Cynthian hugged the crying fox in her arms while her mind raced. She had a bad feeling about what was going on, and her rising anxiety released a lemon scent from her flowers.

Petram took in the embrace with a soft whimper, desperately trying to regenerate his body. A part of him felt ashamed of himself about crying. That… wasn’t a grownup thing to do!

At least it helped release the tension after what he had seen. Nobody should feel what he felt!

"Do you know where Icetales might be? We need to find him and make sure he's okay, Petram," Cynthian said with a frown while taking deep breaths to calm her nerves.

“I’m… not sure,” admitted Petram with a low voice. “When I connected with Daddy, there was a strange… interference?” He shook his head. “I’m not sure how to describe that. It’s the first time that something like this happened, and I don’t know what that means.”

"It's going to be okay, Petram. Come on, Icetales wouldn't want you to be scared, right?" she said, her voice hushed while she helped wipe Petram's muzzle.

Petram stayed silent for a few seconds, pondering hard about that question. “…Probably not…”

The Vulpix let Cynthian dry his remaining tears, then shook his head and tried to focus. She was right — they had to find him! Who knows what would have happened if he was left wandering all by himself, with those dark throughts clouding his mind.

…Would he go as far as…?

‘No. No, he wouldn’t.’

Petram inhaled some air and regained a more solid aspect, trying to motivate himself to keep his spirits as high as possible. He closed his eyes as he focused on that vision, trying to recollect what he felt while they were linked together.

“A-anyway… While I can’t pinpoint his exact position, I… felt the cold hitting my fur, with a thick snow on my paws.” He paused, thinking about that information. “So, somewhere snowy. Maybe the mountains, or the forest…”

Somewhere frigid and snowy? Cynthian furrowed her brows and began to think of anywhere that could fit such descriptions. Where should they even begin to look?

"Could you tell if he was still in Destiny Village, or anywhere nearby?" Cynthian asked, holding his paw firmly. She could feel how shaken he was from how much he trembled.

“No, he… isn’t in Destiny Village anymore. The ‘signal’ is way too weak. There was… snow, then I saw swords…” Petram said, then his eyes widened. “Oh snap! I know where he could be!”

"Where?!" Both Cynthian and her shadow asked at the same time. The sooner they moved, the better.

Petram fidgeted and stared at the floor, his tails tightly wrapped around his body. There was something he didn’t understand. Why did Icetales go there of all places? Both foxes knew how deep the mental wounds went, with the Ninetales slipping into a mild depression whenever he thought about that place and the heartache it caused him. His fragile heart couldn’t handle that amount of stress. Not after everything he went through in his homeworld.

So… why bring himself pain? Was that penance, or he was being dragged there by someone else? But who? Who would do that?

Petram didn’t have the answer to that, but he could tell that Icetales was far from okay. He needed help, and the Vulpix had to find him. No matter what.

“I… I’ll take you there.”

———

The Northern Pines were more ominous than usual, as a dark blue fog mixed with snow cloaked that side of the forest. Petram led Cynthian through the snowstorm, with the light on his chest as one of the few sources of illumination. The Vulpix was mostly quiet as he traversed the land, keeping his spectral flame burning to give some warmth to the both of them. He couldn’t tell if he felt cold because of the weather or because of how ghastly everything looked.

“Gosh. I didn’t know he could summon such a strong blizzard…” commented Petram, peering through the gusts and snowflakes. “Hmm… Weird, though. It’s almost… chaotic, as if it went out of control or something…”

The Vulpix tried to connect with Icetales through telepathy, but that only resulted in a sharp headache. He groaned and rubbed his forehead, trying to get over the ringing noises.

“Ugh! Still no dice! I can tell he’s around here, but I’m not sure where he could…” He trailed off as he noticed a metallic tip sticking from the snow. He stared at that object for a while, before digging through the frozen water.

It was a broken sword, shattered in chunks. Blue patches caked the tip, which Petram sniffed. A metallic scent. The Vulpix balked and his anxiety skyrocketed. He fleetingly turned away and stared pleadingly at Cynthian.

