Notes

(The last fanfiction I wrote in 2023 for the series "Canon Rewrites from Team Rocket Episodes")

This fanfiction is inspired by the Pokémon episode where Meowth briefly considers being a good guy and helps Timmy. However, the original episode missed the opportunity to explore how it would shape Meowth’s friendship with his partners. Additionally, when his true identity was revealed to Timmy, he simply ran away with little explanation and character development. Finally, the boy’s compassion towards him felt like an accessory to the plot rather than an integral part of it.

Following those ideas, this fanfiction aims to define the previous aspects in depth.

It was Kids Day, and a teacher named Reiko from a kindergarten wanted to do something special for her students. Ash, his Pikachu, Misty, and Brock, who happened to be walking by, accepted to let the children play with the trainers' Pokémon. Nearly everyone was excited to touch the Pokémon, except for one boy named Timmy, who only wanted to be with a Meowth that had once saved him from a Beedrill.

With Ash and his friends nearby, Jessie, James, and Meowth began a magical attempt to steal Pikachu. However, an accident left them with Timmy instead, a boy who cried for Meowth’s help!

Acknowledging Timmy’s desire for a Meowth, Jessie, James, and Meowth plotted a plan to help Timmy, as a part of Kids’ day spirit. Their plan was to introduce Meowth as the hero who would ‘defeat’ Jessie and James, becoming Timmy’s best friend.

A rare instance when Team Rocket’s plan worked. Timmy was overjoyed to see Meowth, and they went back to the kindergarten together in no time, while Jessie and James secretly following them.

As Timmy and Meowth arrived, Ash, Misty, Brock, and the other children were relieved to see the boy, their eyes widened.

"Timmy, are you alright?" asked Ash, his voice filled with worry.

"Yeah, how did you escape from them?" added Misty, putting a hand on Timmy's shoulder.

"Meowth came to my rescue, just like he did before." Timmy quickly explained, moving his hand towards a sweating Meowth at his side. Ash and his friends looked at each other, slightly narrowing their eyes.

Brock, being the observant one, leaned in. "Isn't that the same Meowth from Team Rocket?" He asked, eyeing Meowth cautiously.

Meowth's heart sank. He tried his best to look calm and collected, but his sweating became even more apparent than before.

Timmy, however, came to Meowth's defense. "No, it's not! This Meowth is different. He saved me from the Beedrill when I played in the forest!"

Ash, Misty, and Brock exchanged skeptical glances, but Timmy's unwavering faith in his rescuer made Meowth’s heart slow down.

At that moment, the children excitedly gathered around to play with Meowth, leaving him grateful. “Me-owth.” He cautiously said. He was enjoying being the children’s center of attention, letting them play with him.

Meanwhile, Ash, Misty, and Brock watched from a distance as the children played with Meowth. Misty whispered to the group, “Do you also have the sensation that the Meowth is the same one from Team Rocket?"

Brock nodded. "It's definitely possible. Meowth might be helping Team Rocket pull off another one of their schemes."

Ash rubbed his chin, deep in thought. "But why would Meowth help Timmy if it's really part of Team Rocket?"

As they were thinking about it, Pikachu suddenly interrupted their thoughts. “Pika-pi!” Its ears were going up and down in a quick succession as Pikachu urged them to follow.

"Pikachu, what is it?" Ash asked as he and his friends followed Pikachu.

••••••••••

Jessie and James crouched down behind a large plant at the entrance of the school, watching Meowth play with the children through their binoculars.

Jessie sighed heavily, "This is all our fault! We let him go along with this, and now he's never going to come back to us!"

James nodded, a tear falling through his cheek. "We have to just accept it. He's found a new life here, and he's happy."

“This didn’t have to happen!” Jessie interjected. “If we had just noticed it before, Meowth would’ve never left us hanging!”

”We can’t force him back now.” James argued. “He’s our friend, no matter what he wants for life.”

Jessie sighed in forfeit. “Maybe…”

Just then, James accidentally dropped his binoculars, and they clattered to the ground. Jessie winced, "James, be more careful! We don't want to be seen!"

James quickly picked up the binoculars with a worried sigh.

”We shouldn’t stay here for any longer.” Jessie advised, already walking away.

James nodded, and the duo slowly retreated to the nearby woods. As they went on their way, James looked back at the school one last time, sighing before keeping up his walking pace.

Jessie and James soon sat on the grass near a tree, far enough from the school, looking at each other in silence. Jessie soon broke it, "What are we going to do now, James? We can't go back to the boss without Meowth!"

James looked down. "I know, Jessie. But what if Meowth wants to stay with that kid? We can't just invade that school and take him with us!"

Jessie hesitated before nodding. "Then, we'll just have to come up with a new plan."

As they talked, they suddenly heard rustling in the bushes nearby. They peeked through the leaves and saw a Pikachu followed by Ash, Misty, and Brock. They gasped in surprise as their enemies stopped running and stood in front of them.

