This is a separate project from my other unpublished wip fanfic, Guided By The Unknown (aka the one with Sequo and the Voice) with no connections to that one. For criticism, keep in mind I'm still somewhat of a beginner so it may not be the best or the longest, nobody is perfect when starting out. But now, it's time to start the fanfic!

Chapter 1

I opened my eyes, seeing a place I didn’t recognize. I appeared to be in a small clearing in between trees, and as I looked around, I did not know where I was. In fact, I did not remember anything about how I ended up here, where I was, or even who I was.

I walked through an opening in between the trees, soon seeing a small town nearby. The place was a lush and somewhat forested area, with occasional patches of snow. Based on the fact there was a bit of snow but it wasn’t that cold, I could assume it was somewhere in spring.

As I reached the town, I noticed an old-looking man wearing a scientific-looking lab coat. I entered the town through the trees and walked up to the man, asking him:

“Hey there, do you happen to know where we are right now?”

“This place is known as Twinleaf town, a small town in the region of Sinnoh.”

At least I now had an idea as to where I was, and although I did not remember hearing of a place called the Sinnoh region or Twinleaf town, at least it put me in a slightly better position of knowledge than before.

“Thank you, kind stranger.”

“You may just call me Rowan. I am a professor, researching pokemon evolution.”

“Alright then, nice to meet you, Professor Rowan.”

“What might your name be?”

“You see, I don’t remember. I’ve lost all of my memories for some reason”

“Intriguing. I suppose I could help you try to regain them.”

Rowan seemed like a friendly person despite his stoic exterior, and now he was considering helping me regain my memories. Maybe he could eventually help me know who I was and why I was in this unfamiliar place.

“What would you get from the deal?”

“You can help me with a project of mine called the Pokedex.”

“And what might that be?”

“It’s an encyclopedia that gathers information on pokemon.”

While I was a bit hesitant on helping a stranger, I didn’t really have much of a choice. This could be the only way for me to gain my memories back and figure out who I was.

“Sounds like a good deal to me.”

“Tell me, do you have a partner pokemon?”

“No, I don’t have one.”

“I suppose I can give you one if you so wish.”

Rowan opened his suitcase, revealing three spherical objects that were red and white with a dividing line in the middle.

“What are those?”

“These are known as Pokeballs. Each of them contains a pokemon inside.”

First, Rowan sent out a pokemon from the pokeball on the right side of the suitcase. It was a turtle-like pokemon with a small leaf on its head.

“This is the grass type pokemon, Turwig.”

Next, Rowan sent out another pokemon from the pokeball in the middle. It was a monkey-like pokemon with a small flame on its tail.

“This is the fire type pokemon, Chimchar.”

Last, Rowan sent out a pokemon from the pokeball on the right. It was a penguin-like pokemon with small patterns resembling droplets of water.

“This is the water type pokemon, Piplup.”

“Are these… for me?”

“Indeed. You may choose one of them to start off your journey.”

I looked at the three pokemon, and in the end, I decided to choose the fiery monkey pokemon. The choice was a difficult one, as all of them seemed like good picks, but I knew I could only pick one.

“I choose Chimchar.”

“Very well. Come to Sandgem town on the next route, my lab is over there.”

That was a user whose account was compromised and used to spam--sorry they ended up in your story thread!

A pretty classic start to a trainerfic here, although the amnesia wrinkle almost gives it some PMD vibes. I gotta say, Rowan's a dick for responding to someone going "I have a serious medical condition" with "cool, I'll help you with that, but only if you do this thing for me first," lol.

Curious where you'll go with this one, since the opening is pretty similar to a lot of journeyfics. Those fic tags are intriguing, though! I'm guessing the MC is Volo, then? You could definitely do some fun things with that. Hope you have fun with this fic!

Chapter 2

As I walked through the tall grass on the route known as Route 201 and battled the occasional wild pokemon on the way, I attempted to remember who I was and how I ended up here. However, it was to no avail, as I couldn’t remember anything.

At the end of the route, there was another small town, this time it was close to a sandy beach. I felt the calm breeze of the sea nearby, and while the place was unfamiliar, at least it was a calming place. This was most likely Sandgem town, the one Rowan had told me about.

