Your footsteps echo eerily off the stone walls surrounding you. With each step, a few specks of dirt fall from the low ceiling. Torches in earthen sconces line the walls. Their flamelight flickers, causing your shadow to multiply and dance across the stonework, forming a ghastly troupe.
How did you get here, anyway? You could have sworn you were just minding your business—but that felt so long ago, as if someone removed part of your memory.
Cackles of raspy laughter can dimly be heard down the corridor. Your heart races—should you follow it? Or do you go back?
You keep going. If someone laughs, then you’re not alone in this strange place, and that’s a good thing—
Right?
Eventually the corridor opens to a wide rectangular room, all built of the same sandstone. A circular pit sits in the center of the room, a fire crackling within. In the light of the fire, you see the outline of a scrawny young man with a mane of white hair.
The young man turns—he can hardly be older than sixteen. But there’s something about his large, slanted eyes that portray a deep knowledge and wisdom beyond his years.
He smiles as you approach and a chill runs down your spine. There’s nothing friendly about that smile. In the light of the fire, you see something golden glint from the opening in his button-up shirt.
“I thought you might show up soon,” he growls with his soft English accent. “Wondering where you are, I expect? The world of memory can be a confusing place to wander about—particularly when the memories you explore are not your own.”
He glances over his shoulder and you see another doorway behind him. The moon hangs in a star-speckled sky like a floating crystal orb. A chill wind blows through the entryway, biting you to the bone and sending sparks flying from the fire.
“Yes, many people have disappeared lately,” the young man says nonchalantly. “And others go on after them in an attempt to rescue those who are lost.” He turns his dark brown eyes to you—eyes that seem to pierce your exterior and peer directly into your soul. You shudder.
He smiles again, showcasing his teeth—you notice his fangs look unusually large.
“What say you?” he asks. “Will you play as well?”

Welcome to the third Thousand Roads Mafia game! Whether you want to try your hand at something new or you're a well-seasoned player, all are invited to join in the fun!
How do we play?
This game will be roleplay-optional. What does that mean? It means you choose or create a character (your own or someone else's) and if you would enjoy pretending to be your character, reasoning and reacting to the situation in the same way that they would, then please feel free to post in-character as much as you'd like! However, to indicate that you're posting in-character, please surround any in-character text in double square brackets, [[like this]]. You are also welcome to include as much out-of-character straight strategizing and discussion in your posts as you'd like. If you'd prefer to play without RPing at all, that's totally fine! Your character choice will be used to flavor your role but have no other impact on the game.
Each character will be randomly assigned to one of two teams. Either you'll become part of the mafia, working to take control of the board by eliminating your opponents, or you'll become one of the innocent, working to discover and jail the members of the mafia before they can take over your home.
If you haven't played mafia before, it works like this:
1. Players are split into either mafia or innocent factions. The mafia know who belongs on their team, and they may freely communicate with each other outside of the game thread. The innocents do not know the alignments of any of the other players, and they can interact only by posting in the game thread at designated times.
2. The game proceeds in a series of "day" phases and "night" phases.
During the day, all players are "awake" and able to post in the game thread. This is the time when the innocents need to discuss who they think the mafia are, based on other players' posts or what they believe may have happened at night. Ultimately this leads to players voting on which person should be sent to jail. If the jailed player turns out to have been a member of the mafia, the innocents are one step closer to winning--but if they guess wrong, they'll only help the mafia in their quest to eliminate the innocents.
At night, the mafia choose one player to make disappear. They're free to talk with each other, plan, and strategize, but the innocent players cannot communicate. However, some innocent players may have a special ability that they can use during the night.
3. The game continues until either the mafia make up the majority of remaining players (meaning that they can control all day-votes) or the innocents successfully jail all of the mafia.
Please feel free to ask any questions you might have either here in the thread or by private message!
This game will NOT be a continuation of the previous Mafia games hosted here. So if you see a character that was in previous games, do not use knowledge from the previous games to make assumptions about their alignment or abilities. Alignments and roles will be randomly assigned. In a similar vein, I may not use all of the roles from previous games of Mafia, and I may make up a unique role or two!
In this game, each phase of "day" and "night" will last 48 hours.
Right now we're in the sign-up phase. If you'd like to play, post in this thread with the character you want to use. This can be one of your own fanfic characters or a character from someone else's story, but if you'd like to use another person's character please get their permission first. Please include some basic information about your character: name, species, appearance, basic personality traits, and anything else you'd like your fellow players to know.
Sign-ups are open until midnight UTC on Thursday, October 8. I'll get everything set up, and then the game will begin Friday, October 9th.
