Pokémon [PMD] Darkrai's Gift

Hey guys, a lot of you won't know me, but this fic was originally meant to be a one shot that turned into a small fic. At the point of publishing it here to TR, I have completed the main story and currently working on an epilogue. This was mainly an exercise to see if I could complete something for once, and while it's not perfect, I'm happy with it. Reviews/criticism is welcome, but please be kind.

This takes place after the main story of the Explorers games, and is just an AU spin on the Darkrai plot that follows. No knowledge of the game is required, just know your Pokemon stuff.

As a warning, while the violence is not graphic, there are dark themes and character death involved. If you do not like character death, then please don't read and get upset.

Huge thanks to Namohysip for helping me get there. You're an inspiration to many of us.

I'm sorry, I don't really have a proper cover image for this.

Darkrai's Gift

Summary from FFN: Raiden and Seraphina had done it. They had saved the world from temporal collapse, but Raiden didn't get the happy ending he thought he'd get. Now lost and alone, he's made himself the perfect target for a certain dark spirit. Will the nightmares ever end? Explorers AU. Rated T for dark themes and character death.

Part One

They had really done it.

Raiden the shinx walked happily down the path that led back to the Rainbow Stoneship. There it would be, waiting for their long journey home. He and his best friend, Seraphina, had just saved the world from temporal collapse. The future would no longer be paralyzed beyond recognition. Grovyle and Celebi...they'd get to live in peace.

Most of all, Raiden would get to spend the rest of his life with Seraph. He was certain about his feelings now more than ever. He loved the vulpix. He didn't care that she used to be a human. That didn't matter to him at all. They'd go back home and celebrate with Wigglytuff's Guild...he'd confess and hopefully, she felt the same.

They could continue their adventures together! This time, without any pressing world-saving to do. They could relax and grow old together... perhaps evolve and even start a family. Raiden had it all planned out-assuming tonight would go as planned.

Now that Temporal Tower wasn't collapsing, Rai could finally appreciate where they were. The duo was high in the sky-falling off any floating islands they walked on would mean certain death. Aside from that, the area was certainly beautiful, even when looking back to see the looming tower they came from, he couldn't stop the excitement he was feeling from just being up here. He never thought he'd be high enough to see some clouds at the same height as himself. Raiden had heard rumours about dungeons ascending into the sky and beyond-those were the kinds of places he wanted to explore.

The places he wanted to discover with nobody but Seraphina by his side. No, wait, that was wrong. They had another teammate, Roger, who was a Barboach. They'd been in such a rush since coming back from the future that he'd almost forgotten about him. Raiden wondered how he was doing, and hopefully, Roger would forgive them for not taking him along.

The three of them could go on plenty of adventures together! Raiden couldn't wait to get start-

"Rai…?" a small voice called out.

He turned back to see his partner, who'd been lagging behind for some reason. "What's the matter, Seraph? Let's hurry home!"

"I... can't," she said. Her expression tightened as she avoided looking Raiden in the eye.

He felt a weight grip his heart. "Why... why not?" he asked, stepping closer to her. "What's wrong?"

Seraph sucked in a breath as she studied her paws and the ground below. "...Sorry, Rai, I've kept this to myself for a long time…"

A golden orb rose softly from her body and vanished into the air. Now that he was closer, Raiden could see that his partner's feet were beginning to go transparent. More orbs started to rise from the vulpix, as more of her became see-through.

No. Nononono. This wasn't how this was meant to go!

"S-Seraphina?" his voice cracked as he watched. He was confused. What was happening to her?

"It looks like... I have to say goodbye…"

Raiden's eyes widened. "Wh-What?!" he moved closer. He was sure he couldn't even see Seraph's feet anymore. "Goodbye?! What do you mean?"

Seraph looked up at him and Raiden could see the tears in her eyes. "Dusknoir told me. If we changed the future, then the Pokémon from the future would disappear…" then she smiled, "That means... I'm destined to disappear, too."

"That... that can't be!" he cried. "W-Why? Why?! I don't understand!"

His partner's eyes softened. He saw her front leg move but the end of it was already gone. Yet he felt a phantom caress on his cheek. Raiden sniffled.

"Thank you for everything. I'm going to be taken away now…" the orbs grew in number as less of Seraph was visible. Raiden had no choice but to step back a little. He had no idea what touching one would do. "But Rai... I'll never forget you."

"But wait for a second!" Raiden sobbed. "I only made it this far because you were with me, Sera! D-Don't you understand…? You made me strong… if you go, I-I don't know…"

The vulpix shook her head. Her eyes shimmered in the light. "No, Rai. You need to be strong on your own. You must live! You have to go home... tell everyone what happened here."

Seraph's expression turned serious. "So that... nothing like this ever happens again."

The light from the golden orbs became brighter as they increased in number. Raiden wanted this to be a dream. It had to be, right?

But it wasn't.

"D... Don't go, Sera, please!"

"I'm glad we got to train together at the guild... I'm glad we got to go on adventures together…"

"N-No, Sera-!"

"But most of all... I'm glad... I got to know you, Raiden."

"S-Sera, wait, please!"

Tears matted Raiden's face at this point. He couldn't see clearly past them. It was too much.

"I'm sorry," she told Raiden. "I'm so lucky that you were my friend…"

Their victory was long forgotten by now. All that mattered to Raiden was telling Seraphina exactly how he felt. "Y-You were more than just my friend! To me, Sera, y-you were... more important than anything!"

She let out a soft chuckle, staring up at the sky briefly before lowering her head once more. Seraph was now missing the entire lower half of her body. "I...feel the same way. I always wanted to tell you, but I never found the right time…"

Then there was a bright glow, blinding the shinx temporarily. When it faded, golden orbs were fading into the air.

Seraphina was gone.

"S-Sera? Sera?!" Raiden called out desperately.

But it was no use.

The shinx's legs gave way and he collapsed to the ground. Heavy sobs wracked his body.

"Nooooooooo!"

Every day was harder than the last.

Seraphina wanted him to keep living... but what was life without her?

Raiden's guildmates couldn't even cheer him up; suddenly saving the world just didn't mean that much to the shinx anymore.

All he could do these days was stand at the shores of Treasure Town's beach, seemingly waiting for something to wash up. He didn't eat or sleep unless his guildmates forced him to. The master's singing was often used to make Raiden unconscious for a few hours.

Despite her wish, he just couldn't carry on. It was too hard.

"I know it's hard, Raiden," Wigglytuff would say, "But you need to push on. It'll be the hardest thing you'll ever do but I know you can do it!"

Raiden didn't think he could.

Bidoof, Loudred, and Sunflora all tried to invite the shinx on their missions, but he always declined. "Exploring just isn't the same without her, sorry," he'd always tell them.

He tried asking if he could move out of the guild, sleep in his old home that was inside Sharpedo Bluff, but Wigglytuff and Chatot wouldn't let him, out of fear he'd do "something drastic," as they put it.

Days had bled into weeks, then bled into months. Being in the guild was agonizing. Everything reminded Raiden of his partner. Eating in the mess hall, sleeping in the room they had shared, looking at the message boards... even shopping in Treasure Town became a memory he'd treasured. Nothing felt as exciting with her gone.

Every sight brought back a memory of her. His heart ached day in and day out.

His guildmates stopped inviting him on their missions.

Then the shinx guessed that they couldn't handle him anymore because Chatot approached him one day and pulled him to the side.

"Raiden, please, it's been months. You can't mope around like this any longer... it's starting to affect the whole guild…" he said gently. "M-Maybe some time away ought to do you some good?"

Raiden's voice was quiet. He'd lost any kind of pep he had when Seraphina was around. "What am I supposed to do?"

"Hmm... perhaps a trip to the hot springs might be in order?" suggested Chatot. "You need to get out and relax for a bit... get your thoughts together. What do you think?"

"I guess…"

Chatot flapped his wings happily. "I'll take that! Do get yourself ready. I've already arranged it all with Torkoal. I imagine he's been wanting to talk to you."

"Right…"

Chatot nodded, then scratched at the ground with his talons, debating on whether he wanted to add anything more or not. He sighed and turned his back to the hero. "I'm sorry, dear boy. Please, hang in there…"

He quickly took off, leaving Raiden to himself.

The shinx didn't really have anything to pack, since the trip was short. On Chimecho's insistence, he took with him several apples just in case he got hungry.

"Now, I want to see those all eaten up before you get back!" she chided the shinx.

"No promises," he mumbled back.

By the time he'd left the guild, the sun was already high in the sky. Even its rise and fall taunted him.

Seraphina would never get to see it again.

Even though it was a warm day, by the time he'd reached the crossroads, he was cold. Unnaturally cold. The shadows cast by the signpost and trees seemed sharper as if they were coming alive, writhing and consuming the light. If Raiden stepped on a shadow, he imagined he might just fall through the ground.

The fur on the back of Raiden's neck stood up as he looked around. Of course, nobody else was here, was he seeing things? He must have finally lost it.

"Hello?" he called out, not expecting an answer.

"Hello," answered a smooth, friendly voice.

On instinct, Raiden was immediately preparing a discharge, electricity threatening to jump from his body at any moment. "Show yourself!" he shouted.

"My, my... is that how you greet everyone?" the shadows from the crossroad stretched out, first growing long legs and then a wispy body. A white cloud was the first part to emerge from the shadow, which turned out to be more wispy than cloud-like. One bright blue eye stood out completely, with the other being covered by the rest of the white plume. Around its neck was a spiky red growth, which seemed too natural to be a scarf. Everything else about this strange creature was dark and shadowy. Skinny arms with tatters coming off its shoulders, something resembling claws were at the end of the appendages. The wispy body rounded out in jagged spikes, like that of a torn cloak or scarf, and long, skinny legs helped the creature be much taller than Raiden's small frame.

The shinx gulped, still wary and ready to strike at a moment's notice. "Wh-Who are you?" he asked, "what do you want with me?"

"Want with you?" echoed the creature. The single visible eye was enough to know it was smirking at Raiden. "I want to talk to you, of course. As for the first question... I am known as Darkrai."

Darkrai... the name didn't sound familiar to him. But after Dusknoir's betrayal, he wasn't willing to trust anyone right off the bat. The shinx remained guarded. "I'm a little busy, so if you have something to say, make it quick."

"Oh, you're not busy," Darkrai dismissed the statement with a wave. "You saved the world, and yet all you want to do is talk to an old croon in a hot spring?"

Raiden tensed, already feeling the anger rise in him. "What's it to you?" he spat.

"A hero like you deserves a reward... I've been watching you, carrying all that grief and gloom with you. That's not a fate a hero should have to endure…"

It wasn't. But who could Raiden blame? His partner had come from the future with the aim of saving the present. Despite her initial amnesia, she came to know that she'd disappear. She'd been out to sacrifice herself from the beginning.

But that didn't stop it from hurting so much.

Darkrai had inched closer. "Your partner... you could see her again, you know."

His heart jumped at those words. Could... could he really…?

Raiden shook his head. He had to be cautious. It was too good to be true. "How do I know it's not a trick? You can't travel to a future that doesn't exist anymore."

"No, you can't," Darkrai lamented. "But I can help you see her. I know how much you want to…" then he leaned in towards Raiden's ear, its voice lowering to a whisper. "And I know how much she wants to see you, too."

His mind spun at the thought. Seraphina was… waiting for him? She wanted to see... him? There were so many things he wanted to say, so many things he wanted to do. He could finally get the life he wanted this way. He and Seraphina could be happy together.

A small part of his mind screamed out: "Don't listen! It's a trick!" but Raiden didn't want to pass up this opportunity. Life without Seraphina wasn't living. It was impossible. It wasn't fair. It wasn't the happy ending Raiden wanted at all. It was everything but.

"So…?" Darkrai had drifted away to give the shinx time to think. "Will you see your darling Seraphina again? Will you save her?"

That sweet, tempting voice of Darkrai's. Raiden wanted nothing more than to believe him.

"How do I do it? How do I see her?" he asked.

"Close your eyes, Raiden. I'll take care of the rest..."

The screech of wild wingull and the crashing of waves were what woke Raiden up. His eyes opened slowly as sunlight poked into his vision from the makeshift eye sockets of Sharpedo Bluff. A groan escaped the shinx as he sat up, stretching his legs out in the process.

Today was the day. He was going to finally join Wigglytuff's Gui-

Raiden paused as that thought sunk in. "I'm joining the Guild?" he asked himself aloud. A quick look around told him that none of his stashed away treasures he'd collected with Seraphina were in his home anymore. The chunk of crystal he'd taken from Waterfall Cave... a perfect apple seed from Apple Woods... other small things like that. Even if they weren't worth much in money, they were everything to Raiden's heart. Memories he'd shared with his partner. What did Darkrai do?

The shinx stepped over to his makeshift pouch he'd gotten from his parents. It was to hold some things until he got his official explorer's bag. If his treasures were gone and he had planned to join the guild, then… Yup, there it was.

At the bottom of the pouch sat a small, stone object. It was lined with intricate grooves and lines that made absolutely no sense, but at the same time, it all created a strange, peculiar pattern.

It was the relic fragment.

Raiden's eyes widened as he looked over everything once more. It was almost like he'd never joined the guild, with only his memories to tell him otherwise. Did that mean..."He... sent me back in time?"

Nothing answered him back, as expected. Raiden couldn't stop the grin from forming on his face. He was back! He could find Seraphina all over again! He stuck his head through the loop of the pouch, letting it hang from his neck. The shinx felt excited all over as he quickly climbed out of Sharpedo Bluff and darted to Treasure Town.

He weaved around townsfolk and jumped over smaller ones. Wurmple shrieked in terror as he was suddenly turned into a hurdle, but had no other reaction. Raiden took no notice of anything, except for his feet, to make sure he didn't trip, and his rapidly beating heart as he neared the beach.

He was so close…!

There were no bubbles out that day. Raiden assumed that he turned up too early to see them. But that didn't matter. He saw a patch of red on the far side of the beach, exactly the place he remembered. The shinx wasted no time in darting over, he could hardly believe his eyes.

Seraphina was unconscious in the sand. Unconscious but alive.

Raiden took a moment to just stare at his partner. He missed her. Everything hurt when she wasn't around. He placed a paw on her back, shaking her body gently. "Come on, Sera, please wake up..!" he said, desperation leaking into his voice.

Seraphina's vulpix body stirred, a light groan was enough to fill Raiden with joy. He waited for his soon-to-be-partner-once-more to get up, stepping back to give her some space. "A-Are you alright? What happened?" he asked.

"Uhm…" she paused, staring out at the water briefly. Raiden recognised the vacant look in her eyes from when they first met. "Sorry, I don't remember."

"You don't?" Raiden frowned a little. That meant she didn't know him at all. But he had Sera again. She was right here! That's all he wanted.

"Actually... I remember that my name is Seraphina," said the vulpix, "And... that I used to be a human." When Raiden didn't appear shocked, she only tilted her head in confusion. "Um... do you know what a human is?"

"I do," he said. "I believe you. I've heard more bizarre things before."

"Uh-huh... um... what do I do now…?"

Raiden could barely contain himself. This was it. The chance to do it all over again. They could save the world and he could figure out a way to stop her from leaving. He'd stop at nothing to keep Seraphina in his life. "Come with me!" he said with newfound determination. "We can sign up to the nearby guild, and we'll go on hundreds of adventures together! Something out there is bound to jog your memory!"

Confused eyes met Raiden's determined ones. Gentle waves brushed against the shore, yet made no sound. It was just the two of them.

Seraphina blinked. "Uh... sorry, who are you?"

Raiden snorted and chuckled. "Hehe! Sorry, I got ahead of myself there...my name's Raiden, nice to meet you!" He held out his paw towards her. She was the reason he even had that name. It felt right, introducing himself to her this way.

She smiled and returned the gesture, holding out her own paw and placing it against Raiden's own. They shook. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Raiden. And yes, I think I might just take you up on that offer...it's better than any plans I had, which was nothing."

He grinned. "Yes!" he cheered. "Don't worry, Sera, we'll get your memories back. You can count on it!"

Where did it all go wrong?

Raiden hadn't been able to find anything about time travel at all during their journey. The only ones capable of it were Dialga and Celebi. The passage of time just simply wasn't a thing that could be studied.

So once again he bore witness to the golden orbs of light that taunted him. Each one that floated from Seraphina's body was another part of her gone. He had thought things this time might be different, that her disappearing was just a stroke of bad luck. So why..?

"N-No..." Raiden stammered. "It... It can't be! I don't understand!" he wanted to be sick. He wanted to disappear too. He didn't want to be alone again.

"I'm never going to forget you," Seraphina said, holding back tears. "Thank you for everything, Rai…"

"No, wait!" he cried, running over to grab her as her remaining body flashed before him. He leaped, his desperate paws only phasing through the last of the orbs. In a sudden moment, his life had vanished once again.

He was alone once more.

His body fell forward. Raiden's front paws drifted to the sides of his head as he screamed. It echoed around in his mind as he released all of his raw emotion into the air. "No, no! No no no no NOOOOO!"

This wasn't it. He was promised he would see her again. Raiden could save Seraphina. He had to!

Then he stood up and glared at the sky. "You promised, Darkrai!" Raiden yelled. Without hesitation, he leaped off the path and began his dive into the clouds. His descent was rapid, he felt no wind.

"YOU PROMIIIIIIISED!"

And then his world rippled and shifted before him. Darkness swallowed him whole.

"Today, I would like to share some excellent news with you."

Raiden glared at Dusknoir like he always had this time, but his expression somehow went unnoticed all the while. Everyone in Treasure Town Square behaved as if they hadn't noticed his clear hatred for the ghost in front of them all. Not even Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf, the three lake guardians that protected just three of the time gears, the beings of Knowledge, Emotion, and Wisdom.

Not even Seraphina, who stood loyally beside him as they watched Dusknoir give his speech to the whole town. Everyone was too busy being enamored with the false explorer, the agent to Primal Dialga. Grovyle stood useless and bound between two of Dusknoir's lackeys, some sableye. Purple gremlin creatures with gems for eyes. The passage that would take them, Seraphina, and himself to the future awaited behind Dusknoir. It rippled and threatened to suck in anyone who would dare approach it. Raiden wanted to avoid going near it this time.

"Finally...Grovyle...has been captured!" Dusknoir declared dramatically. Raiden wanted to zap them all here and now. He couldn't believe how naive everyone was being. They all cheered for the capture of the one Pokémon trying to save the world. "This was all made possible by your selfless support and cooperation! I can't thank you enough!"

The cheering seemed so loud that Raiden couldn't pick out any specific voices, but when he looked around, he could see everyone but Seraphina celebrating with Dusknoir. Focusing on any one voice was impossible, even trying to pick out Ursaring and Teddiursa's roars from behind him wasn't happening.

Dusknoir continued with his speech. "As you can see," he said, gesturing to his prisoner. "Grovyle is a vicious and wicked Pokémon. His capture should result in lasting peace for your world."

"No, it won't!" Raiden shouted. Everything paused as Dusknoir's single eye became trained on him. It flashed blue so quickly that Raiden wasn't sure if he actually saw it or not.

Seraphina didn't move. It was like she was just as stuck as the rest of the Treasure Town residents.

"S-Sera…?" Raiden felt his voice crack as he waved a paw in front of the vulpix's face. Nothing responded. There was no breath, no movement, no recognition of Raiden whatsoever.

"Sera?!"

"Grovyle was a problem."

"H-Huh…?"

Raiden turned around to be face-to-face with Dusknoir. His yellow eye was now a bright, piercing blue.

Dusknoir's voice remained the same-deep, repulsive, and fake. But it sounded like it came from someone else. If anything, it was like Dusknoir had shown his true colours early.

"You heard me," he said. "Grovyle was a tiny thorn in my side. He tried to play hero...I'm glad he was stopped."

Raiden gritted his teeth as he stared up at the malicious ghost. "He was trying to save the world, and the future!" he retorted. "That's more than I can say about you!"

"Temper, temper," Dusknoir chided, turning away from the shinx. "Besides, he was only a tiny thorn...merely a prickle."

Floating back to his original position, Dusknoir faced Raiden and the frozen crowd once again. Just how was he doing that…? "What are you... what do you mean?" he asked the ghost.

"There are bigger obstacles in my way... and you were one of them."

"M-Me? I...I don't understand-" Raiden quickly shook his head. "What game are you playing at, Dusknoir?! What did you do to everyone!?" his shout didn't even leave an echo. Then Raiden paused. He took a moment to consider his surroundings. Everything was quiet. There was far less sound than there should have been. "W-Wait, where's the wind? I... I can't even feel the sun!" he panicked, looking around. "What's happening?!"

Everything seemed brighter for just a moment. A pink glow started to invade his vision. This felt soft, comforting...and real.

"Come on, Raiden! Please wake up!" pleaded a voice.

"Wh-What…? Who are you?!" Raiden cried. Nothing was making sense anymore. The entire world around him flickered briefly.

Dusknoir's abnormal blue eye glowed brighter. The pink glow suddenly vanished, replaced by only darkness. "You wished to see Seraphina all over again, did you not? This is what you wanted."

Fogginess took over Raiden's mind and his surroundings warped once again.

Raiden and Seraphina were walking happily, side by side in Apple Woods. It was a simple dungeon filled with grass and bug-type Pokémon, with trees clumped so close together they almost formed walls side-by-side, and fresh, soft dirt under their paws with each step. Even if the job wasn't great-fetching Guildmaster Wigglytuff some perfect apples-he was still with his partner, Sera, and that's all he cared about. It was another adventure they could go on.

Their peaceful moment was disrupted by a butterfree, a small, winged, insectoid Pokémon that was no match for either of them. His body crackled with electricity as he slammed into the butterfree with a jump. Once he landed, Seraphina followed up with a small burst of flames that she spat at their opponent. It had no chance as the poor butterfree flew off in retreat.

Raiden looked back and grinned at his partner, and she grinned back. At first, he'd been wary about adventuring with her. Seraphina had claimed she was a human and had no memories of anything when he had first met her at Treasure Town's beach, but she had learned quickly how to handle herself. He felt invincible when he was with her, it was amazing how much courage and confidence he had when Seraphina was around.

"C'mon!" Raiden said with a cheer, "We should be nearing the center of Apple Woods, that's where Chatot said all the perfect apples were!"

The vulpix nodded in agreement. "Yeah! We'll have this job done in no time, though if we're going anywhere else I'm getting my paws and legs cleaned first. As nice as this dirt feels...it's giving me a huge urge to get clean."

He snickered in response, it was one bit about Sera he enjoyed. She had a habit of being clean, while he didn't care if his fur was a little messy. Raiden was often chided for it.

"Jeeze, Rai," Seraphina huffed. "The least you could do was look nice for our clients!"

Raiden glanced back at hearing his nickname, only to find that they were now back in their room at the guild, they were both up and ready for the day ahead of them. Sera had a cute pout on her face, her tails curled up so the tips were touching the middle of her back. He knew that as a 'tell' for when she was mildly annoyed.

"Aw, Sera!" he heard himself whine in response. "But they don't care how I look, what matters is that we get the job done!"

She rolled her eyes in response. "You could at least look neat for the guild, you know, image and stuff."

"Naaah, I'm pretty sure they don't care either," just talking with his partner like this made him feel all warm and fuzzy inside. It reminded him of the good memories, the times they saved the day, completed an errand, or discovered something new about the world.

He was going to save his darling Seraphina.

Then in a flash, his surroundings changed again. Once more, they were walking away from Temporal Tower, approaching the rainbow stoneship. Fresh off their victory against Dialga. The two of them had saved the world. They were invincible! They faced all odds and won!

Raiden couldn't wait to confess his feelings to Seraphina once they got back. Hopefully, she'd felt the same way and they could start a new life together.

Raiden stopped. His gut dropped. Once he realised what was about to happen he refused to turn around. He didn't want to see what was about to happen again.

"Rai…?" a small voice called out.

No. No no no, not again!

He forced his eyes shut. He couldn't will himself to do it again. "No! Not again!"

Raiden had thought he closed his eyes, but his vision blinked and the vulpix he loved with all his heart was disappearing once again. Those taunting gold orbs…

Sera's taunting, sad eyes. They burned into his mind.

"...I'll never forget you," Seraphina told him.

"N-No, Sera, please!" Raiden begged. "Stop disappearing!"

But no answer came. With a flash, Raiden was back on the beach. The waves were loud, the sand was extremely gritty under his paws. But what had his attention the most was Seraphina.

"Who are you?" she asked.

Instead of answering, his breath hitched and Raiden took off into the water, which wasn't even making him wet. He didn't even hear Seraphina react at all. A large wave washed over him and before he could hold his breath, his world flipped and he was back at Temporal Tower.

"...I'll never forget you."

"Wh-Why is this happening?!" Raiden screamed. He turned and ran from his growing nightmare. The path seemed to go on forever. He ran and ran and ran, faster he went, not looking back.

He couldn't see it anymore.

The shimmering form of Darkrai appeared beside him. Without thinking, Raiden pounced at the one who as far as he knew, was behind all this.

"Stop messing with me!" he shrieked.

Suddenly he crashed into the sand at the beach, his surroundings having warped again. He was sure he would have tasted the grains against his tongue.

If it was real.

Darkrai was floating behind a frozen Seraphina, who was staring at nothing. The shinx glared and watched as Darkrai stretched out his phantasmal legs. "What's wrong, Raiden?" he asked, his single blue eye trained on Raiden.

"This was your plan all along, wasn't it?!" Raiden demanded. "You were just out to mess with me!"

"Who are you?" asked the vulpix, still facing nothing.

Darkrai appeared to shrug. "I was wondering if you'd ever notice...though there was a time you nearly got pulled out... I made quick work of that."

"I…" Raiden paused, trying to think back. "Someone was...trying to rescue me?"

Darkrai's laugh echoed through the beach and in Raiden's mind. "Of course. But you see, your bad dreams specifically have given me so much power...I've become unstoppable. Not even that pesky Cresselia can counter me anymore. You hero types are so gullible, your love turned into the strongest kind of despair under the right circumstances, so thank you for helping."

