My fanfic

So I've hit an impasse with my fanfic which is about a former overworked grad student , forced into a life he didn't want rediscovering himself as a Frogadier. In particular I'm not sure what kind of Pokemon world fits with the theme of this fanfic and what the equivilent of the guild and Wigglytuff should be in this fic and the main conflict on the Pokemon world's side should be(as well as whether or not to go for switching back and forth between the pokemon and human world).

Does anyone have any ideas on how to world build so that this story hits hard? Or for that matter is the premise of my story flawed so that the story becomes hard to continue.
I'd like some specific tips and guidance .

thank you.

If this were me, I'd turn the guild into a research guild, with a Noctowl as its head. I would mainly set it in your imagined Pokeworld, but show your hero's former human life in flashbacks.

What is the story's main theme? Being true to yourself? Learning where you truly belong?

Well Long story short, yeah the main theme is learning where you truly belong and discovering your roots. The idea for this story came from my experience in undergraduate, which was a pressure cooker of an undergraduate experience(I've gone to one of the most academically rigorous schools in the country, and lets just say that the PMD and Breath of Fire communities have been one of the only things keeping it more sane and pretty much the de facto public forum during college[even though grad school is practically designed to take your time and I don't want to be here, so my time is limited] . Without PMD, I would have become a complete workaholic with 0 personality and empathy. ) . I've also seen just how much of a pressure cooker academia is first hand during grad school and the sheer amount of beauracracy and time stealing it really does and 100% agree with this blog: 100 reasons not to go to grad school . This is also designed as a criticism of cult like work places, with toxic positivity cultures.

If we are going for hits hard... and wanna skip flashbacks?

Well how about a world collides?

Have him be a hero in the mon world and a mundane drifter in the r.l. (perhaps pull a wolfwalkers where he advwntures when he dreams?) and as hus mon adventures get wider and wider and then eventually breech the mon's "forbidden territory" and he starts recognizing its a) human territory and b) his home town...

Itd add a certian odd kick to things.

You know what, that sounds like a good direction to go in(although I haven't watched wolfwalkers, only song of the sea). Although I may have to change the pokemon he becomes because I was going to have him be in a bit more of a supporting role, and him being a Frogadier was symbolic of how ninjas were some of the most trustworthy people during Sengoku Jidai, and it symbolized him becoming one of the most important allies to one of the greatest heroes. Hattori Hanzo literally showed his loyalty to Tokugawa Iieyasu by driving back Shingen when he was down to only 5 men.

Basically the take away is the human body sleeps (and is very vulnerable) and the spirit/mind takes becomes a wolf (well mon in this case) and does its own thing until the person wakes up.

Out of curiosity was the vicinti's name either peppy or hare? (Keeps reading) nevermind, guess its mood swinger...

If we are swinging the duel life bit... you could pull it as alexander being a maladaptive dreamer perhaos? Hes got this little world in his head that gets realer and realer... until its not quite in his head anymore... it'll alow you to build whichever side you want to focus on, and adjust it from section to section until youre ready to either hop full ninja froggy or full human.

Hmm i'm kinda wondering why his peers would visit to taunt him. I mean, normally you get dropped like youre hot when incarceration happens and visits can be blocked (using the united states judicial system here for rules/regulations, i can 9nky imagune russias would be infinitly stricter) so theyd in theroy only be able to do so once...

So plot concern(i started reading the base document after combing over others replies, so i guess this counts as a review? Sorta?) After his parents passing and him being rescued by rudra, was alex adopted by him? It soubds like a buisness relationship... but in pressure cooker alex is talking about mom and dad and i got confused.

The struct insanity of the academia, what soubds like an insane distopia society, as well as the pressures of his hime life would make anyone want an out... you'd think, once the disorientation of landing at a nidokings feet, axe non withstanding, wears off he'd be thrilled to be away from it all.

Welp thats it for my thoughts and suggestions.. hope it hekps?

Well the only reason that victini showed up was to make that dream about having him set up for everything to go his way, only for it all to be taken away. As for the peers taunting him, I'm not a legal expert. As for rudra adopting him, yes he did adopt him, except for the fact that this adoption is like Manfred Von Karma adopting Miles Edgeworth, or Madarame adopting Yusuke. He pretty much only adopted him for his buisness side, and turn him into what his parents would have hated most, he's also trying to prevent him from learning the truth about his parents. I like to imagine rudra as being an elon musk, stoic, almost buddha like figure in public, but he's more like mara deep down(that is he's like the devil deep down) with a real holier than thou attitude. The reason he's not thrilled yet is that he's dealing with some stockholm syndrome from his time earlier, and I wanted to show him gradually coming to like it. I also had his partner be a Delta Bulbasaur(from pokemon insurgence: https://wiki.p-insurgence.com/Delta_Pokémon, he was basically raised to believe that work life balance/having an imagination makes you poor and working nonstop is the only way to have value .I consider using fakemon in a fanfic to be ok as long as they come from a pre existing fan game, because to me it's like how certain mega man fan games use robot masters from other fan games, such as megaman rock and roll and make a good megaman level. ), to represent what he wants to protect deep down. Another issue I'm having is that I'm not sure how to set up the mystery dungeons in this medium, I can't decide on a good way to narrate over mystery dungeons. This one is a pressing question.

Though him being raised to believe that working nonstop and basically making his life his personality until he gets those pokemon plushies could make for a start of those dream world starting up again, and i made it feel out of character on purpose. He's starting to rediscover his inner child if you know what i mean.

Woah, that’s one story I can relate to! I’m also into math and computer science, even past my years of “working on math for fun only”.

Alright, enough of me; let’s talk about world building. Leaving aside the most basic stuff (how it can “make sense”, “be balanced”, “right pacing”, among others), a development that hits hard does not follow a set formula. But there are so, so many ways of leaving a profound impact on the reader, like:

  • Cohesive themes — threads that tie your whole story together (for example, Alexander’s prior math knowledge allows him to unlock a secret, an artifact, or even a meaning);
  • Buildup towards emotional climax — when all the events within the tale drive the main character into an emotional confrontation with self (for example, another Pokémon rivals Alexander’s knowledge or is seemingly always a step ahead, forcing him to confront his own beliefs and adapt);
  • “The message” — a recurring sentence that captures a whole meaning (for example, Victini’s words, “if you believe Good things are going to happen, YOU’RE A NAIVE FOOL”, come back to bite Alexander later on);
  • Character development (my personal favorite) — the world building allows the characters to evolve and make up for their mistakes (for example, at some point, Alexander starts questioning his belief that he can change things for the good; meanwhile, Victini — or another antagonistic Pokémon — finds itself in a tight spot, forced to depend upon the optimism that once guided Alexander);
  • You could add things like major turning points, plot twists, character dynamics, redemption… and the list goes on.

But really, a world building that hits hard is about having a concept, an idea of how the story will leave its mark. It’s not going to be a one-liner that kills it, but rather the combination of lines, actions, plot, themes…

..and the list goes on.
