"Emeras!" she cried, running over to them and scooping them up. "All mine~"

Robin scooping up emeras like a kid finding candy on the ground made me laugh. Nina comparing her to a Gabite or Murkrow, and then Lifis has to step in with its for her arrows like hes used to explaining his partners weird behavior to strangers is a lot of fun.

the banter in this chapter clicks well in general! you can feel the group dynamic settling in and its nice to see Nina loosening up enough to find something funny even if shes not fully there yet

…Odd. Why was that inscription not buried by the snow? Is…someone here?

small detail but i liked this. Ninas survival instincts picking up on something everyone else would walk past.

"Maybe that's what happened? That voice couldn't change me because they were interrupted?"

the transformation mystery is always a fun question and is quietly one of the bigger mysteries building in the background and i appreciate that its not being forced, just developing naturally through conversation

Are you sure those are the feelings you wish to leave on, Celebi Aega?

chapter 9 opens with Aega and this is where i have some mixed feelings? the mystery voice pushing her on her feelings for Lifis is fine as a concept but it reads a little like a therapy session where the therapist already knows the answer and is just waiting for the patient to admit it. the voice is being SO pointed about it, that it doesnt leave much room for Aega to arrive at anything on her own. she mostly just gets flustered and deflects

that said the underlying tension is real. she knows this is goodbye. she knows the plan requires her to stay behind. the feelings she hasnt said are feelings she might never get to say and that clock is ticking whether she acknowledges it or not :(

"In all the time I've been alive, some of my deepest regrets have been the words that I wished I'd said to loved ones who perished…"

Sam.

Raijin.

Matrona.

mann,,,. Nina telling Lifis to say the words while he still can, and the weight behind it of all these people she never got to say goodbye to properly. its also a sign of how far Nina has come in just a few chapters. shes not just tolerating these two anymore, shes actively trying to protect Lifis from the kind of pain she carries. ;c;;; Ninaaaa beloveddd

"That's enough from you!"

And then stabbed it into the Abomasnow's thick hide.

Robin climbing onto its back and stabbing a fire emera arrow directly into it like shes fighting a Shadow of the Colossus boss is the most Robin thing that could possibly happen LMAOO. she has like no way to get at it, and her response is to just physically get on the thing and stab it. everything about her fighting style has been improvisation and refusal to quit and this is the peak

"My name is Skathi," the Froslass spoke. "And I am the Voice of Life."

Skathi showing up at the end as the Voice of Lifein a world thats been dead for three centuries thats one hell of a title to drop. especially since shes a Froslass which is an ice/ghost type, so you have this entity associated with life inhabiting a form associated with death and cold. curious to see what her deal actually is because right now shes giving cryptic benefactor energy and i dont fully trust that yet

the Abomasnow fight does have some back-and-forth in the middle that blends together before Robin makes her move, trimming the exchanges where Nina fires a flamethrower and gets hit and fires another flamethrower would make Robins moment punch through harder

overall a really fun set of chapters! im actually so close to finishing the last few and im so excited to see where it's at- until i have to have the dreaded wait of waiting for more! ;c; this is a lot of fun and really great job so far! :D

"I am the voice of all of nature. Every last mountain, river, tree, and blade of grass in this world…" She gazed around her, at the unmoving landscape and floating ice floes. "Even in its diminished and faltering state, there are still exclamations of joy and cries of pain in this world. Each one is an act of rebellion against life's fate."

the concept of the Voice of Life being the collective voice of every mountain and river and blade of grass in a world where all of those things are frozen and dying is reaaaaaaallly good, i always love that :D

"...You would understand were you in my place, human." Skathi's tone, though composed, seemed to disguise an edge to it. "No plan ended up scuppered, and you all ended up alive and in one piece–"

"No," Lifis cut in before the Voice of Life could continue. "Not all of us."

ohohoho... because Skathi keeps framing everything in terms of the bigger picture, Aega is the lifeline, keeping her safe was the priority, the plan succeeded, and the crew keeps hitting back with the human cost. Pelle died for this detour and Skathi didnt even know. theres something almost cruel about how logical her reasoning is versus how much it cost them

the Voice of Life exposition section before the confrontation drags a bit though. theres a lot of explaining what the Voice of Life is, how the summoning process functions, why Robin didnt transform, the connection to the Air Continent crisis, all stuff we need but delivered in a stretch that feels more like Q&A. the bits that are really really good when the characters actually push back on Skathi rather than just asking questions and receiving answers

"He was…nearing the end of his life and growing quite frail. He did not tell that to either of you–" Aega directed her gaze at Robin and Lifis. "He only wanted you to focus on the mission at hand. Above all, he only feared a futile death. He told me multiple times he would be glad to perish if he knew it'd let the world see the sun once again."

Aega revealing that Pelle was already dying and hid it from Robin and Lifis puts his whole sacrifice in a different light. it wasnt just selflessness, it was a man choosing the terms of an ending that was coming regardless. man... that echoes what Robin pitched to Nina at the campfire. dying for something versus dying for nothing. Pelle got to choose and that mattered to him more than a few more weeks of breathing

Countless charred corpses lay before Nina, in a chunk of land that had been carved through by a powerful beam.

chapter 11 opening with the flashback to Ninas first time seeing Dialga, and the resistance getting wiped in one blast, earns its place immediately. weve been told hes terrifying this whole fic but this is the first time we get to realyl experience it through Ninas memory. really really good stuff!!

"L-Leave me," Nina found herself gasping. "P-Please, you can't forsake your chance now…!"

"...We're all getting through this," the human vowed. "Come on, Nina!"

And before the Ninetales could muster a reply, she suddenly found herself being lifted up by Robin.

man, Nina has spent three hundred years being the one who runs alone, the one who survives by not relying on anyone because relying on people gets them killed. and now shes being carried. literally. by this weird human who cant even keep up on a jog. ;c;;;

My heart aches for you, O Timekeeper. Truly, it is painful to see you in this state.

and then Skathi talking to Primal Dialga at the end, addressing him with real sorrow rather than defiance is a choice i didnt expect, theyre saving Dialga from himself. the fact that Skathi sees the god underneath the madness and still pities him even as hes trying to kill everyone is a strong beat. and of course it goes completely unheard because hes too far gone to process anything but enemies. i dont think ive seen that angle for dialga before but is really really nice.

okay so thats everything posted so far!! 🎺 totototooot! what are my thoughts so far!

Nina is the beating heart of this fic and its really good, her arc from terrified Vulpix to hardened killer to someone slowly cracking open is always a really good arch i love getting to read. i love sitting down with these characters and letting them really talk through their emotions in a way that is really engaging and fun.

