Summary:
Jessie, James, and Meowth became heroes of the Wobbu Palooza festival. They just had to break a dumb rule to defeat the troublemakers, subsequently leading the Team Rocket trio to be banned from the festival.
What if, instead, the villagers had accepted Jessie, James, and Meowth as newcomers to the Wobbu Palooza?
Notes:
A fic I wrote back in 2023, my very first attempt at a Pokémon episode rewrite, and also the first work I ever completed. I have already posted it on AO3 (link at the end of the message, if you're interested in leaving kudos), and here, on Thousand Roads, I post it. Enjoy!
Single Chapter
••••• Ending 1 •••••
As the fighting Pokémon group led by Pretty Boy, Greaser, and Red Spikes attacked the giant Wobbuffet sculpture, Jessie, James, and Meowth watched from nearby bushes, surprised that the festival-goers weren’t intervening by choice.
After discussing whether to step in and defend the festival symbol, they ultimately decided to do so. To do that, they had to use their own Pokémon, despite the festival rule prohibiting Pokémon battles.
Jessie’s Wobbuffet was the key in defeating the troublemakers, earning the gratitude of the citizens and making Ash and his friends widen their eyes and gape.
However, Jessie, James, and Meowth’ decision to break the no-Pokémon battles rule could not be overlooked.
“While you three did a great job protecting the festival symbol, you also broke the primary tradition of the festival, which is a serious offense.” Jenny scolded the trio.
Jessie hung her head. "We know we shouldn't have broken the rules," she said.
James clenched his fists. "We let our emotions get the best of us," he said, his voice filled with remorse.
Meowth looked down at his paws. "We messed up," he mumbled.
Jenny sighed. "I understand your desire to protect the festival, but it's important to do so while respecting its rules."
The trio nodded in agreement. "We'll do better next time."
With that, they prepared to leave in their balloon, hoping to one day return and participate in the festival as honorable citizens.
Before the balloon even left the ground, Lulu shouted, “Wait! Don’t leave yet! Please, Jenny, they've done so much for us already! They've protected our festival symbol and helped us drive out those troublemakers. Can't we show them some kindness in return?"
Jenny looked at Lulu thoughtfully with a hand on her own chin. Jessie, James, and Meowth had indeed been a great help to the town, and it seemed unfair to kick them out so soon.
After a moment of hesitation, Jenny finally nodded. “You're right, Lulu. They can stay for a few more days," she said, much to Jessie, James, and Meowth’ joy.
"Thank you so much, Jenny!" said James, his eyes filling with tears. "We'll make sure to make the most of our time here and show our gratitude in any way we can."
Jessie, her Wobbuffet, and Meowth nodded in agreement, tears flowing through their faces.
A few seconds later, Ash, Misty, and Brock approached Jessie, James, and Meowth. There was no hostility in their looks, only loose postures and wide smiles.
"We never thought we'd see the day where you three would become heroes!" said Ash with a grin.
Jessie rolled her eyes. "Don't get too used to it," she said with a smirk. "We'll be back to our villainous ways as soon as the festival is over."
Misty laughed. "Well, I guess we'll enjoy it while it lasts then."
James nodded in agreement. "But for now, we're happy to have been able to protect the festival and make a difference."
Meowth added, "We're thankful for having met all of you and for being able to rest from our usual villainy.”
“Woo-buffet!” Said Jessie’s Wobbuffet in a cheerful tone.
“Pika-Pikachu!” Added Pikachu enthusiastically.
Everyone shared a laugh, enjoying the moment of camaraderie and teamwork. Though they knew that they would continue as enemies later, they couldn't help but feel grateful for the time they were spending together and the good they were able to accomplish.
Lulu still looked worriedly at the damaged giant Wobbuffet structure, saying, “What will we do after the damage those troublemakers caused to the festival symbol?”
After some time thinking, Ash approached her with a big smile.
"I have an idea," he said. "What if we use this damage to make the festival even better? Hear me out."
Ash explained his plan, and everyone listened intently. It would require everyone's help, even from Jessie, James, and Meowth.
At first, Lulu was hesitant, but the enthusiasm from the group was contagious, and soon she was convinced. Everyone else also looked to be convinced. Together, they set out to make Ash's plan a reality.
They worked tirelessly for the rest of the day, but it was worth it. When the festival reopened at night, the giant Wobbuffet structure had been transformed into a stunning work of art. There were many mini Wobbuffet structures around the giant one. The townspeople marveled at the creativity and effort that had gone into the new design.
Jessie, James, and Meowth were amazed by what they saw, and even they had to admit that it was a great improvement on the original structure. Ash beamed with pride as he looked around at the happy faces of his friends and the villagers.
Jessie, James, and Meowth were enjoying the festival with Ash, Misty, and Brock, trying different foods and playing games.
"This is such a great festival!" exclaimed Misty.
"Thanks to you guys, it's even better," added Ash.
Jessie smiled. "I never thought we could have so much fun with you guys." she said.
James nodded in agreement. "Yeah, we've always been on opposite sides. It's nice to have a break from that," he said.
Meowth chimed in, "I can't believe we're having fun with twerps like youse!"
Brock chuckled. "Hey, we may be twerps, but we know how to have a good time," he said.
As they continued to enjoy the festival together, they realized that despite their past differences, they could still come together and have fun. It clearly was a heartwarming moment for everyone involved.
