Chapter 34: As the Silver Wind Blows

Thank you everyone for your patience, I am back with another chapter! I've also changed the summary for the fic slightly to hopefully better reflect the vibe!

The Silver Wind festival that Koa promised to take Hazard to is in full swing. Some surprises await them, as well as some old familiar faces...

Echo (Male Crobat) {Ability: Inner Focus}

Hazard (Male Joltik) {Ability: Compound Eyes}

Rascal (Female Tyrantrum) {Ability: Strong Jaw}

Anubis (Male Houndoom) {Ability: Flash Fire}

Scrapper (Male Breloom) {Ability: Effect Spore}

Flurry (Female Sealeo) {Ability: Thick Fat}

Soon enough, their group crested the final hill. All of Floaroma lay spread before them.

For a town already blossoming with color, the Silver Wind Festival had transformed into a veritable rainbow. A colorful tapestry of tents wove through the streets below and spilled out from the town limits like an overstuffed bouquet. Tantalizing scents of sweets melded with the scent of flowers and honey, wafting through the air and reaching them even from this far away.

Hazard buzzed with excitement on Koa's head.

He reached up and patted the bug-type. "We're finally here, Hazard."

Around the eastern edge of the town colorful splotches peppered the grassy fields. Rachel had told him that Rangers had sectioned off a large part of the surrounding fields so trainers could camp out.

Crowds swarmed the stalls and milled around outside town like a busy Durant nest. Technically the festival wouldn't officially start until tomorrow, but clearly the vendors and attendees were getting an early start.

With halting steps, Koa started down the hill, fighting an itch at the sight of the dense crowds. Hazard's shining gaze, taking in all the sights and numerous bug-types, made it worth it.

To Koa's disappointment, there was no space left at the pokemon center or inns in town. Apparently he was supposed to have made reservations much farther in advance. Which he had not done, given his mind had been elsewhere leading up to the festival. Hazard chastised him for this (supposedly it had been on the flyer) but hindsight was 20/20.

Hazard chittered something that he imagined to be 'then get some glasses'.

Koa threatened to toss him off his shoulder.

XXX

They soon bid farewell to Rachael and Kody, who had their own lodging accommodations sorted already. He tried his best not to be envious.

In the end, they were forced to set up with the rest of the latecomer trainers in the open field. At least the weather was going to be pleasant for the duration of the festival.

Kitto scowled at the idea. Koa couldn't blame him. They'd both been looking forward to a nice soft bed... Nothing to do but make the best of the situation.

"On the way over here, I saw a vendor selling s'mores ingredients," Koa said as they wound their way between tents. He spotted a nice clear spot near the far edge of the camp area. It meant a slightly longer walk in the morning to the festival grounds but that was a small price to pay for some extra privacy.

And since they would be staying a few days, he could probably ask Flurry to help with some washing. The memory of her new form brought a smile to his face.

Kitto grunted. "I say once everyone clears out of this festival in a few days we grab a room at the pokemon center."

Koa nodded and fervently in agreement. As much as the travel showers and water-types helped when on the road, they were nothing compared to a nice proper bathroom and soft mattress. Finally, they reached the far end of the field, just next to the border of the forest, marked off by a flagged rope.

Impatience magnified the time it took to actually pitch the tent, but eventually they'd set everything up in a satisfying way. There wouldn't be any campfires, since the festival grounds had strict regulations on how many fires could be set in one area. Instead, a few larger bonfires were placed around the campgrounds for trainers to share.

Koa checked the time on his poketch. "If we hurry, maybe we can use the showers at the pokemon center," he mused.

Kitto's scowl finally vanished and they hurriedly grabbed their bags and beelined into town.

XXX

One exceptionally agonizing wait later, they were back at their campsite, having freshly showered. Dusk had fallen and the last of daylight was fading from the sky. A faint breeze cooled the pleasant air. Four bonfires were already blazing strong, positioned near each corner of the campgrounds.

Hazard, Echo and Anubis all tagged along, and Kaze had taken up a perch on Kitto's shoulder. Fortunately the fire proved not too crowded yet, with only a large handful of trainers lounging nearby or roasting food over the embers.

Mothim and Combee fluttered about. An Infernape sat cross-legged almost on top of the fire, watching a few Chimchar playing close to the flames. Various assorted bird pokemon wheeled through the sky, playing a game of tag led by a Staraptor.

Kaze gazed up at them longingly then looked back down at the flames. Kitto reached up and stroked him, and the Pidgey leaned into the touch, cooing softly.

Smiling, Koa turned back to the fire. He tossed a marshmallow high into the air for Echo, who threw himself off his perch on Koa's back to catch it midair. He laughed, and then set to roasting another marshmallow.

Just as it was beginning to brown, a flash of colored feathers above caught his attention. Was that... an Archeops?

He tensed and clenched his fists. Surely he was mistaken... Surely...

He wasn't. Far on the other side of the fire, he could just make out the familiar face of none other than Fossie. Koa scowled. What was he doing here? He'd better not be here because of a legendary. He stared for several seconds, then shook himself.

When he looked back at his marshmallow, it was more black than brown. Oh well. Smores were better crispy anyway in his opinion. Kitto was warming his near the embers, and it was taking on a perfectly golden hue. Of course his is perfect, Koa thought wryly.

Pleasant conversations and friendly jabs were traded around the fire. Echo won a race against a Fearow. Two trainers taunted each other over the merits of being type specialists vs generalists. Another group eagerly swapped tips for beating different gyms.

It was nice.

Koa got into a (mostly) amicable argument about movies with a girl who insisted that the movie version of Rainbow Rangers was better than the show. She was wrong, of course.

"- ope the Sinnoh Rangers figure out what's going on soon. I don't even feel safe traveling the routes. What if one of those horrid things shows up tomorrow at the Festival? I mean they're like, attacking those kinds of places right?"

"Uh huh. But I heard they have extra Rangers on patrol around. Did you see them when we got here?"

"You think they can actually handle an Entei?"

Koa jerked to his feet from where he'd crouched by the fire, zeroing in on the two trainers talking. "It's-"

"Muk yeah they can! My sister is a ranger and her Flygon is the best. It'll crush any of those dumb brutes."

Koa clenched his fist. "They're not-"

More voices chimed in.

"Honestly they need to round them up already-"

"-You know I heard that guy from Johto, Supine or whatever, wanted to catch one-"

"It's Eusine stupid."

"Whatever, I knew that, but I bet he's singing a different tune now."

"You think the beast things are mad about all the poaching?"

"I think it's the Coronet Curse."

"Nah thats all Galactic stuff and those dragons, what's those Johto things got to do with that? Nothing, that's what. Now if you want real story, the curse is because the league totally covered up everythin' and Galactic is still trying to catch Dialga and Palkia. They're only saying Cyrus vanished because he escaped."

Koa dropped his skewer. The flames blurred and for a moment, his heart pounded impossibly loud in his eardrums. His mouth ran too dry to formulate a reply.

"-Oh my lakes not this again. Dude c'mon." Jeers backed up her derision. The chatter continued. In the blink of a moment it seemed, the conversation pivoted again. Something about an exhibition match between Champions Calem and Iris.

Do not look for me.

He blinked, realizing he'd been staring emptily at the flames for several seconds. Kitto was giving him a peculiar look. Koa shook his head, then fished out a fresh marshmallow and a new skewer.

Not worth thinking about.

Several burnt marshmallows, burnt fingertips and sticky fingers later, Koa staggered back to camp in a sugar-induced haze. Envy for his pokemon filled him. They got to go into their cozy pokeballs and sleep off the treats, while he had to walk back to camp and get ready for bed. He was beginning to regret not stopping after the third s'more like Hazard suggested.

The Joltik in question, who was resting contentedly on Koa's shoulder, chastised him with a playful nip to his ear before hopping off and skittering toward camp.

"Shut up," he muttered.

The lantern he'd hung outside their campsite twinkled in the darkness and bathed the area in a pale blue glow.

Kitto stumbled up to his tent, muttered a sleepy goodnight to Koa and vanished into his tent. Koa mumbled goodnight and then turned toward his own tent as Hazard hopped off his shoulder.

Koa pulled off his jacket and unclipped his pokeball belt, placing it inside his tent. He knelt down and was about to unlace his boots when Hazard bumped into his ankle with his tiny body.

Blinking, Koa stared at him. His entire countenance had shifted from sleepy to blazing with excitement, eyes practically glowing in the dark.

"Hazard-"

Without a warning, he sprang away and began to skitter towards the forest's edge.

Scrambling to his feet, Koa hurried after his pokemon, baffled. Yellow light flashed ahead. He stumbled to a stop behind Hazard at the forest's edge, and his jaw dropped.

Just under the cover of the trees, fur glowing with electric energy, stood a Galvantula. Some deep seated gut instinct burned in Koa's chest as he looked at her. The soft dilation of her blue eyes, the excited quiver to her body, the patterning on her thorax. He knew this Galvantula, even though it had been months since he'd seen her.

Hazard cleared the few yards between them in one hop and nuzzled against her, sparks flickering between them. She nuzzled and patted him with her pedipalps, as if checking him over and making sure he was healthy.

Koa found himself grinning at the sight. It'd been so many months since his journey had first begun and he got the little Joltik after rescuing his mother from that poacher... And now they'd found each other again.

The two exchanged greetings and pleasantries for a couple minutes, then Hazard chittered to his mother, his expression turning fiercely determined.

The two backed away from each other a few feet. Electricity began to gather around Galvantula. With a hissing cry, she loosed a bolt at Hazard.

It struck him hard enough to send him skidding backward, but he caught himself and slid to a stop. If he'd had a more visible mouth, Koa swore he would have been smirking.

Eyes shining, Hazard chittered something Koa took to mean 'watch this'! And then charged his body and fired a huge bolt of lightning. Galvantula shrieked in surprise as it slammed into her, carried her off her feet and sent her careening across the forest floor and into a tree several yards away.

Koa's eyebrows raised in surprise. The power difference in these few months was huge.

Galvantula slowly got to her feet and she shook herself, gathering her wits before fixing her gaze on her son. Her many eyes all glowed with pride at the display of power.

Hazard beamed. Galvantula trotted over to him, patting him on the head, then turned and slowly made her way to Koa.

Koa knelt down. Galvantula studied him carefully, then clicked her mandibles in approval and held out one furry leg awkwardly. Koa slowly reached out and shook it.

"You're welcome," he whispered. "Thank you for trusting me back then."

Galvantula returned to her son, and he bid them a soft farewell, wanting to give them some privacy. "I'll see you in the morning, Hazard."

Hazard nodded and turned back to his mother, chittering away happily.