Robin is a fun wildcard and i like that she stays scrappy and distinctly herself throughout. shes got personality and it contrasts well with Ninas heaviness

the thread running through this whole fic about choosing how you die from what i can tell. Pelle choosing sacrifice over futility, Robin pitching die for something, Nina wrestling with suicidal ideation versus meaningful sacrifice, it gives this a weight thats a lot of fun and im curious where its going to go

i think the action sequences a little longer than they need to. the beach fight, the Abomasnow, etc. each one has a core moment that delivers but gets diluted by extra rounds of back-and-forth before reaching it. cutting those middle stretches would make the payoff moments punch through harder

theres also a pattern with exposition coming in chunks too, the campfire plan explanation, Skathis Voice of Life lore, the Dimensional Scream rundown, where characters take turns asking questions and getting full paragraph answers. i think it could be done a bit more dyanmically, either by having the characters be doing something as they talk or cutting up the chunks of information with bits of chaos.

chapter 2 covering Ninas entire three hundred year arc in one chapter means some key moments get summarized when they could breathe as scenes. the chapter does a lot of heavy lifting and mostly pulls it off but its fighting against its own compressed timeline. i am hoping we get some flashbacks and i think we will from the way the story is going.

now... Skathi being the one who summoned Robin and also being the one who took Aega feels like theres more going on there than shes admitting, the fact that she knew about the void creature (i can wonder who that is...) but her explanation was pretty vague makes me wonder if shes withholding something. and the void creature itself with the crimson eye that Pelleh described hasnt been explained yet which i expect we will hear up by the end of the book.

really enjoying this so far. looking forward to more! :D

Chapter 12
Celebi Remembers

It had been such a fraught moment at the peak of Dark Ice Mountain that Nina hadn’t even thought about where the Teleport Gem would send them. In that moment, all she cared about was getting away from Primal Dialga, not caring where she ended up. All this time, for three hundred years, one of her greatest fears was Primal Dialga himself coming to snuff out her life. And just a few minutes ago, those fears had very nearly become reality.

But a quick scan of her surroundings told Nina that thankfully, they were no longer in the frigid wastes of Frozen Island. Instead, they appeared to be in a forest of some kind. Vegetation frozen mid-fall, the water stagnant with time’s cessation, floating rocks and cracked earth abound. Conifers shrouded the dark sky around them, with one having fallen and since was hollowed out to make a makeshift seat at. A dug-out pit indicated this place was used as a rest area, with leftover ash and cinders suggesting it had hosted its fair share of campfires.

More to Nina’s relief was the sight of everyone else safe and sound, with Dialga’s towering menace nowhere to be seen.

They’d made it out alive, just barely.

“Hoooooly hell, that was close.” Robin panted, eyes wide with exhilaration. “Geez, I thought we’d had it there!”

“You can say that again.” Lifis slumped down next to a tree. “Gods, I might need a minute…”

“...If it weren’t for Skathi, we’d all be goners.” Nina looked up at the blackened sky, fluffing her tails behind her. “Above all, she’s the one to thank for our survival.”

“Yeah…Voice of Life, huh?” Robin said. “They did power up the Teleport Gem…it didn’t look like it was gonna fire until she worked her magic.”

The human opened her palm where she’d been holding the gem. But immediately her face fell when she looked at her hand.

“...Oh.”

Nina’s ears pricked.

“What’s the matter, Robin?”

“…It’s broken,” Robin murmured.

“Broken?”

Nina turned her head to the human, who held out the gem for the group to see. It had cracked in a few places, and shards fell out, some landing on the ground next to Robin’s boot.

“It got us one last use which saved our lives,” Lifis said, a wistful look on his face as he clenched his fist. “Let’s be grateful it could take that much. It’s what Pellehan would have wanted, for us to be alive and carry out our mission.”

“Pellehan…” Aega bit her lip, wings drooping as she landed on a nearby rock. “He always committed himself to our cause, and to serve me as best he could. It’s hard accepting that after all these years, that he’s really just gone…”

Both Lifis and Robin’s gazes fell to the floor, while Nina’s tails drooped behind her. The loss of an ally was not anyone’s idea of a fortunate outcome.

But if Skathi hadn’t intervened, could the outcome be worse? Nina found herself pondering. If we had to lose either Aega and Pellehan, the choice couldn’t be more obvious. Yet we shouldn’t have had to lose anyone….

“...No. There’s no time to mourn,” Aega said, shaking her head. “We need to get to the Passage of Time as quickly as possible. The sooner this nightmare is over, the sooner we can reunite with everyone we’ve lost.”

“Exactly.” Robin got up from where she’d sat down to rest on a fallen log. “Death’s coming for us either way…but better we save the past than bow to misery here in the present.”

Aega’s wings buzzed as she got up from her rock.

“At least we need not worry about where the Teleport Gem dropped us.” The Celebi gestured around at the forest around them. “Look at where we ended up!”

Nina looked around her. Nothing seemed to stick out to her about this place, but she noted how Lifis and Robin’s eyes seem to light up at their surroundings.

“Well, isn’t that a stroke of luck?” Lifis remarked. “We’ve ended up exactly where we need to go.”

“Dusk Forest…” Robin smiled. “Practically the closest place I can call home here. Not that I ever really had one.”

The smile then turned to a partial frown, followed by a sigh.

“Man, wouldn’t it be great to have a place in the past like that?” she murmured. “Just somewhere to come back to every evening and put your feet up in front of a nice, warm fire?”

Nina had to admit it sounded like a rosy image, almost like when she’d spent evenings at Matrona’s house curled up near her stove all that time ago. The thought of going back to the past, just to have that reality again…

“...Probably not a luxury we’ll be able to afford once we go back to the past,” Lifis sighed, sounding disappointed. “We’ll likely be on the run almost from the start. Don’t you remember what Nina said about how Pokémon back then thought of the Time Gears?”

Nina’s tails drooped, knowing that the Grovyle had a point. Robin flinched and looked away.

“Y-Yeah, I know. But a girl can dream, can’t she?” The human looked away, but even while hiding her face, Nina could hear the hurt in her voice as clear as day.

The Ninetales, herself still saddened, saw fit to cheer Robin up, and nudged her side gently. Even if she still felt awkward letting out her emotions more, she did feel more comfortable among these four to do so.

“You’ll be affording countless others that dream,” she reminded. “They won’t have to live as vagabonds in a doomed land like this one.”

“That’s…true, I guess,” Robin said, smiling slightly. In return, she brought her hand to Nina’s head and…stroked her ear.

Wh-What? The Ninetales froze at the gesture, and Lifis and Aega gazed at the human with questioning looks.

“What?” Robin stopped mid-stroke.

“...Never mind.” Lifis shook his head. “Let’s just get through here. At the end of this place is the Passage of Time, and through there…our destiny.”

“Yeah…bygone days, here we come.” Robin’s smile grew as she pulled her hand back to her side. “Time to chuck this nightmare in the trash where it belongs!”

Without waiting, Robin started down the path, into the Mystery Dungeon that lay before them.

“Wait.” Aega watched her go, confusion crossing her face. “Won’t she need weapons?”

“...Right, her bow got broken....” Lifis muttered, recalling what happened up on Dark Ice Mountain’s summit. “Hey! Robin! Wait up!”

He then darted off into the Mystery Dungeon after her.

“They’re good partners, the two of them,” Aega murmured, as Nina made her way up to her. Together, the two made their own way into Dusk Forest.

But right before they entered, Nina caught the lightest of whispers from the Celebi.

