Fifth Anniversary Drabble Bingo

For the 2024 TR anniversary bingo card I decided to go for a four corners win! Thank you @windskull for the prompts! These are all exactly 100 words, calculated by Scrivener (which considers hyphenated words as a single word)

Cynthia teeters on the brink of R202. This isn’t her first trip alone with her Pokémon, but it is her first day as Rowan’s apprentice, out on a bona-fide journey. Her new pokédex is a bulky, red plastic thing, with a screen she has to cover with her hand to see in broad daylight. The first Pokémon it had registered was a gible; Zora’s toothy grin is distorted into a handful of pixels, which Cynthia smiles back at all the same.
Up ahead is Jubilife City, the birthplace of Sinnohan Modern History— Cynthia had always been preferential to Ancient History.

Mount Coronet is brutal at the best of times. Landslips, cave-ins, and avalanches are all typical occurrences, which is on top of the already gruelling terrain. Without such luxuries as satellite phones, way-stations, and emergency helicopter rescues, traversing it is less of a hike and more of an odyssey. Come winter, it’ll be a death sentence.
Cynthia and Dawn have travelled to its peak before, and Luculia is reminded once again that she has not. But the rift hanging above it like a crown is a constant reminder of the journey they’ll need to take soon, at their inevitable end.

Hisui. A land of untamed wilderness and treasures untold, for those brave enough to seek them.
Felipe’s studies at Mesagoza’s Uva Academy had taught him the value of chasing the unknown, for the scientific discoveries he alone can uncover. However, the culture in Paldea is… competitive. Everybody wants a seat at that violet table, and students will cut each other’s throats for a better score. Hisui, on the other hand, is a mine of neglected opportunity— and he’ll be the one to seize it.
And when he returns to his seat at that violet table, they’ll all see it too.

Something happened on that night. When the blizzard choked out our last gasps of air and the only shelter was a forbidden monument to a forgotten colossus— what came out of that temple was not the same thing that went in.
I know that you know something I don’t, but I understand why you can’t tell me. Maybe I don’t want to know. Whatever happened… I’m just glad I have you. I’m glad you stayed with me, and held my hand through it all. I’m glad you were there when I woke up. I’m glad you’re here with me now.

Hi! Here for the itty bitty mini review blitz! 100 word short stories is a cute idea. I'm gonna divide this review into parts for each of them.

Part 1 - The first day of a journey

Omg it's teeny tiny Cynthia on the first day of a Pokemon journey. I love the touch of the bulky old fashioned Pokedex. And the bit about Gible's pixelated smile. Cynthia's gonna learn a LOT about ancient history before long.

Part 2 - Hiking the mountains

Wow yeah traversing Mt. Coronet is probably ROUGH especially in Hisui with no modern accommodations. I'm reminded of a video talking about people trying to climb Everest without oxygen support. Also I love the description of the big fuckoff spacetime portal as a "crown", it's so fitting. .

Part 3 - Treasure Hunt

Ah, knew Paldea would play into this one somehow. I don't know who this person is but they have very "I'LL SHOW YOU, I'LL SHOW YOU ALL" energy. Will they? I have no idea. Love the description of the cutthroat student culture too.

Part 4 - Lost in the woods

This one was probably my favorite. The description of the beast and the words of affirmation after are just so haunting, it gets your mind racing at the possibilities of just what, exactly, happened here, in this woods, in this temple.

These were all really nice! Thanks for posting!

These are really great! Props for keeping everything to 100 words, and for going for all four corners!

The last two, in particular, are super intriguing. Not sure whether Felipe's eventually going to intersect with the Way Out canon somehow, but this is a fun tease either way. Whatever he's planning, I'm sure it can only end well! The final drabble, meanwhile, has such a wonderful spooky atmosphere--What came out of that temple was not the same thing that went in. It's understated but impactful, and the choice of framing it all as one character addressing another heightens the intrigue and brings it some nice emotional depth.

All in all, though, my favorite might be the first drabble! You captured the sense of anticipation of setting out on a new journey really well, and it's always fun seeing an accomplished character like Cynthia way back before they made a name for themselves.

Here is my finished bingo card for the 2025 TR anniversary! I found it a little tricky to get the prompts I wanted to do most in a neat row, and consequently fell short of a full blackout by 3. I had fun with them though, and thank you to @Negrek for the prompts! These are all exactly 100 words as according to wordcounter.net.

Lab-grown Mega stones will revolutionise the world, they say. Gone are the days of scarcity; the once priceless stones will be free to all. Diancie isn’t so sure. She knows a thing or two about creating stones— diamonds that otherwise take millions of years to form can coalesce in her palms. She has also learned that such an ability invites danger, because many people are interested in keeping things scarce.

