Nip whipped around at the sound of commotion. Other than the sudden burst of razor-sharp leaves from Jaro's arms, he hadn't seen what happened. Only the aftermath. The fur on the back of his neck pricked, and he shifted into a defensive pose.

Nate kept most of his attention on the group down by the water, sprinting doggedly through the sand. It was loose and uneven far up on the beach, blown into irregular piles, and it was also an absolute bitch to slog through when you had tiny fucking legs. So far so good, though. Nobody was paying any attention.

Out of nowhere there was a flash of green light, coming improbably from the bushes to his right--shit, had he completely missed someone hiding there?--and the warm crackle of what could only be infinity energy, hovering dangerously above his head.

But it stayed there, hovering, and Nate cautiously cracked an eye that had been closed in a flinch to take in, what? A leaf blade? Smeargle paw? Nate couldn't see whatever had tried to stab him, but it had definitely come out of the bushes, and it definitely wasn't friendly. Without even thinking, he blasted a water gun in the direction he thought the leaf blade had come from.

As soon as Jaro felt the power of the move channel through him, he whirled around on the sand to face the threat. He had no idea what move he'd just used, but it didn't launch any sort of projectile, so he felt confident that it was some sort of close range attack. "Attack incoming! Some sort of melee grass thing!" Jaro yelled, thinking the time for acting natural had passed. He squinted at the bushes, and attempted to ready a Sweet Kiss, only to find that copying that last attack had drained quite a bit from him...

"Mudkip, are you okay?! Don't just stand around there!" Cynthian said, finally thawed out of his frozen state of mind when Maple mentioned they were being watched.

The Water Gun connected, yet it had stopped in open air. The way it splashed off of something--apparently the actual attack did next to nothing in terms of damage--it was an angular face, and a tall creature at that. It also splashed off of something much smaller flying near this first attacker's head. Two entities. And the larger one was bipedal and stepped back. A soft, blue glow came from the creature's chest, about four feet in the air.

"Be careful," Maple said. "It's about to--"

And then it disappeared.

And then something blue glowed in front of Maple, and the green, swirling light of an Energy Ball up against her chest. It fired without hesitation, sending Maple flying across the water, skipping several times more than the rock she had thrown.

Several footprints had appeared in the sand in an instantaneous line toward Maple, stopping just in front of where she had once stood. Ocean mist gave off the outline of a Sceptile. He exhaled once. A thin haze of black smoke fell toward the sand.

"W-what in the world is going on?! Miss Maple?!" Cynthian's heart pounded in his chest, and he quickly staggered back closer to his teammates.

Star's tears, this creature moved fast! And the outline of it was just barely visible. Maybe by looking at the footprints it was making, Jaro could target an attack? He put the tip of his arms to his lips and blew a Sweet Kiss at where the footprints seemed to be headed next.

It was fast. Or... they were fast? There was a distinct lack of fliers among the people assembled, but Necrozma could float. So float he did. Hovering up to ensure nobody could go skyward. He pointed his right arm forward, ready to strike with Confusion if necessary.

Nip whipped his head around, watching Maple sail out to sea before turning back to look at the enemy, frozen in place. Or at least, where he suspected the invisible enemy was. It knocked Maple flying like that? With just one strike?! What hope did he have of fighting this enemy, if that was the case? He needed to flee. They all needed to run. And yet, could they outrun this sceptile?

Stiff and frozen in place, Nip felt ice condensing on his fur. He was the fastest here, right? If anyone could outrun this... thing, it was him. Maybe he could draw it's attention, even if only for a moment. Long enough for the others to get a head start. Or for Maple to get back.

"Everyone scatter!" Nip shouted before hurling shards of ice in the direction of the black mist. Then he turned and darted backwards, hoping to put distance between himself and it before turning to throw another more shards.

Nate got only the briefest look at his attackers when the water splashed against them. Two of them, one big, one airborne. He faintly registered someone yelling, maybe for him? But the sound was too far off and he had slightly more pressing concerns, like the fact that something tore past him like a freight train and another grass attack sent the smeargle bouncing like a fucking beach ball. Given that the she was at least a champion-level fighter, that was probably bad news for everybody who'd been hanging around down by the water.

That was going to have to be their problem for the moment. There had been two attackers, and Nate wasn't about to turn his back if the other was still hanging around. His heart was pounding in his ears and every adrenaline-edged second stretched unbearably. Still the world was moving too fast for Nate to piece together a complete thought, but he knew on an instinctive level that he had to tag the flier with something, get a handle on where it actually was, before anything else. "Scared, huh?" he yelled, dragging his tail through the sand to spray a mud-slap into the air where he thought he'd seen something flying. "Come on, fucker! Let's dance!"

“... tch.” Necrozma saw where the other attacks were going. He fired pink psychic rings down. If they couldn’t strike true, perhaps they could restrain?

"I'll help too!" Cynthian swung his flowers forward and fired a cone of Stun Spore at the direction everyone else was attacking.

Cabot gasped as Maple was sent flying. She'd had proven to be the strongest fighter around here, yet that invisible Sceptile had sent here flying like it was nothing! The Cranidos noticed the shadowy haze coming from where he presumed the Sceptile's mouth was. Did this mean he was also possessed by one of those strange slug creatures?

As soon as he saw Cynthian firing a Stun Spore towards the Sceptile, he did his best to take advantage of it and charged forward with a Zen Headbutt, intending to hit the Sceptile the moment it got paralyzed.

"Ah!"