“I’m gonna miss them…”

As the group made their way into Dusk Forest’s Mystery Dungeon, Nina could’ve sworn there was something in the air that gave a hint of mysticism about the place. It was as though there was something ethereal nature about this forest that even time’s collapse could not entirely bury.

… Had she been here sometime long ago? If she had, it certainly hadn’t been called ‘Dusk Forest’, but she couldn’t remember what it used to be. A part of her felt foolish for forgetting. Even if it was a long time ago, she definitely remembered her father talking about some magical forest in this corner of the Grass Continent, and her child self had been in awe over it.

But now wasn’t the right time to try and wrack her brain for those long-lost details. Many ferals constantly threw ailments around in this place, with crazed Mismagius and Jumpluff past every twist and turn throwing the team into disarray with their spores and hexes alike. Even the sight of Celebi, their guardian, failed to placate them.

At one point, a Mothim cast its Sleep Powder over Robin, making the human slump to the ground in unconsciousness. A blast of fire from Nina followed up by a flurry of slashes from Lifis and the feral crumpled to the ground in a series of pained chitters.

Lifis fished a chesto berry out of Robin’s bag and fed it to her, grasping her chin as her eyes fluttered open.

“Up and at ‘em, partner,” he said.

“U-Urgh…D-Damn spores…” Robin let out a yawn as she got to her feet.

“We can sleep when we get to the past,” the Grovyle went on, dusting himself down.

“Oh, you can bet I’ll sleep when we do,” Robin replied, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. “After everything we’ve gone through, I’ll be having one serious nap when we get there. Hopefully in a nice comfy bed and not a cold, forest floor like this one!”

“Rather bold words to say in front of said forest’s guardian.” Nina cocked her head. “You know, if you are going to be fugitives in the past, you might need to tone down your attitude, Robin.”

“Whatever.” The human rolled her eyes, as though she’d been told it a million times. There wasn’t time to follow up her rebuttal, though; a Gabite had honed in on them, claws brandished.

“Behind me, Robin,” Lifis ordered, clenching his fists as his Leaf Blades glowed. “I’ve got this.”

“I’m not useless, you know!” Robin argued, before she began rifling through the bag. “Come on, there’s gotta be something in here…”

Nina jumped in, firing a Shadow Ball at the dragon. A sharp hiss drew from the Gabite as it slashed at Lifis. The Grovyle grunted as the hit grazed his side, but deftly slashed at his opponent. One good slam into him knocked the Gabite back a good bit.

Nina readied a Flamethrower, but as she did so, Robin suddenly ran in front of her with three iron thorns in hand.

“Take this!” She threw one, and it struck true, hitting the Gabite square on the forehead. She threw another, and with a snarl muffled by the earth it fell upon, the feral was out for the count.

“...Thanks for the save,” Lifis said, before his gaze fell to the lone iron thorn remaining. “Don’t get too throw-happy with those. We need them to last.”

“Yes, Dad, I hear you.” Robin’s snark threw Aega into a fit of giggles, while Nina also fought a growing grin upon her muzzle.

Lifis could only shake his head at his partner’s antics, but even he couldn’t resist a wry smile.

“Well, come on then, kid. Let’s get going.” The Grovyle beckoned his hand as he continued down the path before them.

“H-Hey! That’s not how that’s meant to work!” Robin cried. She chased after him, remaining iron thorn in hand in case an enemy jumped them.

“Hee hee hee! They can be so silly sometimes.” Aega was still giggling at their antics, as she buzzed her wings after the two. “Say, if Lifis is the dad and Robin the kid, does that make me the mom?”

Nina, at the rear, resisted a splutter at that remark, before pulling a face.

“That’s a…weird thought,” she replied. “Maybe best not to give that any mind.”

“I wasn’t. But that’s Robin for you, always making weird remarks.” Aega shrugged. “She’s funny. I like having her around. And she and Lifis make a great team too!”

“Mmm. They do, indeed.” Nina continued walking, leaping over a stray root. “By the way, you should know something about Lifis.”

“Oh?” Immediately, Aega’s attention was piqued. “What about him?”

Nina considered her words, and how best to break it to the Celebi. If she was a deity of time, and long-lived…then no doubt she’d know the pain of parting too. The Ninetales looked over at Aega, deciding to come out with it.

“Well, firstly - and please answer honestly,” she said. “Do you have feelings for Lifis?”

Aega froze in shock midair, where her wings suddenly fluttered out of alignment and she fought to right herself.

“...Did Robin tell you that?” she murmured. “Because, uh…y-yeah, it’s sorta like that. A-And I know…I know what that will mean soon, when you all leave for the past and I have to stay here as a failsafe.”

The Celebi looked down at the grey grass, with her face fallen as she bit her lip.

“I’ll tell him before we go through, I promise. Skathi told me the same thing.”

“Oh, did she?” Nina’ ears pricked; she hadn’t expected. But at least it would make the next part a lot easier when Aega knew the gist of it already.

“Lifis was getting agitated about you back on Dark Ice Mountain. He told us about his feelings for you, and we both said you and him need to be open with each other about them before you part ways.”

Nina’s tails flicked behind her, as a serious look crossed her face.

“Please don’t put this off any longer than you have to, Aega. I’ve suffered many losses over the last three hundred years, and the worst deaths were always the ones cut short too soon. Trust me…it’s an unbearable feeling where your words remain unsaid.”

The Ninetales looked off to the side, tails wilting as she was reminded of all the people she’d lost over the years. Part of why she’d been the lone Ashen Fox for all those years was to not have to bear that sort of pain again. If there wasn’t anyone for her to be close to, there would be no one to take advantage of her and stab her in the back. No one to hold her back in a world where it was already normally a struggle just to stay alive and out of Shuranabi’s grasp.

…And no one to weep for when the cruel world inevitably caught up with them.

Perhaps she’d been a fool to have ever thought that it could work. Yes, she’d become physically stronger than the meek Vulpix she used to be, but emotionally? She only had to think back to the whole episode outside Abundant Pass to see how much she’d truly changed…

And had she really gained anything from it all? At least back in the day, she’d confide in others and trust them. There were good people around back in Treasure Town, and even as the world fell apart with time’s collapse, good folks still would have existed. Did she really need to feign aloofness and isolate herself all these years, believing nothing could be done?

Robin, Lifis and Aega were living proof that she could’ve taken a different approach. None of them were happy - how could anyone be happy in this hellscape? - but at least they had a partnership, links beyond that, and motivation that kept them going. Upon falling into this world, Robin could easily have chosen to just live like her. But ultimately she didn’t; she’d found Lifis and became embroiled in the cause to erase this timeline and create a new one, with the hope Nina had never been afforded for most of her life.

“...I will, Nina. I will tell him, I promise.”

Aega’s voice snapped the Ninetales out of her thoughts. The Celebi’s face seemed to twinge with sympathy; perhaps she’d caught the sadness shoring up onto Nina.

She twitched in discomfort at that, tails fluffing; she didn’t enjoy the thought of being scrutinised by a Legend like Aega.

