Chapter 36: Progression New

Chapter 36 Progression

A week had passed since the battle of Atman's Point, and on this cloudy morning Ian stood atop Po Town's eastern wall overlooking Elk Grove, Guzma by his side, both standing silently, scanning and listening for sounds from the treeline below. Guzma's Larvesta, which had taken a position on Guzma's opposite shoulder, gave a bored chirp before Guzma held up a finger to shoosh it.

"I think I hear something too," Ian whispered.

"Shut it," Guzma whispered back.

Ian did so, reminding himself Guzma was a leader at war, and doing Alpha training one on one like this was a gift he couldn't afford to squander. Suddenly a loud Gumshoos' bellowing hit their ears from below, and Ian tensed as he heard Tyrunt's battle cry. The bout was too deep in the treeline to get a good look, but Ian heard the sounds of a fierce struggle.

Nearly half a minute of the brawl passed before Ian heard Tyrunt cry it out in tremendous pain. Ian instinctively tensed, desperate to see what had befallen his rambunctious partner, but Guzma steadied him. "But maybe something happened," Ian said.

Guzma shook his head. "If it loses to this Gumshoos, them red eyes ain't coming out."

Ian grimaced, watching on hopefully, praying his ears would pick up some sign of hope. The only sound he could hear was the wind until he heard a savage growl and a low, mammalian whimper come from the forest, only to go still.

Ian pumped his fist excitedly. Sure, Gumshoos is probably dead, but Mina and Plumeria say the species is invasive and needs to be controlled. If Tyrunt needs to eat something that isn't just fruit, might as well be that Pokemon.

"Sounds like she got it," Guzma said, holding his fist up to Ian's, pounding it. "Now let's go see what's up with it." Guzma quickly turned and sped-walked along the wall before coming to the nearby stairwell, Ian following closely behind.

"Okay 'Prince of Po Town," Guzma said mockingly. "What are the three rules for training Alphas?"

Ian sighed, making sure he got the order right this time. "Rule number one, no turf, no teeth."

"Meaning?" Guzma demanded

"If an Alpha doesn't have space to roam and call its own, it's not a true Alpha."

"Good. Number two?" Guzma demanded bluntly.

"Don't order, allow," Ian answered quickly. "An Alpha has to feel it's in charge, it'll lose its moxie if you nag it outside of battle."

"Good. You finally gonna get this last one? It's the fucking simplest," Guzma said bitingly.

"Keep it wild," Ian began. "It fights alone, it must keep its edge so no spoiling it, and be cautious healing it in Pokemon Centers." Being healed instantaneously can make Alphas soft, or that's what Guzma says. It sure doesn't seem to effect Tupp's Alpha Hisuian-Growlithe though.

Guzma nodded. "Finally, fuck. How many days we been doin' this?"

Ian sighed. "This is the third day, I think."

Guzma grunted as he started scampering down the stairs, causing the Larvesta on his shoulder to chirp in a panic. Upon reaching the bottom of the stairs, Ian found the courage to ask a question that had been nagging him since he'd finished memorizing the rules of Alpha training. "And boss, how'd you come up with these rules?"

Guzma scoffed. "I didn't come up with these, I just shortened Keahi's lessons."

Keahi, why am I not surprised? Her name kept popping up around Po Town. The island's former Kahuna, the leader of Keahi's Cinders, which had been the original form of Team Skull, seemed like a person who'd tragically died yet her presence was felt all around the town. Plumeria still speaks of her almost reverently. "I keep hearing her name pop up around Po Town. Any idea what happened to her?"

Guzma shrugged, causing Larvesta to lose its balance and almost fall off Guzma's shoulder, barely clinging on by a last second String Shot. "Last I heard she's not allowed on the island, but that's it."

Ian grimaced. I'd love to meet her and pick her brain one day.

"I expect you're not exactly her biggest fan, possibly being the cause of the Ultra Rift that brought you here," Guzma said.

It was Ian's turn to shrug. "Even if she did, I highly doubt the Ultra Rift is what she intended to happen."

"She definitely didn't think that would happen," Guzma said. "I'm not sure what she intended to do and Rook won't spill those beans. But I know her. She cared for all of us outcasts deeply, she wouldn't have done what she did if she knew this was the consequence."

Ian nodded. "Plumeria, Tupp, and Rapp speak highly of her as well."

Guzma nodded. "Damn right they do." Guzma exhaled briefly before continuing. "I was some no-name outlaw, got disqualified from my island challenge. Went outside the law and pissed off the other criminals, so I was fucked there too. No one ever gave me a shred of respect, no one until Keahi."

Oh yeah, with no Lusamine running around the islands leading the Aether Foundation, she never runs into Guzma. "That's dope," Ian said, trying to show he was listening.

Guzma shook his head dismissively. "It's funny, when I first met her she told me I had great strength, but I had to be more than just strong to be a true Pokemon trainer. I didn't even think of what she really meant then, I was just happy someone said I was strong."

Ian made sure not to laugh. He'd heard Guzma blow up on people for far less.

"But a kid like you? She would've liked you. Prolly would've taken you under her wing like she did me," Guzma said. "The nights when I'm having trouble sleeping, I'll think about why she took me in here in the first place. She didn't even train me much on how to use my Pokemon, but about a bunch of other shit. She was too preachy for me then, but clearly some of it got through…" Guzma's voice trailed off. "Took me a while to come around on the idea she might've been training me to run Po Town when she was gone."

"Why's that?"

"She seemed like she hated my guts from when I first got here, always bitching, always nagging…" Guzma paused. "But y'know, she wouldn't have wasted her breath if she didn't think something was here." Guzma then pointed to his heart.

"I wish I could've met her before she got exiled," Ian said.

Guzma shook his head once more. "She loved Alola deeply, so I bet she's still in the region. Just not on this island."

Ian grimaced. Maybe when things calm down I'd be able to visit her. Maybe having Sawsbuck blessed by Tapu Bulu would get her to talk to me. Maybe I could even write her a letter and have Driftwood- Ian shook his head and took a deep breath as his blood began to boil.

"Eyes up Ian," Guzma said, pointing ahead as the duo neared the trees of Elk Grove. Ian scanned the perimeter of the treeline until Guzma stopped on the outskirts and turned to face Ian. "Now remember what I was tellin' ya," Guzma continued. "Check for no severe injuries but don't stay too long. Don't nag, and don't show fear."

Ian nodded quickly, still feeling upset about Driftwood's bounty they'd put on him. "Gotcha boss," Ian growled, a hint of bitterness in his tone. Guzma tittered lightly before Ian turned to approach Tyrunt. No nagging, no micro-managing. Ian clenched his fists, more anger simmering in his veins. Because of that direction, I haven't been able to work much with Tyrunt on that variant technique I was hoping to get started on. As Ian got deeper in the grove, he heard Tyrunt growl intimidatingly.

Ian scowled as he sensed where the growl had originated and walked slowly, calmly. Tyrunt's head suddenly appeared out of a bush, blood around its mouth as it snapped threateningly at Ian. "You defeated Gumshoos," Ian said coldly. "Good work."

Tyrunt growled louder, almost like it had accepted Ian's words but waited on a command. Ian took a quick look at Tyrunt's dark eyes, not seeing any hints of red just yet. Oh well, Tyrunt just made its first kill of Alpha training, probably too much to expect. "Carry on Tyrunt."

Tyrunt gave an enthusiastic growl, its tongue licking its chops before retreating its head into the bush. It seemingly bumped its head on a branch and snapped at the plant it dwelled in. Ian froze as he saw a flicker of red come across Tyrunt's eyes before the tyrannosaur disappeared from view. YES!

Ian made his way back to Guzma on the outside of Elk Grove where the Team Skull boss waited for him with his arms folded. "Any luck?" Guzma asked.

Ian nodded, a proud smile coming across his face. "Tyrunt looked fine, and I saw its eyes flicker with red."

Guzma smirked wickedly. "Good shit. This Tyrunt of yours has already taken the longest to hit the red eyes of the few alphas I've trained."

"Yeah, any idea why that is? Tupp's Growlithe seemingly got 'em pretty quickly," Ian replied.

"That's cuz Growlithe's easy to train, real compliant," Guzma said. "Dragon Types are harder, and that Tyrunt's hard to handle even for a Dragon Type."

Ian nodded. "Understood."

"That thing's gonna be a monster if you can evolve it and keeps its eyes," Guzma observed.

"Biggest problem will be feeding it," Ian said.

Guzma snickered wickedly. "No, the biggest problem will be getting it to not eat certain things. It'll be so big us humans will be on the menu."

Ian grimaced. "Damn…"

"Hey Guzma, word from the radio network!" Plumeria's sounded off loudly. Ian and Guzma turned to the top of the wall overlooking Elk Grove where they'd just been and saw Plumeria looking down upon them.

"What's going on?" Guzma asked.

"That ship the network was following? It landed, and a combined Stompz and Pearl Clan squad engaged it," Plumeria explained. "Captured five enemy trainers."

Guzma and Ian pumped their fists excitedly. "Good shit!" Guzma called out. Guzma then turned to Ian and held out his fist. "That's what, twelve prisoners we've got now?"

Ian nodded. "Pretty sure."

"Rook says Sinclair likely only had fifty to sixty trainers or so at the start. We keep whittling them down, they won't be able to keep up their piracy tactics," Guzma said.

Ian almost rolled his eyes, as Guzma iterated Ian's idea he'd shared at the strategy meeting, but knew it'd be a dumb hill to die on. "Sounds good."

"I'll be right over!" Guzma called out as he dashed from the treeline.

"Why aren't you using Scizor to just fly up here?" Plumeria questioned.

"Alpha training, don't want Tyrunt to engage!" Guzma called back as he made his way to the front gate.

"How's alpha training going so far?" Plumeria asked Ian.

Ian smiled proudly. "Made good progress today."

"Radio network says there's an Ultra Storm forming a twenty minute ride from here. Interested in going?" Plumeria asked.

"Yeah!" Ian said, hoping to build up his stash of Ultra Candy even more.

"Well we still got a bit, so no rush. We'll leave in an hour," Plumeria said.

Ian nodded and gave his squad leader a thumbs up.

***

A few minutes later, Ian used his key to open his locker at Tom's warehouse. On the top shelf where he kept his valuables, Ian gazed upon the light blue Z-Crystal Colress had mined himself before giving it to Ian. Next to that rested Colress' other gift, the Beast Ball. Ian's stomach filled with dread as he remembered how sinister Colress had sounded upon giving him the Beast Ball. I'll come back and get it before we head out for the Ultra Storm just in case we encounter an Ultra Beast. Next to Colress' valuable items was Ian's collection of Star Pieces alongside a trio of large plastic bags with blue masses of varying size. Ian smirked as he counted how many EXP Candies he had in each. Three small, one medium, three large. It's a good start to building back to my initial numbers after giving each team member a candy before the battle with Atman's Point. Checking out Ultra Storms is the only reason I'm able to get out of Po Town these days with Driftwood's bounty on me.

Ian then reached for his guitar case and smiled as thoughts of Mina entered his mind. Plumeria killing the crush thing in its crib had helped him refocus on Mina more. Sure he still had some latent feelings for his squad leader, but knowing nothing would ever come of it had helped sweep it under the rug.

Ian shook the thought from his mind and pulled his guitar case out of the locker before closing and re-attaching the lock. He made his way to the western wall facing the sea and found Mina leaning over the edge of the wall, her head resting on her hands. "Hey there, beautiful!" Ian called out.

Mina turned to him and smiled, standing up from her position and dashing over to him, giving him a big hug and the two shared a long, singular kiss. "How'd training with Guzma go today?"

"Really good I think," Ian said. "Tyrunt's eyes flickered red for a moment, so we're making progress."

"Congrats," Mina said.

"How's watch duty?" Ian asked.

Mina rolled her eyes. "Boring. Like incredibly boring."

"Isn't it always kind of that?" Ian asked with a nervous smile.

Mina shook her head. "Well it used to be eight hour shifts and you'd get a day off after three days. But because we have the radio network going, it's twelve hour shifts with no days off."

Ian grimaced. "Yeah, but it won't last forever. Just until Sinclair wants to make peace."

"I know the radio network was your plan and everything, but it's starting to take a toll on some of us," Mina said.

Ian sighed. "Yeah… But we don't have another option that wins us the war and protects our crop fields." Ian paused, looking to change the subject. "At least you're getting time to come up with some new murals, right?" Ian asked.

Mina grimaced. "Well not really…"

"What's wrong?" Ian asked, realizing the boring part of watch duty was just the surface.

Mina exhaled, turning back to the sea pensively. "I'm not sure I want to talk about it though…"

Ian put his arm around, kissing her painted cheek to assure her. "I'm here for you okay? If you don't want to talk about it, that's okay. But when you're ready to talk about it, I'm all ears." Ian said with a grin.

"Yeah…" Mina said pensively. "Could you do me a favor?"

"Anything," Ian asked.

"Can you play 'Seafolk Village' for me? Been kinda homesick lately…" Mina admitted, her eyes beginning to water.

"Of course," Ian said tenderly, withdrawing his hand from her and opening up his guitar case. Ian quickly checked for which strings were out of tune and gave his girlfriend a big smile as he began to play. Mina gazed out at the sea as Ian played his acoustic guitar remix of the song. He filled with pride as he saw Mina crack a smile, even though a tear did begin to fall down her cheek. Ian cycled through the tune a couple times before he played more softly.

"Thanks Ian," Mina said, her voice wavering. "I really needed that…"

"Anything for you," Ian said, putting the guitar down and cuddling up to her against the wall.

"Well, truth be told I do have a mural in mind," Mina said.

"What is it?" Ian asked with genuine curiosity.

"Seafolk Village… back home…" Mina said.

Ian nodded. It really FELT comfy to hang out at in the games. Can't imagine how cool it is in this world. "The couple times you've talked about it, it's sounded really amazing."

Mina shook her head. "It's not some big city like Hau'Oli or Malie City, but there's something special and soothing about it."

"Do you think you'd want to go back if given the chance?" Ian asked.

"In a heartbeat," Mina said bluntly. "I know this is basically your home now, but my family's there."

"It'd be weird if you didn't want to go back," Ian said.

Mina nodded. "Every so often, leaving here crosses my mind." Mina paused before recoiling. "I didn't mean leaving you-"

Ian shook his head. "Mina, I get it. Probably more than most people in Po Town." Ian leaned in, cuddling Mina harder and giving her another kiss on the cheek. "I don't think I'll ever get to see my family again. Your family's just a few islands away..."

Mina turned to him, her silver eyes brimming with tears. "Thanks Ian…" Mina curled up closer to him, resting her head against his chest.

"I got you Mina," Ian said, caressing her back as soothingly as he could.

Mina giggled lightly. "You know, I hate to bring this up, but my ex would say that all of the time."

"Oh. Sorry… sore spot?"

"A little," Mina said.

"Can I ask what happened?" Ian asked.

Mina nodded. "You told me your story, I guess it's time I tell you mine…" Mina paused. "His name was Elwood, everyone would call him EJ though. We dated for almost three years."

Ian nodded, signalling he was listening but not wanting to interrupt.

"When my family asked me to move to Po Town to take care of my grandma, it screwed things up for us," Mina said. "I'd been here before, I knew internet and phone services were real spotty, but he wanted to stay together, writing letters if needed. I… didn't think it'd work, so I broke up with him before I left."

Ian nodded carefully. "That's rough. Just circumstances got in the way?"

Mina nodded. "Right person, wrong time."

That's why she got nervous with Hyde. Well, that and he's a fucking prick. Ian gave her a squeeze, ensuring she didn't feel alone.

"You'd really like it there. In Seafolk Village I mean," Mina said.

Ian nodded. "Yeah I probably would… But I wouldn't be the 'Prince of Po Town' anymore. I hope that wouldn't be a dealbreaker for you."