"What are you guys doing here?" James asked, ceasing his tears.

Misty folded her arms. "That’s what we want to know from you! And where's your Meowth?"

Jessie mimicked Misty’s posture and replied, "That's none of your business! We don't have to explain ourselves to you!"

Brock raised an eyebrow and said, "You guys are acting suspicious. What are you up to?"

Jessie glared at them and retorted, "We don't have to answer to you! Now leave us alone!"

Close to Ash and his friends, Pikachu narrowed its eyes even further.

However, Ash took a step forward, looking at Jessie and James. "Hey, if you're going through something tough, we can help you. Just tell us what's going on," he said, his voice full of sincerity.

Pikachu jumped to Ash’s shoulder. “Pika?” It pronounced, raising an eyebrow.

Misty still looked skeptical. "I don't trust them. They're always up to no good!" she muttered.

Jessie glared at Misty, her eyes flashing with anger. "Why would you? Your twerpy attitude never changes!" she snapped.

James put a hand on Jessie's shoulder. "Maybe it wouldn't hurt to tell them. The twerp seems genuine." he said, his voice lower than usual.

Jessie hesitated for a moment before finally nodding her head, although she still glared at Misty. "Fine. We'll tell you," she said, her tone still defensive.

Ash and his friends, especially a crossed-arms Misty, were looking attentively at Jessie and James, listening to their words.

As Jessie looked hesitant to start telling the story, James took the lead. "It's a long story," he said, "but summarizing, our friend Meowth took a short license away from Team Rocket to live with the children because we…we came up with a plan for him to act like the Meowth that once saved Timmy."

Ash and his friends listened intently. Misty spoke up, "But why would you do that? Why would you help Timmy?"

James sighed, his voice noticeably lower, although still audible. “Because it’s Kids’ day, and we just wanted to help him achieve his dream, but we couldn’t predict that doing it would make Meowth want to live with the children from the school!”

Jessie looked at James, then turned to Ash and his friends. "We know you probably don't believe us, but it's true. Meowth is our friend, and we wanted to stay together with him, but we also want him to be happy with what he chooses to do."

Brock spoke up, "I understand. You care about Meowth, and you want what's best for him."

"Jessie and James, I think it's time for you to say goodbye to Meowth," Ash spoke up. "And we're here to encourage you to do it."

Jessie and James looked at each other in surprise. Before they could say anything, Ash continued, "We may be enemies, but we're still all Pokémon trainers. And we know how important it is to care for and support our Pokémon, even when things don't go as planned."

Misty hesitantly nodded in agreement, "Yeah, and we also know how hard it is to say goodbye to a Pokémon that you care about."

Jessie and James were touched by their words and nodded in agreement. "Thank you," James said, his voice cracking with emotion. "We really appreciate your help."

Jessie hesitated for a moment before speaking up. "I... I don't know what to say," she began, her voice softening slightly. "But thank you, I guess." She looked down at her feet, clearly uncomfortable with the situation. Her expression was guarded, but also grateful.

As they walked back to the kindergarten, there was a sense of awkwardness between Ash and his friends and Jessie and James. The young trainers clearly had put their differences aside with Team Rocket for the moment to help them say goodbye to Meowth, but they knew they were still their enemies.

They walked in silence for a while, their tension slowly dissipating as they neared the kindergarten. Ash, Misty, and Brock could still see the hesitance in Jessie’s and James’s eyes, though.

"Don't worry, guys," Ash said reassuringly. "We'll be there for you every step of the way."

From Ash’s shoulder, Pikachu smiled a bit. “Pikachu…!” It cheered hesitantly.

Misty nodded in agreement. "We're all in this together."

Brock chimed in, "Meowth may have been part of Team Rocket, but he's still your friend. And we know that friends are always there for each other, even if they need to part ways."

Jessie and James exchanged a nervous glance before he whispered to her. "I don't know if we can do this, Jess. Saying goodbye to Meowth is going to be tough."

Jessie placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "We have to, James. It's what's best for Meowth."

"But what if he doesn't understand?" James worriedly pondered. “What if he thinks we're abandoning him?"

"We'll make him understand," Jessie said firmly, slightly clenching her right fist. "And we'll let him know how much we love him."

Jessie and James donned some disguises from the first closet they saw and made their way to the kindergarten, with Ash and his friends following them in a distance.

As the duo walked through the yard, James couldn't help but feel a lump in his throat. "This is going to be harder than I thought," he muttered.

But Jessie put a hand on his arm and gave him a small smile. "We can do this, James. For Meowth."
It was lunch time in the kindergarten. The school lunchroom was bustling with the chatter and laughter of children as they ate their lunches. The room was filled with medium-sized tables, each with four chairs for the kids to sit in. Most of the tables were occupied, with groups of four or three children sitting together and enjoying their meals.