A change of subject was in order, and the recent thoughts of Robin did remind Nina that she didn’t have all the facts regarding the human’s side of things. Maybe Aega could help her fill in the gaps.

“How did you find Robin?” she asked.

“Robin? Oh, she stumbled into here not long after she appeared in this world about a year or so ago,” Aega replied. “She had gotten in a few scrapes with the ferals in here, and she was worse for wear. Lifis was by her side, and brought her to me to heal her wounds.”

A smile then grew on Aega’s face. “I still remember the first words she greeted me with when she saw me. ‘Wh-What are you…? Some kind of…onion fairy?

Nina stifled a guffaw. That sounded like something Robin would say, alright. Aega in turn let out a titter at the memory.

“Lifis became offended, of course. ‘This onion fairy just saved your life, you know!’” The Celebi mimicked Lifis’s deeper voice, which just so happened to be in earshot of said Grovyle. He turned around and looked at her with puzzlement.

“Are you talking about when we found Robin?” he asked. Said human was just beside him, by the set of stairs in front of them, and .

“Yes! But we are firm friends now, are we not?” Aega gazed sweetly at Robin, who squirmed and looked away. Nina spotted a hint of red on the human’s cheeks.

“Yeah…At least you’re pretty casual for a Legendary,” Robin muttered. “If you’d been stuck up, I don’t think I’d have gotten far here.”

“Oh, so humans like a bit of casual behaviour from a Legend, mmmm?” A smirk crossed Aega’s face. “Maybe the other Legends could take notes instead of demanding respect all the time.”

“...Let’s not dwell on business like that.” Lifis began to ascend the stairs. “Let’s just keep going.”

The others got the message and ascended the stairs to the next floor. A Jumpluff awaited them there, ambushing them with an Energy Ball Unfortunately, Robin was right in the line of fire, and she was thrown back from its force.

“Ack!” She clutched her side. “Oh, screw you!”

“I’ve got this.” Aega brought her hands above her head, before rocks lifted from the earth and she flung them at the Jumpluff. “Behave!”

Lifis leapt forward and slammed into the Jumpluff like a blur. Leaping out of the way, that left room for Nina to fire a Flamethrower at the wild ‘mon, who collapsed in front of them, singed and writhing from the pain. She spat some more embers on the feral for good measure, as the group began their search for the stairs.

“So, anyway,” Aega continued, picking up the conversation’s dropped baton. “I was not expecting a human, certainly not one who hadn’t become a Pokémon! But Pellehan was with me at the time, and he was quite excited by the advent of a human appearing before us. He said it was a sign that the solution to undoing time’s collapse was in our grasp, and immediately he began formulating plans involving you two.” She gestured to Lifis and Robin as she spoke the last part.

“Before long, he came up with the idea of you two travelling back in time to create a new state of the world, instead of trying to fix this one,” the Celebi went on. “It’s…a risky plan, admittedly. But Pellehan knew that we couldn’t continue like this forever, living in this darkness for countless more generations. Skathi confirmed it herself, that this world is coming apart at the seams anyhow.”

“But surely not everyone was fine with this fate?” Nina frowned at Aega’s words. “No one truly wants to die in the end, do they?”

“Oh, of course.” Aega grimly nodded. “When Pellehan’s planetary investigation team spoke to many Pokémon throughout the world, many of them were apprehensive. But nearly all of them agreed that something had to change about this perpetual darkness. They all would make that sacrifice for change…all while, Shuranabi would not.”

An angry frown then crossed Aega’s face, her fist shaking in anger.

“He would gladly hold the world hostage in this state if it meant he could live! He might give off a bravado of confidence, but he’s a coward through and through.”

“Damn right,” Nina growled, hackles raising in fury. “Can’t wait until we get back to the past and be rid of him.”

That response drew something of a questionable silence among the three of them. A Mismagius was in the distance, so Nina couldn’t focus on that, but after a takedown, she definitely noticed an awkwardness between her teammates.

“Yes…about that.” Aega’s wings fluttered with a new anxiety, as Nina’s ears pricked at her words.

Don’t tell me…Would that scum honestly try and…?!

“...Shuranabi’s crafty. And he has Primal Dialga by his side. If he knows of our plan to get back to the past - which might well be the case knowing him…”

Those words caused a look of horrified realisation to cross both Robin and Lifis’s faces, as they realised what the Celebi was getting at.

“...He might decide to do the same himself.” A dark frown crossed Lifis’s face. “...Shit, he would do that, wouldn’t he? Travelling to the past to foil our plans there…”

“...I don’t even want to think what he could cook up once he’s in the past.” Robin grimaced, with a flash of dismay at the possibility of what they were reckoning. “Damn it! Just when I thought he could be out of our hair!”

“And he’s a master manipulator too,” Nina murmured, a dark pit forming in her stomach. There were all manner of things he could do once in the past, but chief among them, a dark thought struck her.

He could well try to play on the Wigglytuff Guild’s feelings and turn them on us. No doubt they and the authorities will be hounding our scent every step of the way, but if he tries to weaponise and manipulate them…

A chill went down her spine.

Seems we might not be safe from him just yet, if he does take that leap.

An uncomfortable silence descended over the group, interspersed with a quick takedown of a Jumpluff and Mismagius pair. The thoughts of what Shuranabi could possibly do had killed the jubilant mood, and even Robin’s cheerful demeanour had faltered, with her throw of a blast seed far more forceful than normal.

It needed to be broken. And luckily, Nina happened to spot Aega looking at Lifis, a pensive look on the Celebi’s face.

The Ninetales caught her eye, and mouthed, “Go for it.”

Aega nodded and cleared her throat.

“By the way…Lifis.” Aega’s words drew the Grovyle’s attention. “There’s something I need to tell you. B-Before you go.”

Lifis’s eyes widened, as though remembering what he had promised on his own end.

“I have something to tell you too,” he said. “We’ll do it at the rest spot. You know the one.”

“Right. Onward we go.” Aega murmured. Her buzzing wings betrayed a jumpiness she felt in the moment, as observed by Nina.

But the Ninetales found herself gladdened by the exchange.

Good. At least their feelings won’t remain unsaid.

It took some more floors of combat with wild Pokémon and annoying traps - Robin had been spun around by a Spin Trap and had to be shouldered by Lifis for a while - but eventually the team reached the rest area around the Dungeon’s midpoint.

Lifis felt quite tense, his stomach pooling in anxiety as the team continued through the Dungeon. The occasional glance at Aega told him that she was just as nervous as he was from their promise to talk. The occasional words of encouragement from Robin helped the Grovyle, as did Nina’s to Aega’s. Not that it didn’t prevent the shaky tension from either side, but when they reached the midpoint, just before the ascent up a plateau within the forest itself…

The Grovyle felt ready to speak, and stepped forward to Aega as soon as they’d laid their bags down.

A waterfall frozen in time was their backdrop, its water stagnant as it ever was. Lifis and Aega stood opposite each other, the silence quickly proving uncomfortable as both sides pondered on their words. Robin and Nina stood off to the side, watching them.

“We can leave you two be,” the human volunteered. “If you two want some alone time.”