He had so many questions. Who was Cresselia? Bad dreams? What power was Darkrai talking about?

Darkrai continued. "You're more gullible than I thought. Your love for your dead friend made you desperate...you reeked of opportunity. You see...the whole world did."

Raiden choked. "Wh-What?"

"Even in your dreams, this world is too bright for my liking…" Darkrai scoffed, and a wave of his wispy hand made the whole image vanish. It was just the two of them in overwhelming darkness. It made Darkrai almost blend in. "I wish to cover it in darkness and become its king. So I meddled with Temporal Tower and hoped to cause the Planet's Paralysis. But then those two-" he conjured up a bipedal creature that seemed to stand protectively in front of Grovyle. It had red, frizzy hair and brown eyes, like the ones Raiden loved to stare into. "They got in the way and planned to travel through time. So I intervened during their trip, but then Seraphina just had to protect Grovyle, and in doing so she became a Pokémon with amnesia." What Raiden then presumed was Seraphina's human form morphed into a vulpix. "I thought that was it...but they became way too resourceful."

If Raiden had been awake, he imagined his head would be spinning by now. Darkrai had been behind everything this whole time? "I...I don't believe you!" he cried. "You're lying!"

Darkrai crushed the two figures he'd made, turning them into nothing. "I know I lied to you before, but this time it's the truth. Why, your emotions inside this little nightmare of yours gave me enough power to take over for real!" his eye narrowed. "Because of you, everything has been plunged into darkness!"

His eyes widened with fear. No...please be okay, everyone! I'll wake up and help you!

"Now listen closely, because I'm only going to say this once…" Darkrai said. "If you join me, we can rule the darkness together. You'll never have any more nightmares...and I'll get Seraphina back to you for real. It'll be the three of us…"

Raiden faltered. He was promising he'd get to see Sera again. That's how he'd gotten into this mess in the first place, he'd been fooled into thinking he could see her once more.

"You have to live!"

The shinx blinked. "Sera…?"

"Tell everyone what happened here...so that...nothing like this ever happens again."

It was happening again. Darkrai had presumably taken over. Now Raiden was trapped and all alone. Was this how it was going to end for him? Was he just going to be stuck in this eternal nightmare?

"Well?" Darkrai asked. "Will you join us?"

"I'm glad we got to train together at the guild...I'm glad we got to go on adventures together…"

"...I'll never forget you, Rai"

Raiden bared his fangs and glared at the being of darkness. "No!" he shouted. "I'll never join you! I'm going to wake up and take you down! Seraphina would never have wanted this world to become darkness, not after she sacrificed her life to save it!"

Darkrai regarded him for a moment. His eye closed, then opened again. "Fine," he said. "I've had a change of heart. Wake up and take me on. We'll see if your courage remains once you see what's become of the world you hold so dear…"

...

...

"...Gee, he's never going to wake up is he?"

"Golly...Cresselia said he will, you just have to have hope!"

Raiden heard voices, but everything was still dark. It took him too long to realise his eyes felt glued shut, so he tried and struggled to force them open. A groan escaped his parched throat as many gasps and hushed voices filled his ears.

"H-Hey, hey! He's waking up!" said a voice.

"About time, chaw-haw-haw," said another.

"Hold up, give him some space!" squawked a third.

Once he finally managed to get his eyes open, Sunflora and Bidoof were the first ones he saw. But he wasn't at the crossroads anymore.

"O-Oh, golly, Raiden!" Sunflora squealed with relief, handing him a small oran berry. "It's so good to see you awake, but please, don't rush!"

He was so busy gulping it down that he struggled to get words out. "Wha…?"

Bidoof looked like he was about to cry. "I-I saw you passed out at the crossroads a-and I carried you back, yup-yup!" he explained. "You were asleep for a month!"

The shinx forced himself to get up. "A-A month..?" he gasped.

His companions nodded their heads solemnly. Corphish stepped forward next, with Skuntank next to him. Raiden never considered they'd be standing in the same room like this. A quick scan of the room he was in told him most of his guildmates and others were gathered in his own room at the guild. The purple Kecleon brother entered, along with Chansey, who seemed quite relieved to see the shinx.

"What…?"

Chatot was the next to speak up. "Raiden... you need some rest. We can talk about this later…"

Raiden shook his head, then took time with his words. "N-No. I've been asleep for a month thanks to Darkrai... what's going on?"

Skuntank glanced out the window, prompting Raiden to do the same. The room was silent enough for him to hear enraged roars coming from the ocean. Then the window lit up and the whole guild trembled, presumably from the aftershock of a powerful attack. "Chaw-haw... Kyogre and Groudon are fighting violently... and that's not even the worst of it."

Sunflora tapped her leaves together as she spoke up. "Darkrai showed up a few days into your sleep... I don't know how... but he has many of the legends under his control!" she cried. "He makes them fight or destroy things for fun! The ones he doesn't have must be in hiding... but nobody has been brave enough to stop him! Not after what happened to Treasure Town…"

A powerful silence hung over the room. Everyone lowered their heads, like they knew something Raiden didn't.

"...What happened to Treasure Town? And wait, where's Loudred?"

Chatot sighed. "I'm sorry, Raiden. We tried to stand up to Darkrai in your place, but…"

Bidoof gulped. "Darkrai targeted Treasure Town in retaliation...We tried to evacuate everyone we could while Groudon was preparing to burn it to the ground. Loudred rushed back to save more Pokémon, but it was too late.

The purple Kecleon brother sniffed. "My brother...Loudred...and others...not everyone made it."

Raiden's breath hitched. No... no... it can't be…!

The shinx bit into his front right leg, much to everyone's surprise. His teeth dug deep, drawing blood. It tasted bitter on his tongue. It made him dizzy.

"R-Raiden!" Sunflora whimpered.

There were no lies this time. It was all real. Darkrai had taken over.

Seraphina had sacrificed herself to save this world-had asked him to tell everyone their story. But no, he'd despaired so much that just about everything he'd treasured was gone.

And it was all his fault.

If Raiden couldn't believe there was no more Treasure Town before, he surely did now.

Standing on the hill that housed Wigglytuff's Guild, the shinx could no longer see the bright buildings that had welcomed him every day. What used to be a big marketplace was now a giant crater in the ground, leaving no trace of what had been there before. Not even the trees and flowers had been spared. It was all ash. Everyone who had escaped the area on time was now hiding out within the guild. For now, they were as safe as they could be, housed in the lower levels of the base. The primal roars of Kyogre and Groudon could be heard, each of their blows lighting up the area each time they connected.

"Depressing, innit?" asked Skuntank as he approached.

Raiden turned back and sighed. "I'd been hoping it was all a bad nightmare…"

"Yeah? Well, lucky for you that you went and slept through it all," he scoffed in reply. "We had to live through it."

The shinx winced at his words. "I... I had no idea any of this would happen. I-" he stopped. What could he say? Would his apologies even ever be enough? Many Pokémon had lost their homes or died because of his actions. He let himself be fooled and everyone suffered because of him.

All of this happened because he was selfish. He had wanted to see Seraphina again and it turned him into a fool.

Seraphina…

Raiden fell and shoved his face into his paws. His heart ached and refused to stop. He lost Sera...then he was tricked into a nightmare...and during that, his friends tried to fight for him and they lost their homes because of it.

"Why…?" he sobbed. "Why does it have to be this way…?"

Skuntank grunted, turning back to the guild. "Is how it is, I suppose. I imagine all the folks inside will still want to fight, though. Come on, that Cresselia chick should be back by now…"

Raiden slowly raised his head, having been about to ask who Cresselia was, but the poison and dark type was already walking back into the guild. The shinx slowly rose back to his feet, staring out at the crater in the distance once more.

"I'm...so sorry…" he said to the air, glad it didn't respond this time around. He followed Skuntank back inside.

The lower levels of the guild consisted of residents he used to pass by in Treasure Town all the time, mixed with guild members helping around the place and beyond. Chimecho was busy tending to children and injured Pokémon with assistance from Croagunk and his weird concoctions. They also worked together to make sure everyone stayed fed. Diglett and his father, Dugtrio, were out, burrowing towards other areas on the continent to spread and gather information with the help of Skuntank's cronies, Zubat and Koffing. The father-son duo had helped with evacuating by creating some tunnels for faster escapes, allowing for more supplies to be saved. Wigglytuff was presumably "resting" in his room, according to Chatot, because he tried to protect Treasure Town against Groudon and was injured in the process.

Sunflora, Bidoof, Corphish, and Chatot were gathered and chatting about something as Raiden and Skuntank approached them. This scene alone would have looked mostly normal if it wasn't for the strange, glowing, and pink and blue being chatting with them. Its curved, blue body had a yellow underside, which reached up to the face and ended in a pointed snout. This made the pink eyes and the brighter pink tuft on its head stand out more. The sides of the head were adorned with yellow, crescent-shaped ornaments that reminded Raiden of the moon. Three pink rings were also attached to the body, one on each side that functioned like wings and a larger one that came off the back of the body. Just looking at this being made Raiden feel a little lighter as if hope had arrived in the wake of this nightmare. When they spotted him, they gave him what looked to be a smile, and he merely nodded back.

"Sh-She's so pretty, Chaw-haw," Skuntank said to himself. The shinx couldn't help but roll his eyes.

Sunflora was the second to notice Raiden's arrival and she meekly waved, causing Bidoof, Corphish, and Chatot to look as well. "Raiden!" she said, her voice struggling to remain chipper. "How are you?"

Raiden grimaced, "I've been better."

Chatot nodded and Bidoof frowned. "Golly...I know it's hard, but we just have to keep going, yup, yup!" said the latter.

Chatot nodded again as if to agree, but he opened one of his wings and gestured to the being floating by them. "Raiden, this is Cresselia," he explained. "The Guildmaster sent for her when we realised you weren't waking up. She did what she could to wake you up from your…" he hesitated, giving Raiden a look that he'd begun to recognise as pity. "...Nightmares."

He felt several sets of eyes watching him as Raiden stared at the floor. Before all this, he had ignored all the pity and sympathy he was getting. But now it just felt ridiculous. How could they still feel sorry for him? It didn't make sense to him at all. Chatot cleared his throat and continued, but Raiden heard none of it.

All he could think about was the endless cycle he'd been forced through.

"I'll never forget you."

"Who are you?"

A bitter laugh escaped his mouth, causing Chatot to stop again before he'd even noticed his laughter was audible. "E-Everything alright?" Chatot asked cautiously.

"It wasn't even her talking...but it's the truth, isn't it?" Raiden said, "She can claim she won't forget me, but in the end...you have no memories when you're gone, right? There's nothing left."

Sunflora squeaked and covered her face with her leaf-appendages. Bidoof started to tremble and Chatot didn't even know what to say.

"I saw the nightmares Darkrai had inflicted upon you," said a gentle, feminine voice. Raiden looked up to see that Cresselia had floated closer to him, and he noticed that one of her side ring-wings was dim and hung low. "I'm so sorry he did that to you, I should have known what he was up to sooner…this whole thing is my fault."

The idea of someone else blaming themselves for all this filled Raiden with anger. How did she not see that it was his fault and not hers? "No!" he cried, causing those nearby aside from Cresselia to jump. "You're not at fault! This is all happening because of me!"

"Rai…" Sunflora whimpered.

"But Rai...I'll never forget you."

And immediately Raiden's head snapped in her direction. "DON'T CALL ME THAT!" he bellowed. Every set of eyes was on him at this point. He could feel his whole body heaving as he felt his legs start to move towards the upper levels and soon the exit to the guild.

"R-Raiden!" he heard Sunflora call out to him. "Gosh, I-I'm so sorry!"

But he couldn't answer back. He didn't trust himself to. The shinx forced himself to leave, taking the ashen and not-totally-fresh air back into his lungs. Raiden didn't even care about the rain that started to pelt against his body, he just needed to get out.

Raiden only stopped briefly before breaking into a full run. He charged down the beaten path, jumping over some fallen trees and not caring about any mud that splashed onto his fur. He just needed space. He needed to be alone, to go somewhere and scream.

Flashes of memories kept playing in his mind. He couldn't forget Seraphina's smile, the way it had made his heart flutter and kept his wits in place. He even missed her stern looks, when she'd scold him for keeping his fur messy, when she'd pick on him for his table manners, and even when he was being reckless on missions. Then there were their adventures...making their way through the guild ranks, and Arceus, how delighted she was whenever they reached a new rank. They were the first to discover the secrets of Fogbound Lake and remember it, then the Desert Lake, and finally the Crystal Lake. They'd stopped Skuntank and his cronies' numerous times from causing trouble, saved the Azurill and Marill brothers, saved the world, even…How could he ever forget any of these? Every memory was a precious one to Raiden. Every time he closed his eyes, he'd see her. He'd see his partner and it would fill him with warmth and joy.

Each time his eyes opened again, it brought him only that much more pain, because he had to remember that she was gone.

Then something struck one of his paws-a branch he missed the jump of or merely a rock-and he tumbled, sending his whole world into a spin. When he came to a stop, it took him a moment to realise he could taste the sand this time. Grainy, bitter, and wet. Raiden did his best to spit and cough it out. He was at the beach-for real this time, except there was nothing peaceful about it now. The sand was dark and wet, with the tide being higher than normal. A few trees lining the beach had fallen, bothering the otherwise soft sand. The harsh rain made it hard to see, but a strike of lightning showed that even Sharpedo Bluff had been affected by all this, with the outline of its jaw missing from the rest of the rocky outcrop.

Raiden stared in disbelief at the sight of it. Even his old home was gone.

"This can't be!" he screamed over the wind and rain.

A roar drowned out his cry, and he finally spotted the ones responsible. Like two titans locked in an endless battle, Kyogre and Groudon were still very much at it. But even in the distance, Raiden could tell that something was wrong. Kyogre seemed to be massive, and instead of glowing red and blue, it was glowing red and yellow. It looked slightly different from what he'd seen in picture books, with the tail being larger and splitting into more parts than he remembered, and a strange, circular marking on its head.

Groudon towered over its counterpart, partly because it stood tall on top of a pillar of molten rock as it fired its attacks. But even then, it was like the primordial being of earth had nearly doubled in size. The lines cutting across the being were wider and fiercely glowing yellow, the spikes around its neck and underbelly were larger. Strange, curved markings were on Groudon's arms, and like Kyogre, the tail had stretched out, the spikes at the end now having more space between each other.

The shinx gawked at what he could see. The god of the seas roared, flew out of the ocean, and then charged a beam in its mouth-flying straight at its opponent. Groudon roared back and countered with a fiery, hot beam of its own. The two clashed, and the resulting shockwave tossed water everywhere, crashing into nearby cliffs and causing them to crumble under the pressure. The aftershock pushed Raiden back into the sand and sent him rolling. He yelled in surprise and forced himself to his feet in time to make out Kyogre trying to tackle Groudon into the ocean, but the land beast had caught it, and thus began yet another power struggle.

If they kept going like this, Raiden had no idea how bad the damage would get. He stepped into the heavy waves that threatened to drag him into the battle and the unknown. Yes, it was reckless, but he knew he had to try something. The shinx inhaled, dug his paws into the sand, and screamed with all his might:

"KYOGRE, GROUDON, STOP IT! CAN'T YOU SEE WHAT YOU'RE BOTH DOING?!"

He was answered with a giant wave that quickly washed over him. Before he could escape, he was dragged with it into the water. His world was spinning once again as he was pulled out and under the waves. There wasn't a Pokémon around that would help him-not that he could see any, as it was way too dark thanks to the weather and the battling giants. Bubbles escaped his mouth as he desperately tried to kick himself back up to the surface. Kick with his back legs, pull up with his front. Once his head broke free, Raiden coughed and took in big gulps of air as he kept himself afloat. A quick look around told him he'd already been pulled away from shore. At this rate, he'd be lost to the world.

"D-Damnit!" he gasped, begging his furious swim back to the beach. His small legs struggled to close any distance between him and the shore. A roar filled his ears, and he quickly took a deep breath as another wave crashed into him, sending spiraling further down into the darkness. Kick, pull, kick, pull. He had to make it back. For everyone. For Seraphina.

"You need to be strong on your own. You have to live!"

Kick, pull, kick, pull. Why was it that when he was at his closest to death, he was more determined to live? He could boil it down to instinct, but then why did Sera's last words come to him? He didn't get it. Kick, pull, kick, pull.

His head broke the surface again, and this time, a pink light was at the beach, which was now further away from him.

"Raiden?!" a desperate voice echoed in his mind. "Where are you?!"

He tried to call out in response, but all he got was a mouthful of water instead. Did Cresselia come to find him? He tried to wave his front paws in the air, forgetting he would be too dark and small to see. Another wave, bigger this time, crashed on top of him as if it was deliberate, and it pushed him down.

"Please! Let me know if you're out here!" her voice was becoming frantic now.

If she couldn't see or detect him, Raiden would have to make himself known. It was the only way he was going to stay alive.

He had to live.

Kick, pull, kick, pull. Raiden was trying harder now to reach the surface. He had one shot to make himself known. He had to live!

Desperation flooded through his body. His eyes stung from all the water and his ears felt funny. The fight to surface this time seemed to be harder than the last two. Every part of his body screamed in retaliation as it seemed like he was going against the ocean itself, something was trying to make sure he didn't survive. Then suddenly as the pressure came, it vanished. Raiden was propelled upwards as if he'd been hit by a hydro pump, so he used this to his advantage and quickly started charging electricity through his body. This was it. All or nothing.

The second Raiden felt the cold, stinging air touch his body, he gasped and released all the electricity he had stored in one, big discharge. It lit up the area around him, but he had no time to look as he fell back into the water, now too exhausted to keep swimming. His battle with the waves had taken more out of him than he thought…

As he sunk into the water once again his vision began to fade. That was it. All he could hope for now was that Cresselia could find him. The last thing he saw was a large, circular shadow pass over him.

"I'm coming!"

Warmth was the first thing Raiden felt when he came to, the sounds of a crackling fire accompanying it. The shinx groaned, forcing his eyes open once again. He had to stop waking up like this. He was back on the beach, now a considerable distance from the water. His fur felt damp but showed signs of getting dry. Raiden lifted his head to see Skuntank gently breathing some flames onto the fire to keep it steady and hot, while Cresselia was resting beside him. Some kind of rough shelter had been made, which was protecting them from the onslaught of rain.

Skuntank stared at the shinx with a look of caution on his face. "You're not gonna go back out there are you?"

"N-No…" Raiden replied weakly.

The poison and dark type grunted, sitting down near the resting duo. "Good...because I wasn't sure if I'd be able to stop you."

"What makes you say that?"

"You beat Dialga and saved the world, did you forget or something? There's no way I could beat you in a fight," then Skuntank smirked. "Not fairly, at least."

Raiden fell silent. It was strange to think that he had beaten Dialga. That felt like some other timeline or another life. He sighed. "I wasn't alone when I beat him," he said.

"And you never have been, Raiden," said a new voice. A dark blue and yellow fish Pokémon swam over in the air, and thanks to the light of the fire, the details could be made out a little clearer. He had a deep, blue body, with the pectoral and belly fins matching the colour. His large mouth was clear with the big, light blue lips he had, that currently made a big frown on his face that looked almost ridiculous on the fish. The rest of his body was two light blue dorsal fins, one on his back and the other at the end of his body, which somewhat resembled a tail, and a yellow underbelly. What completed the Pokémon was the long, yellow barbels that stemmed from his cheeks and the tell-tale yellow 'W' on his forehead. Raiden could easily identify this as a whiscash, but this one was larger than most that he'd seen. He and Sera could have easily ridden on his back, go on adventures together. It reminded him a lot of-

Raiden gasped, staring at the new arrival. He couldn't believe it. "R-Roger?" he asked tentatively. "Is...is that you? Last time I saw you, you were a Barb-"

"Barboach?" Roger smiled a little before frowning again. It nearly looked like his mouth was going to melt away. "Ah, yes, I can explain that later. But right now, are you okay? You scared me like that being in such dangerous waters! The ocean is no dungeon, you know."

The shinx sighed. "Yeah, I'm fine. I was trying to shout at Kyogre and Groudon and I uh...guess I got washed away?"

Skuntank lifted a paw to his face and groaned into it. "Geeze, Shinx, you're a crazy 'mon."

"I'm no expert on legendary Pokémon, but I don't think shouting at them is going to help anything," Roger said nervously, the tips of his barbels touched together in response. "I don't think they're in a state to just stop because someone asked them nicely."

"How do you know this fish, Shinx?" Skuntank asked, gesturing towards Roger with his head.

Raiden paused for a moment. "Oh, yeah! Sera and I recruited him on one of our adventures, but when it came to some of the world-saving stuff, there wasn't much time to bring him along. Skuntank, this is Roger. He...used to be a Barboach. When did you evolve?"

"Umm, a while back actually!" Roger said, now with a proud, toothy grin on his face. "The Guildmaster sent me on a secret training adventure with his friend Lapras, and he helped me become super big and strong for you!"

Raiden nodded, feeling quite impressed with the results. "Wow," he said in awe, "Congratulations! You must be super strong!"

Roger nodded quickly, his whole body flowing with the movement. "I am! Thanks to Lapras and Mr. Wigglytuff, I can protect you even better now!"

A scoff came from Skuntank, and he narrowed his eyes at the shinx. "If it weren't for him and Cresselia, you'd be a goner in the ocean by now."

It made him pause. He nearly died. The thought of it made Raiden's throat feel dry and his stomach clench. "I nearly…" he muttered in slow realisation.

"Yes, you did!" the poison-dark type growled with irritation before suddenly raising his voice. "Is that what you were trying to do?! Leave us will all this mess you helped cause?"

Raiden flinched as he stared down at the sand. He had no response to give, why should he? Skuntank was right after all. What right did he have, to skulk around and nearly drown while everyone was suffering? It wasn't right to just leave his messes to everyone else. He might have saved the world, but he put it in an arguably worse situation than before.

Roger glared at Skuntank, floating just a bit closer to him. "How dare you talk to him like that! He saved the whole world, and this is how you treat him?"

"Hmph."

The whiscash took this chance to continue, "You didn't exactly make Rai's guild life easy, either! With all your stupid tricks and shenanigans. Why I should blast you with my hydro pump for all you did!"

Skuntank stood up and glowered at Roger. "I dare you to try then, Whiscash. I ain't afraid of you!"

Raiden didn't even bother trying to stop them. He was too deep into his thoughts to care. He thought about what had been going on, everything he'd done since that day he lost Seraphina. He remembered all the looks his guildmates would give him when they didn't think he was paying attention. The pity, the sadness, the worry. Why did they still care, even now? He still had seen the same looks, the same pity one month later. The world was ending again, and they still had time to care for him? That felt ridiculous.

It was all ridiculous. The world needed him again, so why couldn't he-?

Right. His partner was gone, and so was his strength.

His rock.

His courage.

"Raiden," Cresselia's voice snapped him out of his thoughts. He looked up to see that Roger and Skuntank had both calmed back down, but neither was talking. Cresselia must have stopped him while he was lost in his mind. His gaze went back over to the lunar Pokémon and saw her sorrow-filled expression. "Are you alright? I'm so sorry that happened to you, I came as fast as I knew you needed help."

The shinx stood there for a moment before he sighed. "Please, stop apologising to me, Cresselia. I don't deserve your pity."

"I am giving you my sympathy," she insisted. "Raiden, let me apologise. Everything happening is my faul-"

"No, it isn't!" Raiden shouted. "Didn't you hear Darkrai in my dreams? 'Everything happening' is my fault because I let him put me to sleep!"

It was Roger's turn to stare at the sand, most likely at a loss for words. Skuntank didn't say anything either, having gone back to staring at the fire.

Cresselia didn't falter, her soft look stayed on her face. "No. Raiden, when you saved Temporal Tower, Darkrai's plan was already in effect. He prepared to track you down, and strike when you were alone. He wanted to kill all your hopes in his nightmares, so he would gain power from your sorrow and use that to fuel his conquest…"

"Well good job to him," Raiden said, feeling his eyes narrow at Cresselia. "Because he succeeded."

A sniffle came from the goddess, which made all eyes suddenly fall on her.

"Cresselia…?" Skuntank said with uncharacteristic concern.

She hung her head and her bent, dull crescent-wing flickered. "I wasn't strong enough to stop him. I-I had so many chances and I-" Cresselia choked out a sob. "Because of me, he was able to target Raiden. I wasn't strong enough to wake him up, and because of that, you all have suffered…"

The shinx was quiet. He wasn't sure what to say, as he wanted to carry the burden all by himself. It was his fault. Hearing Cresselia cry made his stomach do flips. Raiden wanted to do anything to stop her from crying, to deny her blame in any of this. But he couldn't. In a way, it was her fault that he lost his home. If only Cresselia had been strong enough. If only he hadn't been gullible. He growled. If only he hadn't fallen for Darkrai's tricks. If only he'd been strong enough to stop any of this from happening.

If Seraphina saw this, surely, she'd be disappointed in him.

Roger floated over and gently placed a big fin on her back. Cresselia seemed to stiffen but didn't reject the gesture. "Lady Cresselia, I mean no disrespect, but..." he addressed her with an air of formality. "It doesn't matter whose fault it was," then he glanced at Raiden. "None of you did any wrong."

Raiden felt his breath hitch as he prepared to protest, but Roger continued. "You both keep saying 'my fault, my fault!' but is it? You can throw all the protests you want at me, but the only one to blame for all of this is Darkrai! He's the one who caused all this. He's the one who made it happen, but I'm sure as hell not going to let him get away with it."

"'Bout time someone said it," muttered Skuntank.

It hit Raiden painfully. It was like he'd been hit by a thunder attack, a harsh bolt of truth from the clouds. He saw that it similarly reached Cresselia, as she was quickly recovering from her pity-party. To some degree, Raiden still felt that he was responsible. But his teammate was correct. It was Darkrai's fault! He caused all of it, from Seraphina's amnesia to blanketing the future and present in darkness.

Raiden was flooded with new emotions. He had a burning desire to take down the Pokémon behind all this. He had to do it. For Seraphina, for Grovyle and Celebi…all their hearts were with him. It was up to him to finish what they started.

