Welcome to the world of Obleta!

    FAQ

    Q. What is this thread?

    A. This is a general info thread about the PMD setting Obleta, in preparation for the small RP campaigns I hope to run with it as a setting.

    Q. What is Obleta?

    A. Obleta is an original PMD world, heavily inspired by steampunk, Great Ace Attorney, and the concept of multiversal travel. Being a PMD world, it's a world without any native humans, with Pokemon and Pokemon-adjacent creatures instead being the dominant species.

    Q. Will our characters be human or Pokemon?

    A. You can submit characters of any species, though upon arrival to Obleta, they will become Pokemon for the duration of their stay there.

    Q. What's the general tone of Obleta?

    A. Obleta is a mostly lighthearted setting, though there's an undertone of underlying mystery, intrigue, and shady stuff going on behind the scenes. There's always a mystery to be solved, especially in the big cities. Sometimes, it's a small mystery. Maybe someone's kite got stolen, or a jewler lost some of their stock. Sometimes, it's more serious, like a murder. It's a big, wide world in an even bigger, wider multiverse.

    Q. What's the current year in Obleta?

    A. 1899

This FAQ will be updated with more info as people ask more questions.

Glad you asked! Here's a general map of Obleta, made by my friend Sudmensch!

    obleta-min.png

Obleta has a wide variety of locations and environments, from scenic and pristine nature, to mysterious and dangerous mystery dungeons, to the steam-filled and bustling cities, and even more. There's no shortage of locations to explore.

There will be plenty to see and do, and it won't be limited to just one place.

Excerpt from an academic journal in Obleta

On the subject of Humans in Obleta

With the rise of multiversal travel, a serious issue has arose in our world.

Humans, while not native to our reality, have a number of myths and legends existing about them, such as their ability to grant wishes, the power of their bonds with Pokemon, and the strength of their hearts.

Unfortunately, this has caused many of the unscrupulous sort to begin kidnapping humans from their worlds, and bringing them here to Obleta, in the hopes they can seize a human's power. This flagrant abuse of a person's rights is despicable.

Thankfully, it seems many people agree. Several guilds now have programs for finding stolen humans, and bringing them back to their home worlds.

Even with guilds' help, though, it seems some humans have been stranded in our world, and it saddens me to learn that these fascinating, wonderful creatures are being treated this way.

Excerpt from a tourism pamphlet in Obleta

...Summer Continent boasts a wide variety of sensational sensations, such as the following:

    - Lake Goblet, a lake suspended high above the ground in a goblet-like rock formation. Its history is as rich as its current proprietor, Ernest, who provide tours of the lake for a modest fee.

    - Filter Peak, atop which rests the scenic Filter Village, where Shaymins reside. While their culture typically demands that only someone invited by a Shaymin can enter the village, the mountain itself is free for all to explore.

    - Human Park, a theme park themed around the fascinating creatures that are humans! For humans visiting, think of it as a slice of home away from home, and to Pokemon, learn all about humans!

    - Limestone Forest, a petrified forest from countless years ago. The trees here are preserved in stone for all time, making it a fascinating sight. As it is a mystery dungeon, an escort is recommended if you are not adept at combat or exploration.

Excerpt from a letter in Obleta
    Dear [Name smudged beyond readibility],

My trip to the Winter Continent went wonderfully, I'm glad you asked! The technology they have there is incredible, yet so different from our own. They harness the power of mystery dungeons to create things called "magnagates", which can not only create a temporary mystery dungeon bridging two places, but they can also interface with one of their other great inventions, the Layers.

Some architects in Winter have discovered a way to build four-dimensionally, across seven layers. A room can look completely differently between each layer, and can drastically reduce the size of structures, and the layers can be traversed using a magnagate. They've practically solved the need for construction space over there!

I hope I can see you soon.

    Regards, [Name smudged beyond readibility]

    Automatons
A unique aspect of Obleta is that, alongside regular Pokemon, there's also **automatons**, machines in the shape of Pokemon. They have the sapience and capabilities of non-mechanical Pokemon, so they can walk, talk, and are citizens of Obleta like any other Pokemon.

Each automaton has a Z-Crystal that powers them and gives them life, though they still need fuel to function, such as coal.

Automatons are created by other Pokemon for a variety of purposes, whether that be companionship, needing an extra worker, populating a newly established town, and many more reasons.

Automatons also, at least in the vast majority of Obleta, share the same rights as non-mechanical Pokemon, though the Monsoon Continent is a notable exception.

There are several "versions" of automatons, developed as the technology became better. The current version is Mk. VIII. The first two versions, Mk. I and Mk. II, are the subject of much debate, as they were more akin to a particularly smart animal than a sapient Pokemon.

There are also rumors about a "Mk. 0", prototypes that existed before the official Mk. Is.

Here's a version log of all the known automaton versions to date, along with the colloquial terms for each version.

Mk. 0 "Genesis" - It is unknown if this version truly exists.
Mk. I "Gear" - Clunky, slow, and not quite sapient, but functional. They have the intellect of an average dog. Originally created to help adventuring teams with venturing into mystery dungeons.
Mk. II "Furnace" - The first batch able to use moves, these automaton were created for more advanced and difficult mystery dungeons. A bit more intelligent than Mk Is.
Mk. III "Pory" - The first automatons with the intellect of an average Obletan, were not treated as citizens at first, but after protests, have the same rights as any other Pokemon on Obleta.
Mk. IV "Equal" - These automatons were the first created since automatons were given the same rights as other Pokemon. Now more closely resembling existing Pokemon, these automatons were the peak of technology for the time.
Mk. V "Sturdy" - "Sturdy bodies, sturdy minds" was the motto for these automatons. More efficient, and with better construction, these were built to last as long as they could without repairs.
Mk. VI "Ultra" - This version was fitted with Ultra shields, allowing them to survive the desolation of Ultra Space. Now automaton could traverse the beyond, provided they had a way of getting there.
Mk. VII "Generation" - Upon demand of automaton who wished to have family, this batch was the first to have child automaton. While previously there was almost exclusively automatons of fully evolved Pokemon, this version included child, teen, and adult Pokemon at approximately equal rates.
Mk. VIII "Sustain" - The current version of automaton in production. With the ability to continue running for a bit if they lose their Z-crystal, and perform basic repairs on themselves, these models are purportedly able to self-sustain longer than any prior model.
