Starr listened to Astrid talk, saying nothing for the longest time. She wasn't sure what she was waiting for. Some moment, some epiphany that would make everything clear? But no, they didn't get to have that. Just a big, muddled mess of mistaken assumptions, layered one on top of the other. She felt momentary prickles of anger (Cynthian? Brisa? Did every past mistake have to get dragged in front of her face?) but then... Then it all came back to that day on the beach.

You tried to explain. You told her it was personal bullshit that had nothing to do with her.

And you were angry she wanted to know, and angry that she was scared, and you refused to say anything else.

It all felt so stupid now. So pointless. Fitting that the truth wouldn't come out in some big dramatic moment. Just the two of them, broken and miserable in the snow.

"You wanna know why I freaked out when we first met?" Starr asked quietly. She wasn't looking at Astrid, so she couldn't see if the fox had nodded, or if she was even paying attention, but. "It's not like you fucking did anything, you just... reminded me of something. Someone. From my world." A pause, then: "Who I used to be."

"It's not like you fucking did anything, you just... reminded me of something. Someone. From my world." A pause, then: "Who I used to be."

Who you used to be…

The surge of power came almost instantly this time, with hardly an uncomfortable grace period to speak of. The Inspiration cast foreign thoughts across Astrid’s mind, but one stuck out among them all: one that Astrid herself did not understand, but pulled at her heart nonetheless.

“You’re a lousy father…” she muttered.

Astrid frowned. Was she Giovanni’s…?

No. She couldn’t be sure of something like that. She could draw power from others, even feel what they’re feeling, but she could not read minds. Not on a surface level, or any level. Ridiculous. She’d have sooner asked for antigravity than something as invasive as that.

But. If it were true…

…did it matter?

“If you say so. I don’t think it’s right to hold one another accountable for things in our old worlds—it feels necessary for this adventure. For this mission. But that’s just me. I won’t try to convince you how to label yourself. It’ll hardly matter in a few hours anyway, y’know?”

Everyone had something to run from, it seemed. Starr was no different. She’d gunned for Giovanni the moment he appeared. One way or another, she’d known who he was before the others had. Hmm…

For some time, Astrid looked at Starr, whose gaze had trailed off idly into the forest.

“…Mmm. I didn’t mean to dig that up,” she finally said, breaking the silence. And then she felt dumb, because Starr obviously knew as much. “But if you thought I might prod further, I’m not going to do that anymore. I-if it makes you uncomfortable. It’s all part of another timeline anyway.”

How would she have liked it if she’d been bugged about her family so early on? She thought of her mother, her father… and grimaced. A crippling weight settled on her heart—yes, somehow, after how the day had gone, it was possible to feel worse. But there was no one, no ethereal force, no dire circumstances, to blame this time.

“Guess I missed the hint, huh?” Astrid forced herself to chuckle. But it came out dry, without enthusiasm. Swallowing the lump in her throat, her voice hardly rose above a whisper. “My bad. Working on that.”

Starr had been bracing herself. Waiting for the moment, willing herself to swallow the bile and explain, as much as she hated the idea of sharing that ugly truth with anyone again, especially someone who...

But the moment didn't come. Astrid was just... willing to let it go.

"Sounds like we both didn't want things to go like that," Starr said lowly. The mire of shame and frustration was slowly ebbing away from her mind and she mostly just felt... tired. All the people she would have wanted to vent to were gone, and dealing with those feelings alone was exhausting.

The wind was starting to blow. Starr's inner fire had kept the cold at bay so far, but it was slowly starting to settle in the longer they sat in the snow. The snowflakes blowing into her face didn't help much either.

Making up her mind, Starr stood upright and shook the snow from her legs. Then she gestured to Astrid and said, "Come on. It's been long enough. They owe us an update. We're..." She paused, throat clenching. "We're getting our friends back."

Astrid got to her feet and stretched, wincing as one of her legs failed to wake up properly. (She supposed exploding probably wasn’t good for her circulation).

“Right.”

She took a hesitant step back towards the city, freezing there. But Starr seemed insistent, and Astrid concluded that it really shouldn’t be that difficult to do this. They knew how to get their friends back—to an extent. They just had to do it. They could brute force it if they had to. They could do anything if it meant saving their friends. Astrid believed that.

“We can’t ever stop. We can’t give any ground on this one.” They made eye contact, and Astrid knew—Starr believed it too.

They spent a while walking back, until finally, Destiny Village sprawled out in front of them. It lit up the evening sky with its golden glare. Astrid gazed unwaveringly.

Time for Team Spectrum to start making some decisions.

