Chapter 18: A Crystal Catastrophe

18. A Crystal Catastrophe
Blue ran. There wasn't much else he could do.
He barely acknowledged the torn-up forest he trundled along. The broken branches and twigs snapped under his weight. The forest around them was destroyed. The trees, some splintered from the trunk upwards, some with large holes inside but miraculously still standing, and some that had been uprooted and thrown onto their side, scattered the area. He ran past a deep trench, one of the many newly made.
He could hear him now. The stomps of his opponent were getting louder. Had it already been five minutes?
Thinking fast he shot a Grass Knot in the direction of the noise as he ran, feeling the energy travel towards its target. The Bidoof knew from experience it wouldn't slow him down much, but every little bit helped.
He looked around. His target should have been close by. Where had he hidden it this time? Could it have been in the trees? No, Blue had to be able to reach it. That was one of the rules.
The loud snaps of his opponents restraints breaking motivated Blue to speed up. He kept looking as he went, until he saw it. His bandana tied around a light blue bone. The flag. It was in an obvious place this time, sticking out of the ground, standing in front of one of the few unharmed trees that still remained.
Blue didn't hesitate, running straight at his prize. The blue blur could be on him in seconds. He was almost there, almost-
The blur blew past him, knocking the Bidoof on his side. When he looked up he saw Rio with the makeshift flag, twirling it. Great. Just perfect.
"Better," Rio said. "Your Grass Knot's really-"
Blue didn't wait for him to finish. He spat a Water Gun at the talkative dog, who simply sidestepped it. It splattered against the tree, some spare drops sprinkling on Rio's back. He turned to the attack, nodding.
"That's gotten better too," he said.
Blue just charged at Rio, aiming a Headbutt right at Rio's gut. In response, Rio simply stuck the flag into the ground and extended it, shooting into the sky and letting Blue crash into the bone shaft. It wobbled a bit, but still stood.
"Your reactions are better too!" Rio shouted from above. "You do learn fast!"
His frustration gave Blue a new idea. He focused on his stomach for a bit, and focused the energy there into his teeth. They suddenly got longer, harder, sharper, and the black sheen that coated them stood out against the green and brown of the destroyed forest.
He chomped the Bone Rush in half with his Bite, snapping the shaft in two. It felt like chewing wood, but tasted like dirt. He would have spat it out, but there were more pressing issues. The tall part of the bone started to fall to the left, and Rio with it.
The rest of the bone retracted as Rio fell. Blue kept his eyes on the Riolu, who dashed away as soon as his paws touched dirt. He sent another Grass Knot his way, but he jumped out of the way just as it reached him. The grass had no target to trip.
"You're getting faster!" Rio said, standing just out of reach. "Just not fast enough. Wanna prove me wrong?"
Blue knew what the Riolu wanted him to do. They'd been trying for a week now, all that was left to do was to use it on a moving target. Still, Blue hesitated. He'd seen the move used and the results weren't pretty. Especially on someone so light. What if he seriously hurt him?
"You won't hit me!" Rio promised, grinning wildly. "Come on!"
That wasn't unfounded. The most he could do to Rio was a Grass Knot, but after the first time he always seemed to see it coming. It was infuriating! So that Super Tackle, as Rio called it, was worth a shot.
Blue stood on his back legs, and crossed his front. The stone and bracelet flashed brightly as the Bidoof did the dance before he lost what little balance he now had. Blue landed back on all fours as he felt the energy of the stone flow into his body. Rays of light sprouted from Blue's body as he stared ahead at his opponent. Rio hadn't moved yet. He just stood there. Grinning. Was he planning on taking this? He couldn't! No one could!
But he already started the move. Blue couldn't stop now, and he so badly wanted to. The Bidoof charged, the energy flowing through him feeling amazing, but the guilt of what was about to happen balanced the ecstasy.
Finally, Rio started to move, jumping to one side. Blue wasn't sure he'd make it, but he didn't have too.
The pink crystal that popped out of the ground took care of that.
Blue crashed into the large piece of rock that sprouted out of nowhere, cracking its surface. The Bidoof bounced off the hard rock and flew back into the small rut he made while charging. He groaned in pain, reaching for his head. Unfortunately his stubby legs were too short to actually cradle his head effectively, so it was closer to an agony inflicted flailing.
"Holy shit!" he heard Rio say. "Are you alright?"
