigh of relief, and Plumeria headed back to the girls' tent.

"Beeheeyem, set a new Mind Barrier around the whole of our campsite, please and then conceal our friends' tracks," Colress instructed loudly. "Metagross, you shall be staying up to help keep watch tonight."

***

After feeding their respective teams, nightfall didn't take very long to arrive and Ian was the second watch. When he opened the tent flap, he noticed Colress already outside with the campsite decently illuminated with glowing orbs that the scientist had his Metagross set up at sunset, sitting patiently and smiling at Ian. "Good evening."

"You been up the whole time?" Ian asked.

Colress shook his head. "I set an alarm for your watch, I hope you don't mind."

"I'll take it as a compliment," Ian said, trying to play off how creepy the scientist came across. "I take it you wanted to talk about something?"

"I was actually hoping to get some training in with your Sandshrew. Being amidst the Ground Type Leylines here should bring out some of the Ground Type Energy for it to channel," Colress explained.

Ian shrugged. "I'm not against that."

Colress led Ian a little away from the camp to the border of the Mind Barrier as it was called, and Metagross' levitating orbs of light followed them. The scientist did seem rather fascinated with Ian's Sandshrew, measuring it, hitting its outer shell with a small mallet in a way the Ice-Steel Type Pokemon found ticklish. When they actually got to some training, Sandshrew seemed perturbed about not being able to use Snowscape, but once Sandshrew got the hang of Bulldoze and Dig the sadistic little bully of a Pokemon seemed pleased enough.

"And now, we try for Tyrunt," Colress said, excitement underpinning his voice.

"Tyrunt?" Ian asked.

Colress nodded. "You must break your Alpha in, show it who's boss. This is why I recommended you get this Alolan Sandshrew in the first place. Assuming you want its Alpha Eyes to activate, and the power boost that comes with it."

Ian nodded. "I'd take it not trying to eat me first."

Colress chuckled lightly. "You did choose a rather difficult Alpha to tame. Regular Tyrunts are hard to handle even for experienced dragon masters."

"So have you trained an Alpha before?" Ian asked. This might be my way to scope out the rest of his team and maybe get a glimpse of his real intentions. He did say he had something that matched Mega Metagross.

"I've been a part of the process many times," Colress explained. "And yes, I do have one of my own."

"Can I see it?" Ian asked, faux nervousness entering his voice. "If you're okay with it of course…"

Colress shrugged. "I suppose that would be okay. But for taming purposes, it's important your Tyrunt learns to respect you and your team. My Alpha Klinklang will not be able to assist." Colress then flipped an Ultra Ball into the illuminated night, and out manifested a massive metal gear monster levitating just above the sand. It was a collection of rotating gears with a red center, and one glowing red eye. The spiked gears shifted with an inhuman rigidity. Borderline ruthless. Klinklang stood a couple feet taller than Ian, but only because it hovered about a yard off the ground.

"Impressive," Ian said, mesmerized by the rotating gears.

Colress nodded. "It is, isn't it?" Colress recalled his Alpha momentarily after, and Ian readied his own Ultra Ball.

"I suppose I'll want Snowscape for this?" Ian asked.

Colress nodded. "Indeed you will."

Once Sandshrew had Snowscape and a Defense Curl under its belt, Ian released his voracious tyrannosaur. It appeared with a seething growl and a forceful snap of its jaws, fixating on Ian for a moment before Sandshrew's squeaking laughter diverted its murderous attention. Tyrunt growled angrily, and Sandshrew squeaked even louder, pointing directly at Tyrunt, enraging the tyrannosaur even more. Tyrunt charged at the teasing bully, and Colress cleared his throat. "Order some attacks."

"Ice Shard," Ian ordered, hoping to not be too loud as to wake up his sleeping squad members, even though they were a decent bit away. Sandshrew fired off a chunk of ice at Tyrunt, striking it in the head, only further enraging it. "Now, Metal Claw," Ian commanded. Tyrunt charged, but Sandshrew skated across the Snowscape with ease and it quickly struck Tyrunt with a claw engulfed in silver light.

This cycle continued on for quite some time, Tyrunt would charge or send attacks Sandshrew's way, while Sandshrew would tank the attack or cleverly maneuver around on the Snowscape and pummel the baby tyrannosaur with attacks. Finally when Tyrunt seemed ready to collapse, Colress gave a light clap of approval. "Very well done Ian, Sandshrew."

Ian gave a thumbs up and recalled his battered Tyrunt. Sorry girl. Unfortunately for you, these beatings will continue until your attitude improves. Ian knelt down and put his hand up to give his icy rodent a high five. Alolan Sandshrew slid over with euphoric squeaks and smacked Ian's hand with its icy claw, but Sandshrew panicked when Ian recoiled from the surprise. "No worries Sandshrew, you had a tough little thing there." Sandshrew gave a joyous squeak in response, and Ian recalled it, giving it a gracious nod.

"You know Ian, you had a spectator," Colress said lowly.

"What?" Ian said, looking to Colress nervously before looking to the camp. There didn't appear to be anyone out and about, and then Colress cleared his throat and pointed to the sandy wasteland, where a figure floated above the sand, barely illuminated with Metagross' orbs. Only a couple dozen feet away hovered a dark-bodied Pokemon with a large, gaudy red headpiece that Ian instantly recognized as the Island Guardian. "Tapu Bulu-" Ian said in alarm as he immediately prostrated himself in front of the Tapu, to which Colress subtly scoffed at.

Tapu Bulu gave a low, rumbling growl, and Ian looked up to see Tapu Bulu moving a little closer. The being then pointed at the sand, and Ian wasn't quite sure what it meant.

"Does it want to battle?" Colress asked.

Ian tensed. "I sure hope not…"

Tapu Bulu then growled once more, pointing at the ground insistently. Its hand then glowed the multicolor pattern he recognized as the power that Deerling was blessed with the last time Ian had crossed paths with the Tapu.

"What is that?" Colress asked.

"It wants Sawsbuck out," Ian said, fear dripping into his voice. He grabbed Sawsbuck's pink Heal Ball and tossed it in ahead of him. Sawsbuck appeared, slumped over with exhaustion. Tapu Bulu gave a louder, angrier call. Ian lowered his head reverently once more. "Tapu Bulu, Sawsbuck is tired from great exertion today. The blessing you gave us has helped us save our friends and comrades in ways we never could have imagined. We should still be in this desert tomorrow night, if you are willing to wait to battle us then."

Tapu Bulu grunted abruptly and turned around, speeding off into the night.

Ian sighed. "I think I just pissed it off…"

Colress shook his head. "A little. But the fact it came to you like it did means Tapu Bulu recognizes the same thing I see in you, young Ian…" Colress paused dramatically. "...potential."

Ian got up from his prostrated position and recalled his exhausted Sawsbuck. "I appreciate the kind words, Colress. I already feel better about my Pokemon's progress with just a couple days of hanging out with you."

Colress laughed lowly, mischievously. "Your Pokemon respond very well to you, incredibly so for someone who has only been their trainer for less than a month. It's not every day I see a trainer who can bring out their Pokemon's true potential like you can, Ian."

Oh this is a recruitment pitch.

"When you have a gift like yours, I've always felt it must be shared with the world. The advice you have received from Team Skull, while impressive for the situation, is nowhere near what guidance and resources I can offer you in Malie City and civilization at large."

"Really…" Ian began, processing the implications of what Colress had just disclosed. "Pardon me for asking, but how do you know you'll have resources in Malie City?"

"Besides the ones I have now?" Colress asked with a suspicious snicker. "A perceptive question, but it would not surprise me if I am able to make fast friends here in this Alola. We could even get you off the island if need be, although I'm not sure how Tapu Bulu would take it."

"Yeah…" Ian realized as he heard footsteps heading their way. Ian turned, seeing Plumeria walking towards them.

"Your shift is over, get some sleep you two," Plumeria ordered coldly. As Ian followed Colress, Plumeria then called for him once more, this time more softly.

"Yeah?" Ian asked.

"A quick word?" Plumeria asked, her tone much warmer.

Ian trudged back to Plumeria. "What's wrong?" Ian croaked.

"Nothing's wrong," Plumeria said, putting her hand on Ian's shoulder. "I just wanted to give you a real thank you for rescuing Rapp today. You're really living up to rule number one of Team Skull."

Ian nodded tensely. "Of course. Grimsley's told me about what Breon does to people."

"Well I wanted to make sure you felt recognized for it," Plumeria said, her normally scowling face daring a light smile.

"Thanks," Ian said curtly and turned left, seeing Colress had been waiting for him.

Once out of earshot of Plumeria, Colress opened his mouth. "It appears Beeheeyem's Mind Barrier does not work on Island Guardians," Colress observed, a hint of amusement in his voice.

Chapter 22 At the Threshold

Plumeria had the group up and ready to go just after the crack of down, with Tyrunt's feeding session going as smoothly as it ever had, with the baby tyrannosaur being more focused on attacking its unlikely bully: Sandshrew. They kept a brisk pace across the desert, with someone eyeing their southern flank at all times to make sure Breon's goons weren't getting any more bad ideas. While Mandibuzz and Vullaby regularly patrolled the skies above, Ian often caught Plumeria staring at him during the journey, sometimes scowling and other times looking on, looking resigned but paradoxically hopeful. Multiple sides raged a silent war in Ian's mind, with Irida's hauntingly tender voice and elegant beauty on one side, while Colress and the potential promise of incredible, untapped power awaited for him if he was willing. Then his heart would tense as he remembered the people of Po Town he'd be leaving, with echoes of Rylee's curious voice asking "why are Pokemon here?" on the other side.

This silent tug of war lasted late into the afternoon as they got closer to the Pele Hills and where the third biggest mountain on Ula'Ula Island resided, what Ian figured was the equivalent to the Mudsdale area in the games. Much smaller than the two bigger mountains on the island, the still volcanically active Blush Mountain loomed to the southwest. After reaching the foot of an incline that apparently led out of the desert, Plumeria finally broke her silence. "Let's set up camp here tonight. The ranch should be about a day from here if we can make good time."

A tense feeling nagged at Ian's chest as it hit home just how close they were. I'm going to have to make a decision soon. Ian looked at Colress, the scientist still shrouded in mystery. Every time I think I'm making a breakthrough with him he does something really suspicious. But he's been incredibly helpful for me, and Tyrunt might slowly be coming around. Ian then turned his attention to Plumeria and felt a sense of dread come over him. Getting away from her means I can basically reset the secret, and I can actually get my story straight so some chick with a stick up her ass won't sniff me out in the future.

Colress' creepy, gleeful voice interrupted Ian's thoughts. "Will you be taking the first watch tonight?"

Ian shrugged. "Not up to me…"

"I was hoping to see if our spectator called upon us again," Colress said.

Ian gulped. If Tapu Bulu really wanted a battle with Sawsbuck, that has to be terrifying. Maybe it's a test? Do we have to win? "We'll keep an eye out for it."

"Oh, it's we now? You two gonna start sharing a tent soon?" Plumeria asked sourly, butting her way into the conversation.

"My tent does have rather luxurious accommodations, all things considered," Colress bragged.

Ian smirked, ignoring Colress. "Jealous much?"

"I'd hate to be the one to tell Mina you left her for a scientist," Plumeria said.

Ian rolled his eyes. "Very funny."

Plumeria then turned her attention to Colress, folding her arms. "And I'd appreciate it if you didn't distract my watchman from his duties," Plumeria explained. That Mind Barrier thing of yours is a neat trick, but we need to be on guard. Breon's men have had a day to rally more forces."

"No distraction? I suppose I could agree to that," Colress said.

"I was more thinking you'd just stay in your tent all night this time around," Plumeria explained.

"And if I don't agree?" Colress asked, a knowing, vile smirk on his lips.

Plumeria tensed, but remained silent as she realized how hopeless the game of chicken was.

"Need I remind you Plumeria, not only are we close enough to civilization I should be able to find my way well enough, but I have paid you far more than necessary to travel with your group. Attempting to constrain my movements within the camp is a touch too far, I reckon," Colress explained.

Plumeria's scowl deepened and she turned around defiantly. "Fine then, have your little bro-time."

Colress chuckled lowly so Plumeria wouldn't hear, and he began to open his mouth but paused as Rapp came closer to Ian and Colress.

"Yo Ian, you've been kinda quiet all day. You mad at me or something?" Rapp asked.

"Not at all," Ian said, confused.

"Okay good," Rapp said. "Part of me was thinking maybe you were gettin' kinda pissy at me for not bein' like, all over you after you saved me…"

Ian shook his head. "I definitely wasn't thinking that. I've just had a lot on my mind…"

"Cool. Cuz like, I ain't no damsel in distress yo," Rapp clarified. "Thanks for rescuing me and all that, but I wanted to make sure you didn't think I was about to start crushin' on you or something."

Ian chuckled. "Rapp, that is last thing I'd think of you as."

Rapp nodded, a big grin crossing her face. "Cool, cool, just wanted to be sure. You best believe when I get some rich guy comin' my way, you'll see me get all… y'know…" Then Rapp's grin got mischievous. "But I'll make sure Mina hears all about it, loverboy."

Ian shrugged. "I'm not even sure that'll be necessary…"

"Oh, you're that confident you got her in the bag?" Rapp asked.

He paused, realizing Rapp likely had no idea of the thoughts he was entertaining. "Yeah…" Ian lied.

***

Ian stayed up past his regular watch shift with Colress observing from nearby, but Tapu Bulu proved to be a no show. Did I piss off Tapu Bulu then? Did it just not approve of what I was doing with Tyrunt last night? Does that mean I should just leave the island then? Ian shook the doubts from his mind for the time being as he trudged back to this tent to awaken Tupp for his watch shift.

The next morning came with a tense quiet over Ian as the time to make his decision loomed closer. By the end of the day we should be at Palmer's Ranch… He pictured a bright new tomorrow in his mind, imagining what the Pokemon world was like with civilization instead of whatever it was he'd been subjected to in Po Town. Sawsbuck ought to get me picked up by some lab or study group, and the farmers will want us around, it'd be a pretty easy way of getting money I reckon. Not to mention whatever connections this Faller Colress ends up making. Ian's stomach churned, part with guilt and part with unease about this Colress' real intentions. Everyone's saying he's giving off bad vibes, which he is, but I can only imagine how much stronger I'll get with him helping me train my Pokemon. Plus if he's from beyond the Ultra Rift, he may know a way to close it. Then he grimaced as he remembered all of the fast friends and memories he'd be leaving behind. The celebration with Tupp yesterday after catching Vibrava came to the forefront of his mind, followed by Rapp showing off her Galarian Ponyta to the children at Auntie Pula's school. Rylee, she's so little and in such a weird world and is going to go through everything I'm going through now… Plus what happens to Po Town when the food runs out? Ian felt a pain in his heart as tensed up.

"Ian, we're done packing up," Plumeria said, breaking Ian's train of thought.

"Yeah, sorry…" Ian said, seeing the other four Team Skull squad members eyeing him curiously.

Not even a half hour after leaving camp, Colress cleared his throat loudly and covered his mouth. "We have company," the scientist warned.

The whole group turned southwest to Haina Town, but Ian noticed the movement in his vision wasn't from the desert, but coming down a slope from the Pele Hills, six figures riding Mudsdale descended one after the other, with the leading Mudsdale noticeably larger than the others with prominent red eyes. Alpha Mudsdale.

Ian noticed Colress holding a ball in his hand at the ready, but he didn't recognize the bright red ball with two black bands around the middle. I feel like I recognize that from somewhere…

"Stand down everyone," Plumeria ordered loudly. "It's the Rough Raiders, their leader Ted's the guy with the Alpha Mudsdale." Colress grunted before putting the mysterious red ball back into his lab coat.

The six Mudsdale and their riders slowed their gallop as they got closer, clouds of dust trailing them as they did. When the Alpha Mudsdale and its rider came to a stop, the rest of the group's Mudsdale got alongside them, not daring to pass the leaders.

"Greetings, Team Skull!" The man from atop the Alpha Mudsdale called out. The man had an older, weathered face like a man in his fifties and a thick moustache with spectacles visible from Ian's vantage point. He wore a brown cowboy hat and a matching brown vest with a black undershirt. Ian noticed his legs were covered in blue jeans. Next to him was what looked to be an Alolan native in similar cowboy garb on his own, much smaller Mudsdale, and next to him was a young woman with bright pink hair, with a green shirt and brown vest on Ian recognized as Neroli of the Driftwood Guild. What's she doing here?

"Good morning Mr. Beaumont," Plumeria called back.

"Good morning Miss Plumeria. I didn't expect to see one Team Skull member on this side of the desert, let alone five," Ted replied. "Not even mentioning your. famous companion. It is a surprise to see you out here Dr. Colress, but a welcome one."

Colress turned to Plumeria and spoke quietly. "Is it okay if I address him?"

"Yeah," Plumeria said. "His name's Ted Beaumont."

"Greetings sir," Colress said with an awkward wave of his hand. "I am not the Colress you know, but I feel he and I are quite similar to one another. I am a Faller, and arrived in this world a few days ago."

"I see," Ted said. "Well allow me to formally introduce ourselves then. We are the Rough Raiders, protectors of the Pele Hills and its people. I am Teddy Beaumont, these are my compatriots…" Teddy then indicated to his direct right. "This is Chuck Gruden, one of our lieutenants, next to him is Markus Davies, and on the far side is Garrett Kerr. To my left is one Zack Tatum, and a Driftwood Guild member you're likely familiar with, Neroli Neimaka."

Ian noticed the three on Ted's right looked a bit different to Ted and Zack. Those three had black shirts with silver vests and bandannas, making them look more like members of a biker gang than cowboys.

"We do know Neroli," Plumeria said, a hint of coldness in her voice before pointing her finger at herself and the subsequent Team Skull members. "I'm Plumeria Hemlock, this is Rapp Stocke, Selene Tsukino, Tupp Porter, and Ian Cougar."

"Good then!" Ted called out. "Now that we're more well acquainted, may we dismount and approach?"

"Sure!" Plumeria called back, her tone not matching the annoyed look in her eye.

The five Rough Raiders got off their mounts without a hitch, while the rider next to Neroli offered his hand to assist her getting off smoothly. A large, swooping bird came flying down behind the Rough Raiders and landed. Ian recognized the vulture-like Pokemon to be a Mandibuzz, although it seemed a bit skinnier than he'd remembered seeing in the games. As the four Rough Raiders and Neroli approached, the man reached for some gadget around the vulture Pokemon's neck before taking hold of it and recalling the large bird Pokemon in a Poke Ball and catching up to his companions.

"So Plumeria, what brings a Team Skull squad so far away from Po Town?" Ted asked with a polite curiosity.

Plumeria eyed Neroli suspiciously. "I'd prefer to not disclose that information in front of a Driftwood Guild member."

"I've seen the work on the crop fields outside the walls of Po Town, and we had a guild member stop by Makamae Town yesterday," Neroli said. "So we know you're getting seeds, and the Rough Raiders here just want to know where from."

Plumeria scowled. "Palmer's Ranch."

"Perfect!" Ted called out enthusiastically. "Good old Craig Palmer has been a sort of go-between for us, being so near the defensive line of Malie City. A go-between usually involving things the Driftwood Guild has a hard time acquiring. Unfortunately, after our raids on aid caravans to Haina Town and that bastard Breon, the ASF has disbarred Craig from doing business directly with us. The only reason the ASF hasn't hunted us down yet is we control the Blush Mountain Geothermal Power Plant and have kept power flowing that way."

"So we'd be buying stuff for you?" Plumeria asked. "I'm not against the idea, but we need all of the valuables we have for our own purposes. While we'd like to buy for you, I'm afraid we can't spare what we have."

"We could give you our valuables and you make the purchase for us," Ted offered. One of the biker-looking guys grunted with irritation, but did not protest the offer.

"That could be possible," Plumeria said carefully.

"We would have two conditions though," Ted began. "One: you will ride with us through the Pele Hills until reaching the border. It is a shorter route with the extra Mudsdale we've brought for you, and will save you quite a bit of walking. And second, one of your squad members will stay with us until your return." Ted's eyes shifted to Ian if only for a moment.

Plumeria's scowl tightened. "A reasonable request, but I don't like having one of our members basically be your hostage."

"He wouldn't be a hostage," Ted said with a smile, stealing another quick glance at Ian.

Plumeria rolled her eyes. "I appreciate the offer, but no deal." Plumeria exhaled abruptly and turned to her group. "C'mon guys, let's get moving." Plumeria turned around and motioned for the rest of the group of five to follow.

"Okay fine," Ted called back. "No hostage. We will go completely on trust."

Plumeria stopped, scowling once more. Now it feels like we're about to get robbed. "Can I get a minute to think on it?" Plumeria asked.

"Of course," Teddy said, motioning his fellow Rough Raiders to back away.

"Hey Ian," Neroli said lowly with a grin, motioning him to come over to her.

"Hey Neroli," Ian said, taking a step to her.

"Ian Cougar!" Plumeria barked. "Strategy meeting, get over here. Selene you too."