“L-let’s keep moving! I don’t like this!”

Cynthian's eyes lingered on the broken blade. Her mind drifted to the fencing spars she used to have with Icetales, and how she was too clumsy to ever best him at it. An icy mist escaped her when she exhaled, and she held herself tighter as the cold slowly penetrated her multiple layers of clothing.

"Are we getting close?" Cynthian pressed on, following Petram who guided the way. The icy storm filled her ears that she couldn't even hear her snow crunching beneath her steps.

"Icetales! Are you out there? It's me, Cynthian!" Cynthian shouted before having to pull her scarf up again. The forest was cold. More than usual.

Petram mentally sighed, relieved that Cynthian didn’t press about he presence of those swords. If there was something he knew she didn’t need to know, it was why they were there to begin with.

He took a few steps away from that accursed place and swiveled his ears in all directions, trying to see if the missing Ninetales would have heeded her words.

Howling winds, then silence. Petram’s core sank a little.

“Hey! Daddy! Answer us!”

…Nothing. Just more silence.

“By the gods! Where did he g—”

Then, there was something in the distance. A dark illusion, flickering in the middle of the snow-filled gusts. Petram squinted his eyes, trying to understand what or who was there.

“…Daddy? It’s you?”

The fog darkened further, and in that moment there seemed to be multiple shadows surrounding the two. Petram jolted in shock and glared cautiously at those shadows, his ghostly fur puffed and smoking.

“W-who’s there?!” he cried out, keeping his fear hidden by a brave facade. Growls and snarls came from the pack of mirages, who inched closer and regarded the duo with suspicion. “Where’s Daddy? Did you do something to him?”

The shadows glared at the intruders for a few seconds, until the pack dissolved slowly, evaporating in smoky trails. Only one shadow remained, who walked forward and away from the gusts.

It didn’t take long for Petram to recognize that entity, and the Vulpix growled angrily. Purple flames surrounded his body. “Oh no! It’s you again!”

“Well, well, well. Just look who dared to grace yours truly with their presences.” The shadow smirked in all his magnificent glory. “If it isn’t my not-so-dear ‘grandson’ and that transvestite gal. My, it has been a while.”

"Stay behind me, Petram," Cynthian said, raising a bouquet in front of him while she glared uneasily at the disappearing shadows.

“Well, well, well. Just look who dared to grace yours truly with their presences.” The shadow smirked in all his magnificent glory. “If it isn’t my not-so-dear ‘grandson’ and that transvestite gal. My, it has been a while.”

Cynthian darkened her expression and held a bouquet in Petram's path, cautioning him from moving ahead. Magnificent appearing only meant that Icetales had lost control of his shadows again somehow.

He needed us, but we weren't there to comfort him... Our own pain harms those around us...

Cynthian grit her teeth and quiet hum whirred from her flowers as she readied herself to strike in case anything went wrong. "You shouldn't be here. You're not Magnificent!"

The smirk didn’t leave Magnificent’s muzzle. If all, it grew wider and more ominous.

“Ha! Is thy judgment this poor, thou foolish lady?” He flaunted his blazing tails, a smug twinkle in his bright red eyes. “Dost thy eyes not behold these magnificent tails, the upmost symbol of power for a Ninetales?”

“You know what she meant!” hissed Petram, glaring ferociously at the shadow. “You’re not the real Magnificent! You’re nothing more a figment of Daddy’s nightmares, a demon that refuses to leave him alone. Why don’t you scram at once?”

“…Am I really just an illusion?” The dark fox stared at the two with contempt and arrogance, while his mane burned with a dark shade of purple. “Then pray tell. Would a mere figment be able to do… this?”

Before Petram or Cynthian could react, an apparition made of darkness emerged from Magnificent’s body and struck the floor in front of the two intruders, spraying snow around and cloaking the area with a thick miasma.

The Vulpix had barely the time to register what attacked them, but it looked like some… monstrous black fox. A fox who tried to assault its prey with a lunge.