Koa made his way back to camp, a smile on his face. Maybe Hazard had come for this very reason. To see his parent again. A hollow ache tugged at Koa's heart. Whatever the reason, Hazard was happy and that was all that mattered.

XXX

Koa lay back down in his tent, a smile still warming his lips, and closed his eyes. The festival hadn't even begun and he was already glad he'd come. The campfire conversation seemed far off in the wake of Hazard's reunion.

The memory of the nod of approval from Hazard's mother made his heart ache with a strange joy. At least someone approved of him. The bitter thought came unbidden, and a twinge of some uncomfortable feeling twisted within him.

Abruptly he rolled over and picked up his Poryphone. He turned it on and flicked aside the notifications from Buzzybuzzfeed and various forums and brought up his messages. He'd purposely muted them, only checking periodically if Avis or Cade called.

[1 Unread Message - Blake Averon].

Dated a couple days ago. Steeling himself, Koa opened it.

Blake: Stay safe Little K. You don't need luck anymore.

His grip on his phone tightened. He started to put it down, to turn back and go back to sleep, then he stopped. Before he could overthink and change his mind, he dialed Blake's number.

The call rang for so long he started to give up hope Blake would answer, and he wasn't sure if he was relieved or disappointed. Then the line clicked and Blake's voice came through.

"...Koa? Are you alright?" There was a hesitancy to his tone, but he sounded alert too. Had he woken Blake up, or had he still been awake? Blake was usually more of a night owl than Koa.

"Yeah I'm fine," he said stiffly. The few seconds of silence that followed were unnatural and awkward. "You got my note, right?"

"Yes."

A beat. Koa couldn't tell if Blake was mad or not. Not that he should be the one mad.

Blake spoke again before Koa could think of something to say. "So you must be nearly to the festival, right?"

"Yeah I just got here and set up our campsite."

Blake snorted, then said in a playful tone, "Guess somebody forgot to reserve a room?"

"Hah hah. Hazard already gave me an earful about that." He missed joking with Blake. Their easy friendship. Blake had always been more like an older sibling than just a cousin. When had that changed?

"How's your team doing?" Blake asked.

Glad of an easy question, he said, "they're doing amazing! Flurry evolved into Sealeo yesterday! It was sick, she took down a whole Combee swarm practically by herself. And I've been working on coming up with some new combos. I've got this one idea with Rascal I'm gonna try and I have a ton of ideas for combos and some new techniques."

"That sounds like a great idea," Blake said amiably.

It was hard to read anything specific from his tone. Did Blake have anything to say to him? Should Koa bring it up first? Why should I have to make the first move? "Oh! Remember how I told you I got Hazard after helping his mother? Well we ran into her again just earlier. He's gotten so much stronger now, I think she's really happy."

"That's wonderful!" Blake said, sounding genuinely happy. "I'm sure that meant a lot to him."

Kitto's words rang in his mind. 'Someone who cares about you is a rare thing.' Maybe Blake was trying to give him space? Well maybe he needs to stop giving me space and step up. As much as a part of Koa wanted that, another part of him felt... torn. Relieved that Blake hadn't tried to pester him with messages or apologies.

Blake's voice came over the line, softer than before and more hesitant than usual. "Koa?"

Koa blinked. He'd gotten so lost in thought he'd let the silence go on too long. Great. Whatever Blake's reason was, the renewed tension between them grated on Koa's nerves. His mouth dried, trying to figure out how to breach it and what he wanted.

"...Are you alright?"

"I'm fine." The answer slipped out reflexively. He bit his lip. Tried to add some measured lightness to his tone. "I just wanted to check in, see how you're doing." At nearly midnight, Koa? Really?

The silence that greeted Koa suggested Blake didn't believe Koa's words any more than Koa himself did.

Instead of immediately answering, Blake sighed. "If you're not, it's okay."

Koa tensed a little.

"I know I... left pretty suddenly."

That's one way of putting it.

"It wasn't..."

Koa heard a long exhale on the other end of the line.

"I was... I shouldn't have... I'm sorry."

The silence hung thick. Koa stared at the floor of his tent.

"I understand if you're still mad at me. I wanted to talk to you sooner I just..." Blake trailed off. It was another few moments before he continued, sounding like he changed his mind from his original train of thought. "I am sorry for talking to you like that. Snapping at you in front of your friend. I shouldn't have spoken like that."

So you're only sorry you said it in front of Kitto? The memories of the argument, of Blake's stinging words and his own retort came back to him. "Sorry," he mumbled, guilt rising in him. "For calling you a coward."

A muffled noise came from the other end that Koa couldn't decipher, followed by a stretch of silence.

The words kept coming. "But I'm not changing my mind and I don't care if you don't agree. I never gave up on my dream of catching a legendary, and I'm not doing it now. So you can think whatever you want about me but I'm doing it anyway."

Koa finally drew a breath, clenching his trembling hand.

When Blake replied, his voice wavered with emotion. "I see."

Not 'go for it' or 'good luck' or 'I believe in you'. Someone who cares about you is a rare thing. Even if you don't agree, you don't have to be enemies. Koa swallowed an impulsive retort. Maybe he and Blake would never agree.

Maybe... maybe he didn't need Blake to. It stung, but forcing Blake to agree and being angry stung more.

"I don't want to see you hurt Koa."

Sounds like an excuse to me. "I know."

"What you're trying to do is-... a noble idea." Blake's voice grew low. "But sometimes even good things can be dangerous and have consequences."

A pit opened in Koa's chest. Was that what Blake thought of him? He opened his mouth, then closed it. "You told me before you would rather me do what's right than do nothing. Did you mean that?"

Blake snorted. "Yes. I did say that. About saving your pokemon. Not..." Once again he sighed. "Look, I know you're too stubborn to give up so just... just be sure. Be careful. Think before you leap."

Holding back a sigh, Koa said, "okay. I will." That was it then he supposed. Koa's heart still ached and his thoughts burned with unsaid words and feelings, but tiredness clouded him from forming them. "I'll uh... let you go I guess. Didn't mean to wake you."

"It's okay, you didn't," he said quietly. "...but before you go, there is something else, Koa."

The stiff, serious way he spoke made Koa uneasy. "Yeah?"

"Your friend, Kitto."

"Huh?"

Blake exhaled. "I just wanted to make sure you remember our rule."

Koa stiffened. Words that Blake had drilled into him since almost as long as he could remember. "Yeah, I remember." He rolled his eyes, repeating the words derisively. "Trust nobody, blah blah, everyone's out to get us."

"Never blindly trust, because everyone has an agenda." Blake spoke forcefully.

He dug his fingers into his sleeping bag. "Yeah. I know. I don't know what that's gotta do with Kitto."

"Nothing, probably. Seems like a good kid."

Koa wasn't sure Kitto qualified as a 'kid', but whatever. He could picture Blake probably tugging his hair like he sometimes did when he was agitated. "But I'm just saying it's always good to be careful. Be sure, Little K. We have to be." His voice was softer now, filled with that worry Koa was familiar with.

Kitto was one thing Koa was absolutely sure of. Then why are you still keeping secrets? A tiny voice asked. His throat tightened and he swallowed. "I know," Koa said coolly.

That seemed to satisfy Blake. "Good. I'm... It's good to hear from you. How's the rest of your training going? I heard you got the badge from Byron."

After that, the conversation was easier. They chatted for a few more minutes, and Blake told him about Bronzong's newest hobby of making odd metal sculptures, and about Murkrow stealing scraps from the neighbors to give to Bronzong, and about his work with Rowan.

That night he slept deeply, his dreams filled with hazy images of electric pokemon and bonfires and miniature smores sized for Joltik mouths. Sticky bogs of burnt marshmallows held him down while he tried to run after Mesprit to give it a 'smore. Then he was being chased by a giant kaiju with Rascal's head but a Tyranitar body.

XXX

The next morning, he woke to find Hazard curled up on Echo's back, who in turn was sprawled on his chest, both sleeping peacefully. A glow from the walls of his test told him the sun had risen already. Scrapper must have decided to have mercy on him for once, which Koa was grateful for after last night.

Still, he didn't want to waste any more time. With a grin, he threw Echo off his chest and sat up. "Wake up!"

Echo rolled over, then shot awake, dislodging Hazard, who blinked sleepily, then perked up.

He hopped in place and then tugged at Koa's leg.

"What?"

Hazard clicked his mandibles impatiently and scurried outside the tent. Koa followed to where Hazard stood some distance away from a large boulder.

Still dressed in his pajamas, Koa watched as Hazard tensed, focusing. Sparks flared around the Joltik's body, then arced and gathered in front of his mandibles. They swirled together, forming a large glowing sphere of electricity as big as Hazard.

In a flicker of movement, Hazard released the attack. It shot across the space and into the boulder, smashing against it and leaving a sizable scorch mark and a thin crack.

Wait, was that... "You learned Electro Ball?" Koa asked, eyes wide.

Chittering, Hazard nodded.

Koa raised an eyebrow. That was unexpected. Had his mother taught it to him? Slowly, a half grin formed at the potential. Especially on a small, fast pokemon like Hazard and combined with Hazard's skill with Electroweb. He could already see potential combos. Could he even pair that with Agility...?

"Sick!" he exclaimed. "Guess we have a new move to work into your battles."

Koa rushed through his morning routine, then shook Kitto awake, who to his surprise had also slept in. Too many smores too, he guessed. He grabbed his backpack, threw on his jacket and returned his team, save for Hazard. With one last check to make sure everything else was put away, he started for Floaroma town.

He stopped briefly to sign up for the Bug Catching contest, then hurried onward to the festival.

From the moment they stepped into the town limits, all of Koa's senses were assaulted. The buzz and flutter of hundreds of bug-types out with their trainers, undercut by a jaunty melody, met his ears. He soon identified a man playing a violin alongside two Kricketune, the notes of their song filling the festival air.

Dustox and Beautifly danced about their trainers heads, and Vespiquen staffed stalls alongside vendors selling honey and treats. He had never seen so many bug-types in one place. It was almost overwhelming.

Despite the initial apparent chaos, Koa realized the festival had a sort of loose organization tying it all together. Vendors of similar kinds were grouped together, with food tents lining the main street closer to the town entrance. Further along it split into several different avenues.

Games and contests on one street and crafts and handmade goods down another, and one with plenty of tables and benches under tents for trainers to rest, dotted with more food carts and tents.

Koa found himself standing at the fork, caught up in indecision for a good few moments. Hazard seemed both content to enjoy the ride and eager to observe everything, so in the end they picked a road leading to the food carts to get breakfast.

The first half of the morning passed by in a blur. They stuffed themselves with sausage wraps drizzled with hot honey and sipped sweet lemonade.