“Welcome to Sandgem town. My lab is over here, follow me.”

As I entered the lab, I saw a huge amount of scientific machinery I had never seen before. Or maybe I had and I didn’t remember, it wasn’t like I had any idea as to what my life was like before I had lost my memories.

Inside the lab, there was someone else as well, it was a young girl with black hair and a light pink outfit. The girl looked at me with a slightly confused look before asking Rowan:

“Who is this guy and why is he here?”

“Calm down, Dawn. He doesn’t remember who he is or why he is here, but I volunteered to help him regain his memories in return for a bit of help on the pokedex.”

“Are you really going to just trust a stranger like that?”

“There’s no need to be so rude. We’re just helping him, that’s all.”

“Fine. But don’t blame me if he turns out to be from Team Galactic or something like that.”

I had no clue what Team Galactic was, but based on the way the girl named Dawn was talking about them, it was somewhat easy to assume they weren’t good or trustworthy people.

I took a look at the small mirror next to me. In the mirror, I saw what was quite obviously my own reflection. I was a blonde-haired man with gray eyes and a blue and yellow outfit.

“Well, since Rowan seems to trust you, I’ll need to introduce myself to you now. My name is Dawn, I am Rowan’s assistant. Together, we study pokemon evolution.”

“Nice to meet you, Dawn. I would tell you my name if I remembered it, but that isn’t really the case.”

“I need to go now, the champion is on TV. You may follow me if you’d like.”

Chapter 3

I watched the TV alongside Dawn and Rowan. Despite its name, it clearly had no connection to the pokemon Eevee, instead, it looked like a box with a moving picture on it. Apparently that was a normal thing that I just didn’t remember. But then again, I didn’t remember anything.

The TV showed a woman with long blonde hair, gray eyes and a sleek black dress. She said:

“I will not be available for champion battles tomorrow due to me visiting my friend Rowan in Sandgem town.”

Dawn’s reaction appeared to be one of surprise and slight shock.

“Did you hear that, Rowan? The champion’s visiting us tomorrow!”

“Indeed. Now, stranger, do you have anywhere to stay?”

I thought about it for a moment, before realizing the answer was no. I did not have anywhere to stay, and that was a problem. Especially because it was starting to get dark outside.

“No, not really…”

“Well, then, would you like to stay here for the night? If you don’t have anywhere else to go.”

Dawn seemed annoyed by Rowan’s response.

“Are you serious? Are you really going to let this random stranger live with us?”

“I can recognize this man is sincere with his words. We’ll let him stay.”

“Fine…”

The next morning, I woke up. I noticed someone else inside the lab, it was the same woman that was shown on TV. The woman was talking with Rowan about something, I got closer to hear the conversation better. The woman asked Rowan:

“So, how’s your research going on the Phione I gave you?”

“I have not found the correct conditions for it to evolve into Manaphy yet.”

“That’s a shame.”

The woman turned her gaze at me, asking calmly:

“Who is this guy?”

“He is a mysterious person we found. He appears to have lost his memories and we’re trying to help him get those memories back.”

“How intriguing. I can help him as well, I do not know why but I can sense great potential in him.”

“Are you saying you want him to take on the league?”

“He has potential to become a strong trainer. Taking on the gyms and the league could help amplify that potential.”

Dawn showed up, replying with:

“Are you kidding me? Even a kid with only a single Kricketot could be a better champion than a stranger who doesn’t even know his own name!”

“There’s no need to be so rude, Dawn. Besides, as a champion, who does and doesn’t challenge the league is mostly up to me.”

I finally responded with my own question:

“Who is she?”

“She is Cynthia, the champion of the Sinnoh region.”

“Indeed, I am. Nice to meet you. I’ll show you some of the basics of being a pokemon trainer.”

Chapter 4

Outside the lab on the nearby route, Cynthia gave me a couple of pokeballs and asked me:

“So, do you know how to catch a pokemon?”

“Well, I can try…”

“Sounds good. There’s a Budew nearby, do you want to try to catch that?”

