INTRODUCTION

Oh good! You're not dead. Dunno how you ended up here but you took quite the tumble from way high. Glad to have some company though! I've been stuck here a while after some... complications during my usual travels. I'm trying to find a way to escape from here, this... world between worlds. I found these emeras while perusing the place, and I think they might be the key to escaping. Maybe you could help out?

Ah... I haven't even introduced myself yet...

Name's Zevya! Humble traveller and friendly guide to the multiverse!
CAD-Zevya (Zoroark-Sig).png
As you can see, I'm a zoroark. You have no idea how glad I am to see another pokémon. I swear, I was going to start going conjuring some illusions for myself and by then I'd have gone crazy.

Wait... You mean to say you aren't a pokémon? Hm... Guess this place is more like a Mystery Dungeon than I thought.

Well regardless, you'll just have to get used to it for now. You should be back to your usual self once you get back to your homeworld. At least I think you should.

Anyway, come on, before those emeras shatter. They kinda do that if you leave them alone for a while...

ROLE LIST

Well that could've gone better... But at least everyone has an emera now, yeah? Looks like it's impossible to tell which is which while they're in your looplets, though. Lucky for us, I managed to get a good look at each one before everyone grabbed their emeras. Here's a full list and what they do:

Imp

Each night, starting from N1, choose a player: they die. If you kill yourself this way, a Minion becomes the Imp.
Looks like they each have a specific type and will only let us escape when the rest have been shattered but that's okay! We all picked the same types of emera, right?

Trapped in a mysterious realm of twisting roots, iridescent leaves, and tree branches, you find yourself alone with 12 other pokémon wearing a strange looplet that can fit a single emera. Wasting no time, as if compelled by a higher force, everyone rushes to grab an emera without knowing what each one does. It seems that these mysterious gems are the key to escaping, but it seems that not everyone has each others' best interest in mind as later, you find the strange zoroark, Zevya, with a broken arm and the emera in her looplet shattered.

RULES

Each of you will recieve a role PM from me. Within these PMs you will learn of your role and alignment (Good or Evil). If you are Good the aim of the game is to find and eliminate the Demon. If the Demon dies, good wins. If you are Evil, your aim is to destroy the town. When you control the majority of votes (50% or more), evil wins. This is an open setup, so you will know all possible roles in play.

The game is split into two phases: a day phase and a night phase each lasting 48 hours. During the day, you talk in this thread. Generally, the Good players share whatever they know and attempt to find out who is who. Most Good players will be telling the truth, but some have an incentive to lie. If you are Evil, you should definitely be lying! It is best to pick a Good character to pretend to be, spreading as much false information as possible.

During the night, players with an active ability, will be able to send me their action privately to kill, encumber, or gain some kind of information depending on their role.

Most of you will die. This is a good thing! Death is not the end here. Some players may even want to die, as they gain information when they do. If you are dead, you still participate in the game, you may still talk in this thread, and you still win or lose when your team wins or loses.

There is a lot of information in this game. However, some of it might be wrong. If you are drunk or poisoned, you have no ability, but I will pretend that you do. I am allowed to lie to you – any information that you get may be incorrect, but you will not know if you are drunk or poisoned. For example, if you are the Drunk, you drew a different character token out of the bag and only I know that you are actually the Drunk. Or, if the Poisoner poisons you, you may still wake at night to use your ability, but it won't work.

This can be a lot of information to take in at once, so to keep things simple, there are only three things you need to remember:
  1. You may say whatever you want at any time. This is a talking game but all conversation must be held in this thread. Only Evil players can discuss amongst themselves privately at night.
  2. Ask me any questions you need to. If you get confused, or don't understand how your character works, or don't understand how the character that you are pretending to be works, or if something happens at night that you don't understand, or you just need some strategy advice... whatever it is, please ask. I'm neutral, and my job is to help you understand the rules and have fun playing. Let me know when you have a question, and we can talk in private so that nobody knows what question you asked.
  3. Play nice. This is a game about deception and trickery, so please treat others with respect and consideration. Kill with grace, and die with dignity.
When voting a player, indicate that you are doing by putting "VOTE: PLAYER" in bold at the bottom of your post, otherwise it won't be counted. You can only vote for one player at a time and whoever has the most votes is executed. On a tie, neither player is executed.

If you die, you are still a major part of the game. You still talk, and you still close your eyes during the night time. Most importantly, you still win or lose with your team. In fact, the game is usually decided by the votes and opinions of the dead players. When you die, you lose your character ability, and you have only one vote (called a "ghost vote" for the rest of the game, so use it wisely.