Kitto beelined for the games area after, and immediately got in line in front of a huge pit of sandy earth that formed a wrestling ring. Inside the ring, a Heracross pumped its claws in the air as it stood over an opponent.

A sign by the ring read "7-0". The attendant flipped the sign to show 8-0.

One hard fought and wild match later, Kitto walked away with a triumphant grin and the sign now reading "8-1". Several trainers gaped at him as he passed by. Koa smirked.

There were contests to count increasingly larger groups of Combee, Whirlipede races trainers could bet on, and even a mini-kart track for CharjaKart. Koa discovered he either had terrible luck or was bad at picking winners. Hazard seemed to have a knack for it though.

The one Koa most enjoyed was Pineco toss, which could be heard from halfway across the festival grounds. Trainers tried to toss over-eager Pineco into targets, and if they landed close enough, they would gleefully explode. Winning enough points would net trainers prizes.

Koa ended up winning enough points for a prize, though most of the rewards didn't catch his eye so he settled for a Focus Sash that he gave to Kitto. At game where contestants threw Beedrill shaped darts at targets, Kitto promptly got a high score and enough for one of the larger prizes.

He came over to where Koa was waiting with a smug grin and his hands behind his back, then proudly presented a fuzzy Shinx plush. "Revenge for the Focus Sash," he said with a smirk.

Koa took it and tucked it safely in his backpack. "All part of my master plan to manipulate you into getting me prizes," he snarked. Kitto knuckled him on the head in response and Koa playfully shoved him away.

XXX

By the time Koa had made his way through the craft section with Hazard, his wallet was hurting. He'd never seen so many handcrafted items in one place. There were kimonos of woven Caterpie silk, little leaf hats made by Leavanny (he bought a tiny one for Hazard and one for himself), and braided jewelry and elegant tapestries made from all kinds of dyed threads.

An old lady was selling an assortment of richly scented candles of Combee wax, while another vendor sold colorful dream catchers made from dyed threads from a Spinarak. Brilliantly shining art resembling stained glass made from specially treated Vivillion scales cast a kaleidoscope of colors around another stall.

From the first vendor, a gentleman with a strange spider pokemon called a Tarantoula, he bought a new cord for Hazard's Everstone. It was much stronger and more durable than his old one, which had begun to fray slightly.

Then he bought a new pair of fingerless gloves made from Wurmple silk, finding they were much more durable and comfortable than he expected. And then he'd spotted another tent selling matching scarves and full gloves woven with Volcarona hairs and bought that too, for his journey to Snowpoint, only to decide to buy a matching jacket that was a perfect scarlet color. He justified it by telling himself it was on sale as a package deal. They retained heat far better than anything else and they were on sale.

Then, halfway down the street, he found a tent with a woman and her Scyther selling wooden carvings of all kinds of pokemon, and he lingered for a long time admiring all of them. He finally settled on a carving tucked in the back depicting Giratina rising from a pool of smoke.

She seemed surprised at his choice, but he caught a nod of approval from the Scyther.

After much indecision, he picked out a humble jewelry artisan who hailed from Johto and wore a woven tunic depicting crashing waves. The stall was set towards the end of the avenue and was quiet, with only a small handful of wares. Woven bracelets, shining necklaces and decorated bangles lay on small tables. A Noctowl perched at the far back, under the shade of the tent, watching sleepily.

"Ah hello young master," the man said, looking up from where he was working on a delicate pocket watch. "Can I help you find something? Are you looking for yourself or for a friend?"

Koa brushed his fingers along the Ho-Oh feather in his pocket. "Myself," he said, glancing around the stall. Nobody else was nearby. Putting aside the last of any doubts, he withdrew it, and held it out to the man.

The man's eyes widened and he dropped the tweezers he'd been using. They clattered to the table as the man slipped off his chair and made his way closer. "My oh my..." he murmured, stepping all around to admire the feather.

Even in the muted light filtering through the tent, it held a glow of its own, casting a faint rainbow shine on the walls. The man's Noctowl opened its eyes fully, gazing upon the feather with undisguised interest.

Apparently done examining the feather, the man looked up, gazing into Koa's eyes.

Koa resisted the urge to look away, even though the attention made him uncomfortable. "I uh, wanted to get it set on a chain instead of keeping it in my pocket," he began awkwardly.

Blinking, the man seemed to snap to attention, and nodded. "Apologies young man, I was lost in my own memories. It would be an honor. And what is your name?"

"Koamaru, and this is Hazard," he said, gesturing to the Joltik on his shoulder.

The old man smiled toothily. "A pleasure, master Koamaru and Hazard. I am Jaye. I travel here every year from Johto to visit my nieces and nephews and come to the festival..." he trailed off briefly, still staring. "Forgive me, it has been so long since I have seen a true feather from Lord Ho-Oh."

"You've seen one before?" Koa asked eagerly.

Jaye nodded. "Many decades ago, when I was just a young man. I was an apprentice then, still learning my craft. I wanted to carve my own path but I was filled with doubt as well. One morning I found myself watching the sunrise with my partner when a shadow appeared in the distance. As it drew close, I thought it was a great bird, such as a Fearow, but it was soon obvious it was far more than that." He smiled, lost in his memory. "That morning, Ho-Oh soared above that hill, and I was the only one who saw it. When I finally descended, I found a single feather."

Koa's jaw dropped. "You have a feather too?" So he wasn't the only one! He'd read about it, of course, but getting to meet someone who had also seen Ho-Oh was completely different.

"That I do, though I must say, yours is a splendid specimen, and by far the largest. My own is back home in Johto."

Koa fidgeted excitedly. "What do they mean? Did you ever see Ho-Oh again? Did it say anything to you? Do you think Ho-Oh does it on purpose?"

Chuckling, Jaye rubbed his beard. "Ah, you have so many questions, just as I had at your age. I am afraid I don't have the specific answers you desire. What I do believe is that it was no accident. Though no, I never did speak with it or see it again."

Koa hung on his every word, wishing he could see the memory himself. His own memory of seeing it was crystallized in his mind permanently. The way it hung on the winds, the deep scarlet red of its feathers and the shimmering rainbow of colors trailing after it. "What does it mean then?" he murmured, half to himself and half to Jaye. Were they somehow chosen? The idea seemed silly but...

Jaye seemed to study him for a moment. "Have you considered that it does not mean anything at all, young Koamaru?"

Blinking, Koa stared back. "But you said it was no accident-"

Holding up a hand, Jaye hobbled back to his chair and settled down. "Yes, that is true and I stand by that belief. But purposeful is not the same as destiny or being chosen. It is entirely possible that Ho-Oh did what it did intentionally, but not to choose me for anything. Simply because it wanted to." Jaye gestured to the table before him, and Koa set the feather down, still considering the idea.
"A gift, to one it deemed worthy."

He'd never thought that he was a chosen one the way those books he read as a kid sometimes talked about. Yet it was hard not to wonder if there was something more to it. All the unrest with the legendary pokemon lately, was that just one great coincidence?

Jaye began to gather his tools. "Would you tell me about your encounter while I work?"

Still contemplating, Koa nodded.

As Jaye began working, Koa sat on a stool and recounted his meeting with Ho-Oh. It was odd and pleasant to be talking to someone else about legendary pokemon, someone who didn't seem to hold a shred of doubt or ill will towards them. Then again, Jaye was from Johto. Of all the regions, they revered their legends most differently.

Like Sinnoh used to.

Of course, he supposed not everyone hated them per se, they just no longer looked up to them the same way, much less believed people should interact with them. He remembered back when the path to Mt Coronet and the peak had first been closed. There'd been some protests, but it soon died down the more incidents happened in other regions and the full light of Galactic's atrocities came forth.

After Koa told his story, he sat in silence for a time. The deft movements of Jaye's weathered hands as he wove strands of silver and gold together was hypnotic.

"If you don't mind..." Koa began carefully. "Have you heard about what's been happening around Sinnoh lately?"

"Bad thing, that is," Jaye muttered, his countenance darkening. "Dark times."

Koa stared at the feather, shining faintly. "Do you think those attacks are real then?"

Jaye stopped working to look up at him, eyes glimmering with curiosity. "Real? Is there reason to believe that is not so? Legendaries are capricious, and humanity was not always kind to those three."

Unease ate at Koa. "But they are protectors. A-and I saw two Entei at the park. Amity."

"Oh?" Jaye said. "That is interesting. But that does not exclude the possibility that legendaries may have their own reasons for such actions."

Biting back an instinctive retort, Koa considered the old gentleman's words. Was he right? Legendaries did have their own reasons, he believed. And they didn't always do what humans would want. But was that what was happening now?

Koa shook his head in agreement. "I just don't think they'd destroy things for no reason."

"Perhaps. Or perhaps there is more yet we do not understand." Jaye continued. "We may not know the legends' reasons for their actions, but I still hold faith that they care for pokemon and people alike. After all humanity has done, they may seek to remind us of their power. Their actions can be of good intent, even if we do not like it. After all, their natures are not always what humans might want."

Cold chills crawled down Koa's spine at those words. Jaye didn't seem jaded or spiteful like others he'd met. Was he right then? Were the legends of Johto making some kind of point? But then how to explain the seeming second ones, unless... unless his belief about there only being one was wrong and Callahan was right.

"I admit however, they do sound like odd incidents indeed. Knowing that you saw two Entei certainly changes things. Were I younger I might seek out answers, but I am afraid those days are long past," he said wistfully.

"Do you believe the rumors? A-about there being many beasts?"

Jaye snorted. "Bah. Now that is nonsense. Lord Ho-Oh only deigned to resurrect three pokemon the night the tower burned. There could no more be several of them than there could be two Ho-Oh or two Lugia."

Just as Jaye was finishing, the buzz of the PA system filled the air.

"Calling all participants to the west field for the Bug Catching Contest! Once again, please report to the tent at the west field for the Bug Catching Contest."

Jaye smiled and gently handed over the finished chain with the feather now dangling from it securely attached. "Better hurry, young master Koamaru. Good luck on your journey."

Smiling, Koa took it and fixed it around his neck. It hung perfectly just below his collarbone, with enough length to tuck into his shirt. A warmth spread from his chest all over his body. "Thanks," he murmured, gazing down.

At a first glance the chain appeared simple but looking closer Koa could see he'd used an intricate mix of gold and silver links with delicate filigree laid within each link.

With a final farewell, he left the tent. Knowing that someone else had once met Ho-Oh, and that they still admired the legendaries, heartened him.

He had to practically sprint back to his tent to drop off his goodies he'd bought and make it back to the tent at the far side of town.