He had to save the world they all fought so hard to restore.

The shinx stared at Cresselia, the two sharing a look so intense that he could've sworn it made Skuntank jealous. Roger had stirred something inside of them both.

"Sera's last wish was for me to make sure the world didn't fall to darkness again," Raiden said with renewed vigor. His heart ached just saying her name, but he had to put it aside for now. "I haven't exactly lived up to that yet, but I intend to start that now."

"Darkrai has bested me twice," Cresselia faltered, but she lifted her head and Roger drifted back. Slowly, her weakened form restored itself, her previously bent wing lifted, and glowed just as brilliantly as the rest of her. "But he will not get me a third time. Will you all help me defeat him and bring light back to this world?"

Raiden nodded. "I'm with you," he said. "Darkrai hasn't heard the last from me yet."

Roger beamed. "Of course, I'll help you! I intended to from the beginning!"

The three of them glanced at Skuntank, and he sighed. "Why do you want me on your crazy adventure?"

Cresselia tittered. "You came this far to help, haven't you? Please, come with us! The more the merrier!"

"He doesn't have to come," Roger said. "It's going to be super dangerous. He might not survive and-"

Skuntank got to his feet, suddenly energetic. "I-I'll come! Don't worry, Miss Cresselia, you can count on me!"

Raiden blinked. "Are you sure, Skuntank? It's not going to be easy…"

A small cloud of poison was snorted out of his nostrils, which caused the fire to flare up. Roger quickly blasted it with water, putting it out almost instantly. It made their surroundings dark once again, with only Cresselia's glow to illuminate the glare on Skuntank's face. It almost made him look intimidating. "I said I was going to help, alright? Don't make me regret it, Chicken."

Lightning lit up the sky, reminding the group of the titans still duking it out in the ocean. The rain wasn't letting up at all. Raiden didn't want to get soaked again, in fear he'd get sick and not be at his best to fight.

"We need to do something about those two," Roger said. "It's not right, seeing them fight."

"Agreed," Cresselia sounded a lot lighter now. "But right now, we should return to the guild and rest. We must prepare for tomorrow."

"What's happening tomorrow?" Raiden asked.

"If you'd been listening, Chicken, we have a plan to stop them."

"Stop calling me that!"

Skuntank ignored him.

"Right, I'll teleport us back to Raiden's room then," Cresselia announced. "Please close your eyes, everyone."

They did as they were told. Rai squeezed his eyes shut and quickly he found the sand vanishing under his paws. His heart lurched for a moment and fear started to creep in. It was a short moment, but it almost felt like he was in his nightmare again. Once he felt a familiar stone floor under him, he quickly forced his eyes open. Just like Cresselia had promised, they were back in his guild room. There was his bed made of straw, and then Seraphina's bed. He gulped when he realised it was going to remain empty from now on.

"Raiden, are you okay?" Roger asked.

"Huh? Erm, I'm okay."

Cresselia hummed and stared out into the hallway. "I must go. I make my way around the guild at night to make sure everyone has pleasant dreams. Goodnight, and I'll see you all tomorrow."

Raiden and Roger nodded as she left, floating out of Raiden's room and taking the light with her. Skuntank scoffed and started walking after her. "See you tomorrow," was all he said.

That left Rai and his teammate to themselves. The shinx sighed and stepped over to his straw bed, flopping onto it. "Man, I'm so exhausted," he said.

"Well, you did have a fight with the ocean." Rai could almost hear the forced grin in Roger's voice.

"I feel so stupid. If I had drowned, that would have been it…"

"It's best to not think about it. I can't be in Team Overload if there's no team to be on," the cheeriness dropped, and Roger finally showed the sadness he was holding back. "I don't think I could handle it if I lost you as well as Seraphina…"

"I'm sorry, Roger," Rai lowered his head in shame. He'd been so, so stupid lately. "I haven't been myself ever since she left, I didn't even once think about how you'd be feeling."

The whiscash sunk closer to the floor with a sigh. "I'm just glad you're okay. I can keep you safe, it's what she would have wanted."

The shinx nodded slightly. It was hard to admit he'd been incredibly foolish since his partner died, despite her final wishes. He had promised to stay alive, and what did he do? Nearly drowned, of course. The logical way to uphold that promise.

Then in a sudden moment, Raiden looked back up to see Roger was in his face, a large frown on the big whiscash. "Gah!" he yelled in surprise.

"Raiden, I need you to promise me something."

"Yeah, what?"

"I want you to never leave my side out there, okay? I need you to be safe…"

Lightning lit up the room briefly, followed by the loud sound of an explosion. Neither occupant flinched even remotely, a little thunder had never scared either of them. Roger's request was more chilling than the chaotic storm. This fight would be Raiden's biggest one yet, and this time, there was no Seraphina to have his back. What happened to Treasure Town was a grim reminder of what Darkrai was capable of, the image of the massive crater popping into his mind-what was to stop the spirit from doing it again? Any of them could die and there'd be no going back.

"Rai?" Roger said anxiously, "I need you to swear on it. We do this as a team, okay?"

The shinx nodded. There was no idea he could put Roger through the pain of losing another teammate. It just wouldn't be right. "I'm with you, Rog, we do this together. Just like old times."

The air seemed to shift-from tense to somber. A small smile made its way onto Roger's face. "For Seraphina?" he extended a whisker, reaching out to Raiden.

The new leader of Team Overload smiled in return, sticking out a front leg in return. Roger's whisker lightly curled around his leg and they shook. It was something she had taught them-a handshake. It still sounded funny. The memory made his eyes sting with tears.

"Rai," Seraphina chided, her tails flicking with irritation. "If we're going to be a team, you've got to be less reckless! I can't bail you out every time you get poisoned, you know."

"I know!" he replied, stretching the word out as a child would. "I know, but sometimes I can't help it. I just wanna get in there and fight, you get me?"

She stared at him incredulously, "I don't," she said, "I'd rather avoid wasting all our pecha berries every mission, they're going to get expensive!"

"Alright, okay!"

"I want you to shake on it."

"Sorry?"

Seraphina blinked and hummed. "You've never heard of a hand-er, paw shake, before?"

"No…?"

The vulpix sighed and strode over to him, when she stopped, she was almost a leg's length away. She lifted one of her front legs and stretched her digits out. "Now you do the same," then Raiden must have pulled a face because she chuckled. "Don't worry, this isn't a trick or something."

He mimicked her actions, spreading out his own paw. Then Seraphina awkwardly grabbed his paw with her own, and gently shook it. "This is what a handshake is...except it might have been a lot easier to do in my other body."

"This is so strange…" Rai said with a slight chuckle, moving his leg back to the ground when she let go. "Are there any other weird human things you remember?"

"I'll let you know when they come to me," she replied with an unwavering smile. "But you shook on it now, so be more careful!"

"Alright, alright! I will, I promise!" he laughed, causing his partner to do the same.

Raiden stared out the window, glaring at the world Darkrai had messed up. "Yeah, for Seraphina," he declared.

The next morning, Raiden, Roger, Cresselia, and Skuntank all stood before Chatot, who was just glad that the shinx was okay. Other residents of Treasure Town watched on, as well as other members of the guild. "I'm so glad that you're alright, Raiden," Chatot said. "When you ran off yesterday, we were all worried you weren't coming back…"

"Never mind that," Raiden replied. "What's the plan?"

The door to Wigglytuff's office opened, and the guild master himself walked out. Most occupants of the room gasped, and Raiden felt his own eyes widen. Several oran leaf bandages adorned his body, the most obvious one being wrapped around his stomach, others being around his left arm, and another around the middle of his right ear. Despite it all, Wigglytuff had his signature smile. "Raiden!" he said happily, "So good to see you awake. I trust you're ready to help us once again?"

"Wha…?" he'd heard about Wigglytuff being injured trying to fight off Groudon, but he didn't think he'd ever see their guild master in such a state.

Chatot flapped his wings and squawked something unintelligible before speaking. "G-Guildmaster! You should be resting!"

"How are you feeling?" Chimecho asked as she floated over to inspect Wigglytuff.

"Oh, I'm doing fine, don't worry!" he said cheerily, waving off their concerns. "What matters now is that we're ready to counter Darkrai. So, Raiden, are you ready?"

The shinx swallowed and nodded. "Yes, Sir," he said uneasily. "It'll be different fighting without Sera by my side...but I'll do what I can."

Wigglytuff nodded sympathetically, then Skuntank cleared his throat. "So... the plan? If we're doing this, I wanna get going before dark."

"Er, right," Chatot said. "So, we've been in contact with another continent lately because we believed they could help us with Kyogre and Groudon."

"How so?" Raiden asked.

Cresselia glanced over. "How familiar are you with the story of the meteorite that nearly destroyed part of the world thirty planet rotations ago?"

The more Raiden thought about it, the more it sounded familiar, but while he was told it was an event that happened before his time, he couldn't quite remember the details. "It's been a while since I've heard that story. What about it?"

"It's definitely no story," Wigglytuff stated. "Thirty cycles ago, a large meteorite was on course to crash into the air continent, but a brave duo, just like you and Seraphina, set out to track down Rayquaza and make him stop the meteorite."

"That actually happened?" Skuntank questioned.

"Sure did!" Roger said. "They say Rayquaza soared high into the air, met the meteorite in space, and destroyed it with a mighty hyper beam, haha! It must have been a sight to behold."

Bidoof approached the discussion nervously. "S-So, what does Rayquaza have to do with Kyogre and Groudon?"

Chatot cleared his throat and puffed his feathers with confidence as if he was waiting for this moment. "They say whenever Kyogre and Groudon fight, Rayquaza is the only one who can stop them!"

Raiden tilted his head in confusion. "So, we're going to the air continent to track down Rayquaza?"

"Yes, that's the plan," Cresselia said in confirmation. "We'll be seeking out the ones who found Rayquaza and saved the planet all those years ago. They might be getting on in age a little, but they've already agreed to help us."

"Once you track down Rayquaza and get him to help, he should have no problem calming the other two down," Chatot explained. "You should all get ready because the longer Kyogre and Groudon fight...the more I worry about what will happen if a stray move hits us."

"Y-You guys are welcome to any of the gear I have left with me…" said Kecleon

"Don't you worry! We'll be back in no time!" Roger declared. The whiscash swam over to the purple kecleon to take him up on his offer.

"Once we're ready, I'll teleport us," Cresselia said.

"Yeah, no worries," Raiden nodded and looked around the room. He still wasn't used to seeing so many Pokémon in the guild at once. Roger spoke to the remaining Kecleon brother, with Chansey, Duskull and Marowak adding to the conversation. Berries and coins were being traded around. The town may be gone, but the spirit was still there. "I hope one day we can rebuild Treasure Town…" he said to himself.

"Um, Raiden?" Sunflora approached him slowly, with the Marill and Azurill boys tailing her. "I'm really sorry about yesterday. I should have been more careful and-"

Raiden cut her off, smiling gently as he did. "Don't worry about it, okay? I'll be alright."

She nodded in response, then gestured to the brothers. "These two wanted to talk with you as well."

"H-Hi, Raiden!" Marill greeted, sounding a little anxious.

"Mister Raiden!" Azurill cheered. "I'm so happy you're awake!"

"Heh, me too. I'm glad to see you kids are okay," Rai said. "How's your Mom?"

"She's doing really well!" Azurill answered, bouncing happily. "Much better!"

"That's good. Are you okay, Marill?"

The water mouse flinched then sighed. "Th-Thank you for saving the world, Raiden! But…"

The shinx frowned. "But what?" he asked.

"I'm really sorry you have to save the world again... it's not fair."

This surprised Raiden. He didn't expect to hear this at all from a child, and he really couldn't disagree, either. It wasn't fair, but for some reason, he didn't mind so much. "It's okay, Marill. I'm fine. If you guys and everyone else here is safe, I don't care what I have to do."

"Please be safe, okay?"

The shinx nodded. "Don't worry Marill, I'll be back, and the world will be saved again before you know it."

Marill sniffled and ran up, doing his best to hug Rai. Azurill bounced over and hugged Rai's leg. "You can do it, Mister Raiden!"

Sunflora smiled softly, while Rai stared at the two brothers and felt his eyes tearing up. "Aw...you two are gonna make me cry…" he sniffled. He really appreciated it. Seeing the two brothers safe and sound made saving the world worth it.

He enjoyed the moment until Skuntank coughed and stuck his head into the conversation. "Can we get going? I'd like to give this Rayquaza a piece of my mind for not stepping in sooner," he said impatiently.

"Right, okay Skuntank, we can get going," Raiden sighed and then turned his attention back to the brothers, who were just now stepping back. "Be brave and look after your mother."

"We will!" they both said in unison. "Good luck!"

"Good luck Raiden, stay strong," Sunflora said, before leading the brothers away.

"Let's make this quick," said the dark and poison type as they both gathered by Roger and Cresselia. The former seemed to be done talking with the residents and now had a large bag hanging from him, the strap wrapped around his body. "I wanna be back for dinner."

"Dinner may have to wait," said Roger. "Saving the world is a serious business, you sure you can handle it?"

Skuntank scoffed. "Of course, I am. Cresselia asked for my help and I'm not going to say no."

Cresselia smiled at that and bowed her head. "Thank you for helping me."

"Thank us when it's over," Raiden said with a grimace.

"Thank you for everything, Raiden," Wigglytuff said, still smiling. "Please remember that we've all got your back."

"If you need anything, just let us know! Everyone else here will hold down the fort," Chatot added.

"What about the rest of us?" Skuntank narrowed his eyes in annoyance.

Wigglytuff beamed in response. "Good luck to all four of you! I'd like to send you off with our motto, shall we, everyone?"

"Yeah!" many voices around the room shouted.

Chatot's eyes lit up and he about the room, raising his wings. "A one... a two, and a one-two-three!"

Everyone a part of the guild, including Roger, and even most of the residents of Treasure Town rose their voices and spoke as one. It felt like a long time since Raiden had heard the morning cheers. Once again, tears threatened to spill out of his eyes.

"One: Don't shirk work!"

"Two: Runaway and pay!"

"Three: Smiles go for miles!"

Chatot beamed and cleared his throat. "Alright Pokémon, let's give a big cheer for Team Overload!"

"GOOD LUCK!"

"G-Guys... thank you so much!" Raiden sniffled as Roger patted his head with a fin.

"And now let's go," said Skuntank.

Not wanting to waste any more time, Cresselia lit up, as well as Raiden, Roger, and Skuntank. The shinx found himself weightless, and in a flash, the ground underneath him disappeared once again.

Once they reappeared, Cresselia swayed and started to drop. Roger acted quickly and dove under her, letting the moon goddess land on his back. "Thanks, Lady Cresselia, you can rest now," he said gently.

She lifted her head slightly and forced a chuckle "...Forgot how much a big teleport took out of me…"

"Is this the air continent?" Raiden asked.

"Indeed, it is," confirmed Cresselia. "We were expected... just hang on."

"You're the only one that needs to hang on," Skunktank told her. "If teleporting takes this much out of you, you should have done smaller jumps instead of a big one."

Roger did his best to make Cresselia comfortable as he watched Skuntank. "What? You got a crush on her or something?"

"I do not!" he glared at Roger, puffing his cheeks.

"Let's not fight," Raiden sighed. "We're here to find the old heroes and seek out Rayquaza." He broke away from the talking and took in his surroundings. They were on a neatly paved, sandy path, with short grass running alongside it and more trees than Raiden could probably count were standing tall past that. Their path split into three other options, with all of them leading into the unknown. The air felt fresher here, though that might have been due to the intense weather going on back home.

Directly opposite them was a dome-like structure, like that of Wigglytuff's Guild. Except instead of the large, pink head, this one was brown. The mouth of the head was the door, with the eyes being windows-a detail that always bothered Raiden. Big ears jutted out from the head where they'd normally be, and cream painted rocks were placed all around the base of the house, minus the door/mouth, to resemble the fur that would be seen on this type of Pokémon, which was most definitely an eevee. A little mailbox stood proudly in front of the house, except it was bright and yellow, with three, back tufts of wood sticking out from the back to resemble a tail-psyduck, maybe? And a small pond sat on the other side of the path from the door/mouth.

"What a bizarre looking home," Skuntank commented. "I'd prefer my plain-looking hut anyday."

"Hey!" cried a voice. "That's our home you're talking about!"

"Hello?" Raiden called. "I'm sorry, he's just a rude 'mon."

A golduck walked out of the eevee house and looked around. When his eyes fell upon Raiden and his group, his eyes widened, and he quickly jogged up to the four of them. "Oh, Arceus, sorry! I didn't realise you guys would be here so early!" he apologised.

Roger waved a dismissive fin, chuckling. "Sorry, were you still sleeping?"

The golduck nodded and rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. "Uh, yeah. One sec," he turned back to the house and called out. "Hey, Ella! They're here!"

"Ella…?" Raiden blinked in surprise. There were others who had these peculiar names?

"Oh no, more of 'em," grumbled Skuntank. Cresselia had long since fallen asleep on Roger's back, and nobody blamed her. She must have been exhausted.

The Pokémon named 'Ella' walked out of the house, and Raiden gasped. He'd never seen anything like her before. She was a quadruped, covered in pale-cream fur with pink feet, ears and tail. As Ella approached, Raiden took in her bright blue eyes, her tiny nose and the two pink and cream bows on her body. One bow sat at the base of her left ear, and the other on her neck, and coming from both bows were two, long ribbons that seemed longer than her body. All four were tipped light blue, with a darker blue stripe above, and then a pink stripe while the rest was cream coloured like her body. Raiden realised he was staring and tried to look at anything else besides Ella.

"S-Sorry!" he stammered. "I-I don't think I've seen your kind before…"

Roger and the golduck both snickered. "Don't worry," the latter said, "She has that first impression on everyone."

Even Skuntank blinked and stared at the ground.

Ella snorted and attempted to use a ribbon to hide her laughter. "I'm sorry," she spoke and her voice was gentle. In a way, it reminded Raiden of Seraphina, filling him with a sense of longing. "Apparently, Sylveon are known for attracting attention...but I do like this form a lot."

"Sylveon," Roger repeated. "Is that what you are?"

"Sure am!" Ella said. "Sylveon is another evolution of Eevee...you've heard of the fairy type, right?"

"Kinda?" Raiden answered. It wasn't exactly a prominent type on the grass continent where they lived, but apparently fairy type Pokémon showed up more in the other lands.

Golduck spoke up next, the gem on his forehead shining in the sun. "Yeah, so Sylveon is just a fairy type Eevee, pretty cool, huh?"

Roger and Raiden nodded in agreement, while Skuntank just scoffed. Then Ella gasped. "Oh, sorry! Where are our manners? I'm Ella, and this is Corsair," she pointed to the golduck using one of her ribbons. "Wigglytuff sent letters with a Drowzee our way, explaining the situation. I'm really sorry about what's going on…"

"You don't have to worry," Roger reassured her, adjusting Cresselia slightly on his back. "Once we get a hold of Rayquaza, we'll be out of your fur."

"So... why do you guys have them 'name' things like Shinx and Whiscash here? I thought they were the only ones," Skuntank asked.

Ella blinked, then her eyes widened. "Oh, nobody told you?"

"Told us what?"

Corsair piped up. "Ella used to be a creature called a 'human', they had this thing where they had names, so they didn't call each other 'Human', so after a while everyone here adopted the idea from me and Ella. She named me a little after we met."

Raiden paused, then it clicked as he barely registered the gasps from Roger and Skuntank. His stomach lurched and his breathing hitched. Human. Ella had been Human. There was no way, that had to be a coincidence, right? Seraphina was gone, but why was she still here? Why wasn't Ella gone? Did Ella not come from the future? So many questions filled his mind, making him feel confused, dizzy and sick. Another Human. Another Human...

"Rai?" Roger frowned at him, "Are you okay?"

"You don't look so good," Corsair commented.

Raiden heard Ella gasp. "Oh my gosh, I remember! Wigglytuff said the Shinx went by 'Raiden'-and he used to have a human partner!"

He couldn't tell which voice was what anymore, his body slumped and he felt himself go faint.

Part Three

The sun beat down on Raiden as he stood atop Sharpedo Bluff. He took in the fresh, salty air as he listened to the ocean waves crash into the rocks below. Today was another perfect day for the luxray and his partner. A beautiful, golden white-furred ninetales climbed out from the inside of the bluff, the place where they both lived since they graduated from the guild. She walked up beside Raiden, then copied him, sitting and taking in the salty air and soft breeze.

"I can see why you love it up here," Seraphina said, her tails swishing with content.

Raiden nodded. "I can hear all my thoughts up here. There's no Loudred to scream until our ears bleed, no rants from Chatot about keeping my mane tidy…"

Seraphina chuckled, the sound making Raiden's heart flutter. He could never forget such a beautiful noise. "Chatot is right, you know," she responded. "If you just cleaned yourself up a little, he wouldn't bother you so much."

She turned to him, and he opened his eyes to gaze upon her. "So," Seraphina continued. "You wanna get going? Rayquaza challenged us to a fight in this far away dungeon—we're going to need to get going if we want to get back at a reasonable time."

"We gotta wake up Roger," Raiden heard himself groan. It was always such a difficult task.

"Oh yes," Seraphina chuckled. "That fish could sleep through an earthquake if he wanted."

The two shared a laugh amid enjoying each other's company. When they settled down again, Raiden cleared his throat. "Say, Sera, if you had the choice to return to the future and be with Grovyle and Celebi… would you?"

"Of course not," she answered immediately. "That wouldn't be fair on you, and I couldn't ever leave my best friend. You suffered so much after I left. I… felt it. I can't explain how, but it was awful. I'm proud of you for never giving up. I love you."

Something faint echoed on the wind. The luxray strained to hear it, but he couldn't make it out.

Seraphina gave him a concerned look. "You okay, Rai?"

He nodded. "I, yeah, just thought I heard something. I'm alright."

The ninetales nodded and leaned over, nuzzling Raiden. His breath hitched, too stunned to reciprocate. Seraphina gave him a smug grin and sauntered away. "C'mon, Rai, let's get going!"

"Alright, I'll catch up in a sec," he chuckled.

The second he took a step, however, everything vanished.

"Wh-Sera?!" he cried.

Raiden!

His eyes slowly opened as he looked around with a daze. Roger poked Raiden with a whisker once and tried for a second until he slowly swatted it away. He inspected himself to find he was still a shinx, and that was when the disappointment sank in. Raiden rubbed his eyes upon realising he'd been crying.

"Are you okay?" Roger asked worriedly. "I saw you were crying, and I just wanted you to wake up. Was it Darkrai?"

Raiden sat up, clenching his eyes shut and shaking his head. "I… I saw Sera, we were evolved, together a-and really strong explorers…"

Roger stared at his teammate with sad eyes. "Oh. I'm so sorry, Raiden."

The shinx managed a nod, and a cough interrupted them. They turned their attention to the golduck and Corsair waved a clawed hand. "Hey, Raiden, yeah? You mind if we go for a walk really quick?"

"We don't really have time for walks," Raiden grumbled, yet he got up regardless. Roger gave him room to breathe as he inspected the house. He had been sleeping in a small straw bed that was not unlike his own back at the guild. It sat on a raised platform, and behind him was a clear view of trees through the window. Three flower pots sat in a line from the step that led to his borrowed bed, with another window in the wall next to them. The floor was made of evenly cut, wooden floorboards, though a few of them were a darker brown than the rest.

Diagonal from Raiden was a smooth, wooden table, and sitting around it on seats that resembled tree stumps were Ella, Corsair and Skuntank, the latter munching on a berry that came from the bowl on the table. A much larger straw bed was placed at the back wall, with Cresselia, now awake, floating above it. She gave Raiden a nod that he returned, before spotting a framed image of a map on the wall beside her. A quick glance told him it was a map of their whole world, and suddenly Raiden felt rather small in his shinx body. How was he going to stand up to anyone like this?

Ella and Corsair shared a glance, it was all they needed to communicate. It filled Rai with jealousy. "I know things are urgent, Raiden," Ella said gently. "But I think you should hear Corsair out. You'd be interested to hear his story."

Roger placed a fin atop Rai's head, and he lowered his voice to a whisper. "If anyone can relate to what you are dealing with right now, it'd be him. It won't hurt us if you have this chat."

Raiden tried to protest. "But everyone back home will get hurt! Darkrai will make Groudon or Kyogre attack the guild and they'll be—"

Cresselia nodded, agreeing with Roger. "We'll gather some supplies while you two talk, I think you should really hear this."

Skuntank just scoffed down another berry.

"Come, Rai," Corsair said, walking to the exit and ushering for the shinx to follow. "Can I call you that?"

Rai shrugged and he followed with a defeated sigh. "I guess so."

"We'll head to town, then." Ella said, "Come, Skuntank, maybe we can find a name for you out here!"

He choked and struggled to swallow his food. "Krh-! Like hell you will! I ain't getting one of those name things. I'm Skuntank!"

Roger chuckled and glanced at Cresselia. "What about you?" he asked her. "Would you like a name as well? It really makes you feel like a different 'mon."

Cresselia hummed. "I'll think about it, though the idea does sound lovely."

Skuntank's eyes lit up. "Oh! Then I guess I won't mind one then, I could be somethin' like Sharp Tooth!"

Corsair blinked and Roger laughed. Ella just stared at the poison-type. "Err…we'll workshop it," she said uneasily.

"Right, let's go, Rai. We'll leave Ella to it," Corsair took quick steps, wanting to put some distance between the house and the chat they were about to have. Raiden struggled a little to keep up as he followed the golduck away from the house and Pokémon Square.

The duo trekked along a quiet, long path that only seemed to take them in one direction, the trees on either side of the path never loosened up or became denser, and Raiden was struggling to figure out where they were going. A few times Raiden expected Corsair to talk, but the golduck seemed too busy for any kind of conversation. He seemed to be in deep focus.