“No.” Lifis shook his head. “We don’t need that. Maybe I would’ve said before it would be a private moment, but…” He looked back at Aega. “It doesn’t matter too much now.”

He stood there, as Aega moved forward to him, pressing her fingers together.

“My dear Lifis…” she began. “I am sorry I have not been more upfront about my feelings for you.”

“Don’t worry about it,” Lifis said. “You still mean the world to me, Aega. And even when we go back to the past, you’ll still be there in my mind.”

“And mine too. I just…I just wish we had more time.” Aega’s lip began to quiver. “I knew this would happen, that we would part ways like this…”

She moved closer, as Lifis extended a hand gently for her. She held onto it tightly.

“I’m a deity of time! I’ve gotten used to seeing those close to me come and go over the years. But you…you’re different, Lifis. Y-You and Robin,” the Celebi croaked. “You two and Pellehan gave me hope for the first time in decades with a plan actually might work! I-I’ve wanted something, anything, to get out of these dark times. B-But…”

Aega stopped for a moment, collecting her spiralling emotions. Lifis kept silent, letting her speak her thoughts as his heart panged with concern for the Celebi.

“But…?” he asked, tilting his head.

“...I-I just wish I could be there…to be with you.” A tear fell down Aega’s cheek. “M-Maybe Skathi was wrong and you don’t need me as a failsafe! Maybe I can go with you to the past!”

“Aega…” Lifis gave her a sad look, as he put his other hand in hers. “We both know that’s not-”

“Wh-What if you win? Wh-What if you get the Time Gears? Wh-What if you do restore the past?!” Aega continued, all while becoming more torn up. “I-If you do and I just remain here, we won’t be able to…to…!”

Her tears flowed and dripped onto the dark grass. That Aega was quickly too overcome by her emotion to utter her words correctly was enough to make Lifis silently embrace her.

“I don’t want to leave you, Lifis!” Aega wailed, as her tears fell onto the Grovyle’s grassy scales. “I-I am sorry! I cannot be brave like you and Robin! I’m sorry, I’m sorry…!”

“Shhh shhh. It’s alright.” Lifis caressed her back, as he hugged her tight to comfort her. “To tell you the truth…I’m not brave either. And nor is Robin.”

Aega gave only a barrage of sniffles, but looked up at the Grovyle with tear-stained eyes, as if in shock at his words.

“But you, Aega? Staying back alone here in the big bad present, with Shuranabi and his Sableye hunting you down? That’s braver than I could ever hope to be.”

He hugged her closer, bringing a claw to gently caress against her cheek. It caught one of the Celebi’s tears streaming down her face.

“I don’t want to leave you either. But…this is no place to love someone. We have no future here in the present.” Lifis could feel his own breath hitching, his heart twisting with the same emotional pain the Celebi was wracked with. “If only there was another way…maybe an afterplace. You know, up in the stars with the Original One?”

“...S-Skathi did say.” Aega swallowed, attempting to speak through her tears. “Th-That after this is all over, that the Original One might p-permit our souls to be together. F-For all we’re doing for the world.”

“Skathi said that?” Lifis blinked in surprise. “...I guess that’s good news. But one way or another…we’ll see each other again.”

The Grovyle took a deep breath, before a determined look crossed his face.

“I’ll even vow it right here and now,” he insisted. “This won’t be the last time we see each other.”

Aega looked up at him, eyes wide with surprise, before she hugged him tighter.

“...Please be safe,” she said, with a hint of pleading. “I-If you and Robin don’t save the world, I’ll time travel to the past and smite you myself.”

Lifis couldn’t help but chuckle at that remark. She was getting some of her old self back, at least.

“We’ll do our best. I can’t promise we won’t get roughed up.” A sad smile crossed his face. “But…by hook or by crook, we’ll get the Time Gears and fix the past. I can promise you that much. And then after, when we all disappear…maybe we’ll be reunited again.”

“Lifis…oh, my dear Lifis.” Aega drew back her hug, and looked up at the Grovyle. Her tears had stopped flowing, and she was able to muster a serene smile again…

Along with a knowing glint in her eye. Lifis caught it, and curiously tilted his head at her.

“Aega? What are you-?”

Before he could react, she leaned in closely and…

Lifis felt her lips on his cheek.

He stiffened in an instant.

D-Did she just…?!

The shy yet knowing and giddy look upon her face indicated as such.

“We might not get another chance,” was her simple reply. “Might as well do it now.”

Might as well do it now.

Lifis felt a resonance with those words. Nina’s words from Dark Ice Mountain came back to him, and he found himself compelled to return the favour.

He leaned in…and kissed her back.

He happened to hear a squee from behind him, from a certain human he knew well. He didn’t turn back to look at his audience; all that mattered was the love in front of him.

Aega felt soft. But she was always light, given her small stature. There was always a feeling when he got close to her and made remarks of fondness that he was treading upon sacred ground. As though it were out of reach for a common ‘mon like him.

But if she was alright with it, and if the Voice of Life gave her blessing…then Lifis would take that chance.

He wanted to remain with her for a bit longer, to bask in the glory of what they’d gotten off their chest. Alas, a look to the barren trees all around him reminded Lifis of something he’d said earlier.

This is no place to make a future.

Maybe in another time, they would have a land of bounty to revel in. But for now, there were timelines to correct and erase.

Lifis turned around from Aega, back to Robin and Nina. The former had a giddy look on her face, and a warm smile graced Nina’s muzzle.

That’s my partner!” Robin held out her hand and clapped it against her partner’s claws. “You two are cute together, really. Don’t bother hiding it.”

“Congratulations for letting your feelings known,” Nina said, tails swishing behind her happily. “May we head to the past with no regrets.”

“None at all.” Lifis returned the smile. After getting those words off his chest, suddenly it was like the burdens had been lifted from his shoulders.

And judging by the lack of anxiety in Aega’s flight and her smiling face, it seemed she shared that freedom of burden as well.

“Come on, let’s go.” Aega buzzed ahead of the group. “The past will not mend itself. Not much longer now till we reach the Passage of Time.”

And so the four continued forward, deeper into the Dusk Forest.

All of them had their heads held high and burdens free.

Right then and there, it felt as if there was nothing that could take that moment away from them.

Aega retelling Robins first words was really cute. of COURSE thats what Robin said to a Celebi.

She stroked her ear.

Wh-What? The Ninetales froze at the gesture

Robin just casually reaching over and petting Ninas ear like shes a dog and Nina freezing up at it. how many years has it been? all that dont touch me energy and this human just... does it without thinking. and nobody makes a big deal out of it. Robin is just like she doesnt even realize what she did too! LOL

Robin, Lifis and Aega were living proof that she could've taken a different approach. None of them were happy - how could anyone be happy in this hellscape? - but at least they had a partnership, links beyond that, and motivation that kept them going.

this is the turning point for Nina in this chapter ;c;; shes not just thinking these people are okay i guessssss anymore, shes actively reckoning with the fact that her entire worldview might have been wrong. she isolated herself because connection meant pain, and here are three people proving that connection is what kept them alive and fighting. this is basically is Nina admitting to herself something she couldnt have admitted two chapters ago which is nice development!