However, there was one table that stood out from the rest. It was the smallest table in the room, with only two chairs that were being occupied by Timmy and Meowth. The cat-like Pokémon’s ears were perking up as he heard the children chatting. He could tell that they were talking about random topics, but the noise was too much to make out the details. He noticed that the initial excitement of them seeing him was starting to wear off, and some of the children were turning their attention to their lunch, almost completely ignoring him.

On the other hand, Timmy was still fully interested on him. Meowth could sense the depth of his attachment to him, and it warmed his heart. He couldn't help but feel a bit guilty for deceiving the boy, but he also knew that he was doing the right thing helping him find happiness. Meowth decided to give Timmy his full attention, purring contentedly as the boy looked at him with gratitude in his eyes.

"I'm so glad you're my friend, Meowth. I don't know what I would do without you," he said, patting Meowth's head gently. “Do you remember the day when the Beedrill chased me in the forest? I was so scared, and I thought I was going to get stung. But then, you came to my rescue and scared it away. You're so brave, Meowth! Thank you for protecting me!" Timmy said, hugging Meowth tightly.

Meowth couldn't help but feel guilty as Timmy continued to express his gratitude towards him. The memories of deceiving the boy and pretending to be a Pokémon he wasn't kept haunting him. He knew that revealing the truth would only cause pain and disappointment to Timmy, but the weight of the guilt was starting to become unbearable.

Despite this, Meowth put on a brave face and hugged Timmy back, feeling a sense of warmth and love towards the boy. "Meowth, Meowth.” Meowth started talking in Pokémon language, expressing his own gratitude towards Timmy for giving him a sense of purpose and belonging. Timmy couldn't understand the words, but he felt the sincerity in Meowth's voice and returned the hug with equal affection. For a moment, everything felt perfect, and Meowth couldn't help but wonder if this was all worth the deception.

As Meowth and Timmy continued to enjoy each other's company, a sudden noise caught their attention. They both looked up and saw a group of children gathered around a table, excitedly watching a boy performing a "magic trick” with a coin, making it ‘disappear’ after a few gestures.

Timmy's eyes widened in amazement, and he turned to Meowth. "Wow, did you see that? He made the coin disappear!" he exclaimed, tugging on Meowth's fur to get his attention.

Meowth couldn't help but be a little interested in the trick as well. He had always been fascinated by the concept of magic, even if he didn't necessarily believe in it. He watched as the boy continued to perform more tricks with the coin, each one seemingly more impossible than the last.

Meanwhile, Timmy began to fidget in his seat. He turned to Meowth, who was still watching the magic trick with great interest. "Hey Meowth," Timmy whispered. "I need to go to the bathroom. Can you wait for me here?"

Meowth turned his head towards Timmy and gave a small nod. After he got up from the chair and quickly went to the bathroom, Meowth continued to watch the boy's magic tricks, occasionally turning his attention to the bathroom where Timmy went.

Suddenly, Meowth's ears perked up as he heard two voices coming from the nearby corner of the lunchroom. The children were too busy watching the boy's magic tricks to notice, but Meowth could hear the voices clearly. He listened closely and was surprised to hear the familiar voices of his friends Jessie and James.

Meowth felt a sudden pang of nostalgia as he heard his old friends' voices. It had been a long time since he had seen Jessie and James, and he immediately noticed that he had missed them more than he cared to admit. Meowth knew he shouldn't be talking to them in a kindergarten lunchroom, but he couldn't help feeling a pull towards his friends.

After a few moments of hesitation, Meowth made up his mind. He needed to talk to Jessie and James to catch up with them.

With a determined look on his face, Meowth slowly made his way towards the corner where Jessie and James were hiding. As he got closer, he could hear their voices more clearly, and he realized that they were discussing how they would find him.

Meowth cleared his throat, soon turning the corner. He saw Jessie and James disguised as two casual parents. After a moment of nervousness, he tried to get their attention. “Hey, guys!” He said, his voice more quiet than usual.

With sudden movements, Jessie and James turned around, their eyes widening. For a moment, they just stared at each other in silence, as if they couldn't believe what they were seeing.

"Meowth, is that you?" Jessie finally spoke up, her voice tinged with surprise.

"Yeah, it's me!" Meowth replied, his voice filled with emotion. "How did you guys get in here?"

Jessie smirked. "We had some unexpected help," she replied cryptically.

Meowth's curiosity was piqued, but before he could ask any more questions, James cut in, "Meowth, we need to talk to you right now. It's important."

Meowth hesitated for a moment, torn between his loyalty to his friends and his friendship with Timmy. But ultimately, he knew that Team Rocket always came first. "Okay, okay," he said, waving his paws. "Let's talk. But it's gotta be quick."

Jessie and James approached Meowth with a mix of excitement and hesitation. "We heard about your new life here and we just had to come and see for ourselves." She said.

James nodded in agreement. "Yes, we're here to say our goodbyes. We know you must be so happy here, Meowth. You've finally found a place where you belong."