Koa arrived slightly breathless at a large yellow and black striped tent that had been set up at the town's west end, at the edge of a huge field dotted with brush and trees and flowering bushes. A fairly large group of trainers was already gathered under the tent, oo-ing and ahh-ing at something.

Working his way around the crowd, he managed to get a glimpse of the source of the spectacle.

Sitting on a raised dais was an Anorith. The only bug-type fossil, and exceptionally rare, bordering on impossible to find as a fossil, particularly in Sinnoh. Mostly only found in sea caves around Hoenn.

"Sick," he murmured. Its pale and dark carapace gleamed as if it had been freshly buffed, and it looked large for its species, with sharp, powerful pincers. A vision of an Armaldo on his team began to form. Scrapper and Armaldo sparring, Rascal having another fossil on the team and Hazard having a bug-type friend.

One certainly wouldn't be a bad addition...

Scanning the crowd, he caught a glimpse of olive-green hair. Fossie. Of course he was here. Fossie didn't seem to notice him. Just as well, he was in no mood to run into the stuck up fossil trainer.

A pair of familiar siblings caught his eye much closer and he waved before wriggling through the crowd next to them. "Hey Rachel, Kody. How are you guys doing?" After how the Combee hive had seemed to affect them, he hadn't expected to see them participating in the contest.

"I'm doing loads better," Kody said smugly. "I've basically gotten used to being around all these bugs. Better than her."

Rachel, who wore a slightly strained expression, rolled her eyes. "My power is stronger than yours, that's why."

Kody folded his arms. "Nuh uh-"

With an awkward chuckle, Koa moved away, leaving the two siblings bickering away. Hazard snickered from his shoulder. Everyone showed their care in different ways, he guessed.

Finally, a Ranger wearing a straw hat and an orange jacket stepped up onto a small stage beside the Anorith. A large Butterfree clung to her hat, under which sprouted a yellow ponytail. She tapped on the microphone to get everyone's attention.

"Hi everyone, welcome to the Silver Wind Festival's annual Bug Catching Contest! I hope you've all been enjoying the fares and wares." A small ripple of cheers ran through the crowd. "My name is Amarillo, and I'm helping to run the contest. I'll review the contest rules one final time before we start."

Koa listened intently as she explained. It was fairly simple, based on the classic pastime of bug-catching without pokeballs.

Using only nets and one partner pokemon, trainers had to catch as many bug-types in the marked area as possible within the time limit. The nets had tracking systems that would log the species of pokemon captured, then trainers would release them. Essentially an elaborate game of flag tag then.

"And remember," Amarillo said, "there is no battling or pokemon techniques allowed. This is about trainers and their pokemon working together, not strength. Battling will get you immediately disqualified. But you're welcome to make use of your partner's natural abilities."

She gestured to the Anorith beside her, who adopted a haughty expression. "The top four trainers with the highest scores will have a chance to battle and add this rare pokemon to their team."

Anorith beamed as ripples of admiration and excitement ran through the crowd. Silent, blazing desire burned in Fossie's gaze.

Sometime between Team Rocket's crimes using the Game Corner and the current day, 'prize' pokemon had fallen out of popularity and then risen again. Rocket had abused the practice but originally it dated back long before Rocket, back to the days of clans. Strong pokemon wanted strong wielders, and the best way to do that was a battle, with the pokemon in question often siding with the winner.

Judging by the Anorith's expression, it was looking forward to finding a new trainer. A strong one.

Koa wondered if he might be it. More than anything though, he wanted a chance to beat Fossie at something. Even if it was just catching bugs. Pettiness was a powerful motivator.

He shot Hazard a grin. "We got this, right?"

Hazard's eyes gleamed and he flared his fur, sparks dancing around his body.

XXX

"On your marks..." Amarillo's high, clear voice rang across the field, amplified by the microphone. Her Butterfree hovered above her.

Around Koa, the various trainers and their pokemon tensed, the air humming with anticipation. All the way at the end of the crowd, Koa could see Fossie and his Kabutops. His grip on the net he'd been provided tightened. Hazard dug into his shoulder.

In his pocket was a card listing the basic points and bug-species they could catch; ranging from the average Weedle and Spinarak to rare-patterned Vivillon and Wormadam. Evolved forms were worth more than their base stage counterparts. It also mentioned that there was a chance to spot 'shiny' pokemon, which would be worth extra points.

While most were trained pokemon volunteering, a few others were apparently wild, just looking to get in on the fun, and had been coached on how the game worked. Trainers were, of course, forbidden from using pokeballs on the pokemon during the contest.

"Get set..."

Was she just dragging this out for fun?

With an eager cry, Butterfree fired a burst of multicolored energy into the sky that exploded with a 'pop' and a flash.

Koa took off at a run, only for Hazard to poke him sharply in the neck. Right. Rushing was pointless. He slowed into a steady jog, deciding to watch and see where the other contestants went first.

The competition area consisted of a huge field of flowers, dotted with small copses of trees and flower bushes and a long patch of forest at the far end. Many broke off, heading straight for distant shapes of bug pokemon fluttering about, while a few started investigating the trees closer.

After a moment's consideration, Koa decided on a plan. Most trainers were opting to start close and work their way out. That wouldn't pay off long term. The real trick would be to go as far out as possible and work his way back to the start. Avoid the clusters and crowds and get to the rarer pokemon hiding at the fringes first.

He murmured his plan to Hazard, who agreed.

They snagged a few easy catches on the way: a couple Weedle, a Caterpie and a Spinarak, and a spirited Ledyba that Hazard pinned down with his natural web.

As it turned out, the woods were a good call. Bugs were hiding in the branches, tucked into hollow logs and peeking from under bushes. He managed to catch a few rare Vivillon, an Ariados and even one he later identified as a Dottler.

Then he spent almost ten minutes chasing a Lokix that kept jumping away at the very last second, which he only caught thanks to Hazard setting a web trap that it jumped right into. To his dismay, his Poketch showed his time was running short.

He headed out of the woods, snagging a few Wormadam and a Combee on the way before pushing through a dense patch of brush and back to the fields. If he was clever, he could try to find a few more out here...

More than a few times he tried to snag something like a Ledyba or Butterfree, but they proved quite good at slipping away and making themselves scarce, and Koa decided he didn't want to waste time going after pokemon worth fewer points.

Just as he finished checking a cluster of trees ringed by pale blue flower bushes, something tugged on his ankle. Hazard had snagged his leg with thread and was anxiously pulling him toward the flower bush.

Hazard tugged insistently again, even as Koa's gaze briefly shifted. Was that a Vikavolt? That was worth a good amount of points-

A sharp poke made him listen to Hazard and walk towards the bush. "What?" he mumbled distractedly.

Hazard vanished under the bush. A long, raspy cry like wind through dry leaves came from underneath. Koa knelt down. Hazard was engaged in a tug of war trying to drag a caterpillar-like pokemon out. Its body was an alternating pattern of dark blue and pale blue, with large shiny eyes almost like glasses.

It took him several seconds to remember its name. Blipbug. Galarian. "Hazard a Blipbug is barely-"

Something about the way its fine setae and membrane-like skin glinted a pale blue in the sunlight filtering through the leaves made him stop. He leaned closer. Then he scrambled for his Pokedex and scanned it.

His jaw dropped. He grabbed his net and slapped it over the Blipbug before it could try to escape. A tiny beep indicated it had been successfully registered and he grinned.

He'd just tagged a shiny pokemon. Surely that would put him near the top. "Thanks Hazard!" he said with a grin. Hazard chittered smugly. The two pokemon chattered to each other briefly before Hazard hurried back to Koa's side.

Koa grinned. He glanced at his watch. Just under ten minutes left. Maybe he really could win this.

XXX

Koa tapped his foot impatiently as they tallied up the points, Hazard jittering on his shoulder. Surely that shiny Blipbug he snagged would have netted him just enough points to win, surely. Plus the Ariados and Lokix...

Then again Fossie apparently snagged a golden Ledian, and that probably counted for a lot of points.

"So do you figure you won?" Kody's voice piped up from behind him.

Koa glanced over his shoulder, then shrugged. "Maybe. I got a few rare ones and a shiny... What about you, do you really want the Anorith?"

Kody shook his head. "I'm just in it for fun honestly."

"And to beat your sister?"

He smirked. "That too. And training. I wasn't really trying to win. Though I do want to see if I can get a Dottler to join me later. There was a nice one I saw during the contest."

The crackle of the microphone cut in, and the trainers gathered fell silent. Amarillo stood on the podium, beaming. "Thank you everyone for your patience! We have tallied all the points and identified our winners. When I call your name, please step forward. Sarah Nao, Jacob Yoshiki, Rikai Hawthorne and Koamaru Averon!"

Hazard buzzed and Koa beamed. Across the throngs of trainers, Koa locked eyes with Fossie. The fossil trainer's expression was unreadable and infuriatingly calm. Confident, as if he didn't expect to lose.

I'll show you.

AN: That wraps up chapter 34! The return of Hazard's mother, Koa makes up (mostly) with Blake, and the return of Fossie! Lots of fun teases in this, a little manga easter egg nod for the funsies, and fun times at the festival. This chapter was a joy to write even if it gave me trouble. I really enjoyed trying to think of what a big festival like this might entail and the kinds of crafts and foods and other games there could be.

I am also looking forward to some more Fossie :}. What will come of this little tournament, I wonder?

As always, I enjoy hearing thoughts and feelings! Thank you greatly to all my regular reviewers and my new ones. I am grateful as ever!

Oh it's time.

Koa threatened to toss him off his shoulder.
ba-dum-tsh
"Nah thats all Galactic stuff and those dragons, what's those Johto things got to do with that? Nothing, that's what. Now if you want real story, the curse is because the league totally covered up everythin' and Galactic is still trying to catch Dialga and Palkia. They're only saying Cyrus vanished because he escaped."
I'm sorry, this got me thinking there's a Sinnoh conspiracy called #CyrusDidntKillHimself where they say Cynthia murdered him and fed him to her Garchomp because he knew too much.

EDIT: Read the first chapter again and:
Bun Girl snorted and rolled her eyes. "Please. Just because a crazy cult tried to catch some legendary pokemon doesn't make them real. Or if they were, that they're still around." She looked around the group, as if trying to see who agreed with her. "Anyways, if they ever existed, they're probably long dead by now and left us to our devices. Besides, the news was pretty clear that Galactic never caught anything. All they had was some insane plans."

And I suppose you believe everything you hear on the news? Koa bit his tongue. He couldn't blame them though, the general public only knew fragments of the truth. How they professed to want a better world and claimed to be a good organization. Only after they'd been stopped by Cynthia did the rest of their plans come out. Plans to catch the Lake pokemon and use their power to enslave Dialga and Palkia and destroy the universe.