It was difficult to tell the difference between day and night here. Only a heavy drowsiness that fell upon everyone signaled when it was time for sleep. It was peaceful. No birds chirped, no leaves rustled, only the growth of the trees (or single massive tree?) and the rhythmic thrums of the foliage's pulsating light could be heard. The moss that the wayward pokémon slept upon was so soft that it could've easily been mistaken for a feather down.

It almost made you want to stay there forever.

"FUCK!"

Almost.

The zoroark from before – Zevya – limped into view. She cradled her looplet-carrying arm, hissing and swearing beneath her breath. The injury was severe, the limb was clearly broken and dislocated in some way. The emera inside the looplet was gone: shattered and reduced to a fine dust.

"I lost 'em," she growled. She looked around the scattered group, a feral anger in her eyes. "Had to have been one of you, so fess up, or I'll make you! So who did it?"

No reply. That only served to deepen Zevya's foul mood. "These emeras are our one shot of escaping from here! You think it's funny? It should concern the rest of you, too. Help me look for whoever did this. No mercy to any accomplices either." Her intentions were clear; she was ready to return the favour on her would-be jailer with nothing but her one good arm on her side.

She hopped towards a clearing. Root-like branches split and formed railings and make-shift platforms, all surrounding Zevya like the numbers of a clock-face. "Gotta make it quick too," she hissed, pain catching up to her as adrenaline faded. "Unless they happen to hate me personally, I expect that any one of you are going to be next..."

Elgyem is shocked upon seeing Zevya's broken arm. It looks pretty bad... and the emera was gone. What did it feel like when one of those were destroyed? Probably nothing good.

Stunned.png
This might've been a little above her paygrade. Elgyem was expecting something a bit less, uh, violent. Something where it'd be kinda funny if she gave other pokemon headaches as was in her pokedex entry. But a broken arm was unambiguously pretty painful. Times like these, she kinda wishes she specialized in the Healing track instead of the Being an Annoying Bastard track when she was at Psychic School.

Worried.png
Not to mention that comment about how "any one of" them could be next...

[[I don't know how to metacomment on setup in-character since diagetically the setup seems to be random, so before I start playing Morgan here's some of the thoughts I have:

The role list we have is every role in the Blood on the Clocktower base game with no additions, omissions, or declared adaptational changes. Which is interesting, because there's a few roles that would probably need adaptational changes. There's a few standouts I've tentatively eliminated from my thinking:
STATUS MIRROR (Butler)

Each night, choose a player (not yourself): tomorrow, you may only vote if they are voting too.
Voting in BotC works differently than in forum mafia: At the end of the day, living players can nominate people to vote for, then everyone gets to vote on that nominee one at a time until once nobody else is nominated and the nominee with the most votes dies. One of the core downsides of Butler isn't just "you have to not vote if your target doesn't vote" which is meaningless, but also "you can only vote for the specific people your target did." Also, Butlers aren't allowed to self-confirm by failing to vote, if they illegally vote the GM has to count it and if you do that on purpose it's cheating, which would be a nightmare to administrate in an environment where the target can change their vote and unvote at any time in the day and the Butler can potentially not check the forum/sleep through day end. $20 says this one isn't actually in the 'real' pool of roles that were assigned.

ALL-KNOWING (Spy)

Each night, you see the Grimoire. You might register as good & as a Townsfolk or Outsider, even if dead.
For those who've never played it, the Grimoire is the physical BotC game's GM screen. You see everybody's role (plus every viable fakeclaim since you can avoid claiming anything in play) and all state-related tokens like poison, 'is the drunk', 'has used oneshot power', ect. Making a fake Grimoire would be annoying but very doable, the actual adaptational nightmare is just how communication itself works differently. As an in-person game, BotC has no scumchat. Evils know who one another are, but have no nighttalk and can only daytalk by physically, visibly separating from the group to whisper to one another. The perfect information is counterbalanced by a difficulty communicating it, plus the burden of actually having to memorize it all (and have your teammates do the same even if you initially convey it to them correctly) since meatspace has no chat logs you can check. In this setting— where the first thing the spy will do is cut/paste their DM into scumchat where eveyone will have irl days to invisibly discuss how to use it perfectly optimally— I think a Spy would just shatter the game balance over its knee. Skeptical this one could make it into the script too. Not that I won't be keeping an eye out for the scumteam managing to laser-target unclaimed/innocuous power roles, that's a spy scumtell that would make me revisit this assumption.