••••••••••
As the night progressed, the excitement from the festival began to die down. The other people were already going back to their homes, and the group of the Team Rocket trio and the young trainers decided to call it a night.
"Good night, everyone," said Ash, yawning.
"Sleep well, Ash," replied Misty, as she also settled down in her sleeping bag.
Brock gave a small nod of agreement, "Yeah, we have an early start tomorrow. Good night, guys."
"Good night, everyone," said Jessie, as she closed her eyes.
"Sleep tight," added James, already drifting off.
Meowth curled up next to them, "Good night, everyone. Sweet dreams."
With that, the group fell into a peaceful sleep, ready for whatever adventures the next day would bring.
••••• Ending 2 •••••
It was noon when Jessie, James, and Meowth reopened their eyes, their sweet smiles soon fading away. They glanced at each other, all nodding in acknowledgment —nothing of that really happened, and their neutral gazes reinforced their shredded acceptance. Of course, their subconscious told them something like that daydream would never happen, regardless of how good it was.
Still, Jessie rubbed her eyes and sighed. "Why didn’t it actually take place ? Everything was so perfect!"
James nodded sadly. "Yeah, we were all getting along so well. And we were heroes, even if it was just in our dreams!"
Meowth let out a disappointed groan. "Yeah, n’ we still stuck as Team Rocket, chasing after Pikachu day after day. Why can't we catch a brea-"
As he said that, Jessie, James, and Meowth heard stepping noises coming from their side. Looking there, they saw a group of teenagers running towards them, all holding small food boxes. A Pikachu was close to the group, which could only mean one thing: the twerps.
“What are you twerps doing here?” Jessie snarled as she, James, and Meowth got up from the ground and looked at the running young trainers with narrowed eyes.
Misty frowned as the young trainers stopped in front of them. “Don't get any funny ideas. This doesn't mean we like you any better!" She said this as she, Ash, and Brock handed the small food boxes to Jessie, James, and Meowth.
The trio widened their eyes, glancing at the boxes, then back at Ash and his friends. “Wh-What?! Why…?” James asked.
“Well, it was Lulu’s idea to bring you food after you saved the festival.” Brock answered, stepping forward. “She prepared it especially for you, and even I must admit that her cooking skills are better than average.”
Ash’s eyes were fixed on the horizon, his head tilted. “Yeah, I gotta admit, I was surprised to see you saving the festival. But then, you tried to steal food from the same villagers… It simply doesn’t click.” He said, looking, with slight tears, into their eyes.
His Pikachu moved closer to him, his look neutral.
Jessie, James, and Meowth were already opening the food boxes, stopping to stare at Ash. “We…” Jessie began, a slight tear appearing in her eye. It vanished in the next second, though, her following words harsh. “We are from Team Rocket! Since when do all our actions have to correlate with the goodness?”
Brock shook his head. “Actions speak louder than words, Jessie, and willingness to help spoke volumes. We all know here that there's more to you than meets the eye."
James and Meowth nodded shyly, while Jessie sighed.
Ash looked into the horizon for a while before returning his eyes to Misty and Brock. “Well, we’ve got to continue our journey, and we've got a long way to go before the next town.” Ash said, a slight smile forming on his face. “Good luck with...whatever you're up to.”
"Yeah, we've got our own adventures to focus on.” Misty added in a rather dismissive tone. “Goodbye, Team Rocket.”
"And I have to say, that food won't stay fresh forever.” Brock said, giggling. “Take care, guys. See you around."
Jessie, James, and Meowth glanced at the food boxes for a few instants before looking back at the young trainers. “Goodbye, twerps.” Meowth sighed, waving his right paw.
“Thanks for the food.” James said, giving a thumbs up to them.
Ash and his friends turned around and began moving away from the trio. Pikachu jumped to Ash’s shoulder without a word.
As they were getting away, Jessie, James, and Meowth finally opened their food boxes, remembering the Wobbuffet festival in the last day. A festival that they had saved. The one of which they became heroes. Yet, the one they had attempted to steal the villagers’ food from, only to fill their own bellies!
And still, it seemed to be a reasonable attitude. It had to be! They couldn’t just let themselves be kicked out for free! Even heroes deserved some food, and perhaps even rule-breaking heroes like them deserved to be in the festival!
It just isn’t fair!
A few tears form in each one of the trio’s eyes, threatening to fall through their cheeks. In another world, Jessie, James, and Meowth could’ve lived in the Wobbuffet village. They knew it! Its villagers just had to accept that the trio had to break the rules to protect the festival. They just had to be a tad more compassionate towards Jessie, James, and Meowth…
…but it was just a dream, perhaps nothing else.
"Maybe someday we'll have a chance to be heroes for real," James said in a partially cheerful tone, attempting to break the ice.
"Or maybe we'll catch Pikachu and become famous for that," Jessie joked, her mood gradually lightening up.
Meowth shook his head. "Nah, I'd rather be heroes. That dream was too good to give up on."
One of Jessie’s Poké balls pops open, revealing Wobbuffet. “Woo-buffet!” It cheered them up while they started eating the food that Ash and his friends left to them.
After Jessie, James, Meowth, and Wobbuffet finished eating, they all sighed and immediately went back to their usual routine as Team Rocket agents, but the memory of their dream lingered in their minds. They couldn't help but feel disappointed that it wasn't real, but they still hoped that someday, they would be able to leave their villainy behind and earn the respect that they’ve always wanted from other people.
Or was it just another dream?
