The Festival of Masks​

Every year Kitakami celebrates its Festival of Masks, an ancient tradition where villagers don intricate masks and gather to share in good food, games, music, and storytelling. In recent years the festival has attracted visitors from afar, and there's no distinction between local and foreigner so long as they wear a mask and respect Kitakami's traditions.

Mystery fills the air beneath the paper lanterns. Commoners mingle with royalty, fierce rivals set aside their differences, and people from all walks of life come together all unknowing, anonymous behind their masks. Rumor has it that even pokémon may walk among humans undetected. Anything can happen at the Festival of Masks!

Well, anything besides Kitakami's famed Loyal Three miraculously returning to life and deciding to crash the party, of course. That would just be silly.

Welcome to the Festival of Masks, a short, casual RP that I'll be running at the start of November. This is a loosely plot-driven RP, but if you just want to have your character hang around and bounce off the other PCs or bother some of Kitakami's notable personalities, that's totally fine, too. Please note that due to the nature of the plot and setting, this RP will contain major spoilers for the Teal Mask DLC.

Although this RP takes place in the trainerverse, you are welcome to bring either human or pokémon characters. Pokémon will be treated the same as humans and able to interact freely with all other characters, although it's recommended they keep their maskes on--there might be a bit of a scandal if they don't! Trainer characters are welcome to bring their pokémon team with them, but their pokémon should be limited to brief appearances for things like battles, or to background mentions. To keep things simple, each person should only have one proper player character.

Sign-ups will be open through November 3rd, with gameplay beginning November 5th and running through November 19th.

Character Name: Kohath I
Species: Human (Helixian, which are humans enhanced by HELIX)
Pronouns: He/him
Mask: Desert Houndoom, such as this one.

Appearance: Two meters tall, very muscular with body hair. Bronze skin, yellow eyes, enlarged canine teeth, dark brown short curly hair and a trimmed beard. Is wearing a white-and-red toga-like garment for this occasion as well as golden earrings. Thirty-something in age.


Personality: Proud warrior king. Don't mistake his brashness for a sign of low intellect, though.
Additional Notes: He lived and died 4,000 years ago in a Bronze Age kingdom, so he will be unfamiliar with any technology that hadn't been invented yet during his time.

Species: Oshawott, formerly human

Mask: Charmander
Appearance:
Personality: An anxiety-ridden homesick former human who is absolutely terrified of being alone.
Additional Notes: His favorite place to be pet is behind his ears. Though he doesn't really like being pet at all.

Character Name: Kari
Species: Human
Pronouns: She
Mask: Skitty
Appearance: Kind of short. Light blue hair pulled up in a tiny, spiky bun (no the pic isn't spiky, pretend it is), teal-ish blue eyes. Probably wearing something suitable to the festival.


Personality: Quiet and shy. Gets better at communication when she gets to know someone. Or they're all hidden behind masks.
Additional Notes: She travels to learn about other cultures for classwork. She's here with her girlfriend Ana, who immediately saw something shiny and ran off, and so they're separated. (For background flavor only, I'm not RPing two characters.)

Well I thought about Nori Carino just based on the design joke that I compared him to a genderswapped Maya Kamizono appearance-wise. Or Prema Kannagi. Though problem with both is that they have walking Pokemon who'd be with them frequently. And at least two of the others wouldn't fit "human or Pokemon". So let's go with the fun idea I had last night.

Character Name: Priestess Satomi Kurusu
Species: Human
Pronouns: She is a she, but doesn't care if you tastefully joke.
Mask: A ridiculous Absol mask, horn included but shows her eyes and doesn't cover her mouth.
Appearance: You wouldn't guess she's a woman in her 90s, rather one in her 60s at most. She's tall, lean, fit, has only slightly graying hair, milky white eyes (naturally, she sometimes wears colored contacts), and only a few wrinkles.
Personality: She's loyally served the Kannagi family for four generations. This is a woman who hasn't slowed down a bit in her elder years. She's kind and jovial, and sometimes devil-may-care, cunning, sharp, and even trollish. Of course, she's willing to dispense her wisdom to the younger generation. Can sometimes be cryptic, hinting at something without saying it up front.
Additional Notes: Satomi has been to the festival many times in the past. Because of this, she almost certainly knows some of the Kitakami natives, maybe not personally for some. She figured what's really up with history here, but naturally, some truths should go unspoken. Of course, she is trolly and cryptic as mentioned. Why else would she wear a mask of a commonly misunderstood species of Pokemon?

