@ShiniGojira
Since I've already reviewed all of JaND(and presumably cannot get a point bonus from this), I'm going to kick this off with a rec for ShiniGojira's - Just a Normal Day. I've created my own teaser for it based on my reading of it.

Lies! There was nothing normal about this day! Waking up in the world of Pokemon... In the body of a Pokemon! But which world was it? Anime, game, or manga? Was he the only one to wind up this way? But regardless of the world, a game was being played and he was just another piece on the board... A board far larger than he could possibly guess with rules known only to the player. Can a pawn oppose the hand that holds it? This pawn would do all he could to find out. And he would not be alone.

Just sliding right in over the starting line to get in some pre-sprint recommendations for those who want to hit the ground running, featuring my highlight reel from last year:

Just Hold Still by @icomeanon6

This was admittedly another one of those recommendations that I made on a leap of faith since it was based off just the first chapter, but boy did that chapter live up to the hype of what I'd heard through the grapevine for this story. So I decided to own things and let them ride for this one.

Just Hold Still is a journeyfic spanning the last few years before Bill's PC revolutionizes the ability for trainers to keep large numbers of Pokémon and communicate with each other as they travel around, back in an age when aspiring trainers had to make do with face-to-face meetings and letters left behind at Pokémon Centers. It is here that we get a glimpse of budding hobbyist photographer Luke Andersen as he sets out on his journey through Johto with his Drowzee Zoe in the fall of 1988, and cut ahead five years with to the aftermath of his failed journey, with all the friends he made in the opening scene now estranged and distant memories.

After making a decision to call things quits and focus once again on photography with his now-Hypno, Luke makes the trek out to Violet City to try and line up a few prize shots of the local Sprout Tower when much to his shock, he discovers that his once childhood love from his friend circle left a letter for him at the local Pokémon Center a little over two weeks back. When the day of happens to be said once-love's birthday. One thing leads to another as Luke isn't quite as over things as he thought and he finds himself hunting for stationery to belt out a response and the stage is set for a story showing how a journey falls apart from snapshots of the past, and how it continues to stick with people long afterwards in the present day.

The prose is very well-done and buttery smooth, with a story hook that I'm not sure if I've ever seen someone attempt in the context of a trainer journeyfic, and a world that is at once familiar and feels very alive and fleshed out. TBD if I'll have enough time to come back to this story before Review Blitz ends, but if you are hunting for a fun story to pick up a last-minute Week 1 bonus and get your foot in the door for Week 2's repeat bonus, you could honestly do a lot worse than shooting a review this fic's way.

The Foolish Oddish by @Negrek

This was actually one of those fics that I started in Week 1 of last year's Review Blitz where the only reason why I didn't mention it in my recommendation for that week was because the author wasn't new to me. Well, fortunately for me, Week 2 was focused specifically on catching up on stories we've already read, and I was fortunate enough to have the time to come back to it and give it a bit of a spotlight.

The Foolish Oddish is a three-part short story following Ragweed, who starts out as an Oddish who wants for nothing in her life as a Mystery Dungeon encounter beyond stories to collect, and Elkesiss, a fidgety and hyper Zubat with his (nonexistent) eyes set for one day seeing the world outside their dungeon through the cave exit far, far below. One thing leads to another and the two begin to form a budding friendship based on the promise of a grand tale that will last all the way to the journey to the outside world, which works swimmingly... at first.

It's a very well-done story showing life through the eyes of a character where even things we take for granted like sunsets and not having half your neighbors vanish off to parts unknown when you wake up are alien concepts, and at various points, it will make you smile and laugh, and wince and start to grow misty-eyed in others. It has a lot of worldbuilding and lorecrafting all put together for characters that would quite literally be disposable extras in most others from its genre.

Everything about the story just oozes polish, and the prose does an amazing job getting readers into the head and thought process of Ragweed while breathing what would otherwise be samey procedurally generated environments with their random encounters to life. If you're into PMD stories and have the time and energy to throw at a 12k three-parter, this one's well worth your attention.

Gathering Moss by @NebulaDreams

Alright, so a decent chunk of you might have already seen or heard of Gathering Moss since it was one of two first-place stories in 2024's onsite writing contest. From what I could see from it, the story quite earned the accolades, but let's get into the nitty-gritty of why you should read this thing:

So for the uninitiated Gathering Moss is a story about coffee, and the almost 2000-year old Golurk who soldiers on making it in a café they keep open in memory of a recently deceased trainer, up until the day they're forced to content with their own looming mortality that suddenly isn't just a distant hypothetical. So, you know, less about coffee, and more coming to terms with death, the fleeting nature of life, and its purpose. All as the hired Mogrem baker turns the kitchen in the back into a perpetual disaster zone.