Then, like magic, the path stretched out. A giant, old building sat at the end of the road, with trees all around it. It was nothing like Raiden had ever seen before. It was tall, decrepit and grey. Pipes jutted from one side and connected to some round object, which was all guarded by a looped, metal fence. A rectangular hole was carved into the front of the building, which Raiden assumed was the entrance. The shinx stared and stared, but he could not figure out what it was. Though he did feel something pulling him closer.

Electricity.

Raiden felt tingles in his fur so much that it tickled him. It was like the air itself was charged with it, his body just yearning to absorb it all in. A small urge within wanted the shinx to run inside and bask in it all, to just relax and take in the crackles in the air.

"I knew you'd like it here," Corsair said with a chuckle. "Though I'm not totally fond of the place, it gives me shivers."

"What is this place?" Raiden asked.

"Ella told me it was a Power Plant," explained the golduck, as he walked over to a tree stump to sit on. "Back in the human world, apparently they were used to generate electricity instead of Pokémon. Here it is a home for electric types, namely ones that Ella and I have recruited on our adventures."

"How does this place even exist?"

"Good question, but I don't have a proper answer," said Corsair. "This place is an abnormal mystery dungeon. Instead of having Wildies and stuff, this just has different habitats for some reason. If you're after a certain one you just think of it. Eventually it shows up."

Raiden blinked, scanning the old building once more. He wasn't even inside, and he was already feeling relaxed and refreshed. He felt ready to take on the world.

He wondered if Seraphina would have known what such a building was, as a human from an alternate future. But he'd never know now.

His heart sank as he stared at the ground.

"I used to have that look, too."

Raiden quickly snapped his head up and noticed that Corsair had a peculiar look on his face. Pity? No… Sympathy.

The golduck sighed and looked up at the sky, though Rai could sense that he was staring at something far beyond it. "I try not to remember. But when Ella vanished, I felt…empty. We'd just beaten Rayquaza and forced him to break that meteor. We were heroes. And then…" Corsair clenched his webbed hands into fists. "She had to say goodbye."

Raiden sucked in a breath as he stared back at the veteran. Someone could relate to him! Suddenly his feelings and his grief felt validated.

He continued. "I…remember feeling angry. I was mad at the gods for taking my best friend away! It was unfair, why did she have to go? I started blaming everything for my sadness, stopped going on missions, ignored all my friends…sound familiar at all?"

Raiden nodded, taking a few steps forward. "How did she come back?"

"Hard to say," replied the veteran. "Ella said she remembered dreaming about a Gardevior, the one who brought her to this world. She pleaded to return and got her wish. I didn't care about the details, she was back."

"I don't think she ever mentioned Gardevoir in her dreams at all…" muttered the shinx. "She came here with Grovyle to take the time gears and save the present and future. There was an accident coming here, and she was transformed into a vulpix, with no memories at all."

"I wonder…why no memories?" Corsair questioned, his gaze returning to the sky. "Seems awfully coincidental that both human-turned-mons arrived with amnesia."

Raiden gave a grim smile. "Not complaining, it helped me meet Sera. She…changed my whole life."

The golduck nodded in understanding. A soft smile formed on his face and Corsair looked down at Raiden. "I really admire you; you know."

Rai's eyes widened in shock. "What?" he gasped. "M-Me?"

Corsair chuckled and poked the shinx with a claw. "Yes, you!"

"Why?"

"Look at you! You're still standing after all that. You beat Dialga, didn't you? You must be super strong, kiddo! I can't wait to see you in action if we gotta fight Rayquaza!"

Raiden felt a smile come to his face. Next to him sat an older explorer, a Pokémon who had gone through what he had so many years ago. This legendary hero was praising him. "I did have help, though."

Corsair patted the young shinx, giving him a determined look. "Your partner will come back," he insisted. "And if she manages to lose her way back? I will help you find her. I promise."

Raiden's heart filled with warmth at the proclamation. Corsair wanted to help him. It filled him with joy, a few sparks jumped from his fur, causing Corsair to lean back a bit. "Thank you, so much," Raiden breathed. "For sharing your story, and everything you said. It really helped."

"I'm glad. Let's get going, shall we?"

Raiden nodded. "Yeah. We've got a sky god to chat to."

Corsair stood up and started walking. "Stay close, don't want you to end up in some ocean or something on our way out."

Eager to not end up in another ocean, the shinx followed the golduck quickly. "Don't worry, I'm right behind you."

Sera could come back.

Raiden would make sure of it.

It was a short walk back to the house, trekking quietly back down the path that they came. It was then that Raiden began to feel a peculiar cold chill. It was nothing like the breeze that had been blowing, but rather it was the chill of something dark. Something…foreboding.

It sent shivers all through Raiden's fur.

"Look out!" Raiden pushed into Corsair with all his might, sending the two sprawling into the ground. The golduck glared at Rai as he got to his feet. "What the hell was that for?!"

"Look!" Raiden said, pointing.

Corsair quickly glanced back to see that in their place was now a gaping, dark void that crawled with shadows. Raiden sensed the ominous, dark powers within as it slowly closed with no victims to claim. Corsair gasped.

"What the heck was that?" he asked, staring at the spot on the ground in shock. Raiden had a feeling he was waiting for the ground to open again. "Whatever it was, thank you. You saved me!"

"I… don't know," Raiden answered, returning the veteran's thanks with a nod. Any other time he'd be elated right now. "But I sensed something scary behind it. I was getting this chill and…" he paused. The shinx had felt this feeling before, somewhat recently in fact. But where…?

"Well, I'm certainly glad we didn't touch it," Corsair was saying as he got to his feet. "That hole looked kinda spooky. Gave me some evil, nightmarish vibes."

Rai's eyes widened. "That's it!" he cried. "Corsair, we need to hurry back!"

"What? What's going on?"

"It's Darkrai!" cried Raiden. "That was one of his tricks, I know it! He's here!"

The golduck's eyes widened, and he seemed to make a quick decision in his mind. Corsair looked back to the path they had been on. "Go on without me," he said. "Hurry back, go!"

"What about you?" asked Raiden. "Aren't you coming?"

Corsair nodded. "I will, but I'm gonna get help. You run ahead and see if everyone is okay. Can you do that for me?"

A huge, primal roar suddenly pierced the air. The ground shook beneath their feet. Both explorers young and old stared at each other with shock.

"What was…?"

Corsair gasped, then pushed Rai forward. "I know that cry from anywhere. Hurry! That was Rayquaza!"

Raiden swallowed his fear. There was no time to hesitate. Rai turned from Corsair and bolted down the path, feeling his determination rise. This was it. There was no more hiding. In fact, Rayquaza turning up made things easier. They needed the sky god to quell Kyogre and Groudon.

As he darted down the path, the sky began to turn dark despite everything being sunny just before. Clouds churned and darkened the closer he got, forming in one place and swirling just above a particular spot. Raiden reached Corsair and Ella's house and kept running, not bothering to see if anyone was outside.

He couldn't afford to stall; the clouds were forming above Pokémon Square. The wind began to pick up, fighting him at every step.

Raiden glanced up in time to catch a green head emerging from the cloud formation, and piercing, glowing red eyes. What followed was green horns, two arms, various rudder-shaped fins, yellow markings and long, serpentine body as the creature slithered out from the clouds. Once the tail emerged it snaked through the air, glaring down at Pokémon Square with a similar screech to the one Raiden had heard just moments ago.

"Rayquaza…?" Raiden asked himself. His running had slowed as he looked up to marvel at the powerful god of the skies.

"Oi, Chicken!"

Raiden immediately snapped his gaze back to his path to see Skuntank, Roger and Ella near a bridge leading to town. Each had varying looks of determination, or in Skuntank's case, anger. "Looks like we won't be needing to climb that dungeon to get to him," said the poison type.

"Where's Corsair?" Roger asked as Raiden caught up to them. It was just hitting the shinx how out of breath he was, for he stopped to gain some air back into his lungs.

"Went to… get help!" he wheezed. "We heard the roar…and were nearly hit by Darkrai's trap!"

Roger's expression darkened. "I'm glad you weren't."

Ella stared up at Rayquaza, her eyes narrowed and her ribbons flowing quickly. "Something's not right! His eyes should be yellow!"

"Then why are they red?" Skuntank snapped.

"I don't know!" she cried.

"Where's Cresselia?" Rai asked.

"She had a bad feeling," Roger explained quickly. "She vanished and then Rayquaza showed up. Is this because of Darkrai?"

A light shone in Rayquaza's mouth, and it began to grow. The sky god angled his head downwards, aiming right for the centre of the square. Ella's eyes widened. "No!" she yelled, and immediately bolted forward.

"Ella, wait!" Raiden shouted, and he, Roger and Skuntank quickly followed the sylveon. Residents of Pokémon Square were fleeing. A flock of butterfree were shouting and flying away from the square. Raiden had to dodge a granbull, a weepinbell, two kecleon that looked very similar to those he knew, and a kangaskhan carrying a swalot, with a cubone, a treeko and her own child tucked safely in her pouch.

"You know the drill!" roared Kangashkan. "Get moving! Hurry!"

"Ella!" called a persian as she ran past the group. "You're going the wrong way! Get Corsair and run!"

"Sorry, Beatrice!" Ella called back. "I'm gonna stop Rayquaza!"

Pellipper carried smaller Pokémon in their beaks, other residents evacuated as quickly as they could all while Rayquaza prepared his shot.

The sylveon glared up at the god of the skies and shouted. "Zephyr, listen! It's me, Ella, don't you see what you're doing?! Stop it!"

The attack continued to charge.

"Why the hell aren't we running?!" Skuntank shouted. "We're no good to anyone dead!"

Raiden didn't answer, instead he charged up electricity, feeling it coarse through him like at the power plant. The moment he caught up to Ella, he aimed a powerful bolt skyward, striking Rayquaza directly. A painful cry escaped the god, causing those below him to flinch.

"Zephyr!" Ella tried again. "This isn't you!"

The winds were fierce, and a hot white beam fired.

Everything seemed to slow down. Roger swam over to Raiden to shield him, Skuntank watched in horror, and Ella continued to stare up at Zephyr.

This was it. Raiden knew they were going to die. He shut his eyes tight to prepare himself for what was to come. "I-I'm sorry, Sera…" he said, feeling the guilt slowly seep in. "I tried…"

The ground shook and an explosion sounded off in the distance. When no beam arrived, Roger's words got the shinx to open his eyes. "Corsair…? Cresselia?"

Raiden managed to peek out from under Roger, and he saw a sight that stuck with him forever.

Corsair stood on top of a magnezone, and beside them floated three powerful psychics. Xatu, Cresselia, and Alakazam, who had a white beard, moustache and wielded five spoons instead of two. Barriers of shimmering light had formed in front of each Pokémon in the air, which had successfully repelled the hyper beam that had been about to destroy all of Pokémon Square.

They had been saved.

"W-Woah…" Skuntank collapsed to the ground. "That was…that was way too close!"

"Indeed," agreed Roger as he moved to help Skuntank back up. "Rai, are you alright?"

"Y-Yeah…thank you for shielding me."

"I'd do it again if I had to," replied the whiscash calmly. He grunted as Skuntank's paw met his fin, and he lifted the poison-type back to his feet.

"How are you guys so calm?! We almost died!"

Xatu stared at Skuntank, filling him with a strange sense of unease.

Raiden glanced back at Ella, who was staring up at the air group as they descended. He heard a sniffle from the sylveon. "Y-You guys…" she sobbed. "Why did you all risk yourselves like that?!"

Corsair hopped off of Magnezone and patted their metal body. "Thanks, Magnum." Magnum buzzed something in return and Raiden understood that they were simply brushing off the thanks. Corsair stepped towards Ella. "Do we… need a reason to protect… our home…?" he fell forward.

"Corsair!" Ella shrieked as her ribbons stretched out and caught him. The golduck was clearly spent from needing to reflect such a powerful attack. Even Alakazam, as he reverted to his normal form, looked tired. Ella lowered Corsair to the ground and channelled healing power into the golduck with her ribbons. "You idiot. You always struggled with psychic moves, so why…?"

Corsair sighed as the healing slowly took effect. "It's…not fair that humans always have to sacrifice themselves," he mumbled. "It only made sense that we did something. Pokémon are just as powerful…" his eyes fluttered shut.

"N-No!" Ella cried.

Raiden winced, but he knew Corsair had a point. Why did it always have to be the humans who went away? Ella and Seraphina had sacrificed so much…

"He'll be fine," Alakazam said as he approached. "Corsair just needs rest," then he glanced up at Rayquaza in the air, who was still recovering from the hyper beam. "Fascinating…"

Ella stared at him. "Kent?"

The alakazam glanced back. "I'm sensing something rather abnormal about our friend Zephyr…"

"That would be Darkrai. I fear he has Rayquaza trapped in a nightmare like he does Kyogre and Groudon," Cresselia explained.

"Cresselia, what do we do?" Raiden asked.

The group all looked up to see that the serpent was beginning to recover, his blue eyes shone amidst the windstorm. A gust picked up, and those who weren't levitating struggled to remain where they were until it died down. Trees that were bending with the wind were back to their normal, upright position. For now.

"Fight him," replied Cresselia.

"Are you serious?!" Skuntank snapped. "Isn't Rayquaza meant to be like, super strong or something?"

Raiden couldn't help but feel a spike of fear shoot through him. Could they really do this?

"Don't give up," Kent said. "We haven't even started, and collectively we've faced threats like this before. If we time it right, we can combine our attacks to overpower him."

Raiden nodded, stowing away his fear. They had to do this. For everyone. "Are you going to help us do that?"

Kent was going to reply, but Cresselia caught his attention. The goddess sucked in a breath and began to glow with mystic energy. She stared defiantly up at Rayquaza, who was beginning to move again. The serpent roared and descended. A strong gust of dark wind followed as it washed over everyone. Kent formed a barrier like the one from before and used it to protect himself and the unconscious golduck, as did Xatu. Roger covered Raiden again and took the brunt of the damage. Rai felt a harsh sting against his fur as some of the wind got past Roger. The whiscash grunted in pain but still he persisted. The shinx had to dig his claws into the ground to avoid being pushed out from underneath his friend.

"Roger!" he cried.

"I-I'm fine! This is nothing compared to a grass attack!"

Cresselia had acted quickly and formed a barrier to protect herself and Skuntank. Ella simply stood there with Magnum, and neither seemed to be harmed all that much, if at all.

Once the wind had faded, a bright light came from Rayquaza and engulfed him completely.A different storm picked up around them. His body stretched out and tendrils emerged from his horns. The light faded to reveal a three-pointed symbol on his head, yellow markings had become golden and when Raiden squinted, he could see particles coming from Rayquaza's now much larger jaw. The god of the sky now had a black and emerald sheen to him, and the look in his eyes was no less violent, and as red as before.

"Careful!" Cresselia gasped as her protection vanished. "Rayquaza has mega evolved! He's much stronger like this…!"

"This is insane!" shouted Skuntank. "How the heck do we go up against this guy?!"

"I am sorry," said Kent, falling to his knees as his barrier faded. "I'm not as strong as I used to be, but I shall take Corsair and look after him. The rest of my team should be here soon to back you all up."

"Thank you," said Ella. "For everything."

Kent nodded, and in a flash, he and Corsair were gone.

"Please fight Rayquaza while I charge," Cresselia instructed as she retreated to the back. "I need time to destroy Darkrai's hold on him."

Everyone else nodded. It was time to fight.

Rai glanced back at Xatu, who continued to stare. It was really beginning to creep Raiden out, why wasn't he talking?

Rayquaza charged up a blue beam in his maw. "Scatter!" Ella shouted as she jumped on Magnum. The two got moving. Cresselia flew into the air to avoid what was coming.

Roger plucked Raiden up with his fins and quickly carried him away. "R-Roger, put me down!"

"In a sec!" grunted the whiscash.

Skuntank barely managed to skirt out of the way as the dragon pulse burst the very ground apart, making a nice crater in the Square. "I'm really starting to hate these gods!" Skuntank bellowed, and he breathed fire at Rayquaza, the flames doing very little damage at a glance.

The second Roger placed Raiden back down, the shinx growled. "You jerk!" he shouted. "This is a town filled with friends you're about to destroy! Don't you see?!"

Rayquaza focused on him as glowing, transparent rocks materialised around the serpent before they were tossed at Rai. He moved quickly as they each struck the spot he'd been in while he dashed to avoid the attack. Raiden retaliated with a thunderbolt that struck him directly, earning him a frustrated growl. A ball of pink energy slammed into Rayquaza while he was focused on Rai, and Magnum floated towards the shinx with Ella still riding on top.

"The three of us will be the most effective here," she said. "We should team up and strike Zephyr hard! Roger, have you got any ice to make four?"

"Sure do!" he replied before firing a light blue beam at Rayquaza. The serpent flew up to avoid the attack, glaring.

"Let's all fire at him at once, then!" Ella declared.

"Sounds like a plan!" Raiden said. He heard the magnezone buzz something similar.

"What about me?!" Skuntank whined.

"Just do what you can!" Roger answered.

Rayquaza returned Roger's attack by firing a beam very similar to his own. The whiscash quickly swam out of the way, and the spot that had been struck in his place was frozen solid.

The sky god then rushed towards Skuntank with alarming speed. Rayquaza's head took on a metallic sheen and his eyes widened. He tried to move but his legs wouldn't work. Skuntank screamed.

"No, Skuntank!" Raiden cried.

Before Rayquaza could connect with the attack, his iron head was met with a tyranitar, barging in and halting the serpent with his strength.

Raiden heard Ella cheer. "West! You made it!"

West risked a glance back at Skuntank and grunted. "Run! I can't hold Zephyr off for much longer!"

Skuntank didn't need to be told twice, he scrambled away.

A charizard arrived by air, stopping beside Cresselia. Raiden's widened. "Is this… the rest of Team A.C.T?"

"Sure is!" Charizard answered. "Wayne at your service!"

West and Rayquaza roared as their struggle intensified. Raiden watched with wide eyes, waiting for Ella's command to attack. The tyranitar was blasted by a dragon pulse. West slid back as he took the brunt of the blast. He swayed slightly and shook off the daze. In that time, Rayquaza aimed a brown beam at Wayne and Cresselia, so the charizard burst forward and folded his wings in front of him, creating a bright barrier that absorbed the attack with ease, though the power of the attack pushed Wayne back slightly. "Geeze, if we're not careful, Zephyr will take out the entire square. How long have you got, Lady Cresselia?"

"Still a bit more. Please, hold on!"

Raiden felt something poke him and glanced to see Ella pointing to a place with her ribbons. Go there! she seemed to be saying. So, he followed her direction, and realised that Roger had also similarly gotten into position. Magnum hummed with electricity, like he was charging an attack. The shinx took this opportunity to charge his own, absorbing energy like the magnezone to prepare.

West stomped a foot on the ground, causing it to split apart. Stalagmites sprouted from the ground, aiming to pierce Rayquaza. The sky god took to the air again, easily repelled from a ground assault.

Ella shouted. "Now!" and she jumped, using her ribbons for extra momentum.

Magnum buzzed and unleashed a powerful, blue bolt of lightning. Raiden took his cue and discharged his yellow electricity into his own, powerful attack. On the other side of the square, an ice beam came from Roger.

Skuntank growled, "Take this, stupid snake!" and the tip of his tail split open to fire a shadow ball. Wayne added a fire blast. West launched a beam of darkness. Then finally, Ella was brimming with mystic energy, and a pink ball formed above her before it too was fired at Rayquaza.

The attacks all struck Rayquaza in a colourful explosion and he screamed in pain, enough to make Ella and the present members of Team A.C.T wince. The harsh wind began to die down, and Rayquaza glowed. His form shrank, and he returned to something a little more recognizable.

Raiden felt his heart swell with pride as Ella landed beside him, a big grin on her face. "That was awesome, Rai!" she cheered. The shinx felt a little embarrassed from the praise.

"Ehe… it was nothing," he replied, rubbing the back of his head.

Magnum buzzed a warning that was accompanied by a shout of "Ella, look out!" and they both turned to see Rayquaza flying right for them at a speed too fast to counter. Raiden didn't need any time to think on what to do next: he pushed Ella before she could react. Rayquaza's clawed hand reached out and closed around him tightly. Rai saw nothing but darkness, and he heard all the shouts quickly grow faint, was he going up?

He clawed rapidly at his cage, hearing the sky god grunt from the pain. It was enough for Rayquaza to move a digit, and suddenly Rai could see clouds and he wriggled himself into a position where his head alone stuck out from his prison. They had stopped going up, and even from where he was, he could pick out the two titans in the ocean still fighting. It was only a matter of time before the collateral destroyed everything he'd come to love about this world. "Rayquaza, snap out it!" he screamed. "Darkrai's got you in a nightmare, you need to wake up!"

"Hold on Rai, I'm coming!" Cresselia! That's right, she had the power to free him!

Rayquaza still didn't reply, and as he stared into the eyes of the serpent, he could have sworn he heard Darkrai's voice.

"Throw him!"

His heartbeat became the only thing he could hear, pounding loudly as if it were all around him. Rai could feel Rayquaza's digits moving ever so slightly. Very briefly, Rai felt his prison squeeze around him. Then he was lifted. High. Higher. As high as Rayquaza's arm could go. Any second now the shinx would be plummeting to earth faster than the speediest bird.

Raiden inhaled, focusing on what was left of his electric energy. He'd used a fair bit of it on his previous attack, so he had to dig deep. Raiden had to let loose every bit of power he could muster. Once he found what he was looking for, Rai wasted no time in letting it all go. Instantly, Rayquaza lit up just as the shinx did, one discharging as much electricity as possible, the other taking it all like he'd been struck by lightning. A strangled roar replaced the heartbeat in his ears. Raiden winced, but he didn't let up. He searched and searched for every bit of power he could muster, pushing it out onto the god that had been about to murder him in his sleep.

In the corner of his vision, Raiden saw a glimmer of pink. Then everything turned white. When the light died down, he felt strange. Stronger, confident. But strange. However, Rai had no time to focus on that.

He was falling.

Raiden flailed his paws, his legs swiping through clouds. There wasn't even anything to grab onto up here. He spun as he fell, having no way to even remotely control his descent.

"Rai, no!" Cresselia screamed in his mind.

He hadn't even heard himself screaming until then.

Then something slammed into him. It was rough, soft, and for a moment everything spun a lot more. Rai got a brief glimpse of a fire, then something pink and glowing far above. Something green.

"I gotcha!" said a gruff voice. "Stop movin' around or we'll both go splat!"

Rai's body stilled, acting on self-preservation alone. Then slowly things came to a stop, and Rai's vision was still doing loops.

He thought he was going to be sick.

"Deep breaths," instructed the voice. "In and out. You alright, buddy?"

Rai listened to the voice, and slowly his senses were coming back to him. Orange arms were wrapped around his body from under his front legs, which seemed longer than he was used to. His rescuer felt warm, toasty, and…

"W-Wayne…?" Rai rasped.

"Sure is!" said the charizard. "Boy, if I knew you were gonna evolve I would become a mega to carry you! You're a little heavier than you look!"

Rai flinched, suddenly feeling the need to defend his eating habits, but a word caught his attention. "Wait… did you say…e-evolve?!"

"Sure did! Congrats, Buddy! You evolved into Luxio!"

His breath hitched as he inspected his legs. Instead of a singular, yellow stripe on his front legs, there were now two. Rai was certain that if he could see his reflection, he'd see a messy, little mane of black fur around his head. The newly evolved luxio cheered, kicking out his legs. Wayne shouted and had to readjust his hold on Rai, as the celebration nearly caused him to fall. "I… I can't believe it!" Rai cried. "I finally evolved! I evolved! I—"

Then it sunk in.

"I… evolved."

He was a luxio, before Sera could ever be a ninetales.

He felt his ears and tail droop in response to his sudden mood shift. His heart sank. He'd been looking forward to this moment forever, and yet the one who he had wanted to witness it was unable to.

Wayne said nothing, having most likely sensed the change, and turned his direction upwards. Rai followed the charizard's gaze to see a dazzling, bright glow further up in the sky. He could barely make out Rayquaza and Cresselia in the middle of it.

"What's she doing…?" Rai asked.

"Trying to undo whatever Darkrai did to Zephyr, I imagine," Wayne replied.

"Is it working?"

Wayne grunted. "Dunno, guess we'll see."

The charizard didn't hang around much further after that. With a quick warning, Wayne began his descent back towards the ground. This time they were at a much more controlled and preferred pace. No more tumbling through the sky. No more dying.

It continued to shine brightly behind them as they got further and further away from Rayquaza. Back to the square. Raiden could pick out the familiar shapes of his friends as they got just a little bit bigger in his vision. Roger shouted something that was lost to him before he waved his fins. Raiden didn't have the energy to wave or even shout anything back. Wayne was rather warm, and his scales were reminiscent of a soft bed. He was starting to realise just how tired he was. Rai felt his eyes and body go heavy, and so as he further relaxed in Wayne's arms, he felt everything drifting further away.

Shadows and light were fighting. Darkness beat against a bright, pink glow, with Rai's only other surroundings being similar skirmishes all around. Each time there was a clash, the victor was mostly undecided. Both sides parted before combating once again, with a little darkness seeping past the lines. It was an uphill battle, and the light was struggling. He tried taking steps, an attempt to explore where he was, but it felt aimless. Was he even going anywhere?

Something about this felt familiar, but not in a good way. Both sides gave off their own, signature energies he was becoming accustomed to. The pink light filled him with warmth, the sense that nothing could go wrong. A light that chased the dark away. But the darkness was cold, chilling, and unforgiving. Rai knew the hard way that a sign of weakness led to being consumed by it. Once one was trapped, it was hard to escape. He also knew that if he gave up, the darkness would win.

"Such a burden, isn't it?"

Rai whirled around, finding himself in the presence of the god behind it all. His anger flared, and quickly he found he was quite powerless. He couldn't channel the bolts he so wanted to fill Darkrai with. "What do you want?" Rai sneered.