Mina giggled softly, her watery eyes gazing into his with pure, genuine gratitude before she buried her face in his chest. "It wouldn't be."

***

As the days at war passed, it became more of a drag for Po Town's denizens. It got especially rainy on the western side of Ula'Ula Island, and as the rains fell on Po Town, so did the spirits of most of Team Skull. While the radio network had been a success with Team Skull now holding over twenty prisoners in The Basement, Ian noticed more annoyed looks going his way around town. When he realized the radio network lookouts were running around in the mud for days on end, he understood why fatigue was setting in. There was one celebratory day when a trade deal with Surge was announced, when the aforementioned gym leader's faction The Last Spark agreed to purchase certain strategic berries from Team Skull, while Po Town would be getting cold hard cash. This also ended the suspension in relations with Outrigger after the convoy incident on Ian's fourth day.

Since Ian wasn't on a guard squad and Plumeria was only using him for raiding Ultra Storms, he had plenty of time to train which he took full advantage of. Tyrunt's eyes were now going fully red for a minute or two at a time, and Ian even heard a fully fledged Alpha Roar at one point while observing from on top of Po Town's eastern wall.

The sound of Sawsbuck's hooves approaching broke Ian from his calm reflection, and Ian spied his blessed stag being ridden by a very uncomfortable Tupp heading his way. "Woah there Sawsbuck," Tupp said as the stag and rider neared Ian.

"Didn't go for the jump over the creek yet?" Ian asked.

"Nah bro, I dunno how you do this. Seems unstable as fuck," Tupp said.

"It's no Mudsdale saddle that's for sure," Ian said. "You just gotta trust Sawsbuck's gonna make sure you're okay."

Tupp smiled nervously. "Yeah I dunno…" Tupp said. "Why you havin' me ride Sawsbuck now anyways? You scared of riding it?"

Ian shook his head. "No, I love riding Sawsbuck," Ian said as he gave Sawsbuck a scratch on its neck, making the deer bleat happily. "But because me and Sawsbuck are a strategic asset we're going to be targeted. So if I ever get in a situation where I'm about to get captured, I'm supposed to throw Sawsbuck's Heal Ball to a Team Skull member so our food supply won't run out."

"I'm still a bad choice for this cuz ain't no way you're getting captured without me being there," Tupp said. "And ain't we fully supplied on food?"

"Yeah we are now, that's why Sawsbuck and I don't hit the crops every day and the Pearl Clan doesn't come up damn near every day like they used to," Ian explained. "But it's in case I'm gone for a while and our food supplies run low, we need to keep Sawsbuck around in case we need to grow more food."

"Then why we still growing these berries?" Tupp asked.

The trade agreement with Surge keeps us harvesting berries, but that's it," Ian said. "And really only certain berries are what they want." Sitrus, Leppa, Lum, plus Yache, Shuca, and Charti Berries were the ones Surge had demanded large amounts of. The last three were berries that reduced damage from a Pokemon's incoming move. Shuca Berries reduce damage from Ground Type moves, while Yache and Charti Berries reduce damage from Rock and Ice moves. The significance of those Types isn't lost on me. Ian shook the thought from his mind as he helped Tupp off Sawsbuck's back.

"And bro, I saw Selene on top of the wall," Tupp said lowly. "She keeps tryin' to talk to me yo."

Ian grimaced. A few days back Selene had asked Tupp on a date, which he pretty vehemently rejected.

"She just tryin' to make Rook fuckin' jealous, I ain't about that shit," Tupp said.

Ian smiled, offering his fist to bump, which Tupp hit with more force than Ian anticipated. "I dunno, those muscles are really getting some definition dude," Ian pointed out. "No wonder Selene's getting interested in you now." I've been working out with Tupp more, but he's way ahead of me in push ups and sit ups At least I'm well ahead of Slugg, although his clothes are starting to get pretty baggy.

Tupp grimaced. "She think she can fool around with Rook and throw herself at me when Rook tosses her away?" Tupp asked rhetorically. "She ain't for real like you bro."

Ian smiled. "Bros for life dude."

"Bros for life!" Tupp exclaimed, fist bumping Ian once more, this time Ian was prepared for the more forceful fist bump. "One of Tom's guys does tattoos bro, I think Imma get that tattooed on my arm here," Tupp said, pointing at his upper arm muscles. "We should get matching ones!"

Ian shook his head. "I'm not a big tattoo guy, but don't let me stop you from getting it."

"A'ight-"

"Well, well, well," Plumeria's voice interrupted as she approached the duo. "You guys having fun out here?"

"Something like that," Ian replied, turning to see the squad leader. "What's up?"

"Just got out of a strategy meeting," Plumeria said.

"Strategy meeting?" Ian asked. "Did I miss-"

"Bones only," Plumeria said. "Rook wanted it that way."

Ian grimaced. I guess I showed him up too much in the last meeting. "So what's new?"

"Couple things were decided on. We're gonna send an envoy and see if Sinclair wants peace," Plumeria said.

"That'd be good," Ian said.

"But in case they refuse, our squad's going to Outrigger to see if we can find a boat mechanic," Plumeria explained.

"For the two boats we have here?" Ian asked. Getting them back up and running is gonna require one hell of a restoration project. "And what are we gonna do with them anyways?"

"Rook's convinced that if we can take out some of their boats then Sinclair will have to sue for peace," Plumeria explained.

"And face Sinclair on his terms?" Ian asked. "Sounds like a stupid idea."

"Which is why he didn't want you there, I think," Plumeria said. "But officially we're going to Outrigger tomorrow to buy bikes for the Pearl Clan. And you're coming with, Ian."

"Won't Driftwood be there?" Ian asked.

"Yeah, but we'll be able to see if they really did put a bounty on you. Plus they can't just attack you in the middle of a town."

Ian nodded. "Sounds good."

"And I'll be there to fuck up anyone who tries, yo," Tupp said, puffing his chest out.

"Damn right," Ian said, fist bumping Tupp once more.

"We'll try to get there by lunchtime tomorrow, so be ready," Plumeria said.

***

A few hours later Ian sat on a bench with Mina's head on his shoulder, the exhausted defender taking a short nap while he watched Rylee, Plusle, and Impidimp playing tag on the apartment complex's jungle gym. Ian sported a bittersweet smile as he watched Impidimp throwing a quick tantrum, having just missed tagging Plusle.

"Over here, Impidimp! You can't get me!" Rylee called out. Impidimp growled loudly and scampered after her, causing the girl to scream and run away in a fit of excited laughter.

I'm gonna miss this. No matter how much he loved seeing Rylee and Plusle happy like this, Ian had the sinking feeling something big was looming ahead of him and the rest of Po Town. Gonna need all of the help I can get.

Ian heard footsteps approaching, and Sarah, Rylee's guardian beamed with a smile as he made eye contact. "Thank you for these, Ian. She's always in such a great mood after these playdates," Sarah said as she watched Impidimp coming right after Rylee, only for Plusle to jump in between with a determined cry. "Plus it keeps her from bouncing off the walls."

Ian's bittersweet smile became even more so. "Unfortunately I think this'll be the last time we get to do this for a while."

"Getting sent out?" Sarah asked.

"Something like that," Ian said.

Mina stirred and jolted awake when she noticed Sarah. "Oh Ms. Sarah, sorry I-"

"No need to apologize. I hear everyone watching the walls is exhausted," Sarah said.

"Yeah… trying to get a little nap in before my shift tonight," Mina explained with a yawn.

"Okay Rylee, time to finish up!" Sarah called out.

Rylee gasped, clearly offended. "But Impidimp just tagged Plusle!"

"Miss Mina has to get to her shift soon," Sarah explained.

Rylee pouted, drooping her head and walking over to the group unenthusiastically.

Ian and Mina got up, with Ian holding Impidimp's Poke Ball at the ready. "Now Rylee, tell Impidimp goodbye, okay?"

Rylee turned to Impidimp and picked it up, quickly squeezing the imp Pokemon with a hug. "Oh Impidimp, you're my favorite Pokemon. After Plusle of course," Rylee said. Impidimp chuckled wickedly, its way of expressing happiness. "Mr. Ian, will we see you tomorrow?"

Ian shook his head before kneeling down. "I don't think so. They're sending me to a town up the road."

"Will it be scary?" Rylee asked.

"I don't think so," Ian said.

"But you'll see me tomorrow," Mina chimed in. "It's art class day."

"Yay!" Rylee cheered enthusiastically. "Those are my favorite days!"

"Aw, you're making me blush," Mina said with a genuine smile as she gave Rylee a hug.

After the final goodbyes were said, Ian and Mina mosied their way to Tom's warehouse to check Ian's locker before dropping off Mina at her watch position for the night and heading to Elk Grove. Sawsbuck's due to bless the berries in a bit so there won't be any suspicion. Ian made sure to go so deep into the grove he couldn't be observed from the wall and he took Impidimp's Poke Ball out.

"Okay dude, snack time!" Ian called out as Impidimp manifested, babbling incessantly. Ian then reached into his pocket and grabbed a blue cube of Exp Candy, or Ultra Candy as he was trying to get in the habit of saying. "This thing's kinda big, but eat up little buddy." Impidimp swiped the Medium Ultra Candy from Ian's hands and bit into it, loudly munching on it as the imp shoved the candy further into its mouth like a squirrel.

Ian watched carefully as crumbs fell from Impidimp's maw. I wonder if not eating the whole thing changes something? Suddenly Impidimp shoved its whole hand into its mouth and and then noticeably gulped the last of the candy down. Impidimp rubbed its belly, which stuck out a little bit before burping loudly.

Then the imp Pokemon became engulfed in a bright light and Ian shielded his eyes. Here we go… Ian waited patiently until the glow of evolution subsided, and feasted his eyes upon his Pokemon's new form: Morgrem.

Impidimp's light pink had been replaced by a dark pink that covered Morgrem's upper body, while a pale green appeared like a pair of pants covering its legs and waist. Long black hair had sprouted on the imp's head, covering one of Morgrem's eyes like an emo haircut while the rest of Morgrem's hair went halfway down its back. Ian was surprised by the exceptionally longer nose sticking out of Morgrem's face. The freshly evolved Pokemon growled menacingly at Ian as it flipped some of its hair from its face, only to resettle over Morgrem's eye.

"Good to see you, Morgrem," Ian said, sizing up the notably taller form. Morgrem bared its fangs and growled threateningly, making Ian smirk. You don't look half as scary as Tyrunt does when her eyes are red. "Now Morgrem, show me what you can do!"

Chapter 37 Outrigger

When Plumeria's squad rode past Litleo's Hollow, Ian blushed as he remembered his first date night with Mina. They rode by at a pretty rapid pace with the wind at their backs so Ian's quick scan for a Zygarde Cell flicker proved fruitless. It had nearly been an hour of pedaling when Ian recognized a very specific spot along the side of the road with a bush that to his Alola-adjusted eye seemed out of place, leading into an overgrown wilderness. Holy shit, that's the way we took to The Gap on my fourth day. The day Deerling… Ian's bike came to a stop as a wave of emotion hit him.

I've been here so long I'm starting to lose track of the days. I figure I've been in Alola for about two months, and the only reason we're not starving to death is because of Sawsbuck, is because of the events that happened here that day. Ian bowed his head reverently, remembering the person he was that day, and how so much had helped form him, change him since. Lastly, he whispered: "thank you Tapu Bulu. We'd be eating each other alive if it wasn't for your blessing."

"Yo Ian!" Rapp's voice called to Ian as she strolled over to him. "What you stoppin' for?"

Ian sighed. "Just remembering something."

"Remembering what?" Rapp demanded bluntly.

Ian gazed at the fake bush wistfully. "Probably the most important day in my life since I arrived here in Alola."

"What, the day you and Mina…?"

Ian chuckled. "No, not that. Although it's pretty close." Ian turned and lowered his head reverently as a grin came across his face. "The day Deerling and I encountered Tapu Bulu."

"Oh shit, that's the fake bush!" Rapp exclaimed. "No wonder you're all weird about it. It was the day Sawsbuck got blessed and now some fuckers think you're destined to be the Kahuna or some shit, right?"

Ian shook his head. "Ted Beaumont seemed to think so," he acknowledged. "But maybe Tapu Bulu was just looking out for us. Because of Tapu Bulu's blessing we're fed, we've won some pretty tough fights…"

"And you got Irida goin' after your dick," Rapp teased.

Ian rolled his eyes and wordlessly got his bike back into motion. "That too I guess."

The junction wasn't that far off, and it was another half hour ride until the little town of Outrigger came into view on the horizon. Ian remembered looking at Mina's painted map of Ula'Ula in Guzma's throne room and noted the scale on the map was bigger than the actual town itself. It looked like there weren't even a hundred houses, but the town was much more spread out than Po Town on account of there being no need for a wall.

To one direction, Mt. Hokulani loomed overhead, with a quarter mile of mostly flat land before a sharp incline. To the other side of the town lay the sea, with a defiant brown rock sticking out of the ocean a half mile out from the beach. "That's a gnarly rock," Ian observed from a distance.

"They call it 'Breakwater Isle,'" Plumeria said.

"'Isle?'" Ian asked with a hint of amusement.

"Apparently it was a lot bigger years back. The waves and storms keep whittling away at it, so that rock is all that's left," Plumeria said. "There's supposed to be a lot of rock underneath the surface that disrupts the worst of the currents, making this the only place on the northern side of Ula'Ula where ships can dock safely."

Ian nodded, eyeing the rock jutting out of the sea with a newfound respect. He noticed something on the rock he didn't expect to see, a structure of some sort he was too far away to make out.

"Okay everyone, be cool when we get into town," Plumeria warned. "They're not hostile to us, but we're not exactly the most welcome group here either." Oh yeah, they do some business with Sinclair. "I'll do all of the talking when we get to the checkpoint. The bike shop's right next to the marina, so if we're allowed to buy the bikes we'll have Rapp go to the marina to find a boat mechanic on the down low."

"You sure you wanna send just me?" Rapp asked.

Plumeria shrugged. "Better chance you can sweet talk a mechanic. Also you're more likely to be believed if you get caught and say you got lost."

"Why's that, Big Sis?" Rapp asked.

Plumeria rolled her eyes, smiling wickedly. "Precisely."

It took only a couple minutes of riding before they got to their destination. Dozens of stacked sandbags cut off two edges of the road, narrowing the entryway to a dozen feet or so, with a gate blocking that, and multiple guards on watch. After a quick conversation, the squad rode into town behind an escorting guard's pickup truck, who led them to the very center of the sleepy town.

Ian saw maybe twenty people on the streets, and gasped when he saw a traffic light at the center of town, reminding himself he hadn't seen one since his arrival on Ula'Ula Island. Kinda crazy to believe there's a whole functioning society off this island. One day when things hopefully settle down I'll get to check it out.

The escort truck pulled up to an imposing two story building, and Ian spied a sigh reading "Outrigger City Hall." Since this is civilization after all, I wonder if they have a mayor? When the escort hopped out of the truck and said a few words to the building's own guard, who then disappeared inside.

"Who did you say was the leader here again?" Ian asked.

"Leilani," Plumeria said.

"Is she the mayor or something?" Ian asked.

"She's the strongest trainer in the town," Plumeria said. "And she's also Keahi's youngest sister."

Ian's eyebrows rose. Well that's interesting. Maybe Leilani knows where her sister went. "Was she in the Cinders with you guys?" Ian asked.

Plumeria scoffed. "Nope," Plumeria said as she fixated on the door as it opened, where one of the security guards beckoned them inside.

Once inside, the group was led into a recreation room where a number of town residents, mostly elderly, sat around tables playing various card games. Ian found a seat and tried to keep a low profile. Just in case Driftwood's bounty made it out here.