"I don't want to leave you, Lifis!" Aega wailed, as her tears fell onto the Grovyle's grassy scales. "I-I am sorry! I cannot be brave like you and Robin! I'm sorry, I'm sorry…!"

"Shhh shhh. It's alright." Lifis caressed her back, as he hugged her tight to comfort her. "To tell you the truth…I'm not brave either. And nor is Robin."

the confession scene it cute, but im split on this one. Lifis telling her im not brave either is the answer this scene needed and it echoes Ninas whole thing about strength being a performance. the setup across multiple chapters of Nina pushing both of them to say the words before its too late gives it weight. and switching to Lifis's POV for the first time is a nice choice that lets us feel his side of the goodbye instead of just watching from the outside

but the scene goes softer than i expected for characters. Aegas dialogue gets repetitive in the middle stretch someone, cycling through "what if you win, what if you get the Time Gears, what if you restore the past" reads like shes stalling, you might be able to cut some repeating ideas and keep the meat

"I-If you and Robin don't save the world, I'll time travel to the past and smite you myself."

this is where Aega sounds like herself again instead of just being sad. its funny and cute and you can feel her pulling herself back together through it

He happened to hear a squee from behind him, from a certain human he knew well.

Robin squeeing in the background during the kiss is such cuteee. shes been pushing for this the entire fic and shes not even trying to be subtle about enjoying the payoff

All of them had their heads held high and burdens free.

Right then and there, it felt as if there was nothing that could take that moment away from them.

the ending though is the kind of line that only exists to make the reader dread whats coming next. in a fic where weve already established that Shuranabi overheard their plans and might follow them to the past, ending on this much peace is basically a neon sign saying enjoy it while it lasts. and knowing the Explorers timeline... yeah.

this chapter is doing good transition work, getting everyone from point A to point B emotionally before the past and it mostly carries its weight. the dungeon banter keeps it moving and the Lifis/Aega scene pays off threads that have been running since chapter 9. i just think the confession itself could be tightened in the middle to let the strongest beats (the smite threat, the kiss, Robin squeeing) come through cleaner. overall really good stuff! :D

Chapter 11

It had been her first time laying eyes on Primal Dialga, and it was a meeting that would stay in her memory forever.
Yeah... I can imagine seeing a raging god smite your entire party with one attack will do that to you :sadwott:

Yet still, the Ninetales found herself more winded than normal through that attack. Something about Primal Dialga’s presence was crushing, as though it was physically weighing her down and partly muffling her senses.
Oh, that's Pressure! I've always wondered how that ability actually works, and I love how it's written here

And before the Ninetales could muster a reply, she suddenly found herself being lifted up by Robin. Nina felt sharp, stabbing pains in her side as she did and looked on in astonishment as the human suddenly broke into a dash!
Don't get between a human and her fox!

Even if it meant disturbing the fabric of time to do so.
Oh... that's how Lifis and Robin get separated during the intro of the Explorers games, isn't it?

Chapter 12

Nina turned her head to the human, who held out the gem for the group to see. It had cracked in a few places, and shards fell out, some landing on the ground next to Robin’s boot.
No more chances to flee for the four of them then.

“That’s…true, I guess,” Robin said, smiling slightly. In return, she brought her hand to Nina’s head and…stroked her ear.
:veelove:

“Hee hee hee! They can be so silly sometimes.” Aega was still giggling at their antics, as she buzzed her wings after the two. “Say, if Lifis is the dad and Robin the kid, does that make me the mom?”
If that's the case, what does that make Nina? The shipper and me wants to say she's the girlfriend :mewlulz:

“Yes! But we are firm friends now, are we not?” Aega gazed sweetly at Robin, who squirmed and looked away. Nina spotted a hint of red on the human’s cheeks.
Is that blush from embarrassment, or from something else? 🤔

Where did the other teams go? Were they all struck down by Shuranabi? Or were Lifis and Robin the only ones to actually agree with the plan?

He leaned in…and kissed her back.
:letsgorb:

Really enjoyed this last couple of chapters since my last review, and I'm looking forward to the next one! Kudos 💙

Chapter 13
Final Recollections

The last few floors of Dusk Forest went by smoothly. A bit too smoothly, the more Nina thought it over.

The wild Pokémon didn’t provide too great of a challenge, and once Aega announced the final floor before the plateau, and even the fact that one of their team was relegated to flinging blast seeds, iron thorns and casting wands didn’t make Robin baulk in the least. The human still enthusiastically flung items with gusto and precision at her enemies, just as willing as the rest of them to get involved in scrapes.

There were some ferals like Leafeon and Hippowdon, and even a few domineering huge ‘mons like Rhydon, Aggron and even a Steelix to square off against. These were tougher than what had come before, craftiness being replaced by powerful brute force, but the four were able to overcome the challenges before them. Casts from Robin’s wands, slashes from Lifis’s Leaf Blades and subsequent evasion with his agility, Nina’s Flamethrower and Will-O-Wisp dousing the enemies in fervent fire, and the angelic rings of Aega’s Heal Bell proved a welcome balm to any grievous hits they might have taken.

Even amidst all that, Nina still expected it would all go wrong. Perhaps they’d round the corner and see the stairs, but it would turn out to be at the end of a Monster House - every Dungeon’s delver’s great fear.

They did round a corner, and Robin exclaimed with delight at the sight of what they appeared before them.

“The stairs! Just go up these and the past is ours!” She whooped with joy, before bounding forward. Even Lifis, who would normally have cautioned her, threw it to the wind and dashed forward.

Aega’s wings buzzed and she flew after the two of them. Only Nina remained cautious, looking around her.

Is…this it? Is there truly no trap waiting at the end for us?

The Ninetales looked around to try and confirm that lingering nagging doubt, but there really wasn’t anything. All that lay off to the side was a lone pecha berry. No feral hiding in the shadows waiting to pounce, nor scores of them hiding and ready to drop in.

No strange sounds. No odd scents. And she couldn’t sense any presence other than their own.

There was nothing.

The path forward was clear.

…Years of endless hope being crushed has whittled any of it out of my heart, the Ninetales mused to herself, shaking her head. I should be happy like Robin and Lifis are right now. Our hope’s right at the crest of these stairs.

I might…finally be free from this hell of a world.

She swallowed her nerves. Many hopeful possibilities lay beyond. She couldn’t mire herself in her pessimism that all would go wrong now.

She had to believe.

And so…Nina ascended the stairs.

The plateau at the end of Dusk Forest was eerily silent. In a more bountiful time, there’d surely be a nice breeze blowing and the air would smell of fresh pines and airy bark. Alas, that was not the case in these darkened times, where the forest air remained as still and stagnant as ever.

But Robin, Lifis and Nina all had the same thought as they crested the final steps to the plateau’s peak.

It won’t be long now.

They stepped out from the Mystery Dungeon into open air, and up the steps to where the Passage of Time was supposed to be. A wide open plateau greeted them in front of a big rock face, with the forest’s reach extending into here. Floating rocks lay all around, as they did in most of the world at present.

