Welcome to TR Writing Buddies, a new little forum game I thought of to encourage writing our fics!
What is a Writing Buddy?
A Writing Buddy is a little Pokémon companion that will grow right alongside your fic! The more words you write for that fic, the faster it will level up. Grow a team of buddies all the way to level 100 and watch both them and your fic grow!
How do I take part?
Simply copy the following code (you can customize it however you want) and reply to the thread: that will be your "Trainer Card" where you will keep track of all your progress. Of course, you can also put your current Writing Buddy inside your forum signature or display it anywhere else you want!

Rules about growing a Writing Buddy:
To grow your writing buddy, simply reply to this thread and report how many words you have written and for what fic. Of course, if you have multiple projects and buddies and wrote for each of them, report the progress separately.
You cannot have more than one writing buddy in your active team associated to the same fic.
Here are some general rules about how to level up your buddy;
- A Pokémon will gain 1 level for every 500 words written.
- It will gain an extra level every 4 days that you have logged some progress, no matter how small. So if you have written even just a single sentence for 4 days (not in a row, just every 4 days), it will gain a level and grow up a bit!
- It will also gain an extra level if you keep up a 7-days writing streak!
More ways to level up your Pokémon may be included later with special events!
Evolutions:
Of course, if the Pokémon is able to evolve, you can have them evolve when they reach the required level. For Pokémon that have other evolution requirements, I'm still brainstorming ideas about how to handle it, if we want to!
At the moment, these are the evolution methods implemented:
- Friendship evolutions: Bond with your Pokémon by reaching a 7 days writing streak!
- Trade evolutions: Either do a review swap or simply leave a comment on any fic on the forum!
- Item evolution: You get the item by writing 500 words in a day!
If a Pokémon has multiple combined evolution requirements (trading + item, like Porygon), just fulfilling one of the two will count.
Pokémon with more complicated evolution requirements can be discussed on a case by case basis.
How to get Writing Buddies, special Pokémon and Shinies:
It's not a Pokémon themed mini game without an incentive to catch stuff, so here are some rules!
- For your writing buddy, you can choose any Pokémon you want, except for Legendaries, Mythicals, Ultra Beasts, Paradoxes and Fossils. These could be rewards for special future events! The Pokémon *can't* be Shiny.
- You can "catch" a new Pokémon and assign it to another fic if you have multiple writing projects any time you want, for a maximum of 6. This is to discourage having too many active WIPs. (Of course, nothing stops you from actually having a hundred of them, but you won't be able to log progress for more than six at a time in this game)
- Once you have reached a "full team" of six, you can't catch any more unless you first reach level 100 with one of the Pokémon in your team. At that point, the level 100 Pokémon gets boxed and you can assign a new Pokémon to that project (if it's not done)
- If the writing project associated to a Pokémon ends before it reaches level 100, you can choose to "freeze it" at the level it reached or simply assign it to a new writing project to keep levelling it up.
- Events in the future could give you Mystery Eggs where a randomly generated Pokémon will hatch out of it. With a bit of luck, it could even be shiny!
Achievements and Events:
Just to add a little spice to the game, there will be achievements and events to give us something else to work towards!
The achievements could range from your fic simply reaching a certain word threshold to mentioning certain Pokémon in your fic to taking part in certain events. When you have satisfied the requirements for each achievement, you can add them to your Trainer Card in this thread.
Events meanwhile will be special occurrences triggered from time to time: they could be anything from "Boss battles" where every participant races to write as much as possible in a month to "defeat" a powerful boss Pokémon, to distribution of Mystery Eggs, to writing challenges combined with other events on the forum! Events could reward special Pokémon, the possibility to have your next writing buddy be Shiny, bonuses to level up your current writing buddies faster, and more!
And of course, bragging rights and the satisfaction of having actually written your fic, since that's the most important thing at the end of the day!

Kind of in an awkward place where I'm doing way more editing than drafting for my main fic, but I'll set something up for my side project. Just aiming for 2k words a month with it; definitely not going to be working on it every day, but for now...