"Big Sis, how come I can't join?" Tupp asked.

"When you can pronounce 'strategy' correctly I'll consider it," Plumeria retorted.

Tupp punched the air with frustration, slumping his shoulders in defeat.

Plumeria brought Ian and Selene in close. "This is kind of suspicious, but it would be free security if they're not actually trying to rob us."

Selene shook her head. "They're so gonna rob us. Those two guys, Marcus Davies and Chuck Gruden? They were on wanted posters in Malie City when I was still doing my Island Challenge."

Plumeria grimaced before turning to Ian. "You think us and Colress could fight these guys if they attacked us?"

"Well…" Ian went silent as his mind raced with possibilities. Colress did have a ball ready to use against them when they pulled up, and it wasn't Metagross' ball- Ian gasped as a revelation hit him. That red ball he had earlier was a Cherish Ball, which is what Mythic Pokemon from events would be handed out in the games with! "You know… I think Colress might be able to pull it off. He mentioned having something other than Metagross that could fight off a large group, remember?"

Plumeria nodded. "Yeah…" Plumeria then paused. "But why would they be so willing to give us their money basically without a hostage?"

"Maybe they're that desperate for whatever they need from Palmer…" Selene wondered aloud.

Ian thought on it for a bit, trying to consider things from their angle. "They're hostile to Breon, right?"

Plumeria nodded. "Still technically at war with him, but it's low-key right now."

"This might be a stretch, but it might be a test to see if we're reliable. Reliable enough to be allies if things with Breon heat up again," Ian said. "If we can hold their money with no collateral and buy them necessary supplies, I bet they'll offer an alliance not long after."

"You sure?" Selene asked.

Plumeria nodded. "That makes a lot of sense, Ian. Good insight."

Ian nodded, and Plumeria withdrew her arms from around his and Selene's shoulders. "We'll do it!"

"Very well then!" Ted responded with vigorous enthusiasm. "Let's get everyone set up…" Ted said, beckoning Plumeria over.

Ian looked on for a bit before Neroli and the more cowboy-looking Rough Raider approached him. "So Ian, I couldn't believe it when the Raiders said they spotted a guy with a powerful Sawsbuck running around the desert."

Ian shrugged. "Really?" He asked with a nervous smile.

"Grimsley's given me multiple reports on your training progress the past few days," Neroli said, a hint of frustration in her voice. "So if you've been here, has Grimsley just been Mantine surfing since you left?"

Ian laughed nervously. "Uh… no idea… Plumeria didn't want you guys to know we were heading over to Palmer's Ranch, so Grimsley kept the lie up because I asked him." Maybe they'll buy my jumping on the sword here. I owe him after all he's helped me with.

Neroli grunted, but relented. "It would be so much easier if Plumeria gave us just a little bit of trust."

Ian grimaced. "I know you guys are basically forcing Grimsley to help me, but she says you guys are buddy-buddy with Surge and one of his goons almost killed me on my fourth day on the island, so I understand her dislike of you guys."

Neroli rolled her eyes. "Look, we hold no oaths above the island, and we really mean it. I can't get into our business with Surge other than I can say he's doing quite a bit for us as well."

Ian grimaced. "Fine then. On the subject of Surge, is he the real Surge? Like the gym leader from Kanto but over here with a Zapdos for some reason?"

Neroli shook her head. "I really should charge you for this, but no. Lieutenant Surge is the active gym leader in Kanto even now, so this copycat must be a Faller from an Ultra Storm. The only gym leader who's on leave from Kanto is Erika, at least I'm pretty sure…"

"Good. Things seem even weirder now," Ian said with a chuckle.

The man Ian remembered as Tatum, who'd been silently with Neroli finally opened his mouth having found his opening. "So you're Ian Cougar, the Sawsbuck-guy, right?"

"Uh…"

"Ian, they have video footage of you fighting Breon's goons," Neroli said.

Tatum gave Neroli a sour look. "I thought you were neutral! You're not even being subtle-"

"I don't want him thinking I spilled all of the beans about him, sir," Neroli fired back with a flirtatious smile before turning to Ian. "Because I didn't. I just verified a few things."

"Video footage?" Ian asked. "Oh wait, that thing on your Mandibuzz earlier."

Tatum shrugged. "Okay, I'm not the best at being subtle either. But dude, I saw you go one versus two trying to save that pink-haired girl, that was amazing," Tatum said. "I showed Teddy and Al the footage and they were really impressed."

Don't tell me these guys want to recruit me too. "Well, Sawsbuck did all of the hard work," Ian said with a smile. "And who's Al?"

"Alton 'Silver Eyes' Davies," Neroli said with a giggle.

Tatum shrugged. "Used to be a sort of gangster on the island, but joined up with Teddy when Breon mutinied and Blush Beach took in refugees from the town. Him and Teddy are like co-commanders of this whole thing now."

"It explains the different attire," Neroli said, pointing at the biker guys.

"Makes sense…" Ian said.

Neroli leaned in close to Ian. "Don't say anything bad about Al around those dudes. Marcus, the younger one is Al's son."

"Gotcha…" Ian said.

"Ian!" Plumeria barked. "Stop flirting and get ready for your Mudsdale."

Ian turned around to see the other five members of the squad had mounted up on Mudsdales, saddles and all.

"He doesn't need a Mudsdale does he? I saw the footage of him riding that Sawsbuck quite adeptly," Ted chimed in.

Plumeria froze with shock. Ian mouthed "eyes in the sky" and pointed up, to which she gave a defeated groan.

"I'd still prefer he not have to ride Sawsbuck," Plumeria said. She doesn't want the blessing to get found out.

Ted guffawed loudly. "I understand your want for keeping that blessed Pokemon under wraps, but we already know. Besides, young Ian shouldn't be restrained to such a degree. After all, he is the top candidate to be the island's next Kahuna."

Ian froze as the words hit his ears, and his mind began racing. What does he mean "top candidate to be the next Kahuna?" Is he serious? When Ian started to process external actions, he realized every member of Team Skull had gone into a similar state of shock.

"Well, isn't that obvious?" Colress asked aloud with his signature, creepy chuckle.

"I think I'm gonna just go, I've gotta yell at Grimsley anyways…" Neroli said, sliding off her Mudsdale and letting out her Elgyem.

Plumeria was the first to regain composure and initially she glared daggers at Neroli until she and Elgyem disappeared with a Teleport. She tried to keep her scowl to a minimum and turned to Ted. "Well maybe I was trying to put some humility into my new recruit here. He's only been with us for three weeks."

"Three weeks and he's the only one that can chase down a teammate kidnapped by Breon's goons? Humility ain't what you're looking for," Tatum said, an accusation on his lips.

Plumeria growled in frustration, her eyes straining with anger but her mouth shut. We're too deep in to turn back now, she realizes it too. Plumeria took the reins of her Mudsdale and approached Ian, clearly unhappy but trying to sound accommodating. "You can do whatever you want."

Ian immediately reached for Sawsbuck's Heal Ball and released it, with its vines quickly aiding him on getting on his once again spring form blessed stag's back. Plumeria gave an exhausted exhale, but said nothing in response as Sawsbuck and Ian made their way to Tupp and his Mudsdale.

"Ay yo, is Tapu Bulu really gonna make you the next Kahuna?" Tupp whispered.

Ian shrugged and began to whisper as well. "It didn't exactly tell me anything when it decided to not murder me. That's not exactly a ringing endorsement."

"Are we all ready to ride?" Ted called out loudly.

"Finally!" One of the biker-looking guys called back.

***

The group of eleven riders made their way up and down the various slopes of the brown colored Pele Hills as the sun beat down on them with there being no interference from the cloud cover. The land was mostly barren of plant life thanks to the arid climate, as Ted explained. Ian and Tupp picked up the rear of the party with Tatum, partly because Tupp's Mudsdale was a bit slow and also so Ian didn't have to deal with Plumeria looking over his way every thirty seconds. Ted had apparently acknowledged Plumeria's sensitivity about Ian and kept mostly quiet for the duration of the current trek. Whenever Sawsbuck passed any bit of vegetation, whether alive or dead, their Rough Raider escorts would watch with quiet fascination as the plants would surge with life from Sawsbuck's Grassy Surge ability. In their defense, it is tough to get used to in the beginning.

It had been a couple hours since they'd begun their Mudsdale ride through the Pele Hills of Ula'Ula Island when Ted pointed at Blush Mountain in the near distance. "That's where the crater for the longest ongoing eruption on the entire planet is," he announced before pointing to the top of the slope just up ahead. "That vantage point will even catch the caldera's glow at night," Ted continued before his Alpha Mudsdale slowed, ending up coincidentally next to Ian as Tatum's Mudsdale had silently moved from its initial position. "Young Mr. Cougar, I've seen that Sawsbuck in action, but how is it with inclines?"

Ian shrugged. "Not entirely sure, we don't practice on a lot of inclines."

"Care for a little race against my Mudsdale?" Ted asked lowly with an exuberant smile on his slightly wrinkled face. Ted's Mudsdale, which towered over Sawsbuck and the other Mudsdale, turned its head, focusing its bright red Alpha Eyes on Ian and Sawsbuck and snorted dismissively.

Sawsbuck gave a defiant bleat and shook its body a little, as if loosening up for the challenge. "You want it, Sawsbuck?" Sawsbuck nodded its head, with its cherry blossom adorned antlers swaying momentarily.

"Good to hear, let's get out wide," Ted said, signalling Ian to go around the bulk of the party. Once Sawsbuck got Ian in front of the three biker-looking Rough Raiders and lined back up next to Ted and his Alpha, Ted put his hand in the air. "On three. One, two, three!"

Sawsbuck and Mudsdale both gave fierce cries as they sprang into action. Mudsdale's massive form caused the hoofbeats thudded against the ground like tiny thunderclaps, while Sawsbuck daintier form bolted like a newly unrestrained spring, taking a quick early lead on the flatland.

Ian heard Plumeria curse somewhere in the barrage of sound, only for Ian to turn around and see Ted and his Alpha Mudsdale plodding along with a fury. A thing that big has gotta be building up momentum. "Good stuff so far Sawsbuck, but it's just getting started!" Ian called as Sawsbuck landed on the first bit of the incline, his blessed stag's rhythm disrupted immediately, causing Ian to be pushed forward, the bizarrely sturdy vines around his legs being the only thing keeping him mounted.

Sawsbuck needed a few strides to find its rhythm up the incline, but did so, albeit much slower than before. Ian realized the slope had to be almost two hundred feet, and they weren't even a third of the way up when Mudsdale's thunderous gallop hit the incline without disruption. Well shit.

Sawsbuck seemed to sense the oncoming titan of a horse, and gave a spirited battle cry as it upped its pace. When Sawsbuck passed the halfway point, Ian could tell Mudsdale had only continued to gain at an alarming rate. Upon getting to the three quarter point of the brown hill, Ted and his Alpha Musdale pulled up alongside Ian and his tiring Sawsbuck.

"Apologies young man," Ted said with a proud grin on his face before facing forward again and putting both of his hands on the saddle's protrusion. "Gotta hold on tight for this one," Ted said light-heartedly before abruptly changing into a booming, commanding tone. "Mudsdale, High Horsepower!"

Alpha Mudsdale suddenly glowed with light brown Ground Type Energy and in an instant burst forward, sending a shockwave that nearly knocked Sawsbuck and Ian over. Mudsdale's massive form moved so quickly Ian couldn't even see its legs, just a cloud of dust and Type Energy following the titanic steed as it seemingly bulldozed its way to the top of the slope.

When Sawsbuck's stride got back in rhythm, Ian gave his blessed stag an affectionate scratch on the back of its neck. "No need to tire yourself, it's over, bud." Sawsbuck slowed, breathing heavily as it got into a trot. When Sawsbuck did meet the triumphant Ted and Alpha Mudsdale at the top of the hill, Ted greeted him warmly.

"A very fine effort, young man, Sawsbuck," Ted said. "I suppose you haven't tried using moves while on Sawsbuck's back?"

Ian shook his head. "Considering it's been only a couple weeks since we started riding together, that hasn't really crossed my mind, other than Leech Seed."

"Fair," Ted said. "But one must continuously push themselves in order to improve. I can tell Team Skull appears just happy to have you around, and your growth may soon stagnate."

"Well-"

"Neroli has spoken to me about Driftwood hiring Grimsley to help train you," Ted interrupted. "But you and Grimsley being with us, here would be far better for your development, if you truly intend on becoming the Kahuna of this island."

Sawsbuck shifted uneasily, sensing Ian's discomfort from Ted's words. "I'm really not sure I want that, and there's no guarantee that's what's going on."

Ted shook his head, fixating his intense gaze on Ian. "The Driftwood Guild claims they hold no oaths above the island. They always exact a price, and are choosy with who they share intelligence with, yet they clear the marker of a top trainer just so he can train you?"

"They may be trying to make me feel like I owe them long term," Ian said.

Ted shook his head. "Neroli said little about the Guild's plans for you other than wanting you with us long term. But I'm no fool, they're grooming you to be the next Kahuna, and are trying to make sure you're worthy of that title."

Oh shit, he's right. "I… don't think that's the best idea, I've only been here three weeks-"

"Another time," Ted said with a grunt as Ian heard the hoofbeats of multiple Mudsdale reaching the top of their vantage point. "Yes young Mr. Cougar, it is a magnificent view from up here."

Plumeria's Mudsdale approached him, and she gave him a hauntingly sympathetic look as she passed by. Whatever.

***

Plumeria stayed close to Ian the rest of the way, which only ended up being an hour or so at the top of a small hill overlooking green flatlands, and a few miles in the distance sat a large agricultural estate with crops and a huge cattle pasture. Sure looks like a ranch to me.
When it came time to dismount, Ted took Plumeria aside and handed her a folder from his own Silph Bag, and Ian watched as Ted began manifesting golden Nuggets into his hands.

"Lunch time?" Colress asked the group of Team Skull members.

"Yes please," Selene said thankfully.

Colress distributed the protein bars, leaving the last couple for Ian. The mysterious scientist got shoulder to shoulder with Ian and began to whisper. "Last contact as the woman will be watching me," Colress whispered. "Sometime in the middle of the night, head close to the checkpoint, Nui told me of a camp. I'll meet you a couple hours later and we can go to Malie City together, where you can finally leave this nonsense behind."

Ian eyed Colress apprehensively, not wanting to give an answer.

"Think on it," Colress whispered before stepping over to Plumeria, offering her a couple protein bars as well. Once the business was settled, Ted came over to Ian, his piercing blue eyes locked in on Ian's.

"Stay safe young Mr. Cougar," Ted began. "If you do encounter any ASF members, I would not suggest showing Sawsbuck unless absolutely necessary." Great, now I've got another person bullying me into not showing Sawsbuck to other factions. Ian nodded agreeingly and shook the older man's hand firmly before following the rest of the Team Skull members down the slope.

Plumeria stayed close to Ian for the entirety of the hourlong walk or so, with Colress choosing to walk on the party's periphery, scanning things with his omnitron but keeping to himself. When they came to a well kept up, paved road, a pit formed with Ian's stomach. We must be really close to Malie City if this is the case. When the group of six got to the outskirts of the ranch, Plumeria ordered them to halt.

"Is the Stoutland still at the gate?" Selene asked aloud. "It used to be the guard for this side of the ranch. Other side's a Liepard."

"You passed by here on your Island Challenge?" Plumeria asked.

Selene nodded with a smile. "Yup! Mr. Palmer's really nice."

Plumeria grimaced. "I assume he won't be as welcoming as he used to be. But it's probably best to send you and Colress in first to let them know how many of us there are and that we only want to stay one night to make the transaction."

"A prudent plan," Colress said with a nod. "Which in that case means, it's time I paid up!" Colress said with an overly nice smile before taking his high tech Silph Bag off of his back and scrolling through the top little screen. He already gave Plumeria a Comet Shard last time. Colress manifested a Big Nugget in his hands and handed it to Plumeria with a smile.

Plumeria's hand that wasn't holding the Big Nugget covered her mouth in disbelief. "My goodness… Um… Thank you, Colress. This all will be put to good use," she promised.

"Glad to hear. If I ever do come to call upon you, just remember, there's more where that came from," Colress said, stealing a subtle glance at Ian before putting his Silph Bag back on. He turned to Selene and extended his hand invitingly to Selene. "Shall we?"

Selene giggled nervously, rejecting the offer. "Sure…"

***

After a short talk with Craig, a man no older than thirty-five with a grizzled beard and long brown hair at the ranch entrance, the five Team Skull members and Colress were allowed to set up camp next to the barn on the eastern side of the ranch. Colress had decided to stick around to "rest his tired legs" or something, so his tent wasn't too far off from their own. Ian did get a good look at the actual cattle, which seemed like very slight, non-special versions of Miltank and Tauros that were at the halfway mark between the Pokemon and general cows from Earth. "Domesticated version, almost no powers," Plumeria explained.

After getting settled with their tents, Ian had training sessions with his team sans Sawsbuck and Tyrunt, and fed his team members behind the barn where no one could see. Partly to keep Sawsbuck hidden but also so they don't see how out of control Tyrunt is. As the sun started to set, Ian found his way to a little gazebo a few dozen feet from their residential barn. During the sunset, he remembered the sunset from two days prior, where Ingo gave him Cogita's words of wisdom. Purpose and peace…

Tupp eventually joined Ian in the gazebo and started chattering away about the day's events when Ian heard footsteps coming up behind them. "Tupp, Ian," Plumeria spoke with a softer voice than normal.

"Hey Big Sis," Tupp acknowledged.

"Need to kick you out Tupp. Gotta talk with Ian," Plumeria said softly.

"Uh… okay…" Tupp said. "Yo Ian, make sure not to be too loud, Imma go watch the sunset with Selene," Tupp wiggled his eyebrows suggestively.

"Good luck bro," Ian said, offering a fist bump. As Tupp fist bumped back, he gave him a look that seemed to say the same words.

When Tupp's footsteps had faded into the distance, Ian cleared his throat. "So what'd you want to talk about?"

Plumeria sighed. "Nice positioning of your chair," Plumeria said.

"What?" Ian asked.

"Malie City's gonna light up the sky in the direction you're looking," Plumeria said, pointing to the northeastern horizon. "Thinking of going there while we're asleep?"

Ian tensed. "Uh… no…" He lied.

Plumeria sighed. "There's no point in lying Ian. You'd be dumb to not even be considering it at least."

Ian shrugged. "Fair… With that considered, I'm curious as to why we're staying the night here."

"Because I only gave him half the treasure of the order. It's such a big order he called in the agriculture supply store he ordered from and is going to need to bring some ASF people along. I'll give him the rest once he has the goods. Plus if we can stay the night on his property without incident, it'll establish a good working relationship for when we need to come back."

Ian nodded.

"And us being able to come back does rely on a certain someone and their blessed stag sticking around Po Town," Plumeria mentioned.

Here it is, the impassioned speech to get me to stay. "It's mostly just Sawsbuck you need, not me."

Plumeria shook her head. "Deerling doesn't evolve into Sawsbuck without you caring for it, and for it to be so attached to you that it pleaded for your life to Tapu Bulu while its leg had been snapped."

"I guess you're right…"

Plumeria smirked. "You know, you've only been with us for three weeks, but already, so many things have changed around Po Town. I don't think anyone's had quite the effect you've had on this town, not for a long time."

"Being the main source of the food supply does help with that," Ian rationalized.

"Yeah…" Plumeria said, going deep into thought. "But Tupp is happier, and even though Hyde hates your guts, he's taken more of a leadership role in Team Skull when he's not with the squad. Selene's even been upping her training regimens, seeing this meteoric rise of yours."

"You're gonna flatter me into being loyal forever?" Ian teased.

"Can't blame me for trying, right?" Plumeria said with a smile in her voice before pausing once more. "And you've done something no one's done for me since all this nonsense began."

"Really?" Ian asked skeptically.

Plumeria nodded. "Well, don't go telling anyone this, I don't want everyone to think I'm going soft…"

"Now I'm really curious," Ian said with a laugh.

"Shut up," Plumeria said playfully. "But, that day we were coming back from that convoy mission where Surge showed up and we were talking in that little thicket on the roadside?"

"Yeah…"

"Well, you said something like 'I see why everyone calls you Big Sis,' and then you said 'sounds pretty demanding.'" Plumeria paused, looking up to the gazebo's ceiling for more than a few moments. She doesn't want to show she's getting emotional… "And that was the first time since Team Skull got established that someone acknowledged… well, me, and how hard being everyone's 'Big Sis' is."

Ian nodded. "Well, the first time I stopped by the school when I was on suspension, Auntie Pula said you're the glue that holds all of Po Town together."

Plumeria tensed her facial expression. "She'd never say that to my face."

"In her defense, you are pretty intimidating," Ian said. "Probably because you hide that soft side so well."

"Ian…" Plumeria said, almost tenderly. "...you're a lot smarter than I give you credit for."

"I assume I'm never allowed to share that piece of information with anyone ever?" He teased.