In a game of this size and where we're only playing once I'd also almost guarentee that a Scarlet Woman (Backup Imp, in Mafia terms) is in the setup. Otherwise any D1 kill could randomly hit the Imp and end the game even faster than our last Mafia. I'd also encourage everyone here who has only played Mafia to read the Poisoner page becase it could surprise you, it will scream "weird bastard role" to Mafia players but as someone whose BotC experience is a couple rookie games, I have seen it appear every single time. It's standard. Hell, I'd give it >50% odds that our scumteam is specifically Imp, Scarlet Woman, Poisoner. Imp, Scarlet Woman, Baron is second place. All other setups fall into "Doesn't have Scarlet Woman" or "Does have Spy" which would both really fuck with me.
]]

Morgan was, in fact, one of the ones who thought it was funny that Zevya's emera was broken. Not that she didn't feel a little bad about it, but at the same time...

"I believe we're reverse-engineering a social deduction game from first principles! How fun~"

There was some humour in it. And her frustration helped put Morgan in a good mood, too. Such was life as a Mismagius.

Hiiiiiiiiii! I’m Madeline. Nice to meet you all!

Anyway, I’m not really here to kill anyone. This weird little ghost is telling me that’s almost unheard of.

Anyway, don’t really worry about dying. It’s kind of weird, but you get used to the whole being dead thing. So how are all of you doing?
Clearly, she was brought here as a punishment for failing to internalize The Encyclopedia of Species since she couldn't recognize anyone here other than the Noivern, and that her woman next to her might be a Shuppet.

"Hiiiiiiiiii, Madeline! A pleasure. The name's Morgan. I'm having a downright swell time here in the violence woods so far~"

(So, Madeline was a postmortem ghost of some kind? Funny. She was pretty sure that Shuppets were vessel-possessive. How sad, another blow to her species identification skills.)

"I don't really see any littler ghosts here, though..."

“Oooh! Hello Mr. Ratty Rat! First time being a pokémon? You get used to it, eventually.”

The other ghost had a peculiar little whisper behind her. How peculiar. It was a bit like the ghost dogging her right now. She had gone oddly quiet, though. Should she act like she understood the ghost? It could be a fun prank.

“Hi, Morgan! I don’t remember anything about bloody clocktowers in this life or the last one.”

Spectrier couldn't remember how he'd gotten here. He did have something of a fondness for poking his nose into strange locations. It wasn't as if walls could keep him out, and he had little to fear, given his situation.

This place, however, filled him with an uneasy dread. For starters, there didn't seem to be any way out. Next, there was the strange bracelet that had been affixed to his foreleg before he arrived. He thought about removing it, but a voice in his head told him that this was a bad idea, so he didn't.

Then there was the Zoroark whose gem had already been shattered, and her arm broken, apparently by one of the Pokemon he now found himself in the company of. And here he was hoping the group might be potential friends. This was all so much...

Spectrier laid himself down on the ethereal root-strewn forest floor in-between a Squirtle and a Noivern, which made him look somewhat dead. Maybe the enemies would leave him alone that way.

"Well, this fucking blows, huh?" That was one way to kill the vibe. Watt's ear twitched as he regarded their guide's words and gave her injury a look over.

And then his train of thought was interrupted by the one wailing about his new form, prompting him to give himself a lookover. He looked at his hands, now replaced with paws, then twisted around to observe his tail. He reached up to poke at his ears, larger than the y should be, but still similar in form. Most of his body actually lined up pretty well with his normal self, even down to the latent electricity he could feel inside him.

All things considered, it could be a lot worse.

For now, though, he watched the... uh... the maus-like guy freak out, and the ensuing interactions that followed with interest, debating whether to involve himself.

Nah. Not yet. It was more fun to see how things played out first.

[Just a quick intro post on my lunch break. I'm checking in periodically and I'll try to get more into the nitty-gritty of gameplay tonight.]

"Intriguing," he murmured. "A social deduction game. Very well; I will bend myself to it. Let us attempt to find our Demon, then."

He paused to consider his role as he understood it. How curious! It was not one he had anticipated, nor was familiar with. He hoped it would come in useful at some point.

Eyeing the dejected-looking horse to his side, Malachai realised he found the miserable creature vaguely familiar.

"Spectrier," he called, enunciating the name carefully, "Are you well? You look perturbed."

Before the group was roused by the shout of profanity, members might have awakened to a series of excited grating noises, grunts, and squeals.

"Amaze, amaze, amaze! Ground look like medium rough texture but ~OUHH~ it so soft! Grace never tell Rocky Earth was so soft!"

A Boldore tumbled around in the moss, his legs happily-- and haphazardly-- waving in the air, before stopping suddenly.