Tupp cleared his throat and tapped Ian's shoulder. "Hey bro, is that Grimsley over there?"

Ian turned around quickly, following the direction of Tupp's index finger only to recognize the dark haired man wearing a resplendent kimono. "Holy shit it is Grimsley," Ian said. Oh yeah, he did say he's been hanging around Outrigger for the war… and so does the Driftwood Guild.

"Hey Plumeria, I gotta say hi to Grimsley," Ian said.

"Okay," Plumeria said casually, but her expression told a very different story.

"Thanks," Ian said, giving her a wink to try to tell him he understood. Ian approached Grimsley's table, the three elderly folks with him had to be at least twice his age, and Ian cleared his throat to announce his arrival. Grimsley looked up from his hand of cards and chuckled.

"Well look who it is," Grimsley said with a smile. "Long time no see Ian."

Ian nodded. "Yeah, good to see you Grimsley."

"Sorry for the interruption, friends. I'd like you to introduce my student, Ian Cougar. They jokingly call him the Prince of Po Town," Grimsley said with a light chuckle.

"If your teaching is as wicked as you when you play cards, it's no surprise your student's become a prince of scoundrels," a pale elderly woman with white hair and wrinkled face teased.

"How is he as a Pokemon trainer?" An elderly man Ian could tell was of native descent.

Grimsley smiled with pride. "Well, I heard through the rumor mill he singlehandedly won the battle of Atman's Point."

"It wasn't singlehanded-"

"Atman's Point?" Said the fourth and oldest looking member of the table with a titter. She had the dark skin of a native Alolan, but looked significantly more wrinkled than the other two elders of the table. "Surely you mean Adaman's Point?"

"Who cares about the name?" The other elder woman commented.

Ian realized his jaw had dropped and his heart jolted at the name the elderly native woman said. "Wait, ma'am, you said 'Adaman's Point,' right?" Ian asked.

"Yes, where that little altar on Cape Pupuhi is?" The elderly native woman said.

Adaman, like the leader of the Diamond Clan, Adaman? It can't be the same guy-

"Kalele, it's your turn," the older man grumbled, turning to the elderly woman with dark skin.

"What's trump?" Kalele asked.

"Clubs," the elderly pale skinned woman said.

"Oh let me see…" Kalele murmured as she eyed her cards.

Ian looked at Grimsley intensely, pointing at Kalele and mouthing "I need to talk to her alone."

Grimsley rolled his eyes but shrugged, digging into his pocket for something before leaning back in his chair, then suddenly gasping as the chair fell backwards, causing Grimsley to hit the floor and roll over. "Oh, my head!" Grimsley wailed in mock pain.

The room's attention converged on the fallen Elite Four member, who wailed in pain once more before Ian noticed blood on his fingers. "You're bleeding?" Ian asked in shock.

Grimsley overtly winked at Ian before wailing in pain some more. "I think I need a nurse…" He just carries around fake blood? What a guy.

"Well, I guess the game's over for a bit," the elder man's voice from behind Ian said.

"Good, I gotta go pee anyways," the female voice he knew wasn't Kalele's said.

After the initial interest, the rec room had become surprisingly calm at Grimsley's seeming medical emergency. Or maybe it's because no one can hear anything. Ian noticed Plumeria getting up from her chair, concern on her face but he waved her off and mouthed "it's fine," to her, placating the squad leader.

Ian helped the two elderly members of the table from their chairs and took one of the seats next to the elderly Kalele.

"Excuse me, but aren't you going to help your cardshark friend?" Kalele said.

"No, he's just being overdramatic. He does this when he loses," Ian said.

"Oh, how cute," Kalele said bluntly before cackling at her own comment.

Ian waited for her to finish, then moved in close. "Ma'am, your name's Kalele, right?"

"Yes. And you are, young man?" Kalele asked.

"Ian, Grimsley's student…" Ian paused, realizing she might be having some short term memory problems. "Ma'am, earlier you said something about Adaman's Point?"

"Oh yes. Very beautiful," Kalele said. "But I haven't been to the altar for a while. I'm almost ninety you know."

"But everyone calls it 'Atman's Point,'" Ian said.

"Well that's because everyone nowadays shortens things, because they're lazy," Kalele said. "It was called Adaman's Point for the man who dwelled there, the same man who chiseled the altar there. He was quite chiseled himself-"

"Wait he was there? When? How recently?" Ian asked desperately.

Kalele grimaced sourly. "I know I am a slow speaker in my old age, but I ask you to not interrupt me, young man."

Ian froze, shaking his head. "I'm terribly sorry ma'am… This is just really fascinating to me."

"Good. Well, as I was saying… What was I saying?" Kalele asked.

"Chiseled?"

"Yes, chiseled. I heard it said he was the most handsome man the islands had ever seen, this Adaman. He wore a faded blue cloak wherever he went, and his hair was distinct; different colors that made him all the more exotic and alluring. But worry not young man, he won't be stealing any ladies from you now. He was in Alola before I was even born," Kalele explained.

"Then how did you know what he looked like?" Ian asked.

"My grandmother told me. If he had ended up staying here after carving his love letter into the altar, my grandmother wouldn't have married anyone else," Kalele continued.

"Love letter?" Ian asked.

"Yes… the man was from far away and had lost a great love. My grandmother thinks she came up with the name 'Weeping Ridge' overlooking Mahiki Bay because she saw him weeping on it a few times," Kalele explained. Holy…

"Did he ever mention the name of the woman he loved?" Ian asked curiously.

"Name? I think he put it in his love letter. Oh, it was such a pretty name. I believe it started with an 'I.' But my mind is so slippery…" Kalele said.

The altar did have something carved into it. Why didn't I LOOK? Ian's mind raced, thinking of all the bizarre things adding up suddenly. Adaman was on Ula'Ula, he hung around Mahiki Bay, mourning losing Irida? Why there- Ian gasped. Momi Isle… Momi means "pearl" in Alolan. He was looking directly at the Pearl Isle mourning losing Irida… Holy shit!

"Was it by chance 'Irida?'" Ian asked, afraid of the answer.

"Yes! That was it, Irida…" Kalele's elderly voice brightened up as she said the name. "So you were able to read the unknown language?"

"Unknown language? You mean the language isn't known?" Ian asked, suddenly confused.

"No, young man. Not Unknown. Unown, like the symbol Pokemon," Kalele said.

"Wow…" Ian said, realizing his mind couldn't even process that part.

"Ian!" Plumeria's voice called over. "They're ready for us in the council room!"

Ian nodded. "Just a minute!" He called over. Ian returned his attention to Kalele. "Ma'am, I have to go now, but I just want to say thank you so much for telling me this story."

Kalele smiled. "You're very welcome young man. And thank you for listening so attentively."

"It was my pleasure," Ian said sincerely.

"It's rare to find a man engrossed in love stories like you. I'd tell one of my descendants about you, but you're too young for my granddaughters, and too old for my great granddaughter," Kalele said.

"I'm honored by the offer ma'am, but I'll be alright," Ian said, chuckling lightly.

"You're a handsome young man. I'm sure you'll find your Irida some day," Kalele said.

Ian nearly choked on his own spit as he turned and headed out of the rec room, barely noticing the staff member tending to Grimsley. What the fuck was that conversation? Ian hurried to catch up, dashing down the hall to where he saw the doors Hyde entered into. He opened the door quickly, barging into the room he realized was more reminiscent of a court room, and the whole Team Skull squad glared at him in the silence of the chamber. Deeper into the room, Ian noticed three figures on the judge's benches glaring down at them, flanked by a half dozen trainers.

"Of course the tardy one's the useful one," a familiar, older feminine voice said. Ian turned to her and his eyebrows rose, seeing councilwoman Nui from Makamae Town on one of the judge's benches.

Ian smiled nervously. "Sorry I'm late, I was listening to a fascinating story from this sweet woman named Kalele," Ian explained.

"Kalele?" The feminine figure on the highest bench asked curiously, Ian noticing her flowery tunic. "My grandmother sure can go on."

Ian gulped. Good thing I didn't say anything bad. Wait, did I just speak with Keahi's grandmother? Damn. "I didn't want to leave too quickly," Ian said.

The head figure tittered. "Anyone who can withstand my grandmother's stories and be diplomatic about it is okay in my book. And what was your name, young man?"

Councilwoman Nui chimed "His name is-"

Leilani shot her cohort a disapproving look, shutting up the older native woman instantly. "My apologies young man, Nui here is still learning Outrigger's diplomatic decorum. What was your name again?"

"Ian. Ian Cougar," Ian said. I'm glad someone put that bitch Nui in her place. Ian noticed the woman holding court scribble something on a paper he couldn't see.

"As I told your comrades before, I am Leilani, the head trainer of Outrigger, and its protector. All of you in Team Skull are welcome here as long as you respect our strategic neutrality," Leilani explained. The native woman looked to be in her early thirties, but her sharp features and caramel colored skin made Ian blush slightly. He remembered to give a nod of respect and took a seat next to Tupp. Within a minute, Plumeria's request to purchase bicycles for the Pearl Clan turned into a debate on the strategic value of bicycles, which gave Ian time to let the revelations he'd just bore witness to simmer in his mind.

Ian was still lost in thought when Plumeria came to his and Tupp's row of chairs and cleared her throat, indicating they needed to move down a spot to make room for her. Tupp slid over, with Ian following as Plumeria made room.

"So is it over?" Ian asked.

Plumeria eyed him strangely. "They just said they're going to deliberate, were you not listening?"

Ian shook his head. "Sorry, just had my mind blown in there."

"Sounds it like it wasn't in the fun way," Tupp joked.

Plumeria glared daggers at Tupp, causing him to shrink in his seat. "So what was that thing in the rec room about? Grimsley okay?"

Ian shook his head, grinning as he remembered the diversion Grimsley had pulled off to get Ian some alone time with Kalele. "It was fake blood so I could talk to Leilani's grandmother alone."

Plumeria looked at him skeptically. "And what was so important about it that it needed a diversion like that?"

"Hard to explain…"

"Was it a Coogz thing?" Plumeria asked lowly.

Ian grimaced. "Maybe."

Plumeria maneuvered her head around Ian and pointed at Tupp, shooing him away with her hand.

"Aw c'mon Big Sis," Tupp grumbled.

"I don't care," Plumeria said bluntly, almost comically, making Ian grin. Don't start crushing on her again. Plumeria leaned in closely to Ian. "So what was it about?"

"You ever hear the name of Irida's lost love? The guy from her time?" Ian asked.

"No," Plumeria said. "Because someone didn't tell me."

Ian rolled his eyes. "I didn't think it was important."

"But it's important now?" Plumeria asked skeptically.

"I said 'maybe' for a reason," Ian said.

"So…?"

"Her old boyfriend's name is Adaman," Ian said.

"Okay," Plumeria said bluntly.

"Apparently after the Pearl Clan disappeared, he came to Alola. Over a century ago though," Ian said.

"I'm still not seeing the point," Plumeria whispered.

Ian smirked. "Ever hear about how 'Atman's Point got its name?"

"No," Plumeria said.

"Kalele said its real name is 'Adaman's Point but it got shortened to 'Atman's' because people are lazy," Ian explained. "Apparently he made the altar overlooking Momi Isle and inscribed something on the altar itself, specifically mentioning Irida."

Plumeria's eyebrows rose. "You're joking."

"It's what she said," Ian whispered defensively. "But the thing that really hammered it home is where the altar's facing."

"One of the islands…"

"Momi Isle, meaning 'Pearl Isle," Ian finished.

Plumeria gasped. "Woah…" She said under her breath. "That is… spooky." Plumeria pondered the revelation for half a minute before clearing her throat. "But Ian, how important is that to us right now? It doesn't explain the Ultra Rift, and it's not gonna help us against Sinclair."

Ian grimaced. "Yeah I know, but I got a gut feeling on it. It matters. There's something to this."

Plumeria nodded. "Fair enough. Just remember we still have a war going on."

"Of course," Ian said.

Once their request to purchase bicycles had been approved, the security guard in the pickup truck led the squad closer to the beach, where an old bike rental shop had fallen into slight disrepair. It was stocked with dozens of bikes, and Plumeria brought Tupp and Hyde in with her to make decisions about what they'd be buying, and Rapp went around the side to accidentally get lost and find her way to the marina, leaving Ian outside with Selene.

Ian tried to distract himself from looking too hard at Plumeria in the shop, instead shifting his focus to Breakwater Isle. Having a closer look at it helped Ian identify the structure near the top of the island, a hut, maybe even a cottage resting on top. Ian's study of Breakwater Isle was soon interrupted by Selene approaching him. "Not so fun being an outsider again, is it?"

Ian turned to her, slightly perturbed but also confused. "What do you mean by that? Me not being in the shop?"

"No, not that," Selene clarified. "I meant back in Po Town. Like I've become in this squad, you're the odd guy out in town now."

Ian paused, staring at Selene with great confusion. "In Po Town? Really?"

"Yeah. Haven't you noticed?" Selene asked.

"Not really…" Ian croaked. "I mean, I've noticed I'm getting some sour looks from folks because of the radio network making everyone work longer hours, but that's not a big deal."

Selene shook her head. "It shouldn't be a big deal, but it is. Rook's always had a circle of people close to him, but it's gotten really shady recently."

"Shady how?" Ian asked curiously, still not sure if Selene was feeding him a crock of shit.

"He's been having everyone in his inner circle work shorter shifts when watching the wall, and everyone who's not in it works longer hours. I heard him say 'thank the Prince of Po Town for us being so understaffed' when someone complained to him about it."

Ian grimaced. Rook really didn't like getting shown up in the strategy meeting… Or maybe there's something more to it. "With giving shorter shifts to loyalists and longer shifts to people he doesn't like, he's expanding his inner circle…" Ian speculated. Would he really try something like taking over Po Town? Cuz it sure is starting to seem like something's up with Rook. "Why haven't you brought this up with Plumeria?"

Selene shook her head. "It can't be me. They'll think I'm just some bitter girl who's making stuff up to mess with Rook."

Ian grimaced. Well that would make a lot of sense. "I see. But you're not exactly doing yourself any favors by pursuing Tupp now that Rook dumped you."

It was Selene's turn to grimace. "Not that it matters, but I broke it off with Rook actually."

"Really? Took you that long to figure out he was just a fuckboy?"

"He asked me what I'd think if Guzma no longer ran Po Town," Selene explained. "He didn't mention anything specific, but I could tell. He wants to run Po Town. That's when I realized everything about him was all wrong…"

"These are some pretty heavy accusations you're throwing at him," Ian said.

"When we first started fooling around he kept saying something about a 'demoralization process,'" Selene continued. "I think he's finally found a way to put it into action."

Ian gazed into Selene's dark eyes, not sure whether to believe her or not. Demoralization? That'd be the way to gain the loyalty of a good chunk of Team Skull members and displace Guzma… I remember in the strategy meeting I was thinking Rook's plan would basically kill our morale over time, just sitting back and letting Sinclair's goons attack us whenever they wanted to. Plus Rook had the latest strategy meeting with just the bones didn't he? Shit! Ian's body jolted as the realization hit him. He might've been planning this the entire time, like the key not being in the gate house on the night of their first attack.

"Ian?" Selene asked, worry in her voice.

Ian shook his head, sighing. "Selene, you might actually be right. Don't tell anyone about this yet. When we get back to Po Town, I'm gonna do some digging around. I'll mention this to Plumeria at some point, but just as speculation."

Selene nodded. "Thank you Ian. Anything I can do to thank you?"

Ian smirked. "Besides stop using Tupp as a rebound?"

A flare of anger came over Selene's face before it drooped in defeat. "I know it seems like it, but realizing Rook's just been looking out for himself and causing problems made me realize how good of a guy Tupp is…"

Ian shook his head. "Gonna take a lot more than that to win Tupp back," Ian said coldly.

