Your footsteps echo eerily off the stone walls surrounding you. With each step, a few specks of dirt fall from the low ceiling. Torches in earthen sconces line the walls. Their flamelight flickers, causing your shadow to multiply and dance across the stonework, forming a ghastly troupe.

How did you get here, anyway? You could have sworn you were just minding your business—but that felt so long ago, as if someone removed part of your memory.

Cackles of raspy laughter can dimly be heard down the corridor. Your heart races—should you follow it? Or do you go back?

You keep going. If someone laughs, then you’re not alone in this strange place, and that’s a good thing—

Eventually the corridor opens to a wide rectangular room, all built of the same sandstone. A circular pit sits in the center of the room, a fire crackling within. In the light of the fire, you see the outline of a scrawny young man with a mane of white hair.

The young man turns—he can hardly be older than sixteen. But there’s something about his large, slanted eyes that portray a deep knowledge and wisdom beyond his years.

He smiles as you approach and a chill runs down your spine. There’s nothing friendly about that smile. In the light of the fire, you see something golden glint from the opening in his button-up shirt.

“I thought you might show up soon,” he growls with his soft English accent. “Wondering where you are, I expect? The world of memory can be a confusing place to wander about—particularly when the memories you explore are not your own.”

He glances over his shoulder and you see another doorway behind him. The moon hangs in a star-speckled sky like a floating crystal orb. A chill wind blows through the entryway, biting you to the bone and sending sparks flying from the fire.

“Yes, many people have disappeared lately,” the young man says nonchalantly. “And others go on after them in an attempt to rescue those who are lost.” He turns his dark brown eyes to you—eyes that seem to pierce your exterior and peer directly into your soul. You shudder.

He smiles again, showcasing his teeth—you notice his fangs look unusually large.

“What say you?” he asks. “Will you play as well?”

Welcome to the third Thousand Roads Mafia game! Whether you want to try your hand at something new or you're a well-seasoned player, all are invited to join in the fun!

How do we play?
This game will be roleplay-optional. What does that mean? It means you choose or create a character (your own or someone else's) and if you would enjoy pretending to be your character, reasoning and reacting to the situation in the same way that they would, then please feel free to post in-character as much as you'd like! However, to indicate that you're posting in-character, please surround any in-character text in double square brackets, [[like this]]. You are also welcome to include as much out-of-character straight strategizing and discussion in your posts as you'd like. If you'd prefer to play without RPing at all, that's totally fine! Your character choice will be used to flavor your role but have no other impact on the game.

Each character will be randomly assigned to one of two teams. Either you'll become part of the mafia, working to take control of the board by eliminating your opponents, or you'll become one of the innocent, working to discover and jail the members of the mafia before they can take over your home.

If you haven't played mafia before, it works like this:

1. Players are split into either mafia or innocent factions. The mafia know who belongs on their team, and they may freely communicate with each other outside of the game thread. The innocents do not know the alignments of any of the other players, and they can interact only by posting in the game thread at designated times.

2. The game proceeds in a series of "day" phases and "night" phases.

During the day, all players are "awake" and able to post in the game thread. This is the time when the innocents need to discuss who they think the mafia are, based on other players' posts or what they believe may have happened at night. Ultimately this leads to players voting on which person should be sent to jail. If the jailed player turns out to have been a member of the mafia, the innocents are one step closer to winning--but if they guess wrong, they'll only help the mafia in their quest to eliminate the innocents.

At night, the mafia choose one player to make disappear. They're free to talk with each other, plan, and strategize, but the innocent players cannot communicate. However, some innocent players may have a special ability that they can use during the night.

3. The game continues until either the mafia make up the majority of remaining players (meaning that they can control all day-votes) or the innocents successfully jail all of the mafia.

Please feel free to ask any questions you might have either here in the thread or by private message!

This game will NOT be a continuation of the previous Mafia games hosted here. So if you see a character that was in previous games, do not use knowledge from the previous games to make assumptions about their alignment or abilities. Alignments and roles will be randomly assigned. In a similar vein, I may not use all of the roles from previous games of Mafia, and I may make up a unique role or two!

In this game, each phase of "day" and "night" will last 48 hours.

Right now we're in the sign-up phase. If you'd like to play, post in this thread with the character you want to use. This can be one of your own fanfic characters or a character from someone else's story, but if you'd like to use another person's character please get their permission first. Please include some basic information about your character: name, species, appearance, basic personality traits, and anything else you'd like your fellow players to know.

Sign-ups are open until midnight UTC on Thursday, October 8. I'll get everything set up, and then the game will begin Friday, October 9th.

Gonna sign up for this! Here's the character information.

Name: Shimmer
Appearence: A kirlia.
Gender: Female
Personality: A bit of a loudmouth, she has a tendency to prattle on and jump on tangents. But don't let her vapidness deceive you, she's smarter than she looks!