Meowth looked between the two of them, his heart racing. "I-I didn't leave Team Rocket!" he stammered. "I just...had to make the boy happy-"

"No need to explain, Meowth," Jessie cut him off, a hint of sadness in her voice. "We can see how pleased you are here."

James nodded in agreement, tears falling from his eyes. "We know we've had our differences, b-but we'll always be grateful for the time we spent together."

Meowth felt a lump form in his throat. He wasn't sure what to say, but he didn't want to say goodbye to his old friends forever. However, before he could respond, Jessie and James gave him a tight hug, which lasted for a few seconds. When the trio let go of each other, Jessie and James walked away, leaving him standing there in the corridor, feeling more conflicted than ever.

As they were waking away, Meowth felt that he needed to argue back, to tell them that he still had a place in Team Rocket. But he knew that Jessie and James were set on their decision.

In the end, Meowth could only watch as his old friends bid him farewell and ran away from the kindergarten, with some tears forming in James’s eyes, while Jessie tried her best to convey an impassive exterior, but deep down, Meowth knew that she was crying inside. A sense of longing filled him as he watched them disappear around a corner. Meowth realized that he had truly been caught between two worlds.

As Meowth stood there, lost in thought, he suddenly noticed Timmy leaving the bathroom. The little boy made his way back to Meowth with a smile on his face, thanking him for waiting the boy. Meowth forced a smile in return, trying his best to hide the inner turmoil he was feeling.

Timmy looked up at Meowth with a concerned expression. "Is everything okay, Meowth?" he asked.

Meowth shifted uneasily as Timmy asked if everything was okay. He knew he couldn't keep hiding the truth from his friend any longer, but he also didn't want to hurt him. After a long pause, Meowth suddenly realized that he had to talk with Jessie and James, no matter what. He turned to Timmy, feeling a sudden urge to talk to him.

"I have to go, Timmy," Meowth said, his voice shaking slightly. "I'm sorry, but I've some things I need to take care of."

Timmy looked at Meowth, widening his eyes. He had never seen a Pokémon talk before. Before the boy could say anything, Meowth ran away, leaving Timmy standing alone in the lunchroom corridor. Timmy was left feeling perplexed and a little bit scared, wondering what was happening with his best friend.

As Meowth ran down the hallway, the Pokémon felt a mix of emotions. He was relieved to finally be able to talk to his old friends, Jessie and James, but he was also worried about what Timmy would think of him now. Meowth didn't want to lose his new friend, but the Pokémon knew that he had to do what was best for himself. He knew that he had to go after Jessie and James to fix the mess.

After standing still in shock for several seconds, Timmy realized above all that he had to take action. He knew his best friend was in trouble, and he couldn't just let him run away like that. Without a second thought, Timmy took off, running after Meowth, determined to find out what was going on and help him in any way he could. “Meowth, I’m coming for you!”
Ash, Misty, Brock, and Pikachu had been waiting in the school yard for a few seconds since they separated from Jessie and James. Their eyes were fixated on the kindergarten gateway, their hearts expectant for the return of their temporary allies.

However, the young trainers had something else in mind, regarding the Team Rocket trio. Why wouldn’t Ash and his friends, considering that Jessie, James, and Meowth were their longtime enemies, and for a more than valid reason? These villains would try to steal Pokémon at any given opportunity!

And yet, Jessie and James were bidding farewell to Meowth, something Ash and his friends could relate to. Especially him, who had sighed his own goodbye to Butterfree a month before.

"It's kind of strange, isn't it?” Ash began, furrowing his left brow. “I mean, Team Rocket's Meowth leaving to live with that kid."

Misty kept her arms crossed as usual, slightly softening her expression. “Yeah, but did you see how happy Timmy was? Meowth means a lot to him."

Brock leaned a bit closer to her. "True, Misty. But it's not just about the kid. It's also about Jessie and James. They're parting ways with Meowth."

Pikachu nodded, looking attentively at the school entrance. “Pika, Pika.”

"I never thought I'd say this, but I feel for them.” Ash said, scratching his own head. “They've been through a lot together.”

Misty nodded slightly, her arms uncrossing. "Even villains have a soft spot, I guess. Who would've thought they'd care so much about a Pokémon?"

"Friendship knows no boundaries, not even for Team Rocket.” Brock replied, subtly smiling. “Remember that they're saying goodbye to an old friend."

Ash grinned. “Yeah. Well, let's hope Meowth and Timmy can make each other happy. Team Rocket might not be so bad after all."

A chirp came from Pikachu’s mouth. “Pika chu!”

Silence followed for a few seconds. The trainers were eyeing the school entrance, with Ash and Misty occasionally glancing around for quick appreciations of the surrounding forest.

One of these looks was interrupted by a loud “Piika!”, with Pikachu hopping to Ash’s shoulder.

“Huh?!” Ash said as he and Misty looked at Pikachu and Brock, who was pointing his hand to the kindergarten entrance.

The trainers saw the two casual adults that served as Jessie’s and James’s disguises running towards the yard exit, where Ash and his friends awaited.