"I must congratulate you on your evolution," Darkrai said. He moved closer, and shadows pooled from his body and leaked into the realm. More darkness joined the fight. Rai found himself lifting a paw to avoid a bit that flowed past him. "For a while, I didn't think you had it in you, honestly. Expending all your electricity like that must have shocked your body enough to trigger it. Fascinating…"

Unease. Raiden stepped back as the feeling made his fur tingle. Despite that, he glared, holding firm. He wasn't about to give Darkrai any more satisfaction than he'd already given him. The god of nightmares must have noticed that no reply was coming because he looked disappointed. "You can't even humour me…?"

"Why should I?!" Raiden snapped.

Darkrai did nothing but give a cold, dark stare in return. "You think you and that stupid Golduck are the only ones who have lost someone?" His voice was low and dangerous. The luxio tried not to shudder.

"I-I–" Raiden stammered.

"Pokémon lose loved ones all the time. What makes you two so special? Golduck even got his. Partner. Back!" Darkrai darted forward, and Raiden stumbled away. The ghostly hair lifted from the spirit's face, both eyes were now glowing a deep, chilling red. Before Rai could take another step, or muster an answer, a hand shot out and grasped his neck. He wheezed as Darkrai lifted him off the ground, red eyes piercing into the luxio's very being. He found himself staring back, and slowly as sense of dread was filling his heart. Give up. His mind was filled with those two words, over and over. Give up. You're no match. Give up. You're weak. Give up! Once the luxio forced his own eyes shut, the thoughts got quieter, but the dread and negativity remained. It made his whole body feel weak.

Rai let out a strangled gasp and tried to swipe his paws at Darkrai's arm, but any attempt phased through the spirit's body. The grip on his throat tightened, and it made his vision blur. He couldn't breathe, and any time he struggled, it only seemed to make Darkrai angrier. "Tell me why I can't get my partner back! Tell me!" Raiden's ears rang as the spirit screeched. He could only wheeze in response; his vision was filled with nothing but the one choking him, the corners of his sight had gone dark, and slowly all of it was fading.

Desperate, Rai searched for any remaining electricity within him, and he let it out. The spark was enough to reach into his reserve, and Darkrai lit up like a lightning rod. A pained cry escaped his captor, and when neither let up, an image flashed into his mind. A blue and black bipedal Pokémon. A lucario. They smiled, then he heard a voice.

"I'll show you the human world one day, okay? I promise."

Before Rai could question it, Darkrai roared and he was tossed, sending the luxio across the realm. He hit the ground in a roll and when he stopped, Rai took in as much air as he could, wheezing and coughing as he did. His vision slowly came back into focus. When he looked back at Darkrai, he saw that one eye was now back to being covered, and both had turned blue once again. The spirit was staring at Rai, both hands placed firmly on his head.

"What did…what did you do?"

He heard the sadness in Darkrai's voice. The confusion, the pain. All of it. It made Raiden pause.

He took a step forward. The luxio's mind was spinning like a hitmontop, what had just happened? "Darkrai…?" he said gently. "You don't have to do all this. We can go to Dialga a-and make all this right again! You don't have to suffer!"

"N-No…" Darkrai stammered, he started to claw at his face. Dark wisps leaked from him and joined the realm, clashing against the pink light. "Just… just end it. End me! This… this isn't right! I've done horrible things!"

"What…?" Raiden blinked. Was this the same Darkrai that just tried to kill him? The one who had ruined the lives of many? He took another step forward "Darkrai, I–"

Then a crack pierced the floor, ripping through the fight all around. Darkness flooded in from the split and swarmed the spirit completely like a thick, dark cloud. Raiden heard a strangled cry, and without thinking he rushed forward. "Darkrai!" he cried.

A shadow ball fired from the cloud and struck him, sending Rai sprawling to the ground once more. He glared at the hole made by the attack, and saw a single, glowing red eye staring back at him.

As Raiden got back to his feet, a pink light appeared beside him, glowing brighter until it faded, revealing Cresselia. "I'm sorry, Raiden," she said. "I haven't been totally honest with you. But I'll explain later, okay? Let's get you out of here."

"Huh?"

"Let me kill him! He deserves to die! An eternity in the Voidlands!" The spirit flew out of the cloud and straight for Raiden. The luxio shook his head and glared. There wasn't any time to focus on what else was happening. He had to stay alive! Rai focused and searched for any electricity to use, but all he could manage was a few, measly sparks. His eyes widened.

"That's not happening!" Cresselia declared. She flew in front of Raiden, and he watched as her back wing lit up with mystical energy. A shimmering, pink ball formed at the middle, not unlike the attack Ella had used and Cresselia fired it at Darkrai, hitting him point blank. The spirit snarled as he was pushed back, glaring at the lunar goddess.

Tendrils emerged from the tatters on his body, oozing inky darkness as they writhed and pointed towards Cresselia. One grazed the ground, and stone formed where it had touched. "You can't stop me! You're weak!"

"We'll see about that!Raiden, close your eyes!" The wings on her sides glowed with the same intensity as the top wing had.

He listened. The luxio squeezed his eyes shut, and he could feel the warmth of the light, and even with his eyes closed, he still saw the light become powerfully bright.

Rai heard a pained screech, and then nothing.

He awoke to the same surroundings as last time, in the same straw bed. Except this time, the house of Ella and Corsair was empty, aside from the golduck sleeping in the larger bed on the other side of the house and Cresselia, who was floating beside him.

"Are you alright?" she asked him gently, her eyes were soft, apologetic.

"What was that…?" he responded groggily.

Cresselia turned her gaze to the rest of the house, not meeting his eyes. "That was Darkrai," she answered.

Rai felt his own eyes narrow as he stared at her. "That wasn't just Darkrai. something happened to him!"

She sighed. "I know. He wasn't always like that… Darkrai used to be a gentle spirit, so I heard. But that was a long time ago. Then he became fixed with time, and along the way, he changed."

Rai glanced out the window to see the sky. The setting sun gave it a soft, orange glow. It was peaceful here, and it cruelly reminded him of the storm attacking his home.

"What happened, Cresselia?"

"I'm not sure, it was before my time. Perhaps Rayquaza might know…where are you going?"

Raiden got to his feet and had started walking towards the exit. "To find Rayquaza, because I want answers! If there's something I can do to help him, then I want to do it!"

That took Cresselia by surprise. He heard her gasp. "What happened to defeating him?" she asked. "Raiden, what did you see?"

He looked back, then glanced at Corsair. Rai thought about the veteran's story, and then looked back at his own. Darkrai was right about one thing, the golduck had gotten Ella back.

"I saw…that he's just like me. He's grieving his partner… like I was. Like I am. Something is making him attack everyone against his will, I think."

Her reply was immediate. "What if you're just seeing what he wanted you to see?" she questioned. "He could be feeding off your feelings intentionally to lower your guard."

Rai thought about it and frowned. The way Darkrai has responded after he was shocked said a different story. He had sounded as though he'd seen what Rai had as well, like it was a memory that had resurfaced. He remembered the pain and surprise in Darkrai's voice. His request afterwards. "I don't think so," Rai said. "At least, not fully. He's hurting…He just wants somebody to end the suffering."

Cresselia's expression turned sad as she lowered her head, Rai faced the exit once more. "I need to know if there's a way to help him. Sera would do the same if she was here."

He stepped out, still feeling rather strange in his new body. Rai was taller, and already he preferred it to being a shinx. His strength felt a little more real now. As he started to make his way back to Pokémon Square, where he assumed everyone was, Cresselia called out. "Raiden, wait!" The luxio paused as he waited for her to catch up, and he gave the goddess a quizzical glance. "I want to help you help Darkrai. If he can be saved or reasoned with… I want to help. I don't want to take any lives."

A smile formed on Rai's face. "Come on, I need to talk to the others. And… call me Rai, if you want. I don't mind."

Cresselia's eyes lit up, and she gave him a soft smile in return. "Thank you, Rai. You can call me…Mona. It was the name Ella suggested for me earlier, she said it was an old word for the moon in the human world. Strange, isn't it?"

Rai shook his head and repeated the name a few times to himself as they walked. "I think it's pretty. Nice to meet you, Mona."

Her whole body brightened a little as Mona giggled. "And nice to meet you too, Rai. I hope we can be friends."

"We already are," he said warmly.

He wondered if he could get everyone back home to adopt names as well. It felt personal, special even. But that would have to come later.

Rai had a world to save.

As Raiden and the newly named Mona made their way back to Pokémon Square, they were relieved to see that some citizens had returned to gawk at the meeting currently being held by the large crater in the centre. Shops nearby looked worse for wear, and a tree had fallen onto the dojo, based on the loud sobbing Rai had picked up on from a makuhita being comforted by Beatrice the persian. The kecleon brothers were offering supplies to anyone who looked like they needed them, and it made Rai wonder how those that remained of Treasure Town were doing. He caught a comforting smile from Mona, and he returned a small one of his own to the cresselia.

The meeting consisted of Ella, Magnum, Skuntank, Roger, and Rayquaza, who seemed to be glaring down at the group he was talking to. Things quieted down as he and Mona approached, Rayquaza's glare fell on Rai, and the luxio gulped.

"You," the sky god sneered.

"Me?" Raiden asked hesitantly.

He felt all eyes fall on him and he gulped. Did he do something wrong?

There was a tense silence as Rai felt himself staring at Rayquaza's piercing yellow eyes.

"…"

"…Thank you."

Rai blinked in surprise, and he glanced over at Ella. The sylveon seemed to be proud of someone– Rayquaza? He looked back and the glare on the god only seemed to deepen.

"Did you hear me?" he snapped, his voice loud and commanding.

"E-Er, yes! You're welcome…!" Rai stammered. Was he just thanked by a god? He felt light-headed.

"See, was that so hard?" Ella asked. "Everyone needs help once in a while, Zephyr."

Skuntank grunted. "Does he really have one of those hugh-mon-y names?"

"Human," Rayquaza corrected stiffly. "And you do not call me that! You refer to me as Rayquaza;, I hate that name."

"But we call you Zephyr all the time!" Ella protested.

Rayquaza's large form seemed to squirm as he looked away. "Yeah; well, you don't listen," he muttered.

Roger drifted closer to Rai, raising a flipper to rest it on his was uncomfortable, and almost like a large tongue that threatened to slick back his fur. Still, he appreciated the gesture all the same. It was a strange comfort. "Rai!" the whiscash exclaimed, a relieved smile on his face. "I'm glad you're alright...and congratulations on evolving!"

"Uh, yeah, good job and stuff," Skuntank added with a grumble.

"Thanks, you two," Rai smiled. "What's happening now?"

Ella answered, "We were waiting for you to wake up while Zephyr was recovering some of his strength— he said he wanted to talk about Darkrai."

Rai felt his body tense up at the name. This was it. This was the time for questions and answers before the next fight began. While he was eager for Rayquaza to put a stop to Kyogre and Groudon, he was also eager to learn more about Darkrai's past.

"Why do we need to talk about this maniac?" Skuntank snapped. "I'd rather rush back to save what's left of Treasure Town before the stupid fighting legends destroy the rest of that place!"

"He's got a point," Roger agreed. "We're in a rush, can we talk about this later?"

Rayquaza lifted his head and turned out towards the ocean. Rai noticed that he seemed to be focusing on something outside of his vision. No doubt the sky god was looking out towards the raging battle between Groudon and Kyogre. "Hm. Very well, you have a point. It is my duty to stop those two before they destroy the world," Rayquaza said. "Cresselia, I may need your help to do the same thing you did with me. I feel my presence alone won't be enough for them to stop."

Mona bowed her head. "Understood, and please, call me Mona. I'd like to adopt the name culture that Pokémon Square has."

"I see." His eyes narrowed. "What made you do that?"

"Watching the mortals here give themselves names has created a special identity for each of them," Mona replied, a soft smile forming. "If we joined them, it would be easier for us to communicate with mortals and get along with them. We shouldn't have to hide in our homes as gods to be revered; we're Pokémon, too!"

Rayquaza grunted. "…It's silly, adopting something humans do. We don't need anything like that."

"But look at this place! Everyone loves it. It's something that's theirs, no matter who they are!" Mona insisted.

Raiden heard Skuntank mutter. "I'm with the snake guy, this name thing is strange."

Rai looked around, once again noticing that all the citizens of Pokémon Square– children, parents, shop owners, and even explorers, they all had their own name, like the one given to him. He closed his eyes and focused, hearing and taking in all the names. Beatrice the persian ran a bank. Kent, Wayne, and West were the members of the famous Team A.C.T. There was Ella, Corsair and Magnum as well, and even as he listened, he heard Pokémon call each other something other than their species. Everyone called each other by a different name, and it worked. It was a perfect system where everyone knew everyone, regardless of who they were.

When this was all over, and Treasure Town rebuilt, what would happen then? Would things change? Would things continue as they were? Rai hadn't been able to spend much time going around the square, but even in his own experience, having a name…it just felt personal. Special, even.

…What if Treasure Town could follow suit?

Something wet and slick touched his back again, snapping Rai out of his thoughts. He jolted in fright and yelped. "Hey, Rai, are you alright?" Roger asked as he moved his flipper off Rai's back. "You zoned out for a moment there."

"Y-Yeah…I'm good, I was lost in thought," Raiden murmured. "When are we heading out?"

"We?!" Skuntank snapped. "What are we going to do about those two in the ocean? One of us can swim, but the rest of us? Nu-uh! And besides, they're giants! We'd get washed away or stomped on in an instant!"

Roger narrowed his eyes. "What, are you saying you're a coward?"

"No! I'm sayin' we're small, and they're freakin' huge!"

"So?" Ella stepped forward; her eyes narrowed at the poison type. "Does that mean you should sit back and wait for something to happen?"

Skuntank glared. "Of course I want to do something!" he snapped. "But I'm not about to kill myself trying. What'll happen to my friends if I– "

Rai watched as Skuntank grit his teeth and glared at the dirt pavement. The way Skuntank was acting now reminded him of…well, himself. Today jumping into a waterfall and diving into quicksand felt so trivial compared to the other stuff he'd been through. But, Skuntank…? He hadn't done any of that. A familiar nickname rang in his mind from what felt like so long ago…the word had hurt back then, but now…The luxio stepped towards his old 'rival,' sucking in a breath.

He heard Rayquaza growl with impatience.

"Rai…" Mona whispered as he passed her. "What are you doing…?"

"Skuntank, why are you being a chicken?"

Raiden heard Roger snort and Mona gasp, and he certainly felt all eyes on him.

Especially Skuntank's.

Raiden stared back at the deadly glare, but instead of seeing anger in Skuntank's eyes; all he saw was fear.

His voice was dark and cold. "What did you just call me…?"

"You heard me," Rai told him, keeping his voice level. "I'm calling you a chicken."

Skuntank shouted and immediately sprung forward, his fangs glowing with a dark energy. Raiden stood there and watched, not even flinching. He didn't move even when Ella's ribbons wrapped around Skuntank and pulled him away while he yelled, and Rai still didn't even flinch when Roger had moved in front of him, loyal as ever, ready to defend his friend and leader.

"C-Calm down!" cried Ella. "We don't have time for this!"

Rai heard Magnum say something similar among the buzzes of alarm from the magnezone.

"You don't know what it's like!" Skuntank screamed as he pushed against his fleshy restraints. "I haven't done any of this before! I'm not like any of you!"

"Oh, get a grip!" Roger hissed. "You're here now, so make yourself useful!"

Then Mona asked, "Skuntank, why did you even come along?"

Rai watched him seize up in response.

It was almost fascinating how quickly he responded to the goddess. He tensed, then growled. "It's none of your business!"

Rayquaza sneered. "What, were you trying to be the hero or something?"

"Yes! No! I mean– argh! Leave me alone! Let's just go fight the damn things already!"

Ella kept her ribbons wrapped around Skuntank as she stared at Rai. He felt himself gulp. "Raiden, apologise to Skuntank so we can move on!"

Roger moved out of the way, allowing Rai to face his 'rival' once again. He stepped forward and let out a sigh. He'd been about to say his piece when Rayquaza lurched forward, allowing Ella barely enough time to let Skuntank go before two large, scaly, green hands closed over Rai and Skuntank. Darkness closed in and Rai heard Skuntank shout next to him. "Ngh, Rayquaza, what are you doing?!" Rai cried.

"Speeding things up. Talk while I fly, it's time to go," he growled.

"Zephyr, what's going on?" Ella asked.

"Making them talk. Cresselia– er, Mona. Take the rest to the cliffs. If any stray blasts go towards the destroyed town, I want the rest of you to repel them. Plus…I have an uneasy feeling about this." His gaze turned out towards the sea with narrowed eyes. Rai could sense Zephyr's body tensing up. Skuntank refused to meet his eyes when Rai tried to glance at him.

"Understood," Rai heard Mona say softly. "I'll support you however I can.

"You can count on us, Rayquaza!" Roger said.

"Let us go, you crazy snake!" Skuntank demanded, stomping a paw against his cage.

There wasn't even a warning. Suddenly everything felt weightless as Zephyr took to the skies, Rai heard both Skuntank and himself cry out while they quickly ascended. Rai's ears began to feel funny, and going by Skuntank's irritated grunts, his were too. "Stupid snake, stupid Darkrai, stupid everything! If I knew things were going to be this crazy, I'd have backed out before we even left!"

Rayquaza's flight turned into something a little more leisurely, and suddenly Rai felt a little better. The pinpricks of light that snuck past the sky god's claws allowed Rai to see the ever-present glare on Skuntank's face.

"So?" he spat. "Aren't you supposed to apologise or something?"

Rai sighed. "I'm sorry you got dragged into this mess. This was just something I wanted to fix alone, but clearly, it's beyond just my power."

"Yeah, no kidding."

Bursts of wind also snuck past Rayquaza's claws, as Rai felt gusts making the starts of his mane even messier. He hadn't even thought about grooming himself, his mind had only been on what was happening in front of him. He could only imagine what kind of mess he was.

"Remember back in the day, when you called me Chicken?"

Skuntank grunted. "What? You wanted some petty revenge or something? I thought we were past that."

"We are, I just remember being really scared back then, and how terrifying the whole journey to save Temporal Tower was. I had Sera by my side to help me gain courage, but… I realised that you don't have anyone like that here. You must be more terrified than I was, and… I guess I wanted to help."

"How does calling me a coward help?"

"When I was scared, I had Sera to talk to about it, and she'd always know the right thing to say," Rai sighed. "I'm not as good at this as she is… but I want to help you through it."

Skuntank laughed. He laughed until he wheezed from the shorter air, and all that time, Rai stood and watched. Only the howling wind was heard between them as the occupants of Rayquaza's hands stared at each other. Then the former let out a defeated sigh.

"I came because I wanted to protect my friends, Zubat and Koffing," he confessed reluctantly. "They're helping Diglett and Dugtrio, going out to other places to gather food and stuff. I wanted to be helpful too, I couldn't just watch them volunteer and leave me behind. This was better than pretending to be muscle at the guild. I… wanted to give them a home to come back to.

"So, I figured if you and Vulpix could save the world, why couldn't I? I thought I could just tag along and help save the day, but it's a lot more complicated than that…"

"Her name is Seraphina," Rai replied. "And… yeah, saving the world is hard. Just because I don't show it doesn't mean I'm not scared. I'm terrified, especially after seeing everything Darkrai is capable of. I can't believe he destroyed Treasure Town, and so many lost their lives…"

"And that's why you want to stop him, right?" Skuntank asked, tilting his head a little.

"Yeah. Sera gave her life to save this planet… and I don't want to see that go to waste. Not anymore."

Skuntank grunted in acknowledgement. Rai supposed he wasn't used to this kind of openness in a conversation, and having that courage alone filled him with respect for the poison type. "So, about that name thing of yours… Did she give it to you?"

Rai swallowed a lump that formed in his throat but didn't feel that sickening pit in his gut that he usually got when thinking about her. It… really had been months since Seraphina had to leave him, months since he'd been alone. Did it not feel as awful anymore? "Yeah, when we first met, I asked for one on impulse. I don't know why, but having a name just felt right. It felt… special, like Mona said. You get it?"

"I think so. That means you're Raiden, right?"

"That's right."

Skuntank shifted closer with a sigh. "Then… Raiden. I'm… sorry for your loss. Vulp–I mean, Serafeena. She was strong, and you both showed me there was more to life than thievery and trickery. I owe you both for that, so thanks."

A boom of thunder preceded a flash that cut across the sky, and suddenly Rai could feel the humidity making his fur tingle and sweat. Or maybe it had been like that for a while, and Rai just hadn't noticed it. He peered through a space between Rayquaza's hands, there was the warmth of a fierce sun, but not much sunlight could pierce the dark clouds as rain poured heavily. He heard two primal roars, ones that sounded very familiar to him at this point. Kyogre and Groudon were still fighting.

The luxio turned back. "Thank you, Skuntank. It means a lot to hear that from you."

"Don't mention it. Now, can we actually do something about those guys messing with our home?"

"Finally!" Rayquaza snapped, then his voice dropped into something calmer. "I was about to say, we're here. They haven't noticed me yet…and… I'm glad you could work it out."

"Wha–Rayquaza, were you listening in?!" Rai cried.

The serpent's hands shifted so Rai and Skuntank could see one of his eyes peering in.

"I had to hold you two close in case I dropped you guys, what do you want me to do, go deaf?"

Skuntank snorted. "That'd be a start," he said. "So, what's the plan?"

Rai heard Rayquaza's smirk. "Hah, you're about to see why Ella calls me Zephyr! Apparently, it's a name related to some mythical god in her own home, and she thought it matched with my powers. Don't blame me if you fall and drown."

"I thought you didn't like that name," Skuntank pointed out.

Rayquaza growled. "Don't toy with me, or I'll throw you." Rai noted that Rayquaza didn't respond to the accusation, but he decided not to voice it– he didn't want to be thrown into the raging sea, after all. Then, the sky god's voice changed into something softer. "Now, I'm going to hand you both over to Mona. She'll take you to the cliff with the others, where you'll be needed to fend off attacks in case."

"What?!" Rai cried, "But I want to help fight!"

"Don't be a fool!" Rayquaza snarled as his eyes narrowed. "You got lucky fighting me. Against those two rampaging in the sea? You won't have a chance."

"He's right, Raiden," Skuntank agreed. "Let's just do what he said– there's no way we could get close to those things like this!"

Rai glanced down, getting the briefest glimpses of red and blue flashes far below. Just how high up were they? It didn't matter. When Rai first saw the two gods fighting to no end, all he wanted to do was stop them. Everything in him screamed that this wasn't right, they weren't meant to fight each other! Kyogre and Groudon needed to be freed. Rai wanted them to be themselves again.

"I fought Dialga, I stood up to Darkrai, and I fought you!" Rai glared at Rayquaza's eye. "When I saw Darkrai in my dream, he was struggling. He wanted all of this to stop before something else took over!"

Everything went still. Rayquaza closed his eyes in thought, then gasped as he stared at the two in his hands once again. "Are you sure?" he asked, his voice urgent. "Please, you have to confirm this."

"Uh…what's going on?" Skuntank asked hesitantly.

Rai quickly recounted his most recent encounter with Darkrai. While he did, he thought about it once again. He'd been given a glimpse of a lucario, and a promise… what did it all mean? What had happened to Darkrai's friend?

"…I was afraid of this…" Rayquaza mumbled, "Thank you, Raiden. This whole thing makes a lot more sense now."

"Zephyr, what happened to Darkrai?" Rai pressed. "I want to know- I want to help him!"

Skuntank narrowed his eyes. "If something sketchy is going on, I think we deserve to know."

"Later," he growled. "For now, I want both of you on top of my head. Don't be afraid to dig your claws in to hold on."

"Wait, we're staying?!" Skuntank cried.

"Yes. Is that not what you both want?"

"Uhh… I guess. Riding on a Legendary sounds pretty cool."

"This is not a joyride! Quickly now and prepare your best moves."

Before Rai could add anything, their cage broke apart as Rayquaza's hands parted and lifted, quickly rising to meet his lowered head. It had barely been moments and Rai already felt soaked to the bone from the torrential rain. Without prompting, Rai took a deep breath and jumped. He sprung onto the serpent's neck and crawled closer to his head. After a moment, a heaving Skuntank joined him.

"Phew! Man, th-that was exhausting!" Skuntank wheezed as he finished crawling up. "This is hard work!"

"And we haven't even started yet," Rai told him with a grin. "Are you ready?"

"No!"

"Hold on tight!" Rayquaza said, and then he began the descent.

"W-Wait! Oh SHI–!"

Raiden focused as he dug his claws into Rayquaza's scales, hoping that Skuntank would do the same. He had to force his eyes shut as the harsh, hot winds and rain whipped against his face. Rai heard Skuntank scream beside him, making his ears press against his head. The cry was enough to make his head hurt, unless that was the air pressure.

In the middle of the flight, Rayquaza glowed in the familiar light he was bathed in not long ago. Under his paws, Rai could feel the god getting stronger, and bigger, and a draconic wind surged around them. This time however, these winds didn't hurt thanks to Zephyr being in control now. The glow Rai saw through his eyelids faded, and he knew Rayquaza had mega evolved once again.

As they approached, Rai could hear the roars and the clash once more. Zephyr barely had a chance to give a warning as he suddenly darted to the side, and Rai opened his eyes in time to see a green beam firing past them and piercing the clouds above. "Here we go! Strike when you can!"

"I think I'm gonna be sick!" Skuntank whined.

Rai steeled himself and crawled forward. He wrapped his front legs over Rayquaza's head crest, his fur crackling with electricity. Groudon glared up at them with fierce blue eyes as he roared, causing lava to erupt from the seabed and solidify, giving it more ground to stand on. Even Kyogre had the same, chilling blue eyes, just like Zephyr had.

They really were under Darkrai's control.

He had the smallest moment to see Sharpedo Cliff in the distance, and if he squinted, Rai could make out Mona's glow and the silhouettes of others.

Kyogre had just swerved around Groudon to avoid the beam from before, and now saw the new opponents before it. Rai gulped as the ocean behemoth flapped its fins, pushing forward in a burst of speed. Several blue rings appeared around Kyogre, each unleashing torrents of water towards them.

"Ah, look out!" Skuntank cried.