Magnificent laughed maliciously at seeing the shock in the duo’s faces, while the hazy apparition floated behind him, its entire body shifting with random patterns. It was a Thievul, then a beast, then a Vulpix, then a… whatever that was. Staring at that apparition was like staring at Chaos incarnate.

“Holy—! What the heck is that?!” yelled Petram, breathing hard to fill his inexistent lungs.

Magnificent glanced at the strange entity, a delighted expression on his dark muzzle. “Ah, is this not such a beauty of madness? What you fools are beholding now is a wraith.”

Petram narrowed his eyes, feeling uncomfortable. “W-wraith?”

“A manifestation of someone’s innermost darkness, as well as their deepest fears… and regrets.”

“Regrets…”

“Hm. I must admit I am impressed. There was far more darkness inside his spirit that even he knew about,” commented Magnificent, focused completely on the wraith. “Even though, most folks know that there is no more perfect match than frost and darkness.” He smirked and looked again at the duo. “There is a reason winter is the main protagonist in most of the darkest tales.”

“…Okay, enough with this nonsense! Where’s Daddy?” Petram growled while flames gathered inside his mouth. “We’re gonna force our way past you with force, if you don’t answer!”

“Hmph. If thou truly want to know, thy ‘Daddy’ is no more. All it’s left is,” Magnificent’s body started twisting and churning, matching the hazy aspect of the wraith, “a beast, born from darkness and made of darkness. There is no salvation for him anymore. Or, rather, there never was. The inevitable… happened at last.”

Petram didn’t say anything at first, the nervousness settling inside his core. However, after reminding himself the words of encouragement that Icetales often uttered to everyone, he stared at Magnificent with defiance. “…You’re lying, and we’re gonna prove that. There is and always was light in Daddy’s heart, and we’re gonna bring it out once more. Just wait and see!”

There was silence as the two foxes glared at each other, with the would-be beacon of hope challenging the wraith of wrath. After a few seconds, Magnificent stepped away and motioned toward the center of the storm.

“Be my guests. I cannot wait to see how this ‘heart’ will help with your cause. Or, better yet, how your efforts will be in vain, swallowed by the forces of Chaos. Hehe… hahahah!”

And with those last ominous words, Magnificent and the wraith disappeared in puffs of dark red smoke, but there was that strange sensation lingering in the air, as if something was still watching them…

Whether it had been the blistering cold or the ominous wraiths, Cynthian couldn't help but be frozen while Magnificent played his show for them. She bit her lip and snapped out of it.

"You're right, Petram," Cynthian said taking in a deep breath breath. She didn't show any discomfort even as the cold air blistered her lungs. "Icetales always was the brightest of us."

Cynthian stared at the raging storm with a frown. She had to believe Icetales waited for her. The time had come to be the one to ignite his light for him. Without any further delay, she began her march towards the storm.

"He needs us now, Petram. Let's hurry."

“Right! I’m with you!”

Petram bolted after Cynthian, his core brimming with determination, and they soon disappeared in the storm.

So, they are here. They came for me.

That had to be expected, however.

They should not have come. I cannot be saved.

I am a curse, a pestilence, an oxymoron that is not meant to exist.

I… I… I cannot protect them…

“Well, this is weird!” commented Petram as he studied his surroundings, the flame in his chest flickering with the pale purple light.

The dark blue fog was so thick that they could barely see the trees ahead of them, so they had to proceed with caution. Snowflakes were suspended in the air, gleaming with a pale golden light. With the darkness of the area, they seemed more small stars than ice crystals. Even the gusts had decreased in strength, which was… bizarre.

“Hmm… It seems that we have reached the eye of the storm. Things are so… quiet here.” Petram frowned. “Should we be concerned?”

The Vulpix perked up when he sensed something around them. Some kind of presence was hidden in the fog. He could tell this much. But… what was that? Yet another illusion?

“Well, ‘Grandaddy’! If this is part of your little game, then let’s play!” He planted his paw firmly in the snow. “Show what you’ve got!”