“Woah, that was quick!” Ash said, his eyes widening.

As the pair neared, their downcast expressions became apparent. Jessie wore a deep frown, while James’s eyes were filled with a few unshed tears.

When the distance separating them was roughly 15 feet, Ash took a slight step forward. “Are you alright?- I mean, did Meowth accept your goodbye well?”

Jessie and James kept walking towards the nearby forest as she crossed her arms. “Well enough.” Jessie replied.

“Meowth had this sad look, like he understood everything.” James’s lips trembled as he spoke. “We told him it was for the best, that he would be happy there, but it still stings."

Ash and his friends followed the duo. “Change can be tough, but new possibilities arise from it.” Brock said, a soft smile forming on his lips. “Meowth gets a chance at a different kind of adventure, and you two, well, you might find new paths too."

Jessie and James nodded, still not looking at the young trainers. As the duo glanced at each other, though, they traded a smirk that Ash and his friends couldn’t see.

Meanwhile, Misty nodded as well, smiling. “Yeah, and I’m sure that you two will always hold Meowth in your hearts.”

By that moment, Jessie and James stopped walking, and so did Ash and his friends by consequence. The pair finally made eye contact with the trainers, giggling. “We know that, twerps.” Jessie began, smirking. “But enough of this sentimental moment!”

By Jessie’s side, James moved his hand to his pocket, picking up a Poké Ball. “Let’s go, Weezing, use Smokescreen!” He commanded, his eyes narrowing. The Poké Ball popped open, revealing his Weezing.

Ash and his friends gasped, although it was all they could do before Weezing bolted a black gas from its mouth, filling the entire place surrounding the young trainers in a matter of seconds.

Ash and his friends soon began coughing, their eyes closed due to the smoke. “Argh! Why are you…-“ Ash tried to say, but his coughing didn’t allow him to finish the phrase.

On his shoulder, Pikachu was gaping in horror, coughing as well. Not a few seconds passed before a red mechanical hand swooped it away from Ash. “Piikaa!”

A second later, the smoke began fading away, allowing Ash, Misty, and Brock to reopen their eyes. They saw Jessie and James preparing to run away, with him holding Pikachu inside a cage. “You had to break the truce, didn’t you?!” Misty complained, pointing towards the duo.

Jessie and James turned around to face their adversaries. “That calls for our motto, so prepare for trouble!” She said, smirking.

“To seize our lotto, make it double!” James continued, jumping.

Jessie grinned. “To protect our fame from jail!”

James pointed his arm forward in a dramatic fashion. “To unite all readers within our tale!”

Ash, Misty, Brock, and Pikachu tilted their heads, shrugging in confusion.

"To denounce the clichés of prophecy and love!” Jessie shouted, moving her right arm towards James.

He quickly took her hand and extended it to the air. “To extend our story to the world above!”

“Jessie, the gorgeous one!” She shouted, keeping her hand in the air.

“James, the handsome one!” He shouted as well.

“Team Rocket is lots of fun. We get some things wroong, but we keep rolling alooong!” Jessie and James exclaimed in unison.

While Ash and his friends were still tilting their heads and had their eyes widened, James looked around the ground frantically. “Our motto is incomplete without Meowth around.” He sighed, a tear drop forming in his eye.

Jessie frowned. “It doesn’t matter now! We have the twerp’s Pikachu, so let’s call it a run!” She declared, walking away.

James nodded, following her as he still held Pikachu’s cage.

Ash and his friends finally shifted their eyes from widened to narrowed. “No, you won’t get away!” Ash shouted, his hand moving towards his pocket. A second later, he was holding a Poké Ball. “Pidgeotto, let’s rescue Pikachu!"

As soon as Ash finished his speech, the Poké Ball he was holding popped open, revealing a bright light from which Pidgeotto materialized. The Pokémon chirped, extending its right wing towards Team Rocket.

“Pika-Pika!” Pikachu cheered, bouncing a bit from inside its cage.

Jessie’s and James’s hearts began beating faster in their chests. “Nuh-uh! Weezing, fill the air with smokescreen again!” He commanded.

Weezing quickly began expelling the black gas from its mouth.

“Pidgeotto, use your Gust to fend off the smoke!” Ash shouted, clenching his fist.

After another chirp, Pidgeotto began to rapidly flap its wings, clearing the gas in no time. The attack affected Weezing as well, pushing it towards Jessie and James. The Pokémon soon crashed on the ground in front of the duo, although it rose with a groan shortly after.

Jessie growled, moving her hand towards her pocket. “Alright, Arbok, hit that bird with Headbutt!” She ordered, moving her hand, which held a Poké Ball, away from her pocket.

The ball popped open, soon revealing Arbok. The Pokémon got released so close from Pidgeotto that the Headbutt attack landed a swift hit at the bird Pokémon, pushing it backwards two times faster than Weezing had been pushed earlier.