It had taken a few days, and it was a long and sow recovery, but eventually Diyem had become strong enough earn a discharge from Zinc. The first thing he did, of course, was get away, saying that he wanted not only a change of scenery, but to get away from the nurturing care that Zinc had been providing. Nobody really tried to stop him.

Very convenient.

Everyone. Meet me in the northern pine forest at noon. I will send another message later. Bring nobody. Whoever's Ultra Shade has Cola, get them to send him off to someone else. There is something important I have to discuss.

Though, granted, it was very likely that everybody knew little tidbits by now about what was going on.

And so, the little Charmander stood and waited, arms crossed while he sat atop a conjured hammock of Shadows between two branches. He had given up some time ago on looking foreboding while stuck in such a weak form. Several had asked him why he had been a Charmander specifically, but he never gave a specific answer.

"That's enough people for now. I see a few others walking along." He squinted into the distance, then looked down at the team.

"Is this about the Tree? Is this why you're so far out in the woods?" Cal asked, arms crossed. The Charmeleon flicked her tail, still a little on-edge ever since that incident in Moonlit Forest a few days ago, but... at least Diyem wasn't out of sorts anymore.

"Yes. I have a lot to go over. And I also wanted to demonstrate something I am now capable of, now that some of my strength is back. Several of your team are waiting to be summoned to the living world as phantoms... Not the best, not very solid, but enough that they can communicate. The hope is that I will be strong enough to give them more solid, temporary bodies should we need them for battle... and, ideally, the Tree can be used to restore their bodies completely."

"Well, that seems straightforward. Maple's gonna allow you to go to the Tree and talk to Xerneas, you can maybe take a little bit of that power, and that's it, right?" Cal tilted her head. "What's the big deal?"

"Let me summon them first, for now."

Diyem clasped his hands together, still sitting on his Shadow hammock, and then made a waving motion forward, as if sweeping the view before him. Spectral shapes conjured from nothing, wisps of darkness that clumped together before growing little ember eyes and limbs... He did that for several of them--those who were on standby, a few who looked around uncertainly, and others who waved. They were floating, free from gravity, but they were present. Their voices were distant, distorted whispers.

Diyem grunted when the first thing that happened was a rush of everyone trying to talk to them even as their bodies started to form. "Stop, stop, stop," he shouted, and then threatened to disappear the phantoms right then. "I am still recovering. An outpouring of love when I'm not ready will hospitalize me again. Back away. We are strategizing. Now..."

"Where's... Owen?" Cal asked, frowning.

"He is busy with something else," Diyem said dismissively. "But I expect he will be ready soon. They are all listening to this conversation anyway."

Cal didn't seem very satisfied, but she said nothing.

As more of Team Spectrum arrived and materialized, Diyem finally opened.

"It goes without saying that the Tree may not have enough power to do everything we want," he started. "I know the Tree from experience and I have spent enough time here to know what powers are needed for what. We need four things. First, to restore Arceus to good health. Second, perhaps to give Cola some power so he is not so vulnerable. Third, to bring back your allies. And fourth, to restore my power. From what I know about the Tree..." He looked gravely at them. "I think only two of these choices can be made, and the other two will need to be neglected. And if we do this to the Tree, we will run out of so-called 'backup power' should we need it for the future. We simply do not know.

"Most of this will be discussed with Maple, Arceus, and certainly Xerneas. But we have bargaining power here. They need us to fight Giovanni and what plans he has. Therefore, we need to have our stories and our demands consistent across the team, now, before we go there formally.

"And in order for us to do that..." Diyem closed his eyes, sighing. "I need to tell you something that they yet do not know. I do not know if sharing this with them will help, hurt, or completely destroy our chances."

He waited until he was certain they were all paying attention. Then:

"I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that Eternatus is deep within the Tree's core. And if we want to stop the Blacklight, we will have to infiltrate the Tree, and possibly destroy it with the very power we are going to siphon away. We won't be strong enough to do it now... I'm certain. But this visit will help us scout out its power. If we can siphon its power, perhaps we can also weaken Eternatus.

"But the debate here is what we ask, what we say, and what we keep to ourselves. As a team."

Bahamut was silent throughout the explanation. He wasn’t sure how much his dead teammates knew about Joule’s fate. Did they know what he did? Would they even care?

No, this wasn’t the time for such thoughts. Having read the book with Pleo, Bahamut now had a better idea of just how large the tree was. So something about Diyem’s last claim struck him as off.

“Wait a second. Wasn’t Eternatus the reason we originally were sent here?” He loomed over Diyem and cast a shadow across the phantoms. “Why do we need to destroy the Tree? Wouldn’t that free Eternatus? We need to kill it.”

