Trainer and Pokemon World Economics

Im trying to spitball math for my journeyfic, and went "yeah this probably varies a lot based on interpretation"

Where do you sit on various matters of financing and expenses in the pokemon world?
  • Does the league provide a stipend? How often? How much? For who?
  • What does a pokeball cost?
  • Do you use yen, poké, or another unit of currency entirely? Do you derive cost from canon in some fashion or do you come up with your own
  • Is being a trainer cost prohibitive?
  • What is the cost of living? Do your trainers eke out a small fund from battle winnings and eat cafeteria food at pokecenters?
Ive been having a lot of these thoughts, whether this week or years back when I first read Gods & Demons by keleri, or now and again reading something like Borne of Caution where it comes up

I know a number of fics may not keep track, and this isnt the same for pmd works, so this may be a moot question to consider for most

On my end, my pokeverse has been in a state of frequent changes based on what canons Im immersed in, what I want to use from a fic Im reading for my headcanons, so-on

Ive always gone with "pokedollars are yen, subtract two digit places and get usd", and thats all and well until I get to "uhhh okay pokeball is 2 bucks.. wb rent"

And thats where the bigger questions start cropping up.
For trainers who are legal minors (and not orphaned or kicked out) housing is something you know you can come back to eventually, so thats not an expense.. but we dont know if say Delia Ketchum has a mortgage or how she pays it. We dont have a ton of answers on how layfolk live and pay for their lives in the pokemon world.
Whether its because its made for kids and thinking about this just stresses people out.. or because the games arent about trainers above the age of 16 let alone adults that would be taxpayers.. or because the setting has utopian intent plastered all over it we dont exactly know

I can handwaive some elements though.
A financial system of some form exists because we have pokedollar transactionary exchanges in mainline games.
Single parent households, and overall households with children, are subsidized. Delia Ketchum regardless of career or estate ties, affords her lifestyle because (if extrapolating from stuff like the novel) she was a teen mom.. who not long after was abandoned. Whether she had the home beforehand, whether it was from family or a housing voucher, she has it now and its a guaranteed thing in her life.

I generally imagine, unless things have 'gone wrong' due to economic meddling, most pokemon regions have an economic system with socialist or communist elements, in that markets are sufficiently regulated that tax evasion by corporate interests is minimized, and a fair number of social safety nets exist.
Pokemon leagues and careers fulfill a keystone species role in economies beyond what our irl world had to offer.

I imagine low unemployment rates whether due to the countless paths one can take as a pokemon trainer, or robust economies, and I imagine largely free healthcare, affordable food and housing, so-on.

A lot of this assumes things dont 'go wrong', or that being an adult isnt a soul-crushing experience for many.
I have also imagined that those who fail to become career trainers, having watched their dreams crumble, must find some way of paying the bills if it isnt back to their prior routine. Maybe the wages make life affordable, maybe it means long hours.
The games now and again include some darker moments, like ORAS had a mauville resident being abducted by men in black for being behind on rent payments and is never to be seen again.

On some level this was the basis for my concept on The Casca Region project, in that like a number of regions out there the pokemon league's political power wanes, and what usage there is is by actors who are contempt or swayed by private interests. Erasure of the middleclass plays out, cost of living increases, and now and again you see a parent pressuring their kid(s) to go on a journey and become a profitable trainer for the family or get serious about their career prospects atter highschool.
In other words, people acting in response to changing material conditions, whether the results are pretty or not.

At the same time Im not sure Im ready to write the cascan pre / revolutionary period narratives. I have a twine game concept likenable to the oregon trail romhack, but again it doesnt mean Im actively working on it.

Nestball Testall and Perlin's noise takes place a good 10 to 15 years after the recovery period begins, and by then my intent is for things to have reached some status quo with pokemon regions like the game depicts, if not a bit more bearable.

And with an adult protag a good decade older than any of the game protagonists.. woops I need to map out their finances

Unrepentent Giovanni and Rocket fan
The importance of economics varies on the tale and if its going to be a plot point worth wrangling my dreaded foe MATH to deal with.

In most of my tales theres a sponsership program for the dex holders/main character thats enough to cover cost of living and training (pokeballs, food, board, mon and human medical) and theres a robust social/economic incentive to support registered trainers. if you want extras (indulgences, nicer camping supplies, tms/hm training, electronics, cell phones, extra clothes/cosmetics) you can scrap up enough by tackling a few battles a month and pinching pennies. Winning a gym leader can set someone up nicly for several weeks to months depending on the characters frugility. As most protags tend to be compitent battlers money ususally isnt a big deal and going this route sweeps fiscal pressure under the rug and allows me to avoid MATH.

