This should be pretty simple, you ask would you rather questions regarding fanfiction. This can be about pokemon fanfiction specifically or fanfiction in general. I'll start:

Would you rather read a badly written fanfic with tropes on enjoy or a well written fanfic with tropes you dislike?

since i use fandom for a mix match of comfort reading and learning/experimentation i'm pretty chill about quality and hold tropes/story beats as paramount importance.

Granted i will read someyhing w tropes i dont like if i personally like the writer. But beyond that i ususally cant be bothered.

There isn't really any fixing a story with tropes I dislike.

Reading a badly written one with tropes I like is much more enjoyable. Especially if I can help the author in some way with making improvements!

I've also noticed that people with badly written fics are more likely to be enjoyable to communicate/interact with. They are also less likely to ghost you from what I have observed. Even an author who writes badly still has their own unique perspective and can still point out useful things in reviews!

I've read so much stuff (not just fanfic, stuff like paranormal romances) that have such good concepts and tropes on paper, especially ones I don't see done anywhere else... only for the story to turn out to be utter dogwater. I feel like a lot of literature is trending towards tropes instead of telling actual stories and it can be dangerous to only view a work through that lens. So I'd rather have a good story with none of my preferred tropes.

Depends on how you define bad writing and how strict the tropes are, but overall, I definitely lean towards preferring good writing to tropes I like. I can buy into almost any type of story if the plot's intriguing and the pacing is solid!

It's super tricky... Truly, for me it depends on the specific tropes and how bad/in what way the writing is, heh. Like, there are some tropes I don't like but am willing to look past if I otherwise enjoy the characters, plot, etc. But there are some tropes I absolutely hate that I will immediately drop a story for if they appear. On the flip side, I can enjoy a story that plays into my specific tastes even if it's got some hiccups, but with some tropes I can unfortunately fall into feelings of "you're doing what I love wrong," and if the writing is bad enough that I actively struggle to understand what's going on frequently, I'm obviously not getting through that story.

So overall I think it's one of those terrible "it depends" answers. On balance I'd probably lean towards well-written with tropes I dislike, because I can be annoyed more by quirks of poor writing more than I am the presence of particular tropes.