Lab-grown diamonds, lab-grown stones, will they make a difference? There is only one pearl that belongs to her, the coveted Diancite, and only one trainer who could ever wield it.

Lumiose City is known across the world as the City of Lights. Its citizens spend their days in a dreamy haze, and come alive at night when the power turns on. But there are places where the shadows grow tall, where the glowing panopticon at its centre cannot reach.

It’s in these shadows that the strongest trainers come out to play. In the dark, they don’t have to play nice, and they don’t have to play fair.
You might recognise some of their faces, if you could see them— yet here in the shadows, they’re just another trainer like you.

The subheading of the magazine article reads: Diantha — How Kalos’ shining star was born.

It’s a pleasant puff piece, praising her natural talent and her eye for opportunity, and shrewdly omits her parent’s connections to influential producers. Kalos’ home grown sweetheart, nurtured on postmodernism and galettes. She shines so brightly that she makes Prism Tower look dull, it says.

It’s just as much a condemnation. A star’s life ends one of only two ways; it either burns out, or it implodes on itself so spectacularly that it takes everything around it down with it, and leaves a black hole behind.

Upon the famous balcony of Parfum Palace, fireworks launch into the night sky just for them. It’s a beautiful display. The wailing lights pop and then sizzle as they fall, sometimes bursting with glorious aplomb and sometimes crackling and dazzling like sparklers. Down in the courtyard below, spectators gasp and coo. She feels a little like the royalty who would have lived here, once.

A finger brushes against hers, shockingly warm compared to the cold metal banister beneath her palms. Shauna’s smile is warmer again, aimed directly at her. Serena looks back to the sky.

She shouldn’t read into it.

She has lived for thousands of years, through no fault of her own.

She will know when it’s time to come home— she thinks. She has to believe that’s true; she has to believe that something will change, and that she will know when it does.

She knows her friend is remorseful, and she knows he wants to see her again just as much as she wants to see him. But she cannot return, will not return, until he understands what it means to be alive.

She has lived for thousands of years, and she will live for thousands more.

“Come on, it’s just like ice skating.”
“It’s nothing like ice skating.”
“When was the last time you went ice skating?” Luculia teases, and Cynthia shoots her a mock scowl. She’s a natural at most everything she tries, but apparently roller skating is the exception.
“It’s easy for you because you’re short. Lower centre of gravity.”
“I’m not short, you’re just stupidly tall,” Luculia grins. “Here, you can hold my hand if you want.”
Cynthia narrows her eye, but she’s not one to pass up an opportunity.

(They end up crashing a few times, but that’s neither here nor there.)

Sorry for the delay, I had a busy week.

I read all the drabbles and found them really interesting, so I wanted to do some short comments for each of them!

The First Day of A Journey

... Somehow, the fact that this is was a drabble about *the Cynthia* did not hit me until the end, which made for a really interesting experience lol
I guess that's the advantage of an older regional professor, of course he must have seen Cynthia depart on her journey!
I love the mention of the Pokédex being a bulky blocky device, and the little mention of the Pokedex showing the sprites, reminded me a bit of the manga.

Hiking The Mountains

I don't know who Luculia is in this, but I liked the description of Mount Coronet in this. It's Sinnoh's most iconic landmark and I think that it's very interesting that the most dangerous/mysterious place is also ironically the most traversed (at least the lower levels) because you literally have to pass through it to cross the region.

Treasure Hunt
Ooh, I really liked how you connected this theme to Hisui by making use of the Academy's tradition!
Actually the Academy being that old makes for some incredibly interesting potential connection with characters from all over the place.
Also love the description of the extremely competitive student environment.

Lost in the Woods
Really creepy vibe here, loved the description of the "thing" that went into the temple. I'm assuming the temple is one devoted to some legendary or other (Giratina?). It's all so vague but that's what makes it so effective. Great two sentence horror vibes.

Diancite
Loved the idea of using Diance to create mega stones, and especially that to her pretty much all stone except her own are worthless. Maybe if there is one gem that she can't create it's that one.

Nighttime battle
Loved this one, a ZA drabble!! Love the contrast of the image of Lumiose at day and night

Diantha
Really liked the comparison between Diantha as a "star" and the only two ways actual stars can end up, it was a really clever comparison!

Parfum Palace
I somewhat expected the drabble to be about the firework scene, and it worked out quite well. I especially liked how you managed to cramp so much description in just 100 words!

Eternal Flower Floette
I like this little glimpse in how Floette must have felt in those 3000 years. The focus is usually on AZ, but the fact that Floette immediately returns as soon as he learns his lesson shows that she was actually always nearby, waiting for him and ready to do so for as long as it took. It's sweet.

Roller Skates
.... I'll have to admit, I had completely forgot that the roller skates were even a thing in XY. I'm sadly not familiar with who Luculia is, but it was still a nice little scene, especially the part at the end!