Following Cynthia’s request, I walked through the tall grass until I noticed a small plant-like pokemon called Budew. I sneaked behind it and threw a pokeball straight at it. After I threw the pokeball, it shook once, then twice, but then, the Budew escaped. Cynthia simply replied with:

“That’s not how it works. You cannot just sneak behind the pokemon and throw a pokeball, you need to weaken it first in battle.”

“Alright then, I guess I’ll do it that way.”

I found the Budew again and this time, I immediately sent out Chimchar, preparing for a battle.

“Go, Chimchar! Use Ember!”

The Chimchar created a flame and sent it towards the Budew, immediately knocking it out. Cynthia replied with:

“You shouldn’t knock it out immediately, you just need to weaken it a little.”

“Sure thing!”

I noticed another Budew nearby, and this time, I would try to hold back in order to catch it.

“Chimchar, use Scratch!”

The Chimchar used a basic but effective claw attack aimed at the Budew. The attack weakened it enough to be caught but not too much. I threw the pokeball, it shook once, then twice, then finally a third time. I had caught the Budew.

“Great job, mysterious stranger!”

“Thanks.”

At least I now had more pokemon on my team than before, maybe this could help me in my gym challenge or throughout my quest to get back my lost memories. And maybe, just maybe, I could be able to become the champion of the Sinnoh region and get my memories back.

Chapter 5

It had been some time since I had caught the Budew. I had now entered a large city with huge buildings and futuristic scenery. I walked along the busy streets that were crowded with people peacefully walking alongside their pokemon, when I bumped into someone. That someone was Cynthia.

“I’m sorry for- wait, what are you doing here?”

“Oh, hi there! How’s your journey going?”

“It’s going pretty well. Both Chimchar and Budew seem to be growing stronger.”

“That’s great to hear! I feel like you might be able to defeat a gym soon.”

“A gym?”

“It’s a place where trainers test out their battling capabilities against strong trainers.”

I was intrigued by the prospect of battling a powerful trainer as a test of my skills. However, there was one problem. I had not battled against a weak trainer yet, let alone a strong one. Because of that, I replied with:

“Maybe I could use some practice before that, like battling a weaker trainer first.”

“Yeah, that would be quite useful.”

Since Cynthia seemed to be a powerful trainer according to what I’d heard, she most likely wasn’t a great choice for my first opponent unless she held back. She seemed to recognize this as well, saying:

“I’d probably be too powerful for your first opponent. Maybe you should battle someone other than me.”

“That would be a good idea.”

Right as I said that, I noticed Dawn sitting on a nearby bench. Then, a realization came to me. Maybe I could have a battle with Dawn. Cynthia seemed to think the same, walking up to Dawn and saying:

“Hi there, Dawn. Would you like to battle our friend now that he’s here?”

“First of all, he’s your friend but not ours, but a battle could be nice. I want both him and you to realize he’s not as strong as you think he is.”
After we had found a decent battling area nearby, it was finally time to test my skills against Dawn. I wanted her to know that overconfidence would only lead to losing.

“Go, Starly!”
Dawn sent out a small, bird-like pokemon known as Starly.

“Go, Budew! Use Magical Leaf!”

As I sent out my own Budew, it attacked with leaves that were imbued with whimsical energy. That attack hit the Starly, doing some damage but not enough to knock it out.

“Starly, use Wing Attack!”

The Starly flew close to the Budew, attacking it with its wing and dealing enough damage to knock it out in one attack. It was all up to Chimchar now.

“Go, Chimchar! Use Ember!”

The Chimchar unleashed a small flame from its mouth, dealing quite a bit of damage to the Starly and almost knocking it out.

“Starly, use Quick Attack!”

The Starly attacked with a swift dash, not giving the Chimchar enough time to dodge the attack. However, I was not about to give up, and neither was Chimchar.

“Chimchar, use Flame Wheel!”

The Chimchar sent a blast of fire in a wheel-shaped attack, and as the wheel slammed into the Starly, it was finally knocked out. However, Dawn still had one pokemon remaining.