Misty moved her hand to her pocket as well, clenching her other fist. “No, no, no! Staryu, use Water Gun!” She shouted, holding a Poké Ball.

It quickly materialized Staryu out of it. Shortly after, the water Pokémon launched a concentrated water beam at Arbok from its star tine.

The opposing Pokémon had no chance to evade the attack. As soon as it hit Arbok, the Pokémon got flung backwards by the force of Water Gun, crashing against a tree.

“Weezing, counterattack Staryu with your Sludge!” James commanded, pointing at the star Pokémon.

As Weezing stood up and prepared to puff its attack, Misty took a step backwards. “Evade, Staryu!”

Meanwhile, Ash took a step forward, pointing at Weezing. “Now, Pidgeotto, Quick Attack!”

Up to that point, all Brock did was watch the situation with an observant look.

••••••••••

Running away from the earlier kindergarten, a tiny white figure had been running to the nearby forest. It was Meowth.

All he wanted was to make Jessie and James understand that their best friend hadn’t ditched them. Meowth had just followed their idea of bringing happiness to the kid. After all, even Team Rocket held the standard of helping children during Kids’ day!

At least, he believed so.

Perhaps Meowth could live with the Timmy kid, but leaving Team Rocket and, more specifically, Jessie and James should never be an option. An entire life built with his only true friends wasn’t going to be broken by a thoughtless decision!

Even if Team Rocket always came first, Meowth kind of felt bad for abandoning Timmy. Who knew what psychological scars were attacking the kid at that moment!

But no step Meowth took could be undone. He had to meet with Jessie and James, nothing else.

As he ran to the nearby forest, where he hoped to find his friends, Meowth’s ears perked up. A splash noise, followed by a crash one, were barely audible to him.

“What’s goin’ on?” He pondered as he ran towards the source, the sound indicating some kind of trouble becoming louder and louder.

Until Meowth, from behind some bushes, arrived at what seemed to be a Pokémon battle. “Oh, look, it’s the twerps, and they’re battlin’… Jessie and Jimmy?! And they have the Pikachu?!” He whispered to himself as he observed the situation, frowning.

James’s Weezing had just received a hard hit from Ash’s Pidgeotto, crashing to the ground and soon fainting.

“No, Weezing! Return!” James, the one holding Pikachu’s cage, shouted, extending his Poké Ball to return the weak Pokémon inside.

Meanwhile, Jessie’s Arbok bounced high enough to bite Pidgeotto’s wing, causing it to fall with Jessie’s Pokémon.

“Pidgeotto, return!” Ash shouted, pointing its Poké Ball to dematerialize the bird Pokémon.

“Staryu, use Tackle!” Misty commanded, her left fist clenched.

A rustle interrupted the battle. As everyone was startled and glancing at the noise origin, a white form was seen walking out from some bushes. It was soon identified as a Meowth.

The Pokémon glanced at Jessie and James, frowning. “You guys are stealin’ Pikachu without me?!”

Everyone had their eyes widened. “You?!” Jessie began, slowly pointing at Meowth. “We thought…-“

“…you had left Team Rocket for the boy…?” James finished her speech.

“Pika-Pi?” Pikachu asked from inside its cage, eyeing Meowth.

Brock put a hand on his chin. “Meowth, you're back with Team Rocket?! What made you change your mind?"

Meowth took a few steps towards Jessie and James. “Nothin’ in this world’s gonna replace my partners!”

James winced. “Really?! But the kid… What about him? We know you were getting along with-“

“Meeooowwth? Where are you?” James’s speech was cut by a distant high-pitched shout.

Everyone froze. “That voice’s from…-“ Meowth began.

“…from Timmy? Yes, it is.” Brock finished.

“And he’s looking for you, Meowth.” Ash said, taking a step forward.

The high-pitched voice was audible again: “Meeeoooowwth?”

James clenched his left fist. "Alright, Meowth, what's going on? The boy’s out there shouting for you, and we all know you wouldn't just leave him hanging!” He yelled in the cat Pokémon’s face. “So, spill it. What's the deal?"

Pikachu, who remained inside its cage for the whole time, sighed, touching the bars with its paws.

Meowth squirmed. “No, no, you’re gettin’ all wrong! I ain’t ever gonna leave ya, guys!” He explained, looking at Jessie and James. “I was just, uhh…-“

James sighed, looking down. “Come on, let’s find him.” After saying these words, he ran towards the general direction of the previous shouts. Pikachu’s cage was still being held by him.

Meowth widened his eyebrows. One second later, though, he began following James. “Wait, Jim!”

Jessie crossed her arms. “Weren’t we supposed to steal the sparky rat?!” She asked, rolling her eyes. “Ugh, fine. Just this once, I’ll follow these goofs.” Jessie then pointed Arbok’s Poké Ball to return the Pokémon inside. She soon began to run towards her teammates, her fists clenched.

“Wait, they still have Pikachu with them!” Misty exclaimed, moving Staryu’s Poké Ball to point at the water Pokémon. “Come back, Staryu!”