"You fool, do you know who I am?" Zephyr snapped. He rolled and swerved by each torrent, and Rai had no choice but to hold on as tightly as possible. Skuntank shouted something that Rai missed over the winds, for he was too busy focusing. When they got close, Rai focused and charged his fur with electricity, causing a blue bolt to strike Kyogre. It screeched in pain, and Rai felt a little surge of pride.

Skuntank crawled over to join Rai at the top of Zephyr's head. A beam of spiralling darkness left an opening in his tail, also landing a direct hit. "Hah! Did you see? I did that!"

Zephyr opened his jaw and fired a dragon pulse, which also struck Kyogre as he passed it. Which left him open to a barrage of ethereal rocks from Groudon. Rai and Skuntank ducked as a rock from the ancient power sailed over their heads, and Zephyr grunted in pain.

"A-Are you okay?" Rai asked.

"Of course I am! It's going to take more than a few silly rocks to stop me!"

Zephyr navigated the air like there was no harsh rain pelting his body, or any heat from the hidden sun to exhaust him. It almost didn't even feel like it was approaching nighttime with how everything was. Instead of darting straight down for an attack, Zephyr seemed to take a more careful approach, as if he was considering the passengers on his head.

With a roar from Kyogre and a flap of its fins, a large wave picked up from the ocean. At the same time, Groudon moved forward, rock and lava forming under its feet with each step. It stomped the ground it made beneath its feet, causing more to form ahead of it at a rapid rate. Once it neared the wave, the ground erupted into molten lava and rock and a fissure burst from the center, causing the water to spray everywhere and while it made Groudon wince, it appeared to have hurt a lot less than it was going to.

While Groudon had been dealing with the wave, Kyogre had taken this time to once again approach Zephyr and his passengers, charging an ice beam in its own maw. Skuntank countered with a flamethrower from his tail, which was quickly being overpowered.

"Ngh, guys, do something!" Skuntank snarled.

He didn't need to be told twice. Rai started to charge electricity in his fur, feeling the crackles of energy surge through his body. At the same time, Zephyr charged a ball of fighting energy in his maw, then fired just as blue electricity struck Kyogre.

Kyogre's pained roar pierced the air, making Rai and Skuntank wince. But the battle didn't even allow for them to recover, because Zephyr weaved out of the way of a solarbeam and slithered through the air towards Groudon. Rai quickly charged a thunderbolt, while Skuntank's tail opened and spat out a sludge bomb as they passed the land god. Raiden heard a growl before Zephyr ascended.

"Hold on again!" Zephyr called.

Before either of them could question it, Zephyr's body dipped into a rapid spin, picking up wind as he went. Rai held on to the Rayquaza as soon as he felt the dip, and since he could still hear Skuntank's screams, he could assume that he was holding on as well. All Rai could see was a blur, but while Zephyr spun, he could feel the god's power building. Quickly.

Was he planning to end this soon?

When the spinning stopped, ethereal rocks flew over them, striking Kyogre's underside as it focused on firing another ice beam at Zephyr and his companions. With no time to evade, the beam struck Zephyr directly.

He roared and jolted, suddenly throwing his passengers. Rai had barely managed to hang on and dug his claws into a ridge in Zephyr's scales.

Skuntank had not been so lucky.

Before he could say anything, Skuntank was wrenched from his position on Rayquaza's head. Rai barely had time to snap his head in the former crook's direction before he had plummeted out of sight. Raiden's heart leapt into his throat as he watched his friend quickly disappear

"SKUNTAAANK!" Rai screamed over the wind and rain, like it would bring him back.

Why did this all have to happen? Why did Darkrai have to cause all this destruction? Why did it all come back to him?

Why…

Zephyr swore.

"This is why I didn't want you mortals joining me, because stuff like this happens!" he yelled after driving Kyogre back with a powerful dragon pulse. "Stay on my head and pray your friend can hold his breath. We cannot help him while they rage!"

Zephyr's words were enough to drag Rai out of his thoughts and deafen the incredibly loud pounding in his ears. As Rai held onto Zephyr as he took deep breaths. The storm had made his eyes sting too much, he couldn't even tell what was making him cry.

Darkrai had taken far too much from him.

He wasn't going to let him take Skuntank too—he had to stop these gods from rampaging!

Rai wasn't going to let Skuntank die. He was going to make Kyogre come to its senses so it could save Skuntank.

"What are we going to do?" Raiden called over the winds, unsure if Zephyr could hear. "Don't we need Mona to wake them up?!"

"We do, but we need to weaken them enough for Mona to step in. Just like before!" Zephyr replied. "At least… I hope it works like that."

Rai didn't have a chance to retort. Streams of flames shot towards them, and Rai's fur crackled with electricity as he charged a thunderbolt. The two elements combined and clashed, resulting in a loud explosion. He didn't have time to shake the ringing from his ears.

The weather was just as chaotic as the battle. Despite feeling like it should be nighttime, he could still feel the warmth of the afternoon sun and the torrential downpour that seemed to have no end.

Zephyr swerved, Rai desperately clung to his head. Attacks were fired from both sides in what felt like an almost equal trade of power. A small part of Rai felt that since he'd taken on the likes of Dialga and Dusknoir, anything was possible.

He could save the world- again.

"That's enough!" cried Mona.

With a flash of pink, the glow he'd seen from afar was suddenly much much closer. The cresselia stared Kyogre and Groudon down with determined eyes. She radiated a strange, bright aura and Raiden was certain that if he was closer he'd be able to feel its warmth, too.

"Do it now!" Zephyr barked.

Kyogre and Groudon roared in protest, but Mona yelled back and expelled the aura. It rippled and burst out in a bright, pink wave. He heard Zephyr hiss.

The technique struck the raging gods, knocking Kyogre into the violent ocean as it screeched, creating a giant splash. Groudon fell backwards, landing on the ground he'd made. It rippled and cracked, and with a piercing SNAP, the fault lines shot right for Sharpedo Cliff.

"N-No!" Rai tried to scream, feeling his throat ache in protest from how raw it felt.

Raiden watched as the cliff face started to collapse, rocks falling bit by bit into the ocean below. He watched his home, his memories, and his heart all sink into the waves… and anyone who might have been standing up there, preparing to fend off stray attacks. All of it gone in one go.

Roger, Magnum, Ella… and Skuntank. They'd all fallen into the ocean. Kyogre's domain. That… that wasn't it for them all, right? Surely Raiden hadn't just lost so many friends?

"Roger sensed that something bad was going to happen," Mona explained hurriedly once she flew over to them. "Before I left, he said that they should go while he searched for Skuntank… I hope they got out safely…"

Raiden shook his head. "They have to be fine," he insisted. "They need to be!"

They had to be. They couldn't be anything but fine. Raiden refused the idea that they weren't okay.

Zephyr exhaled sharply through his nostrils. "Let's not get emotional, Raiden," he warned. "Let us find their bodies and confirm before you mourn them."

"Rayquaza!" Mona chided. "Don't be so crass! I'm sure Raiden's feeling very upset and stressed right now!"

Inhale. Exhale. Raiden took his breaths slowly. He needed to focus. "Zephyr's right, I can't get worked up now. I should check, first."

Raiden saw the concern in Mona's eyes as she watched him, but instead of protesting, she frowned and nodded. "Right… I suppose he's right. But don't bury those feelings, okay?"

The waters below were starting to calm, turning from surging waves to tempered ones. Rai felt himself focus, and he sighed.

"You're lucky. I'll let you get away with calling me Zephyr, mortal, just this once," grumbled Zephyr. "You're in a bad state, and I pity you."

Raiden squinted at that. "Er… thanks?" he said. Legendary Pokémon were far stranger up close.

"Come on," ushered Mona. "Let's get to the beach and see if everyone made it." As she turned to fly towards the beach, Zephyr followed. Raiden could feel the scales underneath him coil and shift as his ride slithered idly through the air. Zephyr needed a break. That was when Rai felt his own tiredness settle in, and he felt his own body relax.

He had to take any chance he could get to rest.

The flight over had been quiet and cold. With Groudon's sunlight fading to give way to the light of the full moon, and the cold of the night. The breeze ruffled Raiden's scruffy mane, making him shudder each time it cut through his fur. The last few hours… fighting three legendary Pokémon back-to-back was, in short, exhausting. Even after that moment of rest, Rai didn't feel any less tired than before.

As the shore of the beach got closer, Rai couldn't help but think about Darkrai. What was he doing right now? Why hadn't he shown up yet? Despite being a threat, Rai realised that Darkrai had yet to actually show himself in the waking world. Was there a bigger plan underfoot? Was it too late to stop him?

He didn't have the answer to any of these questions. When Zephyr arrived at Treasure Town's beach with Mona in tow, Rai felt his heart soar with relief and his face stretched into the biggest of smiles.

They were all fine.

Ella and Magnum weren't looking much worse than they did after fighting Zephyr. The sylveon's fur was ruffled and her ribbons were anxiously fidgeting together while the magnezone buzzed with concern.

Roger looked exhausted, but by his side was a severely drenched Skuntank, who was coughing and trembling, but otherwise fine.

A gentle fire was going, but it didn't look like it was going to help Skuntank get dry anytime soon.

"See? They're fine! Oh my goodness, you're all okay!" Mona said with relief. "I was worried that…" she trailed off, a wave of calm washing over her.

Skuntank glanced at her and he smiled. "Psh, y-you were worried about good ol' me?" he said while shaking. "S-Some water isn't going to keep me down!"

"You were screaming when I found you," mumbled Roger.

"Shut it," Skuntank murmured back.

"Not only are they fine, I see Skuntank hasn't changed at all," snorted Zephyr. "Come on Luxio, go say hi."

A hand moved high enough for Rai to jump down into, then the rayquaza lowered it to the ground, letting Rai feel sand underneath his paws once again.

It almost felt strange being back on solid ground. Well, mostly solid ground. The uneven sand crunched under his paws, and Rai welcomed it. The grains swallowed his front paws, and he sighed.

Nothing else mattered to Raiden at that moment. As he looked at the weary eyes of all his companions, he was just relieved that they were all okay.

"Rai…" Roger said, "I'm glad you're-"

His words were interrupted by Skuntank bursting into laughter. When all eyes fell on him, he raised a claw to wipe away a tear. "S-Sorry! I just can't get over how silly Raiden looks with his fur sticking up everywhere! All that air travel did nothing good for your fur!"

At those words, Ella stared at Raiden then snorted. Mona was giggling, and even Roger was trying not to crack a smile. Rai had no idea how he looked, but he could only imagine what a mess it probably was.

Rai was feeling quite self conscious now. "Look- I haven't had a spare moment to clean up, okay? A lot of stuff has been happening!"

"Hm, while all of you relax for a moment, I'm going to check on my counterparts." Zephyr flew back towards the ocean, slithering through the air as he went.

"Sorry," Skuntank said again. "Once I saw I just couldn't stop thinking about how silly you look… ah well. I'm just glad I'm alive, honestly. I owe Roger my life."

The whiscash paused at that. "Did you just… use my name?" he asked in amazement.

"Don't make a big deal of it. I'm… learning," Skuntank mumbled. "I'm trying this thing where I start using everyone's names and treating them like my friends."

"Is that because we are?" Ella asked with a sly smile.

"Guess so," Skuntank grunted. He looked away.

Mona smiled. "I think that's great, Skuntank! So do we get to help you choose a name yet?"

"One thing at a time!" he said with a scoff. "I'll… look into it."

"That's the spirit!" Ella cheered, wriggling her ribbons, while Magnum added some excited beeps.

Skuntank's cheeks almost seemed to redden. "And that's only because when people talk about this moment, I want them to know which Skuntank helped save the world."

Rai smirked at him. "Sure, and I'll be the one spreading the word. You did good… friend."

Skuntank's eyes met his, and Rai saw the faintest of embarrassed smiles. "Ah, yeah… back at you… erm, friend."

Ella twirled in the sand and cheered. "Oh, I just love it when new friendships are made! It just fills me with so much excitement!"

"Did you make a lot before fighting Zephyr yourself back in the day?" asked Roger.

"I did! A lot of us banded together to beat some sense into him!" she said with a smile, then a soft sigh escaped her. "I love seeing what Pokémon in this world are capable of! I don't remember much of the human world… but I know we certainly weren't capable of saving the world like this. I guess things were also a little different there, too…"

"Do you remember what it was like?" Raiden asked.

"I'll show you the human world one day, okay? I promise!"

That Lucario… she'd told Darkrai she'd take him there. Something about that memory made his head ache. Was… that something he was after? How did he even go after such a place?

"-ike I said, I don't remember much," answered Ella, as Rai snapped from his thoughts. "Humans don't have abilities like we do, which means things are generally less chaotic, but also… we have our own conflicts, I think. We called them wars. They were violent and terrifying… nothing like Pokémon battles."

"That does sound scary," Mona murmured with a frown.

"Yeah, but on the other hand, humans were capable of so many things! We could build much more advanced stuff and instead of exploring and dungeons, there were just towns and bigger towns called cities everywhere!"

"Would you ever want to go back?" Rai asked.

Before Ella could answer, a large shadow rose over him. For a moment, Rai held his breath, then looked up to see the light of the fire illuminating Zephyr's emerald green scales.

"Kyogre and Groudon will be fine… they pass on their thanks. They are returning to their homes to rest," he explained to the relief of everyone. "I'll check on them in due time… but I think they'll be safe, now."

"That's good," said Roger with a relieved smile. "I'm glad they're doing okay!"

Zephyr nodded and frowned down at Mona. "How much do you know about the Tale of Darkrai?"

"Ohh… not much," she answered. "The other legendaries wouldn't speak of it!"

"Hm, very well. I will have to tell you all the whole story then."

"The story?" questioned Skuntank. "There's a whole damn story to this guy?"

"Yes. It is a guarded story… for we weren't sure if he'd ever return or not. But now that he has…"

"So you guys knew something like this would happen, and didn't act sooner?" Skuntank scowled. "Great, so you made it our problem…"

Zephyr glared, then sighed. "Fine. I guess I had that one coming… All of this began with Lucario, the first human-turned Pokémon to ever arrive in this world."

Ella tilted her head slightly in thought. "Before Gengar Shen?" she asked.

"Much much before," said Zephyr. "In fact…"

It was the day after a particularly vicious storm in Trove Bay, a small village near a beautiful beach and a strange, jagged cliff overlooking the sea.

Darkrai floated down to the sandy beach, keeping to the outlined path that took him down there. His tendrils gently brushed against the sand underneath him. It was coarse and rough, and he wasn't a fan.

But there had been a reason he'd come down here. Something had been calling him here. Since the storm, Darkrai had felt a strange presence, and it was getting hard to ignore it. Normally Pokémon didn't come down here, because the tide of the ocean could get unexpectedly rough. Nobody really knew when someone would get washed away, and so everyone was warned to keep their distance from the beaches.

Except Darkrai wasn't like other Pokémon, he felt. He was different in this peaceful little village. The ocean did not scare him.

So when he arrived at the beach, he narrowed his eyes and focused. There was something here. Something…

A riolu, unconscious by the water. She was covered in flecks of wet sand, and a clump of seaweed had wrapped itself around her ear. Was she someone from the village who had gone missing?

No… Darkrai didn't remember any riolu like this.

He reached out with a hand, shaking her lightly.

"Hello…?" he asked, his voice timid and gentle. "Are you alright?"

Slowly she woke up, and both of them jumped in surprise, yelling.

"Aah, you're alive!" yelped Darkrai from behind a rock.

"Of course I am! What the heck are you?!" demanded Riolu. "Who are you?! Where am I?!"

She had woken up in the world of Pokémon, but she had no idea what they were. To her, they were strange creatures she'd never encountered, read, or heard about…

"I'm Darkrai," he said nervously once he'd explained where she was. By this time he'd emerged from his hiding spot. "I'm kind of rare around here, and not too many like me because I keep accidentally giving people bad dreams…"

"Okay… but what am I?" she asked.

"You're a Riolu," Darkrai said. "A Pokémon who can look into auras and stuff… Should we get you into the village? I don't know if you're hurt or anything…"

"That… sounds cool, but I'm not supposed to be a Riolu, I'm a Human! A Human named Amy!"

"Ae…me? That sounds weird," stated Darkrai. "What's a hooman?"

"W-Well, Darkrai sounds weird!" she protested. "And it's 'human!' Hugh-man! Got it?"

"Heughman…"

Amy sighed, then smiled a little. "Close enough, I'm sure you'll get it right one day…"

When Darkrai finished helping Amy settle into Trove Bay, he showed her around the small bits of the village. Nobody had really heard of humans before besides a small handful of myths and folktales. Amy told anyone who listened all about this world she came from. A world filled with creatures called animals, who were absolutely nothing like Pokémon. Humans lived with those creatures in different kinds of farms. While there had been some strange similarities, Amy's home had sounded like no other.

Darkrai had become enticed by this, while others quickly thought Amy to be strange. In no time she'd learned and adapted to the ways of Pokémon, but her stories continued to separate her from everyone else.

She didn't seem to mind. Despite this, she was a friend to all.

She worked in the berry fields each day, dawn to dusk. Ploughing fields, watering plants, gently picking berries, and even cooking meals to share with the village. On the days she was given a break, Darkrai would take her somewhere special.

This place was on the top of the strange, jagged cliff not far from the village. The two of them would sit together at the top, and stare out into the vast ocean ahead of them.

"Tell me about your family again," Darkrai said. "I want to learn all I can about them…"

"Why is that?" Amy asked with a gentle smile. "I think I've told you all I can… I'm pretty sure I told you about the story where my brother dropped his toy in the toi-"

"Yes, you did tell me about that one," Darkrai nodded, grimacing. "I feel bad for him! Must have been gross!"

"Heh, yeah, it was. What exactly did you want to know?"

"...Do you miss them?"

Amy's expression turned forlorn. "Yeah… I do," she answered slowly, "Sometimes I wonder if I could seek out Palkia like in those legends, and ask them to take me back home, but then… I decide I don't want to."

"Huh?! Why not?!" he cried. Every time he saw that sad expression… he didn't like it. Darkrai wanted to do anything he could to make it go away.

She turned and gave him a small smile. "Because I like it here! I've learned all of these cool things, I've made so many new friends and really helped a lot of people here! And… I have you."

"M-Me?" he stammered. "But my bad dreams…"

"They haven't affected me from day one! Trust me Darkrai, I'm fine. I've never felt scared around you!"

"You haven't?" he asked with hopeful eyes.

"I promise," Amy said firmly, though her eyes carried that same gentle light he'd grown to love.

Darkrai enveloped Amy in a tight hug, twirling as he did.

"H-Hey, Darkrai! Put me down!" she giggled. She sounded different. Felt different. Did she get taller…?

So Darkrai put her down, but in the riolu's place was a lucario. She still had those kind eyes.

"Amy!" he gasped with excitement. "You've evolved into Lucario! I can't believe it!"

"I can!" she said with a big smile. "Didn't you say they only evolve when they feel really close to someone?"

Darkrai paused, then nodded, smiling.

"Yeah… I did. But… are you really sure you don't want to go back? I mean… I can help you get there. We can look for Palkia together!"

Her smile was warm. "Sure. When we find Palkia and find a way there, I'll show you around the human world, and then we'll come back here, okay? I promise."

That promise… it sat firmly in Darkrai's heart. He wanted more than nothing to see the world his best friend had come from. If she could settle into his just fine… surely he could do the same? He wanted to see that sad smile disappear.

That was his promise.

When Amy had evolved, things started changing. Pokémon were reported turning to stone after huge fights broke out. Word took time to spread, but even from the nearest settlement away from Trove Bay, things were looking dire.

Nobody knew what the cause was, but Amy had put her paw up to investigate. There weren't many leads, and Darkrai knew he couldn't let her go by herself. While she'd become a skilled fighter, something told him that he shouldn't let this human do things by herself.

"I'll come with you," he insisted. "I won't let you go alone, and… I can fight, too."

Amy smiled sweetly. "I know I can't stop you, so… yeah. I'd love to have you along. Where were the last signs of stoning?"

"A little place north of here. It's a few days away, but hopefully we can see something before anything bad happens here…"

"Got it. Then let's head out, I want to see what's happening to our world…"

The next few days of travel consisted of the duo following word of mouth from various settlements. Each day they'd follow the most recent sighting of Pokémon turning to stone, and everytime they asked about it, Pokémon described the day itself as 'feeling terrible' even before anyone had been frozen.

What they'd been able to put together is that shortly after Pokémon were frozen, the bad feeling they'd all had that day had vanished, and they could continue on as normal. Except for the part where everyone was panicking about being next.

Amy was determined to save everyone.

"Why?" Darkrai asked her one morning, while they travelled across a grassy field.

"Because I live here, silly! And so do you and all my friends!" was her reply.

That made Darkrai feel warm.

Then when the sun was setting and Amy was thinking they'd have to camp out once again, everything changed.

The bad feeling had sunken into their hearts, and suddenly they were on alert. This dread. The emptiness. The numbness. Having the feeling that nothing could turn their day around… this was the very feeling that Pokémon had been describing.

"Alright," Amy said, staying calm. "No arguing, let's take this slowly and search the area. It's just us out here, so maybe we can find something!"

"On it!" Darkrai nodded and floated away, beginning his search. While Amy searched and climbed trees within the vicinity, Darkrai checked the ground. Shrubbery, rocks, even the shadows, just in case.

He had to find this thing, whatever or whoever it was. Darkrai wanted nothing more than to stop all the Pokémon from turning to stone, because it meant he could keep Amy safe. It meant he could help her get home and…

A patch of nearby grass rustled, wrestling Darkrai from his thoughts.

"Who's there?!" Darkrai called, looking for the culprit.

The head of a pichu emerged from the bush, blinking. But immediately something was wrong. This pichu was completely grey, with its black stripes looking even darker.

And those eyes.

As Darkrai stared back at this pichu, he felt strangely drawn to the red light in its irises, and the likewise, almost throbbing red light where its heart would be. Despite looking and feeling like a Pokémon, something in Darkrai screamed that this was far from anything he'd ever seen before.

"Uwaaah!" Darkrai yelped, zipping backwards some distance from the creature.

"S-Scary!" wailed the pichu, dipping back into the grass.

"Darkrai?!" Amy called, jumping from the tree she'd been looking in and darting over. "I just felt its aura- it was hiding from me before, are you okay?"

"Y-Yeah!" he said, "I just… it's a pichu, but what is it?"

"It hid from you… I think you scared it. Maybe it's friendly?"

"Amy…" warned Darkrai. "Be careful."

She smiled at him. "Don't worry, it's as scared of us as you are of it… surely it didn't mean to hurt anybody…?"

The lucario slowly approached, taking careful steps through the grass. "Hello," she called softly. "I won't hurt you, my name's Amy. Don't be scared, okay? What's your name, little guy?"

"Name…?" it asked. Its voice sounded like it echoed in their minds but was spoken aloud at the same time. It sounded young. "I don't know what… that is."

Amy parted the grass again to look down at the pichu. Even though she had to admit it was strange, she didn't let that deter her. "A name is what you call yourself. I'm Amy, and my friend you met is Darkrai. Do you call yourself anything?"

It looked confused. "Anything… Anything?"

"Hmm… Darkrai, this just feels like a little kid. This can't be what's causing everything, right?"

"Little kid… is that what I am?"

Darkrai frowned. "Are we sure it's not pretending?"

"It can't be! Look at this little guy!" Amy grinned and scooped up the pichu into her arms. It wriggled and a splotch of white colour wriggled across its body for a moment.

"F-Feels weird! Let go!" it said, and Amy let it jump from her arms and back onto the ground.

Darkrai and Amy exchanged glances.

"I… want to take him back home," said Amy.

"Are you sure that's a good idea?" asked Darkrai. "If this thing is responsible for the stone incidents, it's dangerous! Especially if it can't control this power!"

"Then I'll teach it just that," Amy replied, looking determined. "You taught me, so maybe I can help him!"

"Him…? Amy? Amy isn't scary."

She grinned. "Of course I'm not! And I decided on a name for you too- Simon!"

"Your… little brother?" questioned Darkrai. "Why?"

"I like the name," she answered, and Amy knelt down to meet the creature's level. "And he's cute and little. How about it? Should your name be Simon?"

It smiled a little. "Simon? Simon!"

Amy giggled. "Then it's settled! Your new name is Simon!"

. . .

Days bled into weeks, and Amy nurtured 'Simon' as if he was her own. Simon initially rejected all of Amy's affection, but then over time he started to enjoy the ripples of white across his body whenever she hugged him. Before they seemed to hurt. Darkrai had initially been quite wary of this creature, but even he was warming up to it.

One night he had a dream. Arceus had appeared before him to say that the pichu was a creature named Dark Matter, and that Amy needed to destroy it, not keep it.

But Darkrai refused. Amy was going to raise it, and he decided he'd be there with her every step of the way.

Arceus warned him that this would not end well.

Darkrai told him to suck it.

Pokémon stopped turning into stone. There weren't any future incidents…

Until one day…

"Hey, watch it!" Ursaring growled. He'd been storming down the main street of Trove Bay, and seemed to be in a rush when he'd bumped into a swellow.

"No way, I was walking here first!" snapped Swellow. "Why're you in such a rush, huh? You're going to hurt someone!"

The quarrel continued, and Amy had been ready to break it up, but Simon beat her to it.

"S-Stop it! You're both scary and bad!" he wailed.

As soon as the last word left his mouth, the two bickering Pokémon had slowly turned to stone.

Everything in the square stopped, then panic broke loose. Everyone was running and screaming, and some had turned to Amy and Simon.

Amy scooped up Simon before anyone could retaliate, and ran home as fast as she could. Amy didn't know what had happened, but she was determined to keep him safe. To her, it had been an honest accident.

"Bad…" whimpered Simon. "I felt scared. Why did they have to feel bad?"