Nate had hit something, but it was hard to tell exactly what at first. Small, but with a big head for its body, vaguely onion shaped. It flitted around blindly and into the open, trying to wipe off the mud that had presumably gotten in its eyes--a lucky strike for sure.

Meanwhile, Nip's distraction had worked. Sceptile stomped after him, swiping the shards away with ease to make a dash for the assaulting Sneasel. He opened with a slash at an awkward angle, which made for an easy dodge on reflex. But that left Nip prone in the air against an opponent seemingly faster than his very breathing.

But the attack was slow. Too slow--Stun Spore's effect was immediate, but not strong enough to halt Sceptile completely. Necrozma's Confusion followed, but it, too, didn't do much to Sceptile. Cabot's attack, while it connected, did only a little more than the others, shoving him a few inches forward in the sand.

"Wait, wait!" the tiny, flying creature begged.

Then, he raised his arm again, forming a Leaf Blade threateningly, and slashed down toward Nip. Whether he dodged or not, it didn't matter--there was a sudden boom when Maple's fist, coated in a golden energy, lunged through a portal and slammed into Sceptile's chest. The shockwave from the impact bent the light around the impact site.

He coughed spittle and dark haze, staggering back several paces. With a wobble, he collapsed to one knee at the same time that Maple, soaked in saltwater, emerged from the portal completely. Her chest was still smoldering from the Energy Ball, though she didn't seem bothered.

Necrozma and Nip both readied a second volley, but Maple raised a paw. "Stop," she said. "He isn't trying to kill you."

Sceptile wheezed, the invisibility wearing off for both him and the flying Pokemon--which turned out to be some strange, pink creature with an onion-like head and tiny wings.

Maple raised her paw. "When he tried to strike Mudkip," she said, showing her unblemished paw to the others, "he used a dull edge."

"Who are you and why are you attacking us?!" Cynthian asked while partially hidden behind the sand mound Necrozma had made earlier.

The mud-slap flew true and actually hit something, but Nate's elation at its success turned to icy shock when he registered what it was he'd hit. The mud spatters outlined a bulbous head and tiny body, and now that he was thinking of it, was that the faint hum-flit of insect wings? No. That's fucking impossible.

But the invisibility dissipated a moment later and yes, in fact, it actually was. Unmistakably. Celebi.

Nate stood frozen, not even registering whatever was going on with the sceptie, what Celebi--fucking Celebi was saying. This obviously wasn't the right Celebi, couldn't possibly have been unless the universe was playing an even shittier joke on him than he could even imagine, hell, it was fucking pink for whatever fucking reason, but none of that mattered. Celebi. Celebi. After all the time spent searching, after years, literal years paying the price for some other shithead's stupid decisions, not even a month in this shitty dimension and its Celebi comes right the fuck up and fucking attacks him. Of course that's what would happen.

Anger rose up hot within him, so his limbs shook, so a dread rushing filled his ears and he could. Yes, of course Celebi would decide to show itself exactly when it didn't matter any more. Of course the universe would have to get that last taunt in. Why would it be any different here? Why would it ever be any different? Of course this was how it was always going to be, forever, for the rest of his entire shitty fucking life. "Why can't you just--leave me--the fuck--alone?!" Nate screamed, and launched the most powerful water gun he could muster at the hateful thing.

The devastating beam of water smashed into Celebi's face, tearing and ripping away the mud that had clung to it. She screamed in surprise and shielded herself, finally drifting away and out from the beam. "Ow, ow! Stop that! We just met! I promise, I'm not stalking you!" She weaved left and right blindly in case he was still trying to strike.

Sceptile panted, the wind completely knocked out of him, but his eyes were trained on Maple.

The Smeargle held her paws forward disarmingly. "I'm not here to fight," she said, "and it looks like you only have an interest in me, not these ones. Why are you here? Who..." She stared for a while longer, then looked at Celebi, and then at Sceptile again. There was a string around his neck, which had a small, blue gear resting on his chest. It glowed a soft cyan.

"...So that is why you felt like an interloper," Maple stated. "You're Grovyle. Well... Sceptile, now. Congratulations on your ev--"

"Your energy pattern isn't normal," Sceptile said. "You... you're the one destroying this world."

His voice was distorted, and a great shadow loomed behind him, a twisted projection of Sceptile's spirit.

"W-wait, wait! Balm, please, not so hasty! She doesn't want to fight, and she took you down in one hit!" Celebi sped toward him. Balm looked like he was about to yell at her, but when Celebi touched his shoulder, the shadow that had loomed behind him evaporated in seconds.

Balm's body language instantly loosened and he rubbed his head. "I... I'm sorry. I'm sorry," he said, looking up at Maple. There was still an air of suspicion in his voice, much like the thin black haze that came from his mouth with every word. "I've been very stressed ever since I arrived here, and it must have... gotten to me. I'm sorry, Cepa."

Cepa, the Celebi, stared at Balm with concern, like she thought it wasn't mere stress... yet she couldn't tell what it really was.

Something seemed familiar about the Sceptile and especially the pink onion. It finally clicked when Maple mentioned Grovyle. "Wait, I know you two! Well, some mon like you in my world. You're Grovyle and Celebi from the stories!"

It was then that he noticed the twisted projection. "D-did anyone else see that thing? Am I the only one who saw that thing?" Cynthian asked in a hushed voice, his face pale.

"I saw it too," Cabot said to Cynthian, before stepping forward towards Balm and Cepa. "I'm not sure who you are exactly, but if what I've heard from Truffle is right, your Sceptile friend may be infected by some strange slug creature."