The news never said how close they'd really gotten. And the public never knew. Not about Galactic successfully kidnapping Sinnoh's sacred Lake Spirits to harvest their power, and not about the Red Chain they'd made. As far as they were concerned a delusional cult attacked Mt Coronet's peak and the Spear Pillar, but it was an act of terrorism and that was all.
Yeah, people just straight-up don't know he's in the Distortion World, huh?
I may need to re-read then, but I don't remember how Koa knows the truth... Like why he knows what really happened and everyone else gets the nice media narrative.

'Oh my lakes' is such a funny little expression. And yeesh, Koa sure is shaken, huh?
Do not look for me.
:eyes:
Koa found himself grinning at the sight. It'd been so many months since his journey had first begun and he got the little Joltik after rescuing his mother from that poacher... And now they'd found each other again.
Awww 🥺
"Never blindly trust, because everyone has an agenda." Blake spoke forcefully.

He dug his fingers into his sleeping bag. "Yeah. I know. I don't know what that's gotta do with Kitto."
Hmm 🤨 Sus. Introducing a little tension between our boys, I see.
By the time Koa had made his way through the craft section with Hazard, his wallet was hurting.
I feel the exact same way anytime I go to the book convention 😔
Koa wondered if he might be it. More than anything though, he wanted a chance to beat Fossie at something. Even if it was just catching bugs. Pettiness was a powerful motivator.
Damn right it is!! You show that guy what for!

What a nice chapter! And very interesting bit about Ho-oh. I am inclined to agree with the old man that Ho-oh isn't choosing people to have cosmic destinies. Just, you know, maybe saying he vibes with random kids he finds. Who knows what goes on in Ho-oh's brain. Have you seen the size of his head?

And I also like the idea that Johto still has a fair amount of traditionalism with regards to legend worship and that Sinnoh used to be like that until The Events got people thinking otherwise. Sinnoh/Johto feel somewhat like parallel regions, in a sense, and not just because they both had Gen 4 games. More than, say, Kanto/Hoenn, they really delve into the idea that the legendary Pokemon are an important part of the past and one that continues today. Koa, of course, is going to prove everyone wrong and show them there's a right way to deal with legendaries.

LEGENDARY ADVENTURES

NOW IN LIVE ACTION!

I am so proud and happy to announce that hollywood has bought the rights to Legendary Adventures and promises to turn it into a beloved live action adaptation that will stun viewers everywhere! They have assured me this will be an incredibly accurate, high quality faithful adaptation.

I have been informed that they have picked an actor for Koa, 14 year old kid from Sinnoh and lover of legendaries!:

yd6rt4.webp

They've assured me that the age won't be a problem. He's even got a streak of blue!

I've also been sent a finished image of Echo! How exciting!

6zma1u.webp

So cool!

I am told Koa will meet Echo in the final 15 minutes of the film and team up with him. Er. Her! Disney said it's important to have female voices be represented, so Echo will be a female in this.

They also believed Koa's canon backstory wasn't appealing enough to target demographics. Instead, he will be a kid pulled from an ordinary world of earth and ends up in the wild world of thse strange monsters called pokemon! I know the original version of LA is a lot about Koa's legacy and dreams, but Disney has assured me this small alteration will be great for the story.

They have also gone ahead and told me that they will be including a romance to appeal to a more broad audience. Koa will have to choose between a new character who will be a snarky chilhood friend (him not having any friends as a kid isn't in this) and a super attractive nice girl who will also be there. (Avis will be included, but as a brief cameo). Both girls will also hate each other.

Sadly they've told me there's no space in the story for Kitto to be a major character, not enough time. Oh well! These are how movies go. However I have been informed he will have a role still, and he's been cast!

Isn't that perfect?? I am sure that the age won't be an issue either, can you just imagine him next to Taylor Lautner's Koa?

They said they won't be doing the white hair or red eyes though.

Koa will have an incredibly interesting character arc in this, they've generously given me some details about it. Koa will be insecure and nervous, doesn't like books or really want to go on a journey but his cousin makes him. Then he will learn to overcome his fears and find out the power he needed was inside him all along, and he just needs to believe in himself.

The villain of course, will be a huge focus. While I originally had plans for a fairly malevolent villain, Disney has informed me that's not realistic enough, so instead its being tweaked juuusst a bit! The villain will be pretty bad and kill a lot of people, but then he will have a special moment where he explains how his parents were killed by legendaries, and then thats why he's doing all this! Koa will realize the villain was just troubled and sad. Not a bad guy at all.

Lastly I've been informed there will be a major evolution scene early on for Hazard. Apparently, him not evolving will likely be pretty boring for audiences and they have a spider leftover from another movie. Neat!

3c8c1o.jpg

Rascal will have 5 minutes of screentime at the very end of the movie, as the budget isn't enough to allow her to be onscreen long. Anubis will be played by a regular doberman and Scrapper will show up for a few minutes in the scene where he's caught. Oh, Flurry? She will be all over the trailers so they can sell toys but mostly won't do a ton plotwise.

Upon reflection that seems like a lot of changes but I am sure this will all be fine.

I am so happy that LA will be in LA!

I showed them my idea for a poster, and they came back with some great adjustments that will represent the final product.

Absolutely amazing! I always believed in the power of your story to reach the silver screen. You're gonna be a star, baby. Taylor is truly exactly who I imagined to be the one to bring Koa to life. Maybe Taylor Swift could play one of the romantic leads! You know, Taylor x Taylor? And it'll bring in cross-fandom pollination. I see a soundtrack promotion coming along where the lead single is something like "Never Give Up (On Your Dreams)."

Rascal's more modest role is understandable. CGI is just so expensive and I'm sure all the money had to go to securing Taylor's contract. In any case, it's not really Rascal's story. It's all about Koa, his shyness, and how much of a book-loving nerd he is. That's what we all truly come to read LA for, after all. And Hazard's evolved form is exciting! It's about time he got over this nonsense about not evolving. Trust the studio bigwigs... they always have the best interests of the story at heart.

I look forward to the red carpet premiere of this star-studded production. 📸

Chapter 35: Laying Down the Jaw
Happy 6 years of Legendary Adventures!

Exactly 6 years ago to date I rebooted my old fic (New Horizons) with Zubat starter a new Koa and a fresh coat of paint and posted it to ffn. Here I still am, years later, still plugging away. It's been slow and fast, life has been crazy but I am so grateful for each and every reader, reviewer and commenter who has invested time into this story.

Genuinely you guys keep me going. Thank you :D

Recap:

The Silver Wind Festival is in full swing! After a time of festivities, Koa entered the bug catching contest, with his eyes on the prize - an Anorith. And more importantly, beat Fossie and rub it in his face. He successfully scored highly in the contest, thanks to Hazard's help and a keen eyed catch of a shiny Blipbug.

Now he just has to win the battle rounds to earn his triumph over Fossie.

"And the winner of Round One is Koamaru Averon!"

Koa exhaled and grinned. He'd picked Hazard for his first battle, counting on his tactics and stature to catch his opponent off guard. And it had worked, at first.

His opponent, a trainer named Jacob, had used a sturdy blue Shellos. The thing was unreasonably tough, but Hazard had more power than it. Then it had evolved mid-battle into a Gastrodon, which almost made things tricky.

Koa had never been so glad before that Hazard knew Giga Drain.

Afterwards, he'd shaken hands with the hiker, who had seemed disappointed but ultimately proud of his pokemon evolving. "That's one fine little bug you got there," he'd said with a chuckle. Hazard had beamed at the praise.

That just left Fossie's match.

Koa took his place on the sidelines beside Kitto as Fossie and his opponent took the field.

"Our second match today is between Sarah Nao and Rikai "Fossie" Hawthorne! Trainers, ready your pokeballs!"

The referee called the match and a Luxray burst onto the field, followed a second later by Fossie's Kabutops. "Sick," he breathed. A rush of brief childish envy filled him at the sight of the majestic feline. Even if he had no regrets about his team, it didn't change that he thought they were cool.

Kabutops dropped into a battle crouch as Luxray bared its fangs.

"Begin!"

Brown and blue blurred across the field, sparks flew and claws met blades. The shouts of the trainers faded into the background as Koa watched the two pokemon clash. Fossie's opponent was no pushover, that much was clear.

But Fossie was a former league competitor.

In the space of less than five minutes, the fight was Luxray passed out having tried a final gambit with a full powered Wild Charge which Kabutops managed to withstand.

As bad as Koa felt for the other trainer (and disappointed to see Luxray lose), he couldn't suppress the thrill of excitement that ran through him. Finally.

When it was time to take the field, he almost sprinted into place.

Fossie's mouth twitched into a mild frown as he faced Koa, and Koa glared back. He didn't take his eyes off the boy as the referee called the rules of the match, and then for the trainers to send out their pokemon.

Without hesitation, Koa grabbed a black pokeball, running his thumb over its amber colored helix design.

Two hulking dinosaur pokemon appeared on the field, one blue and the other reddish brown. Gasps of shock and admiration rolled through the ground at the sight of the two. Even Koa couldn't suppress the rush of awe at the sight of the blue-scaled Tyrantrum again. Cobalt, if he remembered right.

Cobalt raised his head, basking in the praise.

Rascal looked like she almost wanted to do the same, but caught herself at the last moment. Fossie gave a sharp whistle and finally, Cobalt gave up preening and focused on Rascal, still looking haughty.

Koa felt the earth rumbling as a building growl rippled through the air and ground. Shivers ran down his spine. Cobalt was older than Rascal. By his estimate, a good few months older. But... Now, seeing them side by side, he could see Rascal was actually slightly bigger now that she'd evolved. Definitely younger looking, but an edge in weight and size. Perhaps due to Rascal being female, or Cobalt's shiny gene?

However, Cobalt's skull crest was more defined and bigger, whereas Rascal's jaws were a bit larger and wider.

Ah. Cobalt probably had Rock Head as his ability.

Koa quickly ran through the techniques that a Tyrantrum could learn, trying to figure out what Fossie would have taught Cobalt. Head Smash. A powerful rock attack that hit with such force it actually hurt the pokemon trying to use it. He remembered considering trying to teach it to Rascal before dismissing the idea. Instinct told him Fossie definitely taught it to Cobalt.

Koa took a moment to steady himself as the match was called. A plan had been formulating from the moment he'd planned to fight Fossie and use Rascal.

Rascal and Cobalt had a different idea. Letting loose titanic roars, they charged across the field straight for each other. They collided with a crack! that rattled Koa to his bones.

They thrashed and nipped at each other, fighting for a grip with their claws. Their hind claws dug gouges into the earth as they fought for dominance and the higher position, each twisting their great heads to try and grab the other in their jaws. Even Fossie looked slightly taken aback.