"Well, um, Pokémon just fight sometimes, Simon. That doesn't mean you turn them to stone," Amy said, frowning. "Everyone's in a panic… and surely they'll snap out of it and march over soon…"

"It's not safe," Darkrai said with a sigh. "They're afraid, so they won't want him here. Especially because we don't know how to undo the petrifications yet…"

There'd been nothing about it in his research, not one bit. There had been simply no records of a creature named Dark Matter, and he hadn't had any more dreams…

"Did I do something bad? Sorry sorry, I didn't mean to…"

Amy turned to him and pulled him into a hug. Those speckles of light darted across Simon's body and he wriggled. "I know you didn't, Simon," she said gently. "We'll figure it out, okay?"

"Okay…"

"Amy, what are you going to do?" asked Darkrai timidly. "Are you going to run?"

"Well they're not going to listen if I explain things to them so… yeah, I'm going to run and take Simon with me."

Darkrai tensed. "What if… he's meant to be destroyed?"

Amy's eyes narrowed. "Sorry? What happened to helping Simon?"

"Well it's just… what if he can't be helped? Arceus said-"

"I don't care what Arceus said!" Amy snapped. "I don't care if he's Dark Matter or Grey Matter! Simon's a living Pokémon and I'm going to help him!"

Simon trembled. "B-Bad…" he whimpered.

Amy sucked in a breath. "Are you with me or not, Darkrai?"

Darkrai knew what his answer had to be. He promised he'd always be there for her.

"I am," he said firmly. "I'm always with yoー"

Rai had found himself pulled into the story with such intensity. The more and more Zephyr had spoken of Darkrai, the more Rai felt sympathetic towards him. He had his best friend and their simple life, and one encounter had turned it all upside down. What had happened next? Surely it didn't end well, because…

But before Zephyr could reach its end, a shadow from the campfire stretched out against the wall, and out stepped Darkrai himself, his red eye gleaming furiously at them all.

"I didn't give you permission to tell that story!" he howled. And in his hands was something regal, spherical, and pink. From where he sat, Rai could feel the tremendous power that exuded from it. He sensed everyone around him tense, and even his own fur stood up from the strange, intimidating feeling that suddenly permeated the air.

"Th-That's…!" gasped Roger.

"...Palkia's power," finished Mona, sounding grave. "But when did he…?"

"Whatever you were planning to do, it's too late! The world of Pokémon is going to die and you're all going with it!"

"What the hell does he mean by that?!" snapped Skuntank angrily, but not even he could hide the fear in his voice. "I'm not dying!"

"Shut up!" roared Zephyr. "Darkrai, give up that orb right now!"

"And why should I do that?" he asked, his visible eye glowing with curiosity. "I might have power over nightmares but I've been living in one for decades! A world without Amy is NOTHING!"

"But it isn't!" Ella insisted. "If I can come back, then surely Sera and Amy can, too! We can find a way to-"

The flames of the campfire wavered frantically as they tried to stay alight, but it was as if the air itself made it flicker into nothing. All that was left was some sticks and smoke, and the light of the full moon in the sky.

"You CAN'T!" screeched Darkrai. "You can't, because she's dead! Not gone home back to the humans, DEAD!"

Rai sucked in a breath. "Darkrai, I understand how you fe一"

"If you understand then why aren't you helping me?" Darkrai whirled on Raiden, snarling. "You want Seraphina back, don't you?! Why aren't you joining me?!"

Rai could hear the heartache in his voice… no, voices. There were two parts of Darkrai now, and he could hear both of them hurting. "Because… this isn't right," he insisted. "Messing with our homes, destroying our family, friends and lives! You don't need to make everyone else suffer!"

"Everyone was already suffering!" he declared in return. "I'm just helping everyone put an end to it!"

"What… Do you mean by that?" Roger asked, the whiscash frowning in concern.

"He means that he can sense the negativity in everyone's hearts," Mona explained softly, wincing.

"You didn't even get to explain what Dark Matter is!" Skuntank growled, scowling at Zephyr.

"I was getting to it!" Zephyr snarled in response. A dragon pulse charged in his maw, which he then fired at Darkrai.

The orb in Darkrai's hand glowed a vibrant pink, and something in the air around him rippled, causing the attack to bend around Darkrai and connect with the wall behind him, causing the rocky wall to crumble somewhat.

The rayquaza glared. "You have no right to be using Palkia's power! How'd you even get it?"

"Like I'd tell you," Darkrai scoffed. "Enough playing around. I'm leaving."

A swirling, pink portal opened up behind Darkrai, and he glared at the group. "I don't care what you do, but if you chase me, I will kill anyone who tries."

"Darkrai!" Mona called, "W-Wait! You don't have to do this!"

He stopped and turned back to her. For a moment he seemed stunned, and the red glow of his eyes had dimmed some. "What… Amy?" he choked.

Rai felt his breath catch in his throat as he looked back at Mona, the cresselia just looked confused. "What…?" she said. "I'm not…"

Then Darkrai's hair shifted and he glared at Mona with bright red eyes. "You're playing tricks on me! Even the gods don't care about my suffering!"

"No, Darkrai, stop this!" Rai shouted, electricity fizzling in his fur. This was it, he couldn't back down. A blue bolt of electricity jumped from his fur, striking Darkrai directly. He howled in pain, and for a moment, Rai could hear two sets of screams. It was enough to make him stop. It was loud. Terrible. Painful.

"Why'd you stop?!" Skuntank snapped, "It was clearly hurting him!"

"Because…" Rai trailed off, blinking. "I…"

A ball of darkness formed in Darkrai's hand and he lobbed it at Rai, but before he could react, Zephyr moved in and blocked the blow, making him grunt a little. "Is that the thanks you give for someone trying to help?" sneered the rayquaza. "What happened back then was a mistake, they know bett一 we know better. I'm sorry nobody tried to help you. All of you. We cast you aside before anything else."

The shadows around them darkened, turning into deep pools of shadows. Rai was slightly worried he'd fall into one and fall asleep again. What if he woke up to an entirely different world? What if-

"You think your words are going to help now?!" yelled Darkrai. "It's too late to apologise for your actions!"

Rai blinked slowly in surprise. Despite Darkrai's words, Rai was hearing something else. Instead of those threats and retorts, he could still hear those voices. He could tell one wanted to listen, but the other was refusing.

Rai was starting to think it was too late.

For one of them, at least.

Whatever had happened to Dark Matter, it had become a force of darkness that needed to be stopped. Was it even possible to heal its heart, after all these years of hurt and sadness?

"Darkrai," called Rai, pouring what emotion he could into his voice. "Can you hear me? I'm trying to help. Just tell me what to do!"

A haggard breath left Darkrai, and his eye flickered. Blue. Red. Red. Red. Blue. Blue.

"R-Rai…!" he gasped, "Please! It's too late, just end me!"

"I can't!" Rai yelled. "We can help you, I promise!"

"We'll do everything we can to help!" Mona promised firmly. "Just keep fighting him!"

"Can't…!" said Darkrai. Red. Blue. Red. Blue. "Please…!"

"Hang in there!" Ella called. "As long as you don't stop fighting, we can help!"

"...Maybe we should do what he asks," said Skuntank with a wince. "Maybe it's the only way he knows…"

Roger glared. "No, that can't be it!"

Zephyr opened his mouth to speak, but a shadow ball crashed into his face, sending the serpent into the wet sand behind them.

"Zephyr!" Ella and Raiden yelled together.

Another attack was sent towards Mona, but Magnum had moved in the way. The attack was absorbed into his metal body, and something started to spread over him. His body dropped to the sand with a scary thud, and he didn't get up.

"N-No!" Mona cried, her eyes widened in horror. "H-He's..!"

The magnezone had been turned to stone.

Red.

The look in Darkai's eyes was fierce.

"I'm done talking," he sneered, then vanished into the waiting portal behind him. Even though he was gone, the pink, spacial portal remained, swirling and brimming with stolen power.

"Magnum!" wailed Ella as she threw her paws on to him. "Speak to me! What did he do to you?!"

Raiden didn't hear any buzzes, whirs or sparks. Not a single sound of reassurance. His heart sank and a single breath left his mouth. Mona drifted to Ella's side to murmur words of sympathy.

Skuntank spoke up first. "Is he…?"

"His soul has been taken," croaked Zephyr from the sand as he recovered. "That's what Dark Matter does. His ability lets him take the life force of any Pokemon and turn them to stone. He must not have been in full control when he attacked me."

"So he can just do that?" asked Roger with astonishment.

"Sort of," answered Zephyr as he slowly rose from the sand, checking his body for any serious marks. "It takes power from 'negative energy' and the darkness in people's hearts. By taking their life force, Dark Matter thinks it's 'purifying' them."

"That's horrible…" Roger murmured.

"Indeed," said Zephyr, who was watching Ella sob over Magnum's lifeless body. "Ella… I'm so sorry, this is our fault."

"You and who else?" Skuntank questioned with a glare. "What the heck happened to create that thing?"

"All of us," Mona said sadly, her natural glow dimming a little. Her gaze hadn't pulled away from Magnum in the sand. "Dark Matter is a creature borne from the negativity in Pokémon. I'm not quite sure how it happened… but it did."

"Well that's helpful," muttered Skuntank, making Mona wince.

Zephyr glared, but it was half-hearted. "I wish I could tell you more, but we need to hurry… I don't think that portal's going to stay around much longer… and he needs to be stopped."

"What's he trying to do?" asked Ella between shaky breaths. "He said something about the human world…"

"He's trying to merge them," Zephyr explained gravely. "If that happens, everything we know will be destroyed… Probably."

"Then we can't wait any longer," declared Rai as he took steps towards the portal. "I promised Sera I'd protect this world… I'm not going to let anyone destroy it!"

He turned back to look at each of his companions. Legends, heroes, an old rival and a fellow teammate of Team Overcharged. It was quite the group that had come together… all for one cause.

Rai felt ready. It was time to face Darkrai and save him… somehow.

"Mona, do you think what you've been doing to help Zephyr, Groudon and Kyogre will work on Darkrai?" he asked her.

She perked up at that while all heads turned to her. "Oh! I'm not sure… but it's worth a try! If we can help it, I'd like to save Darkrai…"

"Then it's worth a shot!" declared Raiden, stamping a paw into the sand. "Who can still fight? Because we're going now."

"We're in," Skuntank and Roger said together. They stared at each other, baffled, before sharing a smile.

Ella sniffled, the sylveon moving off of Magnum's body and stepping closer to Raiden. "I… I am, too. Corsair kept going when he lost me… I can't stop, no matter what."

Zephyr smiled sadly. "As much as I'd love to… I need to stay. I need to make sure Groudon and Kyogre are alright."

Raiden nodded. "I understand. Thank you, Zephyr, for all your help!"

"Yes, thank you, Zephyr! You've been such a big help," said Ella, smiling at him.

The rayquaza cleared his throat and rose to the air. "N-No worries, but good luck, all of you. You'll need it. Don't listen to Dark Matter's words… He'll try and trick you."

With a final wave, Zephyr the Rayquaza flew out towards the water, and the remaining members of the dead campfire nodded in agreement.

No matter what happened, this was it.

Leading the charge, Rai walked with purpose towards the portal with his friends behind him.

Then everything disappeared.

Amy ran while holding Simon close to her chest. The lucario panted heavily while her aura feelers worked overtime to help her keep track of her pursuer.

Darkrai had it easier with the floating, but even that took energy. He looked back and tossed a shadow ball behind him.

"Grr, stop that!" barked Rayquaza. "Just give me Dark Matter, and none of this has to happen!"

"He's just a kid!" Amy shouted. "You haven't even given him a chance!"

They'd been on the run since that incident in Trove Bay. How long has it been? Weeks? Months? Darkrai had lost count. It hadn't taken long for the villagers to storm Amy's home, requesting that she give Simon up so they could force him to undo the petrification.

But Simon had refused. He panicked over the 'darkness' in their hearts.

Darkrai knew that as long as they had Simon, he could never take Amy to the human world. Simon was a creature that, as Dark Matter and in the body of a child, struggled to understand how much damage he was causing. In the wrong hands he could…

Draconic winds buffeted them as they fled, making Darkrai hiss as he looked back and fired another shadow ball.

This time Rayquaza retaliated with a dragon pulse, confusing Darkrai as it felt like the counterattack was intentionally wide. Was he trying not to hurt them?

"Just give me Dark Matter, and you can go back to living your normal lives!" begged Rayquaza. "You weren't meant to handle this!"

"Everything happens for a reason!" Amy retorted. "I woke up in this world for some reason, and I choose to believe it was for this purpose! To make sure Simon grows up on the right path!"

"There is no right path!" Rayquaza retorted. "You're attached to something that cannot be good! It's made of this world's negativity, there's no way to fix it!"

"Him!" Amy corrected with a growl. "His name is Simon!"

"Amy…" whimpered the pichu in her arms.

Conflict swirled within Darkrai. Did he fight back? Did he convince Amy to hand over Simon? He'd come to care for the boy but… he was causing so much trouble. Could his negative background even be reversed or helped? It seemed so deep rooted… but the time he'd spent with Amy had been happy.

What was he supposed to do?

Rayquaza growled. "Then you leave me with no choice!"

He roared at the skies, and the area around them tinted red. Darkrai's heart leapt into his throat. "Go, run!" he cried, as he pushed harder.

"What the hell is happening?!" she snapped, and a glance up at the sky answered her question.

Meteors started raining down, fierce draconic energy could be felt in the very air. Amy's pupils shrank as she pushed harder to flee.

Darkrai's body tingled with alarm. "Duck!" he screamed, and Amy crouched as one of the meteors sailed over their heads and crashed into the ground ahead of them. He raced over and grabbed Amy's wrist, pulling her sideways and away from the oncoming onslaught.

One crashed behind them, the blast from the impact pushing them to the ground. Simon tumbled out of Amy's arms, the pichu rolling a distance before trying to get up.

"Stop… hurting Amy…!" he screamed, his little body rippling with darkness.

Rayquaza glared as he caught up, his eyes fierce and mad. "It will stop when you give yourself up! None of this has to happen to them!"

"Rayquaza! Stop it!" Amy begged as she tried to get to her feet. Darkrai also found himself struggling. His body ached, refusing to float any further as he helplessly watched Rayquaza approach Simon, charging an attack in his maw.

"Simon, run!" she screamed. "Run away and be safe! I'll come and find you!"

"No.. I'm going to protect you!" Simon declared, staring up at Rayquaza. Flecks of light sparked across his body while strings of shadows leaked from him. "Good things should be protected!"

"Listen to Amy, Simon, just run!" Darkrai yelled, straining to float closer. "Rayquaza… STOP!"

Amy had climbed to her feet too soon.

Darkrai saw Simon unleash an attack made of pure darkness right as Rayquaza fired his hyper beam. A blur of blue, then Darkrai heard a scream. The attacks had collided into an explosion that blasted everyone away, ripping trees from their roots and grass from the dirt. Darkrai had to duck to avoid a tree that blasted right over him.

"Amy?!" Darkrai screeched, already trying to crawl his way over.

The lucario was on the ground in the middle of the blast, her body marred. Darkrai couldn't see one of her ears. She rasped and wheezed, but couldn't move.

Rayquaza snorted. "I told you I'd only hurt him! Why'd you have to get in the way?!"

Simon stared blankly, eyes focused on nothing but the one on the ground in front of him. "Why…? Why her…?"

"I… told you, didn't I…?" coughed Amy. "He deserves to live, too…"

"Amy!" Darkrai sobbed, scooping her up in his arms. "A-Amy… why? Rayquaza, do something! Help her!"

Rayquaza gravely shook his head. "I'm sorry, Darkrai… There's not much I can do. I can feel her fading from here…"

Darkrai watched in a panic, breaths leaving him in hiccups.

No.

No!

No. No. No. No. NO

"H-Hey… Darkrai…!" rasped Amy, reaching up to touch his cheek with a gentle paw. "Focus… okay? Don't cry."

But Darkrai didn't listen. Tears were already streaming down his face as he blubbered. "A-Amy… please, you can't… I… I love you."

She smiled gently up at him. "I know… why'd you wait so long… to say it…? Silly…"

He sobbed. "I wanted… to take you home…"

"Don't you… get it?" she said with a raspy chuckle. "I've been home for… years. You were home, and Simon. That was home…"

"Why did you… protect me?" asked Simon, his own voice cracking from the emotion. "Could have saved yourself…"

Rayquaza hissed and looked away. "Because she thought you deserved better, can't you even understand that?! If you don't get it then it's just another reason why-"

"SHUT UP!" screamed Darkrai. "Shut up! She's dying because of you!"

Rayquaza winced and looked away.

Amy chuckled, or tried to. What escaped her was a throaty gasp that made Darkrai wince. "Simon… I know there's good in you, don't… give up on it…"

Her eyes fluttered closed. With a final rasp, her body slowly went still.

Darkrai's chest squeezed tight, carving pain across his body. Through his heart. It was terrible, awful, painful. Why did love hurt so much?

Simon hadn't moved. He stood there, watching Amy, waiting for her to get back up.

Rayquaza slowly bowed his head. "I'm sorry that it came to this," he said sullenly. "She didn't have to go."

"If you had left us alone, she'd STILL be here!" roared Darkrai, making the serpent flinch.

"I… I was only doing my jo-"

"Job?! We were helping Simon! But you were too scared and stupid to see that!"

Rayquaza gave him a stern look. "You know as well as I do that this thing shouldn't exist!"

There was a sniffle, and Darkrai turned his head to the source.

Rolling down the dark pichu's cheeks were tears. Real, fast tears. Something about that gave him pause.

"...A-Amy… why did she have to go…? She was helping me…!" sobbed Simon. "Is nobody going to help me anymore…? Am I alone?"

Darkrai felt his heart clench more at those words. Despite Dark Matter一 no, Simon, being a creature of negativity and darkness, even he wasn't free from emotions like these. He could smile, laugh and… cry.

"Well?" prompted Rayquaza. "Are you going to let me take him?"

What right did anyone have to take his life like this?

As Darkrai watched Simon cry over Amy's body, he made his decision.

"No."

"'No'?!" questioned Rayquaza. "What do you mean, 'no'?! We need to take him out!"

"No. Amy wanted him to live, and so I'm going to honor that," Darkrai explained. He moved to Simon, picking him up gently. The pichu moved to hide more within Darkrai's hold, shivering and sniffling. He placed a hand on Amy's body.

"Don't follow us."

Rayquaza tried to reach out with a claw. "Wait, Darkrai, stop! You're making a mistake!"

Darkrai sneered at him. "It was your mistake when you killed Amy. Farewell."

Taking Amy and Simon with him, Darkrai sank into the shadows, leaving Rayquaza's pleas to reach nothing but air.

He was going to protect Simon, no matter what.

That was Amy's wish.

. . .

It was raining by the time that Darkrai re-emerged, making sure to find a place that was truly alone. Rayquaza was king of skies, however. This peace would only last so long.

Darkrai stared at Amy's lifeless body. It had gone cold long ago.

Simon escaped from his arms, wiping his eyes. "Darkrai… what do we do now?"

"We bury her," Darkrai said hollowly. "We cover her in dirt so she can rest."

"Why?"

"Because… it means we don't have to look at them anymore."

"Oh."

That didn't feel good to say.

It felt like precious hours. It took too long to dig the hole. Darkrai's claws felt numb. Maybe Rayquaza was giving him a moment to grieve.

Simon had tried to help, but he was slow and tired. He'd ended up falling asleep.

When Darkrai thought it was finally deep enough, he carefully lowered Amy's body into the hole.

He wanted to say words, but he didn't even know what to say. What he was supposed to say. What did you say during times like this?

How were you supposed to say goodbye?

"Amy…" Darkrai choked out. "I don't… I don't know what words to say. It doesn't feel real yet. It just looks like you're asleep…"

Of course, there was no reply. The wind stirred around him, leaving nothing to answer him but the echo of the breeze.

"I… I'm sorry I couldn't protect you," he whispered.

"Me too…"

Darkrai whipped his head towards the blackened pichu, wondering if it was just his imagination or if Simon was darker. More shadowy.

Whisps curled off of Simon in unnatural ways, clawing at the air around him as if they were trying to steal all the oxygen.

"Why did she have to go?" asked Darkrai, voice cracking. "She had… So much ahead of her."

"What do you want to do now?" Simon stared at him with curious eyes. "Do you want revenge?"

"Revenge…? But this is Amy's home, I don't want to hurt it…"

"Not anymore. Amy is gone… It is no longer her home. Nowhere is."

Darkrai stared emptily at Amy's body. Lifeless. Unmoving. Dead.

No longer could she see the human world with him.

No longer could she be his friend.

No longer could they be together.

No longer.

Tears welled up in Darkrai's eyes, and he collapsed against the edge of the grave. A single, raw and devastating scream tore through his mouth. Pidgey and Taillow in nearby trees all immediately took off with panicked shrieks. He screamed until his body started trembling and nothing else would leave his mouth.

Instead of fleeing, Simon moved closer. The air slowly shifted into a terrible, horrible feeling that filled Darkrai with many layers of unsettling.

"Amy is gone… She is never coming back. That makes you angry, doesn't it?"

With so many emotions swirling through him, Darkrai couldn't focus. He didn't know what to do or say or how to feel.

Something crept into him, and like a lifeline he clung onto it. The Something settled into him. A strange warmth that left behind numbing coldness. None of it bothered him. He felt the Something get comfortable. Darkrai liked this feeling.

"...It does," said Darkrai as he lifted himself up slowly. "It makes me really angry."

"They have to pay," said Dark Matter.

"Yes… They all need to pay," Darkrai said.

Darkrai felt himself smile. Even though he no longer saw Simon anywhere, he could feel his presence nearby. Inside him, even. He could feel a new power, lying dormant. But it needed time to get stronger…

"Yes… When we're ready… They'll all pay," they said, their voices now one and the same.

Nothing was going to get in their way.

"...ai!"

"Wa… up…!"

"Rai!"

Rai snapped to attention, his eyes snapping open before grogginess even had a chance to settle in. The last thing he'd remembered was entering that portal and then…

He'd had a dream about Darkrai and Dark Matter. He must have fallen asleep again.

Rai was getting sick of that.

"Rai! Oh, thank goodness you're awake!" cried Mona. There was a hint of panic and desperation to her relieved voice. "Wh-When you fell asleep and I couldn't wake you up I… I thought you were going to sleep forever!"

"Forever…?" said Raiden as he got to his feet. "That's what you thought when we first met too, wasn't it, Mona?"

The cresselia smiled, but it lacked any fondness. "Are you alright? We really need to get going to catch up with everyone else. I… I'm worried about them."

"The others…?"

As Raiden slowly looked around, he noticed that… many things around him were a deep pink.

The ground swirled and bubbled underneath, and whenever he moved a paw, the floor rippled in that spot. The sky was purple and dark, which occasionally flashed, but Rai was sure that wasn't really a sky overhead to begin with. Ahead was a mass of walls that emanated a strange, but welcoming feeling of foreboding. He recognised that immediately to be a dungeon.

"This is Spacial Rift… Palkia's domain. Everyone ran ahead to get through the dungeon and find Darkrai and Dark Matter before it was too late. I hope they haven't all been turned to stone…"

"But why did they go without you?" asked Rai with concern. "If something happens to them… we won't know!"

"Because they didn't want to sit around and wait," Mona said with a sigh. "And we didn't want to take you into a fight while you were asleep…"

Raiden let out an annoyed breath. They weren't wrong, and if any of them had fallen asleep instead… he was sure a similar decision might have been made.

"Anyways, Rai, did you have another dream?" Mona asked worriedly. "If it was about Darkrai, I need to know."

He nodded and quickly recounted the dream to the cresselia. She listened intently, her eyes focused on him the whole time. When he was done, Mona looked troubled.

"So… Amy died in the crossfire like that…? No wonder Darkrai's so mad… he lost his best friend, because Rayquaza and the other legends didn't want her to look after Dark Matter…"

Rai felt his jaw tighten. "Yeah. From how it felt in the dream, it seemed like… Amy had a chance to help Dark Matter, and instead… we lost all three of them."

It sickened him. It made him mad. If only the legends hadn't stepped in. What did Dialga think about this? Did he even know what was happening, or was he still recovering from the events of Temporal Tower, ignorant to everything going on? Was Palkia alright?

He would need those answers later…

"So what do you want to do now?" Mona asked him.

Rai knew what he wanted to do. He wanted to save Darkrai, he wanted to help Dark Matter. He wanted to resurrect Amy and Sera and Magnum and everyone else that had suffered from this tragedy.

But he knew not all of those would be possible.

"I want to save everyone. But I know that that might not be possible… there's so many people to save, and it might be too late for some of them," he answered bitterly.

"Like who?"

"Like… Dark Matter, and Darkrai. They've been suffering for so many years… Amy's death pushed them into all of this."

Mona bowed her head. "I understand… But we'll save Darkrai if we can separate him from Dark Matter, at least."

"Will that save everyone else?" asked Rai with a wince. Even if they'd manage to separate the two… would that reverse the damage caused, or was it too late for the victims of this unfortunate duo?

Mona shook her head with a worried frown. "I… I'm sorry, Rai, there's no way of knowing," she answered, then turned her head towards the dungeon. "Shall we get going? We need to catch up with everyone else."

He nodded firmly and started for the dungeon. Mona followed close behind, sounding nervous. "Don't worry," he assured her. "I'm an expert at dungeons at this point!"

She smiled appreciatively and nodded. "Right, let's do this!"

The dungeon had been erratic, as mad as Rai thought a realm belonging to Palkia should be. Nothing about anything made sense. Paths curved and took them upside-down and right-side up. On walls, on ceilings… or were they all floors?

Rai didn't know. He and Mona surged on. They couldn't pause any longer. They needed to catch up. They had to. Without Mona, could they even win? Hopefully all his friends weren't already turned to stone…

Ella, one of his many new friends since this all began. A human who saved his world before, and she'd come back, and was helping the world all over again. He admired her, and secretly, he hoped that her existence meant that Sera could come back as well…

Skuntank, who used to be his dreaded rival, was now becoming one of his most loyal friends. He was doing his best to swallow his fears and help stop Dark Matter. Rai couldn't let him down, most of all.

And finally, besides Sera, Roger was his best friend. His longest friend. They met so many months ago during Team Overload's first 'real' exploration. As far as Rai was concerned, he'd been there since the beginning.

