so here's the thing: I ran hot and cold on a lot of the mega evos introduced for Z-A and mega dimension, a number of whose designs I thought were far too visually busy or otherwise uninteresting; I also usually tend to think that big scary eyeball motifs are trite, so mega darkrai's design shouldn't have worked on me

except, all too predictably, I'm a huge fan of the direction that was taken with it -- I think it's largely that I find the notion of being turned into an omniscient eye creature extruding a mass of tendrils, in addition to the whole being cursed to bring nightmares to all in the vicinity, multiple notches more unsettling than anything else in the game. what recourse would one even have when being made to see the fields of misery brought about by their presence, with no option to look away? it's really funny that Z-A's main story ends once you've caught them and very little about this is raised other than corbeau and your companions going, like, "[PLAYER], you saved kalos, and you are the best at this. congratulations. also, darkrai isn't going to suffer any more because of you", and then you get to mega evolve them whenever you'd like. what the hell! that feels cruel. at the same time I think the design would also be much worse if it wasn't prima facie very silly. there are so many appendages sticking out of that thing, which floats about everywhere, is now extremely large, and has a normal head which just happens to disappear behind a gigantic pink eye a chunk of the time

would rank it among my three favourites of the new megas alongside golurk (also slightly unsettling to me, I like me a damaged ghost automoton) and starmie (c'mon. look at that thing)
