"I'm not broken. I'm evolved!" Ivy said, folding her arms. To prove that, she once again tried to stand up and just barely managed a wobbly float.

"See? I'm already getting the hang of i—" And she fell on her face again and took another mouthful of sand. She raised her face and spat it all out. "This is kind of fun!"

We certainly have different definitions of what constitutes fun...

"I am... err... glad you're happy with this. Though you might want to let one of us carry you when we go back home. I wouldn't want to leave you here not knowing how to move properly..."

Petram tilted his head, looking unconvinced. “Huuuh… I admit I don’t know much about Roselia and their evolutions, so I don’t know if they have some split ghostly version or something.”

He paused for a while as Soul spoke, before nodding. “Yeah, maybe it would be better if we carried you. I mean, you don’t want to drag yourself back home, right?”

 

[Adamhuarts]

"No wait, I can learn to float just like you!" Ivy frantically flailed her roses and puffed her chest. She pushed herself upward and proceeded with a hop. Once again she wobbled steadily, only to fall on her back this time.

"Who needs legs when you can float?" she said, with her arms folded.

Petram blinked. “Float like me? Oh, but that’s easy!”

He puffed his chest with confidence. “The only thing you need to do it’s to forget about such simple natural concepts, like gravity. Pretend that it doesn’t exist, and,” he did a somersault, ending up hovering at a few centimeters from the sand, “ta-dah! One of the cool things about being a shade: you can bend some rules, and that’s awesome!”

After that little show, he floated back down and wagged his tails. “Now try! Remember: gravity doesn’t exist! But don’t pretend too much — we don’t want you to float away like a balloon, after all!”

Think like gravity doesn't apply...

Soul tried to take a step up, as if there was a staircase in front of her. Her foot still passed through the imagined stair, and she remained ground-bound. Not like that, I guess...

 

[Adamhuarts]

"Whoa! That was so swell, Petram!" Ivy chirped while clapping her flowers. So, all she had to do was pretend there's no gravity? That made things so much easier!

"I'm gonna give it a try now!" Ivy puffed her cheeks and her eyes glowed brighter. She pictured herself being like a cloud, or a dandelion drifting with the breeze. Slowly, but surely, she began to float steadily. This time, she didn't keel over and fall.

"Petram, Soul, look, look! I'm actually doing it!" Ivy said, flapping her arms excitedly. "The Great and Mighty Ivy is flying now!!!"

“…Did that really work?” whispered Petram to himself, before blinking and standing to his hind paws. “I mean! Yay! You did it, Ivy!”

He clapped his forepaws and grinned happily. It was nice to see Ivy so happy about something.

“Now we can both be pilots! Isn’t that the coolest things ever?” He turned to Soul. “Hey, Soul! You’re invited to the fun, too!”

Soul jumped and tried to expect not to come down, but she never really believed it would work, and so she was unsurprised when gravity pulled her back down again.

She swallowed nervously. "I... don't know if I can."

 

[Adamhuarts]

"Come on, Soul! You've got this!" Ivy said, patting Soul's jelly shoulder. "We believe in you!"

“I think this is because you’re thinking too hard about trying to do that, Soul,” said Petram, before pointing at the clouds. “Do you think that clouds think they can fall down? No. They simply float.”

Then, he closed his eyes and began rubbing his forehead, a relaxed expression on his face. “Just relax… clear your mind and take a deep breath. Remember that you aren’t bound by the laws of physics…” He tilted his head, wondering if that was actually true. “Or, well, not all of them.”

Soul sat down and pulled her tails over herself, feeling self-conscious. "I am bound by gravity, though, if only because I don't know how not to be. I don't know how to forcibly change my expectations. But I'll be fine, you two have fun being... pilots."

Petram crossed his forepaws, looking pensively at Soul. "But having fun in two isn't as much fun as having fun in three. If you can't escape gravity," he sat down on the floor, looking determined, "then I will not escape gravity, either. We can have some fun close to the floor, too!" He glanced at Ivy. "Right? Can we stay close to the floor for a while? You can still hover, if you wish."

 

[Adamhuarts]

"Fine by me!" Ivy said while spinning in place like a stop. She just kept going and going... It didn't look like she knew how to stop.

Her friends were willing to do that for her. On the surface, she knew and recognized that... but it didn't stop her from feeling like she was keeping them from enjoying flight. They shouldn't have to stay groundbound just because she couldn't figure it out.

Soul resisted the urge to bury their face in their tails. "You don't have to hold yourselves back for me..."

Still... Soul knew they would, that they were willing to. She just still felt better having said it, so that she could be sure they knew they could go fly if they wanted to.

 

[Adamhuarts]

Ivy somehow stopping herself from spinning further and she hovered to Soul, shaking her head with folded arms. "That's not true! Best friends always stick together!"

 

[Cresselia92]

“That’s right! What kinda friends we would be to leave you behind, huh? Horrible friends, I’m telling you!” exclaimed Petram, planting his tails firmly on the floor. “I know I’d feel bad having fun without you, Soul. And I bet it’s the same for Ivy here.”

He beamed a bright grin of shadows, wagging his tails. “We can soar the skies anytime. This time will be dedicated to spending time with my two best friends, and I refuse to accept anything else!”

 

[Shiny Phantump]

Soul smiled. "I understand. I just wanted to make sure you knew I wouldn't mind you flying around me... Shall we move along to doing something fun, then?"

 

[Adamhuarts]

"We'll do whatever you want!" Ivy chirped, floating over Soul's head and perching on her mane.

"Lead the way, Soul!"

"Oh, yeah! I'm fine with whatever, really!"

Petram bolted toward Soul, before rubbing his cheek against one of her forelegs. His tails sparked with some spectral flames, which made him slightly warmer. "C'mon! There is so much we can do, and we don't need to fly for that, either!"