With a snarl, Cobalt drove his head into Rascal's chest, then heaved upwards, catching her and unbalancing her. She gave a startled grunt and staggered back. Cobalt snatched the opportunity like a true predator. Pivoting, he spun and slammed his tail into her side, breaking their brief stalemate and sending Rascal half-skidding half-stumbling onto her side.

Fossie smirked. "Dragon Dance!"

Cobalt bellowed in a way Koa could only interpret as disgustingly smug, then began stamping his feet rhythmically into the earth. It sounded like thunderous drums, and every hit made the earth vibrate from the force. His tail swayed and head bobbed to ancient notes as the fossil pokemon called forth draconic energy and suffused it into his limbs and whole body.

Light caught on his blue scales, blending with indigo tinted dragon energy and making his entire body glow.

An impressed 'ooooo' rippled through the crowd and Cobalt drank in the awe while Fossie rolled his eyes.

Koa silently cursed him. Dreadfully useful technique.

Rascal, meanwhile, shook off her daze in a few seconds and rose to her feet, giving a low rumble as she began to pace around Cobalt. Her gaze burned with annoyance that she'd lost their first brief clash, and clearly seeing another pokemon as prideful as her didn't help.

"Easy Rascal. This changes nothing." Dragon Dance told him a lot about Fossie's battle style with Cobalt. Speed and power. He had a decent guess what move was coming next.

Okay. He could handle that. Koa caught Rascal's eye. "We got this," he said in a low voice. "But we have to play it smart too, okay? Keep it down and keep it together."

Her eyes narrowed, a gleam entering them.

"Ancient Power! Make some space."

For a moment, he wasn't sure if Rascal even heard him. There was a moment he could almost sense that candle flame of anger beginning to flare up in her. Then she gave a nod and roared. She summoned the silver energy into a large boulder. With effort, she held the attack for a split second to aim it. Then she loosed it right at Cobalt's chest as she loped away.

The attack crashed into Cobalt, disrupting his dance, though he looked barely fazed. At the same time, a flash of silver aura flashed around Rascal. Perfect. The telltale flash showed the effect he desperately sought - the ancient energies of the move had boosted her power. Not necessary for his plan but an incredible boon.

"Quick, one more!" he called to Rascal. This time, she fired much more rapidly, not taking time to build up power, just shooting a small boulder across the field.

Cobalt, who resumed his Dragon Dance, was disrupted as it nailed him on the side of his head. He growled irritably.

"Head Smash!" Fossie called.

Rascal was already preparing another strike with Ancient Power, this time letting it build. She loosed it as he charged.

Roaring, Cobalt tossed his head, letting light catch his crest. Then he charged forward. Golden energy blazed to life around the crest, near doubling it in size. He smashed through the Ancient Power with ease, moving like a blue freight train toward Rascal.

Koa drew a sharp breath, tensing in time with Rascal. Wait for it... "Now!"

Rascal stepped and pivoted at the last second, letting Cobalt sweep past her. Yes—

Then Cobalt planted one leg, jerked to a stop and spun sharply and lunged back at Rascal.

Crap. "Crunch!"

Rascal summoned dark-energy and opened wide.

Crack! Cobalt's head slammed into Rascal's jaws with a force that made Koa and Fossie wince. He thought he saw a tooth fall.

Rascal dug in, her jaws wrapped awkwardly around Cobalt's crest and flaring with dark energy. She gripped him tighter, and Cobalt gave a garbled roar as he winced. A sickly grayish light seemed to crackle across the other Tyrantrum's scales briefly.

A slight grin tugged at Koa's lips. Perfect. Breaking Cobalt's defenses would further help his plan.

Fossie snapped out a command. "Stone Edge!"

A massive spire of stone erupted from the ground, punching Rascal in the jaw. She gave an agonized bellow and staggered back.

Fossie grinned. "Dragon Dance!" Cobalt snarled and once again began to stomp the earth in a rhythmic march, swaying his head in time to a beat, catching the light with his scales and arching his head.

They couldn't afford to let him keep doing that. "Fire Fang!"

Orange flames exploded to life around her jaws and she hurled herself at Cobalt, grasping his arm in her mouth.

Cobalt roared as she caught his arm in her jaws, disrupting the technique.

He knew what might come next though. "Back, Ancient Power!" Just as Koa shouted the command, he heard Fossie call out.

"Stone Edge!"

A barrage of pointed spires erupted from the earth, but Rascal had already released her grip and heaved herself backward. One struck a glancing blow on her side, but she otherwise was unharmed.

Fossie wasted no time. "Stomping Tantrum."

The transition was seamless. Tossing his head in a showy manner, Cobalt brought down his hindleg, cracking the ground. Chunks of earth shot across the field, battering Rascal's head and making her stagger from the force of the blow.

Koa winced.

Rascal's retaliatory Ancient Power nailed Cobalt in the jaw, but only barely seemed to affect him. She was breathing hard, and he could see a cracked scale where the attack had hit her.

Koa couldn't help but admire Fossie's strategy. The attack and timing paid off perfectly. Stone Edge and Head Smash were potentially powerful moves that were hard to aim. So if those failed, he could fall back on Stomping Tantrum, drawing on his pokemon's natural anger to strengthen his attack. Combine that with Dragon Dance...

Annoying, in a word. Clever too.

Cobalt, meanwhile, tipped his head to gaze down at where Rascal had bitten him. The scales were chipped and charred, superficially blackened. His nose wrinkled in distaste and he pulled his foreclaw close to his chest.

Hah! Take that! Koa thought snidely. Evidently he didn't care for getting his precious scales too dirty.

"Another Dragon Dance," Fossie called.

Cobalt immediately began to sway in rhythm again, his scales shimmering in the sun as he pranced about. A ripple of awe ran through the audience, and the Tyrantrum basked in the attention once more.

Rascal was growling, clearly irritated by Cobalt showing off, like he wasn't even worried about the battle. "It's okay Rascal, we got this. Time for a distraction."

Widening her stance, Rascal let her power suffuse into the ground, spreading out, ripping up stone from earth. She'd been getting better at using the move this way. He had to trust it would be enough.

An array of stones shimmering in purple aura rose up in front of Cobalt, hovering in the air around him. Cobalt's lips drew into a snarl.

With a snort, Fossie lazily called out his next command. "Head Smash. End this."

Cobalt lowered his head. His legs tensed, then he exploded forward with a terrifying burst of speed, faster than Koa even anticipated.

"Bring him down! Bury him!" he shouted frantically.

If she moved, she would lose control of her attack, so instead she frantically struck out at his legs with the rocks as he thundered toward her, then brought down more rocks on top of his head. Nothing stopped him. If he felt it, he didn't show it.

Cobalt slammed into Rascal before she had a chance to even try to dodge. The force of the hit carried her off her feet and several feet before she hit the ground and slid, leaving a furrow in the earth.

Rascal's eyes shot open, anger burning in her gaze. Across the field, Cobalt preened again in the sunlight, and the audience began to clap and cheer. The anger in Rascal's eyes catalyzed into a searing rage.

"Rascal!" he called forcefully. "Remember, push it down! Focus!"

For a moment, she seemed to struggle, looking ready to fly at Cobalt in a frenzy. But then with great difficulty she seemed to reign herself in.

Koa quickly took in the situation. Rascal was clearly more tired than Cobalt. And while the burn he'd received was bothering him, it wasn't enough to bring him down, nor were the other minor attacks. But for his idea to work, he still needed a better angle. And he needed to goad Fossie into another attack now that he had an idea of Cobalt's speed.

Calm resolve settled over him. "Okay Rascal. Stay close. Harass him with Crunch, get him mad."

Tucking her legs under her, she lunged forward, clearing the ground in a few strides. Cobalt braced, but at the last moment Rascal shifted to her right, moving past Cobalt and grabbing his tail.

He roared, high pitched and surprised. He gave a mighty yank to try and pull free, but only succeeded in dragging her with him.

She dodged as he summoned a Stone Edge again, then lunged away as he lashed out with Stomping Tantrum. But not far, as soon as the attack shot past she leaped back in, jaws blazing.

The two fell into a brief flurry of exchanges, with Rascal biting him at every opportunity, while Cobalt had struggled to keep her at bay. He was stronger, and faster, but her size and jaw strength meant every bite she got him with hurt. And by staying close, it made it hard for Cobalt to effectively use Head Smash.

But Koa knew even that wouldn't be enough for his plan, not yet. Not until Fossie did what Koa hoped he would again.

And then it happened. A well-executed Stone Edge drove Rascal back, corralling her as she tried to dodge, stabbing into her and glancing off her, driving her back. The final spire jabbed her belly, unbalancing her as she snarled in pain. Cobalt took off, moving around the fielding and looping around to the far side.

His hide was peppered with the evidence of her attacks, a fact which Koa felt a little smug about. Rascal had put up an amazing fight, no matter what happened.

The two prehistoric pokemon faced each other across the field, now at opposite ends. Fossie still seemed as unbothered as ever, his expression mirroring his pokemons. With a stamp of his foot, Cobalt brought forth a column of rock on either side of the two, forming a direct path to Rascal, locking them into a narrow lane. Then he lowered his head.

This was it. Their last best chance. "Rascal, brace."

She huffed and shot him an impatient look, but nodded.

Cobalt, still clutching his burnt forelimb to his chest, charged. Golden energy blazed across his crest.

Rascal widened her own stance and braced. Across the field, Fossie seemed unimpressed by the idea.

Koa drew a breath, trying to time the action perfectly. "Now! Trip!"

The energy Rascal had been storing since a few seconds ago surged. Rippled across the makeshift corridor then shifted the ground just as Cobalt stepped. His foot went straight into an unexpected newly formed divot in the earth left by Ancient Power.

With his momentum and speed he flew forward, landing on his belly and skidding chin-first several feet.

Yes! An opening Cobalt wouldn't be able to retaliate.

Rascal didn't hesitate. Triumphant, feral fury blazed to life in her eyes as she saw her enemy downed on his belly only a couple feet away.

In one fluid motion she rose and leaped. Her full body weight slammed into the blue Tyrantrum as she landed, bringing her greater weight on top of him to pin him. Icy blue energy flared around her jaws and she clamped down on Cobalt's neck.

The Tyrantrum's snarl turned into a choked noise and he attempted to heave himself upright to little success. His landing had left his legs in an awkward position behind him, giving him no leverage. He thrashed and staggered, trying to dislodge her, but her jaw strength was unparalleled, even against one of her own species. That combined with the slight size advantage was all she needed.

A predatory gleam burned in her eyes, and Koa even felt a brief flicker of dark pride at the sheer savage delight she displayed. After everything Fossie had done on Iron Island, it felt good to get the upper hand.