For those of you who read some of @NebulaDreams ' fare in the past, you'll likely find the general contours of the world quite familiar since it's effectively a spinoff to I, Isobel, but the worldbuilding is quite imaginative, and the characterization is on-point throughout. It effortlessly weaves the past and the present together in different scenes and pulls off a surprising mix of levity and somberness with a convincing and heartfelt exploration of what it's like to realize that your days are numbered and then trying to come to terms with it.

It's a bit up there in terms of length at around 9400 words in length plus a foreword and an afterword, but nothing about the story ever feels superfluous or out of place. If you happen to have time to spare for it during Review Blitz, make a cup of coffee and dig in. Just check your eyes for stray moisture at the end.

krookodile tears by @kintsugi

krookodile tears is the story of Baku, the child of a sahnim of the Southern Stones in what is now Route 4 of Unova in a bygone age, and how through some ill-advised decision-making when trying to get a Sandile to train, he's handed over by his father to Samira, the leader of the local Krookodile who decrees that in lieu of the swift death he deserves, that Baku shall be made to live amongst them until he can learn the error of his ways.

More broadly, krookodile tears is a story about people experiencing the alien and unfamiliar, about how people react to being hurt, and the ways that they rationalize and talk themselves into the harshest of cruelties, which Baku winds up experiencing and witnessing from multiple directions amongst both the humans and Pokémon in what is now Route 4. Totally par for the course for a story that once upon a time was a chapter of The Envy of Eden before @kintsugi spun it off into its own thing.

Much like kintsugi's general portfolio, it's a haunting and melancholic ride, with a lot of love put into the folklore and breathing life into a bygone Unova that is at once very familiar and very, very different to the one we all know and love. All as we get to see a Baku's tale go through its ups and downs up to its explosive climax. It's a bit on the chunky side, with the overall fic being about 19,000 words long and the third part being hosted entirely off-site.

That said, if you can swing that much story or else even just want to get your foot in the door, it's well worth your time as a story. Just give your eyes a good rub by the end.

For those still looking for more reading material to chew on, I also have my highlight reel recommendations from Review Blitz 5 and Review Blitz 4, a similar slate from Review Blitz 3, and everything that I linked to in my post on the on-site Master's Eight thread.

I'm gonna give a special promotion for Path of Valor by @Ambyssin this Blitz. It's near the final arcs now, and will likely be finished by the time next Blitz rolls around! Not only that, but it will likely be Amby's last foray into the longfic scene as life propels him into the depths of med school and all that. I wanna try to get more love for the fic on its final blitz where it'll be actively written!

For those worried that it won't be finished: Amby has already drafted the entirety of the last of the fic, and it's just being beta read and released weekly. I know that has little to do with the fic itself, but in the environment of fanfics, "The fic is already drafted and queued for release in full" is an incredibly rare security.

As for what it's about: It's a very unique combination of elements from a lot of other franchises, while still remaining entirely Pokemon in its cast. If you ever read Guiding Light and how it was almost entirely Pokemon in cast, but still had ample Kirby elements subtly and overtly included, then Path of Valor is the same thing but for elements of Final Fantasy, Bayonetta, and other franchises I'm less aware of. It starts with a simple "Academy plot" of a foreign student of Dragons coming to a world of Fairies, and the feeling of being out of place only gets crazier from there as the plot evolves into world- and dimension-hopping shenanigans to take on: a tyrannical Deoxys, a zombie Necrozma, and someone who claims to have grasped the hands of Fate itself.

The prose is very approachable and casual, snappy while keeping the story moving forward. Chapters are relatively short for the PMD scene, so you can Tetris Effect them easily, for you binge readers. And every few chapters once the world-hopping begins is a new world or environment to explore, new foes to take on, and plenty of character interaction between a core cast and many support characters and friends made along the way.

@Tango 's TCG Doduo Adventures

What do you get when you take the idea of a Let's Play, a novelization, and a diary fic then blend that all up with a base of the Gameboy TCG game, then as a dash of Doduo and a lot of Sycther? You get a fantastic game-fic that takes the "world" from the Gameboy TCG card game and takes it at least somewhat seriously. We follow our MC, The Gentleman, who is the Champion of his island. But he has a teensy problem as island champion - he's too good, and nobody wants to battle him! So he hatches a plan to use all common cards (for the noobs, thats like using unevovled pokemon!) and rematch everyone on his island.