Pokémon Trainer
I'm in!

Long black hair, tan skin, brown eyes. Iona wears a black sweater and pants, and a white shirt.
She's somewhat sarcastic and rude, and will usually work with whoever she thinks she'll benefit from working for the most. She doesn't really care about things such morality; instead, her priorities are survival, personal gain, and personal enjoyment (in that order).

Ace Trainer

  2. inkay
  3. woobat
  4. ralts
Name: Ashwood Kumar

Species: Human (and from the real world)

Gender: Nonbinary (they/them)

Age: 17

Appearance: Ashwood has light brown skin, dark brown eyes, and dark hair in an undercut style with a poofy top part that's partially dyed blond. They care for their hair meticulously. They are athletic and pretty muscular, and they generally wear loose, athletic clothing.

Personality: They are naturally boisterous, outgoing, and empathetic. This Ashwood won't remember anything from Blacklight and, as they are not going on a fun PMD adventure, may be significantly more freaked out by circumstances. They have a strong but vaguely defined sense of right and wrong. If you demonstrate yourself to be an asshole, they'll hold a grudge for a long time, but they default assume the best. They're not the best at thinking things through.

  1. zoroark
Name: Koraza, but prefers Kora

Species: Make a guess Zoroark

Age: 18

Appearance: I mean, just a Zoroark, but his hair is curved down and his eye pattern is curved like in my profile pic. Now I cannot change my pfp

Personality: A bit of a dunce, childish even. Friendly and naive, willing to give anyone a chance as long as he doesn't think they're bad. Even if he's been deceived, it's surprisingly easy to get back in his good graces, as long as you don't deceive him again. He isn't totally oblivious, even if he comes off that way, and while he ain't the sharpest light bulb in crayon drawer, he's not entirely idiotic. Most of the time. Other than bugs and deceit, he doesn't hate a lot.

Oh yes! Excite! I missed the last one, so I am totally down for this!

Name - Enigma

Species - Banette

Age - Erm... in human terms, probably 28

Appearance: Smokey-grey fur. Wears a heavy black scarf made of dusclops cloth. He also carries a hidden bell, the location of which is unknown. But it's made of honedge steel, and is silver with two blue tassels similar to honedge arms.

Personality - Very much a clown, although he can have some seriously dark moods. He can also be very manipulative. Being an assassin, he tends to strike fear into any who hear his bell. However, outside of his story and well away from his place of occupation, he's not averse to working with others to get to solve a tricky situation. Everyone wants to get home, right? Just don't get on his bad side.

Bug Catcher
This sound fun!
Human (she/her)
easy-going, nervous at first, willing to try new things and meet new people, tends to follow the crowd, can be too trusting and also suspicious of everyone. Not an amazing judge of character, but tries her best.

Friend of All Chu
Rhyme City
Y'al'ready know what trail I'm ridin'.

Name: Desper
Species: Raichu

Personality: He ain't no run a th'mill chu. Mousin' round don't get you nowhere 's an owl hoot, s'he's more of'n iron mon than 'lectric. Livin's nothin' but ridin' death like a buckin' outlaw. 'S much time 's he's spent hoppin' fences, he's got a fast eye fo' long sleeves, 'n' a faster trigger. Someone on his tail'll need'n angel's blessin' or a devil's curse to get 'm off guard.

Best o' luck t'all y'all sign'n' in. Hope t' see y'on th'other side.

Shiny Phantump

Born of Smol and Void
  1. sylveon
  2. absol-mega
  3. silvally-psychic
Name: Salac
Species: Braxien

De-facto leader and shrinekeeper of her town after her mother’s age-related death. When not performing her duties, she prefers to spend her time dabbling in the arcane and the scientific. (To her eyes, both are different sides of the same coin.) Close to achieving the level of psychic proficiency that will allow her to become a Delphox, but with the other matters in her life, it’s not her highest priority.

  1. espurr
  2. fennekin
Name: Detective Looker
Species: Human (He/Him)

Age: Classified

Star field agent for the mysterious International Police Division, Detective 100KR (Looker) spends most of his free time doing all the tourist stuff he sees but doesn't get to do when he's on a mission. Too bad for him there always seems to be Just One More Case waiting for him at the end of each one...

And that's it for sign-ups! I'll get the roles sent out today at some point. A few mechanical things to go through:

- Night 0 will begin tomorrow at Midnight UTC/GMT. No players will die on Night 0 in this game; this is to give everyone a chance to do some role playing, if they so desire. Please be aware that this is different from how the last game was played, where characters could have died Night 0.

- If you're unfamiliar with Mafia, check out this guide. Most of the roles will encompass or be similar to the following: strongman, vanilla town, watcher, vigilante, roleblocker, mason, bus driver, cop, lover, oracle, doctor, bulletproof, seraph knight, mafia goon, backup, tracker.

I'll link to the game thread once it's made. Good luck, everyone!
