"Yeah, let's. Thanks for pulling me back there, you two." She sighed and turned away from Zane, who she almost felt sorry for. Almost. But Astrid certainly put him in his place. And good for Cynthian for speaking his mind this time.

"It's no problem," Cynthian said as he unwound his vibes around her paw. Curio helped bring him back to his senses during his slugging incident. Stopping her from beating Zane senseless paled in comparison.

From half the team agreeing to join in on the search, everything started going to hell within about five minutes. The vulpix ran off. The zangoose caused a fucking scene and ran off. The jigglypuff ran off after him. And meanwhile whatever the fucking black thing was had apparently gone full mysterious mentor. "Jesus fucking Christ," Nate snarled, turning towards the charmander, who was apparently the only one around here with the attention span of more than a gnat. "Okay. Where can Diyem not see? 'Distortions,' whatever the fuck those are. I think he said he can't see into that Destiny Village place, either. As far as other worlds go, supposedly that fucking Celebi showed up from one. So I guess we could always ask her about it, if we think they got chucked onto a different plane of existence or whatever the fuck. Diyem. Are there any spots near here you can't see into? Or any near the trench place we just came from?"

Owen didn't have the physical power to restrain anybody. He didn't have that strength yet; his defensive capabilities had returned to him before anything else. Owen wondered if he should have been concerned about that--the fact that he was supposedly subconsciously prioritizing not-dying rather than actually conquering foes.

Then again, given his memories... That made sense.

Nope--not the time. Bahamut may have gone into a catatonic state due to some reminder of his past, but he wouldn't let that happen again. He'd already embarrassed himself in front of Cabot and Mellow. "Along with what Nate said," Owen added, "Diyem, can you see through distortions at all?"

...I can, yes. The distortions that muddle my vision comes from things that are infected and then seem to have that energy-nullifying property that prevents Maple from striking next. Unfortunately, those places are difficult to pinpoint, because they also only arise when something with that property is distressed. Even if I were to scan over a place with an infected Pokemon, I may not be distorted until they engage in battle.

"Then it's not foolproof that where you check is free of an infected," Owen said, frowning.

As everything dissolved into ridiculous squabbling (not that he could entirely blame Curio here), the Mudkip was somehow the only person with sense, trying to make actual progress. He moved toward him and Owen, listened to Diyem's answer. "Wait, so can you or can't you confirm they're not where there aren't any distortions?" Though he supposed from what he'd seen the two of them had seemed at each other's throats before and during the fight; if they were together probably they were kicking the shit out of each other, so by that point probably there would be a distortion. "Is there any chance they could've been deposited separately, two different places? Either way, could give talking to Celebi a try. Maple kinda sounded like this could've been Giratina."

Owen was worrying Diyem couldn't check for infections. "Well, you know, good thing you've got me. I can smell the infected, remember?"

"It's not supposed to make sense to you, little one," Bahamut said, before pivoted toward some of the others mumbling about distortions. "How do you know those kittens are even still on this planet?" He crossed his arms. "You all saw the person Maple summoned. Giratina." Bahamut shrugged. What a ridiculous name. "In my world... a similar person was the only one besides myself who could create portals to traverse the stars.

"But the pokémon of this world are much stronger than my own. So, who's to say that, in the heat of the moment, Giratina didn't accidentally drag the kittens through some interstellar portal? Alive, perhaps... but in such a way that our boss is of no help to us in locating them."

"Oh. Yeah. I was kinda wondering why you couldn't just figure out who all was infected in town by seeing where the distortions were," Nate said, then shook his head. "Ain't the point. You'd be able to see the two of them if there weren't no distortion, right? So are there any near here they might be in the middle of?"

The poochyena was right--no way to know if they were together or not. That was a fun thought, the two of them off by themselves in the middle of who fucking knew where, maybe even in the middle of the ocean. Although if the rumors about what had gone on between them were true, maybe they'd like it better that way. To the black prism guy he said, "Yeah, I mean, maybe? So what're you saying? Ask Giratina if they maybe accidentally chucked a couple people onto the moon or some shit?"

"Maple said she was going to do that," Owen said. "Diyem? Can't you peer into the Reverse World or something?"

No, not without Giratina's permission. I can access the surface level of Cibus, but the Reverse World is... it's below. It's deeper. It's not somewhere I can access without asking. Frankly I don't know how I was able to access this world so easily on the surface. And I'd rather not ask Giratina, as she would certainly... inquire about me. And...

"Oh. Right." Owen glanced at the others, who had all largely gone their separate ways. "It's about time we had a talk about that, huh?"

I believe so.

"What? No, I'm not going to the fucking dojo," Nate said as more of the group started to drift away. Was everyone going insane? Was he going insane? Did no one else care about this, seriously? "Did you forget that a couple of us are missing and in who knows what kind of fucking trouble? Maybe your fucking announcement can wait unless it's 'here's what we're going to do to get them back?'"

"I mean, what do you expect us to do? Diyem doesn't know where they are and we don't have anything to go off of," Vix said. "I wanna make sure they're safe too, but we can't really... do anything about them right now."