Simple, right?

Until you start to uncover mysteries, conspiracies, suffer betrayals from friends and heartbreak from the ones you loved. And have to deal with one very stubborn and strange Doduo who refuses to stop following you.

I am not even halfway through this fic and its been both hilarious and heartfelt and has intrigue. The world is crazy but taken seriously and I've really enjoyed the mix of outlandish and level. Also I found the duels and strategy's fun to read. Would recommend to fans of Let's Plays and the TCG games in general.

@Slayerofthewind 's International Celebrity Ruins Everything

Ok look, I haven't played the games this fic references... I looked up Wiki summaries instead. But you know what? It doesn't matter! This fic breathes so much life into the characters that you don't need anything more than summaries to greatly enjoy it!

Serena the Champion took things easy after becoming Champion due to trauma from being forced to save the world at a young age, but complacency has consequences as her trip back to Kalos shows. As for what got her to come back? Ridiculousness of a certain homeless ancient-fashioned giant opening a hotel! Serena is unable to resist seeing what was going on. And then there is Urbain. Oblivious and deceptively charming marketing extraordinaire! Don't mind the Hotel has no guests, it's the best in the region, no the WORLD! Watch as Serena battles with her original high-powered Champion team to hilarious results! These characters have style. Also, don't cross the flower of almighty doom. Getting hit with that laser is probably not good for one's health...

Start a company to build and sell custom Porygon! That's what you get when a rich daddy's girl with a need to prove herself teams up with a neurotic Porygon blogger. But it would not be without its share of steps, setbacks, and sacrifice.

Guys, this fic walks you through the process of starting a Porygon Pokemon business in the illustrious Saffron city of Kanto! It will make you feel like you are on the team with them or maybe overseeing the work! You get to see things from a professional POV and a personal POV and it swaps between Cassandra and Emily, but only in between chapters. Lots of character and charm!

Rating: 16+ (Contains some light swearing and some mentions of violence and injuries, both for human and Pokemon characters.)
The fic's 16+ rating seems a bit overkill in my opinion, I have read up to around chapter 20 and I haven't found any parts of the fic that were too much for me. As someone under 16, is it alright for me to still read and comment on the fic like I have done before?

NEO-A-LIFE by @Goolix

Actually fantastic story. It's not terribly far yet, but what's out of it is of extremely high quality, meaning I have faith that many different kinds of readers will find it enjoyable even if they wouldn't be into the premise. The premise in question: two women start a company to make custom Porygon. It's not your average journeyfic or PMDfic, but people who know me will know that's only a plus for me.

What's also a plus for me is that the manufacturing process for the Porygon isn't just some magical thing that's offscreen but rather down-and-dirty code wrangling. So, to the many software engineers or otherwise tech-oriented people I know are on this forum, please check this one out. Provided you're not too traumatized from your day job, lol.

That's not to say that you should give this one a skip if you aren't a tech whizz! From what I've seen of the other reviews, you can still follow along well if you don't have much IT experience. Think of how you can follow along in a Star Trek episode despite the technobabble due to contextual clues.

So, yeah. That's my recommendation. Hope it gets someone to check this gem out!

Weekly Fic Rec:
"The Foolish Oddish" - @Negrek

This story in three parts has stuck in my mind since I read it. An exploration of the inner world of a Pokemon living in a dungeon - that endlessly shifting habitat that we take for granted in the Mystery Dungeon games. No prior Mystery Dungeon knowledge is needed, though of course it helps. Our protagonist, an Oddish, is trying to make her way through the dungeon collecting stories (for what else lasts in a world where you can always be tossed into an entirely new situation with the turn of a back?) when she runs into a Zubat who tells her there's a way out of the dungeon. Both entranced and afraid, she follows the Zubat through the dungeon, who repays her company with an astonishing story. Written with deft prose and compassion, this three-parter is a meditation on impermanence, stoicism, and the role that stories play in making us feel coherent even when nothing else can be taken for granted.

Alright, I've been hitting the grindstone hard for Week 1, but with less than a day to go, I figured that it was about time for me to hunker down and pick out a proper recommendation:

Weekly Fic Rec: Week 1

NEO-A-LIFE by @Goolix

This one was preaching to the choir a bit by the time I got around to writing this recommendation, but the buzz around the story was very well-deserved, and the premise hit one of my soft spots as an author, so good enough. But NEO-A-LIFE is the story of Cassandra, a programmer who works a dead-end job and in her free time, works on her real passion: trying to reverse-engineer the source code to Porygon as part of an open source project in the hopes of synthesizing new Porygon years after the project that spawned its entire evolutionary line was left behind as abandonware by Silph Co.