And what a show that was! Shadowy figures ran at a fair distance from the two, with their shapes barely visible amidst the fog. If they didn’t know any better, someone could believe they were ghosts. And yet… no. They were just a blend of illusions and shadows. A literal shadow play.

“Whoa! I had no idea Daddy could do that!” said Petram, before turning to Cynthian. “It makes you wish we weren’t in peril to truly enjoy this, huh?”

“Diamond dust. A cloud of ice crystals close to the floor, capable of refracting light and disrupting the vision.”

Petram blinked when the voice spoke, then turned toward the source. In front of him there were the faint silhouettes of a Ninetales and many small foxes. Nine of them were Vulpix, and the last one… was a shapeless entity.

“What am I?”

The shapeless form turned into a Vulpix.

“Am I a Vulpix?”

Then, the Vulpix turned into a Nickit.

“Am I a Nickit?”

Then, the Nickit turned into a strange fox with sharp fangs and burning mane. He was shivering and had his flaming tails between his legs.

“Or am I… a beast?”

The shadow rotated forms, while his pose was hunched and pained. Vulpix, Nickit, Daemon, Vulpix, Nickit, Daemon, Vulpix, Nickit, Daemon—

“What am I?!”

A silent shriek came from the shapeshifting fox, just as the Vulpix lunged at him. The phantoms faded in a black mist, slowly returning to the depths of the eye of the storm. Petram stared in shock at the blackness surrounding them, his mind unable to formulate any thought for a long time.

“That… O-Oh, gods…” Petram hugged his shoulders with his tiny paws. “I-I didn’t know that… He was going through… that he still didn’t…” He shivered. “I should have understood that something was very wrong! That his demons were so powerful! I… Why didn’t he tell anything?” He sniffled. “I… I could have tried to help…”

Cynthian held her bouquet on Petram's back. She looked in the other direction, so he couldn't see her expression as she said, "We often hide our greatest fears from the ones we love, because we fear being rejected by them."

"Icetales, I know you're going through a lot right now," Cynthian said, a cold mist surrounding her as she walked further into the storm. "But, do you remember what we said to each other at the void lands?!"

She remembered it clearly.

“Can I… count on thee to be my shoulder if there will be any need, just as I am willing to lend mine?”

"I'm here now, and Petram is too! We'll get you out of this. You know we will!" She swung her arm towards the ultra shade. The cold had gotten to the point where she could barely feel her skin anymore, were it not for the terrain spell slowly keeping her from freezing over and shattering like a glass doll. How much could she stand, before she could handle no more?

Petram looked down at the floor, before hugging Cynthian as tight as his small body could. He felt her clothing being stiff and rigid from the cold. Was she doing alright?

The Vulpix focused on his inner flame and poured as much energy as he could, trying to warm her up. Though, it was hard to determine whether his efforts were having some result.

"We often hide our greatest fears from the ones we love, because we fear being rejected by them."

“But… I would have never rejected him. Why would I…?”

Petram paused, mulling over that situation. Both ice foxes had shared some thoughts and memories through their telepathic link, and the Vulpix knew well what Icetales went through throughout his life.

Sure, there were still a few memories and facts that were nebulous at best and unexplained at worst, but… he loved the older fox, and always would.

“…I wouldn’t do that. Not even if someone threatened to break my core,” he muttered, leaning against Cynthian. He took a deep breath and glanced at the Roserade. “Huh… You sure you’re doing okay?”

The Vulpix dug through a little bag he had brought with him. He moved aside a Protect Orb he kept for the emergencies, then produced a Sitrus Berry and offered it to his friend.

“Take it. You need this more than I do.”

"Icetales, I know you're going through a lot right now," Cynthian said, a cold mist surrounding her as she walked further into the storm. "But, do you remember what we said to each other at the void lands?!"

[…]

"I'm here now, and Petram is too! We'll get you out of this. You know we will!"

Cynthian’s voice echoed around the area, undeterred by the darkness surrounding the place. There was no response at first, but then a faint sound could be heard cutting through the air. Despite its faintness, in the ears that felt as sharp as a burning blade.