After the Pokémon’s dematerialization, Misty began pursuing the Team Rocket trio.

“Give me back my Pikachu!” Ash shouted as he and Brock followed Misty.

••••••••••

There the boy was, inside a forest, searching for his friend Meowth, the one who had once saved him from a Beedrill. Timmy didn’t know that the Meowth could talk, but what mattered most was that the Pokémon became his hero.

“Meeeoooowwth?” Timmy shouted, using his hands to amplify the echo.

Getting out of the kindergarten wasn’t hard; all Timmy had to do was sneak, just like he had seen from a Poké cartoon.

Finding Meowth was all Timmy wanted. However, after a while of searching, the boy could only find a canyon.
“Meowth… What happened to you?” Timmy sighed, looking down from the ravine side. A nice river was flowing at the bottom of the natural gap.

Tears formed in Timmy’s eyes as he kept looking down. “Please, come back to me… I-I need you!”

From behind the trees, a loud cracking noise echoed across the forest. The boy instinctively looked at the sound origin.

One of Team Rocket agents who kidnapped him earlier, the lavender haired one, was seen, followed by Meowth and the long haired kidnapper.

The lavender one, who held a cage trapping Pikachu with one of his hands, extended his other one, using it to form a stop-like gesture while opening his mouth to speak.

But Timmy gasped even before the agent’s words came. The gasp was enough for the boy to lose equilibrium and barely fall into the canyon. He reacted fast enough to place a hand onto the ground, hanging at the cliff side.

Meowth rushed towards Timmy, looking back at Jessie and James. “Aw, geez! You two, quit starin' and lend a paw!”

James knew he would later regret letting go of Pikachu, but regardless, he dropped its cage to the grass, rushing to the canyon. Once beside Meowth, James knelt, quickly moving his own hand towards Timmy’s.

After a short screaming session, the boy hesitantly pulled his free hand towards James’s and Meowth’s reach. However, just before they grabbed it, Timmy’s other hand lost its grip on the ground, resulting in the two Team Rocket agents sliding towards the canyon as well while groaning.

Just as James’s waistline was close to sliding into the ravine, two hands grabbed onto his legs, followed by a groan and a pulling force enough to pull James, Meowth, and Timmy back to the horizontal ground.

As the three of them looked back to acknowledge their savior, they saw Jessie, her hands on her hips. “Well, next time you decide to play ‘hang off a cliff’, let me know in advance!” She joked with a smirk, extending her hand towards her teammates.

As James and Meowth were getting up with Jessie’s help, the duo gave her a frown without replying.

Meanwhile, Timmy shifted himself to a seating position, looking at what appeared to be a commotion of the three trainers from earlier and their Pikachu inside a cage.

The boy then deviated his attention to his rescuers, Meowth and the two kidnappers from before, all of them facing the kid. “You…You're the same ones who took me, but you saved me now. I don't understand." Timmy said, pointing at the human duo close to Meowth.

Jessie rolled her eyes. “Listen up, kiddo, we might have a reputation, but today is Kids’ day.” She replied, smirking. “And even we have a soft spot for kids like you.”

Widening his eyes, Timmy moved his finger towards Meowth. “Friend… You are with them!?”

“Of course!” Meowth answered, moving his paw to touch Timmy’s finger. “But don’t worry, my friends ain’t gonna hurt ya.” He then frowned at his partners, as if saying, ‘Right…?’.

A bead of sweat formed on Jessie’s and James’s faces as they nodded sheepishly.

Timmy tilted his head. “So why did you two get me earlier?”

James faced Meowth, who in turn nodded to his partner.

“Well, you see, it's a bit of a mix-up.” James began with a nervous chuckle. “We had this, uh, not-so-great plan earlier. Meowth here…” He pointed to Meowth before continuing. “…would become your biggest hero for, well, saving you from us.”

“Not that they’d actually harm ya, Tim.” Meowth continued, getting closer to Timmy. “But ya were wantin’ so much to see that Meowth from your past… We just had to make ya smile.”

Timmy widened his eyes, gaping. “Really?!” He said, getting up from his sitting position. A smile began to form on his face. “Thank you so much!” The boy then rushed to hug Jessie and James.
The duo hugged him back, sweating. “Of course, kiddo.” Jessie said, looking upwards in embarrassment.

“We’re happy for you.” James said, smiling.

Meowth jumped to Timmy’s shoulder. “Nice Kids’ day, friend!”

As Timmy’s smile grew wider, the group kept hugging each other for a few more seconds.

The first to exit the hug was Jessie. “Alright, kiddo, let's get you back to that school of yours. We’ve had our share of adventures for the day."

James and Timmy separated from each other, while Meowth remained on the boy’s shoulder. “Does that mean we’ll never see each other again?” Timmy asked, his lips trembling.

Meowth patted his head, smiling. “Tim, life’s full of surprises! Just remember, you've got a big friend in this talkin' Meowth, no matter where the adventure takes you."