One day, Cassandra gets a cold solicitation from Emily LeVant, the similarly Porygon-enamored founder of the titular NEO-A-LIFE that has gotten its mitts on the original Porygon source code and seeks to make a new generation of custom, tailor-made Porygon for clients. One thing leads to another, and Cassandra finds herself thrust into the world of tech startups, trying to figure out a way forward towards her dreams of creating new Porygon with naught but some ancient source code, some questionable funding, and her and her coworkers' stubborn determination.
It's a lovely piece that does a great job capturing the vibe of life as a software engineer and in a tech startup seeking to hang on to the next round of funding, while keeping the content approachable for a general audience. Also, it has a lot of love and care devoted to Porygon with an exploration into its species lore, what might have caused it to become abandonware, and the hurdles and ethical questions along the way for trying to create Digimon virtual life shaped like polygonal drinking birds.

The chapters are also nice and approachably-sized, with the longest one currently posted clocking in at roughly 3200 words. It's a great companion for those evenings where you're a bit tight on time or energy and highly recommended if you have a background or even an general interest in programming and tech.

Flames & Roses by @Arbee

This one is definitely on the grittier side of things, with Pokemon easily getting injured with some very graphic injuries, and also succumbing to them even within the first few chapters. However, the writing is very descriptive, especially in the prologue chapter, which impressed me with how the author was able to depict a very perilous encounter.

Because it's a prologue, you have no real way to give suspense or grounding to the reader on an emotional level for these characters, but in terms of the play by play suspense of "Will this person make it, or will they die and this is a prologue's alternative perspective?" or some such works to the advantage of the story.

Even if it may not be your genre, I think it's worth reading to see the mechanics behind some sea combat in particular. I don't see that too often.

Weekly rec Week 1:

International celebrity ruins everything by @Slayerofthewind

Choosing this week's recommendation was pretty hard, but in the end I choose this one because it's a great fic about the latest game, ZA, that takes the plot completely seriously and gives it a lot more depth by the simple addiction of making the main character the protagonist of XY instead of a random nobody. Even just by reading the first chapter, it completely changes the dynamics with some other characters (first of all giving a very personal connection to AZ) and introduces insights and has Serena making connections made really only possible by her.
The writing uses a third person omniscient narrator, which makes it pretty fun.
If someone is looking for a ZA fic that looks promising in getting into a lot of details and characterization of all its characters, I suggest checking it out!

Week 1 recommendation: Pokemon - TCG2: Doduo Adventures - Book One: TCG Island by @Tango

Do you have a craving to read a Pokemon fic that DOESN'T take from the anime or mainline video games? Are you feeling a bit nostalgic for people settling disputes by challenging each other to card games? Do you want something that will make you smile and tug at your heartstrings within the same scene? If so, TCG2: Doduo Adventures may be just the thing for you! Tango draws from the Pokemon: TCG video game for Gameboy Color as the basis for writing this fic and is very original and creative. It follows the 28-year-old protagonist who has become SO good at dueling, that nobody wants to challenge him to duels anymore! Faced with the problem of whether to sell the house with the mortgage he'd just finish paying off, he resorts instead to self-imposed restrictions on his duels so that he can earn money to buy himself food instead of giving up his home. This story is highly relatable, funny, and includes emotional gut punches on occasion. It is well worth a read!

Ranked Gen

A lovely, slow moving piece from Origin(maybe?) Green's POV that details, first his budding friendship, then his growing infatuation with his rival, Red.

Greens got it all, good looks, a killer team, enough confidence to fuel Cerulean's Power Plant... Red, near wallflower, and Charizard dork had none of that. Didn't stop the guy from taking on evil syndicates, saving the world, and smacking Green's shiny CHAMPION title from his hands mere minutes after he'd won it.

It also did not make it easier to talk to the guy after he mossies down from Mt. Silver after a year-long 'mon enhancing sabbatical. At first, it felt coincidental. The guy didn't even have a phone. Green bumped into Red here and there, then Lydia, Johto's champion, started laying down hints and setting up ambushes. Then comes a short sorrie into the ruins of Alph. Nothing big, it wasn't like Green was scared of ghosts, like those at Violet's Tower that'd made him a wreck. And he wasn't scared of Legends; there wasn't a Legend for miles. Things went as expected, for a tiny sliver of time. Suffice to say, events don't stay sane or mundane for long. And from the ensuing excitement, their long-denied affection shines through.