It was weeping, and it came from nearby.

"I know you wouldn't reject him. None of us would, Petram, because he means much more to us than he realizes sometimes," Cynthian said with a smile. She did not answer his second question, nor did she accept the protect orb and Sitrus Berry even as frost gathered on the edges of her mask.

He has a kind heart, just like Icetales.

Petram didn’t need to be told twice and followed Cynthian closely, with the weeping as their only guide.

If the Vulpix had a physical heart, he surely would be feeling his chest becoming tighter and a break inside of him. Instead, his core was quivering due to his body taking a more gelatinous aspect, and his flame became a dim flicker.

Out of worry, he tried to connect with Icetales again. Once again, he felt a sharp headache which made him dizzy, but there was something else he managed to make out this time…

‘Chase that beast!’

‘Destroy the plague!’

‘That thing must be the reason the auroras are gone!’

‘I did not do that! You must believe me! I… I…’

‘Princess Kyukon Fifth, stay away from that thing!’

‘That ‘thing’ is my dear brother! Do not hurt him!’

‘Beast! Beast! Beast!’

Petram shut his eyes as he tried to control those invasive thoughts. If they affected him so much and he wasn’t the target of those accusations, he could only wonder how Icetales was feeling.

Then, they heard something else mixed with the weeping. Those were… snarls. Petram was even more worried: was something threatening Icetales?

“Daddy!” he howled, running even faster. He had to hurry! He had to save Daddy from whatever!

What they saw was… even more darkness, but a faint blue glow cut through that pitch black void. Shadows of different shapes swirled around some figure, right in the middle of the storm.

And that figure… that was a fox with a dark purple pelt and bright azure tails, cowering in the snow and staring at the menacing mirages with eyes wide in fear and ears drooped. Right in front of him stood a black wraith, with glowing tears falling from its dark blue eyes and flashing his fangs at the phantoms, as a sort of self-defense. There was an air of confusion surrounding them both, as they struggled to get a grasp with reality and were assailed by their demons.

Petram’s eyes widened when he noticed a detail: wrapped around the purple fox’s neck… was a blue ribbon.

Cynthian's chest tighened from listening to those shadows. She continued to run toward them, squinting her eyes at the vaguely familiar purple. Cynthian gasped. She recognized that blue ribbon anywhere.

"Icetales, don't listen to them! They aren't real!"

To prove her point, she pulled her bouquets forward and fired a flurry of pellets at the swirling mirages.

The green bullets hit their mark, alongside a volley of bright embers, making some members of the shadowy pack dissolve into dark swirls. The remaining illusions turned to the two intruders, their lifeless glares trained on them.

‘Protecting the beast?’

‘All those that protect the plague must be plagued themselves!’

‘Purge! Purge! Purge!’

Icetales hissed at the crowd, unable to block those words of scorn and hatred. Darkness flared from his body, his body tense as if ready to run away.

"Icetales, don't listen to them! They aren't real!"

Icetales turned to Cynthian, but said nothing. There was only terror and shame in his eyes, with his ears pinning even further to the back of his head.

The wraith glanced at the two, before saying with his voice full of sorrow, “You should not have come. I cannot be salvaged. I cannot be fixed. I cannot—” He stopped as he resumed snarling at the illusions they walked closer to them. “I am a bad omen. Go away. Save yourselves from myself. This is… what I deserve…”

“…What are you talking about?!” cried Petram, glaring at the illusions. “You don’t deserve this! You aren’t a bad omen or whatever!” He shuddered. “You’re my Daddy, and I want you back home. Please, come back with us.”

Both Icetales and wraith stared at the Vulpix, then at Cynthian. They seemed conflicted about something, with a mix of confusion and fear filling their eyes.

“I… cannot…”

More darkness flared from Icetales, making his body turn black by the sheer Shadow power burning in his spirit. The wraith howled at the darkness and the remaining illusions became even more twisted in appearance. Then, they all turned into the demented smirks of Magnificent.