Plumeria giggled softly. "I'll boil you in acid if you do…" Plumeria then took a deep breath, sighing as she exhaled. "But I've had these walls around me for quite some time. I think they're the only things that keep me going, keep me able to be everyone's Big Sis…" Plumeria seemed to pause as she reflected on something. "To be honest, I think having those walls is why I wanted to know your secret so badly. I know how much pain having those walls is, and I didn't want someone else to hurt like I do… But of course I was not ready for what those walls were guarding."

Ian nodded. "I still feel bad for telling you, it's not fair to you…"

Plumeria shook her head. "No Ian, I wasn't fair to you. I wanted to know so badly I said you were a threat if you didn't tell me. After all of the things you've done for Team Skull, you didn't deserve that."

Ian nodded. "Thanks."

Plumeria sighed, then cozied up in her chair and made her amber eyes fixate on Ian's. "So, how about this, you can ask me anything you want. Anything you think I'm hiding behind these walls of mine, I'll answer."

Ian shrugged. "Alright, gimme some time to think about it…"

"And for the record I don't know anything what Mina thinks about you," Plumeria uttered.

"It wasn't gonna be about that," Ian said, going into a deep state of pondering. Plumeria had disclosed most of what she knew about the Cinders, and about her interactions with most of the island's factions. But then something that he remembered bothering him one night came back to him.

"You know Plumeria, something always bothered me about you being Big Sis but also being in charge of the recon team," Ian said.

"Really?"

"Yeah. You'd probably be better at Rook's job, protecting Po Town, seeing as you look out for everyone. So why are you in the recon team chasing Ultra Storms?"

Plumeria cursed immediately, with a frustrated grunt following it. "You asshole," Plumeria complained bitterly. "Have I told you I hate how clever you are sometimes?"

"Like two minutes ago," Ian teased.

Plumeria grunted once more but took a deep breath. "It's gonna be more than one sentence."

"I can be here all night," Ian said, pointing up at the lightbulb on the gazebo's ceiling.

"Okay, I'll spill the beans, but you gotta promise me this stays between us," Plumeria demanded.

Ian nodded, then smiled as an idea crossed his mind. He then put his hand out, extending his pinky finger to Plumeria. "Put your pinky out."

"What? Why?"

Ian shook his head. "It's a pinky promise. Something from back in my world."

Plumeria eyed him suspiciously but relented, sticking her hand out and extending her own pinky. Ian's pinky intertwined with Plumeria's and he squeezed hers lightly. "I promise I won't say whatever it is you're about to say to me to anyone else."

Plumeria looked at him like he was crazy but kept her pinky finger interlocked with his. "And the point of this is?"

"It's like, sacred to children," Ian said with a chuckle.

"Sacred?"

"Okay not really, but it's taken way more seriously than you'd think," Ian explained.

"Okay…" Plumeria said, taking another deep breath. "So, this whole thing started because of my dad."

Ian's eyebrows rose, his lips zipped shut, and he began listening attentively.

"He was a Pokemon ranger, he'd drive down to the Ula'Ula Meadow's ranger station for work, doing long hours whenever it was needed," Plumeria explained. "When I was twelve, I figured out mom was cheating on him, and I told him about it… They had a big fight. Dad started spending his nights at the ranger station. Then one day the rangers showed up to our house, looking sad, and they told mom and I that he'd been taken by an Ultra Wormhole…"

Ian gasped as a realization hit him. She asked if I knew a guy when I got out of the Ultra Storm! "Wait, was his name Oleander?"

Plumeria nodded slowly. "Yeah. You remembered."

"Wow…" Ian said, almost speechless.

"So yeah, I've been chasing after Ultra Storms on the off chance he comes back in one," Plumeria said, a tear coming down her face. "Pathetic, I know…"

"Yet you take in everyone regardless," Ian said. "Give them shelter, a place to contribute to…" Ian said as some sort of warm and fuzzy energy flowed through his body. "Misfits… Hell, people even from other worlds like mine who don't know what the fuck they're doing," Ian said with a grin. I knew Po Town was a haven for people who don't belong anywhere, but something about it's just hitting differently right now.

"Well, except that weird guy who got fried by that Vikavolt," Plumeria said. "I still feel guilty about that."

Ian shrugged. "If he was too dumb to follow your guys' lead, that's on him. You shouldn't feel guilty about that."

Plumeria sighed. "Maybe… But he's not the only person I feel guilty about…"

"Oh?" Ian asked. "Who's that then?"

Plumeria eyed Ian solemnly, holding her gaze for long enough for Ian to realize what she was trying to say. "This is probably the worst time to say it, but in case I never see you again, I need to tell you. I think I might be the reason you're here in Alola."

Ian scoffed. "I already told you, I don't blame you about the Keahi stuff-"

"It's not that…" Plumeria looked down dejectedly. "A while back it was my dad's birthday…"

Then where is she going with this?

"...Tom and Grillz had just called a Bones meeting, telling us we didn't even have twenty days of food stores left. Afterwards I did what I always do on the night of my dad's birthday, I go to the top of the walls next to the front gate and see if dad will miraculously come back like nothing happened…" Plumeria said with a light sob. "And while I was looking out into the night sky, I saw a shooting star…"

Ian knew he shouldn't speak, but did his best to show seriously he was listening to her.

"...I don't know how it is in your world, but here, if you make a wish when you see one, the wish is supposed to come true."

"It's the same," Ian whispered, trying not to interrupt.

"...and of course, I wished for my dad to come back, hoping maybe he'd be able to solve this somehow." Plumeria paused some more, another tear falling down her cheek. "But then I said out loud, if he couldn't come, then the universe could send someone, anyone who could help us…"

Ian nodded seriously.

Plumeria grimaced, more waterworks adorning her cheeks. "...and then the next day, you came out of an Ultra Storm."

Ian's jaw dropped in shock.

"Ian, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry-" Plumeria said as she sobbed, ugly-crying into her hands. "I didn't know-" Ian was out of his chair before he realized it, embracing the sobbing Team Skull squad leader as she cried into his shoulder. Plumeria's sobs now were nothing like the almost proud, composed cries during the meeting with Makamae Town's leaders, this was unhinged, like the depths of her soul were being put on display with no filter.

"Ian, please don't leave. I know it's not fair, I know I'm just guilt-tripping you now-"

Ian calmly shooshed her, squeezing her lightly, in a way reminiscent of how Ingo had squeezed his shoulder during his most recent emotional breakdown. "I don't blame you, Plumeria," he said calmly.

"Ian-"

Ian squeezed her once more and whispered tenderly. There's a small minority of me that thinks this could be the greatest manipulation ever, but something about this feels too real.
"I don't think I'm gonna leave," Ian said.

"Really?" Plumeria asked, her waterlogged amber eyes looking up into his own eyes desperately. Plumeria broke eye contact and shook her head. "Guilt-tripping always just backfires eventually-"

"It's not because of the guilt trip," Ian said, keeping his composure. "I've had a lot of time to think about this all the past few days…"

Plumeria nodded, more tears adorning falling from her desperate eyes.

"...and something that keeps coming back to me is the conversation with Ingo."

Plumeria gasped before blabbering with desperation. "Ian, he knows about you! I don't know how, but I swear I didn't tell him-"

"I know you didn't tell him," Ian said. "As weird as it sounds, he's kind of been in my shoes before." Plumeria looked on with bated breath. "He's originally from our time, like now-ish I think, and somehow he got sent back in time to old Sinnoh or Hisui or whatever, and didn't have most of his memories, yet he ended up with the Pearl Clan," Ian explained. "Why he's back in this time, who fucking knows, but he got some great advice when he was back in Hisui, and he encountered a young man that seemed a lot like me, and he gave that advice to the young man, and then to me."

"What was the advice?" Plumeria asked, almost meekly.

"Go where your heart leads, and once there, do the most good you can," Ian said with finality. "Sure I could join the Rough Raiders and Ted would train me to be a good Kahuna or something, or I could go with Colress and he could make me some ridiculously powerful trainer, or I could even stay with the Pearl Clan keeping them fed, heck, probably marry Irida to solidify me staying… But every time I think deeply about it, my mind keeps going back to Po Town. It's not just the times I've shared with all of the people there, it's not about just keeping Po Town fed or what I owe Tupp, and you, and Guzma, and everyone really… But I think about Rylee. One day she's going to go through the same crisis I've been going through, and she'll have no one who understands. And who knows, maybe there'll be more people like me and her, who emerge in an Ultra Storm, and Po Town can take them in like they've taken in everyone else."

Plumeria nodded, deathly serious.

"We were still in the middle of a food crisis and Guzma gave me some snark for getting Rylee, but in reality there wasn't a question. Even though she wasn't going to be able to help us out, and would be completely dependent on us, you took her in without even a second thought. It's something I've finally realized the magnitude of, and I just… deeply admire that. People view us like criminals and scoundrels on this island, and yet there's this profoundly noble thing we do, and we don't do it for fame or anything, we don't tell everyone that we do it… we just do it because it's right."

The tears had since dried on her face, but Plumeria's eyes still looked a little watery, but she now sported a proud smile.

"And something tells me I'm looking at the main reason for that policy," Ian said, slightly bowing his head out of respect. Something about the look in her eye makes me kind of want to give her a kiss or something, it seems kind of fitting. Ian shook the thought from his mind. She's got enough on her plate, she'd probably slap the shit out of me if I did.

Plumeria stepped to him, taking him in her arms and putting her head onto his shoulder. "Thank you Ian… I'll never be able to say it enough."

"Just promise me you're not going to start ugly-crying again," Ian teased as Plumeria released him from the embrace.

Plumeria scoffed. "You are never gonna see that again."

"Bet," Ian said with a cocky smirk.

Plumeria rolled her eyes. "Asshole… Just don't tell anyone about tonight, or that we hugged or anything… I don't want any stupid gossip to get out. I got enough crap going on."

"Yes you do," Ian said with a laugh. "And I'll agree to that. You got my big secret, I got a few of yours, it'll be mutually assured destruction if either of us blabs."

Plumeria rolled her eyes. "Well, I don't have all your secrets, but it's probably high time I told you I did listen to that song you played on the rainy day."

"Rainy day?" Ian asked. Oh wait, Change. "I was thinking you might've heard me butcher that song."

"It was pretty good actually. You'll have to play it for Mina some day," Plumeria teased.

Ian shook his head. "You gals are making too big a deal about that."

Plumeria shrugged. "Well let me know if you need a consultant, you've definitely earned it."

Ian chuckled lightly. "I appreciate it. I think I'm gonna check in for the night."

"Wait, one more thing," Plumeria demanded. "I feel like it's been a while, and you're not so torn up about it anymore…"

"What?" Ian croaked.

"What was your ex-girlfriend's name?" Plumeria asked.

Ian chuckled. "You know, I think I finally moved on from that, there's been too much shit I've dealt with here on Ula'Ula to keep dwelling on old news."

"Good… but her name? I have a reason," Plumeria asked, folding her arms.

Ian rolled his eyes. "Suzy Marie Hartwell, if you gotta know."

"Thanks," Plumeria said. "I'm gonna ask Guzma to put a punching bag in the girls' bunkhouse when we get back. I wanted to give it a good name."

Ian laughed. "Do whatever you want with that. Good night Plumeria."

"Good night, Ian," Plumeria said with sincerity.

Ian went around the barn in the cool, nighttime air before finding his and Tupp's tent. He heard Tupp snoring from the outside, and struggled to find the entry flap's zipper in the darkness, and tried to make his way in slowly. Tupp suddenly stopped snoring.

"Bro, you goin' out?" Tupp asked bluntly, still clearly asleep.

Ian felt a special little smile creep across his face. "Nah man, I'm staying."

"Good yo," Tupp said before returning back to snoring.

Ian zipped up the flap and found his sleeping bag, putting his arms behind his head after getting into the makeshift bed. He stared up at the ceiling unable to wipe the grin from his face or cool the warmth in his heart as Ingo's words echoed in his mind. Do the most good you can…

Hey there, welcome to TR (officially, I guess, since this is your first time posting). As TR's resident Guzma bootlicker, I figured I'd do the honors of being the first to review your fic. Alola rep is important!

I'll be honest and say that I don't read a lot of isekai stories, typically, but your premise sounds super neat. I'm here for chapters 1-3 to get started, so letsgooooo.

As a former food service worker myself, opening scene feels too real. Trying to wrangle all the bitches together to close down shop, and when you have some assholes on the line who simply do not want to cooperate? It's so fucking annoying, and I don't miss those days :ROFLMAO: I guess because this is an SI, you know from experience?

In that same vein......did this cheating thing also happen to you? Might be reading too much into it, but either way, woof. After Ian was just considering getting an engagement ring. And also, who's stupid enough to fuck around with their side piece when the main piece is just a few paces away? Play stupid games, win stupid prizes, I guess.

This concept for Alola is very interesting; I'm really digging the post-apocalyptic vibes that are going on here. It feels too real that the island was suddenly overrun with wormholes that the government decided "hey this shit isn't worth it" and just bailed and left everyone to fend for themselves. But that must mean things are REALLY bad; a lot more than just people from other worlds getting spat out. Pokemon from other regions seem to be showing up to, and based on what Plumeria and Tupp recalled, it sounds like this Pokemon world is pretty dog-eat-dog--or, I guess, Nidoking-eat-Primeape, or Vikavolt-electrocute-human. I don't read a lot of fics where the Pokemon are actually lethal to the humans around them, so I really do enjoy seeing that spin. It's a nice change of pace and a personal favorite fic preference of mine.

I must say, I also really like how you write Guzma. I have always HC'd that he definitely has a penchant for violence and a massive mean streak (clearly, AniPoke makes that clear LOL), but I am particularly loving seeing him in a bit more of a dire light. Like, this isn't just the game storyline where he's working with Aether and trying to thwart the player, or just running his little band of outcasts. He's like, straight up in charge of, essentially, refugees. He actually has to pay attention to things like water supply and food and who stays and who doesn't. It also sounds like there are some turf wars going on, or, at the very least, other "leaders" who are a little more fucked up than he is. Paired with the fact that you do really lean into him being a massive asshole (probably for decent reason), it makes for an interesting take on him. And I'm very picky about renditions of my man 🤡 So, good work. His dialogue felt very in character, as did his mannerisms. You've got him down really well.

I also generally like how you've REALLY struck the vibe of post-apocalyptic refugee camp. Can't shower for longer than 30 seconds, can't eat until a set time, everyone has a role they need to do in order to stay in the town, and it just generally gives the vibe of "dirty but necessary," which I'm all over. Stories like this are a guilty pleasure of mine, and I like cringing through the idea of somebody just being stuck with the clothes on their backs and having to cope with the likes of cramped sleeping quarters, nasty communal bathrooms, not enough food to go around, and the utter disgusting discomfort that comes with it. The thought of being stuck in my sweaty work clothes, having to shower with nothing more than a hairy bar of soap for 30 seconds, then having to put those clothes right back on without a means for drying off? God, I die. Bro must be chafing so fucking bad.

I do wonder what the response to Ian catching a deerling is going to be. Everyone was already giving him such shit for the pink heal ball, so I can only imagine what the reaction is gonna be when he comes back with a pink deerling. But, it technically counts, I suppose, so I'm happy he got one in the bag, and it'll be very interesting to see how it all plays out.

That said, I do have some notes, as while I did enjoy a lot of content within this story, I do think the prose and the execution of your ideas could use some improvement. The most substantial thing that I noticed throughout this is that you do a lot of exposition and not really a lot internal character thought. Like, yes, Ian does have a lot of lines of thought, but you really don't give him a lot of time to sit with the things that have happened to him. In general, a lot of it feels rather rushed.

For example, when he caught Suzy and Alex, it was rather...anticlimactic for lack of a better term. The way it was written, we got maybe a line or two of his reaction before he stormed out, and I feel like a moment like that, the thing that kicks this story into gear, essentially, needs to be lingered on a little more. Get into the nitty gritty of how he feels as he's watching them. Does he think back to the recent days, when he believes there is not a thing wrong? Does he try to recall if he noticed anything strange between him and Alex? Maybe leading up to the moment, he notices something off about the way Alex is acting toward Suzy, and suddenly it makes sense. As it is now, you're kind of just telling things as they happen and not really showing, and you're being a little too quick about it, too.

This also comes out when he first meets Plumeria and the grunts. As I read on, I got the vibe that things are pretty dire in Po Town. Like, they're running out of food and don't have enough water to allow the civilians to shower for longer than 30 seconds. That said, in a situation like that, I'd expect Plumeria and the grunts to be A LOT more slow to trust and accept Ian along for the ride. The way it is now, they have a couple lines of dialogue, and suddenly, aside from maybe Hyde, they're super buddy-buddy with him and willing to take him back with them. It was almost instant, and it kind of undercuts the severity of what they're dealing with. I would consider revisiting this section and perhaps drawing out Plumeria's reluctance to take Ian along. Yes, I know he's not the first Faller to have shown up, but I imagine that would make her MORE frustrated with find another one. Have her rant about how they don't have enough supplies to bring him back. Have Tupp insist further that they can't afford to have another useless mouth to feed. Have them try to leave Ian behind and Ian breaks down and begs them to come along. Your summary portrays something dire, so make sure that your exposition is highlighting that. Everyone is in a desperate situation here, and they should all be acting like that, and it shouldn't be something that is just raced through.

Additionally, and please do not take this personally--so far, I'm not a fan of Ian's characterization. There doesn't seem to be anything very consistent about him, and it's made it hard for me to really like seeing things from his POV. I don't find him very likeable, to start. This wouldn't be an issue if I got the vibe that you were trying to make him unlikeable, but that's not the vibe I'm getting. I think a part of that unlikeability is majorly stemming from the fact that his characterization is all over the place, but there are things he does that I BELIEVE were included for the sake of comedy, but all they do is kind of make him seem like an annoying jerk. For example, the first thing he does when he gets to what he assumes is a dream is ask for a busty goth girl.....did he not just lose his partner, who he was ready to marry, less than 12 hours ago? Not only is that strange, it's not really in line with what I would expect from somebody who just caught the love of their life cheating in cold blood. There's also the much less prominent instance of him constantly referring to the girls simply frowning as "resting bitch face"? It just seems a little......juvenile. I understand the grunts are pretty juvenile (and you write that well) but I don't think that's what you were going for with Ian, so it really reads off in practice.

Another thing I noticed is that his trains of thought were very one note. I'd say 90% of them were Is that X? or Is that Y? or I wonder what Z. I know you're kind of doing this to, I suppose, get the point across to your reader, but things like that start to become extremely info-dump-y. You're writing for the Pokemon fandom, and you'd do well to assume that the fandom knows what you're talking about as you write things. However, more importantly, considering Ian has definitely played the Pokemon games in his home world, it feels rather off that he's constantly asking himself "is that X Pokemon?" LIke, I get the vibe that he should just know based on his experience, but you write him like he's seeing a lot of this for the first time, which continues to bog down his characterization. If you're giving him some lines of thought, they need to mean something more than him just taking note after note of the Pokemon he's seeing. It'll help things read a lot smoother.

Lastly, your character descriptions. You tend to spend an unnecessary amount of time, and sentence allotment, describing what characters look like. For OCs like Ian and Suzy and Alex, I get it, but you don't need a paragraph describing in detail what Guzma or Plumeria looks like and is wearing. You really don't need it, period. Typically, a moment of discussing character appearances shouldn't be longer than a sentence, maybe 2 if you're describing something particularly important. It also shouldn't be thrown in randomly in the middle of exposition or dialogue, examples of which I pulled below with my line-by-lines

Line by lines:
The drone of the three level pizza oven made hearing the newbie's words a bit difficult, but
Ian reciprocated the fist bump all the same. "Welcome to the team, Matt," Ian replied with a big smile. "It's how things should be."
Improper line break here

"I feel like I belong here man. I know it's just my first day, but the other place was nothing like this," the teenage new hire told Ian, leaning in and holding his fist out.

The drone of the three level pizza oven made hearing the newbie's words a bit difficult, but
Ian reciprocated the fist bump all the same. "Welcome to the team, Matt," Ian replied with a big smile. "It's how things should be."

"You sure you don't want any help? I'd be happy to do it," Matt asked, indicating the counters with random bits of sauce, cheese, and toppings.

"I wish I could say yes, but you're a minor and it's a school night. I'll get in deep shit if you're here past 10:00," Ian explained. "I'll take you up on it someday though."

"Okay. Thanks again, Ian," Matt said sincerely.

He watched the teenage new hire walk out of the kitchen, and the 6'2 supervisor with brown hair and slim build sighed in frustration as he scanned the kitchen again, seeing how much he still had to do. "Alex, why?" Ian muttered to no one in particular. With the edge off his frustration, he brushed the flour off his wet, black shirt.
Teenage new hire is a clunky way to just say "new hire." You can weave in the fact that he's a teenager in more naturally by just leaving it at "you're a minor and it's a school night." That gets the point across plenty.

Like my last bit of crit said, this is an unnecessarily clunky way to describe what Ian looks like. Instead, I would recommend mentioning that maybe he catches his reflection in a stainless steel appliance and realizes he has sauce in his brown hair, or maybe he hits his head on a particularly low-hanging pan or doorframe and curses how tall he is compared to his coworkers.

and a black shirt that instead of flour was wet from washing dishes.
Suggested edit:

"and a black shirt that was spared flour, but was instead soaked from dishwashing."