"I know…" Selene said dejectedly.

Ian shook his head even more fiercely, anger rising in her voice. "I'm not sure you do though. You know what kind of guy Tupp is?" Ian asked rhetorically. "I've known him for two months, and he already wants to get matching tattoos that say 'bros for life.' The guy's saved my life multiple times and always has my back…" Ian paused. "He deserves a girl who loves him and appreciates that, not have him as a fucking rebound."

Selene nodded, her eyes beginning to water. "I know, and I swear it's not that-"

"It better not be," Ian said damningly. Having said what he needed to say, he turned away from Selene and made his way over to the bike shop's exterior, looking through the window, watching as their squad mates inspected the bike shop's wares. Out of the corner of his eye, Ian spotted a couple approaching figures, one being Leilani, and the other-

His blood had only begun to simmer down from how his conversation with Selene had ended, but now his blood boiled once more as his eyes landed upon the pink haired Driftwood Guild member beside Leilani. "NEROLI!" Ian roared.

The oncoming duo froze, completely taken aback. "We need to fucking talk, you and me!" Ian demanded as he began storming up the sidewalk.

Leilani held her arm out in front of Neroli and stepped in front of the Driftwood Guild member. "Young man, need I remind you this is an area of strategic neutrality? Behavior like this will not be tolerated in this town," Leilani announced, a deathly serious look in her eyes.

"Yeah I remember," Ian jabbed. "But I have a question for you. Does a one-hundred thousand dollar bounty on my head being offered to our enemies count as 'strategic neutrality' here?" Ian demanded calmly as he heard Selene dashing her way toward him.

Leilani turned to Neroli, deeply perplexed. "Neroli, is there any veracity to his statement?"

Neroli smiled nervously. "Well… kind of-"

Leilani gasped, taking a dramatic step back. You bitch.

"But let me explain! It's not like that," Neroli said, her hands up helplessly. "It wasn't his head, it was for him alive."

Ian folded his arms, scowling. "Explain?"

Neroli nodded, smiling even more nervously. "So, we hold no oaths above the island, that's our thing right? One of the things we do is trade food to independent groups, people not in any faction so they don't starve-"

"Yet you stopped accepting payment for food for the Pearl Clan. And from Sinclair's faction as well," Ian accused.

A nervous bead of sweat fell down Neroli's forehead. "Look, those decisions are made by my higher ups-"

"And who the hell are they?" Ian demanded.

"I can't say," Neroli said. "But they're looking out for you Ian, I promise. With that Sawsbuck, you can feed the island, you can help us survive no matter how bad this crisis gets. The island needs you two-"

Ian shook his head, remaining silent as Neroli's statement ran through his mind.

"Ian!" Plumeria barked as she dashed over, Hyde and Tupp on her heels. Plumeria stepped beside him, taking in the situation before looking at Ian to confirm.

"So, the bounty thing's true?" Plumeria asked knowingly.

"Kind of," Neroli said nervously, putting her hands up defensively again. "J-just for him… alive. They would've gotten nothing if he were… uh, killed."

Plumeria growled under her breath. "Do you realize the target you put on my subordinate's back? The one keeping Po Town alive?"

"It wasn't the higher ups' intention, I promise," Neroli said desperately.

Plumeria scoffed as she took a step forward, her pink and yellow hair billowing in the wind. "And this is why I don't trust you fuckers. Underhanded snakes, the lot of you."

Neroli quivered with fear. "I'm sorry this all went down this way, I really didn't intend on this to…" Neroli trailed off as she looked into Leilani's intimidating eyes.

"Neroli, I think it's best you leave Outrigger," Leilani said coldly.

"Yeah, I will. I'll get right on it…" Neroli said, staggering backwards before walking in a hurry away from the group.

Leilani sighed, directing her attention to Plumeria and the rest of the crew. "On behalf of Outrigger, I deeply apologize for you having to endure that," Leilani said solemnly. "It was not our intention to harbor someone with designs against your side of the conflict."

"We understand," Plumeria said coldly.

Leilani nodded. "I thank you for your understanding, and for not escalating things within our territory. I understand why you would want to," Leilani explained.

"You're welcome," Plumeria said. "Now that our business is concluded, it's probably best we get moving too, right?"

Leilani shrugged. "Well, that depends. Someone has asked to see you all, and if you're interested, I would be happy to take you to them."

Plumeria turned to her group, gauging the mood. "Sure why not? They up the street or something?"

"Not quite," Leilani said, turning her head to the sea, with Ian realizing she was looking right at Breakwater Isle.

"And who's this person who wants to speak to us?" Plumeria asked.

Leilani turned her gaze back to Plumeria and Ian, a deeply serious look on her face.

"Keahi."

Chapter 38: Keahi New

Oceanside Lowlife

Bug Catcher
Chapter 38: Keahi

"Keahi? She's here?" Plumeria asked in shock.

"Well, she's banished from the island by Tapu Bulu," Leilani explained. "But she's allowed on Breakwater Isle, and there she has dwelled since this all began. I ask that no one reveal her presence here to the rest of the island. She doesn't exactly have a lot of fans on the island anymore."

Ian realized his mouth was open and promptly closed it. Keahi… She's here? Or at least we have the ability to talk to her? Ian's initial excitement was suddenly quashed as a sudden realization hit him. She's the former Kahuna, and there are people on this island who think I'M in line to be the next one. Something tells me she might not be too happy to see me. The initial excitement to ask questions to likely the most knowledgeable source on the island quickly turned to nervous dread.

Ian remained silent as Leilani led them down to the marina and coincidentally found Rapp. The group marched single file to a dock where a man lounged on a chair reading a book with a collection of beer cans on the table to his side.

"Melville, you ready?" Leilani called out casually as she approached.

The man flailed in his seat, startled and dropped his book on the dock. "Whoops, didn't think I'd be going back to Breakwater again so quickly, Leilani," the older man with a grey beard said, bending over to get his book and whincing, having seemingly lost his place. "I suppose I'll get that later," Meliville grumbled.

Leilani sighed. "Everything's still prepared though?"

"Yes indeed," Melville grumbled. "Even got the hydrosonic emitter ready to go. There's been a Wailord sighting and I don't want it getting too friendly with the White Wake."

"White Wake?" Selene asked.

Melville pointed to the sail boat at the end of a nearby dock. "That there boat we're taking."

Ian looked to Plumeria and cleared his throat. "What was that hydrosonic thing he said?"

Plumeria smirked, seemingly remembering how little Ian actually knew about the world. "It helps keep dangerous Pokemon away from boats using sound waves."

"Neat," Ian said.

After getting aboard and helping push off from the dock, the group was sailing. Ian's curiosity got the better of him and he made his way to the sailboat's wheel, where Melville stood slightly unsteadily. He did have quite a few beer cans on that table. Wonder how many of them were empty?

"You're Melville, right?" Ian asked.

The older man nodded. "That's me."

"The emitter you were talking about-"

"The hydrosonic emitter? What about it?" Melville grumbled.

"What Pokemon around here does it keep away?" Ian asked.

"Mostly Gyarados, Sharpedo, and Wailord. Sometimes we'll get Alpha Tentacruel or a particularly aggressive school of Wishiwashi, but those aren't too common," Melville explained. "Only thing it doesn't work on is an Alpha Gyarados. Those things will get so riled up it'll attack whatever the source is."

Ian's mind pictured the cracks in Wartortle's shell for a moment before he spoke again. "Are there any Alpha Gyarados nearby that you know of?"

"Oh yeah, a real feisty one just off the coast from you guys," Melville said. "I warned Sinclair about it the last time he came through, but he didn't seem too worried about it. If it's still there, it's a nice bit of defense for you guys."

Ian grimaced. Maybe they neutralized it? "They don't come around here though?" Ian asked.

"Every so often, so that's why most ships' crews have an Electric Type Pokemon," Melville continued. "They don't teach that in Unova?"

Ian grimaced. "Something like that."

"Well, best keep your mouth around Ms. Keahi, she's not a big fan of Unovans," Melville said.

Great, please don't be another Hyde.

Minutes later Melville had the boat tied to Breakwater Isle's shoddy dock. Ian noticed a steep pathway of stairs carved into the rock running along its face, leading up to the top where Keahi's cottage sat.

"Be careful going up the stairs!" Melville warned as he whipped out a folding chair and a beer can he had hidden.

Leilani led the way, with Hyde on her heels. He'd been notably quiet since getting disqualified from consideration from Irida's hand, so seeing him with a spark in his step made Ian optimistic his former hater might still remain a former hater. Ian's stomach grew increasingly fluttery with every step closer they got to the cottage. He picked up the rear of the party, now dreading the interaction with the woman whose presence was felt across the island, even though she hadn't been on it for a number of months.

Upon reaching the top, Leilani made the group wait as she walked solemnly to the door, knocking on it. "Some former Cinders of yours are here to see you." Ian expected the door to open from the inside, but Leilani opened it herself and entered, closing it behind her quickly.

Ian took a look around the top of the rock that was Breakwater Isle, noting a gaunt, aged tree made of pale wood, leaning over as if a strong breeze would finally knock it over. How a tree sprouted up here is a mystery to me, plus I haven't seen a tree that looks remotely like that since I arrived in Alola.

Ian's focus on the pale tree was interrupted when Leilani re-opened the door and signaled the group to enter the little cottage. Ian felt his heartbeat quicken as he followed his comrades into the small cottage. The inside was decently illuminated, with a few windows and a fireplace in one corner, a flame Ian recognized as made by a Pokemon keeping it passively burning with no fuel. Like the streetlamps in Makamae Town and torches in Fort Acuity the Pearl Clan use. A large green armchair faced the fireplace, with a wooden loveseat opposite the armchair but facing the flames as well. A few cabinets seemingly functioned as a kitchen, and on the far side of the house was what looked to be a single bed, with dozens of plastic water jars at its foot.

"Welcome, friends and strangers," a deep, feminine voice called out from the green armchair.

"Keahi…" Plumeria said weakly before losing her will to speak.

Keahi tittered in her chair as Leilani stepped past Ian and made her way to Keahi's chair. The older sister rose from her seat and took her place beside Leilani. Where Leilani's tunic was blue with various flowers, Keahi wore a deep green dress with bright red and yellow flowers dotted across, each flower sticking out like a flame on the material. Keahi's face was the spitting image of Leilani's just a decade older, more weathered with wrinkles, and with sad, orange eyes. "Barely seven months and you have all changed so much," Keahi observed as she stepped to the squad.

The six squad members instinctively lined up side by side, with Ian at the far side while Keahi went to Plumeria first. "Plumeria, you've done so well. Better than I even hoped you would do," Keahi said, embracing the squad leader. Plumeria tensed up, but quickly returned Keahi's affection.

Next she came to Hyde, making Keahi tittered knowingly. "Hyde, ever the protector. Every group needs its skeptical cynic."

Hyde nodded respectfully as Keahi put her hand on his shoulder, seemingly blessing him. She stepped to Tupp and Rapp, smiling proudly. "Tanner, Seraphine, my how you've grown."

Tanner? Tupp's real name is Tanner? Ian almost facepalmed. Jeez, he's my best friend and I didn't even know his real name. I'm the bad friend here. "Good to see you again, Keahi," Tupp stammered nervously.

"Yeah…" Rapp echoed.

Keahi outstretched her arms for both of them, having both of them rest their heads on her shoulders for a few moments before withdrawing and moving to Selene. Ian gulped nervously. I'm next.

"I don't believe we've formally met," Keahi said.

"We haven't, but I saw you once. I was on an Island Challenge before things went bad, and you greeted some of us in Malie City," Selene explained. "You were really kind and welcoming."

Keahi smiled knowingly once more. "And what was your name, dear?"

"Selene," she said.

"Oh. Kukui's cousin," Keahi said. "It's a shame we didn't get to meet until now. He raved about you all through your challenge, you know."

Selene giggled. "Yeah…"

"Have you been able to inform him you're safe?" Keahi asked.

"I wrote a letter and gave it to the Driftwood Guild, telling them where I was and that I was safe," Selene said. "I should send another one though."

Keahi nodded. "My little sister might be able to help them get a letter back to you at some point. I'm sure your family misses you dearly."

Selene nodded. "I miss them too…"

Keahi nodded, putting her hand on Selene's shoulder as well, seemingly blessing her. Keahi then took a deep breath and stepped to Ian, her fiery orange eyes probing his form. "And you…" Keahi said intensely.

Ian gulped, remaining silent.

"You are the one with the blessed Sawsbuck?" Keahi asked grimly.

Ian nodded. "Yes ma'am," he said nervously.

Keahi shook her head before turning away and stepping back to Leilani. "Tapu Bulu blesses a Pokemon often found in Unova for Unovan trainer. How funny," Keahi said, with no subtle bitterness in her tone.

"Keahi," Plumeria spoke nervously. "Ian's not like most Unovans."

Keahi turned to Plumeria, the room tensing. "I shall be the judge of that, Plumeria." Keahi cleared her throat and faced the rest of the group. "Friends, I do apologize for the lack of courtesy, but I must speak to Ian alone."

Plumeria began to protest but stopped, waving the rest of the squad through the door they'd entered, leaving just Keahi, Leilani, and Ian. "Dear sister, that means you too."

Leilani gasped. "Sister-"

"Alone," Keahi said deeply, authoritatively.

Leilani hmph'd but did as her sister had bid, opening the front door and slamming it. Ian felt nervous beads of sweat begin to drip down his forehead and back before realizing Keahi had taken roost in her green armchair. "Come closer to the fire, Ian."

Ian gulped nervously, stepping slowly as his heart pounded. This must be what if feels like to be on trial.

"Have a seat," Keahi said coldly, her hand gesturing to the rug. Ian eyed the loveseat now behind him, but did as the former Kahuna directed, taking an uncomfortable seat on the rug. "You are afraid," Keahi observed. "I'm sure you're aware you are in no physical danger, as the bonds with my Pokemon have been severed, and they no longer take my commands. The fire is a friend's Pokemon's."

Ian nodded. "I think I'm afraid of disappointing you, which I feel like I already have."

Keahi tittered before firing back with intensity. "Why would a Unovan care about an Alolan being disappointed in them?"

Ian shook his head. "It sounds like the Unova I'm from is a bit different than this world's Unova. From what little I've heard, Unova has mistreated Alola for a long time."

"Ignorance can only excuse you so much," Keahi stated. "But I shall humor you." Keahi paused, then smiled, seemingly amused by something. "Plumeria came to your defense. How well do you know her, young Ian?"

A myriad of memories flashed before his eyes, with Plumeria's sobs and her desperate plea for him to stay with Team Skull echoing in his mind. "Pretty well…"

"Then you understand that her coming to your defense is the greatest endorsement one can receive in your situation?" Keahi asked.

Ian nodded. "Yeah."

"Explain to me how you know," Keahi ordered.

"Uh, sure…" Ian said nervously, feeling her piercing orange eyes investigating every muscle in his face for a sign of dishonesty. "Po Town took me in even though I have a Unovan accent and Hyde even thought I was a spy, and our food was running low. The next Ultra Storm we went to investigate, a little girl named Rylee appeared in it. She's only seven years old and would just be another mouth to feed, but it wasn't a question. We were gonna take her in," Ian explained. "I've been around Po Town long enough to know that's a policy Plumeria does not negotiate on, and it sounds like she got it from the Cinder- Your Cinders, I mean."

"Hmm…" Keahi began, sounding pleased. "You are correct. It took her some time to get comfortable enough to join the Cinders, but when she did, I didn't reach out to her to mentor her very much."

"Can I ask why?" Ian asked.

Keahi smiled warmly. "There was little for me to teach her. I had little time to waste then, and I knew Plumeria would carry on the legacy of the Cinders when I was gone."

Ian nodded. "Gone… So did you know you were going to be exiled?"

