“Oh.”

Dialga and Palkia always seemed too Primordial to be real. Or at least, real in a way humans should be concerned about. Progenitors of the current gods that either went back to sleep or have better things to do. It doesn’t bode well for something that ancient to be awake.

“I’ll keep that in mind. Also... what are your thoughts on Starr?”

Cynthian blinked. Why was she asking that out of nowhere? Cynthian didn't really see a problem with that, so he answered according.

"Well I haven't talked all that much to Starr honestly. Sure, she may seem rough and mean at first, but I came to learn that she means well. It's a bit weird honestly. She never did actually apologize properly for the things she said to me on our first day here, but I've long gotten over that now."

Lucky for Nip, the location in question wasn't hard to find. If he thought the other parts of Destiny Village felt unnatural, the perfect cube stuck out out like a sore paw. Two pokemon from the team — a deino that he barely knew and the roselia that he knew only better, were waiting outside. The two were engaged in some sort of conversation, though he wasn't sure what it was about, since he arrived at the tail end of it.

"Am I at the right place? I'm not late, am I?"

Holy shit an actual city. Paved roads, modern buildings, screens visible through windows. It practically would have been like being back home... y'know, if not for all the Pokemon walking down the roads. And on some level, it shouldn't have been that surprising--the team had been given friggin smartphones for crying out loud--but there was still something about the overall image that didn't compute.

Well, whatever. It was good to be in a more familiar environment.

Starr hadn't actually gotten the memo on where the team would be staying, and was about to ask the groupchat where to head when the last message from Maple gave her pause. Something at the research lab would be noteworthy for humans? Well, it wasn't like she had anywhere else to be right this moment. Sure, why not. She was kinda curious what a lab run by Pokemon would look like anyway--she'd seen plenty of em run by humans, after all.

So Starr pulled up the map on her badge and found her way to the odd, cube-shaped building with an automatic door on the front. Inside, she found Maple and a few other members of the God Squad, along with Nip, Cynthian, and... Cuicatl. Well... at least she looked somewhat less down since they'd parted ways back in Treasure Town. Maybe.

"Hey. So what'd you want us to look at?" Starr asked Maple.

Maple reemerged from the lab and scanned the relatively small crowd that had gathered with a hint of disappointment in her eyes. "I suppose the team is mostly busy touring Destiny Village or continuing visitations to Treasure Town, hm?" she said, frowning. "No matter. This will do. There are at least a few humans who might be able to help."

She turned and led them further down. "It's very rare for a human technology to appear in this world. It could potentially not be human, of course, but there are signs that suggest otherwise. But beyond that, I and the rest of my team are not extremely familiar with what humans are capable of. Rather than spend the time researching, I thought it would be wise to ask you directly."

They passed by a few doors and entered one of the experiment rooms, which had been converted more into something out of an archaeologist's analysis spread. Chunks and scraps of every single piece of the machine that had been recovered lay in neat and tidy rows on the ground, with Chip snapping pictures of every single one. He seemed nearly finished.

Most of it was scrapped, twisted, or smashed, but the material itself was sturdy. A little elbow grease, perhaps a few Recycles, and some puzzling together and it could be reconstructed--not that anybody wanted to try. It seemed that a few key components were missing, too, such as a source of Shadows. Perhaps it had been destroyed?

"If you could take a look at any of these pieces," Maple said, "and give us insight on what it appears to be..."

Nip noticed a subtle shift in the deino's body language, but before he had a chance to work out what it meant, Starr arrived. And then Maple emerged from inside, which meant that any questions would have to wait. Along with the others, he followed her deeper into the building.

"I'm afraid I may not be much help myself," Nip said. I had never even heard of humans before accepting Diyem's call. In fact, I'm not even sure that humans ever existed in my world. There's neither legend nor record of them, as fall as I know. But... I'll see what I can do to help."

As they reached their destination, Nip caught sight of that... that... unnatural thing. The pokemon that, by all that he knew, shouldn't be alive. His only guess was that it was some sort of ghost pokemon. After all, what other type of pokemon could live without its head attached to its body?