Ian dropped his towel and leaned in to give the cute brunette with glasses a kiss.
Like my previous note, this is a clunky way to describe looks, especially from a character POV. Instead, I would suggest something like, "he brushed a strand of her browning hair away from her glasses before leaning in for a kiss"

Alex's voice
Suzy's voice asked
You don't need to add "voice," just keep it at the names for a more streamlined read

Ian cursed and answered the phone. "What?" Ian spat.
Ian can just become "he," the reader would already know who's talking here

Ian closed his phone and looked up to the night sky, the orange of the lunar eclipse resting seemingly right over his house from his angle as he made his way to the front door.
Suggested edit:

Ian closed his phone and looked up to the night sky, taking in the sight of the orange-tinted lunar eclipse, looking like it was mere feet above the roof of his house. He continued to eye it all the way to his front door.

opting straight for his bedroom while still in his sweaty, soggy, floury uniform.
"Opting to head straight..." ?

The purple color stuck out even more against the realistic greenery around him and the... Pokemon.Looks oddly realistic.
Spacing in this sentence is off

"Okay, if I'm really lucid dreaming, can a busty goth girl appear in front of me?"
I mentioned this before, but this does not go in line with the character of somebody who just caught their soon-to-be fiance cheating with a coworker. I think you could up the potency of that and have him wish for Suzy instead.

Something caught his eye on the ground, a gleaming, ruby red gem of sorts on the ground in the shape of a four-pointed star.
Unnecessary repetition

It was sunny, perfectly sunny, like a tropical paradise. Ian gasped as he moved his whole body through the wall of fog. The sky turned blue as he exited the blanket of fog, and turning back to look, he noticed the wall of fog was actually more like the upper half of a sphere.
Unnecessary repetition

Ian stammered, as he processed the events that had happened what felt like such a short time ago more than what Plumeria had just asked him.
Suggested edit:

Ian stammered, processing the events that had happened no more than X minutes ago. That set far heavier on his mind than what Plumeria had asked him.

Plumeria rolled her eyes. "You know what an Alpha Pokemon is at least, that's good..." Plumeria sighed.
No need to use her name here, "she" would suffice because you already denoted that she is the subject here

"Besides this whole thing possibly being a drug-induced hallucination?" Ian said with an uneasy laugh. "No."

The blue haired grunt with the Gumshoos busted up with laughter, causing a death glare from Plumeria. "Tupp, shut up!" Plumeria barked.
This is something I needed to learn to, because I used to have this same problem--when you're wanting to write characters losing their shit with laughter, take a moment to think about if what was said was actually that funny. Is him sarcastically asking if this is a drug-induced hallucination really worthy of somebody having a fit of laughter, or is it something that would be more likely to garner a flat "Ha!" or somebody blowing a little more air out of their nose? Keeping things like that in mind can really help avoid "overreactions" like this.

and the aches and pains in his body took hold. A fly started bothering Ian for a moment, and he didn't think much of it for a moment before realizing something:
Repetition

"Girl he was like, 'I'mma e-si-guy protagonist' and he had special powers and that we should listen to him,"
This was really funny

"You could always hit up the Driftwood Guild for more balls, but that would involve having something to trade," Plumeria lectured. "And I say no to practicing with you because as one of Team Skull's 'Bones.' my Pokemon have to be in top shape to fight threats at any time. Remember the last time Breon's guys attacked the outer wall?"
This is a big example of "info dumpy dialogue" that I saw a lot of. Presumably, the grunts already know this stuff, so why is she talking to them, explaining this to them, like it's the first time they've ever heard it? It would make more sense if she said this specifically to Ian. Like...

"I don't practice with them because I'm one of Team Skull's 'Bones.' But you don't need to worry about that right now."

"Fuck you!" Hyde called back.

"Fuck you too!" Tupp called back,
Repetition

Guzma's hair was dyed, with most of what was shown to be white, but his roots were black. His black jacket covered most of his upper body from the angle, but Ian could see a bit of white shirt around his collar. Guzma had a pair of large sunglasses resting on his forehead, and his baggy black pants had a pair of white X's on them at the knee.
Again with the long-winded character description. Especially for somebody like Guzma, who readers presumably know of, you don't need to spend so much time going down every detail of his appearance unless something has changed drastically.

Tom was a middle-aged man Latino man,
Typo here?

"Aw, newbie got a fucking pink one!" One of the grunts teased. "They already know you a pussy dude."
This is a personal preference, but I feel like not every thug in the vicinity would be so vicious about their distaste for the color pink? Nowadays, I feel like it's widely considered pretty ballsy and cool to sport pink, so I think it would be a little extra fun thing if somebody else came to his defense, like "nah, bro, pink's cool, you're the pussy here."

"Also we get Rockruff's from the hills down here too."
Rockruffs, no possessive S needed.

I apologize that this ended up being so crit heavy, but I hope my notes help you on your writing journey. If anything I said might have rubbed you the wrong way, or if you have any questions/want clarification, please don't hesitate to reach out! I'm happy to talk things through as needed.

Hey there, welcome to TR (officially, I guess, since this is your first time posting). As TR's resident Guzma bootlicker, I figured I'd do the honors of being the first to review your fic. Alola rep is important!

Thank you very much for the welcome! Across the various sites I've posted this story to and all of the comments and likes I've gotten, I finally get the much needed grammar critique. Thank goodness! First off I want to say thank you for giving the first few chapters of this story a read and the very specific, very detailed feedback here. You definitely put some time into it, and I really can't say how much I appreciate it. I'm not a big fan of Isekai/SI stuff myself, and this story is my way of poking fun at the common tropes of shallow, self-indulgent Isekai stories I've read (and mostly disliked). I have worked in food service, but I haven't had this exact scenario happen. I largely wanted the MC to have as few ties to the "before world" as possible (he still does, but I've always found the Isekai protagonists just happily accepting they're never seeing their loved ones again as very hard to believe, to put it lightly). This story is very Legends: Arceus-y in tone (and heavily inspired as well, Ultra Storms, Ultra Rifts etc), and is actually kind of my unofficial sequel to that game's story, oddly enough.

I absolutely love the characters of Guzma and Plumeria and I'm glad I'm making Guzma's #1 fan happy so far. My prose and descriptions are definitely the weakest part of my writing skills as you noticed. I come from a theatrical background, where we didn't really need to do that very much. I like to think in the time since chapter 1 was posted to now I've improved a lot in that area, but it definitely needs more work. Once I get dialogue I really like flowing, finding the spot to put the needed descriptions is very difficult for me to this day.

As far as internal character thought, the last Pokemon fanfic I read beforehand was "These Silver Eyes" where there are sometimes paragraphs of internal thought that spell out obvious things that just occurred, and that bothered me. I suppose I went a little too extreme in the opposite direction, especially early on in this. This definitely shows out in the "before world" of the story, but I was also trying to get to the actual Isekai itself as quickly as possible. I wrote the cheating revelation part thinking Ian's brain had essentially short-circuited, and he just needed to leave before getting aggressive. But yeah, for how devastating that is to him, there needed to be a bit more time devoted in the head space.

As far as info-dumpy stuff, yeah, chapter 1 is trying to do a LOT as far world introduction. I like to think things become more fluid as things progress. As far as Plumeria's squad taking Ian in so quickly, her squad's thing is to go investigate the Ultra Storms. Picking up the random people who come out of them is a lot of what this squad does. Plumeria's harsh and brutal on the outside, but I've always seen her as a big softy on the inside. Most of the themes of this story really come down to taking in the outcasts, the misfits, refugees, and what those people can bring to the place that takes them in. All of those themes really start with her. This becomes clear as things progress (which I hate saying so much to good, honest feedback). Hilariously enough, the latest chapter I posted here (Chapter 24: At the Threshold) really goes in depth on this. It's one of the scenes I'm most proud of writing, and if you end up continuing beyond Chapter 3, I'd love to get feedback on (no pressure and no worries if not, especially if my weak prose is giving you an aneurysm lmao).

So again, thank you so much for taking the time to not only read my work but also give sincere feedback for it. Over time I'll go and adjust some of the smaller things you pointed out. And thanks again for welcoming me to TR!

Chapter 23: Surprise New

Oceanside Lowlife

Bug Catcher
Chapter 23 Surprise

The sun shone so brightly the next morning that Ian had to cover his eyes as he emerged from the tent, Tupp still snoring. A wide grin seemed glued to his face as he breathed in the fresh morning air. Everything just seems so much brighter for some reason.

"Well good morning young Ian," Colress' voice called out from the front of his tent.

Ian froze as he saw the disappointment in Colress' eyes as he approached. "I see you're still here," Colress said, adjusting his glasses. "I take it you'll be staying with Team Skull?"

Ian nodded. "Yeah, honestly it feels right to me for now."

Colress gave a nonchalant shrug. "Well it can't be helped. If things ever go south with them and you're able to keep neutral relations with the ASF, you will be more than welcome wherever I end up."

Ian nodded. "Thanks. Do you think you'll be sticking around long though? Won't you be trying to get back?"

Colress shook his head. "I have no true idea, but considering this world has Mohn as the Aether President as opposed to Lusamine, I would presume Ultra Wormhole research is likely behind where I come from and a few more costly mechanisms will need to be invented before I can even attempt to find my way home," Colress said, a knowing smile appearing on his face. "But considering this is likely my last day with you for a long time, I have some things I want to tell you about your Tyrunt. Let's get some breakfast going for your team."

Colress led Ian to the other side of the barn where there were just the domesticated cattle loomed in their pasture not too far off. Ian got Sandshrew out, who looked around for its favorite Pokemon to bully before looking at Ian disappointedly. Colress tossed Ian a small ball of condensed food and Sandshrew's demoralized demeanor instantly flipped as Ian knelt down and gave the food to the icy Sandshrew who ate it greedily.

"Now let Tyrunt out, but don't attack it outright," Colress instructed.

Ian took Tyrunt's Ultra Ball in his hand and realized he didn't feel nearly as nervous as he normally would with his murder-focused baby tyrannosaur. I must really trust Sandshrew quite a bit now. Ian turned to Sandshrew and gave him a smile and a nod of recognition, to which Sandshrew reciprocated.

Ian released Tyrunt, who didn't immediately roar its usual, horrifying roar. Instead it eyed its trainer intensely and growled, angry, but more reserved than usual.

"Great, step one is complete!" Colress announced. "Now, still keep your distance, but feel free to get closer."

Ian's chest got a little tense as he took the two condensed brown balls of food from Colress, but stepped forward carefully. Tyrunt hissed a little, but gave a loud warning growl, Ian figured he was as close as Tyrunt would allow. "Thanks girl," he said, then took one of the food balls in his hand and held it up, to which Tyrunt snapped its jaws. "Open!' Ian ordered authoritatively, and Tyrunt growled angrily, but did so. Ian tossed the first food ball and Tyrunt caught it in her mouth. Tyrunt gulped it down quickly and took a step to Ian. "Stay!" Ian yelled out, trying to mask how much the six foot tyrannosaur approaching him scared the shit out of him. "Open!" Ian ordered once more, to which Tyrunt growled, annoyed, but did so. He tossed the other food ball into Tyrunt's mouth, who gulped it down happily. Yes, finally!

Tyrunt then eyed Sandshrew with disdain, to which Sandshrew pointed and squeaked with laughter once more, provoking Tyrunt to roar loudly. Ian had Tyrunt's Ultra Ball at the ready and recalled his baby tyrannosaur in a beam of red light as he sighed with relief. Ian began releasing the rest of his party for their breakfasts as well.

"Exemplary work, young Ian," Colress said happily as he finished manifesting more condensed food balls. "Seeing as that likely woke up your compatriots, let me explain a little bit more on Alphas," Colress said as he manifested more condensed Pokemon food from his Silph Bag. "Step two of the training process is getting Tyrunt to follow your orders, which will still be a slow process. Once that is finished and you're confident Tyrunt won't just eat any lifeform it sees, you'll be able to get to step three: acquiring its 'Alpha Eyes.' In order for Alphas to get their 'Alpha Eyes' that empower them, they need to be out of their ball and in nature for at least forty minutes a day," Colress explained. "The longer the better though as the eyes' effect can wear off rather easily," Colress continued.

"Gotcha," Ian said, wishing he had a note pad to write the specifics down but had instead given the last of the food balls to Sawsbuck, who bleated happily. It does seem like a natural progression.

"And your Sawsbuck…" Colress said, a proud grin crossing his face, his eyes mesmerized in wonder. "I have seen Pokemon blessed by legendaries before, and I'll have you know, that blessed stag may end up learning a move or two its fellow Sawsbuck would not normally learn."

"Really? Like what?" Ian asked.

"Probably something like Tapu Bulu's Nature's Madness," Colress said. "And who knows what else. My omnitron isn't picking it up, but it often depends on the Pokemon itself."

Ian nodded. "Thank you Colress, I really appreciate the help. If I'm ever in your same town in the near future I'll bring Sawsbuck along to let you do a real analysis."

Colress put his hand over his heart almost over-dramatically. "Oh, to give that Sawsbuck of yours a proper lab analysis would be almost a dream come true. But I digress, your friends are waking up."

Ian turned to see Tupp stretching as he exited their tent, with Selene and Rapp emerging from theirs with bedheads. Colress began manifesting protein bars and handfuls of condensed food balls for each member of the squad and their teams. "Thank you for keeping all of us fed, Colress," Ian said, extending his hand.

Colress sighed. "Much more where that came from," he said lowly as Tupp and Rapp approached.

"Yo bro, why you up so early?" Tupp asked.

"Last bit of training before we say goodbye to Colress," Ian replied.

"Oh yeah. When you leavin' yo?" Tupp asked the scientist.

"When the ASF group arrives with the shipment, I'll have them escort me through the checkpoint," Colress explained.

"When they comin' through, yo?" Rapp asked.

Ian shrugged. "No clue."

"Our host said sometime before lunch," Colress said as he offered protein bars to Rapp and Tupp.

"Gotta be honest, even though we been eatin' these things for like, four days, these ain't that bad," Tupp said.

"Glad to hear," Colress said, growing disinterested in the conversation.

The three newly awakened Team Skull members ate and fed their respective Pokemon parties, and Selene took Ian aside. "You look a lot happier today, and I think Plumeria was even smiling in her sleep. I've never seen that. You guys patch things up?"

Ian nodded. "We did."

"Ugh, finally! We're Team Skull, we're not supposed to be having stupid drama like that," Rapp complained bitterly.

Ian spotted Plumeria emerging from her tent, her hair looking rather frazzled, but she did have an uncharacteristic grin on her face. Yeah that DOES make her look weird. "You're right, but I think it needed to happen. A lot of stuff was building up there, and I think we'll be better off for it in the long run."

Selene shook her head. "Ian you sound so corny I almost wish Hyde was here to give you crap."

Ian rolled his eyes. "Was it really that bad?"

"YES!" Selene and Rapp shouted together before bursting into a fit of laughter.

***

Hyde finished placing his injured right ankle on the cushion on top of the guest house's leg rest he'd been using to keep his wounded foot elevated and groaned as he did. His red and black striped tiger-cat shuffled in lazily from the other room and gave a loud yawn as it jumped onto the sofa and curled up next to its trainer. Hyde began petting his Torracat gently, and Torracat's messy fur coat began to straighten as the Pokemon started enjoying itself. "Thanks for keeping me company, Torracat. This is what, four days since they left? Should be coming back soon…"

Torracat gave a light, cheerful meow before nestling up even closer to Hyde. As Hyde ran his hands over Torracat's fur once more, he realized his watch had caught on some of Torracat's fur, causing his very large kitty to hiss in discomfort. Once he got his hand away from Torracat's fur, Hyde pulled his newly superglued-together watch off his right hand and placed it in his left, while his right returned to petting Torracat. "My bad there, buddy," Hyde admitted. Torracat chose not to respond, and Hyde saw a hint of his reflection in his shiny watch's surface. As his eyes lingered on his brother's old watch, memories of his brother didn't stream into his mind, but Hyde's own shame. About Ian… Hyde's blood started to boil, but not in anger at the newcomer and potential spy, but Hyde's own actions.

Hyde shook his head. "It's gotten so bad now I can't hide from it anymore," Hyde told Torracat as he pondered his next few words. "If I hadn't used this watch to tip off Surge's convoy and booked it right for Ian's tree on that first mission with him, he might not even be in Team Skull right now, and of course he then shows up with a Pokemon blessed by Tapu Bulu." Hyde smacked himself upside the head, causing Torracat to raise its head in concern. "The harder I try to screw him over, the better he does, dammit." Torracat gave a low, comforting purr.

"So Torracat, here will be the deal…" Hyde said lowly. "If all five of the squad come back with no issues, I'll try to not be a dick to that Unovan." Hyde smiled as he figured there'd be plenty of space for him to still get his licks on Ian. I'm the only one that's kept his ego in check. "He has saved us from starving, that has to mean something," Hyde pondered aloud then remembered something very crucial. What if he doesn't come back? What if he takes my advice and dips at Palmer's Ranch? Hyde's chest got tense as he realized the implications. "If he leaves Team Skull and he tells Tupp or Plumeria about what I told him that night before the climb, I'm gonna get blamed," Hyde realized. Well there was the blow up with Plumeria, but there's no way Plumeria doesn't walk that shit back if there's a chance of him leaving. This did little to assuage the feelings of guilt and shame wracking Hyde's heart, and he shook his head. "If Ian comes back, we gotta be cool with him, Torracat," Hyde said, returning to petting his large tiger-cat. Torracat meowed lowly and rubbed its fur-adorned cheek against Hyde's leg, causing a slight irritation for Hyde, but he knew Torracat enjoyed the act far more than it irritated his trainer.

Five minutes later there was a knock at the door and Hyde groaned. "Who is it?" Hyde asked, annoyed.

"It is Irida," Irida's elegant, angelic voice responded as if immune to Hyde's hostility. "I have another Driftwood Guild member here I would like for you to share the guest house with."

"Shit," Hyde said lowly as fixed his hair a bit. "Come on in!"

The old door with no lock swung open and Irida walked in, mesmerizing Hyde as she always did. Behind her was a brown-skinned, male Driftwood Guild member adorned in their khaki cargo pants, green shirt, and brown vest, with Hyde noticing the standard twisted badge of intertwining pale wood. "And what's your name?" Hyde asked the entering Driftwood Guild member.

"Elel," he replied casually. "You're Hyde, the Team Skull member?"

"Yeah," Hyde croaked.

"Nice to meet you," Elel said, not caring to sound genuine.

"And Hyde…" Irida began, a soft daintiness in her voice that pulled at Hyde's heart. "...I have some bad news."

You're getting married? "What's going on?"

"Yesterday, we received an emissary from Breon, demanding our town's submission and that I deliver that news to him personally, not to return here," Irida said dramatically. "Did you hear about it?"

Hyde shook his head. "Not at all. I was here most of yesterday," Hyde said, pointing at his elevated foot.

"It shook us quite a bit," Irida said. "I apologize for not informing you."

Hyde shook his head once more. "I'm a guest, it wasn't my business."

"Thank you for understanding," Irida said with a smile that nearly melted Hyde's heart. "The emissary gave us an hour to deliberate and when we rejected the offer, the emissary said there would be dire consequences."

That's not good.

"We have increased our sentry rotations and will be expecting an attack any day now," Irida explained. "We of course will do our best to guarantee your safety considering you are injured-"

"I'll be able to fight if need be," Hyde said, maneuvering up from his chair and standing up, causing what little pressure he put on his right foot to flare up with pain and shoot up the rest of his leg. He stifled a grimace but stayed standing.

"Considering Team Skull is at peace with Breon, we would not ask that you risk entangling your people in our conflict although we do appreciate your resolve, Hyde," Irida said with a nod. Damn, she's so hot when she compliments me.

"I'll be fine, you ain't gotta worry about me," Hyde said proudly.

"I'm glad to hear. The Pearl Clan's leaders have been discussing a number of ideas of how to address the situation, and something that has come up multiple times would be a potential alliance with Team Skull," Irida explained.

Not sure how Guzma would take it, but I heard Plumeria complaining about a marriage alliance. If someone's gotta marry Irida to make it happen, I'm calling dibs. "I can't speak for Guzma, but Breon going down would be good for Team Skull."

Irida smiled once more and Hyde felt a fire in his blood. "I am glad to hear. Of course we will have to wait until Plumeria and Ian return from Palmer's Ranch before we propose something formally."

Hyde gulped as the anxiety in his chest grew heavier and he felt a slight pressure in his groin, indicating he needed to pee soon. Ian coming back might be a big "if."

"We good here?" Elel asked.

"Yes I believe so," Irida said.

"Hey Hyde," Elel said as Hyde started preparing his body to sit back down. "Since you're up, why don't you make yourself useful and help me look for a Driftwood Badge that got lost here?"

