First Night as a Pokemon
“...and you can sleep in here,” Tina said as she led Theo to a small room with a pile of…hay?“Have you just had that pile of hay here the whole time?” the Zorua tilted his head. “And is it normal to sleep on hay here?” Theo began to feel a little worried as he noticed a look of offense growing on Tina’s face.
“Hay? This is straw, everyone knows you can’t sleep comfortably on hay!” Tina exclaimed. “And for your information, no that hasn't been here the whole time! I bought this while we were in town earlier, and set it up while you were staring at the garden outside,” She huffed.
“O-oh, uh, sorry, I didn’t mean to offend you,” Theo apologized. “Thank you once again for giving me a place to stay,” He quickly added, hoping to change the topic.
“Don’t worry about it!” Tina said, the Vulpix returning to her previously cheerful demeanor. “But don’t forget the deal we made.”
“I know, I know. If I want to stay here, I have to form an exploration team with you. I got it,” Theo sighed, both surprised and relieved that Tina calmed down so quickly.
“Great! Well then I’ll see you tomorrow, don’t sleep in too long. And if you need anything, just knock on my door, it's at the end of the hall.” Tina walked out the door of the small room, quickly vanishing from sight.
“Goodnight to you too,” Theo mumbled as he laid down on the pile of straw. “Maybe this is just a weird dream, and I’ll wake up in my bed tomorrow…”
“This is all still very real,” The voice from before piped up.
“No, it’s not real. I’m going to wake up at home, without this weird Zorua body, in a place where Pokemon don’t talk, without an annoying voice in my head.” Theo shifted around on the straw.
“You can’t deny th-” The voice began.
“I can and I will. Now shut up and let me sleep,” Theo mumbled as he curled himself up. After a minute or two of silence, only broken when he brushed straw away from his face, he finally drifted off to sleep.
Adjusting to a Non-Bipedal Body
The first rays of sunlight shone through the window of the guest room, illuminating the lone figure who lay on a pile of straw in its center.
Theo yawned as he felt the light shine on his face as he slowly pushed himself up. Eyes half open he tried to stand up and stretch. He reached up to brush some straw off of his shoulder, then-
THUD! RUSTLE!
The zorua found himself face-down on the ground, now covered in the straw that he had slept on.
“Do you believe this is more than a dream now?” A familiar voice echoed in Theo’s head.
“Shut up…” Theo groaned as he pushed himself back up. “Why could I move with ease yesterday?”
“I was able to take a small amount of control over your body in order to move it to your will.”
“So you were controlling me?”
“Yes. According to what I’ve learned from looking through your head, this is the part where you thank me for helping you,” The voice stated in a matter-of-fact tone.
“You were looking through my head? What the hell man, ever heard of privacy?” Theo shouted as he went to take a step forward, stumbling and falling once again.
“Yes, the idea of privacy was very present in your mind and I am now very aware of it.”
“Then respect mine and get out of my head!” Theo struggled back to his feet, wobbling as he tried to approach the door of the room.
“Even if I wanted to, I cannot. This body is shared between us, but I can do very little beyond simple physical assistance currently. Since I can’t walk around the world, I simply walk around your mind instead.”
“I don’t care, just stop telling me about it!” Theo took careful steps forward in an attempt to keep his balance.
“Would you like help moving?” The voice asked.
“No, I can do it myself,” Theo answered, voice laced with annoyance.
After a few more minutes of falling, Theo finally relented.
“Alright, I give up. Please help me until I can get the hang of this,” Theo groaned, once again pushing himself up off the ground.
“Gladly,” The voice said.
Almost immediately after the voice replied, Theo’s body began to move with ease as he finally reached the door. He reached up to grab the doorknob with his paw and-
“I don’t have hands.” Theo mumbled as he looked at his paws, as the realization that he lacked opposable thumbs -and fingers in general- quickly dawned on him. “So uh, what do we do?” Theo asked, hoping the guide in his head would answer.
“I… wish I had an answer. The concept of “doors” is new to me.”
“Well crud.”
A Conversation after fighting an Outlaw
“We… we did it?” the Treeko’s breath was shaky as he looked at the unconscious Drowzee in front of him.
“We won!” the Eevee next to him jumped with joy. “See Aeron, I told you we had nothing to worry about!”
“Yeah… yeah, I guess you were right Nova,” Aeron sighed softly. “There was nothing to worry about.”
“Y’know, it was your intuition that led us here in the first place. Cheer up! Zoey is safe, and we just completed our first bounty mission. No need to look so gloomy!” Nova beamed.
“I’m not gloomy! Just, uh, lost in thought.” Aeron replied. “I mean, we won, sure, but something feels off. This happened before, differently, and no one remembers it. I wasn’t a Treeko before. We didn’t win before.” Aeron’s mind was racing as he pondered the predicament. “And last time, I didn’t survive.”