Keahi shook her head as she tittered loudly. "For what I was about to do, I figured I would be dead."

"Oh…" Ian said.

Keahi exhaled. "Well young Ian, let's make a deal. Tell me the story of how your Sawsbuck became blessed, and you may ask me any question you desire."

Ian nodded. "That'd be great…" When was the last time I told this story? I think it was Mina? Yeah… And before that it was Colress. A shiver went down Ian's spine at the thought of the sinister scientist likely from beyond the Ultra Rift. Maybe I should tell her there's something suspicious about him before I leave.

He began the story, mentioning it was only his fourth day in Alola and how he saw Surge's Zapdos, and then somehow the convoy sniffed them out. Keahi seemed particularly interested in how they were found out, which Ian had no clue since he was dozens of feet up a tree. When Ian recalled Hyde was the first one running away, she stopped her line of questioning though.

He continued on to the frantic chase, where the man known as Wayne followed him instead of Tupp and made mince meat of his team except for Deerling, but Ian lost its Heal Ball in the commotion as he fled to the Lake of the Sunne. Then came the pivotal moment where Wayne had Ian cornered, Deerling's leg was snapped, and he faced certain execution, only to be saved by Tapu Bulu's appearance.

"I didn't realize Tapu Bulu was there, at the moment all I cared about was checking on Deerling," Ian recalled. "So when Tapu Bulu let out its shriek I realized I was dead meat. One of its hands turned green, like it was about to use Leaf Blade to execute me…"

"Mmmhmmm…" Keahi affirmed.

"...but then Deerling, his leg snapped, in agonizing pain, pleaded for my life. A Pokemon I'd known for two days, looked a Legendary Pokemon in the eye and pleaded for my life to it, in a place I knew I wasn't supposed to be…" Ian paused, processing the full emotions of the act. "I'm not sure what I did to deserve Deerling's loyalty. I mean, sure I saved it from Guzma's Alpha Ariados, but it's not the same level, you know what I mean?"

"Maybe," Keahi offered, clearly captivated by the story.

"Well, Tapu Bulu's green hand turned into a swirl of colors, and Deerling started floating and began to glow and…" Ian paused, picturing the moment his blessed Sawsbuck had appeared from the glowing light of the blessed evolution. "...I didn't realize it at the time, but blessed Sawsbuck appeared. I bowed my head and thanked Tapu Bulu, but it wanted us to leave, which makes sense. We did, and when Tupp found me and Sawsbuck, Tapu Bulu appeared, returning Sawsbuck's Heal Ball. It was the only way Tupp believed I encountered Tapu Bulu."

Keahi tittered. "Have you seen Tapu Bulu since?"

Ian nodded. "We were in the Haina Desert, I was training while watching the camp when Tapu Bulu appeared. I think it wanted to battle Sawsbuck, but Sawsbuck was still wounded from the day's events."

"What happened there?" Keahi asked bluntly.

"Breon's goons abducted Rapp, and Sawsbuck and I went in pursuit. Sawsbuck fought off two adversaries by itself, and saved me from a Manectric's Thunder Bolt a little while later," Ian said.

"So, Tapu Bulu's new chosen," Keahi said, a hint of disappointment in her voice. "I suppose some intelligent Unovan has come here to show us primitive Alolans what a real Kahuna should be like?" Keahi accused.

Ian grimaced. "Not at all ma'am… I'm an infant in this land and in this world. Sure, Ted Beaumont of the Rough Raiders seems to think I'm next in line to be the Kahuna, and he suspects the Driftwood Guild was trying to help me at one point. Thanks to their bounty on me I don't think they are anymore. But ultimately, I haven't heard where Nanu is, so he's likely the Kahuna, and even if he weren't, I'm in no way fit to have that title."

"Then what was the meaning behind Tapu Bulu's blessing?" Keahi asked, her tone quite different from her prior accusation.

"Well, maybe it just wanted to help a poor trainer and his wounded Pokemon…" Ian said. "Grassy Surge helping us grow food is a great byproduct of the blessing. But thanks to Sawsbuck, Po Town isn't starving, neither is the Pearl Clan, and Sawsbuck has been instrumental in winning a number of battles where lives were at stake."

"Interesting…" Keahi said. "So what's stopping you from taking this gift from Alola and maximizing its ability? Why aren't you going to Malie City to make a profit off of Sawsbuck's ability, which you surely could?"

Ian grinned, remembering Ingo's guiding words. "I'm a Faller as you know, and I was able to meet someone who was a Faller as well, but they'd been in their situation much longer," Ian explained. "He was lucky enough to meet someone who had a lot of experience with Fallers, away from their place, away from their time. He got some great advice from them, advice that comforted him in his darkest times, and he was able to pass that on to another Faller and then to me…" Ian said, closing his eyes, trying to imagine the turmoil Rei, the Legends Arceus protagonist, had endured to necessitate Ingo giving the advice.

"And what was this advice?" Keahi asked curiously.

"Go to where your heart leads, and once there, do the most good you can," Ian said. "Sure, Po Town isn't the most comfortable, and we're at war, and there's all this bullshit going on…" Ian paused. "...but I've made friends I already know I'll have for life. Tupp wants to get matching tattoos saying 'Bros for life,' even," Ian said as he chuckled at the thought. "I think I'm in love this girl, that helps-"

"Plumeria?" Keahi asked curiously.

Ian felt his cheeks warm as he tensed. "No, but I admire her deeply."

"And if these people were to leave Po Town, would you stay?" Keahi asked.

"I think I would," Ian said. "We're doing good things in Po Town, I have a greater purpose there than I've ever had. Plus we take in the outcasts, the Fallers from other worlds. I'm a Faller myself, yes, but I'm from a very different world from this one. And there's a little girl, only seven years old who's from a very different world from this as well, and when she's older she's going to have problems reconciling that. It's gonna really mess with her. But if I'm around, she'll know she's not alone, and when she's older she'll understand someone else was going through the same thing, and if I'm okay, that means she'll be okay…" Ian paused. "It's not something I can walk away from easily."

"Hmmm…" Keahi hummed pensively. "Po Town's lucky to have someone like you looking out for it."

Ian bowed his head graciously for a moment, waiting on Keahi's next words.

"As far as Sawsbuck's blessing, has it used any special moves?" Keahi asked.

"Special moves?" Ian asked.

"Pokemon blessed by Legendaries usually inherit a power from that legendary," Keahi explained. "For Pokemon blessed by Tapu Bulu, it would be Nature's Madness, although I'm not sure how Sawsbuck would use it. Maybe it will learn something more fitting…"

Ian nodded. "I'll keep an eye out for it as Sawsbuck and I grow."

"I've heard what I've needed to hear from you," Keahi asked. "I take it you have questions for me?"

Ian nodded. "Yeah, quite a few…"

"Then let's be quick about them," Keahi said.

Ian cleared his throat. "Why did you attack the Lake of the Sunne? I've gathered it had something to do with Alola's 'Original Sin' as you called it-"

"It had everything to do with it," Keahi said.

"Plumeria said that what little she knew about it, she believed it was the cause of Alola having Ultra Wormholes long before the Ultra Rift occurred," Ian said.

"You have sharp ears, young one," Keahi said. "Alola's 'Original Sin' is not something I disclose lightly, even for trainers recognized by Tapu Bulu, as it is a very dangerous secret."

"Yet you declared it," Ian said, realizing he was a bit more blunt than he'd anticipated.

"Just its existence," Keahi replied. "Finally you speak to me without fear."

"So Keahi… You were going to destroy the Original Sin, so Alola knowing about its existence wouldn't matter. It would've been a moot point… But you didn't succeed."

"I did not," Keahi said. "Which is why it must remain a closely guarded secret," Keahi said.

"Your top four Cinders knew, didn't they?" Ian asked.

Keahi's eyebrows rose. "Very sharp ears."

"Rook told me that," Ian said.

Keahi grimaced. "One of my mistakes, that man. I was afraid you might be similar to him."

Ian shook his head. "I'm certainly not that." Ian paused, getting back to the original point. "But why destroy the Original Sin? Did you lose someone, like Plumeria did?"

Keahi's head lowered. "Yes, I did. My sister."

Leilani? Wait-

"Nalani," Keahi said, emotion bubbling up in her tone. "Older than Leilani, she went missing in an Ultra Wormhole."

"That's horrible," Ian said.

"She'd wanted to visit the Aether Paradise, she'd always been fascinated by the foundation itself. Our tour guide had us meet Mohn, the president of Aether. He'd just come back from paternity leave, his youngest daughter had been born. Nalani had won a prize for answering a question and was on stage with Mohn when something appeared behind them, a crack in reality. Before I could realize what was happening, Nalani pushed Mohn off the stage, but she was taken into the Ultra Wormhole that had manifested. I never saw her again."

"I'm sorry to hear that," Ian said.

"So was Mohn. He wanted to honor her, start a scholarship fund for kids from Ula'Ula in her name. He wanted to comfort my family, he needed to comfort my family…" Keahi explained. "But I was angry. Every time I looked into his joyful green eyes I would become enraged…" Keahi paused. "It didn't dawn on me until recently that Nalani didn't want a little baby girl out there to lose their father to the great beyond…" Keahi paused, Ian watching a tear drip down from her eye. "It was so like her…" Keahi wiped the tears from her eyes and shook her head. "I was so upset I had lost my sister, I couldn't be comforted. I needed to do something…"

Ian nodded, trying to show he was still listening attentively.

"So I trained my Pokemon hard. Harder than ever before. Po Town had always been a place where trainers on their Island Challenges could get stuck, lost, or hurt, so forming the Cinders and making Po Town a haven for outcasts made sense. I suppose building that community and becoming that strong made me worthy to become the Kahuna, so when Lord Tapu burned its seal into my palm…" Keahi raised her hand, showing a tiki-like design on her right palm. "...and I was told why my sister was taken, it re-ignited those fires in my veins. And that rage drove me to bring my inner four Cinders to the Lake of the Sunne and try to destroy the altar at its center." Keahi paused, taking a deep exhale. "Even now I would drift back to my dreams of how Alola would be if Nalani and Mohn had switched places, if it was Mohn who went away."

Ian gulped nervously. So that's what sets this world apart from the Sun and Moon games. Wow…

"Do you have any questions not pertaining to the 'Original Sin,' young Ian?" Keahi asked.

"Kinda," Ian said. "You've been more than accommodating, Keahi," Ian paused. "But the other three Cinders who went to the Lake of the Sunne with you, what happened to them?"

Keahi sighed. "I instructed them to follow the next Kahuna, whoever it was, and help support them. The Ultra Rift had just appeared, and I was no longer the island's Kahuna."

Ian nodded. "So they went to Nanu?"

"Yes," Keahi said.

"And Nanu disappeared…" Ian said, realizing Keahi likely knew what really happened.

"He didn't abandon us," Keahi assured him. "He did what he thought could solve the problem."

"Which was?" Ian asked.

"He went to the Ultra Rift itself," Keahi said. "My three Cinders watched him get absorbed into it… He has yet to return. If the Ultra Rift ever fixes itself inexplicably, we'll know he succeeded," Keahi said bluntly. "If he's still alive, I know he's working on a way to fix things. We just have no way of knowing…"

Ian nodded. "So I gotta ask. What happened to the Cinders? The other three in your main group."

Keahi tittered knowingly. "Nothing gets past you, I'll give you that, young Ian," Keahi said. "They're supporting the island in a different way now. Maybe one day you will run into them."

Ian nodded. "I'll tell 'em you said hello."

Keahi laughed harder, a bit more knowingly. "Is there anything else I can answer for you, Ian?"

Ian wracked his brain. Sure he wanted to pick her brain on the war with Sinclair, or about Rook's true intentions. Her praising Plumeria and trashing Rook should be all I need to know from her on that though. If time's an issue, there's only one thing I can say to her.

"Have you heard of a man named Colress?"

Keahi nodded. "I have, he was a new Aether Foundation scientist when I met him a few months before the Ultra Rift opened up."

Ian nodded, taking a deep breath. If there's anyone who will understand, it'll be her. "When I was in Makamae Town, underneath the Ultra Rift, we met Colress, although he said he was a Faller," Ian began. "He seemed pretty fishy, he had loads of treasure and resources as well as extremely powerful Pokemon. He said he came from an Ultra Wormhole but he had his memory, and I remember him not knowing what an Ultra Storm was, so he couldn't have come from one of those either."

"Odd," Keahi said, reserved.

"I think he came from the Ultra Rift itself," Ian said. "He was like a walking red flag. He saw Sawsbuck when we first met and tried to get me to go with him to civilization," Ian continued. "At first he said he came to this world by accident, but near the end of our time escorting him to Malie City, he implied he had friends in the city who would help us."

"You're right to be skeptical," Keahi said.

"But he finally unmasked himself before he left…" Ian paused, a shiver running down his spine as he remembered the intensely malicious look on the scientist's face as he gave Ian his parting speech. "He showed me a picture of something called Cosmog-"

Keahi gasped, causing Ian to stop. "Cosmog… Are you serious?"

Ian tensed. "Yes. This Faller Colress showed it to me on this device he had with him. He had a picture of it and a Pokedex entry," Ian said. It's not a lie but it's not the entire truth. "He said he was looking for it, it and a certain object as well."

"Object… like an instrument?" Keahi asked cautiously.

"No, it was some orb… He called it the 'Master Orb. Said it could bend any Pokemon to the holder's will, even Legendary Pokemon," Ian said. "He told me if I could bring either of those things to him, the reward would be beyond my wildest dreams."

"Temptation…" Keahi said stoically.

Ian shook his head. "I don't know what his plans are, but whatever they are, nothing good is going to come from them," Ian concluded. "I'm not sure how much you'll be able to do with this-"

Keahi held her hand up to halt him. "I will be able to use this information, Ian," Keahi said. "I can tell the truth of your words by how gravely serious you are when you speak them. Now I must ask you, who else have you told about this?"

"I told Plumeria about Cosmog, but that's it," Ian said.

"And she knows not to disclose its existence to anyone?" Keahi asked.

"Basically… I can reconfirm that though," Ian said.

"Do so. As for the Master Orb…" Keahi paused. "...do not speak of it to anyone. If what that Faller Colress says is true, it's something that must be destroyed on sight."

Ian nodded. "Got it. I haven't told Plumeria about that one. It feels like cursed knowledge…"

"It is," Keahi said, getting up from her chair. Ian watched her green dress seemingly drift over the wood floor as she made for her bedside table. Ian heard a drawer open, and Keahi returned to him. "Rise, young Ian," Keahi ordered, holding something in her hand.

Ian did as ordered, still quite unsure of what Keahi had planned. "Hold out your hand," Keahi ordered. Ian did so, and she grabbed his palm as her other hand placed a bracelet on his wrist. Wait, is this a Z-Ring?

"K-Keahi-"

"Sssshhh," Keahi sounded as she latched the bottom of the Z-Ring into place.

"Keahi, I… I don't know what to say," Ian mumbled.

Keahi eyed him, her fiery orange eyes reflecting the glare of the fireplace, making her irises seemingly dance. "I have no use for this. And while no Kahuna protects this island, use this Z-Ring to protect Po Town, to protect my friends."

Ian gulped, nodding stiffly.

"Now go. And keep that blessed stag of yours safe," Keahi commanded with a proud grin.

"Yes ma'am," Ian said seriously. Ian bowed his head respectfully and turned for the door. As he opened it to the brighter Alolan sun, he remembered something. I never referred to Sawsbuck as a "blessed stag" to her, did I?

The people outside of Keahi's cottage had circled around Leilani as a garbled message from a walkie talkie she held up to her ear came through. Ian approached slowly, and Ian noticed a lot of tense faces.

"Oh Ian, you're back," Selene whispered, pointing at Ian.

"What's going on?" Ian whispered back.