“... wonderful.” Bahamut frowned. “And we have no way of knowing if the whole Tree is corrupted until we scout it. Because we shouldn’t do any of those options unless we can be absolutely sure Eternatus’ energy won’t corrupt anyone.”

"I am operating under the assumption that the outer perimeter of the Tree is safe," Diyem said. "I suspect that only the core is truly corrupted. Otherwise, even the natives would have probably noticed something so obvious... especially after the crisis not even a generation ago. Though, that may also further limit our options on how much energy we can draw..."

"You seem to know a lot about how to handle Eternatus," Cal said, frowning. "Have some experience?"

"Yes." Diyem looked to the others. "What does everyone else think? In fact, Bahamut had been proposing that we tell Maple anyway... but I personally fear that so much as hinting at Team Spectrum attacking the Tree could bar us from entering it entirely. I am Dark Matter..."

"I think Maple, the rest of God Squad and Arceus have a right to know," Cynthian said, her wispy flower body swaying back like a tree in a gentle breeze.

"We cannot earn their trust by hiding things from them even if we think we're in the right." She paused, and her ember eyes dimmed.

"We'd ruin what little trust we've built to this point if we start acting behind other people's back." Her eyes lit back up when they fell on Diyem, and she seemed to nod, though hard to tell. "Yes, you're dark matter, but you've already shown honesty in trying to keep this world safe. For the most part."

Celeste furrowed his brow. "Augh, that sure is a tight spot..."

Tell Maple, she flips out and may very well kill someone. Don't tell Maple, she finds out, and so may very well kill someone. Thus far, they'd gotten along with Maple because their interests has always been aligned. Maple had made it quite clear early on that she'd be willing to off anyone who stepped out of line, and this would quite likely meet Maple's definition of "out of line." Maple not knowing would be a disaster, but so would them telling her.

"What if someone else tells Maple? She has teammates, she can be their problem instead... Say, is Joule getting any better? I-I haven't been to the infirmary since- in a while..." Icetales...

"Err, Joule. He owes his life to our team, and bears some responsibility for the deaths of those we are trying to recover. I would expect him to be much more receptive than Maple, and then it can be his job to tell her. She'll be more likely to listen to him, anyways. If Joule is still out cold, perhaps Truffle?"

"Is Eternatus sapient?" Cynthian asked, followed by her drooping her petals and perking them back up.

"What I mean is if they can understand reason, then perhaps they could be bargained with." Cynthian swayed to the side and perched on a rock. "Unless they're butt loaded with blacklight corruption, here's hoping they aren't, then maybe we could listen to their demands and work something out that'll make them leave the tree and we'd not have to destroy it."

Cynthian squinted and appeared to shake her head. "It's probably not going to work... but I'm just throwing that idea out there."

Tempest listened quietly, taking in the discussion so far. When Bahamut finished talking, he stepped forward. Nip was not here yet, so he would need to offer his own advice, but also interpret what he thought Nip would do, as well. "if I may request clarity... We are not planning to attack the tree now, correct? If that's the case, what's stopping us from telling Maple after we scout it, so that we have a clearer picture of how bad things might be?" He paused and sat down, humming thoughtfully. "Then again... things could go very, very wrong while we're there..."

He paused, letting those words hang in the air. "As for what we need to choose to do... I believe our first priority should be healing Arceus." He took a moment to sweep his gaze over the team, his gaze lingering on those that were not shades. "You all came here to help Cibus, correct? Then our priority should be healing Arceus."

Kate blinked through the proceedings as half of the topics at hand might as well have been talked about in Hightongue with how lost she got. So there was this tree on the planet directly related to the ability of everything on it to live that a really strong Pokémon parasitizing it that'd probably be about as inviting as Joule when he'd lost his mind and put them all in this position to begin with. Oh, and trying to drive it out might kill off the tree and the entire planet, no pressure at all there.

"I mean, whatever we do, our priority should be to get our friends back from it. I dunno about whether it's a better idea to help Diyem or Arceus afterwards, though. If we help one, would it be possible for him to help the other get his powers back somehow?"

Kate frowned and shook her head.

"As for Maple, I'm not too hot on the idea of trying to pull a fast one on a 'mon who's that strong if we don't have to. It just feels like it's a mess waiting to happen making an enemy of someone that powerful. That said, if she's really going to keep us out of the tree if she knows what we're up to, I'm not sure if we have a choice..."

Kate moved a claw to her mouth and thought the matter over a moment. Surely there had to be something they could do other than such a binary choice off the bat... though maybe...