Blue couldn't respond. He was too busy writing in agony. The crunch of his broken snout was still ringing in his ears. The Bidoof had squeezed his eyes shut out of reflex, so he couldn't see Rio run up and pop an extra sitrus berry in his mouth. It helped with the pain, and he opened his eyes to see the Riolu crouched over him. He looked worried for once. Or maybe that was the concussion.
"Hey!" he continued. "Blue? Speak to me!"
'What happened?' was what the Bidoof tried to say, but all that came out was "Whah happun?"
"...Let's get you to a healer…"
Blue didn't try to fight as Rio picked him up and carried him to town. It gave him time to take in the now familiar sights of the base. The thick trees that hadn't been blown off their roots yet, the treehouse itself, the clearing, the other massive pink crystals, the fire pit where they cooked dinner...
Wait what?
Rio slowed down at the sight. More of the crystals littered the area. Some were as small as Blue's foot, and some were bigger than Scales, who towered over the rest of the team. What was going on? Where had these things come from?
And why did Blue feel like he'd seen them before?
It was no use, his head was still ringing too loudly to remember. Rio didn't slow down for long as they walked towards town. All Blue could really do was watch these new additions to the area, and contemplate how that move went wrong. When Rio did it he punched through metal and stone like it was nothing, without a scratch! He cracked a crystal and almost broke his face. For the millionth time he asked why he was so worthless.
"Blue," Rio said, bringing him out of his slump. "what the hell is going on?"
They were in town now, and so were the crystals. The paved stone path was torn apart by the jutting rocks. Pokemon gathered around the large ones, just staring at the new decorations that littered the town. They walked past one with blood dripping down from the top. A bleeding Vulpix cub cried as its Ninetails mother did her best to comfort her.
They eventually reached the tower, which had not escaped the rest of the town's sudden skewering. When Blue's eyes wandered to look up, he noted that two crystals even went up to the second floor. The murmurs of the explorers were murder on his head, but they didn't stay there for too long. Rio carried Blue up to the third floor, the medical bay. Luckily, it was empty except for the Audino healer at the top.
"Hey Trucy," Blue heard Rio say. "How are you at broken snouts?"
…
Rio watched the Heal Pulse carefully. He saw the light pink energy gather around the Audino's paw and wash over Blue's entire body, surrounding him in a glowing oval ring. He watched his friend's snout realign. It was quite interesting to see, if not a little unsettling.
"How did you say he broke his snout again?" Trucy asked.
"Ran into one of those crystals," Rio responded, still entranced with the process. "Came out of nowhere."
"Hard enough to break bone? Did you have something to do with it?"
"Course not! The thing grew out right in front of me. Honestly it was almost funny."
"And why was he running at you?"
"Practice."
"What kind of practice?"
"The very fast kind."
The glowing ring faded as Blue's snout went back to its normal, non-crumpled state. Blue groaned and rolled off the comfy bed and onto his feet, obviously sore, but with nothing broken. Except the little pride he had left. Rio felt that shatter on the way over. Problems for later.
"Thank you," Blue said, looking at the healer.
"It was no problem," Trucy said. "Is your friend telling the truth? He didn't break your snout yourself, did he?"
"Hey!" Rio shouted. "I take pride in what I break!"
"Yeah," Blue groaned. "I did it to myself."
The Audino's ears flicked, apparently satisfied with the answer. "Alright… but be more careful."
Blue nodded with a grimace and walked towards the door. Rio followed close behind.
"Oh yeah," the Riolu said before leaving. "I haven't sneezed in a day. Cold's gone."
"I noticed," the Audino said. "Your body does sound better. I'll clear you for jobs."
"Great! Thanks!" With that, Rio closed the door behind him and walked with Blue back down. They were silent, and Rio could feel the shame washing over Blue. Maybe it was because he was so close to him, but it was a lot clearer than the confusion and suffering in the tower.
"Here," Rio said after a bit, holding out Blue's bandana. "Game's over, so…"
Blue sighed. "Do you mind tying it for me? I can't really do it myself."
Rio did so without complaint, tying the knot tight. Blue shook it around to test the Riolu's work, and nodded.
"I can't even do that alone," Blue continued. "How pathetic is that?"
"I mean you can't really help the lack of dexterity, can you?"
"Tell me the truth. Why did you really invite me on?"
"I told you already."
"Did you really? Because I'm-"
"OK let me stop you there," Rio held out one paw, stopping both Pokemon in their tracks. "Even if you were worthless, which you're not, we really didn't care."
"But-"
"You're trying to improve, and you have. A lot. Two moves in two weeks is honestly impressive. Plus, you can read human."
"I guess I can do that..."
"What did those books end up saying anyway?" he asked, trying to change the subject for his friends sake.
"Oh, well," Blue was silent for a bit before continuing. "We haven't been able to make out much honestly. In addition to being written in Unovan, there seems to be some sort of code, and we have no idea what the keyword is."
"So?"
"So it's much harder to read than plain Unovan. All we could get was that they were making something."
"Like?"
"No idea. It could have been anything…" Rio was relieved when his Aura shifted to curiosity, thinking about this newest mystery. Still, there was one more immediate mystery they should have been focusing on at the moment, as the scene downstairs reminded them both.
"No," they heard Guildmaster Jain say. "We don't know what made these crystals appear. We're looking into it now."
They walked out to see a crowd filling the hall. Pokemon of all shapes and sizes looked at the Medicham, some as big as an Aggron to as small as a Joltik. He could feel their Auras. Scared, confused, angry, and there was something else. He could feel something wrapping around the crowd, dampening the negative emotions. He recognized it as an Aura. Jain's Aura. Was it calming them? Could Aura do that? Could he do that?
"This is the second time my wares have been destroyed!" a very angry, and somehow familiar, Alakazam shouted. "And you never found the culprits the first time! How can I trust that!"
"You must have faith," Jain said. The field of Aura around the crowd became more obvious to Rio as she spoke. He could feel the effect get stronger. "I assure you, we will get to the bottom of this."
Jain's spreading Aura seemed to swallow the others completely now. The smoldering negative emotions felt weaker, farther away. It was as if she smothered the emotions, not gotten rid of them, just pushed them down.
The crowd dispersed after that, the effects of whatever the Guildmaster had just done still fresh. The Riolu wasn't sure whether to be impressed, or disgusted. Manipulation was manipulation, and something like that rubbed him the wrong way. It was %*&^# all over again.
He scratched at his neck as the thought popped in, and faded away just as quickly.
"Rio?"
Blue's voice snapped him out of his thoughts. He turned to look at his newly healed friend.
"What's up?"
"Are you alright?"
"Fine. Just... felt something."
Blue didn't have time to further press the Riolu, as their boss had just arrived. He watched Blue straighten as Jain walked over to them, arms behind her back.
"Ah, half of Team Disaster." she greeted. "Are you feeling better, Rio?"
"Cold's gone, if that's what you mean," Rio said. "We're going into the Dungeon soon."
"...You felt my little trick, didn't you?"
"I did."
"I could teach it to you, if you can manage a little more control." She squinted, looking down at the fluffy Riolu. "Actually, a lot more control. We don't need more damage to the town..."
"Thanks, but no thanks."
"Not a big fan, I see. I could teach you some other things. Well, if you can get your Aura-"
"I'll think about it." Rio said, cutting her off. "Come on Blue." He walked past her, and towards the door.
"Huh?" he heard Blue said, surprised. "Oh, ok. Goodbye Guildmaster!" He slowed down a bit to let the Bidoof catch up. Rio sighed as they got farther away from the building, making his relief known.
"What was that about?" Blue asked. "What did you feel? Why were you so snippy with the Guildmaster?"
"I could explain, but I want to talk about these," Rio said, pointing at one of the crystals sticking out of a cart that sold orbs. The shattered remains of the merchandise littered the cracked and crumbling ground, along with some newly made apples from an apple orb. Rio picked one up and took a bite. "Recognize em?" he mumbled through his chewing.
"The Sableye, right?"
They had both realized it. The pink of the gems were the same as his eyes, and they both remembered how that Pokemon got away. A hole opened up underneath him. Maybe it was a coincidence, maybe it wasn't. But there was somewhere else Rio had seen something like this.
"That Dungeon I found too," Rio continued, taking another bite. "There were a bunch of small ones in the wall."
Blue nodded, and Rio could feel his curious Aura flare up. It wasn't hard to tell what exactly he was thinking about.
"Could this be the message?" he said after a long pause. "The one Mr. Thesus told us about?"
"Didn't even think of that," Rio said, now eating the apple core. "Little rude, don't you think?"
"Mr. Thesus even said a Carbink came through the Dungeon! They're connected somehow!" Blue's excitement flared, only to be swallowed up by guilt. "Do you think we caused this somehow?"
"Maybe," Rio said, finishing his snack. He felt Blue's mood worsen, and scrambled to salvage it. "But that just means we gotta fix it."
"How?"
"As soon as Pana and Scales get back, we go and get our grades."
Blue ran. There wasn't much else he could do.
