This was my submission to the one-shot contest of 2025, posted now on TR! I might end up writing an updated version of it later, but for now, that has not been decided.
Lisia was walking along route 115, going towards Rustboro City for her first contest. She had learned a lot about pokemon contests from her uncle Wallace, who was not only a contest star but also the Sootopolis City gym leader. She was excited, yet somewhat nervous. After all, she was not well prepared. She hadn’t even decided what pokemon she would use.
In fact, to make things worse she didn’t even have a pokemon of her own yet. Her uncle had borrowed her a Lotad named Lily so that she could use it to battle and catch her first pokemon. But considering the contest she felt it was somewhat unfair to use a pokemon that wasn’t her own. So she would have to catch a pokemon before the contest started, and that would happen in a few hours.
As the clock was ticking, she needed to come up with something fast. Would she just have to catch the first pokemon she came across, regardless of how well it would fare? Or would she have to use Lily, even if she felt it could be considered cheating?
Suddenly, she could feel something gently landing on her head. As she looked up, she saw the face of a small blue bird-like pokemon with fluffy white wings that resembled clouds. She looked at it with her pokedex, discovering that it was a normal and flying type pokemon named Swablu.
She realized this was the perfect opportunity for her to catch the Swablu, as it didn’t even seem to be scared of her. While she herself hadn’t battled before, she had watched her uncle battle as a gym leader.
“Go, Lily! Use Water Gun!”
The Lotad squirted a blast of water missing the Swablu but hitting Lisia’s face instead. The Swablu seemed curious but didn't move from Lilia’s head. All wet, Lisia commanded the Lotad to attack again, and this time the attack managed to hit the Swablu and allowed her to catch it. To be sure of the catch she threw her luxury ball at the Swablu. The ball shook once, then twice, and finally a third time.
Now that Lisia had caught a new pokemon, she needed to come up with a nickname. After thinking about it for a little bit, she decided on nicknaming it Ali. It was a name she was proud of, as it sounded like Altaria, the pokemon Ali would eventually evolve into. Ali seemed to enjoy its new name too, as it nodded its head.
She let Ali follow her outside the pokeball to get to know it better. It immediately went back to sitting on her head, almost like a fluffy hat. This gave her an idea for the contest. Speaking of the contest, it was going to happen soon, and if she didn’t hurry, she would be late.
Lisia entered the contest hall only a few minutes before the contest would start. She signed up for the cuteness contest, as she felt Ali was a cute pokemon.
“Welcome to the cuteness contest, everybody! Our competitors will be using cute pokemon to impress the audience, and the contestant with the cutest pokemon wins the prize of a Mega evolution stone! Isn’t that cute?” The announcer said from the speakers.
Lisia was slightly nervous. Her opponents had a selection of really cute pokemon, but if her plan worked, she could be able to win. However, she didn’t have time to think for particularly long, as the announcer spoke again.
“The first contestant to enter the stage will be Lisia and Ali!”
Lisia walked to the stage, Ali gently sitting on her head like a cute and fluffy hat. It was an adorable sight, making the audience give an applause to her.
“Showcase a cute move with your pokemon, Lisia!” The announcer encouraged.
“Ali, use Sing!”
Ali began singing a gentle and cute melody, and the audience applauded her once again. The concept of a young girl with a singing pokemon hat was adorable.
After the other contestants showcased their pokemon’s cuteness, it was finally time to see the results.
“The contest winner is… Lisia and Ali! Congratulations!”
Lisia was so proud of herself. She had won a contest alongside her newly caught pokemon, and now, she was getting a prize. To say she was excited would be an understatement.
She was given a small box, holding inside something amazing. As she opened the box, she saw a Mega evolution stone, specifically an Altarianite. She took the stone to be her treasure. Perhaps in the future she could even use it for Mega evolving Ali. But that would take a long time, as Ali would first have to evolve into an Altaria. There was still a long way to go.