Flyg0n - Legendary Adventures -
Set in Sinnoh six years after the fall of Galactic, this fic follows Koamaru - Koa for short - on an epic trainer journey to catch legendary Pokemon! He knew just how to do it, too. But Koa wasn't about to keep some random common mon. A Zubat had no business on his dream team. It would have to go. But what would give out first? Koa's determination, or Zubat's optimism?

This fic has been a great read so far! Such a fantastic trainer fic. If you like those at all, you really need to check this out. I've only read through Chapter 8, but I can tell I'm going to want to read this to the end.

Non-weekly Fic Rec:

Ok guys, I've just finished a large section of:
K_S - Roost, a gift fic

A fic set in the Manga.

The world was mad! A guy who tried to laser the entire world and another guy who kidnapped and tortured kids were given free passes by the so-called heroes.

Green wasn't going to smile and nod. She took Silver and got the heck out of there. But back home with her parents, she faced delusions of a different kind. Ones that pushed Silver to leave the comfort of her home.

That made things rather awkward when Giovanni called looking for Silver. It wasn't as though she agreed to care for Silver - though she would have anyway - but Green knew that Giovanni being so quick to leave ruined everything. Something Green would point out at every opportunity.

Nothing about this was typical, but if Giovanni wanted a relationship with his son, he would have to play Greens game. But not even high stakes games with mob bosses would deter Green from reuniting with Silver.

Hey guys, I also wanted to put another of these out here for a fic I have immensely enjoyed:
Nekodatta 's Timeslip

I've only read 8 chapters of this so far, but this fic has an amazing premise, spot-on characters, and a slow burn romance that pushes every romance button I have! :wowzard: By the way, I am a huge fan of romance, but only if it's done right.

I'd call this the de-facto romance fic here on TR. I have yet to encounter a fic that does romance as well as this. Hilariously, I've never even played the games it's based on! It's that good!

The premise: Turo from the distant future stumbles way farther back in time than anyone thought possible and meets Sada from the ancient past. From the very moment they meet, this fic explores all the nuances of them learning to communicate with each other while swapping perspectives so you can see the events from both perspectives! And man does it get funny and endearing to see those perspectives! :mewlulz: It's so delightfully creative in the ways it explores the worlds of the future and past too. This series is a gem among gems and I can see why Nekodatta has been running with it for so long.

I greatly look forward to exploring every nuance, scene, and moment in this beautifully crafted series. If the rest of the series is even half as good as these first eight chapters have been, it will be well worth the read.

I put some thought into who to give the honors to this week and had a bit of trouble since the stories I read this week in general were all very deserving of the time and attention, but I decided to give the honors to one I liked that's flow a little under the radar here on Thousand Roads:

Weekly Fic Rec: Week 2

The Legacy of Light: Sword by @JFought

I'll admit that I'm going a bit out on a limb on this one since I'm still very early on in the story, but The Legacy of Light: Sword is the tale of Bertrand, the Charmeleon child of a pair of blacksmiths living in the town of Courière in the land of Liber with dreams of becoming an adventurer... that are currently struggling a bit to get off the ground thanks to the whole 'needing a team' part. One day, Bertrand comes across a mysterious Vulpix that comes in from the boonies and gets into some trouble in town. A mysterious Vulpix with mysterious abilities that only nobles descended from the mythical Ten Kings of Liber are supposed to have. One thing leads to another, as Bertrand finds himself getting roped together with said Vulpix and an aspiring med student from afar currently stuck in limbo in his town and getting a chance to finally chase his dreams in a big and open world waiting for them to step out into it.

Those of you who have read some of JFought's other works like Searching for a Resolution or The Myriad Investigations of Detective Oscar may already be familiar with Liber since they all share a setting, but the story does a great job at building a world that feels alive with a rich and layered history where thar be rebellions against mankind and ancient magic that makes Liber's existence in the present day possible. The characters are charming and engaging to see bounce off each other and the world that they live in, with the story as a whole oozing the sort of love and care that only a passion project can have.

If you're into PMD-style stories and willing to swing some beefier chapters, poke your head into this one or one of its companion works and take a gander. It's a bit of an unsung story on the site at the moment, but it has all the makings of a quite special experience with a lot of promise for the future.
