In the flurry, Maple was quick to take action, and the badges finally got to work. More importantly, Maple was able to get her portals working, and Giratina, as some kind of summoned backup and secret plan from Maple, also assisted where she could. But in that frantic storm, Maple could not be certain...

So she made sure she was the last to go. Away went Giratina, who had been spooked by Lugia's unmitigated storms and Shadows unleashed. Away went the team Diyem had sent them. And finally, away was the air, as Maple was too late to escape in time.

The water came crashing around the three who stayed behind--a Smeargle, a Lugia, and a much smaller Lugia, who, still with a mortal mind, cowered behind his wings and cried something primal.

That was all it took for Lugia to come to her senses as the last of the Shadows left her body. She turned her head to Meringue and lunged toward him, wrapping her massive wings around his body and pulling him close. Meringue's feathers puffed out at this, something like a blush, but then Lugia held him more firmly. "You are Lugia," the scaly one said, sternness in her eyes. "Do not cower at the sea."

Maple watched the two of them as the water came at them, looking slow from so far away, yet truly it was an incredible pace. Still, the Smeargle smiled. "Already back to teaching Meringue, are you?" Maple asked.

Lugia looked at Maple, perplexed. "You should go. The water would kill you."

Maple smiled, looking amused. "No," she said. "I'll wait until your lesson is complete."

Before Lugia could question her sanity, the water came, crashing and obscuring everything in bubbles. Lugia helped Meringue handle the worst of it, but then uncurled her wings so he could swim in the violent seas.

Something awakened inside him, something quiet, like a little voice, cheerful and mysterious. Meringue's feathers fell away slightly, but not completely, as the silvery things glinted around him. Lugia's eyes glowed in the dark, providing most of the light in the rapidly dimming trench, but Meringue's did not. It was not yet his time. But he still drifted, floated, swam a few times, and Lugia smiled.

And then both of them realized they had company and looked down, fearful.

There she was--the Smeargle, still standing on the rocks like she was still in air. She casually gestured for them to continue, and waited patiently.

And as the Silver Trench finally flooded with the water it so rightfully deserved, the two Lugia humored her.