“I am… a threat…”

Red tendrils erupted from the backs of the Magnificent clones, aiming at Icetales.

“I cannot stop t h e d a r k n e s s!”

The tendrils were cloaked in a dark aura, and that time Icetales whispered. “Help me…”

Dark waves shot toward Icetales…

“Daddy!”

Petram jumped in the way of the attack, and his eyes were filled in horror when multiple Shadow Leeches were headed in his way, surrounded by blue nebulas. The Vulpix gasped in horror at what was going to happen to him, his inner flame disappearing instantly.

“Oh crap…”

Shadowy fangs sank into the helpless Vulpix, bursting into a black explosion and snow scattered around, and making it impossible to see what happened to the Ultra Shade…

"Petram, no!" Cynthian grit her teeth and rushed forward. Bright glowing petals bloomed everywhere she took a step and gathered around her to form a vicious whirlwind. She furrowed her brows and swung her arms down, crashing the glowing petal storm on the shadow leeches.

"Petram, are you okay?!" Cynthian tried to reach him, but staggered from the cold. Sensing her body reaching its limit, she looked at Icetales with pleading eyes and whimpered. "Icetales, please, you have to help me."

"Petram, are you okay?!"

The light of the Belladonna clashed against the darkness of the Leeches, raising a cloud of Radiance and Shadow.

A few seconds later, the air cleared, and a motionless Ultra Stone laid on the snow, with a few glowing petals scattered around it. The illusions of Magnificent laughed maliciously and the atmosphere seemed to darken further, just like Icetales’s mood…

Cynthian tried to reach him, but staggered from the cold. Sensing her body reaching its limit, she looked at Icetales with pleading eyes and whimpered. "Icetales, please, you have to help me."

That lone plea for help, and the miserable aspect on Cynthian’s body… Icetales felt his heart squeezing in his chest, while the wraith downpoured tears. “Everyone I care about… is hurt because of me…”

Icetales winced once, then took a slow step toward the Roserade. Then another. Then, he walked toward her, his movements cautious as if he was afraid of touching a broken porcelain doll.

He took a deep breath, exposing his sharp fangs, and his tails burned more brightly… and wrapped his paws around Cynthian, shielding her from the cold.

“…I am sorry…” he muttered, wrapping his tails on her back as well. Despite their fiery aspect, they offered a soft and warm feeling. “For… everything…”

At the scene, the Magnificent clones shrieked in disbelief.

“What?! It cannot be!” they seethed, as they turned into multiple shapes, resembling various ‘mons that assaulted Icetales throughout his entire life. “Thou art a beast, a freak of nature!” The screams grew louder, but Icetales held onto Cynthian tighter. “Thou don’t deserve nor art meant to exist!” Icetales ignored the voices once more. “Stop this! Daemons cannot love!”

The pack of phantoms prepared another Shadow Leech, but the wraith stood in front of the crowd. The sorrowful expression disappeared from its face, replaced by a burning gaze of hatred.

Toward the ‘mon who put those ideas in his mind.

Toward the “father” that convinced him that he was nothing more than a beast.

Toward the responsible of years of solitude and despair.

“…Heh. Hahaha! Thou dare defy me, foolish lad?” howled Magnificent, before smirking at the Ultra Stone. “With what help? Thy ‘son’ is gone,” they glanced at Cynthian, “and thy mate will soon be. Thou were born alone, and will die alone.”

“…Thou art wrong.”

“Huh?”

“Because unlike thee, ‘Father’, I have a heart. I have light. Light that thou tried so hard to snuff throughout my entire life.”

Magnificent growled. “Thou imbecilic freak! Daemons do not have light! They never did, they never will!”

“This world proved thee wrong!”
howled the wraith, his eyes glowing red. “And I am done listening to thy balderdash!”

The wraith grew in size, empowered by the glowing petals still shining on the floor. It became so enormous that it easily dwarfed the entire Magnificent pack, while small stars shone inside of the spectral matter. That was enough to make the illusions be actually scared of that show of darkness, unable to comprehend it.