“Go, Turtwig! Use Razor Leaf!”

Dawn sent out the same turtle pokemon I had seen alongside Professor Rowan. As it attacked Chimchar with a bunch of sharp leaves, Chimchar was only barely not knocked out. Then, I felt something awakening in Chimchar. It was a newfound surge of power, and it felt strong enough to maybe knock out Turtwig once and for all.

“Chimchar! Use Flame Wheel!”

The newly powered up attack was in fact strong enough to defeat Turtwig. Cynthia watched me with a surprised look on her face, reacting with:

“Chimchar’s Blaze ability… It powers up Chimchar’s fire moves when it’s in a tight situation. A powerful strategy indeed.”

Dawn’s reaction was a mix of surprise and dissatisfaction as she replied with:

“Fine. You defeated me just this one time, but you becoming the new champion is still about as likely as a Diglett flying.”

Cynthia laughed a bit and simply said:

“Have you ever heard of the Terastallization in Paldea?”

Now, I had finally won my first trainer battle. And maybe, just maybe, I could one day become the champion of the Sinnoh Region.

Chapter 6

It had been some time after I had learned the basics of battling. During that time, I had battled some weak trainers and now, I had entered a city called Oreburgh City. According to some trainers I had battled nearby, this was where I could get my first gym badge.

As I walked through the door to a larger building than the other ones in the city, I saw the interior was decorated with various stones and boulders. This made sense, considering the gym was a rock type one according to what I had been told.

Inside, there were two hallways separated by a wall in the middle. According to a sign, the one on the right had two trainers I’d have to face before the gym leader, but the one on the left was longer and led to the gym leader without having to face other trainers in between.

I decided to walk the hallway on the left, because battling other trainers in between could exhaust my pokemon before I even had the chance of battling the gym leader. As I walked along the hallway, I contemplated my strategy for the battle. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a strategy. I could only hope I wouldn’t regret this later.

Eventually, I reached the end of the hallway. At the end, there was a trainer who I could only assume was the gym leader. The trainer had light crimson hair and similarly colored eyes, and he was wearing a grey outfit with a color that reminded me of stone. He looked at me and said:

“Greetings, challenger. I am Roark, the gym leader of Oreburgh City. How many badges do you have?”

“I don’t have any yet. This is my first gym battle.”

“Understood. I’ll go with a team that isn’t too difficult for beginners. Go, Geodude!”

Roark sent out a pokemon that resembled a rock with arms. According to the pokedex I had received from Rowan, it was a rock and ground type pokemon. Because I had learned the rock type was weak to the grass type, I decided to send out Budew.

“Go, Budew! Use Mega Drain!”

My Budew used a grass type move to absorb some of Geodude’s energy, almost knocking it out with a single attack due to the type advantage. However, it wasn’t knocked out just yet, which I found slightly odd considering the power and type advantage of the attack. Roark seemed to be impressed, replying with:

“That was a powerful attack. However, Geodude’s Sturdy ability allows it to not get knocked out by a single attack. Geodude, use Rock Throw!”

The Geodude detached a stone from its own arm, throwing the stone at my Budew using its other hand. My Budew took some damage from the attack, but I was not about to give up yet.

“Budew, use Absorb!”

My Budew attacked with a similar move to Mega Drain, draining some of Geodude’s energy in order to both knock it out and to heal Budew a little bit.

“Go, Cranidos!”

Roark sent out a dinosaur-like pokemon with a large head that looked capable of powerful headbutt attacks. I used my pokedex to find out it was a pokemon called Cranidos that could be obtained by reviving it from a fossil.

“Budew, use Vine Whip!”

My Budew unleashed an attack by sprouting vines from the ground to both deal some damage to the Cranidos and try to hold it in place.

“Cranidos, use Headbutt!”

Breaking through the vines, the Cranidos dashed forward and bashed its head against my Budew, knocking it out. It was all up to my Chimchar now, and it was at a type disadvantage.

“Go, Chimchar! Use Flame Wheel”

My Chimchar dashed forward at the Cranidos, dealing some damage but not enough due to the type disadvantage. Suddenly, Chimchar began to glow and once the glow faded, I could see it had evolved into a pokemon called Monferno. As it was already close to the Cranidos, I now knew what to do.