Cobalt managed to rise a few feet off the earth but Rascal bit even harder, the savage gleam becoming angry as she heaved against him, trying to force him to the ground.

"Cobalt!" For the first time, proper shock carried through Fossie's voice.

Cobalt scrabbled desperately but his energy was clearly fading. Ice began to form around his neck, the frost creeping over his scales as his struggles slowed. Rascal's jaws were hooked in fully and she had no plans of releasing him.

There was nowhere to go or act. With Rascal pinning him effectively, he couldn't get off an attack, couldn't reach her with jaws or claws, and couldn't dislodge her.

He gave once last heave, twisting to try and throw her off, only to collapse.

Red light cut across the field, wrapping around Cobalt as Koa saw the referee raise a hand to call the match. Rascal's jaws shut on air with a resounding snap! And she was alone on the field. The smoldering anger in her eyes turned to triumph. She roared her trademark victory to the skies.

The crowd, who'd been stunned briefly into awed silence, erupted into cheers. The noise nearly drowned out the voice of the referee calling the match.

Koa's cheeks hurt from grinning so hard. Pride overshadowed every other emotion, filling him as Rascal relished her victory. Beating Fossie so strongly felt oh so good. He let her have a moment, then he took out her ball and returned her. He murmured a congratulations to her pokeball before putting it on his belt.

Across the field, he saw Fossie glare at him. Koa returned it with a smug grin of his own, and Fossie rolled his eyes before crossing the field to him. "Not bad. Your Tyrantrum is impressive. Can't say I'm happy about your little stunt, but it worked. This time. Congratulations."

For a moment, Koa hesitated. He couldn't get a read on if Fossie was actually sincere. And it was hard to forget what he'd said and done on Iron Island. "Thanks," he said somewhat stiffly.

The crowds began to disperse, chattering among themselves. Wearing a beaming smile, Amarillo strode over and congratulated both of them, then led them to the sidelines.

Anorith awaited there, sitting comfortably atop her pedestal. She'd evidently watched the battle, as she was gazing at the two of them with looks of fascination. Amarillo held a Fossil Ball in one hand, and handed it to Koa.

"Anorith, say hello to your new partner."

Eyes shining, Anorith hopped off her pedestal.

Slowly, she started toward Koa.

Then walked straight past him and over to Fossie. She made a low churring noise and clicked her front claws together eagerly.

Koa gaped and blinked. Amarillo looked taken aback, but quickly recovered. She knelt next to Anorith. "So you want to go with Mr. Hawthorne?" she asked.

The fossil pokemon nodded. It was impossible to doubt the eagerness in Anorith's gaze when she looked at Fossie. Of course she did. They were a perfect match. It was downright annoying how well she fit.

Amarillo turned to him with an apologetic smile. "Mr. Averon, it seems Anorith has taken quite a shine to Mr. Hawthorne."

Anger surged through Koa and he quickly swallowed it. He made himself smile, though he was sure it was strained. Anorith wanted this, and he hardly wanted an unwilling teammate. Still, it was hard to get past the sheer petty annoyance of it all. Even if Anorith wasn't a planned seventh pokemon the idea had had a certain appeal. Whatever. Besides, more than anything he'd wanted to show up Fossie. Which he'd done by winning. Fine.

"Unfortunately we have no secondary pokemon to offer."

Seriously?

"But given the circumstances, we will provide an ample prize to compensate in addition to the usual second place prize." She turned to Fossie. "Mr Hawthorne, I take it you are fine with yours?"

Fossie's eyes were gleaming with delight and triumph. Koa wanted to wipe it off his face, even if a part of him was glad for Anorith. "Absolutely."

Amarillo nodded, satisfied. "Excellent." She handed off Anorith's pokeball to Fossie, who took it and thanked her as he returned her. Then he shot Koa a smug grin and waved farewell.

Koa had half a mind to stick his tongue out, but resisted the urge. Instead, he turned to Amarillo.

"Since we'll be providing some extra prizes for taking first place, it'll take some time to arrange everything. You can stop by the Pokemon Center and pick it up this evening."

Koa thanked her, then with Hazard, headed back to find Kitto. He pushed the last of his anger away. Even if he'd lost the prize, he'd won what mattered.
His steps were light and spirits high as he wandered his way back through the festival. Victory left a taste sweeter than any honey.

"Remember when you first joined and you could barely use your electricity? And Rascal was just a grumpy Tyrunt?" Koa said to Hazard as they walked. "now look at you two."

Hazard clicked his mandibles and sent out a few sparks. Koa got the sense he was reminiscing too. "You're probably gonna be the world's strongest Joltik soon too," he joked.

His smile grew serious. He wondered for a moment if that was a thing. "World's strongest Joltik..." That did have a nice ring to it. The gleam in Hazard's eyes told him that he thought the same.

A flicker of white hair in a mirror hanging from a vendor's stall caught his eye and he whirled around just as Kitto stepped up to him, hands raised and ready to try and scare him.

"Hah!" Koa crowed triumphantly. "Got you!"

Kitto ruffled his hair. "Looks like you're finally learning! Congratulations on sticking it to Fossie by the way." He took Koa's arm and started to drag him down a walkway between stalls. "Come on, you have to come try this honey-glazed corncob."

The mention of food made Koa suddenly aware of how hungry he was, and he hurried after Kitto eagerly.

A few minutes later they were seated in a clearing a ways away from the crowds, their teams out and hands sticky. Koa was sure he'd never had such good food in his life. Echo looked like he was in heaven, and had already chewed through three cobs while Flurry could eat twice as much now that she was a Sealeo.

It occurred to him that even with the affordability of pokemon food he'd need to do some bigger challenges to support the cost of his team. Especially once she became a Walrein.

While Koa ate, his mind wandered. His win against Fossie had been solid but tricks wouldn't work twice against the same trainer. And they certainly wouldn't win every fight. He found himself reflecting again on the trainers he'd fought. Fossie and his team, Hilgar's combos, and the gym leaders. Byron's Bastiodon was a master of its own niche. Fossie's Tyrantrum made the most of its power and ability.

Though he'd come far, he still had a long way to go to be able to be strong enough. But he didn't just need raw power. Any trainer could get six badges eventually, or even eight. Most did. Truly great ones had to work hard to bridge the gap between having badges and becoming proficient or even a master. There was a good reason many trainers ending up fading out after earning their badges.

No, he needed something more. So far he'd been focusing on training and building his team. His recent battles proved they were plenty strong and skilled in their own rights. But to truly go far he had to figure out how to start honing his team's skills. He stared distantly at his team arrayed before him. Where did he begin?

The Battle Triplets had been off, yes, about their initial outlook. But he couldn't deny the pragmatic side. There was a degree of wisdom in analyzing his team and considering strengths and weaknesses, even innate ones. Hazard had had to work hard to overcome his lack of ability to generate his own electricity.
Maybe he could call Deuce and get some pointers. As frustrating as they had been when he'd first met them, he knew they weren't bad. They had skills and valuable knowledge.

"I think I need to figure out a specialization," he murmured out loud. Hazard glanced up from the cob that was nearly twice his size, listening curiously as he kept nibbling.

"Oh? Might be a tad late to become a type specialist," Kitto said light heartedly.

"Not that," Koa said, rolling his eyes before gnawing on his nearly finished cob, savoring the sweet spice as he organized his thoughts. "It's just, I'm still gonna need to get better. A lot better, to battle a legendary. All the best trainers have some kind of focus. Like the Gym Leaders, Fossie, the Battle Triplets... But I never really thought of one for my team."

Kitto glanced at him curiously, then at Koa's pokemon. "Wait didn't you tell me you had your whole team planned at one point? Before you went on your journey?"

The memory made Koa roll his eyes at his old self. "Yeah but that's different."

"Different how? Didn't you have reasons for your old team? Your 'Perfect' one?"

"Well..." Blinking, Koa paused. That time before his journey felt a lifetime ago. Why had he wanted those pokemon so bad? "I guess I wanted something special back then. And I wanted a lot of different types and skills. Strong pokemon that I thought could fight a legendary and had power." He laughed awkwardly. "And I sort of thought those pokemon were the coolest."A legacy of his own, half the reason the idea of a Crobat had irked him so long ago.

But even back then he'd been naive and hadn't thought of how to bring together his pokemon. They'd always just existed as nebulous ideals.

"But I have to do more if I want to beat a legend. I have to be more... Figure out what I'm good at, what my team is good at, and refine that. Really focusing on something. Make a team." He could already see some obvious strong traits. Speed from Echo, Rascal's raw power. Long ranged attacks from Anubis and martial prowess with Scrapper. And yet...

Yet no singular focus seemed obvious.

"A good idea," Kitto agreed. "Though if you ask me, having a diverse skillset is important too. You know that saying, right? Jack of all trades-"

"But a master of none?"Koa finished.

Kitto nodded. "Except there's another bit that says 'better than a master of one'."

Koa frowned in thought. "Yeah, I've heard that but... look at all the strongest trainers like Lance or Steven or Iris. All the gym leaders and Elite Four." He rolled his eyes. "Even Fossie. I can't just get by on... on..." he waved his hands. "...good vibes and hope. Winning comes from a good balance of skill, work and focus."

"Well you're right about that at least," Kitto pointed out amiably.

"I mean even the best martial artists usually practice only a couple styles. I just don't know what I can do. Everyone on my team is good but I can't make all of them good at one thing. I mean it's not like Rascal can ever outpace Echo or Hazard be as tough as Flurry."

What strength could he possibly focus on? What focus could he refine that his whole team could do? Sure, he did have all dual-typed pokemon on his team but that didn't count for much, as helpful as it sometimes was in battle. None of his pokemon's skills overlapped.

"Isn't Cynthia a generalist?" Kitto pointed out. "And that showoff in Galar, Leon." A determined fire blazed in his eyes. Koa snickered at his choice of words. He had no doubt that Leon and his Charizard were on Kitto's personal list of champions he wanted to defeat.

"Yeah but... Cynthia is Cynthia. And Leon's... I don't remember, but he's known for his Charizard, not for being a generalist."

Kitto shrugged neutrally and hummed, gaze distant.

Tossing his finished cob to Scrapper, who crunched it whole, Koa side-eyed Kitto. "You're usually full of knowledge. Do you have an idea what I should do?"

"Nope," he said. "Team specialties aren't my strong suit, obviously. You're on your own there. But knowing you, you're overthinking. Sometimes complicated questions have simple answers."

He caught a pointed look from Echo at that comment and rolled his eyes. Still, maybe Kitto was right. Maybe the answer was closer than he thought. His thoughts turned back to the weeks leading up to being a trainer, the team he'd dreamt of and why he'd wanted them.

Some of the reasons were a bit shallow admittedly, but there'd been a practical side too. Luxray's x-ray vision for navigation. A powerful water-type like Gyrados for swimming. A close combat specialist like a Tyrogue. A strong flier like a Staraptor. Pokemon known to be predisposed to natural strength. His gaze fell on each of his team members, one by one.

Back then, he'd chosen his team for versatility. Adaptability for any challenge...

In a way, he had still fulfilled his goals. As a Houndoom, Anubis was a valuable tracker. Echo's echolocation was useful both in and out of battle. Scrapper was gifted at combat and Flurry had potential as a powerful swimmer, while Hazard's size had proved a boon many times before. Rascal's strength and brute power was a force to be reckoned with.

"Better than a master of one." He murmured the words aloud.

Leaning back, he studied his team again, then sighed. "I'll also have to see about working on some defenses too..." It was undeniable that aside from Flurry, his team was more offense oriented. "Rascal's tough but even she's better at fighting head on than taking hits. It'll be important to find ways to last long. Especially if I want to fight a legendary." The list of things he wanted to do was beginning to feel daunting.

He realized he'd naively assumed before his journey that a handful of the "right" strong pokemon would somehow make it a cinch to become powerful enough to challenge a legendary. But even if he had caught that team, he still would have needed to work hard to hone that.

Kitto took a thoughtful bite of his corn. "That barrier you created with Scrapper when you fought Fossie on Iron Island was a good idea."

"Oh yeah. And Hazard has his Sticky Shield. That one is pretty sick. Really useful against fire-types especially."

Hazard beamed at the praise, looking thoughtful as he listened.
"After today, I'm gonna keep working with Rascal on her control. I think she could pull off something similar..."

For the rest of the afternoon, Koa relaxed with his team, trading ideas and strategies for the future with Kitto. All the while, the idea in the back of Koa's mind turned the idea over and over. How did he make his six pokemon into a true team?

XXX

A few hours later, tired from exploring the rest of the festival with Kitto, Koa entered the Pokemon Center and gave his name to the nurse. He figured he'd given plenty of time for them to prepare his prize.

The nurse dialed a number on the phone and a couple minutes later, Amarillo strode through the door and approached him. She carried a package in both arms. "I pulled some strings to make sure you got something good," she said brightly.

"There is a small cash reward, and a Dream Ball from a local Apricot carver." Her eyes glimmered and she flashed a grin. Koa blinked. He didn't want to be rude, but he wasn't sure that qualified as particularly impressive. "Oh is that... it?" Smooth.

"Yep," she replied brightly. Then she winked. "Kidding! I got you a voucher for a bike, a set of vitamins and..." She paused dramatically. "Your choice between two TM Sets."

Now those piqued Koa's interest. The bike voucher was technically a moot point since he had one but... Kitto could use that. Then they could both ride bikes. Even more intriguing however was the TM set.

"What are they?" he asked.

Amarillo reached into the box she was holding and withdrew two cube shaped boxes. The sides were slotted with something similar to a CD case but slightly smaller. One box had a sort of starburst like effect, while the other had a cloud with a small sun shape on it. She held up the starburst box. "This set has powerful and rare attack moves. There's Hyper Beam, Giga Impact, Fire Blast, Hydro Pump and Leaf Storm."

Koa was just about ready to take that one immediately.

"This one contains weather moves. Rain Dance, Sunny Day, Sandstorm, Snowscape and Hail, and Defog."

Koa's eyes widened. Those were good prizes. All together the reusable versions of those TM's went for a sizable sum.

The idea of each of his team members being able to use such powerful moves was alluring. He was pretty sure most of them could learn Hyper Beam or Giga Impact. And Anubis could learn Fire Blast. Flurry could get a head start on a powerful water move.

He started to reach for the box, then stopped. The attack moves were undeniably useful. But the TMs for weather moves all together? That had serious value. Weather techniques were notoriously challenging, especially if a pokemon didn't have a knack for it. Not only were they hard to use, but learning to maintain them took time. The TM's would give him the edge on learning them.

It came down to power or technique. Resolve took shape in Koa's mind, and he picked a box.

"You're sure?" Amarillo asked, though there was a flicker of respect in her brown gaze.

Koa nodded without hesitation. "Yeah, I am."

She placed the TM set in the box and handed it to him. "Enjoy your prizes, Mr. Averon. Good luck on your journey."

He grinned at her. "Thank you very much." As she walked away, he gazed down at the box in his arms, with the TM case nestled on top, the sun emblem shining in the overhead lights. The future was looking brighter and brighter.

Fluffy white clouds drifted across a blue sky, carried by a gentle breeze. The sun was beginning to dip towards the horizon, but hadn't yet reached the peaks of the mountains. Koa leaned back on the bench, enjoying the pleasant weather. Kitto was sprawled beside him, equally relaxed, enjoying a honey drizzled ice cream cone.

It had been a few days since he'd beat Fossie in the contest, and the festival was beginning to wind down, giving Koa some much needed peace and quiet. The vendors had been remarkably efficient at breaking down, and a majority had already packed up. They'd spent almost all day for the past few days enjoying the games and contests and the occasional impromptu battles. That left only the late evening to squeeze a bit of training in. Still, it was nice to enjoy the days.

They'd ended their last day by relaxing and taking it easy. Hazard was perched on the backrest of the bench, looking blissfully relaxed. He seemed at peace and content, and Koa was happy. It truly had been worth coming here. Flurry making a new friend and evolving, Hazard reuniting with his mother and even the prizes he'd ended up winning, plus all the useful stuff he'd bought.

His thoughts wandered as he closed his eyes, and he let himself daydream a bit. Each day got him a little closer to his goal. His plans were actually coming together, even if it was in slightly different ways than he expected. Kitto definitely hadn't been in his plan, but he was grateful to have someone to challenge and train with. Without him, he definitely wouldn't be as strong.

'Be careful who you trust. You can only ever trust once.'

Blake's words rang through his thoughts. Blake was right, they always had to be careful, but he felt certain that Kitto could be truly trusted. With everything.

He turned his thoughts toward his journey.

Now they could get their last two badges together. He already planned to challenge the gym at Sunyshore next. But what he didn't know was how he would get there. Sunyshore was quite literally on the other side of the region. He could try and catch a ferry, the same way he'd gotten from Veilstone to Canalave. Of course that would mean traveling to a port. Or he could try and catch a ride via Drifblim Air.

Every region had developed their own taxi services with pokemon aid in the past decades. Alolan officials had been the one to push for it, as they felt it important to work alongside pokemon instead of relying on machines solely. Hoenn had TropTaxi with Tropius. Kanto and Johto relied on Pidge-Air. Sinnoh had gone a more unusual route and partnered with Drifblim.

He was impatient to get his last two badges, and he felt properly confident his team could handle Sunyshore. Not like when he'd faced Maylene, full of was a calm certainty. As he understood, there was a new gym leader there, since Volkner took up a spot in the Elite 4 and Bertha retired. He planned to research her when he arrived.

If he used some of his saved up money on a DrifblimAir taxi he could be there by the end of the day tomorrow. Which meant he could have his gym badge in under a week. That just left Snowpoint. He wasn't exactly looking forward to the arduous hike through the snowy hills of Route 217, but it was considered a rite of passage for trainers and he wouldn't skip it.

The longer he considered it, the more appealing it sounded, getting his seventh badge soon...

Movement in the corner of his eye caught his attention and he glanced over to see Hazard returning from wherever it was he'd been hanging out. The Joltik emerged from some bushes, followed by a small blue and yellow shape inching after him.

Confused, Koa watched as the two pokemon came up to the bench. After a moment, he recognized the pokemon as a Blipbug. A vaguely familiar one. He felt oddly sure it was the weird shiny one they'd run into during the contest. What was it doing all the way out here?

Koa watched curiously as Hazard hopped onto the bench, and shortly after the Blipbug inched awkwardly up one of the legs, across Kitto's lap and perched next to Hazard. Baffled, Koa stared at Kitto, who looked back at him and shrugged.

Blipbug bobbed up and down and Hazard made soft chittering noises as he clicked his mandibles together.

"Found a new friend?" Koa ventured after several seconds. Hazard beamed up at him and nodded.

First Contessa, and now this strange shiny Blipbug. It felt like a bizarre and amusing coincidence. He studied the Blipbug closer. There was definitely a sheen to its chitinous skin. "Are you the Blipbug from the contest?"

At first, he wasn't sure if the Blipbug heard him, as it didn't nod or even move. Instead it gazed implacably at him, giant round eye shapes reflecting the sun.

Perplexed, he looked at Hazard, who nodded. So that was a yes, he guessed.

"Well you're welcome to hang out here I guess," he said with a shrug. "I'm leaving in a bit though." He shifted and leaned back on the bench.

The rest of the evening drifted by in a pleasant daze as Koa enjoyed the weather and quiet, making occasional idle conversation with Kitto. Hazard seemed pleased to have made a new friend, and chittered away softly, with the Blipbug content to listen patiently. It was hard to read its expression, though occasionally it would wave its antennae.

As the sun finally began to sink below the mountains on the far horizon, Koa sat up and stretched.

"Alright. Tell your friend goodbye. I'm gonna head back up to the room."

Hazard's eyes gleamed with some emotion Koa couldn't read. In one swift movement he hopped over to Koa, crawled up his leg and then into his jacket pocket, and used a bit of sticky thread to pull out the Dream Ball Koa'd put there.

Koa had no time to react as Hazard dragged the pokeball across the bench, rolled it over and right into the Blipbug. In a flash of light, it was gone and only the ball remained. A second later, the ball dinged.

Koa blinked. "What."

AN: Well well well... whats this?

Guess you'll have to see how the next chapter goes!

(I have some backlog so I hope to have it up soon.)

Aside from the surprise at the end, I stressed but had a lot of fun with the battle against Fossie. I mean two Tyrantrum duking it out is just. Dinosaur peak. I have a reason I'm bringing this guy back up and its always fun to revisit old characters. I also like to think a lot about pokemon battles and I think that it must be awfully hard to be a good trainer. Bringing 6 individuals together and then teaching them and finding their strengths? Even harder if you're not a type specialist.

I did channel a little of my personal contemplations into Koa's discussion with Kitto. Koa's gonna have to find a new edge to push past some invisible barriers and level up. Surely nothing else willhappen on his journey to disrupt him. Right.? Right?

As ever and always, thank you again for everyone who reads, thank you for your comments! Perhaps I will start answering reviews again in my AN? I miss hearing and responding to your guys thoughts. If anyone has any questons or comments on the story so far I'll try to answer them next time I update!