However, one sight caught Nina’s eye. In front of the rock face lay a sparking ball of blue energy, and at the rocks behind it, a pattern appeared burned in, almost resembling a doorway. It was surprisingly mundane she felt – no altar or anything dedicated to it.

“So that’s the Passage of Time, is it?” Nina stared at the ball of energy, slightly mesmerised by its surprising mundanity. “Do we…need to do anything?”

“...No, you need not. Setting up the Passage of Time is my responsibility, and only I and Primal Dialga can do it,” Aega said, flying up and hovered in front of it.

“It has not been fully set up, alas,” she went on. “I was in the midst of preparing it for Lifis and Robin when that shadow nearly took me.” A light shiver came over her, as if in memory of that moment.

“...A right fuss we went through to get you back, alright.” Robin shook her head. “But oh well. Here we are now.”

“We’ll protect you while you set it up, Aega.” Lifis folded his arms. “No one will be taking you away while we’re here.”

A broad smile crossed Aega’s face at the Grovyle’s words.

“Thank you, my dear Lifis,” she said, before holding out her hands. “Please bear with me. This may take some time.”

Around Aega, Nina, Robin and Lifis formed a circle, watching around for any enemies emerging. This was the most vital part of the plan, opening access to the past that only Aega and Primal Dialga had. But once they were through, and landed back to before time’s collapse, they would have the hard part out of the way.

That thought went through Nina’s head, and her tails swished slightly. That wasn’t to say they could rest easy once they were through: there was still the inevitable hurdle of becoming outlaws once they started stealing Time Gears. If they somehow made any friends before them, they’d surely alienate them by then.

And most of all, making an enemy of the Wigglytuff Guild…

Something about that last part stirred a pit of unease within her. Nina knew that it was silly when she’d already turned from the Guild once before. After killing Team AWD, and knowing full well the Guild would not take kindly to brutal acts of murder, she’d forged her own path and never looked back.

Or at least…that’s how she would’ve wanted it. But memories had their own way of haunting her, and the thoughts of who she’d left behind made her heart twist in despair on a good few occasions.

Most of the folks in the Guild had been her companions at one point, after time had shuddered to a halt. And even in all the times she had failed to pluck up courage, they never wished her ill at all. She had apologised for this early in her Guild career, and the Guildmaster seemed to take humour from it.

“Oh, worry not, young Nina.” Nina recalled Makena kneeling to her in reassurance. “You would hardly be the first who feared the barrier of entry. But you’re among us now. That’s what matters.”

Alas, that was after calamity had befallen the land. And her dreams prior to joining the Guild - joining a team, going on adventures, earning a name for herself - felt hollow in a dark world, and even more so when Sam and Raijin were slain.

It did leave her wondering what could’ve been. What would it have been like to join the Guild before then? What if she had managed to quell her fears, march in and request membership sooner? Would that have changed her life?

No. Nina shook her head. Time would have collapsed either way. We would have to have known what the cause behind it was, and it wasn’t the Time Gears being stolen. Maybe Wischard could’ve known…but even that Torkoal couldn’t recall anything.

Nina’s paws clenched, as she gripped the dark earth beneath her.

No matter what I did back then… my life would have gone down the same path it would today.

“Hey…Nina? I have a question.”

The Ninetales turned her head and saw Robin staring at her quizzically. Behind the trio, Aega’s outstretched hand created lights within the rocks, making them reverberate with a gentle hum, but the Passage of Time didn’t look to have taken shape yet. Lifis stood next to the Celebi, eyes narrowed and peering for any attackers.

“Yes, Robin?” Nina quirked her head. The human looked at her, pondering something.

“Do you think there’s a chance we’ll meet your past self?” Robin asked.

Nina blinked. That wasn’t something she had considered in the past… well, not since Robin and Lifis first raised the idea of travelling back in time.

“My past self? Well…I suppose that could happen,” the Ninetales mused. “That said, it’s not something we should actively hunt for. We’ll have more important business to attend to, and our story’s going to sound unbelievable to anyone who asks.”

“I was just raising a possibility.” Robin shrugged. “I was just wondering how that would go since… Y’know, I don’t think you ever told us what you used to be like.”

The human walked over to Nina and kneeled down beside her.

“You’ve…been through a lot in your life, I can tell. But what were you like before time broke down?”

Nina dragged a paw along the ground, considering her words. Robin looked full of expectation, but the Ninetales didn’t know how to tell her story in a way that would fulfill it. The simple truth was…

“...I’m not proud of my past self.”

The words were honest. Blunt. Two things her past self never were.

“Not proud?” Robin peered at her, concern across her face. “Was it your weakness?”

“Yes.” Nina nodded. “I lived in Treasure Town before it all went down, but even before then, I’d had tragedy in my life. My parents were a pair of travelling Ninetales who roved the land, and I was their first-hatched kit.”

Those happy days were alas a fleeting memory by this point. And one memory she did have of them was one she did not want to relive.

“But one day we were caught in a bad landslide, and my parents put me first, telling me to flee and get away. I didn’t look back, and after I arrived in Treasure Town, I received word that they didn’t survive.”

Her tails drooped at the heartbreaking memories. Even now, it was still uncomfortable dredging up the memories of how she’d bawled for days after Team Charm broke the news of her parents’ deaths to her.

“You said that before, but…geez.” Robin murmured, her hand on her chest. “I’m so sorry, Nina.”

“I had people in town to comfort me, and I helped them where I could.” Nina’s gaze was on the blackened ground, not meeting Robin’s. “But I always felt hollow after that day. I lived as a vagabond in Sharpedo Bluff, and there were many days where I woke up and remembered. …And then I’d start crying again.”

Nina found herself shuddering, partly in disgust, partly in shame, as she stared off into the distance, not wanting to meet Robin’s gaze.

“I…I just wanted someone else there. There was always someone missing, someone who I could say was truly dear to me. The comfort of someone else…I wanted that more than anything.”

She took a shaky breath, swallowing her growing emotion as her tails lashed agitatedly.

“And I knew a place where I could find it,” Nina said. “The Wigglytuff Guild. Many explorers made their keep there, but many also had companions they could rely on. Friends, comrades, even lovers in some cases. I wanted that companionship. I wanted to be strong too. And so I…I tried to enter.”

“Tried to?” Robin frowned. “What happened? They wouldn’t let you in?”

Nina turned away again, feeling her face heat up and disgust curdling in her stomach. It was almost embarrassing to admit the next part.

I struggled to let myself in,” she said. “I was always scared by a million different things - whether I would be successful, whether they would accept me, whether I would be strong enough, whether I would fall at the first feral who eyed me up…”

Nina let out a growl just thinking about it all.

“Gods, it always makes me feel pathetic thinking back to those times.” She let out a mirthless laugh. “Such a weak little kit, never able to take that leap of faith. Every time I just…turned and ran! I tried day after day, but I couldn’t do it!”

Nina felt the gentle caress of Robin’s hand on her back. A gesture of comfort, and briefly turning to her, the human’s look had softened.

“Nerves, huh? We’ve all been there,” she insisted. “Don’t beat yourself up over it.”

