It's been three years since I officially posted Pokémon Crossing: Fly Me to the Moon on AO3 :quag:

So I figured, let's throw some lore here and take questions about the series

This is a list of things that were in the original draft before posting the final versions on TR/AO3/FF.net

CHARACTERS

* Tank originally wasn't going to be a Grass-type specialist, he was going to have a Goh-style team that rotates most of his members except for his Sceptile. Poochyena was going to be a big part of said team, but the whole rotating cast concept was discarded after my family dog died in 2021 (I had plans to name said Poochyena after the dog). I also got more inspired by Bloodliners from the fanfic Reset Bloodlines, and decided "Hey, Tank's got hair that looks like a leaf, he should be a Grass-type specialist because Hoenn doesn't have one!"

* Benedict's original motivation to become Champion was inspired after his dad's attempts at the Pokémon League. At the end of the story, Benedict was fated to battle his own father (an original character I named Mornay, after a variation on eggs benedict) as his first post-Champion battle. Eventually, Mornay was retconned to be a total deadbeat, as Benedict was tooled more from "standard shonen protagonist" to being Joestar-coded, along with battling for his own sake rather than living up to a failure.

* All three of the boys (Benedict, Kidd, and Tank) were going to be more rambunctious assholes compared to the more snarky yet sweet dynamic they have together. The boys were going to get themselves in more trouble, such as sneaking into an onsen to find a Gym Leader. I decided "Yeah, people are totally going to root for a bunch of dicks who only care about themselves and their selfish wants."

* The original antagonist of the entire story was going to be Brutus, an urban legend glitch villager from the GameCube days. His motivation was to start a species war in Hoenn, being a Chaotic Evil that wants to tear apart societies just for kicks. Part of his team included Pokémon from other regions, to the point I had considered a Mega Mewtwo as his ace. I eventually realized "Hey this is taking away from Hoenn's charms". While he still appears in the story, he's relegated to being the villain of another story, notably, one of the major allies' past. Like the actual villain, he was two-timing both Cottage and Pastel behind the scenes, but is now working alone.

* Frank and Apollo were only going to be first cousins, but I saw that their relationship was more brotherly than anything, so I retconned them to be half-brothers instead. They also weren't going to appear in the main series as much, but I really enjoyed writing both of them so they ended up appearing in more chapters than planned. I tend to enjoy older 'mentor' figures along with Champions who actively fight against any threats in the region, which is why they have a larger presence than planned.

PLOT POINTS

* While Fortree City was always destined to be the place of tragedy (with a ransacking and character death), part of who was involved was retooled accordingly. Midge was initially planned to be the Flying-type Gym Leader, before I decided on Celia instead due to a cuter character design and plans for character connections. Midge wasn't going to die in the Fortree incident, rather, her mother was going to be the victim. To flesh out Tank's connections to Fortree City, I changed it so Leopold (the previous Gym Leader) was fated to die. This was because I liked the idea of Fortree City not initially being a Flying-type gym.

* When Pastel and Cottage were initially written as "not!Rocket", I had plans for them to kidnap any Pokémon they could get their hands on. One chapter had them kidnap a Swablu and Bagon, who Benedict and Kidd would catch as part of their teams. (The plan was for Benedict to claim Bagon due to Salamence's sheer power, and Kidd with Altaria for its graceful contest performances, but both got the other one instead). I split up their chapters instead so both Coffret (Swablu) and Scorpio (Bagon) would get their own limelight chapters.

Since I have a lot written down for these two villainous factions, let's get into how I developed them! :quag:

INSPIRATION

Because I picked the Hoenn region for the setting, it's more than appropriate that I'd include one of my favorite elements of the region; having two teams at war! It also allows me to use more villagers through the story, since one of my plans was always to include every single villager in some capacity.

The names Cottage and Pastel, unsurprisingly, come from online aesthetic movements. With the Animal Crossing series, making an aesthetically pleasing town/island became a bigger priority in the "New" games (that being New Leaf and New Horizons, respectively). This is due to more customization options. While New Leaf was the first game I played, I was one of the players that focused more on hanging out with my villagers than decorating my house or town to look absolutely perfect. Once New Horizons came around, I definitely ended up focusing on decoration/renovation, while I'd end up not doing much with my villagers.

The parts about personally picking new recruits rather than letting anyone join? That part's a reference to the Animal Crossing amiibo cards, where the player can pick any villagers they want (want a pink all-normal island? all cats or bunnies or deer? Bring it on!) rather than like the older games, where villager choices are random (this ties into my boys too, since Benedict, Kidd and Tank were all villagers I had randomly in my first New Leaf town, and I got attached to those little guys!)

VILLAGER SPECIES AT PLAY

I picked Dobie and Judy as the leaders since both villagers fit their respective aesthetics (Dobie and his woodsy forest look, Judy and her flashy colorful 'kawaii' appeal), their species coming into play (the most aggressive bears are mothers whose cubs are in danger, and Judy sees herself as a maternal figure to her underlings, like Mom from Futurama) (the whole dynamic with wolves as predators and the "alpha wolf" archetype), and villager personalities seen as antagonistic (the snarky aloof cranky, the uppity gossipy nature of snooties) and mesh against each other. I also happen to ship Maxie/Archie in a mutually toxic dynamic, so Judy and Dobie would end up as exes at war.

As for the admins... Beau and Fauna were both picked because deer are prominent in the cottagecore movement, and are typically seen as cutesy harmless animals despite bucks fighting with their antlers over does. I had considered rabbits joining Cottage, but the Killer Rabbit angle is more fun to explore with deer than rabbits. As for why they're both deer? Let's just say that species plays a big part in Dobie's vision (exploring the darker aspects of cottagecore adopted by....unsavory people)

Julian and Filbert were picked since their pastel blue colors complement Judy's pink color scheme. Species isn't as important to Judy, and I picked two villagers I happened to like. Julian himself is primarily based on Dorian Red Gloria (the protagonist of From Eroica with Love), due to his pretty looks, ruthlessness, and obsession with someone who isn't romantically interested back. Filbert is an "only sane man" whose more level-headed compared to the exaggerated camp. Pastels as an aesthetic can be needlessly toxic, which is why everyone wears purple!

I also picked villagers that happened to be fairly popular, since good antagonists should be compelling enough rather than something for the obstacle to stomp down. This is why Judy's friendship with Julian and Filbert is genuine, even beyond their roles as ecoterrorists. Also, Judy as one of the new faces of New Horizons is why I picked her in particular for a team leader rather than an older villager like, say, Marina or Rosie.

There are several lines tossed around about the major trio not being Pastel or Cottage material. This is because of their status as "plain" villagers (not infamously ugly, not excessively cute, kinda just there), so no chance of them betraying each other any time soon :mewlulz:
