She could feel the battle drawing near. But these precious few hours beforehand had to be spent somehow.
Her walk had continued on, taking her further into the residential districts. In spite of Destiny Village’s usual overcast climate, the landscape was not quite the same now that a great shadow had blotted out the sky. Regret welled up in Astrid’s chest, and she wasn’t sure why. Perhaps because she hadn’t explored the city enough in her spare time back before the siege?
That didn’t feel right, but… most of her emotions hadn’t lately. She lingered on such things—lingered on how her corruption had been strenuous to channel lately. But she kept walking. Step after step after step, until she had crossed most of the city.
About half a kilometer separated Astrid from the boundary where she finally stopped to rest. There was a junction in the road; one way lead towards the edge, another path lead back towards town in roundabout fashion, and a final path diverted towards an exotic park. Hedges and fountains rose above one another in a fixed pattern next to an expansive pond, where grass waved along the shoreline in the nonexistent wind. Thick spruce trees bordered the far end of the area, giving the area a faint sense of enclosure. Colorful cobblestone lit up the walkways. Astrid imagined such a place would look beautiful under clear skies and fair winds. It was the
perfect spot to have a picnic, or do something less violent than fight a cosmic overlord. A place to rest her aches away…
She took a hesitant step forward.
I can pretend it’s a clear day if I have to. I just need to find some peace before this battle, somehow. I…
She frowned. Even admitting it to herself felt like a jab in the gut.
I’m not healthy.
Maybe it was the pressure finally catching up with her. She’d thrown up the day prior, and that was not something she
ever did. Everything about her body felt out of whack, nevermind any miscellaneous aches. Had she really not been treating herself that well…?
"Astrid? Howdy! You feelin' restless too, huh?"
It was a thought for another day. A familiar voice called, causing Astrid’s heart to leap.
“Brisa!”
Perfect. Just the girl she’d wanted to find before the fight. Someone she could count on…
Astrid fell in by her side at once and instantly felt safer. “Hey there.”