But Nina couldn’t quite bring herself to listen to that last part. Her mind kept playing out her failures over and over again – all the times she’d baulked in front of the Guild, all the times she could’ve swallowed her nerves but ultimately didn’t, and all the times she’d been spooked by the yelling from within the Guild’s grate…

“Word got around town about that. About how I was a coward who’d make a Whismur look brave. Some comforted me. Some tried to encourage me that I’d get there one day. Others…took advantage of it.”

And that last answer brought back a memory that for years, she wished would’ve faded away.

Another failed attempt, and Nina found herself hurtling down the steps to get to the beach. Unfortunately her vision was clouded by tears, and she didn’t see who was in front of her until she collided with him.

“Oof! Hey!” a gruff voice cried. “Watch where you’re going, shrimp!”

Nina raised her head, and as she did, she got hit with the most
ghastly of odours. It was like mouldy cheese, poison gas and burning rubber had been rolled into one horrific stench. A pit of terror formed within her - not because of the smell, but because of who it belonged to.

A large Skuntank, looming over her pitiful form and glaring at her.

“M-Mr Furfant!” Nina stammered. “I-I’m sorry, I-I didn’t mean to-!”

She tried to finish her apology, but even speaking was near impossible when that scent was attacking her from all angles. Her eyes were watering even more, and she just wanted for him to get out of her way.

“No one knocks into me like that, you yippy little runt,” Furfant growled. He stepped forward, not intending to let her leave.

“I-It was an accident…” Nina squirmed back in fear at the Skuntank.

“An accident, huh?” Furfant huffed. “Well, every accident needs a little
compensation. And that right there…”

The Skuntank glanced at Nina’s Relic Fragment, before licking his lips.

“That’ll be enough just there, little princess.”

Nina squealed as the Skuntank swiped at her, just barely missing the Fragment hanging from her neck.

“No! Not my Relic Fragment! Anything but that!” Nina wailed. “I-I have money! Please! Take that instead!”

Those words made Furfant pause for thought. The Vulpix begged that would be enough.

I can’t lose my Relic Fragment! That was my parents’ last memento to me…

“Money, huh?”

Furfant stamped a paw forward, fluffing his fur and making himself look as big as possible. Nina squeaked in alarm.

“Then pay up,” he snarled. “Otherwise I’ll make you
regret it.”

“Th-There!” Nina fished into her satchel and threw some Poké at him. “Just leave me alone!”

“...Fine then, kiddo. You’ve paid.” The Skuntank stepped aside. “But get in my way again and I’ll make you
hurt.”

That threat was enough to make Nina break into a dash. Far away from him and into town, past surprised townsfolk as she beelined straight for the river to wash off the secondhand stench.

She cried as she cleaned herself up, and like so many other times before then, she cried herself to sleep in her bed in the bluff.

It stood in her memory as a stark example of her weakness back then. And knowing that Furfant had been affiliated with those two thieves who stole her Relic Fragment…

He probably told them. If we never had that encounter, I probably would’ve still had it…!

“Geez, really?” Robin murmured, grimacing at the tale Nina told. “Looks like the past ain’t full of angels either.”

“Gods, it was humiliating, being so fickle.” Nina let out a sniffle as she spoke. “So weak. So pathetic and everyone knowing about it. I hated it. I hated it all so much…!”

Nina stamped a paw down, as her breath hitched and tears began to fall from her eyes.

“By the time I evolved, I had the strength I wanted…” she murmured. “But I had lost everything else I held dear. No partners, no one by my side…just me alone in this dark world.”

All alone, for all those decades…and yet when Robin arrived in this world, she had allies immediately in Lifis and Aega. Why couldn’t she have had that luck? She’d missed the comfort of allies so much, and only now was she experiencing it again.

“...I envy you, Robin,” Nina choked out, tears continuing their descent down her muzzle. “Y-You having a partner in Lifis, s-someone who’s guided you this whole time…I never had that. I wanted someone like that. A partner who would lift me up and give me the courage to fulfill my dreams…If only someone like that could’ve been there for me back then, then maybe things would be different! I might’ve actually…!”

“N-Nina…”

Robin looked desperate to comfort her, as she got down on her hunkers and gave the fox a look of pity.

“...You don’t know that things will be the same after we’re done. We’re going back and saving the world from an apocalypse,” she insisted. “If time never collapsed, maybe your past self would’ve been able to live the life you always wanted to lead!”

The human then brought Nina in for an embrace for the second time. Just like before, the Ninetales broke down in full tears, bawling as she leaned into Robin’s thin form. The human held her tight, her cloak soaking up Nina’s tears and acting like a comforting blanket in spite of its thinness.

It was that life her past self might be able to lead. A life that her present self would never get to experience. A life she would’ve loved nothing more than to have instead of the three hundred years of hell she got instead.

But something about Robin felt comforting to embrace in that moment, to have someone listen to her anguished ramblings. The feel of Robin’s hand stroking her head fur was one she would have rejected before, yet something about it this time brought a new feeling of closeness between them. Robin was a friend, and something about her just kept drawing the Ninetales’ attention. She was snarky and had little filter even in front of Aega and Skathi, yet even still she knew how to give comfort when it was most needed.

…She’s a friend. No doubt about that. Even if we’re destined to disappear…I’ll cherish this companionship.

Nina could have sworn Lifis was saying something to Aega. But she had tuned it out, just leaning into the human’s embrace and listening to her sweet “There, there”s that left her mouth.

“Everything’s gonna be alright, Nina. I promise.”

Robin broke off the hug, but instead placed her hands on the Ninetales’ cheeks.

“I swear, we’ll make a better life for your past self, even if we never do meet her. But you know what? …Maybe we can make a little detour to make our paths cross.”

Nina was too overwhelmed to reply, but only nodded her head. It felt like a ridiculous circumstance of chance, what Robin was saying.

But…not impossible. Maybe we can…and if we succeed, she won’t have to see the horrors of her future. Of all I’ve had to live through these three hundred years…

Robin rose back to her feet, and returned to her watch. Nina mumbled a “Thanks,” to her, as she sniffled and wiped the remaining tears from her eyes.

“Nearly finished.”

Nina’s ears flicked as Aega spoke, which drew her attention to a developing portal behind her, Robin and Lifis. It was definitely taking shape now, the glowing archways forming as if a doorway would appear from within the rock face before them.

“Just a little more, and then it’ll be open–”

Aega was cut off by a yell from Nina.

“Robin, look out!”

The Ninetales leapt in front of Robin, who barely had time to react before a Shadow Ball collided with the Ninetales and threw her back into the human.

“Agh!” Luckily Robin kept upright. “You alright, Nina?” She reached down to right the fox’s stance, but Nina was already getting to her feet.

She let out a growl, knowing full well just who would’ve thrown such a thing.

Of course you had to come here. Always thinking of everything, aren’t you?

“It would seem you four remain a thorn in my side as ever.”

Before them, a dark portal appeared in the ground, and from it, Shuranabi emerged.

“Look who it is,” Lifis spat. “...Figures we’d have to deal with you one last time.”