"Weather forecast," Selene said.

They're this serious about a weather forecast? The fuck?

"...the storm has officially been downgraded to a category one hurricane as it approaches Poni Island, but a storm of that intensity will be extremely dangerous, according to the Alolan Weather Service," the garbled voice from the walkie talkie finished.

"So what are they recommending we do?" Leilani said.

"Stay away from the coast for storm surges, but stay away from elevated terrain since there'll be a high risk of landslides," the male voice said.

Leilani gave a frustrated sigh. "We're stuck between the coast and a mountain, so do we just hunker down and take it?"

"Seems like the only way, unless you wanna ask Malie City for refuge," the voice said.

"No can do," Leilani said. "Maybe we can arrange for our sick and elderly to temporarily be placed there, but anything more than that will have Surge on our ass."

"We could always ask Driftw-" Leilani pressed a button on the walkie-talkie, covering the transmission with annoyingly loud static. Leilani turned to Plumeria and shook her head. "He doesn't know about that incident."

Plumeria nodded sternly.

Leilani turned off the forced static and smiled sweetly. "Sorry Tibs, I'm still with Team Skull out here and I don't want any strategic information getting out."

"Shit, sorry Leilani. That's all I got," the voice said before cutting out.

Plumeria sighed loudly, her resting scowl face twisting even more intensely. "This storm's really on track to hit us?"

"Yeah," Leilani said. "It swerved at the last minute and now is coming straight for Alola. I know you guys will have it even rougher than we will."

Plumeria nodded. "Yeah. Luckily there's only so much that the storm can damage."

"Better hope it stays safe then," Leilani said with a nervous grin. Leilani then turned to Ian. "I see my sister's done with you?"

Ian nodded. "Yeah…"

"No way, is that a Z-Ring?" Rapp demanded.

The group gasped, and Ian noticed Plumeria's jaw dropped.

Leilani was the first to speak. "Is that-"

Ian nodded stoically. "Yeah… She gave it to me."

"She approves of you," Leilani commented. "Surprising."

Ian smiled nervously. "I had a really good endorsement," he said as his eyes drifted to Plumeria, who let up her scowl if only for a moment.

"We goin' back to Po Town to do this storm prep?" Hyde declared loudly.

"Yeah, we ought to get going," Plumeria said.

***

The ride down the road to Po Town was pretty smooth, with Rapp proudly announcing she'd found a boat mechanic that could likely help them. The wind had calmed to an almost eerie degree, almost reinforcing that a major storm was headed their way. When they got off to take a break near Litleo's Hollow, Ian took Plumeria aside.

"Selene told me some troubling stuff while you were in the bike shop," Ian said grimly.

"What?" Plumeria asked.

"She said Rook's been acting really suspicious," he replied.

Plumeria grimaced. "Probably just bitter."

Ian shook his head. "I'll tell you more when we're alone, but there are some things I noticed that aren't lining up," Ian began. "I think he might've hid the key to opening the front gate on the night we were attacked by Sinclair."

Plumeria's eyebrows rose. "That's a hefty accusation."

Ian nodded. "I know, but all I'm gonna say is watch him closely. He's got his little group, and Selene says he's lowering hours for loyalists and upping hours for people on watch duty who aren't in his 'in' group. I want to verify things myself, but you'd be able to find more out I reckon."

Plumeria nodded. "Okay… I'll look, but we gotta be discreet about this. Most of the Team Skull members from the Cinders days think highly of Rook. We'll be making Guzma look insecure if he finds out what we're doing."

Ian nodded. "I know Selene's not the most reliable source-"

Plumeria shook her head. "No, it's something I've noticed but didn't want to consider as a possibility. With all of the storm prep we'll have to do, I should be able to get a decent read on things without drawing too much attention."

Ian nodded, holding his fist out, which Plumeria pounded.

"And don't tell Rook that you met with Keahi," Plumeria added. "It'll make things awkward."

Ian nodded, then remembered what Keahi had told him to tell Plumeria. "Will do. And Keahi wanted me to tell you something too."

"Oh?"

"That Pokemon that evolves into Lunala?" Ian asked. "Cosmog? Don't mention it to anyone. Keahi got deathly serious about no one else knowing about it."

Plumeria nodded. "Gotcha Coogz," Plumeria gave him a pat on the shoulder and a subtle wink before turning away. "Break time's over, we got shit to do when we get back to Po Town!" Plumeria barked.

Chapter 39: Tempest New

Oceanside Lowlife

Bug Catcher
Chapter 39 Tempest

When Ian saw Po Town's walls in the distance he smiled. After asking Plumeria to look into Rook's suspicious behavior, he was able to replay the conversation with Keahi in his head. Considering how much I started to dread it on the boat ride to Breakwater Isle and how hostile she seemed to me being Unovan, her giving me her own Z-Ring at the end is a pretty big deal.

"Yo bro," Tupp said harshly. "You know how to use that Z-Ring?"

Ian shook his head. "I mean, not really. Gotta learn some weird poses, right?"

"Poses? What?" Tupp asked in bewilderment. Tupp then gasped as the lightbulb hit him and he moved his bike closer to Ian and lowered his voice. "Wait, was that how they did it in those video games you played?"

"Yeah, but they seemed kinda silly," Ian said.

"Hella silly, yo," Tupp said.

"Speaking of silly," Ian said, remembering something coming across his mind. "I thought I was your bro for life and I didn't know your real name's Tanner?"

Tupp cackled incessantly. "Yeah bro, it's pretty lame. Been Tupp since I was runnin' amok around Tapu Village."

"Why Tupp?" Ian asked.

"It's my initials," he said. "Tanner Uriah Porter."

"No shit…" Ian said, realizing that it did in fact make sense.

"But I'm Tupp, yo," Tupp clarified.

"Got it," Ian said.

As they closed in on Po Town, Plumeria slowed to match pace with Ian and pointed to the small camp outside of the crop fields where a couple Pearl Clan tents rose up, where the assistant patrols stayed. "So about the Pearl Clan…"

"What about 'em?" Ian asked.

"Storm's gonna fuck 'em up real bad," Plumeria said.

"Shit, you're right," Ian cursed. Ian thought of the conditions of Fort Acuity. The wall's not very tall, and how secure are those tents? No way they can withstand hurricane-tier winds. "They're our allies…"

Plumeria nodded. "They've bled with us. You gotta help me convince Guzma to take 'em in Po Town for the storm."

Ian grimaced. That's a tough ask. "Not sure how well it'll go, but we can at least try, right?"

Plumeria nodded. "Yeah… Start thinking of ideas or I'll bring up marrying Irida again," Plumeria teased.

Ian scoffed. "You sure know how to motivate a guy."

The squad of six strolled into Po Town's front gate moments later and put their bikes on the side, with Mina coming down the stairs with a big smile on her face.

Plumeria cleared her throat, her gaze fixated on Ian. "No loligagging today, Ian," Plumeria warned.

Ian caught Mina as she jumped onto him, kissing him exuberantly before he withdrew his lips.
"C'mon, just a couple minutes?" He asked Plumeria.

"Nope," Plumeria croaked. "You met someone too important. C'mon."

Mina eyed Ian mysteriously and whispered. "Too important?"

Ian looked around to make sure no one was eavesdropping and leaned in. "Keahi."

"Really? How-"

Ian shooshed her and gave her a playful peck on the cheek. "Gotta be quiet about it," he whispered.

"Okay…" Mina said.

"Tell you about it soon though, promise!" Ian said with a smile.

A few minutes later, Plumeria led Ian into Guzma's throne room, where he laid on the arms of the throne, tickling his Larvesta. "Ah great. Fun's over Larvesta." Larvesta collapsed onto Guzma's torso and Guzma turned his attention to Plumeria and Ian. "Got our envoy back from Sinclair, they still want to keep this stupid fucking war going after a ceasefire for some stupid storm that's supposedly heading this way…"

Plumeria cleared her throat. "There is one, a bunch of radio transmissions from Malie City are saying it. Category one hurricane by the looks of it, two days out."

Guzma grunted with frustration. "Well, looks like we gotta send our guy back to them. Aside from that, how was Outrigger?"

"Interesting," Plumeria said. "We got more than enough bikes for the Pearl Clan, and Rapp says she was able to sweet talk a boat mechanic. Assuming we come out of the storm okay, he'll come by afterwards-"

"Only two days to prep for this fucking storm?" Guzma barked harshly.

"I don't fucking control storms, boss," Plumeria clarified.

Ian cleared his throat, eyeing Plumeria, wordlessly asking permission to speak, which Plumeria granted. "Boss, there's a good side and bad side to this storm."

"Good? What's good?" Guzma demanded.

"Sinclair's boats are gonna get fucked up," Ian explained. "Gonna be no mercy from the waves."

"Heh, I'll take that, Coogz," Guzma said. "What's the bad news?"

Ian grimaced. "The Pearl Clan."

"Why? They'll just hang out in their tents," Guzma dismissed.

Plumeria shook her head. "I've been to Fort Acuity, those stakes won't stand a chance against these winds heading our way."

Guzma grimaced. "So what do you want us to do with them?"

Plumeria took a deep breath. "I'm only saying this because they've bled with us, they're making three hour trips to harvest food for us-"

"They were on the brink of starvation too, okay?" Guzma fired back.

"Yeah, but it would be a disaster for them now. We need to take them in. Not doing so could be a major setback in relations," Plumeria warned.

"We're in the middle of a war and you want to put a faction of questionable loyalty inside our walls? Are you two fucking with me?" Guzma demanded.

"They've bled with us Guzma," Plumeria answered stubbornly. "They're not gonna jump on Sinclair's side once behind our walls."

"There's no way to guarantee it," Guzma said.

"Actually there is," Ian suggested, expecting to get shouted down, instead being met with intrigued glances from Plumeria and Guzma. "They hand over their Pokemon and weapons to us for the duration of the storm. It's not a big deal if there are no hostile intentions."

"Not a terrible idea, but I'm a bit skeptical…" Guzma said, his mind still toying with the thought.

"Sounding more paranoid than Rook at the strategy meeting," Ian teased.

Guzma smiled with amusement. "You're even more convincing than Plumeria is, Coogz."

Ian smiled as another idea hit him. "And boss, when they see how dangerous the storm actually is, they'll be grateful that we were proactive," Ian paused. "Especially if we say the idea came exclusively from you."

Guzma snickered wickedly. "I'm really gonna have to watch out for you, Coogz. You're too sweet of a talker for your own good."

"So?" Plumeria asked.

Guzma grunted. "It sounds like a good idea if they consent, but you two will have to negotiate it. They're cool you guys though, right?"

"I'd say so," Plumeria said. "And now that Gaeric and Irida aren't trying to get in our respective pants, we're cooler with them."

"Gaeric? That buff guy? He was trying to fuck you?" Guzma asked in amusement.

Plumeria's expression soured. "For a bit. Lex got to him at the celebration of Atman's Point, so I'm in the clear."

"Oh yeah, forgot about that," Guzma said, turning his attention to Ian. "You should've heard the way Irida was talking about raising her future children with you Ian. It even started making me blush."

Ian laughed nervously. "I'm spoken for, boss."

"If they agree to shelter here during the storm, we'll have to keep her separate from you just in case, the way she was talking," Guzma said with a chuckle before pointing at Ian. "I see you got a Z-Ring all of the sudden, Coogz. Where'd that come from?"

Plumeria turned to Ian nervously before redirecting her attention to Guzma. "We saw Keahi."

"What!?" Guzma demanded, shifting his entire body forward causing Larvesta to launch a couple feet into the air, scrambling frantically as it flew in the air. Ian dove forward with his arms stretched forward, hitting the floor hard as Larvesta landed on his hands, the brunt of the impact having lessened. Larvesta chirped in shock as its eye focused on Ian for a moment.

"Hey there…" Ian said with a smile as he felt fresh bruises on his elbows beginning to form.

"Larvesta, I didn't know you could fly," Guzma teased. "Get back over here."

Larvesta whined a little before it got on its own legs and turned, trudging back to Guzma slowly.

"C'mon Larvesta, you know I didn't mean it," Guzma said, stretching his arm down and lifting Larvesta back onto his lap. Guzma turned his attention back to Ian, but Ian noticed a puff of smoke come up from the fiery Bug Type and Guzma winced. "Larvesta, calm down."

Larvesta plopped its body onto Guzma's lap rather unhappily but stirred no more. "So… Keahi…" Guzma began. "The hell's she been all this time?"

"Breakwater Isle," Plumeria said.

"The fuck's that?" Guzma demanded.

Ian could feel Plumeria's eyeroll and she pointed to the map mural Mina had painted. "It's that little landmass off the coast of Outrigger. Technically not on Ula'Ula, but not far away either."

"So she's just been hanging out there after causing all this nonsense?" Guzma asked.

"Apparently," Plumeria said. "She greeted us, then asked everyone but Ian to leave."

"Really now?" Guzma asked, almost sounding impressed.

Ian shrugged nervously. "Yeah…"

"What'd she want to talk to you about?" Guzma asked.

"I think she just wanted to get to know me…" Ian began. "She was kinda hostile at first cuz of the Unovan accent, but I told her the story of how Tapu Bulu blessed Deerling, talked a bit about why I'm still here in Po Town… I guess she liked what I had to say. She gave me this after all." Ian raised his right hand, indicating the Z-Ring.

"She give you one of her Z-Crystals too?" Guzma asked.

Ian shook his head. "No, but I have an Ice Type one. Icium-Z I think?"

"She teach you how to use that thing?" Guzma asked.

Ian shook his head. "No."

"I can teach him, boss," Plumeria chimed in.

Guzma shook his head. "Maybe after this damn storm blows over," Guzma sighed with frustration. "Get Rook, Tom and Grillz over here. I wanna tell 'em what's coming. I suggest you dip and go down to the Pearl Clan before Rook hears of this plan of yours, he ain't gonna like it."

"Got it," Plumeria said, eyeing Ian. Oh yeah, no Mina time. Lame.

***

The Pearl Clan leadership's first reaction to the offer from Guzma was rather cold, but after
Lil' Dizz crashed the meeting and mentioned a ceasefire had been agreed to between Sinclair and Guzma, along with a major description of what the oncoming storm would do, the clan begrudgingly agreed. Ian was thankful he really only had to deal with a few glances from Irida during the talks.

Afterwards in Po Town, Tom's stewards went into overdrive boarding up every window and doing last minute fixes on the most crucial rooftops they possibly could, as well as getting makeshift sandbags going in the most populated places. Teams of trainers went out to get more wood to continue the effort even as the winds picked up massively and the sky darkened overhead. Plumeria's squad had finished up their last run of gathering lumber and dropping it at Tom's Warehouse when Ian heard an abnormal horn call from beyond Po Town's walls.

"The fuck's that?" Tupp demanded.

"It's a Pearl Clan horn," Plumeria answered quickly. "About time they got here. Just a couple hours away from it getting real nasty."

"It's already nasty!" Selene called out, holding onto her hat as a gust blew Ian's hat into the warehouse wall.

"Just put the fucking hats away and follow me!" Plumeria barked as she turned to the front gate.

"What's going on, Big Sis?" Hyde asked, a hint of fear in his voice.

"I don't trust Rook to deal with the Pearl Clan surrendering their Pokemon and weapons very well," Plumeria said.

Ian stuffed his hat into one of his pockets and followed Plumeria up The Spine as rain began to fall. He didn't care about his messy brown hair as it soon got damp enough, and everyone else's hair began looking matchingly ridiculous when combined with wind before they arrived at the front gate.

Ian sighed as he beheld the dozens of people that made up the Pearl Clan. He noticed they'd all bundled up in the sweaters they'd used while in Makamae Town, and the front row was the leadership group of the clan, all holding their Poke Ball Belts.

"Can't believe we're doing this," Rook croaked lowly.