"Wait. My body different. Air not hurt Rocky. Confusion. Rocky not Rocky anymore, statement."

A brief struggle and a grunt of frustration later, and the Boldore was back upright, albeit a bit moss-stained in places. He pondered for a moment, then tapped a foot twice on the ground.

"This not Earth is it, question?"

Another day, another trip to the fucking board game dimension. It'd gotten boring by this point, honestly.

At least this one introduced a bit of variety. Slightly different setup. Maybe it'd turn out a little more interesting.

Dave sighed, glancing at the strange bracelet. "Well, this is fun."

I don't know how to metacomment on setup in-character since diagetically the setup seems to be random, so before I start playing Morgan here's some of the thoughts I have
[[For what it's worth, I asked Inke about how the roles actually in play were picked, and she indicated they were picked by random draw, though with a fixed number of Townsfolk/Outsiders/Minions and always a Demon. That said, once the setup was randomized one might expect the descriptions would be updated if it turned out some sort of tweak or elaboration had been necessary, so your setup thoughts still seem valid.]]

Dave waved a paw. "So, have any others of the rest of you played this thing before?"

[[I've only played mafia myself, not Blood on the Clocktower. Could be good to get an idea of who's familiar with this form of the game.]]

So who's the Virgin around here? Trying to make more conversation here...
Morgan raised a tendril, looking incredulous. "You can't just ask— I mean, I can't be the only one here who— Oh, wait, you meant that as another name for the Targeted Attack emera. No, I don't have that one. A shame, it's honestly pretty strong since it confirms that the bearer and the target are both good! If they claim and we don't have a sacrifice ready to go by nightfall, they'll just die or be poisoned before their power activates. It would be a good idea for the good people with hazardous emeras to tell us now, but Targeted Attack isn't necessarily one of those."

Even if someone walked facefirst into that and died, it would be more funny than tragic, they'd get all the benefits. Hell, if someone evil unknowingly tried to kill a Better Odds bearer and didn't survived, that'd be pretty incriminating in its own right. Morgan was inclinded towards killing someone on the first night.

"Oh, our Better Odds" [[Investigator]] "info would be nice to have right now, if we have that."

"So, have any others of the rest of you played this thing before?"
"I've played, like, a thing with cards that works out like this. Lower stakes, but whatever, I'm not risk-averse."

I'm usually averse to actually comitting to D1 votes but I'm down to here. I need some info to go off of for it to feel like a good idea, though.]]

So who's the Virgin around here? Trying to make more conversation here...

Watt snorted, cocking his head to the side. Well, he'd heard crasser ways to start a conversation. It took a comment from Morgan for him to realize what the funny little turtle guy actually meant.

"Woah dude. You sure its such a good idea for this, uh, virgin to go and out themself out the gate. If one of us does have the targeted attack emera, it feels like that might be information to hold close to the chest. At least until we have a bit more information to work with." He closed his eyes, shook his head and chuckled, going to stick his hands in his pockets before remembering that he didn't have any. Huh, that was going to take some getting used to.

"Anyway, what do I know? Not like I've ever played this before."

[I'm familiar with botct in name only, never had the chance to play it before myself.]

Drake had spent the past several minutes pacing in the corner, trying to come to terms with this bizarre dream. Fine. He was a rattata now. Might as well use that. Maybe he could steal a few things before he figured out how to get home, Athos would like that. Yeah... okay. That was a plan. He knew this song and dance.

Play nice, schmooze the partygoers (or well... other trapped weirdos), get something good off them. Somehow. One at a time, starting with playing nice.

And then win this game, and then get out and go home and get back to his life.

"We're... not on earth. I think," Drake said, addressing the weird (@Panoramic_Vacuum) Boldore in the room. "Anyone wanna just... come forward and admit they're a crazy murderer and we can all get out of here?"

Of course not. "Does anyone know anything?" he grumbled, trying to not sound too irritated.

[[stealing things is Flavor silliness, Drake is a thief/gang member in his story.

I actually feel like lynching feels... less useful here than mafia no? (though I notoriously despise day 1 lynches lol). I mean we don't even get any info because their role isn't revealed when they die, so it seems like we should try to be way more careful, right? If we lose one of our good powers than we're really in a jam, and we can't even confirm info.

I skimmed the wiki but I barely understand anything or my role but this will be fun.

But uh... feels like maybe we shouldn't be hasty to claim roles

Also as an aside I sort of forgot that today + tomorrow is a double whammy both evenings but after I should be pretty free. I'm headed to bed soon but hope to be on during the day tomorrow.]]