Hyde readied a sassy retort but noticed Irida's eyes on him and butterflies immediately entered his stomach. "I gotta piss, but sure, I'll help you first," Hyde said, taking a limping step as his right leg flared up with pain after putting pressure on it once more.

"Hyde, I can have Gaeric get you some ice from his Avalugg," Irida offered.

Hyde shook his head as he scowled once more, part from the pain and part from dealing with Gaeric again after the first time Gaeric gave a similar offer. He's not exactly my biggest fan. "I'll be fine," Hyde said with a grunt as Elel went to the bedroom where the girls had slept for the two nights they'd stayed in Makamae Town.

"Okay then, we'll let you know if anything changes," Irida said as she turned to depart.

"Bye Irida," Hyde said, trying to sound pleasant. He watched Irida's elegant form exit and immediately went for a small closet he'd remembered seeing a pile of clothes in at the bottom of. He checked the cluttered shelf up top, then rifled through the clothes on hangers at his level before he grunted and slowly got down on his knees. He put too much pressure on his ankle and collapsed as pain shot up his leg.

"You alright kid?" Elel called from the other room.

"Fine!" Hyde retorted with frustration. He got in a better position and started sifting through the pile of dusty old clothes on the ground. He began probing the ground through the fabric of the clothes before he started putting them behind him. First was a light blue collared shirt, a gray blouse with a flower on it, then a black shirt with a tie-dye design on it, and finally a khaki vest where Hyde spotted the twisted, pale wood badge. "Found it!"

Elel scrambled over to Hyde who held up the jacket with the pale, wooden badge on it. After Elel swiped the badge from Hyde he offered his hand to help Hyde get up. After helping Hyde to his feet and supporting him back to the couch with the footrest, Hyde elevated his foot once more. "So since I did you guys a favor, can you do one for me?"

Elel folded his arms but sighed. "I'm not paying you for that."

"Don't need the money. You guys got all the information though," Hyde pointed out.

"Nothing too specific."

"It's a concept really," Hyde said.

"Okay, shoot."

"Is it normal for Fallers who come out of Ultra Storms to have these meteoric rises like Ian's had with Team Skull?" Hyde asked.

Elel grinned. "A more nuanced question than I'd anticipated, I'll give you that. But it's usually not the case, although we have heard of some people saying rather strange and bizarre things when they emerge from Ultra Storms."

"But there are people like Ian who have risen the ranks incredibly fast?" Hyde asked.

"To my knowledge, not a lot…" Elel then paused as something came to the forefront of his mind. "There is one trainer I've heard about recently, who's been making waves in the ASF."

"What's their name?" Hyde demanded.

Elel scoffed. "Nothing too specific, remember?"

Hyde growled at the Driftwood Guild member but relented. "Fine. As long as we're not the only ones dealing with someone like Ian it feels a little re-assuring."

Elel shrugged. "Whatever your floats boat, Hyde-"

A sudden sound of a horn from beyond the village caused both men to look outside the small window of the guest house. "The hell's that?" Hyde asked.

Elel shook his head. "They're likely seeing some of Breon's forces."

As moments passed, more commotion occurred outside and Elel opened the door to check things out, with Hyde limping behind him as he watched dozens of uniformed Pearl Clan members running to the top of the switchbacks urgently.

"Elel, Hyde, go to the city center!" Irida yelled, pointing to the large building where he'd received most of his meals. And where Plumeria and Ian went in front of their council.

Elel nodded respectfully and held up his hand to help Hyde get over as well. "Aw, c'mon Irida," Hyde complained bitterly.

Irida shook her head. "I cannot risk Guzma or Plumeria's ire if you were wounded."

"Irida!" Ingo's gruff voice called out as he jogged slowly to them, flanked by a few trainers. "I ask that you stay back to defend the non-combatants since Breon's men will be targeting you for capture."

Irida's graceful, elegant face twisted into a murderous rage as she held up an old looking Ultra Ball and tossed it into the air. "I would like to see them try," Irida fired back as the apricorn-based Ultra Ball opened and a huge, white furred creature with red tips at the end of its fur coat emerged. It reminded Hyde of an anthropomorphic fox but hunched over, with a mane of white fur with red tips coming out of its neck. It gave a proud roar as it manifested, and Hyde's jaw dropped as he noticed its glowing Alpha Red Eyes burning with rage and power.

"Zoroark, some intruders have come to capture me," Irida said with an elegant cruelty. "Give them something to target."

Zoroark growled cheerfully and began to glow, then after a moment, the light disappeared and an almost exact clone of Irida stood before the group, but with blood red eyes instead of Irida's normally deep blue ones. Suddenly the faux-Irida's mouth opened, revealing razor sharp fangs and a long, thinner tongue than a human's licked the imposter Irida's lips, eyes burning with murderous intent before turning and running with inhuman speed to join the other Pearl Clan warriors.

Hyde felt a small tinge of wetness around his groin and looked down, noticing a slight stain. I think I just pissed myself a little.

***

"Is that them?" Rapp asked, looking out from the gazebo. The rest of the Team Skull members turned their attention to the ranch house, and Ian noticed a military humvee driving up.

"Gotta be," Plumeria said, turning and pointing to Ian and Selene. "You two are with me. Rapp, Tupp, don't wander too far off."

"Okay Big Sis," Tupp said dejectedly.

Rapp shrugged, getting into the seat Selene had occupied. "Gonna be boring as fuck anyways."

Ian followed Plumeria and Selene out of the gazebo and close to the perimeter of the house, and Ian noticed Colress sitting on a chair on the back patio. "Your ride's here!" Plumeria called out to the scientist.

"I figured that was them," Colress said, getting out of the wooden chair and stretching before standing attentively for Plumeria and the squad.

When the trio joined the scientist on the deck, they waited outside the ranch house, a tense quiet falling over them. Plumeria finally broke the silence by going next to Ian and whispering. "Do me a favor and don't talk about Sawsbuck or anything please."

Ian rolled his eyes. "Fine."

Suddenly a couple knocks came from the other side of the backdoor and a half East Asian woman and European woman opened the door with a smile. "They're ready for you inside."

"Thank you Kathy," Plumeria said, letting Colress go first.

Kathy led the four to the living room where two dining room chairs with a small end table had been arranged in the center of the room. Craig Palmer sat in one, flanked by two figures Ian didn't expect to see but instantly recognized.

To Palmer's right was a woman a few years older than him with purple hair done up in a bun, wearing a khaki soldier's uniform. Anabel? The other wore the same uniform, but had short, blonde hair and bright green eyes. Gladion? Oh yeah, the family never broke up and that's why he's not with Team Skull.

"Greetings friends," Colress said first, bowing to Anabel. "You may recognize me-"

"Mr. Palmer gave us the rundown," Anabel said curtly. "You would be most welcome with us, Dr. Colress. Although we may get you confused with our own."

"Not a problem," Colress said with an unsettling chuckle.

"Welcome, guests," Craig said warmly. To my right is Major Anabel Towers of the Alolan Security Forces, and her NCO, Corporal Gladion Aether."

"Hey guys, long time no see," Selene said with a smile.

The two ASF members gasped as they realized who was before them. "Selene?" Gladion said in shock. "I didn't hear if you got out of Haina Town…"

Selene nodded. "Had to go east, but Team Skull took me in."

Gladion put a hand over his heart. "I'm so relieved…" Anabel cleared her throat loudly, and Gladion straightened up. "Apologies for the interruption, everyone."

"Good to see you too Ms. Anabel," Selene said. "Been a while since that trip to Aether Paradise, right?"

Anabel rolled her eyes. "It has indeed, Selene. Would you all introduce yourselves, please?"

"I'm Plumeria Hemlock, one of the 'Bones' of Team Skull, beside me are Selene Tsukino and Ian Cougar," Plumeria said. Ian followed Anabel's eyes, which seemed to take a full body scan of Plumeria. Did Anabel just check her out?

Selene raised her hand nervously, and Plumeria glared at her but gave her a quick "what?"

"Ms. Anabel, when did you join the ASF?" Selene asked. "Weren't you the head of security of Aether Paradise?"

Anabel rolled her eyes. "Well considering Aether Paradise no longer needs one since it's been abandoned, and President Mohn's son Gladion here decided to join the ASF, I was asked to make sure he stayed safe by Mohn and Lusamine."

"Cool!" Selene cheered.

Plumeria took the seat across from Craig and the two began going over specifics of the order. Ian found Gladion's focus on him quite a bit, and Ian tried to smile, but would only be met with a scowl from Gladion. You'd think the criminal outlaws would be the ones looking pissed off all the time. Anabel approached Craig's flank and looked over the list of ordered materials.

"That seems an awful lot for one town," Anabel observed.

"It's what Guzma asked me to get," Plumeria said.

Anabel didn't seem pleased with the answer. "Even though there has been no direct hostility between Team Skull and the ASF, doing favors for active hostiles of the ASF would change that designation." She's already sniffed out we're doing a solid for the Rough Raiders, great. "In fact, some of these devices are the opposite of their intended purpose, these water pipes-"

"We're unsure of what methods will be best for us, so we're casting a large net to figure that out through trial and error," Plumeria said in a polite but firm voice.

Anabel grimaced, but relented. "Very well then. Although it seems late to be conducting agriculture at this scale, you all should have started a long time ago. Most of these seeds won't be ready for harvest for months."

Ian could feel Plumeria's eyeroll. "That is for us to worry about," Plumeria said, a hint of attitude in her voice, and Anabel stepped back into her position.

It took a number of minutes until Craig and Plumeria shook hands, and Plumeria began manifesting treasures, from Star Pieces, gold coins and nuggets to two Comet Shards. Anabel took her high-tech Silph Bag and began selecting options on her touch screen before giving it to Craig, who then pointed his bag at Plumeria's low-tech version. Plumeria's Silph Bag began shaking for a few seconds before it paused and gave an affirmative beep.

"Perfect!" Craig announced, shaking Plumeria's hand once more. "In an act of unity, may I invite all of you for lunch? Kathy's been working on it all morning."

Selene gasped. "Home-cooked food? That would be amazing!"

Plumeria scowled at Selene for a moment but relented. "I don't see a problem with that."

Anabel nodded. "As do I. I'll get my people from outside."

"Same," Plumeria said, looking at Ian. Ian got the message and hustled outside. A couple minutes later he was back inside with Rapp and Tupp, with Plumeria explaining to them to not mention Ian's Sawsbuck or anything of strategic value. Plumeria then led them into the living room once again, where Ian realized he recognized even more of the ASF members: There in front of him stood Lana, Hau, and Kiawe who were smiling and deep in conversation with Selene. Neat.

Gladion was notably absent until Anabel groaned and disappeared from sight for a few moments before coming back. "They'll be in shortly," Anabel announced.

Hau's cheery smile and voice broke the awkwardness for the new arrivals. "We're kind of like the same, just different groups," Hau said with a chuckle. "I'm Hau by the way."

"Kinda the same yo," Tupp said. "But we got a Faller who came out of an Ultra Storm just a few weeks back."

Plumeria gave Tupp a tense look but seemed pleased enough with Tupp not disclosing anything more.

"We have one of those too!" Hau replied back cheerfully.

Gladion's voice was heard from beyond the room. "...you gotta put Charmeleon away."

A feminine grunt answered, and Ian watched as Gladion was hand in hand with a young woman that made him cough in surprise. This woman wore an ASF uniform, but her face looked oddly familiar and Ian felt a sudden tension in his chest. He shook his head as he realized he recognized the young woman's face and hair. That looks like Suzy… like my ex-girlfriend from my world. This can't be real. This can't be happening… Ian gasped as he realized it truly was the mirror image of his ex-girlfriend and he felt an intense pain in his chest. He suddenly noticed the Charmeleon that had followed her in, but it didn't have red scales, instead it had shiny yellow ones.

Ian didn't realize Gladion had started speaking. "...and this is my girlfriend, Suzy-Marie. She came out of an Ultra Storm a little over three weeks ago."

No, no, no, no! Plumeria's head turned on a swivel to Ian, and Ian's jaw dropped as his brain short-circuited. It wasn't until Suzy made eye contact with Ian that he felt able to speak. He pointed at the newcomer with anger in his voice and her arm mirrored his, with them both pointing at each other and shouting:

"WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING HERE!?"

Hey there! Figured I'd squeeze in a final review and hit up this fic! Welcome to TR. I do want to preface my review by saying I can personally find isekai's a bit... not to my taste. I'll make every effort not to let this color my reviews, but I do want to be up front, just in case I mention tropes I don't jives with and such. Also as an aside, if you feel inclined its become common on the forums to list on the summary what kind of critical feedback you prefer. You're not obligated to but it does help if you ever want to discourage heavy crit. Onto the actual review!

First of, WOW I have to say, I adore this concept. Legends Arceus concept but in modern day Alola with Ultra Storms in place of distortions and fallers everywhere and crazy Alpha's with adash of post apoc vibes?? Amazing. It's honestly peak and I can even see why it would mesh well with the isekai idea, since fallers are a canon concept within Alola.

The opening setup is pretty solid. It was cool to give us a small glimpse into Ian's personal life, then rugpull that from under him. Builds some sympathy, at least for me it did. The absolute despicableness and tragedy of him saving to buy an engagement ring and Suzy does that??? geez luise. She and Alex are scumbags and can go kick rocks. Can't blame him for just dipping immediately and leaving, and telling his GM to stuff it :unquag: . I think the emotions and reactions in that bit especially were nicely portrayed, we can get a solid sense of how angry and upset and betrayed Ian feels.

It's pretty intriguing that there was a lunar eclipse the night the isekai happened, makes me wonder if Lunala shenanigans were involved in him getting yoinked. Throwing him right into the thick of things in a way is cool. Alpha Nidoking is terrifying. Poor Primeape man... Also intriguing that both objects and random pokemon fall through these things. They sound even worse than Distortions in a way.

I can already feel the fun banter and bro vibes from Skull, and it seems like they're the sort of scrappy "looking out for survivors" faction which is pretty cool. FIts well with what we see in the games and makes sense that they'd reluctantly rise up in the wake of the governments apparently deciding not to do anything. Which is. Super rude lol. Guess this pokemon world isnt terribly hunky dory.

Skull was surprisingly accepting, especially Tupp, seems like they're used to this. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of their interactions, learning what Selene is doing here and hopefully developing a cool friendship between Tupp and Ian, since they seem to be getting along. Also curious to see how he'll continue to keep up his lie about his origins and being a pokemon trainer.

It is genuinely always fun to see how isekai protags adapt to the videogame vs "real life" dynamics and how hard it would actually be to train pokemon if you weren't from that world. I hope he struggles a lot, its always fun to see them make a lot of errors and learn.

Overall this fic actually was pretty captivating. There's an original plot and cool concept, and a baked in justification for it using an isekai over native protag. Definitely might try to read more casually if I have a chance!

I do have some more concrit stuff. I'll tuck these under a spoiler in case you don't want em. I know how exhausting constant chapter 1 commentary can be, as well as crit, so feel free to ignore if you're not feeling it.

He watched the teenage new hire walk out of the kitchen, and the 6'2 supervisor with brown hair and slim build sighed in frustration as he scanned the kitchen again, seeing how much he still had to do.
I think this way of describing him is unnecessary and felt kind of clunky. I definitely understand the desire to establish a protagonists looks early but this interrupted the story for me.

Especially given we describe his height a little later in a way that felt more reasonable. Personally I always find it more ffective to break apart descriptions if its not in context. "I dusted flour from my hair, turning it from white back to its natural brown."
Later you mention he hasn't jogged since track, so you can mention his lean build, and bringing up his height in relation to Nidoking makes more sense.
Through the flour stains, the words "Prince Street Pizza" spelled out in yellow across his chest. He wore a black baseball cap and a pair of blue jeans to complete the uniform.
Her uniform was the same, black hat, jeans, and a black shirt that instead of flour was wet from washing dishes.
Another bit of description that felt clunky, especially the bit about the cap and jeans. I don't think this will come up at all later since he's gonna get yoinked, so I kind of didn't care what she was wearing since she's presumably not showing back up. I think you could probably just not mention these?

Personally at least unless its my main character and their 'signature' outfit I dont take a lot of interest in clothing.
Ian dropped his towel and leaned in to give the cute brunette with glasses a kiss. She held a hand up and shook her head.
Also no need to describe her as a cute brunette this way, felt a little stiff to call her a cute brunette. That said I do get wanting to establish appearance and I think there's ways to work it in more seamlessly. Ex:

She help up a hand as she paused to wipe dishwater from her glasses. "No kisses at work!"

Just a broad idea of what I mean. Not a huge deal, just a bit awkward imo.

ALSO WOW RICH SUZY. Jerk. you had no problem being all over Alex
Ian groaned as he began searching the pizza place's back area for it when he heard a feminine giggle and poked his head around the corner, seeing something that didn't register for a moment: Alex embracing Suzy, his hand squeezing her backside, their lips pressed together-

"Ian!" Suzy cried out in horror as she separated from their muscular co-worker.
First of all, WOW YOU JERKS

Second of all, WOW are you stupid??? Its not a big pizza shop how'd you expect to get away with this you raging snot weasels. jerks.
"It was just a prank bro!" Alex called after him.
Will it be a prank when I fill your pillowcases with jello and melt your silverware, Alex?
"Fuck the promotion," he uttered and promptly hung u
Yeah not a smart move but I feel you Ian
Suzy gave me so much shit for still playing Pokemon games...
Red flag bro, never date a girl who doesn't like pokemon.... Ngl it sucks but she did him a favor, she would have been an awful girlfriend lol
A large, purple, spiky creature standing upright was nearly twenty feet away from him, looking significantly taller than Ian's own 6'2 form and had to have a few hundred pounds on him.
Yeah see this height descriptor here worked a lot better for me personally
Seeing Pokemon hand drawn in the typical anime art style hadn't prepared him for something that looked far more realistic
I do enjoy him mentally comparing the pokemon in from of him to the anime artstyle. Also I sort of expected him to maybe observe more detail, like scales or plate armor?
He nearly stumbled as he came off his bed and onto solid ground, breaking into an unsteady run
Oh shoot his whole bed came with him?? Kinda nifty
Ian looked around to see if he was still relatively safe, also to gauge if there was a water source nearby he could potentially get these Pokemon to.
Awww :(. Its sweet that he tried to find a way to get him to safety even if it failed, shows what kind of a character he is.
Is this Plumeria from the Sun and Moon games?

A long, skinny, black form scurried closer to Ian and he recoiled in fear. The realistic looking lizard got up on its hind legs and bared its teeth, steam rising from its mouth. Is that a Salazzle?
I think what I keep getting tripped up on with these realizations is that they all have the same sentence structure and cadence. "Is that [X] from [X]?"

Finding ways to vary his shocked reactions will probably help smooth it over.
"Plumeria from Sun and Moon?"

"Wait... a living breathing Salazzle?"
But whatever discomfort in his armpits, back, and legs with the uphill march faded as he got to drink in the view from the top of the hill.
Aww I sort of hoped for a couple extra sentences of description here of the view.
"And I'm Selene.
Oh shoot Selene is team skull in this? neat
Rapp giggled. "Some fat guy with glasses. He started celebrating and shit. When we told him to chill out, he said he was some weird ass word. What'd he say, Tupp?"

Tupp smirked. "Girl he was like, 'I'mma e-si-guy protagonist' and he had special powers and that we should listen to him," Tupp explained with a laugh.

E-si-guy protagonist? What is- And then it hit him: some otaku from a world like his with the Isekai genre of shows had wormhole'd in. "What happened to him, is he still around?" Ian asked warily.
AHAHAH this is funny. Highly amused by the notion that some isekai guy also got here before Ian and immediately died.

No need to apologize for giving constructive criticism! I just wish I’d gotten it earlier so I would’ve been able to tackle things months ago. I really do appreciate the critiques as I’m always trying to improve as a writer, and the fact that something I wrote is drawing so much thought from someone that isn’t me is very flattering and humbling. The one thing I have going for me (hopefully) is Chapter 1’s main draft was written a year ago, and I like to think I’ve improved dramatically as a writer since then. A lot of the specific lines I wrote I see a lot of flaws in now, but I love getting a different set of eyes to come in and tell me what’s landing, what’s not landing, what’s dumb, etc.

I’m very proud of this concept as I worked really hard on it. No island challenge, no gym journey, just factional warfare on a chaotic island full of mysteries. The initial inspiration was “Sengoku Jidai on Ula’Ula Island.” Having the “ee-si-guy” character is my way of basically telling the reader this isn’t going to be a normal Isekai story. I hate the normal tropes and shallow power fantasies that many Isekai stories end up doing, and this story was largely conceived with poking fun at those tropes.

No worries if you’re unable to continue going further with this story, us writers always have way too much bouncing around our heads. I noticed the Tyrantrum in your bio… I think you’ll end up liking where Ian’s team goes if you end up going further with this story. Regardless, thank you so much for the thoughtful comments, praise, and criticism.

Chapter 24 Suzy-Marie

For a single moment, both Team Skull and the ASF members were completely frozen in shock as Ian and Suzy-Marie's faces contorted with anger. Ian took the initiative first though. "What the hell are you so mad about? You're the one that cheated on me!" Ian spat.