“Monferno, use Close Combat!”

Due to already being close, my newly evolved Monferno could deal powerful short-range punches that were enough to finally knock out the Cranidos. After my victory, Roark walked up to me and said:

“Congratulations. You have won the Coal Badge.”

I was quite proud of myself. I had not only won my first gym battle, but I had also managed to evolve one of my pokemon. I was now one step closer to becoming the champion.

Chapter 7

After defeating Roark and gaining my first gym badge, I had returned to Jubilife city. According to some nearby trainers, the road to Floaroma town, my next destination, was just north of Jubilife city.

As I walked along the streets, I noticed Dawn and Rowan nearby. They were talking to two strange men with strange futuristic uniforms that had the letter G on them. I walked closer to try to listen to their conversation.

“Now, hand those research papers to Team Galactic!”

“And what makes you think I’d do that?”

“Because if you don’t, it won’t end well for your assistant!”

Despite me disliking Dawn’s overconfidence and annoying behavior, I couldn’t just stand by and watch her be hurt. I didn’t know if this would be a good idea, but I felt I had to help her and Rowan.

“I challenge you two to a battle!”

Dawn looked at me in surprise, replying with:

“Are you stupid? You can’t defeat two opponents alone!”

“Well, do you want to help me with this battle or get hurt by those guys?”

“Fine. I’ll help you for now. Go, Starly!”

“Go, Budew!”

The Team Galactic people also sent out their pokemon in retaliation to our challenge. One of them sent out a gray cat-like pokemon with a long curled tail and the other one sent out a purple skunk-like pokemon with a gross scent. According to my pokedex, the pokemon were called Glameow and Stunky.

“Glameow, use Fake Out on the Budew!”

“Stunky, use Smokescreen on the Starly!”

The Glameow used a swift attack that flinched my Budew, making it unable to attack for a bit. Meanwhile, the Stunky created a cloud of smoke to obscure the vision of Dawn’s Starly.

“Starly, use Quick Attack on the Stunky!”

Dawn’s Starly dashed at the Stunky with swift and precise movements, giving it an opening to strike again.

“Starly, use Wing Attack on the Stunky!”

Next, the Starly flew towards the Stunky and attacked it with its wings. However, due to the obscuring cloud of smoke, the attack barely missed. Then, my Budew was able to continue the battle.

“Budew, use Vine Whip on the Glameow!”

My Budew attacked with vines in order to both deal damage and bind the Glameow in place in order to get another opening to attack.

“Budew, use Mega Drain on the Glameow!”

My Budew used an attack to drain the Glameow’s energy in order to both damage it and heal itself.

“Glameow, use Fury Swipes on the Starly!”

“Stunky, use Venoshock on the Budew!”

The Glameow attacked Dawn’s Starly with a series of quick and powerful claw attacks, knocking it out. Meanwhile, the Stunky attacked my Budew with a powerful poisonous attack, also knocking it out.

“Go, Turtwig! Use Razor Leaf on the Glameow!”

“Go, Chimchar! Use Flame Wheel on the Stunky!”

Dawn sent out her Turtwig, attacking the Glameow with various sharp leaves in order to finally knock it out. Meanwhile, my Chimchar attacked the Stunky with a wheel-shaped fire attack, also knocking it out. We had won the battle together. The Galactic grunts ran off, saying:

“We’ll tell our commander about this!”

After the battle, Rowan said:

“Thank you for helping us. Those Team Galactic grunts were trying to steal our research on evolution in order to get that power for themselves.”

Dawn replied:

“Indeed. According to Rowan’s research, a large number of pokemon are able to evolve through various means.”

My reaction was simply:

“Are you not even going to thank me?”

“I could have beaten those Galactic Grunts by myself even if you hadn’t shown up because I am better than you.”

Rowan said:

“Calm down, Dawn. There’s no need to be so rude.”

“Whatever.”

After the conversation was over, I decided to continue to the north towards Floaroma town and Eterna city.