On a cop out of economic fic i will just call everything costs "number value" and skip things like naming currency, different regions having different rates, and market cocnerns.

Generally the Regions run capitalist with an obscenly detailed social and fiscal network to keep people afloat and mudfle the damage. Ironically giovanni, rose, lysandre, and ghestis being very well off obligates them to fiscally sink money into thier regions social networks. This grants them some immunities. Theres holes (people fall through enough that teams thrive in each every region) but for most theres a way to claw out.

Children are expected to journey and a sucsessful one can build up a nest egg for them to explore the world post training days. each town's buisnesses and industries try to lure the youth to explore other non league options. Each town has specialties and leaving one town to go to the other post journey to persue a career is pretty common and people staying in the league is rather rare. While its a sustainable lifestyle if you win a lot, bad luck can drive you out. And long term trainers tend to join the gym system, professor fields, or ranger system once thier luck starts turning.

I tend to avoid fiscal issies but I've three fics that subvert this hard.

Roost (series)

The two main factions that deal in fiscals are team rocket (giovanni and rocket) and team green (green, silver, and yellow). Everyone else is plot protected by the aformentioned sponsership.

Rocket literally is up to the ears in adult fiscal affairs. They wrnangle stocks, markets, half the fued with Flare and rocket is giovanni and lysandre having a hissyfit over kanto, jhoto, and seviis markets, resources, and talent. Board meetings, mergers, international trade are part and partial to gios life and when he narrates it shows.

Green, who dubs all the above "boring" and is buming off her parents has her own fiscal issues. She's been self sufficient for ages. And at first goes along with pacifying her parents and stops all illegal and barely legal swindles to rake in income. Believing they will support her unconditionally... When that proves false she has to wrangle the trainer system as an unsponsered trainer (paperwork ahoy) and actually gets a job and earn a new sponsership to get out of Sevii You get a sense of what things cost in what she legally pays for, and wrangles for, and does without.

Silvers part of it goves you a snapshot of what an unlucky unsponsered trainer has to deal with. He has to attack small children and their mon for their lunch money to afford food and dryly admits to skipping meals regularly because trainer season is winding down and his marks are getting scanty and he doesnt want to have to go back to breaking and entering to scrape up enough money for food and shelter. Butnhis options are looking grim ad he cant challengr the league without sponsering and elm and oak cut him and green off. The adults he tells this are horrified but silver doesn't want to turn himself into the state. Part from the horror stories about the system (justified) and part scared pryce will go after him if he stays still too long and hed be will be endangering a lot of little kids (all but garenteed)

Yellow contrasts everyone by havong decent resourses and shows whats expected of someone wormkng class well off without extra stressors.

Transversal (series)
Despite being set in an insane never neverland of a region for ninty percent economics take a sweeping role since its (villian) protag is a buisness mongul and fiscals are his bread and butter.

Giovanni starts top of the world, and gets to flaunt the resources of unlimited wealth as a baseline, when he gets shunted into eldritch alola and put down to zero he grabs everything of any fiscal value (his or otherwise) and liquidates it via legal and illegal avenues. He builds up a nest egg to survive and aloas economical issues (aether runs like a meglomaniac walmart without any government checks and balances, having thier hands in everything, crushing all competitors, with only the upper tiers paid anything like well off) are plot points.

He gets skull to eat out of his hands by supplying steady food and housing (very late game). Defanging aether's muscle and ruining thier rep by making them get thier hands dirty and providing the evidence to the masses.

Is able to i.d. aether as evil not only per Lillies hearsay but by going over thier open record finances. Despite thier "savior" status in alola they're literally driving everything and everyone to fiscal desperation/ruination and anyone with any economic literacy can see the whole region is going to collapse in less then five years and that aethers the root cause. He winds up tipping au interpol off on this and makes the police and governments llegally be a wrench aethers operations to buy him time and attack avenues to go after lumasine himself.

In the background works gio starts as a working man (mob and otherwise) and has to claw his way to stability until he can gain control of the madams legal buisness after her death. Hes lived staggering from paycheck to paycheck as a run of the mill trainer and his greed/ obsession with money is firmly intrenched in a near manic need to never live like that again...

His wife is a nurse who only gets into his view by literally winning viridian's lotto, (when they meet hes deeply entrenched in his socioeconomic upper class) and making it a hobby to screw with the upperclass. She has issues with money managment and spending and theres plot time dedicated to him getting her literacy up to speed amd getting her to let go of poverty born habits and fiscal trauma (with mixed sucsess).