Suzy-Marie's jaw dropped. "The fucking audacity! When you're the one that cheated on me!" Suzy-Marie exclaimed.

"That's bullshit and you know it!" Ian roared as he began storming over to Suzy-Marie, only to be held back by Plumeria and Tupp. Suzy-Marie's shiny Charmeleon stared daggers at Ian and Gladion got in between Ian and Suzy-Marie with a scowl on his face.

"Ian, I know you're mad, but we need to chill!" Plumeria ordered between her teeth.

"Of course a scumbag like you joins the evil fucking team!" Suzy-Marie sneered.

Ian shook his head, Tupp's hold forcing Ian back a step. "Scumbag am I? That's what you like! That's why you were making out with Alex at work!"

Suzy-Marie cringed, completely thrown off. "Making out with Alex? I'm not gay, you were making out with her!"

"Alex is a du-" Ian froze as the realization hit him. Oh shit, are we from different universes? Ian's tense face relaxed a bit as he noticed the girl across from him was having the same realization.

"What. The. Fuck?" Selene yelled out as she'd put it together as well.

Craig Palmer cleared his throat and got in the middle. "I think it's best everyone goes outside," Craig said firmly.

"Consider it done," Plumeria said, forcefully guiding Ian to the sliding glass door. Ian felt his blood boiling and his heartbeat beginning to slow as he started taking deep breaths. Of all of the people in all of existence, SHE gets sent here? This has to be some sick joke. Ian opened the door and Plumeria stopped pushing him, letting him step onto the grass.

"Doing okay, Ian?" Plumeria asked delicately.

"I have no idea," Ian said and exhaled loudly. "Wow…"

"That's rough Ian," Selene chimed in.

Ian nodded, still shocked and in utter disbelief. "You're telling me."

Tupp patted Ian on the back. "You did good bro," he offered. "Woulda' loved to see you kick that blonde pretty boy's ass."

"Tupp, not now," Plumeria growled before turning to Ian. "So I've put together that's her."

Ian nodded. "Yeah."

"Tupp, stay here, I need to talk to Coogz real quick," Plumeria said, motioning with her head for Ian to get away from the group. Once a good twenty feet away, Plumeria put her hand on his shoulder. "Thank you for not going any further in there," Plumeria said. "I wasn't sure what to do but I couldn't let a fight break out with them or everything's fucked."

Ian nodded. "I know, but this is just so weird."

Plumeria nodded. "This is just completely fucked for you Ian, I'm sorry this happened at all."

"Thanks."

"We can get going if that'd be better for you," Plumeria said.

Ian shook his head. "If she's like me, which it sure seems like she is, we need to have a talk in private about those things."

Plumeria sighed. "You probably do… Should I listen?"

Ian shook his head once more. "Probably a lot of stuff you don't want to know."

Plumeria nodded. "Okay. I trust you Ian. But if you feel like an incident is gonna break out-"

"It won't," Ian promised. "There's too much at stake to let her fuck things up for me again."

"Okay, good," Plumeria said before a mischievous smile came across her face. "I'm still naming that punching bag after her."

Ian chuckled and gave his squad leader a genuine smile. "Thanks Plumeria."

"Hey Big Sis! That Anabel chick's out here!" Tupp called over.

The duo turned to see Anabel flanked by Gladion and Suzy-Marie approaching the grouping of Team Skull members. "Plumeria, can you and I have a private word?" Anabel asked.

"Sure!" Plumeria called back harshly before giving Ian a look. "I'll be back." Plumeria strode over to Anabel matter-of-factly and the two leaders talked lowly for a couple minutes as everyone else looked on. When Anabel offered Plumeria her hand, Plumeria shook it, and Plumeria made her way back to Ian. "She wants to talk to you in private. Out of earshot but where we can still see you two."

"Good," Ian said.

"No Pokemon," Plumeria said, pointing at his belt.

"Fine," Ian said as he quickly undid his belt and handed it to Plumeria. Plumeria then turned to Anabel's direction and held up the belt, and Anabel indicated for Suzy-Marie to do the same. Once Anabel had Suzy-Marie's belt secured, she held it up as well.

"Okay, good luck Ian," Plumeria said, sending him off with a pat on the back.

Ian exhaled deeply as he stepped calmly away from the ranch house and a decent way closer to the barn, eyeing Suzy-Marie cautiously. She largely did the same until she stopped and signaled him to come closer.

Ian hesitantly walked over to her, hands at his side and heart thumping. No matter how much he told himself that this wasn't the girl who'd cheated on him and had left him an emotional wreck, looking at her just made him angry. As he got a better look at her though, he noticed a few special things besides her ASF uniform. She had a prominent white bracelet with a dark red crystal on it and Ian realized it looked like Plumeria's Z-Ring. Lucky. She didn't wear a hat, instead her brown hair was down and tied in a pony tail. She still wore glasses, but they looked different than he'd remembered. Oh yeah, those probably didn't travel through. Lastly he noticed a very distinct accessory in her hair. It was shaped like a flower with a black and white center, but each petal had a different color of the rainbow. Oh wait, isn't that the Rainbow Badge you get for beating the Celadon City Gym? That's kinda random.

"So…" Suzy-Marie began.

"Weird, ain't it?" Ian asked, a little tenseness in his voice than he would've liked.

"So weird," Suzy-Marie said. Just hearing her voice again is so fucking nerve-racking.

Ian took a deep breath and figured he should offer an olive branch. "So just to get it out of the way, the me from your world cheated on you, right?"

"Yeah," Suzy-Marie replied. "And it sounds like the me from your world cheated on you?"

Ian nodded. "Yeah. Good then… So, can we just acknowledge that even though it wasn't you who did the cheating, I'm still kinda pissy at you, even though I shouldn't be," Ian explained.

"That's fair. I am too."

"Okay, now that we got that out of the way…" Ian began before looking over to Anabel and Plumeria, spectating next to each other. "Video game world."

"You were the Pokemon fan in the relationship?" Suzy-Marie asked.

"Yeah. I take it you were too?" Ian asked.

"Yeah," Suzy-Marie said. "You come out of an Ultra Storm as well?"

"Yup," Ian said. "Have you told anyone about where you're from?"

Suzy-Marie nodded with a big smile. "Just Gladion and Anabel, oh and Ms. Barazaki."

"Who's that?" Ian asked.

"She's my mentor," Suzy-Marie said. "But I'm not supposed to talk about her. Have you told anyone about where you're from?"

Ian grimaced. "Just Plumeria, and that was pretty recent."

"That's cool," Suzy-Marie said, then she gave him a big smile. "So isn't this like a dream come true?"

Ian gulped. "I definitely wouldn't call my experience that…"

"Really? That's too bad. When I woke up in the Ultra Storm, this Charmander came out of an Ultra Wormhole all scared. I used a berry to lure it over to me. We've been inseparable ever since," Suzy-Marie explained.

"Oh, the shiny Charmander that's now a Charmeleon?" Ian asked.

Suzy-Marie smiled proudly. "That's her. I was wandering around the Ultra Storm, not sure what was going on and then a Riolu came up to us all scared too. So naturally he joined us as well."

Riolu? You've gotta be kidding me. "Well that's lucky," Ian said, a hint of envy in his voice. "What was the Alpha in your Ultra Storm?"

Suzy giggled excitedly. "It was a Luvdisc! All just flopping around helplessly with its red eyes. Such a harmless Alpha. I guess I should ask though, how was your emergence?"

Ian shook his head, a laugh escaping his lips. "Not at all like that…" Ian closed his eyes, remembering the moment he woke up in the Ultra Storm. Oh shit, there was a deer with a flower? Was that Deerling what would become mine? I think it was. "But I woke up, and I think I saw a Deerling run by…"

"A Deerling?" Suzy-Marie said before falling into a laughing fit. "It's a good thing you didn't catch it, those things are supposed to be useless."

Ian scowled. Well this is officially the first time in this conversation I've wanted to smack the shit out of her. He unclenched his fist and something came to him. "Are you from Elk Grove too?"

"Yup! Laguna Park Drive?" Suzy-Marie asked.

Ian nodded. "And let me guess, in your world I lived on Cresleigh Ranch?"

Suzy-Marie's jaw dropped in amazement. "Yeah! So that means I lived there in your world? Was us being Pokemon fans really because of the house we grew up in?"

"That shouldn't make sense, but it kinda does," Ian said.

"I got into it because the next door neighbor, Michaela, showed me her Pokemon cards," Suzy-Marie explained.

Ian chuckled. "It was a Michael for me, but yeah, same idea."

"Okay, back to your story. You got Deerling out of the way-" Suzy-Marie began giggling more at the mere mention of Deerling. "What next?"

Second time. "So I saw an Alpha Nidkoking. Then a Primeape went up to attack it and I think Nidoking killed it and started eating it."

"Are you serious?" Suzy-Marie asked in disbelief. "That sure didn't happen in the games."

"I thought the same thing." Almost word for word as a matter of fact. Are we like the same person?

"So you didn't just have Pokemon to join you all willy-nilly?" Suzy-Marie asked.

"No. I had to catch them. I almost died doing it as a matter of fact," Ian said, remembering how Guzma's Ariados had him by its String Shot on his second day. "One of my Pokemon was still trying to kill me and eat me until this morning."

"I must truly be blessed then," Suzy-Marie said with a shrug. "It's funny, I started thinking that maybe I'm like one of those overpowered Isekai protagonists, just without the 'truck running me over' part," Suzy-Marie said with a giggle. If I could roll my eyes any harder they'd come out of my head. "Okay, I got a fun one for you. Who was the first person you laid eyes on when you got out of the Ultra Storm?"

Ian shook his head but cracked a smile all the same. "Plumeria. I was still figuring out the fog wall thing when she screamed 'Faller' at me."

"Oh… that's not nearly as romantic as mine. Wanna guess who the first person I laid eyes on was?" Suzy-Marie asked.

Ian rolled his eyes once more, expecting another insufferable answer. "Lemme guess…" Ian croaked, not even feigning interest.

"Gladion…" Suzy-Marie said reverently. "He was scouting near the Ultra Storm and there he was and… I hate to say it, but it was like love at first sight."

What is that, a few hours after getting cheated on? That's gotta be a record.

"I mean, I was still really hurt because you- I mean my world's Ian cheated, but there was something special about that moment," Suzy-Marie explained, her eyes suddenly filling with wonder. "It was like the stars aligned…"

"No offense, but I didn't agree to this conversation to hear about how great your new boyfriend is," Ian said bluntly.

"Okay fine. But like, I don't think you get it. Gladion's the son of the Aethers, they're worth billions. With a 'B,'" Suzy-Marie explained. "They're like royalty in Alola."

"So what you're saying is you're basically dating a prince?" Ian said, not trying to hide his laughter that followed. "Good for you, but that's not why we're talking right now."

"Sounds like someone's a little jealous actually," Suzy-Marie teased, voice full of sass. "But who wouldn't be? You're not a prince, not even close. Even if you were one, what would you be, the 'Prince of Po Town?'" Suzy-Marie said as she began cackling at her own bad joke. Third time. She laughed so hard she snorted and suddenly shook the laughter out of herself, making sure it didn't happen again.

"Real funny," Ian croaked.

"Someone's not happy," Suzy-Marie observed. "Have you gotten over me- or well, your world's me yet?" Suzy-Marie asked with a little too much honey in her voice. Four.

"Full disclosure? I think I did move on. But hearing you talk about how easy and nice everything's been for you is starting to piss me off a bit," Ian explained.

"But Ian, it's just like the games. Everyone here's so nice," Suzy-Marie explained. "Like, even when Charmeleon and I go into a total stranger's house and ask if there's anything they can give us, they always give us stuff. The Major says I shouldn't do it, but you seriously haven't tried it?"

"If there even was much stuff to take in Po Town, I wouldn't. But what you're doing sounds more like armed robbery," Ian fired back. There is something seriously wrong with this bitch.

"Of course you think that," Suzy-Marie said with a scoff. Some inspiration hit her suddenly and she giggled mischievously. "You know, if everything's going my way, that must mean I'm the Isekai protagonist and you're the antagonist. You're already on the evil team already-"

"Evil team?" Ian fired back in disgust, and the anger that he'd done so well to contain was finally let out. "Hell no! We take in Fallers and we give them shelter. What's fucking evil about that? Meanwhile the ASF sends aid to Surge and a monster like Breon."

"Looks like I struck a nerve," Suzy-Marie taunted.

"Yeah you did. We did all of that even though we were on the verge of starvation!" Ian retorted disdainfully.

"Starvation? I bet Guzma's just hoarding all of the aid you guys get," Suzy-Marie replied.

"Aid? What fucking aid? We don't get shit from you guys!" Ian accused.

"Aid convoys go by The Gap Bridge every three weeks. Are you trying to tell me none of them go across the bridge to Po Town?" Suzy-Marie demanded.

"The Gap Bridge? That's shit's been destroyed!" Ian fired back.

"What? It's on all the maps-"

"I have personally seen the ruins Surge left behind. We had to use a Toucannon to fly across The Gap," Ian explained, still in utter disbelief that this was a real person he was talking to. She's a Faller, but there's so much wrong with her. At the beginning of this conversation it was like we were almost the same person. Does having everything handed to you on a silver platter start doing things to your head?

"Hey, you're getting pretty hostile with my girl!" Anabel called from a distance. "Do you need to be separated?"

"No," Ian called back, trying to keep the anger out of his voice. "I'm just trying to explain that there are places on this island that don't get any help from the rest of Alola."

"Well, do it more calmly then!" Anabel fired back.

"Fine!" Ian said.

"Any other places besides Po Town that are starving?" Suzy-Marie asked, slightly mockingly.

"Makamae Town," Ian scowled, but answered calmly.

"What? Now you're just making stuff up, there's no town like that on our maps," Suzy-Marie replied arrogantly.

"It's an old mining town that was abandoned a while back. A pretty interesting group of people live up there now," Ian said.

"Interesting?" Suzy-Marie asked dismissively. "What is it, some group that worships the Ultra Rift or something?"

Ian shook his head, a cocky smirk forming on his lips. "Besides refugees from Haina Town?" Ian paused for dramatic effect, enjoying Suzy-Marie's skeptical look a bit too much. "The Pearl Clan."

"What? You're joking with me."

"Irida, Lian, Gaeric, Palina," Ian listed off. "Even Ingo's there with them.

"Ingo?" Suzy-Marie said in shock. "Why didn't you bring him here? We could get him to his brother!"

Ian shook his head. "He doesn't want to go yet."

"But that's his family, his real one, not the Pearl Clan people he ended up with," Suzy-Marie justified.

Ian cringed, realizing a slight bit of hypocrisy in his supposed counterpart. "He said he wanted to make sure the Pearl Clan was okay before looking for his brother."

"And you let him?" Suzy-Marie demanded.

"Of course I did," Ian said, trying not to sound completely repulsed even though he was. "Okay, thought experiment. Imagine it comes out that your mom from your world showed up in this one too, but she showed up in the Galar region. What would you do?"

"I'd go see her, it's not hard," Suzy-Marie said.

Ian shook his head. "But imagine that when you leave, there's a very good chance you can't come back."

"Well I'd go anyways."

Ian was taken aback. "What about your Aether prince over there? Would you leave him behind?"

"Of course not, he'd come to meet my mom. He's actually loyal."

Ian shook his head. "Imagine you can't. Like Ingo can't take his comrades in the Pearl Clan, and he can't go back there if he leaves. What do you do then?"

Ian saw, if only for a moment that the lightbulb in her head had turned on. But she scowled a moment later before opening her mouth once more in anger. "This is all so stupid. Ingo should be allowed to reunite with his brother Emett and you got in the way."

"It's a lot more complicated than that-"

"No it's not. Just because you showed up and joined Team Skull doesn't mean everyone has to be as miserable as you are. I almost feel bad for you," Suzy-Marie said, her voice wreaking of arrogance.

"The feeling's mutual," Ian said.

"Real funny, smartass. It's pretty surprising how stupid you turned out to be. At the beginning of this conversation I thought we were basically the same person showing up in this world. But it turns out you just overthink everything. Newsflash Ian, this is the Pokemon world. Everything's much simpler here," Suzy-Marie explained mockingly.

It's weird, I don't even want to hit her anymore, I pity her. "You go on thinking that," he said, realizing nothing good would come of the conversation going forward.

Suzy-Marie laughed dismissively and turned to leave. "See you around then."

Ian crossed his arms, watching Suzy-Marie start marching back to Anabel when an epiphany came to him. What was that term those youtube critics would throw around? Oh wait- "It's perfect," Ian said under his breath. "Hey Isekai protagonist!" Ian called with a mocking grin.

"What?" Suzy-Marie demanded.

"You know, I think I figured out what you are, Suzy," Ian stated.

"I don't know about the 'me' from your world, but I go by Suzy-Marie, thank you very much," Suzy-Marie corrected him arrogantly.

"Suzy-Marie…" Ian gasped as the epiphany hit him even harder. Oh shit, that has gotta be some sick joke. "You're a Mary Sue!"

Suzy-Marie gasped in horror. "No, no I'm not!" She whined. "I don't even know what you're talking about!"

Ian started laughing and shaking his head in disbelief. "It's basically your fucking name already!" Ian cackled even harder. "It sure seems like you're handed everything. Love at first sight with some 'charming' prince, a shiny starter, a Riolu, and lemme guess, you have a Legendary Pokemon too just to round it all out?"

"You're ridiculous Ian! I think you're just mad because my Ultra Storm put me on the good side of the island, not the shitty one like yours did!" Suzy-Marie justified.

"I'd take the shitty side every time if it meant I never turn into whatever the fuck you are!" Ian snarled.

"Alright, cut it out, both of you!" Anabel called out as she got next to Suzy-Marie. "Plumeria, go get your guy."

Ian caught Plumeria with a hint of a smirk on her face even from twenty feet. Plumeria's proud smile widened as she neared Ian. "So you can get mad at someone besides me? I'm almost jealous."

Ian shook his head, unable to resist cracking an amused smile. "That was fucking weird."

"So did you learn anything useful?" Plumeria asked.

Ian rolled his eyes. "No. Not at all. Unless you count her bragging as useful."

"So was that whole conversation pointless?" Plumeria asked.

Ian shrugged. "Probably?" He paused as a thought, or more a conviction crossed his mind. "Okay, not actually. It's bizarre, because she's basically living in some fantasy-world, talking about how perfect and simple everything is…" Ian said, trying to put the feeling nagging at his mind into words. "It's like, I'm feeling validated all of the sudden. Like all of the bullshit I've dealt with since I got here, all the struggles, all the trials, like all of it feels worth it now."

Plumeria eyed him skeptically. "You sure about that?"

"Yeah. So, at the start, it was like we'd lived each other's lives up until we showed up here. Almost like we were the same person…" Ian reflected, struggling to find the right word to label his conviction. "But her, she's been given her every wish, and nothing ever goes wrong."

"Like she's in the video games you two played?" Plumeria asked as she held Ian's belt of Poke Balls out.

"Almost exactly that, it's freaky," Ian said as he buckled the belt on his person.

Plumeria turned to observe Anabel, Gladion, and Suzy-Marie, then shook her head. "She's almost crying. Ian, let me be the first to say I'm very glad you're not a baby like that."

"Thanks."

"I think Anabel knows where you're from. She didn't say much, but she was trying to hint at some 'secret knowledge' you might know," Plumeria explained.

"Suzy-Marie says she told her and Gladion, and some other random chick. What'd you tell Anabel?"

"I didn't acknowledge it," Plumeria said.

"Yo Ian, Plumeria!" Tupp called out. "Craig's saying we can come inside and eat, ASF will go after us."

"C'mon, let's get away from this BS," Plumeria said, putting her hand on his shoulder.

***
It was like a royal feast, with what he assumed was the Pokemon world equivalent of flank steak being served up, with mashed taters and some green gravy that didn't look appealing but tasted like a dream. With some greens and freshly squeezed juice to wash it down, Ian figured he hadn't eaten so well since he'd arrived in Alola. It must be even crazier for the rest of Team Skull. Having an actual home-cooked meal after three weeks of varying levels of slop had to be a dream come true. When Kathy came in to check on how the Team Skull members were enjoying their meal, Ian thought they were going to tackle her with the most exuberant hug of all time.

When Craig checked in, Ian approached him away from the table. "So, my apologies on that blow up in there," he said to the rancher. "It shouldn't have happened in your home like that."

Craig shook his head and offered his hand. "Hau explained it pretty well, it involved some pretty extraordinary circumstances."

Ian shook it with a relieved smile. "Thank you for understanding sir, and thanks for the meal. It was the best any of us have had in a while."

"Kathy told me," Craig said with a big grin on his bearded face before he turned to address the rest of the members who were still enjoying their feast. "I haven't seen my wife smile that big in a long time. I appreciate the kind words more than you know."

A cacophony of sound erupted from the table until Plumeria shooshed them. Tupp used the silence to speak up. "When this Ultra Rift stuff's done I wanna come work here. All you gotta do is pay me with more of Ms. Kathy's cooking."

