Blood Is Thicker Than Poison is almost entirely credited to panoramic_vacuum's brilliance, she helped me nail it down. I knew I wanted a title that referenced poison/toxic etc, and was thinking of things like 'Toxic Chains' or 'Toxic Bonds', to encapsulate the idea of a main character ensared in a toxic relationship, but also all my prospective titles didn't vibe at all and were kind of on the nose or awkward.

Toxic Roots was also a strong contender to reference Orre's toxic past, and the MC's and how those things can influence us, but again, blah. other ones were Poisoned Streets and Toxic Nature, Corroded Bonds and ... yeah you get the picture. They were all rather plain to me for this project though.

Pano was the one to suggest the title, and it was spot on. As you can surmise the name references the popular phrase "Blood is Thicker than Water" which usually means family over friends, but unreported sources say 'blood of the covenant (friendship) is thicker than the water of the womb(family).'

Regardless of if thats true, it encapsulates the idea of the struggle of the poisonous relationship and a good one, and which one will win out in the end. Also, Blood + Poison hopefully suggests it while be a whump/angst kind of story.

Time to return with a brand new batch of canisfic names!

Kills-Other-Humans: The nickname given by the character Barely-There (a Shuppet) to the protagonist Andre (a human), who is a serial killer. Ghost names in HHverse in general tend to be descriptive phrases joined by hyphens.

Batty!: I'm not freakin joshin you when I say that this title came from a brony song. Yes! It's a reference to Super Ponybeat's Batty. As for why I chose that in particular, it was because Batty! is a story about bat Pokémon becoming vampiric. It also hints at the story being more on the lighthearted side. Well, for a canisfic, anyway.

Into Light: This title has two meanings. The first one is a reference to the fact that ghosts, when exorcised by the protagonist, disappear into light. The second is that something deeply hidden "comes to light" in the story. As for what that is, you'll have to read the story to find out!

Judgment: This title has even more meanings! It refers to the judgment passed on the imprisoned Chandelure in the story by society and the justice system, the judgment of Arceus that the Chandelure fears she'll face, and it also is literally the name of the signature move of Arceus, which is a big talking point in the story. It's ultimately that last one that settled whether I used the British or American spelling.

Whine-Yelp: This is a reference to the name of the main character, Iwai the Houndour. "Iwai" is only a transliteration of his name, as his name is comprised of a whine and a yelp, being from a canine language.

In Search of Haven: The characters of the story are searching for a legendary safe haven which is literally known as Haven.

Attack of The 50-Foot Brent: This is playing on the trope TV Tropes likes to call Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever (TV Tropes link warning, if we're still in the habit of warning for it). But it also literally features the extremely-minor character Brent from Dragony attacking the Dragon Kingdom's capital.

Abnormality: This title is in reference to the abnormal occurrences in the White Caves, the holding place of the Blank Plate. It also has "normal" in the name, and the Normal type is pretty relevant to the story.

And finally... Cor Daemonis: Latin for "(the) heart of (a) demon". Refers both to Red, who is a demon and whose emotional and romantic life is relevant to the story, and Andre, whom Heaven has branded a "demonheart" for his unconventional sexual preferences. Latin as a language also has an Christian lore vibe to it, and while the heaven and hell in Cor Daemonis aren't Christian, the story does play with a few Christian (well, Abrahamic) references here and there, such as through the existence of a fly-headed demon character with the surname Balson (Baal's Son).

I still have other stories whose titles' origins I haven't shared, but I think I've given enough. Hope this was an interesting read.

Wowsers it’s been a while, I’ll update this with my most recent fics.

Gathering Moss - Basically a response to the motto ‘a rolling stone gathers no moss’, where the Golurk protag Terra operates under this phrase until they overwork themselves into potential hibernation and have to face their own mortality, hence the title.

Beasts Like Us - Gets quoted by one of the characters verbatim in the line ‘this world ain’t built for beasts like us’. The context of the line is quite literal since both the Pokémon characters in that scene acknowledge they will never fit into a human world, but it has a double meaning since it applies to Glen and Barry, who both feel uncomfortable in their own skin as a Machoke and human respectively, which is what brings them together. This was inspired by the title of the film All Of Us Strangers; I didn’t like the film that much but the title always left a strong thematic impression on me and the film also dealt with a gay couple, so that felt fitting here.