"Some people actually care about saving lives, especially those of our allies," Plumeria spat back.

Rook scoffed. "Always being so fucking dramatic. You know what I meant," Rook said.

Ian could see the frustration in Plumeria's eyes, but she dropped the issue as Irida and the Pearl Clan wardens made their way to the front gate.

"Apologies for the delay, these conditions have been rather severe," Irida called out as she approached.

"That's why we're fucking taking you in," Rook sneered.

Plumeria glared daggers at her fellow Bone. "Apologies Irida, this one didn't think Guzma consulted him enough on this move."

Rook returned a sour scowl at Plumeria for a moment before relenting. "It's whatever. You guys have bled with us, it's the least we could do."

Irida gave him an overly sweet smile. "Considering this storm is only to worsen, the Pearl Clan and myself give our most tremendous thanks," Irida said, turning back to Plumeria. "Where shall we be housed?"

Plumeria pointed up The Spine to the two-story building with the red roof. "The Pokemon Center. It's spacious enough and is one of the high points in town, meaning it's less likely to flood. It's our hospital for Pokemon and trainers alike, so it's well protected."

Irida bowed her head as a gust of wind sent raindrops sideways into her face. "Again, we thank you."

"I'll take your Poke Ball Belt, Irida," Rook said bluntly.

Irida shook her with a sweet smile and fixated her gaze upon Ian. "I would prefer Ian to hold my Pokemon for the duration of our stay. I trust no one more."

Ian suppressed a frustrated sigh, but Irida already held her belt of six apricorn Poke Balls out, and he knew it would be bad diplomatic form to reject it. Ian took it begrudgingly. The rest of Plumeria's squad handled the Pearl Clan wardens' Poke Ball Belts and led them up The Spine to the Pokemon Center, where Ian noticed dozens of what looked to be plastic bags full of sand tied up at the ends near the entrance.

"For when we fully lock down," Plumeria noted.

"We'll be in Shady House though, right?" Ian asked.

Plumeria nodded. "Yeah."

Thank goodness.

After a quick welcoming from Doc and subsequent handshake from Irida, the Pearl Clan hastily moved into the Pokemon Center lobby, water dripping from their clothes as they breathed sighs of relief.

Palina made her way to Ian with a smirk on her face. "So you're telling me this storm will get even worse?"

Ian nodded. "Supposedly."

"Hmm…" Palina hummed as she pondered. "Our dwellings in Fort Acuity would barely be holding together right now, I shutter to think about how a more severe storm would have done to our camp. I will not lie, it was a surprise to us all when Guzma was the one to offer us Po Town's hospitality. Almost too surprising."

Damn Palina and her ability to read into things. Ian shrugged and gave the perceptive woman a big smile. "Even our boss has a soft side sometimes."

Palina tittered dismissively, but did not pursue her idea any further much to Ian's relief. Ian heard a deep male voice bellow inside the quickly filling up Pokemon Center.

"Who wishes to brave this challenging storm with me outdoors?" Gaeric asked aloud, flexing his muscles as water dripped from his person.

Ian cautiously made his way over to the rest of Plumeria's squad, where Gaeric had begun speaking to the squad leader in earnest. "... what of the lady Lex?" Ian heard Gaeric ask.

"I think she's out leading a foraging party," Plumeria explained. "Should be back any moment though."

"With conditions as they are, she may be in need of rescuing," Gaeric proposed.

Plumeria smirked. "Doubt that, but I guess we should go check with Rook-"

The Pokemon Center doors opened suddenly, with a half-dozen Team Skull members surging through hastily. "Where's Doc at?" Lex demanded angrily before pausing as she processed the dozens of Pearl Clan members inside the Pokemon Center. Gaeric gasped as he spotted the woman he'd spent a crazy night with and he charged toward her.

"What may I do for you, my lady?" Gaeric asked, bowing his head respectfully.

"Get my Pokemon a fucking doctor," Lex fired back.

"Why so mad?" Doc's accented Galarian called back from across the lobby.

"I need my Pokemon healed up, stat!" Lex barked. "Disnethorpe's squad ain't back yet and we got hit by this crazy horde of Trevenant. The other squad was in the same forest we were."

"Lex," one of her male squad members said meekly. "Are we really going back out there?"

Lex shook her head. "I won't force anyone. It's a miracle we're back in one piece."

"Yes, someone to join me in the storm!" Gaeric bellowed as he approached Lex. "I volunteer for this operation!"

Lex handed her Poke Ball belt to Doc and turned back around to Gaeric. "Long time no see, muscle muffin," she teased. "But if you're truly dumb enough to go back out there with me, I'll give you a treat when we're back."

"A treat?" Gaeric asked with a lascivious smile.

"Even more fun than last time," Lex said coyly.

Gaeric tensed. "Is that… possible?"

"The trick is you gotta survive this fucking storm," Lex explained. "The forest Pokemon are all riled up."

"How far away is everything?" Plumeria asked.

"Just a little up the ridge," Lex said. "Wasn't even fifteen minutes before the rain got bad."

Plumeria grimaced, her eyes instinctively turning to Ian. Ian nodded knowing exactly what Plumeria was asking.

"You want me to go too, Big Sis?" Tupp asked.

"I won't make anyone go since it's dangerous, but if Lex has her panties in this much of a twist it's gotta be a big deal," Plumeria said. She turned to Hyde, who declined.

"You know, I really shouldn't but…" Selene began. "I'll go too."

Tupp gave Ian a look of annoyance, but Ian shrugged it off. If there's a horde of Trevenant out there, we're gonna need all of the help we can get. Ian noticed Hyde had skulked off somewhere, and Rapp had followed Doc into the back of the Pokemon Center.

After a few short minutes, Doc returned Lex's Pokemon to her, Gaeric's belt was returned to him, and the group of trainers trudged out into the storm. Since the rather short amount of time since they'd gotten out of the storm, Ian felt the wind and rain had both increased in ferocity and a pang of regret hit him. Remember, Team Skull's one and only rule… Also if Disnethorpe's out there, that means the other Backstreet Boys and the rest of his squad are out there too.

Ian was barely able to see more than a few dozen feet in front of him thanks to the rain sometimes blowing up into his eyes. Ian wished he had some sort of sweater on to shield him, but he realized it wouldn't matter. With how much rain was coming down, it would've offered little respite.

Upon reaching the gate house, Rook emerged. "The fuck you guys going?"

"Lil' Dizz's squad isn't back yet, are they?" Plumeria asked.

"No," Rook responded. "You guys are gonna go look for 'em?"

"We gotta try at least," Plumeria said.

"We can't lose two squad leaders to this idiocy!" Rook barked back. "I was just about to shut the gate and go back to Shady House."

"First rule of Team Skull!" Ian shouted out as a gust of wind blasted their ears.

"You don't understand the first part about it!" Rook roared. "You die and Sawsbuck goes missing, we all starve. Don't you fucking get that?"

Ian tensed, unable to think of a proper response.

"There's a horde of Trevenant out there, and Lil'Dizz isn't the trainer I am!" Lex yelled. "They shouldn't be very far anyways!"

Rook shook his head. "I gotta close this fucking gate ASAP!"

"Give us an hour!" Plumeria said. "Shouldn't take us that long, and the worst of it won't be here yet."

Rook grimaced as he checked his watch. "Fine, you have an hour tops, okay? Then you're shit out of luck."

Plumeria motioned for the crew to move on through the gate, while Ian noticed Lex turn as she passed, flipping off Rook. "Pussy!"

Rook returned the bird himself and made his way back to the gatehouse.

***

Ian didn't appreciate how much the structures of Po Town helped disrupt the wind until they'd passed Elk Grove and bore the full brunt of mother nature's fury. Trees billowed to one side, and Ian would occasionally get knocked in the head by flying fruit from Elk Grove that the wind had finally managed to separate from the berry trees' branches.

Behind him, Selene shivered frantically as Lex led the group, making their way forward and up the ridge outside of town. It was a well worn hiking trail, but the mud slowed their progress and the wind and rain constantly swept over them in domineering fashion, making the group hunch their heads and cover their eyes during the particularly fierce gusts. And this isn't even the worst of it? Fuck, we better get back soon.

"How much further up?" Plumeria asked.

"Just over this bit-" Lex's voice disappeared as an overpowering gust swept over them, causing Ian to need to steady himself. Selene fell to the side with a yelp, with Tupp and Plumeria turning to help her back up, although the left side of her body was now covered in mud. They finally got to the ridge they'd been hiking up to and Ian heaved a sigh of relief, only to remember what horde of Pokemon Lex's squad had encountered.

They quickly made their way to the trees, and every gust of wind made the branches groan and crack as they were pushed to their very limits. The trees seemed to decrease the ferocity of the rain slightly, which Ian was thankful for even if the wind kept a steady stream of water in the air.

"Lex? Big Sis?" A desperate male voice called out. "Over here!"

The squad turned their attention to the source of the voice, and when Ian focused on the source, remembered as one of the members of the Backstreet Boyz. He was the clumsy one who fell off the awning. Tupp and I fought Flexx and Lil' Dizz, I think his name was Verse? The young man scowled in pain and held his foot out from the trunk of the tree he'd posted up on. Ian followed the rest of the group as they made their way over to him.

"Verse, what happened?" Plumeria demanded.

"There's a bunch of Trevenant around here and they're all pissed off!" Verse said pleadingly. "We got cornered by the Alpha and Lil' Dizz had me go for help but I fucked my foot up. They're somewhere up the hill away from the trees!"

Plumeria eyed Lex. "Any reason you didn't alert them?"

"We didn't know until after we saw them, and it's a miracle we got out unharmed," Lex explained.

Plumeria grimaced, clearly disapproving of the squad leader but she shook her head. "No reason to focus on it now, we need to get them to shelter now." Plumeria turned to the rest of the party sternly. "I'm thinking we get a few trainers to distract 'em, rest of the crew tracks down the stranded group. Any ideas?"

"I volunteer!" Gaeric shouted proudly, raising his hand. "Who is with me?"

"Gaeric, you have an Avalugg right?" Ian asked.

Gaeric smiled proudly as he reached for black ball from his Poke Ball Belt. "I have Lord Avalugg's strongest son as one of my partners."

Ian turned to Plumeria with a smile. "I'll have Sandslash use Snowscape which'll buff our Ice Types' defense. We'll be able to withstand 'em for a while."

"Only two?" Plumeria asked skeptically.

"Two is all we shall need to vanquish these vermin!" Gaeric bellowed before a gust of wind blasted the party.

The concerned look in Plumeria's eyes seemed to be asking him if he had enough, but Ian smiled in the downpour, mouthing "be quick." Plumeria nodded, motioning them to go deeper into the bank of trees.

Gaeric held his black ball at the ready, with Ian holding his Premier Battle in his hand as they trudged deeper. "Okay Gaeric, when we see the Trevenant, release Avalugg."

"Of course. And may I ask what our enemies will look like?" Gaeric asked.

"Ghost Pokemon that are possessing small trees," Ian said. Except for the Alpha that's supposedly around.

"And Ian," Gaeric began lowly. "Lord Avalugg's progeny is not a fast mover, but he hits rather hard with his wide ranging attacks. Make sure your Pokemon steers clear," Gaeric said over the howling winds of the storm.

"Got it!"

The two trudged deeper, and not even half a minute later he noticed a tree move against the wind. " They're here. "Get ready," Ian said, trying to not be too loud.

"What!?" Gaeric bellowed loudly.

Ian put his index finger over his mouth and then pointed down. Gaeric nodded and placed his black Poke Ball in a shot-put position. Oh yeah, those things are literally called "Heavy Balls." Ian tossed his Premier Ball forward, catching a gust of wind which sent it even further forward before releasing.

Sandslash manifested, showcasing its claws for a moment before quickly covering its head from the fierce weather. Sandslash turned back to Ian, clearly irritated as Ian caught its Premier Ball. "I'm out here too girl, okay?" Ian said. He doubted she heard it, but the sentiment appeared to get through.

Ian turned to Gaeric who was on his knees, holding the Heavy Ball in his hand before he roared a battle cry and shot-put the ball into the air. The ball went halfway that Ian's lightweight Premier had gone before bursting open with a low boom, and the largest outline of a Pokemon Ian had seen in Alola manifested. The shock wave sent the rain fleeing in every direction from the beast. Brown, earthy legs and a shell melded with stone and ice stood in front of Ian. Its shell rose above Ian's head, and an ear-splitting screech of a roar hit Ian's ears. Ian suddenly felt no rain hitting his person, if only for a moment before a torrent of water fell onto him. "Incredible," Ian said aloud.

Gaeric grinned with pride as he caught the Heavy Ball like a weighted medicine ball. "Indeed."

Ian returned his focus to the task, and noticed the trees themselves seemed to be shuffling and approaching. Here we go. "Sandslash, Snowscape!" With that, his Alolan Sandslash spread her arms and a mixture of ice, snow, and slush covered a vast radius around the two Ice Types. Ian noticed both the Alpha Hisuian Avalugg and Alolan Sandslash glowing slightly, and he nodded proudly seeing Snowscape's defensive buff for Ice Types taking effect. Suddenly a few bubbles of Ice Type Energy floated from the ground into Hisuian Avalugg's shell. Healing from Snowscape too? Must be Ice Body.

The woodland itself seemed to be approaching now, as seven Trevenant all of varying sizes ranging from just under Ian's height to likely a foot or more. Four legs sprouted from the bottom of their wooden bodies, and they were coated in numerous sections of green plant life. Ian noticed one eye with a slight glow at the top of their trunk-torsos, and Ian allowed a small sigh of relief. No Alpha. "Now Swords Dance!" Ian called out.

"Avalugg, show them a proper greeting. Mountain Gale!" Gaeric roared. The great beast raised its head, and Ian finally caught a sight of the tusk-like ice wedges on its front as it channeled more light blue energy. Once a massive sphere had been channeled, Hisuian Avalugg gave a roar and launched a massive chunk of ice at the oncoming elder tree Pokemon. They were too bunched together to maneuver, and the speed of the projectile made dodging futile anyways as it crashed into two Trevenants, blasting them dozens of feet backwards in a haze of splinters and ice crystals. I suppose the ice missiles from the Avalugg battle in Legends Arceus weren't exaggerated.

"Now it's your turn while Avalugg recharges," Gaeric said bluntly.

The five Trevenant that hadn't been blasted away looked at each other in disbelief of what had just occurred, and four suddenly disappeared in a haze of purple energy. It's that disappearing move, Phantom Force. The one left behind began glowing with purple Ghost Type Energy and Ian squinted, noticing most of the glow was around its eye and what was likely its mouth. Confuse Ray! "Sandslash, Ice Shard!" Sandslash threw an icy projectile which careened over to the Trevenant, and right as an unholy sound hit Ian's ears, Ice Shard smacked into the Trevenant's head. "Now let's skate!" Ian ordered, anticipating the Trevenant re-emerging to attack the duo.

"Brace yourself!" Gaeric ordered his Hisuian Avalugg.

Sandslash took off, and right on cue a Trevenant appeared from the shadows, smashing into the ground just behind the speeding Alolan Sandslash. Sandslash veered right just as another Trevenant sprang from shadows in its path. Sandslash leapt, somersaulting and firing Icicle Spears from its back. Four icy daggers embedded themselves within the Trevenant closer to the trainers, causing the Grass-Ghost Type to yelp like scraping wood. Two shadows appeared next to Hisuian Avalugg, and both Trevenant slammed into the great beast, only for the two attacking Pokemon to have their wooden bodies crack, while Avalugg seemed unphased.