"I think I'm leaning towards that suggestion of having Joule try to feel things out for us. Basically have him go up, say that he had a nightmare of Eternatus being in the Tree of Life, and see how she'd react to the idea of letting other Pokémon in to try and check up on it for him. If she shoots the idea down to her mate, we'll know off the bat that we should just keep our mouths shut and work around her."

Bahamut stayed silent while others spoke. His massive frame dwarfed everyone on the team, even some of the phantoms that had gained some newfound verticality. It some respects, he wondered if his presence was going to draw unwanted attention toward the forest and opted to coil himself around some trees for safety's sake.

However, the instinct to uncoil and, phantom or not, throttle Cynthian popped up the moment she made her suggestion. As if there was any reasoning to be had with a parasite. Had she sleepwalked through the fight with Darkwhite? No amount of blacklight energy could keep an individual safe from Eternatus' corruption. This was absolutely a "shoot to kill" situation.

... so why was Diyem insistent on breaking the Tree before killing it if killing it inside the Tree would just break it in a different way? It was fucked either way. Why free it? Why offer it a minute possibility that it could flee or use the extra space to grow bigger... or even get captured by Giovanni in a poké ball? Pressing Diyem on that subject was just going to derail everything. That didn't mean he couldn't attempt to privately probe the issue. Hadn't Diyem hesitated about this back at the infirmary?

"Why do I get the feeling there's still something you're refusing to tell us?" Telepathy would have to do. Just one-on-one. "I don't think you're doing it maliciously. Perhaps it's your instinctual negativity getting in the way? I'm sure 'help' sounds like a painful concept to you, but we cannot help you or Cibus to the best of our abilities if we don't have the full picture." To really sell the act, he kept his eye contact moving between Tempest and Kate. "I can't force you to say anything, but it might help us bargain with Maple and others if we knew everything you seem to know about Eternatus."

Silence had fallen over the group again, so he decided to speak up. "I do not think it's worth it to add extra steps to all of this." He focused mainly on Kate. "Joule is still recovering and, outside of some reconnaissance thing in the Mist Continent, Maple has not left his side. We would be hard-pressed to approach him alone. And, even if we could, it would be a touch cruel to lay such a task at his feet while he's still recovering."

His head tendrils shrank and, in a whisper, he added. "I saw inside his soul... when our cores collided. The blacklight left him shaken in a way I can't describe. There wasn't one shade there or even a few. There were thousands."

Bahamut rubbed his beak with an upper wing. "We're focusing on Maple... but the reality is we need more help than her and her team. Even if the natives couldn't hit Joule directly, they assisted us in other ways. Without their help... the battle would've ended even more disastrously than it did."

His tail thumped impatiently against the ground. "If it were up to me, we'd revive you lot and burn the Tree and Eternatus to ashes." Bahamut's eyes dimmed. "But Cibus... is not like that. You all... have used more than the overwhelming force I'm used to. We need..." The necrozma's light shuddered. "We need cooperation.

"We tell people the truth, then scout the area. If it's safe to do so, we revive you all and heal Arceus. Then we work with the natives to figure out how to solve the Eternatus problem."

Bahamut slouched over. "Or you could completely ignore me. It's up to you."

... trying to pick up the slack for Owen was exhausting.

Astrid didn’t think she’d wander back here so soon. But here she was, back in this quiet place that Diyem had also recognized for its remoteness. It was a necessary precaution. All bets were off now.

But when she got to the clearing and Diyem started talking, and then Bahamut, then Diyem again, and then the suggestions started rolling in… Astrid’s heart sank.

“Wait, okay—” She shook her head, trying to keep her voice from revealing how betrayed she felt. “Our friends are… we need them, okay? They’re… we, let’s be serious here for a second. Those of us powered by the Blacklight are the only ones who can even hurt Giovanni to begin with.” Her gaze fell upon Diyem, and she thought of the Charizard back in the abandoned lab. “And you, I guess. You power our bodies after all.”

She looked around and swallowed. Committing to their friends and Diyem would leave Arceus and Cola unassisted. What sort of state would that leave Cibus in when they left?

…That didn’t matter much, did it? It was the world’s stability versus the world’s very existence at stake.

Astrid swallowed the lump in her throat. “…I think the choice is clear. We need to give ourselves the best chance of stopping Giovanni. Arceus, bless his soul, can’t do that. Cola can’t either.”

"Isn't Cola's whole schtick that he wants to discover his own identity?" Esper wondered. "If the Tree powers him into another Pop, he might lose the chance at his anime moment of self-discovery!"

"What the— when did you get here?" Bahamut growled. "And how do you know that?"

"I checked the script."

Bahamut raised his tail to swat Esper. The poipole held his arms up. "Okay, okay, I heard it from some other folks. Please don't squish me."
