Music In FanFic?

Hi I'm new to the board and already posted in the intro topic, but I had a question I don't think I was specifically finding on the forum rules or the fanfic posting rules.

I have a fanfic I am wanting to share that I wrote, but I assembled a hodgepodge of various OST's from other games and various sources that could really enhance the experience of reading it. Obviously I did not create any of those tracks. My question is if it is ok to post numbers like (1) or (2) at various places in my fanfic and then to have a separate thread in Fic Discussion for links to youtube video's that correspond to each number. Like when you see (1) in the story, you find (1) in the music thread and click the link to listen to it as you read that section until you come to the next number. If its just numbers in the story itself, it won't have all these annoying links posted everywhere in it and makes reading it with the music an optional experience. I'm thinking realistically the way it would work is to have the music list open on one side of the screen, and the fic in the other screen and clicking links for new music as it goes. I'm not seeing anyone else doing that on here and I doubt I am the only one to think of something as basic as that, so I'm guessing it won't fly, but I want to ask anyway since it would make the story so much better if I could.

I also found a few art pictures online that I would love to use, but I'm not sure if I can track down who created them. Is it acceptable to post a link to where I found each of them?

Posting music to go with your story is totally fine! To me it would make the most sense to have the numbers within your stories be links themselves, rather than have them point to a separate thread with links--most convenient for readers to just click as they're reading along if they'd like. But I might not be totally understanding the setup you want. We've certainly had people present OSTs to go with their stories before; you can see how some other people have approached the problem in stories like this (words/phrases are links to music) or this (links at the end of chapters).

For fanart you'd like to use for your stories, you'd want to get permission from the artist to display it with your fic. Some artists are very strict about people reposting their art or how it's credited, so I think it's generally good practice to clear things with the artist before posting it. The exception would be official art, for example the illustration from a TCG card. Official artwork is fine to post in your thread without crediting the creator or asking for permission. If you found fanart on an aggregator website of some kind or otherwise don't know or can't contact the artist, then you may be able to use a reverse image search service like TinEye to find out where it came from and get in touch with the artist.

Wow not only was that what I was hoping to hear essentially, but it was very helpful!

Having something to click in the story would be great! After a quick google search and a test I figured out how it works! That's way better than a separate post for the reader to follow! Wow thanks!

The art sounds like it would be a bit more difficult but I understand and respect the commitment to obtaining permission from artists. For any original works I'll rely on hearing back from the artist before looking to post it. Thanks for the insight!

Hey, I have one more question. This one just pertains to art though. I could make another topic for it, but I don't want to litter the board with lots of small topics.

I was able to find a source of the image I was wanting to use with TinEye, but it just leads to an aggregate website with seemingly no way to identify the original artist.

This rendition of one of the characters in the game is how I would like to depict the character, but it doesn't seem like there is any way of finding out who the artist was or if there is a way to reach them. If I put a note below the picture indicating I was unable to locate the artist, would it be permissible to use the image in this case?

That image appears to be credited to this artist, although unfortunately you still might not have any luck contacting them; they may not speak English. In general unfortunately I'd say that you shouldn't include fanart if you aren't able to find the artist to get their permission to use it.

That's cool how you found the artist, but yeah... its probably pretty hard to get permission in this case. I suppose a link to a website with the art would not be any better either... I totally understand where you are coming from though.

Maybe I'll explore trying to commission an artist to make something at some point instead. I have no experience with that though so I would have to figure out how that works.