Craig chuckled. "Well, as long as the Alolan government doesn't start enforcing minimum wage laws again I think that can be arranged," Craig chuckled some more at his own joke. "But in all seriousness, come on back anytime. We look forward to doing more business with you guys."

Plumeria nodded. "I'm not sure when it'll be, it's been quite a trip getting over here."

"Understandable," Craig said. "But feel free to use the Driftwood Guild to communicate stuff or even use it as a small courier. I might be able to send some stuff your way so you don't have to travel across the island for something small."

Plumeria grimaced. "We'll have to consider it." That's her very polite way of saying no.

When each Team Skull member had full bellies and had personally thanked Kathy once more for the wonderful food, the squad cleared out. Ian was the first out the door, with the ASF squad glaring daggers at him. Ian noticed Suzy-Marie was on the side talking to Colress of all people. He noticed Colress point at Suzy Marie's hair accessory and his creepy smile grew incredibly wide. Into a sort of knowing smirk? For what? The Rainbow Badge? Has he ever taken notice of a fashion accessory?

"Hey Ian," Anabel said as she approached, her arms folded. "We had a little idea since you and Suzy-Marie need to blow off some steam."

"What?" Ian asked, sensing Plumeria had stopped right behind him.

"We were thinking you two could let out all of those bad feelings with a little Pokemon battle. Something like a three versus three?"

"No thanks," Plumeria said, putting her hand on Ian's shoulder to guide him away from the potential confrontation.

"Plumeria, no," Ian said decisively, turning to Anabel, his blood running hot with determination. "You're on."

Chapter 25: Reveal New

Oceanside Lowlife

Bug Catcher
Chapter 25 Reveal

A good half hour had passed since Anabel had offered the challenge and led her ASF members inside to have lunch. Ian waited at a spot that seemed like a good place for a battle considering it was a couple hundred feet in between the barn and the ranch house. An almost eerie calmness had swept over Ian, something that even surprised him a little. His fellow team members had given him some space for the time being, letting him focus on the upcoming battle until Plumeria made her way over to him, a serious look on her face.

"What's going on?" Ian asked.

Plumeria sighed. "I really don't want to have to have this conversation, cuz I want you to win almost as badly as you do."

Ian shook his head. "I highly doubt that."

"Hopefully I'll never be in your shoes right now, and it really hurts me to tell you this…"

"What?" Ian asked.

Plumeria cringed like she was in pain. "Don't use Sawsbuck."

"Oh come on," Ian fired back."She needs to be taught a lesson."

Plumeria sighed. "I'm sure you're right, but this whole battle thing is just an excuse to scout you. That Anabel chick's smart and everything she sees will go back to the ASF. They probably already have a profile on that chick, and if there's someone just like her in an opposing faction, they're not going to leave that alone."

"Plumeria, they're on the other side of the island. We're not gonna have to deal with them," Ian said.

Plumeria rolled her eyes. "Not now, not next month, but if someone takes out Breon and the ASF retake Haina Town? Po Town will be next," Plumeria sighed. "I really hate asking this of you Ian. But I bet you can still beat her without Sawsbuck anyways."

Ian grimaced. "So if I can't use Sawsbuck and Tyrunt's not following orders, that leaves Wartortle, Pyroar, and Sandshrew."

"Watching how Sandshrew beats the crap out of Tyrunt has to inspire some confidence," Plumeria offered.

"Sandshrew's Ice and Steel Type, doubly weak to her Charmeleon and Riolu," Ian said. "Who knows what else she has."

Plumeria's head looked to the ground, clearly unhappy about her request. "You said she's been given everything. Meanwhile you've struggled, fought, almost died multiple times, saved lives…" Plumeria said, shaking her head. "And kicking your ex-girlfriend's ass in front of her teammates would feel really good I'm sure, and you deserve it more than anyone else here. But revealing your Sawsbuck in a battle that in the grand scheme of things isn't going to matter-"

"It matters to me," Ian fired back as he noticed Craig approaching from the ranch house, with the ASF members still filing out well behind him. "But we got company."

Plumeria turned to the ranch house and cursed. She then turned to Ian pleadingly. "Please…"

Ian scowled. "No promises."

Plumeria cursed as she turned back around. The ASF members had begun to approach with Suzy-Marie leading the way. "Hey Team Skull, get over here!" Plumeria barked angrily. The three other members hustled over quickly and got behind Ian, with Tupp squeezing Ian's shoulders to pump him up.

"Okay, I know we're all excited to see Ian kick the crap out of this bitch," Plumeria said harshly. "But Sawsbuck can't be mentioned, got it?"

"But Big Sis, that's his best Pokemon!" Tupp said loudly.

"Yeah!" Selene and Rapp added in.

"I know," Plumeria said, voice full of regret. "But we're playing the long game here. If we ever end up fighting them, we don't need them knowing Sawsbuck's one of the strongest Pokemon in Po Town's arsenal."

"Really?" Ian asked skeptically. "No one's acted like that until now."

"That'll change, I promise you," Plumeria said. "I know you said no promises Ian, but please-"

"This is such a ridiculous ask," Ian said.

Plumeria grimaced, going silent as the bearded Craig Palmer approached them, the ASF members still a ways back. "I've been appointed the referee of the match," Craig announced.

Ian nodded. "Sounds good."

Craig then leaned in close and began whispering. "I'm rooting for you though. That girl trashed Kathy's cooking."

"That's it, no one does that to Ms. Kathy! I'm whoopin' some ass," Tupp declared as he smacked his fist into his palm.

"Tupp, no you're not!" Plumeria barked.

Craig smiled proudly. "I appreciate the sentiment."

Craig then took a step back as the ASF trainers plus Colress got to the other end of the makeshift battlefield and eyed Ian intensely, except for Hau who sported a big grin. At least he seems alright. Craig motioned for the ASF group to come over, and they moved as one, with Colress closely following outside of the little group.

"Ian, Suzy-Marie?" Craig asked.

"Hey look, it's the Prince of Po Town," Suzy-Marie teased as she took her place across Ian.

"What?" Tupp asked aloud.

"Huh?" Selene said, completely bewildered.

"Funny," Ian said. "Hey look, it's a spoiled brat who's been handed everything, a shiny, a Riolu, who knows what else. Didn't even have to battle them."

"I'll have you know I'm a great battler too," Suzy-Marie said. "The best they've ever seen for someone who's only been around for three weeks."

I think I lost track of how many times I've wanted to punch her.

"Yo chick, you might be strong, but Ian's 'starteejic' and shit!" Tupp fired back.

"Sure he is," Suzy-Marie taunted.

"Okay, settle down everyone," Craig said, coming between the two future combatants. "This match will be three on three, no switching, and I will decide when a Pokemon is no longer able to fight. Is that clear?"

Ian nodded, with Suzy-Marie just shrugging before adding a quick "Duh."

Anabel cleared her throat. "My Espeon will provide the barrier." Anabel tossed a Poke Ball out and the pink mammalian Pokemon manifested with a moan.

"Trainers, shake hands and take your places," Craig instructed.

Ian's scowl held as he stood and offered his hand. Suzy-Marie shook it with an arrogant smirk. "Good luck Prince of Po Town, you're gonna need it," she added before turning around and leading the rest of her group to the far side of the makeshift battlefield.

Ian rolled his eyes as he heard the confused sounds of the rest of the Team Skull members. Colress stepped forward to Ian with his signature creepy grin. "I assume you're not going to use that stag of yours?" Colress said lowly when the ASF members were out of earshot.

"No he's not," Plumeria answered.

Ian shook his head. "I haven't decided yet, honestly."

"If you wish to keep that Pokemon hidden a bit longer, I will not speak of it," Colress said. "I owe you that much for indulging me."

"Thanks," Plumeria said. "See Ian, he doesn't think you should use it either."

"While I would like to see it in action once more before I leave…" Colress began. "...if you expect you may come to blows with them one day, I would wait to reveal your trump card, Ian."

"Hey, hurry it up over there!" Suzy-Marie called out.

Ian flipped her the bird and looked to the rest of his teammates, who started clapping and giving him words of encouragement. Ian walked to what would be a good spot rather slowly, but he felt the scowl on his face only intensify. His focus tightened as he took his spot a good thirty feet from Suzy-Marie.

Team Skull stood behind Craig in the middle on Ian's left, while the ASF took their place parallel to them. Anabel's Espeon became washed in pink Psychic Type Energy and a sudden translucent barrier surrounded the battlefield. Ian also noticed Anabel was watching him intensely with a notepad and pen in her hand. Plumeria was right.

"Ready?" Craig asked aloud.

"Yeah!" Suzy-Marie called out. "And I got a surprise for my first Pokemon! It usually takes three Pokemon to take it down-"

"Suzy-Marie, I said not to use that!" Anabel yelled angrily.

"You quiet down Major," Suzy-Marie demanded. "Or else I'll tell Ms. Barazaki about all the times I catch you checking me out. And you know how close she is to General Vetra."

Anabel froze. We both have bosses that nag us. I'd be tempted to laugh if I didn't want to kick her ass so badly.

Ian reached past Sawsbuck's Heal Ball on his belt, instead going for Pyroar's Poke Ball and held it out. "Reveal!" Craig ordered, raising both of his hands.

Pyroar manifested from its Poke Ball with a mighty roar, ruffling its mane majestically. Directly across from Pyroar manifested a black canine with green trim around its body. No fucking way! Ian's eyes widened as he realized he was locked in battle with something on a different level. She has ZYGARDE? I shouldn't be surprised.

Suzy-Marie giggled excitedly. "Like my Zy-doge? It's a good type matchup for me so you can just give up now!"

"You wish!" Ian roared, his eyes narrowing back on the battle at hand.

"Ready?" Craig called out, to which Ian nodded. "Begin!"

"Zygarde, Land's Wrath!"

"Prepare to jump!" Ian commanded, unsure of what to expect. Zygarde howled and became cloaked in light brown Ground Type Energy, it stuck its front legs into the earth and the Type Energy suddenly flowed into the earth. Suddenly a green hexagonal design appeared below Pyroar's paws. Pyroar quickly leapt as green, hexagonal cells appeared above the spot like a shark breaching the surface of the water. Pyroar had dodged it well, but Zygarde in its 10% Form was already charging ahead.

"Too easy, use Bite!" Suzy-Marie ordered.

Zygarde leapt to the air quickly to meet Pyroar, and Ian smiled wickedly as he covered his ears. "Hyper Voice!"

Pyroar took just a moment before firing off a wave of sound as loud as a fighter jet's sonic boom. The black and green wolf took the full brunt of a wall of Normal Type Energy, sending the canine shooting backwards with unreal speed as Ian's eyes closed as the horribly loud sound hit his ears. When the sound passed, Zygarde had just finished bouncing off Espeon's psychic barrier, clearly in pain.

Suzy-Marie's jaw dropped in disbelief as her vision turned from her Zygarde to Ian and Pyroar. Don't get cocky now, it was just one hit and that thing's a Legendary. Ian caught Anabel furiously scribbling something on to her notepad on the sidelines, while the Team Skull side had erupted in jubilant cheers.

Grimsley's advice of not using moves successively echoed in his mind. "Sometimes the reason's for rhythm, sometimes for power. Keep your opponent on their toes," Ian remembered Grimsley instructing.

"Noble Roar while it's down!" Ian called out, covering his ears once more. It's not nearly as loud as Hyper Voice, but my ears will appreciate it later I'm sure. Pyroar wound up another blast of sound, this time much more moderate. Pyroar took a little longer to channel this move, but its entire body glowed with Normal Type Energy for a few moments before letting out its roar.

Zygarde's 10% form struggled to get up, shaking off some obvious pain before it suddenly glowed with white Type Energy. Suzy-Marie growled angrily before yelling out: "You know what to do, Zygarde."

Around the black and green wolf Pokemon a green aura emanated for a moment until light blue Ice Type Energy vapor filled the air. Haze? Dammit. The misty vapor then disappeared as quickly as it had appeared, and when Ian looked to its source, expecting Zygarde's 10% form to be standing tall, instead there was nothing. "Pyroar, move!"

Suddenly a green hexagon manifested underneath Ian's proud lion and the wolf appeared, awash in light brown Ground Type Energy, smashing into Pyroar, sending the lion airborne as it wailed in pain before landing brutally on the ground.

Suzy-Marie laughed triumphantly. "Ready to give up?"

Ian didn't even acknowledge it, instead trying to will Pyroar up to his feet. His lion did so, clearly worse for wear though. Let's try to throw it off balance. "Ember!"

"Dig again then!" Suzy-Marie called out.

Pyroar fired off a small burst of fireballs at Zygarde, who was already in the ground before they would've reached the Legendary. Ian noticed a faint, green hexagonal outline streaking across the ground of the battlefield. "Pyroar, leap and-"

Pyroar took to the sky, already winding up another attack when Ian yelled "Hyper Voice!" Zygarde appeared out of the hexagonal light awash once more in Ground Type Energy when Ian covered his ears and watched as Pyroar unleashed a crushing burst of air, blasting Zygarde off its intended path and smashing it into the dirt.

Ian didn't smile or even want to brag, and he heard the faint cheers of his teammates. But instead he remained steadfastly focused on the battle at hand. "Let's finish it, another Hyper Voice!"

"Zygarde, Dig away!" Suzy-Marie called out desperately. Zygarde disappeared in a flash of green light as it took the form of the hexagon on the ground once more before re-appearing on the other side of the battlefield, looking just to be in just as bad a shape as Pyroar was.

"Wow, that's amazing!" Hau's voice called out. "Suzy-Marie, I've never seen Zygarde tested like this!"

"Shut up!" Suzy-Marie barked in frustration.

Tupp hollered happily. "And this ain't even Ian's best Pokemon!"

"Tupp, I swear!" Plumeria barked, smacking Tupp's arm.

She's probably going to try to stay at range now. One hit from Land's Wrath would do Pyroar in. She's gotta land it though.

"Zygarde, Glare!" Suzy-Marie commanded.

"Pyroar, look away!" Ian called out quickly. Pyroar turned its head to the ground, but Ian saw Suzy-Marie's lips move again, and Zygarde switched moves. Suddenly a burst of dark blue Type Energy came from Zygarde 10% form's mouth. Dragon Breath.

"Pyroar, dodge!" Ian called out. Pyroar's body got out of the way, but its tail had lingered just enough to get caught in a bit of Dragon Breath. Pyroar's body froze while mid-air, causing it to crash to the ground brutally. Are you kidding me? Just a hit on the tail can cause paralysis?

"End it, Land's Wrath!" Suzy-Marie ordered.

"Pyroar-" Ian called out in frustration as his proud lion struggled to move its legs. Suddenly green light flashed below it, and the green hexagon cells manifested, causing Ian's crippled Pyroar to wail in pain before collapsing. Damn it.

"Yeah, I think Dragon Breath causes paralysis one hundred percent of the time in this world!" Suzy-Marie called out with honey in her voice.

Ian remembered Tupp's fight with Vibrava and how Tupp's Golbat had taken a couple of glancing blows from Vibrava's Dragon Breath and not gotten paralyzed. More bullshit, I take it.

"Pyroar is unable to battle, send out your next Pokemon, Ian," Craig called out.

Ian grimaced, imagining how Sawsbuck would handle Zygarde in its 10% form, but he shook it off. Sandshrew would be good but then it would bring out Charmeleon or Riolu and she'd get the type advantage for my third Pokemon. Wartortle's better here. "Wartortle, let's go!" Ian called out as Wartortle's ball flew into the air. Wartortle manifested with an angry gurgle, glaring at the Legendary.

Suzy-Marie scoffed. "Of course you have a water starter to counter Charmeleon. Goes to show you're just the rival after all."

Ian's vision narrowed and Wartortle locked in as well. "Rapid Spin a little short!" Ian called out.

Wartortle launched itself at Zygarde before withdrawing into its shell and spinning into a frenzy. "Dragon Breath!" Suzy-Marie called out. Zygarde wound up another stream of dark blue Dragon TE and fired it. The tip of Wartortle's shell hit the ground, propelling Wartortle ten to fifteen feet in the air, well over Dragon Breath's stream and Wartortle popped out of its shell having stabilized its rotation.

"Icy Wind!" Ian roared. Wartortle already had the move channeling and fired the area of effect Ice Type attack at Zygarde, who had just finished firing off the stream of Dragon Breath. Zygarde leapt to the side but still got caught up in the quadruple-times effective move, and Zygarde tried to hold fast, but eventually wilted. I was hoping Grimsley's maneuver training for Wartortle wouldn't be a complete waste, good to see. Rapid Spin's speed boost effect is going to come in handy for whatever comes next.

"Zygarde is unable to battle!" Craig announced, holding his hand up to Wartortle. Wartortle quickly waddled to Ian's side of the battlefield, giving a proud croak. The ASF side looked shellshocked, with Gladion, Kiawe, and Lana's mouths agape. Hau watched on with a big smile, while Anabel was already furiously scribbling more notes on her notepad.

"Excellent job Wartortle," Ian said, allowing himself a grin for a moment. Wartortle gave another croak and locked back in.

"Well, that wasn't half bad actually," Suzy-Marie said. "But you're not taking out the third Pokemon I caught in this world." Suzy-Marie held another Poke Ball in her hand and let it fly.

Out came a green humanoid Pokemon with a white dress who did an elegant twirl, making its white dress rise like a tutu. Kirlia.

"Ready? Begin!" Craig called out.

"Water Pulse!" Ian roared.

"Magical Leaf!" Suzy-Marie belted out.

Kirlia twirled once more before lifting itself into the air with Psychic TE before it gave way to a vibrant green. A dozen glowing green missiles appeared around Kirlia and began streaking toward Wartortle. Wartortle had already fired off the dozens of glowing blue rings, which the green missiles seemed to effortlessly weave through.

Wartortle withdrew into its shell promptly as the streaking leaves passed through its shell, causing the sheltering turtle to groan with pain as it took the super effective hit. Kirlia on the other hand was knocked back a little as each ring collided with it, its cries of pain getting louder until Water Pulse had finally ended. Kirlia gave Wartortle an angry look.

It doesn't look too hurt. But Kirlia's physical Defense is significantly lower than its Special Defense. Trying to go blow for blow with Special Attacks will doom Wartortle. Luckily after Rapid Spin we've got the Speed advantage. "Alright Wartortle, Bite!" Wartortle launched itself at its foe with unnatural agility, and Kirlia glowed with Psychic TE but was too slow for the turtle with dark energy covering its jaws. Wartortle snapped its jaws onto Kirlia's torso, causing a shriek of pain from the humanoid Pokemon. There we go!

After Wartortle had released Kirlia, the Psychic-Fairy Pokemon suddenly glowed with dark pink Psychic TE once more and disappeared, re-appearing right behind Wartortle silently as bright pink TE engulfed its upper body. A pair of bright pink, translucent lips appeared and struck Wartortle on the back of its head, locking on for a couple seconds before an obnoxiously loud kissing sound with a moan hit Ian's ears and the lips retreated back to Kirlia, seemingly rejuvenating it. Draining Kiss? Dammit.

"Wartortle, Rapid Spin!" Wartortle didn't even need to turn around as it withdrew in its shell and began spinning. Launching itself at Kirlia quickly, smacking into the fragile Psychic-Fairy Pokemon. Wartortle's spinning shell ricocheted off Kirlia and he stuck the landing with a triumphant croak. I wonder how you're gonna react when you evolve into Blastoise and can't do this anymore?

Kirlia Teleported back to Suzy-Marie's side, a bit worse for wear on her body. "Okay Kirlia, Calm Mind!"

"Bite!" Ian commanded. Wartortle launched itself at the glowing Kirlia, but moments before Wartortle was slated to make contact, Calm Mind's channel ended and it Teleported away once more, this time close to Ian on the opposite side of the field.

"Great, now Magical Leaf!" Suzy-Marie ordered. It took a couple seconds for Kirlia to manifest more glowing green missiles, but it did so, and Wartortle took to its shell again as Magical Leaf passed through Wartortle's shell once more, leaving Wartortle struggling to stand when it did re-emerge from its shell. Stupid perfect accuracy move. Not sure how many Wartortle will be able to take. Seems like Rapid Spin's the only thing working right now.

"Rapid Spin!" Wartortle went back to spinning, and Kirlia was delayed a little longer before it glowed with Psychic TE and started to float before Wartortle crashed into it once more, even faster than before. Rapid Spin's speed boosts are really stacking up nicely. Kirlia channeling Type Energy to launch moves at Wartortle are going to take too long at this point.

Kirlia moaned with pain as it struggled to stand back up. Wartortle gave an excited, gurgle of a growl as it kept its focus on Kirlia. "Bite!"

"Magical Leaf!" Suzy-Marie yelled.