Basically at her lowest gios wife (grace) was a homeless med student living in a friends car and couch surfing for half of her schooling (being cut off by her folks and the systems in place offering no support to anyone without familial recomendations). At his lowest giovanni was roughing it between mob or legit jobs ("training" was his excuse) or scrapping ends together to live in a matchbox of a studio apartment.

Where grace was mainly fiscally abused by the system gio was fiscally abused by the madam and his immediate family and those are plot points.

Other money nods. Daisy oak who isnt sponsered by prof. Oak or her immediate family lives off an international mon trading system and gaming that system to get good mon to train as well as sell to suppliment her Journey income until she decides to get into a sustainable profession.

[/SPOILER]

Dodging consequences (singularity)
An anime au gen one focused where giovanni is murdered by his creation during the orange isle break out and then reincarnated as a 'mon. And the fall out of kantos economic keystone (illegally and legally) going missing is being felt. He had no contignuncy plans or wills set up, so while at first everythings chugging along as he's declared missing, when he's declaired dead kanto starts taking hits. Without a firm hand the economics start to break down.

On a smaller scale this verse and professor oak are friendly and gios kept a fiscal and political hand on things to keep the league and kantos irs from heckling oak for years. When he passes the benifits cut off, oaks one inche from shutting down as the police are launching a highly illegal freeze on both gio and oaks a fiscals trying to dig up proof of a Rocket connection. And this puts a crimp on Oaks resources and thus the starting group of kid's resources. He'd ususally bank roll everything then gets a payout from the league depending on how the kids did and supliment that massive lump sum with things like research papers, sponserships, and selling surplus mon abandoned by trainers... But with his rep in the tubes, and everything shut down by the gov, and a smear campaign from the powers that be, no ones taking anything of his and hes draining his retirement to keep everything afloat and seriously thinking about selling his land outside kanto to get some income...

Hes sends ash, who canonically came late, with a wild nidoran male pup (he had to sell the other backup starters for a quick buck) he was nursing back to health. The mon (reincarnated gio) is totally unsuited to Journey and Oak is bankrolling none of these kids. Thier parents are having to cover everything. Ash, whose got a single working class mom on a borderline min wage job, cant afford to fund anything so Oak winds up having to squiggle in Ash as a research aide so he can legally take nido out of town and pick up mon beyond pets...

And thats it.

Ash has no stripend, cant even afford a pokeball, the networks of League centers are inaccessable per him not being a "proper trainer", and his food supplies are emergency cobbled together rations that delia and oak homecook amd send him off with. Oak keeps ash very close to pallet with a few jobs so he can learn the ropes safely but when the boy branches out he has to win x amount of fights to pay for food and shelter and pokeballs, has to sleep rough nine times out of ten, and has to regularly sell (or have oak sell) his catches once he gets income enough to get a few pokeballs. He cant catch them all. hes gotta keep a firm eye on market value and weigh it against what his team can tackle because if they get k.o.ed he can take them to a center but he wont get his mon back since he "obviously" cant support his team and the state is going to revoke his liscence if he shows any signs of "hardship".

Which honestly is way too much for a kid of ten to really tackle.

Gio winds up having to hack his own illegally garnered finances and "work remotly" to support the kid, oak, and delia. But for ages he cant and near starves to death for it.

I feel like this is m ore a worldbuilding question, unless we are looking for whatvever canonical information there is in the games...?

Anyway.

I avoid microeconomics and specifics, such as giving items prizes or detailing any payment method other than "cash", mostly because it's an easy way to date (age) your story when you mostly write slow, that and I usually write across several regions so matching numbers tends to not be relevant (or is just not possible across universes, eg.: PMD).

Trainers being essentially minors on a school trip under some form of institutional supervision (goverment or otherwise), it makes sense that their requirements and expenditures are tracked and managed, which means both a stipend and a sort of promotional transaction system (eg.: giftcards). It's just about the only way to even the field somewhat for everyone, and it helps prevent younger Trainers from getting into the world of embezzlement and crypto at the ripe young age of 10.

It is a bit of a worldbuilding question, but it isnt as though we have a worldbuilding subofrum, right?

We are currently using Fic Discussion for that, but I might take you at your word and see if I can file issue to open up a Worldbuilding subforum. I'm admittedly not sure it's specifically needed - most of the stuff it would currently need to cover is already organized into a fic discussion section or similar and tagged with... well, tags. In fact the only forum I've seen around that I'm in and that has a dedicated worldbuilding section, coincidentally has no support for tags,

Who knwos? I'll give it a thought.

If you have recommendations on tags for this thread I'd be apreciated, otherwise hm I should ask moderation to move this then to Fic Discussion