How could darkness be empowered by light?

“…Begone, malaise.”

And the wraith lunged at the pack, engulfing them all in a shadowy gust. The Magnificent yelled silently, wiped away by the shadowy energy charged with frost.

Just as soon as everything started, everything was gone, with the shadowed Icetales still hugging Cynthian and crying on her shoulder. Not too far from them, the Ultra Stone wiggled…

Just as soon as everything started, everything was gone, with the shadowed Icetales still hugging Cynthian and crying on her shoulder.

Cynthian hugged Icetales back, feeling the warm tears on her shoulder as she basked in his warmth. A weird nostalgia budded in her heart. Their roles had reversed, and now she was the one bringing Icetales ease of mind.

"I said it before, didn't I? No matter what anyone calls you or how they see you, you'll always be my light, Icetales," Cynthian said, tightening her shivering arms around him.

"I said it before, didn't I? No matter what anyone calls you or how they see you, you'll always be my light, Icetales," Cynthian said, tightening her shivering arms around him.

Icetales whimpered and shivered, still feeling the darkness flowing inside his body. It was so difficult to keep the most negative emotions under control, and yet… somehow, he did it. Whether it was his affinity to darkness or his inner light, he couldn’t tell. Perhaps it was… both?

But that was irrelevant. He could tell that Cynthian was barely hanging in there, what with her body not being accustomed for the cold. Even her clothes were frozen.

Oh, the poor darling. Facing one of her worst enemies… for him. Icetales didn’t know whether to feel elated by her bravery, or ashamed for forcing her to go through all of that.

And Petram… what happened to him? Did he revert to a simple stone?

“Light…” He sighed, before pulling away and looking at his clawed paw. “Quite the light I am. I let my most obscure thoughts cloud my mind, take me away from everything and everyone I love, then…” Breath in, breath out, clear the darkness. “I… This is my fault. I apologize for everything. But this… aspect I’ve taken,” he motioned toward his purple, charred-looking pelt, “has unearthed some painful memories. Of my… time in Chaos. Of when I was nothing more than a wild beast.

“But golly, thou art shivering so much, Miss Cynthian! The weather is getting to thee? And Petram…”
Icetales frowned, then he flashed a determined stare. “…I hurt you, and now I shall fix you.”

Gathering the energy inside his body, the glimmer of hope he tucked away in the depths of his spirit, he channeled a golden energy and the pair of bells appeared in all their luminous glory. The bells dissolved in a golden mist and were absorbed by the surrounding storm, which began gleaming as it refracted the light of the healing spell. In that moment, golden snowflakes fell on the trio, carrying a soothing magic that slowly healed of their injuries.

Some golden snowflakes fell on the Ultra Stone, which started wiggling more wildly. Icetales noticed that and his heart began beating faster, feeling somewhat anxious.

A dark blob of shadow poured out of the stone, and some long tendrils burst outward. One, two, three, four, five, six… seven, eight, nine. Those were nine comet-like tails, with the tips glowing with a violet light.

Four paws sprouted from the mass of spectral energy, long and elegant, while a phantom violet energy burned on the extremities. After that, from the mass emerged a long snout, then fluffy cheeks, then long pointed vulpine ears, and lastly a long mane and two locks of comet-like dark fur.

A purple flame pulsated inside the ghostly fox’s chest, resembling a blinking northern star, and the shade opened his eyes. The pupils… even those looked like stars. It was like seeing at Icetales and at Firetales at the same time, but there were also some traces of Sir Jirachi in that new appearance.

Petram… had become a Beacon of Hope.

"I understand what you're going through, Icetales," Cynthian said, staring blankly at the barren trees stretching out in the distance. "We've both went through things in the past that have messed us up till now. Perhaps, we need to learn to let go of those experiences."

Even if Mama Rosa is still alive somewhere, maybe it's time I let go of her as well.

The past defines one's present, but a fresh layer of foundation might veer one down a better path in the future.