Starr glanced at the banged up hunks of junk that'd been salvaged. "This thing's human tech? How can you tell?" Sure, there was some kind of "shadow Pokemon" incident way off in the ass-end of nowhere a few years back (and apparently the same could be said in Cuicatl's world?). But Starr didn't know that much about it--her colleagues had briefly thought about replicating it, but they'd opted to go with less unstable alternatives. And besides--all tech looked like human tech to her. She'd only barely gotten used to the idea of Pokemon-made tech even being a thing.

"I mean, I'm not exactly an engineer, so I don't think I'm gonna recognize any, like, important components or whatever." She made a token gesture of pushing some of the scraps aside to look at the parts underneath. "Sure you don't want Dave to look at it? He's supposed to be a scientist." Granted he was like, a biologist or something, not an engineer. But whatever, good enough.

And then, to Starr's surprise, something caught her eye. Writing. And she could read it--not just through Diyem translation BS--it was actually the writing she was used to reading.

"Wait, wait. This writing here. Can you guys read this? It's Tohjoan; it's what I speak back home."

And then her eyes fell on something else that made her blood run cold.

Fucking hell what the fuck was that logo doing here fuck--

"Starr?" Maple asked.

Starr, let me see through your eyes for a moment, Diyem said, like he'd sensed that spike in emotions all the way from Veritas. Starr would feel a presence in the back of her mind, almost as if Diyem was mentally over her shoulder. ...R? It's a letter. That seems familiar... I'd heard about something like this before...

"It definitely looks like writing," Nip agreed. "It reminds me a bit of the written language my kin use for records territory markings. But... these are more complex shapes. I can't read it myself. You'll have to explain. Is it something... particularly bad?"

Diyem knew. The others didn't have to.

"Is it bad?" Starr asked with a scoff. "Yeah, I'll say. That logo--it's the symbol for the group of assholes responsible for pretty much every damn problem in the entire region back home. Not exactly the kind of thing anyone wants to see there--and especially not the kind of thing anyone wants to see in a different fucking dimension."

Starr gave Maple a sideways glance. "Yeah, uh... interdimensional travel isn't exactly a thing where I'm from. Before I got pulled here by Diyem, I'd have told anyone they were crazy for asking about it." She paused, then added, "And don't get me started on Darkwhite, I don't know what the hell her deal is. She sure as hell doesn't have anything in common with the Mew from my world, I can tell you that much."

"I haven't a clue what's going on either. But I guess since humans have come to this world before, it was only a matter of time before some... bad ones did," Cynthian said with a flower over his chin. He turned to Starr and asked.

"What kinds of things did this group do in your world, Starr? Nothing too... scary, I hope?"

"If Starr seems only slightly surprised that they would be behind something like this," Maple said, "I suspect they were quite scary." Maple hummed, thoughtful. "Do they go by a name? Is there anything else you know about them? How about others on your team? Perhaps you can communicate to them all in your badge."

Right. This was happening, apparently. No escaping it.

Starr rubbed her temple. "The R stands for Rocket. Pretty much everyone in my home region has heard of them--they're infamous." She paused, giving Cynthian a look. "It's... honestly probably easier to list things they haven't done. Never heard any rumors of them being involved with shadow Pokemon, though, so I guess that's one thing. Also--no clue if anyone else on the team would've heard of 'em." So far she'd pegged Cuicatl's world as being the closest to hers, but Cuicatl didn't seem to have shown much reaction. Then again, she was from some other country across the ocean, so who knows.

"I have no clue what 'Rocket' means, but I'll take your word for it." Nip turned his head to look back at the machine. "We still don't know how this got here, though. Stuff from your world. Or a world like yours, at least."Nip grumbled, shaking his head. "And with the uh... what was it called, a cosmog? How is he related to all this. It seems likely that they'd be related somehow, doesn't it? Since we, you know, found him in the machine."