"Crunch!" Gaeric called it, a hint of sadistic glee in his voice. Avalugg's front tusk-like protrusions glowed with dark energy and Avalugg shifted backwards for a moment before positioning its wedges around the Trevenant on the right. The wedges suddenly snapped together and the victim Trevenant's torso snapped, its lower body falling limply to the wet, icy ground. The other Trevenant's right arm glowed green, and it slammed its arm into Avalugg's tusk-like protrusions. Avalugg seemed unaffected by this, and swung its tusks around, still holding the disembodied Trevenant in its maw as it smacked the Trevenant that had used Wood Hammer away a dozen feet, with the top half of Avalugg's victim Trevenant careening close behind.

Ian picked up his jaw from the sheer force of the mighty Alpha Hisuian-Avalugg, and he remembered there was a battle going on. Sandslash had already dished out a number of Icicle Spears, causing the last Trevenant that had rushed them to fall back and join the other one which had recovered from the Ice Shard to the face.

"Look, there are more approaching!" Gaeric called out.

Sure enough, another wave of Trevenant hurried over as quickly as their little root-legs could carry them, their bodies creaking eerily with every movement. The harsh wind only made them look even more foreboding. "Swords Dance again!" Ian called out to Sandslash. No wonder Lex didn't want to tangle with this horde.

"Get them to disappear, Ian. Avalugg will crush them once more," Gaeric said bluntly.

"Gotcha," Ian said in agreement. As Sandslash finished up her Swords Dance, she took off like a speed skater, charging the Trevenant as they creeped forward. Now numbering nine, five of the approaching disappeared into dark purple shadows, leaving three enemies side by side and another which hung back. Sandslash suddenly slowed, and Ian realized he needed to re-up Snowscape.

"Mountain Gale!" Gaeric called out.

"Snowscape!" Ian followed. The radius around Sandslash turned to ice, snow, and slush once more, distracting the approaching trio of Trevenant, just long enough for another ice missile to launch at the set, blasting through them like a bowling ball crashing into a set of pins.

"Protect!" Ian called out. Sandslash suddenly curled up into the closest it could do to a ball as two Trevenant leapt out of spontaneously appearing shadows, smashing into the glowing, impervious Sandslash. The other trio appeared around Avalugg, smacking into the incredibly sturdy Ice-Rock behemoth.

"Crunch once more!" Gaeric ordered confidently. Avalugg managed to snag one elder tree Pokemon between its tusks and dismember it from its lower body like before. Avalugg began to turn to swing its victim asunder when a purple shadow, twice the size of the other Trevenants' shadows appeared, and a towering Trevenant with a bright red eye appeared, smashing into Avalugg, causing the behemoth to buckle from the tremendous force. Before Ian could curse aloud, a roar of cracking wood hit his ears and Ian found himself on the ground, his head and back aching. He realized the wind and rain had stopped for a moment before another torrent of water hit him.

The Alpha Trevenant readied another attack, its hand turning dark green as it unleashed a powerful Wood Hammer on Alpha Avalugg. Avalugg gave a low, bellowing cry of pain.

"Icicle Spear!" Ian called out, finally regaining initiative. Sandslash fired off a series of icy daggers, with only two hitting home, not even eliciting a response from the Alpha Trevenant.

"Do you not have something that hits harder?" Gaeric asked frantically.

Ian grimaced, looking down at his Z-Ring with Icium-Z locked in. Fucking hurricane prep. I never got time for Plumeria to teach me on how to actually use this thing. Sandslash only has Ice Shard and Icicle Spear though, they wouldn't be strong Z-moves. "Not really…" Ian said woefully.

Sandslash skated her way back to Ian and Gaeric, getting between them and the regrouped lesser Trevenants creeping towards them. Avalugg gave a loud cry as it roused itself, its tusks glowing with Dark TE once more. It lunged forward, digging its tusk-like wedges into Trevenant before squeezing, causing the Alpha Trevenant to roar in agony.

The horde of Trevenant closed in on Sandslash, with half of them disappearing again. "Icicle Spear!" Ian called out desperately. Sandslash launched three icy daggers at the first Trevenant, landing direct hits and knocking it back, with three more elder tree Pokemon closing in.

One shadow manifested behind Sandslash, crashing into his icy rodent, which tanked the hit well. Ian began to wonder where the other three were going and when it hit him, he dove out of the way into the mud and slush. Three Trevenant leapt out of shadows that appeared right where he had been, and he felt his heart drumming frantically in his chest as he got back up. Way too close a call!

Suddenly a flash of Ice TE came from Ian's peripheral vision and four massive icicles crashed into the Trevenant trio, knocking them out of his field of vision. Sandslash raised her claws triumphantly and Ian heaved a sigh of relief. That must've been Icicle Crash. "Hell yeah!" Ian called out, pumping his fist to his savior who quickly skated away from two attacking Trevenant.

A mighty roar from Avalugg brought Ian's attention to the struggle between Alphas, and Ian's jaw dropped as he saw numerous cracks in Avalugg's rock-ice shell, as well as vines he recognized from Leech Seed covering it. Alpha Trevenant had seemingly sections of its wooden body, and the two were locked in heavy struggle. One of Alpha Trevenant's arms dislodged itself from a puncture in Avalugg's shell, and numerous bubbles of green energy followed the path of Trevenant's arm, regenerating part of the assailant's wooden body. Looks like Horn Leech…

"Icicle Crash! Get that Alpha off Avalugg!" Ian roared. Sandslash zig-zagged through the trees and leapt into the air, firing off another barrage of large icicles. The four massive, pointed projectiles crashed into Trevenant, knocking the Alpha off its legs and onto its side.

"Finish it, Mountain Gale!" Gaeric bellowed. Avalugg channeled more Ice TE, and roared as it launched the even more massive missile. The missile landed with such speed all Ian could make out from the impact was a cloud of mud and rain.

"Fucking finally…" Ian croaked.

"Ian, Gaeric! Get outta there!" Plumeria's voice managed to reach them amidst the storm.

Ian turned to see the source, and Plumeria was about thirty feet to their lower right accompanied by numerous Team Skull grunts as they trotted away from the scene. "C'mon!" Ian called to Gaeric and Sandslash. Sandslash left the two Trevenant minions she'd been engaging and skated over to Ian casually.

"Ian, wait," Gaeric said cautiously.

"What?" Ian called back.

Suddenly a massive purple cloud of shadows appeared before him and out came Alpha Trevenant, descending upon him faster than he could dodge. Sandslash's light blue, icy form leapt in between, taking the brunt of the blow as she got smacked into the dirt harshly. "Shit!" Ian called out instinctively. Ian's ears seared with pain when he heard Trevenant's Alpha Roar at such close range, but soon the rest of his body did too as he crashed into the mud, sliding seven to eight feet from where he'd first impacted.

Everything hurts… Ian's mind was fuzzy from his head banging against the sleek terrain. Trevenant's hauntingly bright red eye closed in, its arm glowing with green energy. I might be well and truly fucked.

A booming, high pitched shriek hit his ears, a familiar one he hadn't heard in some time. Alpha Trevenant withdrew its hand, which had reverted from glowing. The wind and rain calmed significantly, making it seem almost tranquil compared to the maelstrom they'd been battling in. Ian followed his adversaries up to the treetops and gasped as a familiar black and red form hovered above. Tapu Bulu!

"Mountain G-"

"Stand down Gaeric!" Ian shouted frantically. "That's Tapu Bulu up there!"

Gaeric held his hand up to halt Avalugg, and the ceasefire seemed to take hold across the battlefield. Gaeric then knelt reverently. Tapu Bulu pointed one of its arms to Trevenant, grunting as it did, then used its other arm to point the opposite direction with a grunt like it was directing the Alpha. Trevenant suddenly de-manifested into a shadow, disappearing entirely within moments.

Tapu Bulu then pointed at Ian and Sandslash, grunting once more, then pointed in what Ian realized was the direction of Po Town. It wants both sides of this battle to take shelter. Ian scrambled to get to his knees and bowed to Tapu Bulu, wordlessly thanking the island guardian. After a few moments of reverence, Ian got up slowly, watching Tapu Bulu closely as he walked to the rest of his party. He recalled Sandslash, and Gaeric had already recalled his Alpha Hisuian-Avalugg, joining Ian through the trees. Tapu Bulu gave one last shrieking call before taking off inland. Ian noticed Alpha Trevenant's hands glowing with green energies as it picked up wounded Trevenants from the battle and Ian felt a pang of regret. Maybe there was a way we could've gotten Lil' Dizz's squad out peacefully.

Going down the slope was treacherous in the hurricane conditions, but the group made it back to Po Town, albeit drenched and muddy as all hell. One of Lil' Dizz's squad members had a broken arm, another a hurt knee, and their Pokemon were mostly spent. Rook was able to close the gate and the group made it to the Pokemon Center, with the doors getting fortified by the makeshift sandbags, meaning they'd be weathering the tempest in the Pokemon Center with the Pearl Clan.

Ian was bruised, aching, and terribly sore but he had no major injuries so he put his clothes in the facility's dryer and curled up with a blanket on a spare chair close to the lobby. The stench of too many people in a poorly ventilated space hit his nostrils, but he was too sore to care.

"Mr. Ian, Mr. Ian!" A familiar young girl's voice called out.

Ian turned to see Rylee with Plusle on her shoulder dashing to him with a big smile, and for a moment all of his aches and pains faded. Rylee jumped on him even though he was wrapped in a blanket, and he did his best to hug her. "Good to see you Rylee, Plusle."

"You went and saved all those people?" Rylee asked as Plusle jumped on Ian's shoulder and curled up.

Ian shook his head. "Not just me." One of Ian's hands made its way out from under the blanket and pointed at Gaeric, who was busy regaling his Pearl Clan comrades of the battle against the Trevenant horde. "He did more than me actually."

"Really?" Rylee asked skeptically.

"Yes really," Ian confirmed. "Is there a reason you're here at the Pokemon Center and not at Ms. Sarah's apartment?"

"There's a leak in the ceiling, and the wind was really scary. Plusle was so frightened that Ms. Sarah took us here," Rylee said.

"The wind is howling here too though," Ian said.

"Yeah, but Ms. Irida's been telling all us kids these amazing stories!" Rylee said enthusiastically. Rylee then leaned in close, whispering. "Back in the old world, I got a card with her on it in my first booster pack."

Ian smiled. "That's cool."

"And she's so pretty," Rylee said. "I wanna be just like her one day."

"She's a good person to look up to," Ian said.

"Oh is that praise I hear from Ian Cougar?" Irida's elegant voice said in a simultaneously accusing tone as she approached the chair he'd taken up in.

Ian's heart sank as he turned to face the head of the Pearl Clan. Quickly he got a bit nervous as her sapphire-blue eyes fixated on him intensely. "Just because we're having a problem doesn't mean I think you're not worth admiring."

"Thank you," Irida said as she stood in front of Ian blanketed up in his chair with Rylee on his lap.

"Ms. Irida, your stories were so good! I really liked the one about how Lord Arcanine evolved from a little Growlithe!" Rylee said excitedly.

Irida's gorgeous smile even made Ian blush. The Pearl Clan leader tittered happily. "I'm glad you liked it, young Rylee. And may I ask how you're so close to Ian?"

Rylee gasped with excitement. "When I came in the Ultra Storm, he saved me from the giant lobster!"

"Did he?" Irida's eyes drifted to him for a moment. "Isn't he so brave?" Using Rylee against me, this isn't fair.

"Yeah!" Rylee agreed, nodding frantically. "Even though I don't have a mommy and daddy in this world, Mr. Ian looks after me like a big brother I never had." Rylee gave Ian's blanketed form a big hug, practically melting his heart.

"He does, does he?" Irida said with a dazzling smile. Damn Irida being so hot.

Irida cleared her throat and knelt closer to Rylee's level. "Rylee, I am sorry but I need to speak with Ian alone for a bit. I promise I will give him right back to you when I am done though."

"Okay…" Rylee said, suddenly dejected. She gave him a goodbye hug and climbed off Ian's blanket. "And Mr. Ian, can me and Plusle play with Impidimp later? We really miss him."

Ian's heart tensed as he grimaced. "Maybe…"

Plusle jumped off Ian's shoulder and onto Rylee's and she marched off, petting her electric rodent partner all the way.

"Is she the one you rescued and were subsequently punished for?" Irida asked calmly.

"That wasn't the whole story…"

Irida shook her head disapprovingly. "She is such a pure soul in such a difficult world."

Ian nodded. "That she is…"

"I know this is not a possibility, but if in some world we were married, I would want to adopt her," Irida said.

Ian grimaced. "With how dangerous this island is, I wouldn't want her to lose another father figure if something bad happened."

Irida sighed. "There is the rub. That's rather thoughtful of you, Ian," Irida paused. "Gaeric told the story of you two and your battle against the horde of haunted trees."

"Trevenant," Ian said. "Gaeric's Avalugg did a lot of the heavy lifting."

"It was a noble cause, I deeply admire that about you Ian," Irida said. "Putting your life on the line, having one of my warden's backs to save your comrades…"

Ian realized he was tensing up quite a bit, so he exhaled deeply. "Thanks."

"I am glad you can finally relax around me," Irida said.

Ian shook his head. "Only so much."

Irida tittered. "You should have seen how tense Adaman would get once we realized we had feelings for each other…"

Ian tensed up again as he realized he hadn't told Irida about the story that Leilani's grandmother had told him about the true name of Atman's Point- Adaman's Point.

"What is it?" Irida said, reading him like a book.

Do I tell her? If it's not true, this would be horribly cruel, but maybe she should know? At the very least, if that love letter is Adaman professing his undying love for her, she might finally get off my back for good.

"I can tell something has captured your mind, Ian," Irida said.

Ian smiled nervously. "Well, I'm not sure if I should tell you…"

"Tell me what?"

Ian sighed. "It's a story I heard from an elder in Outrigger. I haven't been able to tell if it's true or not, but it's something you'd probably want to know."

"Then out with it, please," Irida said, a hint of concern in her voice.

"Okay. Now just remember, it might not be true, but there's a lot of stuff that lines up that makes me think it is," Ian explained.

Irida's eyebrows lowered as she listened to him attentively. "Fine."

Ian gulped nervously. "Where to begin… So you know of the place called 'Atman's Point,' right?" Ian asked.

Irida nodded. "Yes…"

"Apparently that's not its real name. Its original name was Adaman's Point."

Irida froze as the words hit her.

"It was named for a man from a faraway place, a man the elder described as the most handsome man the islands had ever seen, and had a distinct hair color and style-"

Irida flinched as the words hit her. "She said this to you unprompted?"

Ian nodded. "It was like a casual little story to her. Something she'd been told since she was a little girl."

Irida nodded slowly. "Continue…"

"There's an altar at the point," Ian continued. "Apparently there's a message carved into the stone in the language of the Unown."

"Oh…" Irida said meekly.

"And apparently, a woman whose name starts with an 'i' is who it's addressed to," Ian said, not wanting to overwhelm her with the specific mention of her name.

Tears began falling from Irida's eyes. "Ian, this is not some cruel joke?"

Ian shook his head. "I haven't verified it, but this is what I was told. Plus the time appears to line up."

Irida turned away from Ian as she let out a slight sob. "Since finding out that Adaman left Hisui not long after taking in our clan's young ones, I was curious about where he went. To think he came here of all places… it is unfathomable."

Ian gulped as he remembered another part that clicked into place. "The altar also faces an island in Mahiki Bay, an island called 'Momi Isle,'" Ian explained.

Irida turned back to Ian and sniffled, tears running down her cheeks.

"Momi means 'pearl' in Alolan," Ian said carefully.

Irida sobbed once more, putting her head in her hands. "It must be…"

"I promise I'm just telling you what I've heard, I'm sorry about anything-"

"Do not apologize," Irida said, her head still in her hands. "Just do two favors for me."

"What?" Ian asked.

"Do not speak of this to anyone, and when this storm is over, take me to this altar," Irida said coldly.

"I can do that…" Ian said nervously.
