So, I'm playing through Black now for my big project where I get all evil Team related dialogue in the Pokemon games in a nice, chronological script. I haven't played this game since 2011, so I'd forgotten a lot about these games. (If you want to know how much I forgot, gen 4 and 5 had apparently merged in my head to create one super gen where I routinely mixed up Galactic and Plasma.)
Doing this project where I collect all the dialogue has been helpful because I slowed down when I engaged with the grunts. I hadn't remembered this, but the grunts, for the most part, are true believers in this game. They think they're doing the right thing. They're really aggressive about it, but they sound hurt when you defeat them because it means Pokemon will continue to suffer.
This game also really sets up a lot more future "stuff" that appears later. Like needing to capture the Legendary for the story to progress? I'd forgotten gen 5 introduced that. Or merging the Pokemon Centers and Marts together. I kind of considered gen 6 the start of "new" Pokemon in terms of vibe (exp all on by default, the Fairy typing, obviously the 3D), but Gen 5 shows me the changes were more gradual.
I also have a lot of thoughts on how Gen 5 relates to Gen 4, since it feels like an attempt to up the ante on what they'd already done in Gen 4. Not to mention comment on an (unfair) accusation that has plagued Pokemon from the beginning. I'll leave that till I finish the games though~