Gakutensoku -- literally "learning from the laws of nature", this was the name of an automaton meant to inspire peace. You can read more about it here! And that's more or less what I want from Arturo/AI Turo as the story progresses and he finds his place in the world.

I totally forgot this one...

So i got one that i forgot to mention.

Roost: a gift fic

The gift fic aspect is obvious. Itnis a gift. The part of roost is actually where the bulk of the symbolism lies.

The main protag green has been on the run for ages. Ergo shes been in flight, and the begining of the story is that shes come home. Aka to roost.

But theres also the consequences of her journey that are also coming home (literally) to roost. And s8nce she is no longer running they hit thier target hard.

Last tidbit is mon move lore. Roost alows those in flight to heal. Its not perfect but green is trying to heal from... canon everything. Also roosting makes flying types vulnerable to ground types... and giovanni coming knocking is a juge plot point starting chapter 1.

Alright, first I'll throw mine in here and then a couple shout outs to Negrek and Sind.

Mine being: TCG2: Doduo Adventures - Book One: TCG Island

So TCG obviously stands for trading card game. 2 because its based off the sequel to the original Gameboy Color game. Book One because I'm making it a multi-book series, TCG Island because all of it takes place there as opposed to the other two Islands: Neo Island and GR Island.

Doduo Adventures because it features a ridiculous Doduo who follows the protagonist around. Also, what fic is about Doduo? Pretty much none, right? So why not marry weird with weird and make it about Doduo AND the tcg? Also, I injected some more weird in it, just because. Bonus with it being such an unpopular mon that it doesn't make my fic look like a try-hard.

@Negrek
Little God - A spinoff of Salvage, and tbh this would have made a fine title for it, too. From the flavor text for the Ancient Mew TCG card, which reads, "Little god... or evil?" This phrase really made an impression on me back when I first learned the translation. Mew has really always been portrayed as cute, playful, mostly friendly or harmless, so this piece of flavor text that seemed at such odds with that image was fascinating. It suggested a rawer, more nuanced picture of Mew, which perhaps could be cute and playful but perhaps also ruthless, even terrifying. This idea strongly shaped how I portrayed the Mew-relatives in Salvage, and since Little God focuses on Mew herself, it only makes sense for it to appear as the title!

...according to the Bulbapedia page the translation is actually supposed to be "Little cat... or evil?" instead, so perhaps my life has been a lie, that still works more or less but is way less dramatic, damn.
Woah all this stuff about mew and how it ties to a TCG card is super cool! Based on this, I think you would enjoy Book One for my fic :mewlulz: (Yes I know you reviewed a good chunk of my original fic but I've made some big improvements since then. I'd love to see what you think of it sometime if you're willing.)

@Sinderella
White Swan, Black Swan is more or less a title that’s meant to “make fun” of the fact the main character’s name is Odette. I have “make fun” in quotes because there is quite a little bit of stupid ironic name/theme play happening too that I personally find like 25% clever 😂 But in the end it is more or less trying to poke fun at the MC’s name. If you’ve ever seen the ballet Swan Lake or the old animated movie The Swan Princess, you’d know the main character/white swan’s name is...Odette.

White Swan, Black Swan used to be called “Champ in the Making,” because the original concept for the story was primarily centered around Odette finding her path to glory after facing trauma and falling into the clutches of a crime syndicate. But, the story quickly devolved into something much more dark, political, and occult-y, and “Champ in the Making” started to not really fit the story anymore. Odette finding glory is no longer the main theme—somewhat of a subplot, but most certainly not the focus. The story is now her finding her way out of a dumpster fire of sin she’s completely unaware she’s in until the smoke blows in her face, while coming to terms with her...other half, so to speak.

The apparent two-sidedness to the name White Swan, Black Swan just ended up making more sense. I additionally felt it just fits the overall dark atmosphere the story has. Also HEEHOO ODETTE THE WHITE SWAN LOLOLOL FUNNY FUNNY 😂
I think the name you chose is pretty darn clever compared to most. Pretty cool! You might be laughing at it here, but I just find it neat.