He couldn't let anyone else suffer at the hands of Darkrai and Dark Matter. Nobody. Not even themselves.

Thankfully, even Palkia's domain operated like normal dungeons. He was able to scrounge up what items they could carry. A blast seed, two revivers… a couple of orans. Hopefully they'd be enough, and that his friends had picked up their own items during their trek.

"Don't worry guys… we're coming!" Rai said.

It was time to end this.

Time to finally uphold Seraphina's final wish.

Time to save their world, their home, their friends.

Hopefully nobody else had to die.

Many twists, turns and curves later, Mona and Raiden could hear the sounds of fighting up ahead, along with the familiar shouts of many.

"We're close!" Mona cried. "Just a little longer, Rai!"

"Right, let's speed up!" he replied, feeling a new burst of adrenaline fill his body.

This was it.

The curling, swerving paths coalesced into a pink field. Rai was starting to wonder if Palkia just really liked that colour.

His friends were fighting Darkrai, whose arms had stretched out into wispy, clawed limbs of were spots on the ground that looked like they'd been scorched by darkness, and a quick look told Rai that nobody was a statue.

Skuntank scampered away as one of Darkrai's arms reached out to slap him, trying to fight back with flames from his tail at the same time. Roger was dodging beams of darkness being fired at him from the other arm, while trying to counter with his own frosty beams. They were moving around too much, which made it hard to land any real hits, so what was their plan?

Darkrai hissed as a pink blast hit his back, and Ella was dancing around, preparing to dodge any immediate counters thrown her way. Pools of darkness kept forming under her, and quickly she escaped before they could put her to sleep.

"Rai, you're awake!" cried Roger with relief, before he spiraled away from a dark pulse. "Are you alright?!"

"Took your time, Raiden!" Skuntank gasped as he struggled to catch his breath. "T-Tag in! I need a quick break!"

Electricity was already crackling through his fur in anticipation. He was already eager to start fighting with the others. "On it!"

"Stop resisting!" Darkrai snarled. "You'll only suffer more!"

Raiden ignored them and dashed forwards, hearing the relieved wheeze of Skuntank as he pulled away. The luxio's fur tingled and sparked as he tackled Darkrai, sending electricity from his body to his opponent as they connected. Darkrai hissed at the contact and swatted Rai away with one of his arms, sending him flying. Rai twisted his body and landed safely on the ground, but he winced as he felt a lingering sting from the swat.

"You alright?" Skuntank called.

"Y-Yeah! Just fine!" Rai called back with another wince.

"Be careful, Rai!" warned Mona. "Getting hit by him looks bad, keep clear of his attacks!"

"Why hasn't he just killed us all yet?" asked Rai, quickly darting away from another swat.

"Apparently he needs time!" Roger answered from the other side of the fight. "He's saving his power to merge the worlds or whatever!"

Darkrai screeched and a shadow ball careened into Roger, sending the whiscash to the ground. Rai snarled and charged electricity in his fur, expelling it in a blue lightning bolt that struck Darkrai in return, who hissed and retaliated with a dark pulse. Rai barely moved out of the way in time, and felt the attack strike one of his back legs. A burning sensation tore through his leg, and he winced and hissed.

"Darkrai, Dark Matter, please!" Rai begged. "You need to stop this! You're going to kill everyone if you merge these worlds together, they don't belong!"

"Nobody belongs!" they screeched. "I can sense everyone's negativity, all their pain and anguish! I can put everyone out of their misery this way!"

"We're only miserable because of what you're doing to us!" Ella cried. "You hurt one of my best friends and took the other away from me! If you stop we can try and help you- find some way to get her back!"

"Stop LYING!" they roared. "Amy is gone! We saw her die, not disappear!"

"Maybe they can make an exception!" Roger tried. "We've all seen how special she is to the both of you!"

"You think they'd make an exception for us?! They all hate us! Everyone wants us dead!"

Their words struck Rai harder than the dark pulse that crashed into him. Raiden tumbled to the ground, groaning faintly. He could hear every inch and facet of their pain and agony. All the turmoil. All of the hurt. The anger.

Rai so desperately wanted to help them.

But he wasn't sure if he could.

"Rai!" Mona cried, "Are you alright?!"

"Y-Yeah! I'm fi一"

Darkrai flew forwards, and suddenly Rai felt a vice grip his neck. No air could enter or leave his lungs, and all that escaped his mouth was a strange, surprised wheeze.

"Rai!" Roger cried.

In his quickly thinning vision, Rai saw the bright lights of Roger's ice, Mona and Ella's fairy attacks, and even Skuntank's poison. The attacks struck Darkrai's back and he hissed, but only increased his hold.

"Keep attacking me and I'll end it for him!" they threatened. Rai had only barely registered that he was talking about him, and that the sounds of battle had quickly come to a halt.

Rai almost felt his vision fade altogether. His throat felt like it could snap at any minute. Sparks jumped desperately from his fur and Darkrai retaliated by swinging his hand down. Rai felt his back scream in agony as it connected with the ground, and he could no longer focus enough to produce his electricity. Every part of his body wanted to stop feeling this way, it felt horrible, terrible, and一

Everything was spinning too much.

"It's you we hate the most! Why do you keep fighting even though your friends are dying?! Why can't you share our pain一we went through the same thing!"

"'Cause… owe her…!" Rai choked out, feeling the very words too difficult to even leave his throat.

"Why does her promise matter? She's DEAD!" they bellowed. "WHY?!"

"Because that's the kind of friend Raiden is!" replied Roger's desperate voice. "It was Seraphina's dream for this world to stay peaceful, and that's what Rai is honoring!"

"Real friends don't become assholes and take it out on others when they lose someone dear to them!" Suntank growled, adding on. "You both chose to take it out on people who had nothing to do with this! You had a choice to keep moving on, and you couldn't find the strength to do it- and that's where you and Rai are different!"

"I promised her I'd take her home!"

"...was …home!" Raiden tried to croak.

They snarled and tossed him like a stone. Rai felt his body go airborne, but he was just relieved that the pressure on his throat was gone. The second he tumbled to the ground he hacked and coughed and wheezed for air.

"What did you say?" they growled.

"I saw it, in a dream, from your memories somehow-" he rasped, feeling the hoarseness and pain in his throat. "Amy was home! You both made her feel at home together! You don't want to destroy the place she loved, do you…?"

Everything fell silent. Rai could hear the sound of his own breaths, and he and his teammates dared not move while Darkrai stared at him. He could feel the way that Darkrai and Dark Matter both together and separately were watching him. Trying to see if he could really and truly determine if Raiden was telling the truth.

"I am," he said out loud, making Darkrai flinch. "I'm telling the truth, and you both know it, right…?"

"I…"

"Please, Darkrai, Dark Matter!" Mona pleaded. "You can see it in Rai's eyes, can't you? That he's telling the truth?"

He still couldn't explain it, but it was like he could see almost exactly how they were feeling. Rai had the strange sense that Darkrai was stuck.

This was his chance.

"You don't have to do this…!" Raiden cried, croaking out as much emotion as he could. He needed them to feel every bit of it, every ounce of determination and hope. They needed all of it. "When Amy was with both of you, those days were her favourite! I know Amy loved both of you, or she wouldn't have protected you both until the very end!"

Dakrai held his hands to his head, and the lustrous orb fell to the dungeon floor. Nobody dared to make a move for it yet. "But she… why would she die for us?" they asked.

"Because the legends made a mistake," Mona called. "Rayquaza he… Zephyr should have never chased you all down like that!"

"Amy… she's your partner, right?" Ella said. "I'm sure it hurts a lot… but this isn't the way to fix that. You can't undo killing everyone, there'd be nothing left!"

"...Really? I'd be killing… everything she loves?" asked Darkrai.

"Yes!" Skuntank snapped. "You'd be killing what everyone else loves too! We all love being alive and being with friends and family! You can um… still have friends!"

"I can have… friends?"

"Yes!" promised Roger. "If you stop all this we can be your friends! You won't be alone anymore…!"

Rai slowly got to his feet, keeping his eyes on Darkrai all the while. "You can stop this!" he declared. "All you have to do is join us… we'll clean this mess up together."

With a blink, blue eyes stared at him, and Darkrai slowly held out his hand. "Please… help me!" he pleaded. "I don't want to do this!"

Quickly, Rai's eyes met everyone else's. Slowly, each of them nodded as their gazes met, giving him the go ahead. Mona closed her eyes and started to focus.

It was time to save Darkrai.

Rai swallowed, barely noticing the way his paw glowed and his leg grew longer as he stretched out. Suddenly, it was easier to meet Darkrai's eyes, who was watching him with a strange look of awe and fascination.

"Raiden…" Roger whispered in awe. "You… you're evolving!"

But he pushed on, not reacting. In a way this felt natural to him. Rai just wanted to take Darkrai's hand and end all this madness. The glow faded, and Rai barely had time to marvel over his extra fur, and the stripes on the back of his forelegs as he placed his paw in Darkrai's hand.

For a moment, all was still.

Darkrai's blue eyes stared at Rai, and Rai stared back.

"You evolved, because you care about this… that much?" Darkrai asked softly.

"We all do," Rai said firmly. "Everything you've done… it's because you're hurting, right? We can help you recover… but you need to know something first."

"...What is it?"

"I forgive you."

Quiet stretched across the battlefield the moment those words left his mouth. He could sense the agape stare from Skuntank, and the agreeing nods from his friends. He watched as Darkrai went through several emotions. Surprise. Confusion. Grief. Confliction.

"Forgive… me?" he asked hesitantly.

"Both of you," Rai said firmly. "You and Dark Matter. You're both hurting… People do a lot of things while they're hurting. It might not be okay now… but we can make it okay."

"Forgive… us…" Darkrai murmured to himself, then the conflicted gaze trailed back to meet Rai's eyes once again. "The hurt can… go away?"

"Yes!" Rai promised. "I mean it… we won't let you fall anymore. Let us catch you."

Darkrai let out a breath. Rai held his, jaw tight and teeth clenched.

"Iー"

Darkrai seized, and a horrible scream ripped through him. His free hand covered his face, stopping Rai from seeing the colour of his eyes.

"AUUUUGGHHHH!"

"Darkrai?!" Rai and Mona asked in alarm.

"What's happening?!" Ella cried, ribbons waving frantically.

"Isn't it obvious? Talking's not going to be enough!" Skuntank snarled. The tip of his tail was already preparing to launch an attack.

"Skuntank, wait!" Roger ordered, holding out a fin. "We don't want to ruin this chance yet until we know."

Wisps of shadows curled off of Darkrai's body, clawing at the air and digging into Raiden's leg. He gasped and tried to pull away. It was as if sharp stones were painfully cutting into his flesh. He peered past the gaps in Darkrai's fingers, and saw the glints of red that told him everything.

Dark Matter was back in control.

"G-Guys!" Rai cried, as he tried to pull away from Darkrai's grasp.

"Is that enough waiting!?" Skuntank snapped, and he charged forwards, a burst of flames streaming from his tail.

The rest followed his charge. Ice beams and moonblasts also firing at Darkrai. Attacks struck his back, and he howled. The grip on Rai's leg slackened.

Rai saw his chance to dive for the forgotten lustrous orb, tucking it against his body as he rolled away. The orb was hard like glass against his body, and while it felt fragile, he could feel the immense power stored inside it.

"Give it back!" Darkrai screeched, swiping an arm, but Rai tumbled, not used to his longer legs which actually helped him stumble underneath the arm.

His friends backed him up. Skuntank blasted more fire, then Roger followed it up with a spray of water, giving Rai a chance to recover and escape.

"We need it to end the suffering!"

"No you don't!" cried Rai. "We can help you!"

"H-Help… me!"

"That's enough!" Mona yelled, and she floated in front of Darkrai, glowing fiercely. Everyone else knew well enough to cover their eyes as Mona lit up the area with her blinding, piercing light.

The screech that came from Darkrai made Raiden wish he could cover his ears as well, but he was still clutching Palkia's orb. "Fight it!" Rai screamed.

"HHHUUUUUUUAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGHHH!"

Darkrai's body twitched violently, arms flailing and wisps of darkness falling off of him and hitting the ground. They pooled and sunk into the floor as they fell, Rai couldn't see where any of it went.

"What's happening now?!" cried Skuntank.

"Rai, take the orb and run, we've got this!" Roger called, then a sudden arm lashed out sending him careening through the air.

"Roger!" Rai cried.

"Darkrai, enough! Stop fighting us! Fight Dark Matter instead! Why does he still want to hurt everyone?!" Mona cried.

The creature's breaths were ragged. Every sound expressed how much pain they were in.

Rai wanted it to stop.

"It's too late!" Dark Matter seethed. "If they wanted to help, why wasn't it sooner?!"

"Because we didn't know!" Mona replied desperately. "We're sorry it happened like this, but we can help you now! It doesn't have to be this way!"

"What Rayquaza did was a mistake!" yelled Rai, trying to be as loud as he could. "He should have been helping you too, but he got scared!"

"Lies!"

More words also left their mouth. "It isn't!"

Darkrai's body paused from his own words. "...Why do you believe them?"

"Because I felt it from Raiden! I felt how much he wants to help! I keep feeling it! I… I want his help!"

Rai felt his heart light up with a new determination. A grin slowly stretched across his face. "Fight him, Darkrai! You can do it!"

With Darkrai occupied, Ella slowly moved, not wanting to get his attention. She slowly made her way to Roger to check on him, and Rai quickly nodded his thanks.

"Amy wouldn't want this! Sh-She wouldn't want to see her homes destroyed…!" pleaded Darkai. "Simon, please—!"

"DON'T USE THAT NAME!" he screeched.

Darkrai screeched in pain, body writing and falling to the ground. A shadowy growth started forming on his back. "If you can't keep going, then you're of no use to me!"

"Wh-What's going on?!" Skuntank cried. "Is Dark Matter popping out?"

"N-No… don't…!" Darkrai rasped, body shaking. His breaths were uneven and pained.

"You don't control me, I've had control of you this whole time! I'm strong enough without you now!"

"I'm not letting you destroy this world!" Mona cried, casting a moonblast that struck Darkrai's back. Multiple cries and hisses came from the body.

"STOP THAT!"

"N-No… keep going…!"

Rai tensed as he watched. Roger and Ella came up beside him, each looking tired and apprehensive.

"What do we do, Rai?" Roger asked softly. "He's hurting, but we can't let Dark Matter escape!"

"I want to save him, but I don't know if we can…" Ella said with a frown.

"No, we can save him. We do that by stopping them," Rai said firmly.

"As long as we stop our home from being destroyed!" Skuntank snarled. "I don't want anyone suffering any more than they need to!"

"P-Please…" Darkrai begged.

Team Overcharged all shared a nod. They knew what they had to do, and they were all in on it.

It was time to end this.

Rai roared, electricity sparking from his fur. He let it build up before releasing it in a big, blue discharge. Darkrai's body writhed and wails echoed throughout the dungeon.

"You're not going to stop me!"

The growing mass on Darkrai's back grew and grew… until it burst. Darkrai screamed in pain as a ball of swirling darkness ripped from his back, causing his body to collapse.

Skuntank swore. "Enough fucking around! Let's beat Dark Matter up!" He found a berry among his belongings and ate it whole. Then he ran up to the darkness as a noxious cloud exploded from his tail.

Dark Matter flinched, and it was enough for Roger to fire off his ice beam. Ella joined in with the bright flash of a dazzling gleam. Mona followed it with a swift moonblast, and the fighting started again.

While his companions dodged beams of darkness, Rai clutched the orb and scrambled to Darkrai. "Are you alright?!" he asked.

"Please… stop him…" wheezed Darkrai.

Rai nodded firmly. "We will. I promise… just hold onto this for us, okay? Can I trust you?" he held out Palkia's orb, and Darkrai took it, nodding quickly and clutching it tight against his chest.

"Please… save Amy's home," Darkrai begged.

Raiden placed a paw on Darkrai comfortingly. "Don't worry… we will," he assured him, then charged back into battle to join his friends.

He could see that everyone was starting to get exhausted. All the past fights were catching up to them, and none of them were riding evolution highs like he was. Roger's dodges were getting sluggish, Skuntank's irritation was rising, and Mona and Ella were looking quite exhausted. Rai still felt a surge of energy from becoming a Luxio and then a Luxray in such a short time, he was sure he'd crash soon, just like his friends.

Dark Matter roared, a large gust of wind suddenly shoved them all backwards, knocking most of them to the ground and sending Darkrai tumbling. A pulse of darkness quickly followed, and as Raiden braced himself, he felt it sink into his fur. It settled, and he felt the familiar feeling of poison course through his veins, sapping his energy and strength.

That was bad. They had to make this quick.

"D-Did anyone else get poisoned just now…?" Roger asked, grimacing as he got back up.

"Yes…!" Mona gasped, the light of her wings dimming as she slowly returned to a comfortable height.

"Enough games! I'm killing all of you!" Dark Matter screeched. Another wave of corruption pulsed out, tearing through any attacks that were going to strike him. It struck everyone again, wearing them down. Rai heard Darkrai groan weakly, and he could see the quickly building fatigue on his friend's faces.

"H-How'd he get so strong…?" Skuntank said while panting.

"Stay firm, everyone!" Mona called, rising back up with a pained grimace.

"We were fighting Darkrai long enough… and I'm still feeling the fight with Zephyr, I'm not sure I can keep going…!" Ella huffed, her ribbons flailing in a panic. "But we have to! For our world!"

Rai pushed through the poison and charged again, his fur crackling. Dark Matter's arm lashed out, and Rai feinted, using that moment to release his stored lighting to shock companions used that moment to join in. Blasts of water, poison, and the mystical all followed.

"Enough!"

"I won't let you hurt Rai!" Roger cried.

A blast shot out, aiming directly for the luxrary. Instead of dodging, he was knocked roughly to the side, enough for Rai to tumble to the ground.

"No!" cried Mona in alarm.

Rai scrambled to his feet and looked back in time to see him. Roger had a peaceful smile on his face as his body became encased in stone.

"N-No!" Rai screamed.

"Asshole!" growled Skuntank.

"Simon… stop it…!" Darkrai croaked. "You don't have to cause all this pain! Please… y-you can stop now!"

Dark Matter froze.

"I don't…"shadows stretched and curled all around the being. Tendrils stretched for the floor, the air, and everything else. Dark Matter didn't move.

Rai wanted to be angry. He wanted to be scared. Hurt. Upset. Roger had been turned to stone, and they hadn't even found a cure yet!

A ribbon slowly curled around one of his legs, Ella slowly sidling up to him. She didn't say anything, but Rai could see the understanding and comfort in her eyes.

She'd lost Magnum the same way, after all.

"Simon… how many more have to sacrifice themselves like Amy…?" Darkrai pleaded, slowly clawing towards him. He'd left the orb behind. "Please… let's stop this and fix it all…!"

The silence was deafening. Raiden could hear his heartbeat, Ella's ragged breathing beside him as the poison slowly ticked away at her stamina. Hell, he could feel it slowly sapping his own strength away.

Rai locked eyes with Darkrai, horrified eyes meeting determined ones. In that moment, Rai knew exactly what was going to happen, and he let Darkrai proceed.

"But they hurt Amy… they didn't understand…"

"But they… do now…! The world has changed, so we should change with them!" Darkrai replied. Shadows were leaking from his body while he moved. To Rai, it looked like Darkrai's blood.

Mona looked at him with concern. She'd noticed, too. "Darkrai, please… you're wounded!"

"Please… this is nothing!" hissed Darkrai.

"Exactly! This is nothing against the pain I felt! I never want to feel like that again!"

Darkrai pushed himself up, and floated up, wrapping his arms around the dark being. "You won't… I'll be here, I promise!"

Rai felt lightning crackle in his fur as he watched Darkrai desperately hug Dark Matter. He didn't like this, but still he waited.

He could see his teammates wearily watching as well. Skuntank had an attack ready, Mona was watching with hope in her eyes, while Ella stayed by Rai's side, hugging him with her ribbons. He could feel the comfort she was trying to give, and he appreciated it plenty.

It was hard to tell how Dark Matter— no, Simon was feeling without a face to read, but with the lack of attacks and the momentary peace, Rai knew he was hesitating.

Simon coiled up, multiple shouts rang through the void. Darkrai let out a sudden wheeze as a tendril from Dark Matter was now sticking through him. He gargled in pain as Dark Matter seemed to grow larger.

"No more! I'm not Simon! Simon is dead!"

"No!" Ella and Mona screamed.

"Oh for fuck's sake!" Skuntank snarled.

But Rai knew better. One of Darkrai's tendrils had also cut through Dark Matter. The being didn't seem to have any immediate reaction. He pushed himself away from Ella, and discharged every bit of electricity he had left onto the duo.

The attack hit, and both of them were consumed by fierce lightning. Dakrai's pained screams echoed around them, almost drowning out Dark Matter's hissing.

"Rai?! What are you doing?!" screamed Mona, the cresselia darting towards him. Ribbons shot out to hold her in place and Ella stared her down.

"Stop, Mona! Let Rai do this!" Ella cried, sounding torn herself. "I know how it looks, but I think they planned this."

Mona tried to protest, but her cries were drowned out by Darkrai's and Simon's. They all watched as Rai poured electricity into the creatures of darkness, watching them writhe and leak shadows that seemed to fade as it touched the space around them.

"Let… me… go!" Simon wailed. "I already weakened you. If you don't let go you'll die!"

"Th-That's my plan!" Darkrai cried, his voice croaking in pain. "We can go out together— we'll both be with Amy! We can… be a family again!"

"Stop!"

Darkrai's body convulsed against the dark orb. The very orb that was Simon dribbled. "I can't die! As long as there's negativity and fear, I'll live! I hate it!"

"We'll… work… hard!" Rai promised through clenched teeth as he paused his lightning attacks. "We'll tell everyone what happened! You won't need to be reborn!" He knew that he should continue his assault, but the more he watched, the more he knew he just couldn't bring himself to take another life. Darkrai and Simon had suffered so much. Why did they have to keep suffering…?

"You can't stop being negative! Those emotions are a part of everyone! Even me! Anything upsetting that happens creates more negativity and MORE sadness!"

The shadowy pool beneath them grew and grew, an accumulation of both of their bodies melting together. Darkrai's grip on Simon tightened. In the corner of his eye, Rai saw Mona start to glow.

"It's okay, Simon," Darkrai whispered. "It's okay to feel those things… we shouldn't be hiding those feelings. It doesn't help anyone… not even you."

"I…"

"You can stop now."

Rai heard Skuntank gasp, and he turned his head to see a burst of warm light that was starting to spread around the room. It started to approach Darkrai and Dark Matter, dispelling any of Dark Matter's tendrils that tried to strike out. Darkrai hissed as it got closer, he held his position, keeping his arms wrapped tightening around the darkness. And poking out of that darkness was a cracked, red core. The darkness was fading, and with it, Darkrai and Dark Matter were disappearing. The light enveloping them was eating away at their very beings.

The light dimmed some, showing Mona smiling softly at them. "Simon… Darkrai. It's okay. It's over… You can rest."

Darkrai's eyes softened, now finally getting a good, long look at the cresselia. "...Is that you, Amy?"

Cresselia shook her head. "I'm sorry. Amy died a long time ago… but… she misses you both, I can feel that, somehow."

"You're lying…" Simon croaked. "She…"

Darkrai sighed. "Come on, Simon. That's enough. Let's… Let's go see her now. Together. Do you trust me?"

"Will I stop being sad…?"

"You will," Rai promised. A long breath left him as he smiled. Darkrai was almost gone, and the red core in his arms was beginning to crumble. "As long as you're with Darkrai, you'll be okay."

"Raiden… everyone…" Darkrai said, voice faint. "I can feel that everything's starting to become undone. With the Legends' help… everything should be how it was, soon. It'll be for the best… I'm sorry for all we've done."

Skuntank squinted, then sighed. "I don't know if I can forgive you, but… thanks for not totally destroying everything, I suppose…"

"I'm sorry we didn't help," Mona said, shaking her head. "If we'd done things differently… none of this would have happened. I'm going to work hard from here on… there'll be no more Dark Matters. No more world-ending threats…"

Darkrai nodded and closed his eyes. "I hope that happens."

"Time to see Amy…"

"Rest well," Rai said, bowing his head. "It's been a long time… but it's over now. We'll make this world a home for everyone."

A final breath left Darkrai, and Mona's light enveloped them fully. Dark's Matter's core shattered completely, shards dissipating the moment that they touched the light. Darkrai had vanished, and both were gone completely.

They had won.

Mona's light died, and she fell against the ground with heavy breaths. Skuntank groaned and collapsed, and Raiden followed.

Everything ached, inside and out. Battle after battle after battle… and they'd won.

He wanted to sleep.

"Guys…?" Ella called, her voice finally ringing out. "It's Roger, he-"

Adrenaline gripped Raiden as he crawled to his feet. Mona had found the strength to levitate for a better look, and even Skuntank had gotten back up.

"What about him?!" Skuntank snapped.

"I'm awaaake…?" drawled a voice.

Rai moved faster. His heart was practically pounding in his chest. "Roger?! You're alive?!"

The whiscash's body had returned to his normal blue skin, and while he was still on the ground, Ella was already feeding him an oran berry from her bag. "Yeah… I am! Which means… you guys won?"

Skuntank grinned. "Hell yeah we won! Great to see you alive!" he cheered, nudging Roger's side. "And that means everyone else should be fine now, right?"

Mona smiled. "Yeah…" she said, a slight hint of sadness in her voice. "We won… and Simon and Darkrai can finally be at peace."

Rai smiled, feeling immense relief. Ella caught his smile and returned it with a tired grin, she'd picked up on the same thing. Magnum and everyone else would soon be okay.

Though… Darkrai and Dark Matter… was it okay to let things end like this? They could now rest, but… it didn't feel like anything was over quite yet. All that pain they'd endured… After the dreams he'd been having, Rai had some Legends to talk to. He knew what his next mission was.

"Yeah…" Raiden said softly. "Now… let's go home. We have a lot of work to do."