Character Name: Evie
Species:  ? (Shh, it's a spoiler)
Pronouns:  She/Her
Mask: Eevee
Appearance:  A brown fox with a lighter cream-colored mane and is almost as tall as the average person when standing.

Personality: Snarky and analytical, is definitely a level-headed girl who does not have problems with her emotions. Enjoys a challenge and reading. Will not hesitate to call you out if she disagrees with something.
Additional Notes: Came here because she found a letter and decided to not bring it to the group after remembering what happened the last time they accepted an invitation.

Character Name: Theo
Species: Zorua, formerly Human.
Pronouns: He/Him
Mask: Kantonian Vulpix
Appearance: Usually looks like an average zorua wearing a red scarf. In his human disguise, he is about 5'8", has light blue eyes, messy black hair, and still has the tail of a zorua. He is wearing clothes that suit the festival.
Personality: Mischievous, confident, and talkative. Trusts others, but is able to figure out when he's being played for a fool. Plans to have fun thanks to the anonymity that comes with wearing a mask in this festival.
Additional Notes: A human-turned-zorua using his illusions to disguise himself as a human, and is unaware that his tail is visible. If you pull it, he transforms back (like in Master of Illusions).

Species: Turtwig
Mask: Trapinch
Pronouns: He/Him
Appearance: He's literally just a Turtwig, that's all. ...Except for the scarf he's wearing.
Personality: Modest and easygoing, he seems to be agreeable for the most part, but he frequently has some odd moments that come as a result of his 'plain' nature.
Additional Notes: Sean is from a world of Pokémon where humans are not present and are commonly believed by many to be myths, though Sean is rather indifferent to the idea of them, and would have no trouble with seeing them. If needed for any convenience, I can play him as if he's witnessed humans before.

Character Name: Marcel Benedetti
Species: Human
Pronouns: he/him
Mask: Ogerpon probably

Personality: Marcel is amiable and level headed, but has a slight temper on certain issues. He has a strong sense of justice and wants to help people, and is at heart a very hopeful optimist who is willing to try and give chances. At the same time he's no naive idiot, and has a dash of pragmatism.
Additional Notes: he's my sole well adjusted adult character I can't believe it

Character Name: Jean Ambrose
Species: Ninetales Pokémorph
Pronouns: she/her
Mask: Pikachu
Appearance: Jean was originally a Vulpix Pokémorph, with a mostly human body, Vulpix ears, and Vulpix curls and tails. Later, she partially evolved, rendering her strangely proportioned, with longer limbs than she should have and a partially elongated face in addition to nine tails, blonde hair, Ninetales ears and a collar of thick fur around her neck.
Personality: Very bubbly and excitable but naïve, though she has mellowed and been forced to grow up a little since around the time of her evolution.
Additional Notes: Jean comes from the world of Morphic, where no events from Pokémon canon are real, though some of it exists as fiction in-universe. Legendary Pokémon, as far as anyone can tell in that universe, are simply myths.

Character Name: Vienna Cinq-Mars
Species: Human
Pronouns: She/Her/Hers
Mask: Hatterene
Appearance: Vienna has a bad case of Anime Mom-itis. She’s average height (but the pumps she tends to wear bring her up a few inches), she’s curvy in all the right places, and has the brown-doe-eyed full-lipped face to match. To top it all off is her head of thick, curly black hair, that somehow looks unruly and well-kept at the same time. As a Pokemon Professor, she’s usually wearing a lab coat.
Personality: Vienna fronts as a bubbly, friendly face, and for the most part, she is usually that friendly. However, dig a little deeper, and you’ll find the seductive, mischievous, and oftentimes manipulative layers she usually shows when she’s looking for a means to an end, or just for a fun time. She’s quite sharp and quick-witted, so good luck pulling any fast ones on her (although she might get a kick out of it). She’s quite the brain when she isn’t trying to shmooze a drinks and a one-night stand out of older men she finds attractive, so talking about anything scholarly and occult science relater are two ways to really get her going.
Additional Notes: Right now I think I’m pulling Vienna from a point in time where she’s in her late 20’s, early 30’s, but I might change my mind later idk.

Character Name: Tanofret
Species: Torchic
Pronouns: she/her
Mask: Okidogi
Appearance: A normal torchic, for the most part. Has a simple linen sash wrapped around her neck, under which a bit of gold jewelry can be seen if she's not taking care to keep it hidden.
Personality: Curious, inquisitive. Nervous that she's not supposed to be here and having a hard time letting that go. Determined to help if she sees something going wrong, but very unsure about how to do so.
Additional Notes: She's basically from the Bronze Age and has no idea wtf is going on lol but hey, looks like a party!