“And don’t forget this moment we shared together, Timmy.” James finished, offering his hand to the boy.

Timmy took his hand, nodding. “I won’t.”

As they began walking, Jessie took the lead. James walked hand in hand with Timmy, while Meowth rested on the boy’s shoulder.

••••••••••

After freeing Pikachu, Ash and his friends observed Jessie, James, and Meowth interacting with Timmy.

“Did you guys see how Jessie, James, and Meowth saved Timmy from falling in that canyon?” Ash questioned, grinning.

Pikachu sighed, nodding. “Piika-pika.”

“No, but we can tell that they’re getting along very well.” Brock replied, putting a hand on his own chin.

“It’s hard to believe that these three are actually helping Timmy!” Misty exclaimed, her arms softly crossed.

Ash kept a soft smile on his face. “Perhaps there is indeed some good in them. Maybe they actually don’t fit in with Team Rocket that well.”

At that moment, Ash and his friends saw Jessie, James, Meowth, and Timmy walking back to the kindergarten. The young trainers remained hidden, following them in silence.

As soon as Jessie, James, Meowth, and Timmy arrived at the school, Ash and his friends saw them trading some dialogues with each other. Jessie’s hands were on her hips as she smirked. James smiled, his eyes filled with tears. Timmy kept a soft smile, caressing Meowth on his shoulder.

The group was seen reuniting in another hug, which lasted around the same time as the last one. Jessie, James, and Meowth soon began walking away from Timmy as both groups bid farewell to each other.

Once Jessie, James, and Meowth were out of Timmy’s sight, Ash and his friends approached the trio from their front.

The Team Rocket agents widened their eyes at Ash and his friends’ sight. “You twerps are still around!?” Jessie said, crossing her own arms.

Both groups stopped walking once they were in front of each other. “Of course!” Ash replied, grinning. “We saw how much you guys helped Timmy. That was soo nice!”

Meowth rolled his eyes. "Oh, joy. Praise from the twerps. Real heartwarming. But don’t think we quit Team Rocket just because of him or ya!”

Pikachu frowned. “Pikachu pii…”

“Yeah, yeah, we get it.” Misty said with a drab voice, her arms crossed. “We are still enemies. Nothing has changed.”

Brock leaned forward. “Team Rocket or not, today, you three showed kindness to Timmy. Don’t forget it.”

Jessie, James, and Meowth nodded shyly.

Ash’s smile faded away. “So, what are you guys up to?”

Meowth looked at James, who in turn looked at Jessie. Soon after, a chain of smirks formed in their faces. “We have the nicest idea ever for the Kids’ day!” James exclaimed.

Ash and his friends had neutral expressions, except for Pikachu, who narrowed its eyes.

Meowth jumped in excitement. "Tag, you're It! Get ready for some Team Rocket-style fun, twerps!"

Ash and his friends, including Pikachu, widened their eyes. “Tag?!” Ash said, tilting his head.

Jessie, James, and Meowth began walking backwards, still smirking. “Has the cat got your legs?!” Meowth taunted. “Common, twerps, catch us if ya can!”

A smile reappeared on Ash’s face. “Okay, then. Let’s go!”

Jessie, James, and Meowth turned around and began running away from Ash and his friends, who chased after them. Even Pikachu grinned at the game, pursuing the trio.

“Hey, wait for us!” Misty shouted, smiling.

“Looks like we’re too fast for you!” Jessie shouted back, giggling together with James and Meowth.

Smirking, Pikachu used its Agility to run after them, quickly overtaking Ash and his friends.

Even with their relatively high running velocities, Jessie, James, and Meowth were no match for Pikachu’s speed. The yellow Pokémon touched each one of the trio, causing them to lose equilibrium and fall to the ground.

“Piika-pi!” Pikachu cheered, emitting high-pitched noises equivalent of giggles.

Jessie, James, and Meowth laughed. “Hey, that’s not fair!” James shouted, still grinning.

The trio quickly got up and turned around to face Ash and his friends. “Alright, Arbok, tag the twerps!” Jessie commanded as she picked up its Poké Ball from her pocket.

Ash, Misty, and Brock went from laughing to giggling. “Uh, oh, let’s run away!” Misty shouted as she ran to her left, and so did her friends.

The game continued, with both sides calling out their Pokémon one by one. Even though Jessie, James, and Meowth had a number disadvantage, their Team Rocket skills ensured that the game wouldn’t be easy for Ash and his friends.

The fun remained constant, with everyone laughing, taunting, and running. That’s how Kids’ day influenced the nice truce between Team Rocket and Team Ash.

••••••••••

“Meowth… Even if you aren’t the same Meowth from the past, I will always hold you in my heart.”

Back to the kindergarten, Timmy stared at the forest for a few seconds before the teacher and her students shouted his name.

Timmy sighed. Then, a smile filled his face as he turned around and ran towards his classmates.
“Always.”