Owen frowned, shaking his head. "Look at it this way," he said. "Diyem, did you check the places they normally are?"

They are not in Treasure Town. They are not in the Silver Trench. They are not here. They are nowhere on Cibus that is not distorted, and there are not many distortions on Cibus that I cannot see at the moment. I doubt Darkwhite took them.

"No, she ran away before the trench collapsed," Owen confirmed.

Then searching aimlessly will only put you at needless risk. We shall wait for Maple to say something. Until then, it will only be an hour. You can then do your group searches after that, when I have more time to search for suspect distortions.

Dave hesitated. Hardly the best timing from Diyem, was it? That said, he had a pretty good idea what he was about to talk to them about, and while it'd be real nice if they could actually do something to find Starr and Brisa rather than twiddling their thumbs waiting for Maple to do it...

"You know what," he said, looking at the Mudkip, "normally I'd agree but I think you may want to hear this."

Nate remained where he was a minute longer, rigid with indignation while he watched the rest of the group filter away towards the portal and the continent beyond. Fucking sit and wait for an hour, when they could even be trying to come up with a plan? This from the guy who'd told them not to trust the fucking God Squad in the first place?

And what was he going to do about it, exactly? Run off and look for them by himself? Yeah, and maybe get about three feet outside of town by the time this meeting was supposed to be over. Get the locals involved somehow? Yeah, and he'd had so much luck convincing the people who actually knew and were supposed to care about the litten and the shinx. It was like no one even cared to try to find them.

And was he? Was he going to charge off into the unknown and find them, all big hero like? Was he even going to try?

...no, of course not. Who the fuck was he kidding? Nate slumped where he stood, the tension draining out of him along with his resolve. Yeah, let's be real about this. He could yap all he wanted, but push came to shove it wasn't like he was ever going to do a damn thing anyway.

The poochyena had said he'd want to hear this, right? "This had damn well better be good," Nate muttered, and followed after the rest.

Astrid wandered the streets aimlessly… well, that wasn’t entirely true. There was a rhythm to her footsteps, how she would walk from one end of town to the other. A straight shot, back and forth—not unlike Treasure Town’s main street, and very much unlike Lively Town’s complicated, dungeon-like expanse of alleyways. She walked like she had purpose so as to not confuse the townsfolk, but she had none. A pattern, but no justification for it.

Like Treasure Town, she had been to Pokémon Square one time in her world. It was no Capim Town, but, well, at least the seafood had been good. Now she occupied herself trying to pick apart the which details were different in Cibus’s; had Grubbin’s shop always been such a staggering shade of green? She wasn’t sure. As the days rolled by, it blurred more and more.

At some point her feet had carried her off course, down south where there were more trees than buildings. Finally, she reached the end of the path, where a waterfall crashed off of a cliffside that overlooked forests and farmland off in the distance. Besides the seemingly-dormant dojo to her right, there was nothing but the crisp air to keep her company in this spot.

A wistful sigh escaped her lips as she took a seat, inches from the edge. What a fantastic expanse this is. She could barely pick out the Pokémon working in the pastures, tiny specks against a broader horizon…

"Heeey, Astrid!" Cynthian waved his black rose as he trotted towards her from down the pathway.

He arrived in front of her a minute after and leaned forward to catch his breath. Cynthian straightened his pose and held his back closer as he smiled.

"I looked around for you in Treasure Town, but couldn't find you wherever I looked. I didn't know you were still here hanging around here in the Air Continent. Good thing that portal was still there," Cynthian said, motioning with his white rose while speaking. He held it up to his chin and tilted his head slightly.

"Did you stay back to enjoy the scenery? I wouldn't be surprised. This town has quite a history in both of our worlds. It's only the town where heroes hailed from our worlds," Cynthian said with a chuckle.

Oh? Cynthian was looking for her?

“I’m just reminiscing on some of my travels. Care to join?” she impulsively said, patting the space next to her. Her eyes found their way back to the horizon’s modest curvature. “It’s a wonderful day.”

"You've been here before? Well there here of your world, I mean," Cynthian asked with an intrigued look. He took Astrid up on her offer and sat beside her just distant enough that the chilly air around her wouldn't bother him.

"This town is also popularly known as the Rescue Team's base of operations in my world. Though I'd been on a few expeditions on the Air Continent, they never brought me to this very town." Cynthian tucked his legs in and slunk his bag off beside him. "Were you part of a Rescue Team by any chance?"

‘Were’?

Astrid swallowed. “I—yes, I am part of an exploration team. Currently.” She wasn’t sure of the dichotomy between the two terms in the Roselia’s world, so she did her best to offer a description. “We saved people and made maps. It’s been my dream since I was little and… yep! Here I am.”

View temporarily forgotten, she instead picked at the grass with an absent mind. She could keep talking about that, but Arceus, now was not the time to get homesick. Again.

“This is the headquarters for Air Continent rescue operations in my world as well,” she continued, offering a tangential change of subject through her rambling. “and they’ve been falling behind in recent years. The region is relatively peaceful but, mmm. They sure do need help from abroad more often than any other continent. Hopefully the Pokémon in charge of that here in Cibus are better prepared for a freak disaster like the Shades.”