Wartortle launched forward, taking Kirlia's torso into its Dark TE-coated mouth. Kirlia yelped in pain, but the green missiles of Magical Leaf still manifested through the pain, and they swarmed on to Wartortle. Wartortle released its jaws from Kirlia, being sent backwards and onto its back. I don't think Wartortle can take another one of those…

"Now Kirlia, Life Dew while it's down!" Suzy-Marie called out, an arrogance clear in her voice. Kirlia manifested light blue TE around itself and all of the wounds Wartortle had inflicted seemed to disappear, its skin now as fair as it had been before. Shit. "A trainer that actually cares about their Pokemon would surrender this round," Suzy-Marie taunted.

Ian understood the morality of Suzy-Marie's point, and during training sessions with Tupp and Grimsley this was often the point the Pokemon's trainer would recall them, but the boiling blood in his veins, full of his own pride and anger didn't allow for that. Ian's scowl darkened.

Wartortle gave a guttural battle cry as it began to glow with Water TE. Wait what? That's not the light of evolution- Ian gasped as the realization hit him. It's Torrent, Wartortle's ability! No wonder I haven't seen it yet, I don't let Wartortle get to this point, or it gets knocked out. "Wartortle, Water-"

Wartortle's loud, gurgling battling cry seemed to drown Ian out, and Wartortle launched itself forward, its tail aglow in Water Type Energy. Kirlia began to glow with Psychic TE, but Wartortle spun its tail around and slammed into Kirlia's body with a crack! Kirlia was sent flying like a cannon ball, smashing into the battlefield's barrier wall, causing cracks to form in the barrier. Wartortle gave a fierce, gurgling battle cry as it puffed out its chest. Holy shit Wartortle, that Aqua Tail was AMAZING!

"How do ya like them apples?" Ian called out angrily.

Suzy Marie's spectators went deadly quiet, with Craig forgetting he was the ref for a good five seconds before raising his hand and declaring Kirlia unable to battle. Suzy-Marie recalled Kirlia, with Ian noticing his adversary's body shaking slightly. I think she just realized she might actually lose this. Suzy-Marie reached for her Poke Ball belt slowly, eyeing him suspiciously as she did before shifting focus to the Poke Ball she'd selected.

"Suzy-Marie, is something wrong?" Craig asked, unable to hide a slight grin. "It's been ten seconds since Kirlia was KO'd."

"Just thinking…" Suzy-Marie said nervously. "Okay Ian. Not gonna lie, I'm impressed."

Ian didn't respond to the flattery, keeping his intense focus on Suzy-Marie and Wartortle. Here comes Riolu. With all of Wartortle's built up Speed, we should be able to land a good hit or two.

"But you don't stand a chance against this!" Suzy-Marie called out, tossing her Poke Ball into the air. Out manifested a jackal, but not the jackal Ian was expecting. Riolu already evolved? Before his Wartortle adorned in the light of Torrent's Water Type Energy stood an anthropomorphic jackal with black and blue fur with a tan, furry torso. Ian exhaled, still trying to keep his laser focus on the battle, but still a bit blown away by Suzy-Marie's team. And this isn't even including the shiny starter. Ian noticed a dark red Z-Crystal around Lucario's neck and sighed. A Fighting Type Z-Crystal? That's not good.

"Alright Wartortle, let's give 'em all we got!" He encouraged. Wartortle gave an affirmative croak.

"Ready?" Craig asked, and upon seeing nods from Ian and Suzy-Marie put his hands up. "Begin!"

"Lucario Aura Sphere!" Suzy-Marie called out.

"Water Pulse, then Protect!" Ian called out. Wartortle's Speed edge from the continuous Rapid Spins showed as Wartortle fired off a Water Pulse with lightning quick efficiency, and before Lucario's glowing Aura Sphere had even left its palms, Wartortle had taken on Protect's shroud of white.

Lucario was blasted backward, leaving its feet as Water Pulse's power, boosted by Torrent, struck it with a fierceness. Aura Sphere collided with Wartortle with a loud, luminous explosion, but when Ian opened his eyes from the blast, Wartortle croaked a taunt. We're not out of the woods yet bud.

"Aqua Tail!"

"Extreme Speed!" Suzy-Marie called out.

Wartortle launched into action, tail beginning to glow with Water TE, but Lucario had already vanished and before Ian could comprehend where the mystical karate jackal had appeared, it had already struck Wartortle brutally, knocking it out of its Aqua Tail channel. Wartortle was sent flying, barely retreating into its shell before crashing into the psychic barrier surrounding the battlefield. Shit.

Wartortle got out, a little unsteady in its stance. "Aura Sphere!" Suzy-Marie called out.

"Protect!" Ian called out. Wartortle's protective white shroud took over once more as Aura Sphere collided again. But Ian didn't hear Suzy-Marie's next command as the jackal appeared right as the shroud dissipated, smacking Wartortle once more with another Extreme Speed.

"Wartortle is unable to battle!" Craig called out.

"Amazing job bud," Ian said under his breath as he recalled Wartortle's fallen form. Ian sighed as he put Wartortle's Poke Ball back on its magnetic belt slot, and he tensed as he realized he had to make a decision. Sawsbuck or Sandshrew?

"Oh, you ain't ready for what comes next!" Tupp called out excitedly.

"Tupp, I'm fucking serious," Plumeria spat quietly as she smacked Tupp once more. Ian grimaced, looking at Suzy-Marie and her Lucario. His adversary had gotten her cocky smile back, and Lucario finished up its Naruto-run back to Suzy-Marie's side of the battlefield and took a martial arts stance.

Ian turned to Anabel and the other ASF side and realized all of them were staring at him intensely, hands close to their Poke Ball belts. They didn't even cheer when she won. Something's really off here. Ian turned back to the Team Skull side, where Plumeria had her hands folded, almost begging and shaking her head. But Ian noticed the knowing, amused smirk on Colress' face and felt a bone-chilling shiver hit him. This is really fishy, too fishy.

"Hey Ian, you gonna use a grass type? Or you gonna use something else?" Suzy-Marie said. Ian noticed her stealing a glance at Anabel.

Ian turned back to Colress, who chuckled even louder.

"Uh… Ian, I hate to say it, but are you going to make a decision?" Craig asked morosely.

Everywhere he looked there seemed to be red flags. He then took one more look at Plumeria and mouthed: "you owe me." Ian then reached past his Heal Ball and went for his Premier Ball, sending out his Alolan-Sandshrew.

"What? A four-times weak Pokemon?" Suzy-Marie asked, clearly disappointed. "I thought you'd have more pride than that."

Ian shrugged. You wouldn't understand. "Don't underestimate her, you haven't seen what she can do against Alphas!" Ian justified.

Suzy-Marie grunted. "Whatever."

"Are we ready?" Craig asked, a hint of disappointment in his voice.

Ian nodded, and Craig called out "Begin!"

"I'll humor you, for a bit," Suzy-Marie said. "Lucario, Force Palm!"

"Snowscape!" Ian called out.

Lucario dashed forward, its arms stretching out behind it. Sandshrew's arms were crossed, glowing with light blue Ice Type Energy until she stretched them out, causing the area within a fifteen foot radius from its spot to become frosted. Sandshrew's body began to glow with traces of Ice TE as it suddenly slid to the side, letting Lucario slip on the frozen area.

"Very funny," Suzy-Marie called out. "Have an Aura Sphere for your troubles then!"

"Dig!" Ian commanded. By the time Lucario had launched the glowing homing attack, Sandshrew was already underground and safe from the eventual small explosion. Suzy-Marie gasped as Ian assumed she realized this was still a losable fight. You gave me an inch.

"Lucario, get out of the frost!" Suzy-Marie commanded. Lucario quickly turned around began dashing, only for Sandshrew to blast out of the ground cloaked in Ground Type Energy as it barreled into Lucario with a smack. Lucario yelped in pain as it crashed to the ground, with Sandshrew taking a moment to point and laugh its squeaky taunt to its adversary before returning underground, making Ian smirk. Interesting use of your time re-gathering energy for another Dig.

"Lucario, Extreme Speed out of there!" Suzy-Marie called out. Lucario lit up with Normal Type Energy and turned into a flash of speeding light. Sandshrew was a second late as it burst forth from the ground into the air, realizing its target was a couple dozen feet away. Aw shit.

"Aura Sphere!" Suzy-Marie ordered coldly. Lucario put its hands together and did a light jump like it was winding up for a cricket throw before launching the glowing orb of blue. Sandshrew was milliseconds from landing when the orb collided with Sandshrew, sending her bouncing off the ground as she got out of Snowscape's range, with Sandshrew finally coming to a stop on its belly, only a small whimper escaped its mouth.

"Uh…" Craig said nervously as he readied his arms to signal Sandshrew's defeat, but Sandshrew gave a loud, angry squeak before its arms began pushing its body back up. How the hell are you still conscious after THAT?

"Really? Pokemon-Amie powers?" Suzy-Marie called out bitterly.

"Like you don't have any bullshit luck on your side," Ian complained bitterly. "Sandshrew, Dig if you can!" Sandshrew nodded, strained but was underground within moments. If we can land a crit or something, we might be able to take Lucario out.

"Lucario, open your mind!" Suzy-Marie called out. "Sense where it's going to attack and then use-"

"Now!" Ian called out urgently. Gotta beat whatever aura bullshit is coming.

"Rasengan!" Suzy-Marie called out, making Ian involuntarily roll his eyes.

Sandshrew came out of the ground more slowly, partially because of fatigue but also the lack of Snowscape, and Lucario used the time to channel an Aura Sphere, but instead of firing it, the glowing blue orb stayed in Lucario's hand as Lucario directed the orb to Sandshrew. The moment Sandshrew made contact with the orb his bully of a Pokemon was sent careening across the battlefield, smacking into the Snowscape lifelessly. "Sandshrew is unable to battle! Lucario and Suzy-Marie win the match!"

A small cheer came from the ASF spectators, and Ian noticed Colress softly clapping. His fellow Team Skull members seemed a bit letdown except for Plumeria, who looked about as neutral as she normally would. That's her way of smiling.

Ian grimaced, reaching for his Premier Ball and recalling Sandshrew. "Great job. That was one hell of an effort," he told Sandshrew's ball before putting it back in his Poke Ball belt.

"Okay you two, come up and shake hands!" Craig said, waving them both to the middle of the battlefield. Suzy-Marie's smile turned to a frown as she made eye contact with him.

Ian took a deep breath before making his way over slowly on account of remnants of Sandshrew's Snowscape still scattered across the battlefield. When Ian got to the middle ground, Suzy-Marie's frown had only gotten bigger and her arms were folded.

"Good match," Ian offered.

Suzy-Marie curled her lip defiantly. "I don't even get to feel good about that because of the type mismatch at the end," Suzy-Marie complained, causing Ian to snort involuntarily.

"Come on now Suzy-" Craig said.

"Suzy-Marie," she corrected.

"Suzy Marie," Craig said, no longer trying to hide his annoyance. "Your Pokemon did very well, you should be proud." Suzy-Marie sighed but seemed to accept Craig's reasoning.

"Even if Lucario had some trouble with Sandshrew," Ian said with a grin, enjoying Suzy-Marie's annoyance.

"Sandshrew only got to use Snowscape because I didn't want to end it with Aura Sphere in one turn," Suzy-Marie said, a whine drifting into her voice.

Craig scoffed. "Suzy-"

"They don't teach you to be humble in victory?" Ian fired back.

Suzy-Marie scoffed.

"You decided to play with your food. That's okay, but what am I supposed to do, tell my partners to just roll over anyways?" Ian demanded.

Suzy-Marie swallowed her tongue, and Anabel cleared her voice to draw Ian's attention. "Only three weeks you say?" Anabel asked.

Ian nodded.

"I've only seen veteran trainers push her to that point," Anabel said. "If you continue to improve at the rate you're going, you'll be a fearsome trainer."

Ian cracked a smile. "Thanks."

Plumeria and Team Skull joined the sudden meetup in the middle, standing behind Craig.

"I hope we never meet as adversaries," Anabel said sincerely, offering her hand.

Ian shook it. "Same."

Hau then stepped up to Ian with a big smile. "That was an amazing battle. I've never seen a Wartortle used like that!" He said excitedly as he offered his hand as well. I shook two ASF members' hands before Suzy-Marie even offered hers. What a bitch.

"Thanks, we did a lot of work on that," Ian said, a growing pride in his voice. Hau gave him a big smile before turning over to Suzy-Marie

"Great fight as always," Hau congratulated. "I wonder if it inspired you to write another song?"

Suzy-Marie laughed nervously. "Yeah, maybe…"

Hau continued on cheerfully. "I know everyone at the open mic nights like hearing 'Love Story' and 'You Belong With Me' but …" Hau's voice trailed off as Ian saw panic come into Suzy-Marie's eyes.

When Ian realized what she was panicking about, he let out a loud laugh. She's playing Taylor Swift songs and saying they're her own. I shouldn't be surprised. Suzy-Marie put her hands together, her eyes pleading for him to not say anything more. Ian grimaced, but relented. Be humble in victory.

Suzy-Marie mouthed "thank you" before returning her attention to what Hau was saying and Gladion forced himself into the conversation. Ian was formally introduced to Kiawe and Lana, who both praised his battling skills. When the two got interested in speaking to the rest of Team Skull, Plumeria took the opportunity to take him by the shoulder and guided him away from the group a little bit.

"Ian, I can't say thank you enough," Plumeria whispered. "I know you wanted to win, but you put aside what you wanted on behalf of us, on behalf of Po Town," Plumeria explained sincerely. She then put her hand in between them, raising just her pinky. "I will not forget this."

"You're welcome," Ian said with an annoyed sigh as his hand met hers and they intertwined their pinkies.

Plumeria nodded. "Okay, we should get going soon then-"

"Uh, Ian, Plumeria?" Suzy-Marie asked nervously as she approached them.

"What?" Plumeria said, a hint of anger in her voice.

"Could I talk to Ian for a bit?" Suzy-Marie asked. Is that… humility in her voice?

"Fine, but we gotta get going soon," Plumeria said with a grunt, leaving Ian alone with Suzy-Marie.

"Good match," Suzy-Marie said, offering her hand, which Ian eyed suspiciously for a moment before shaking it. Behind Suzy-Marie's shoulder, Ian noticed Gladion watching closely. Ian nudged his head in a subtle acknowledgement for the likely cause of Suzy-Marie's newfound humility. "And thanks for not spilling the beans about the songs."

"You're welcome. I wouldn't want to ruin your future record deals," he joked.

"Wait, did Hau tell about the scout coming to the open mic night?" Suzy-Marie asked.

Ian scoffed. "It was a joke."

"Oh… sorry," Suzy-Marie said uncomfortably. "So with that said, Gladion kinda explained how he's seen me treating you and he basically said it's like rubbing it in your face, all of these good things that have happened to me. I think I've been kinda projecting the Ian that cheated on me onto you, and for that I'm sorry. I'll try to keep it in check if we ever meet again."

At least someone has awareness in this relationship. "Apology accepted," Ian said, stealing a glance at Gladion. "He seems like a very good guy."

"He is," Suzy-Marie said. "I didn't mean it to brag-"

"I got it," Ian said.

"You know, I don't know Lillie's type, but I can put in a good word for you. She's really sweet," Suzy-Marie offered.

Ian shook his head as he chuckled. "Thanks but no thanks. I got a lot on my plate back in Po Town."

"You've got a girlfriend?" Suzy-Marie asked, and recoiled after seeing his instant grimace. "Any prospects at least?"

Ian rolled his eyes. "No. Well, maybe…" Ian paused.

"Okay, I just thought it'd be cute, the Aether Princess and the Prince of Po Town-"

"You really don't have to keep calling me that," Ian said.

"Okay, sorry. But who's the prospect?" Suzy-Marie asked.

"Mina, the Fairy Trial Captain," Ian answered.

"She's in Po Town?"

Ian nodded. "Yeah. Her and Sophocles are back there."

"So that's where they are," Suzy-Marie said. "Colonel Molayne seems so stressed all the time, I was hoping to get Sophocles with him…"

"Nice," Ian paused. "Is this all you wanted to talk about? Plumeria wants to get moving."

"Oh yeah, yeah, we should probably talk about a few things…" Suzy-Marie said, wracking her brain.

"Zy-doge," Ian croaked.

Suzy-Marie smiled nervously. "Yeah, I saw the Zygarde Cube and asked if I could have it and they just gave it to me. Have you seen any Zygarde Cells around?"

"Quite a few actually," Ian said.

"Good... So the Ultra Rift, any idea what it is? Is it Nebby?" Suzy-Marie asked.

"No idea," Ian said. "I haven't heard anything about Nebby, so it could be that."

"Okay, just Aether doesn't know about Nebby, so I figured I'd ask," Suzy-Marie said. "Any other 'meta thing' to talk about?"

Ian shrugged. "Besides how cringe 'Rasengan' is?"

"Oh yeah…" Suzy-Marie said with a nervous smile as she touched her hair, making Ian focus on the Rainbow Badge hair accessory. "It was a funny little thing when I came up with it, but when someone else from our world hears it, it's… yeah, cringe is probably the right word."

"Whatever you want to call it," Ian said, hinting it was time to end things.

"Okay so, good luck in Po Town," Suzy-Marie said. "I hope Mina makes you happy."

Ian shrugged again. "We'll see. And good luck to you too."

"Thanks," Suzy-Marie said, turning to Gladion who gave a proud nod.

"Finally!" Plumeria barked, storming over to Ian. "I wanna get going-"

"Oh my apologies, Plumeria…" Colress' creepy voice interjected. "...but since it appears we are parting ways, may I steal Ian for a couple minutes?"

Plumeria growled with frustration. "Fine, but don't go too far."

"You have my gratitude, Plumeria," Colress said, taking his arm around Ian's shoulder and leading him a short bit away from the group. "It was smart you didn't reveal Sawsbuck to them."

"Really?" Ian asked.

"I overheard Major Anabel at lunch explaining their plans to capture you if you had any Pokemon deemed a serious threat," Colress said. "And I do think Sawsbuck would've fit the bill."

Ian gulped, realizing how casually Colress had dropped the fact they would've come under attack with just a different use of Pokemon. "That's pretty crazy… Would you have stepped in to help?"

Colress shook his head. "I must apologize, but I would've been selfish and stayed out of the scuffle unless you or Sawsbuck had the potential to die."

Ian rolled his eyes. "At least you're honest."

"Yes…" Colress said before dropping his voice. "In that battle though, I heard a focused anger I recognized all too well. The anger of a man who's struggled and fought for every inch of the metaphorical race only to face someone born a step away from the finish line. It's something I overcame when I was your age as well."

Ian nodded, but Colress halted their walk as he looked intensely into Ian's eyes. "Harness that focused anger of yours, cultivate it, and one day you will even the score with that spoiled brat," Colress said, a chilling brutality in his voice. "And for when that day comes…" The scientist then reached into his coat and pulled out a distinct ball that Ian recognized immediately. It was dark blue with light blue circles going around it, with four slightly yellow protrusions coming out of it. That's a Beast Ball!

"You do recognize it, I figured you would," Colress said with a sinister snicker. "Yes, this is a Beast Ball." Colress then pushed it against Ian's chest. "It's yours now."

Ian gulped. "Thank you sir…"

"I don't think they exist in this world, and I wouldn't recommend you sell it," Colress said as he reached into his coat once more, this time pulling out his omnitron and swiping through it before presenting the screen to Ian. Ian froze as he saw what was pictured on the screen: a floating purple, dark blue, and black puffball with two appendages sticking out of its head. A Cosmog. Ian felt a bead of sweat drip down his forehead as his heart began to pound. "This is called a Cosmog. There's supposed to be one in this world, although when frightened it can Teleport or even create an Ultra Wormhole to another one," Colress said, swiping to the next image on the omintron's screen, which showed a silver orb with a vibrant glow. "This is called the Master Orb," Colress said, excitement creeping into his voice. "This will bend any Pokemon to the user's will, even a Legendary, " Colress explained. "It can only do that for three Pokemon however, and two of its uses have already been spent…" Colress then brought Ian in closer, an almost euphoric smile on his sinister face. "Bring Cosmog or the Master Orb to me with its last use intact, and I will reward you beyond your wildest dreams Ian."

Ian gulped. He definitely didn't accidentally pop up here. He's from the rift. "What was the first thing again?" Ian asked nervously.

"Cosmog," Colress said, honey in his voice.

Ian took one last look and nodded, hoping to appear compliant. "Gotcha sir."

Colress chuckled wickedly. "Very good then Ian," the sinister scientist said, his grin becoming more menacing with each passing moment. "I will be rooting for you." Colress then released Ian from his hold and walked back to the ASF trainers hauntingly.

Ian felt a shiver down his spine as he watched, and his heartbeat drummed incredibly quickly. What the fuck is he? Is it some evil Aether Foundation or Rainbow Rocket or Team Plasma? Maybe something else entirely… When Colress got close to his destination, he stretched his arm out in such a way Ian thought he was putting it around Suzy-Marie. "Oh shit…" Ian said under his breath. Too late to tell her.

"Hey, Prince of Po Town!" Selene teased as she jogged over to Ian. "We're going-" Selene gasped as Ian faced her. "You look like you've seen a ghost."

Ian shivered. "Honestly, I wish I had."
